Phillips, Amanda. Gamer Trouble. NYU Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.18574/nyu/9781479870103.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Gamers have been in trouble as long as games have existed, constantly mired in controversies about violence, diversity, and online harassment. As our popular understanding of “gamer” shifts beyond its historical construction as a white, straight, adolescent, cisgender male, the troubles that emerge both confirm and challenge our understanding of identity politics. This book excavates the turbulent relationships between surface and depth in contemporary gaming culture, taking readers under the hood of the mechanisms of video games in order to understand the ways that gender, race, and sexuality operate in their technological, ludic, ideological, and social systems. By centering the insights of queer and women of color feminisms in readings of online harassment campaigns, industry animation practices, and popular video games like Portal, Bayonetta, Tomb Raider, and Mass Effect, Phillips adds necessary analytical tools to our conversations about video games. In the context of a political landscape in which reinvigorated forms of racism, sexism, and homophobia thrive in games and gaming communities, Phillips follows the lead of those who have been making good trouble all along, agitating for a better world.

Straus, Joseph N. The Art of Post-Tonal Analysis. Oxford University Press, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780197543979.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This book consists of analyses of thirty-three musical passages or entire short works in a variety of post-tonal styles. The works under study are taken from throughout the long twentieth century, from 1909 to the present. Within the atonal wing of modern classical music, the composers discussed here, some canonical and some not, represent a diversity of musical style, chronology, geography, gender, and race/ethnicity: Arnold Schoenberg, Anton Webern, Alban Berg, Béla Bartók, Igor Stravinsky, Aaron Copland, Ruth Crawford Seeger, Milton Babbitt, Luigi Dallapiccola, Elliott Carter, Louise Talma, Hale Smith, Elisabeth Lutyens, Ursula Mamlok, Tania León, Tan Dun, Shulamit Ran, Kaija Saariaho, Joan Tower, John Adams, Sofia Gubaidulina, Thomas Adès, Caroline Shaw, Chen Yi, and Suzanne Farrin. The approach is pedagogical, in the somewhat informal style of a classroom. Musical examples and analytical videos carry the burden of the analytical argument, with relatively little prose. For each piece, the book suggests ways of making sense of the music, using basic concepts of post-tonal theory to tease out rich networks of musical relationships and reveal something of the fascination and beauty of this challenging music.

Abstract:
This chapter examines how commercial entertainments relating to the NFL advance a vision of idealized citizenship in the twenty-first century U.S. which is budget-conscious and market-oriented. The chapter extends the concerns with productivity, which were developed in the previous two chapters, focusing this interest on the construction of a financialized citizen, who is analytical and concerned with organizational strategies. Through football-related entertainments, these idealized figures are imagined as valorized men. The chapter focuses on promotions for the popular digital entertainments of fantasy football and the video game series Madden NFL. Both games position NFL fans to act as effective managers of teams and players. In doing so, they impart more generally applicable lessons about fiscal management and social relations in the late capitalist period, while offering forms of masculine validation for those who succeed.

Browning, Mark. David Fincher. ABC-CLIO, LLC, 2010. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798400637919.

Full text
Abstract:
Film scholar Mark Browning offers the first detailed analysis of the work of David Fincher, director of the critically acclaimed films Seven, Fight Club, and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. David Fincher is one of the most exciting filmmakers working in Hollywood today. He has produced a string of groundbreaking films that have achieved both critical and commercial success, while constantly challenging audiences to rethink their expectations of generic boundaries. David Fincher: Films That Scar is the first truly analytical work on the films of this mysterious and complex filmmaker. This insightful book analyzes all of Fincher's feature films, as well as examples of his commercials and pop videos, tracing key influences that include his background in special effects. It considers how he creates roles for strong women, how he has extended the detective genre, and how he adapts cult texts. The book also questions whether Fincher's films, famous for their downbeat endings and "dark" visual style, are really bleak or just part of an unconventional approach to filmmaking. In the end, readers will understand the development of Fincher's individual films and appreciate how the films relate closely to each other.

Gustafsson, Tommy, and Pietari Kääpä, eds. Nordic Genre Film. Edinburgh University Press, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.3366/edinburgh/9780748693184.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Nordic Genre Film offers a transnational approach to studying contemporary genre production in Nordic cinema. It discusses a range of internationally renowned examples, from Nordic noir such as the television show The Bridge and films like Insomnia (1997) to high concept ‘video generation’ productions such as Iron Sky (2012). Yet, genre, at least in this context, indicates both a complex strategy for domestic and international competition as well as an analytical means to identify the Nordic film cultures’ relationships to international trends. Conceptualizing Nordic genre film as an industrial and cultural phenomenon, other contributions focus on road movies, the horror film, autobiographical films, the quirky comedy, musicals, historical epics and pornography. These are contextualized by discussion of their place in their respective national film and media histories as well as their influence on other Nordic countries and beyond. By highlighting similarities and differences between the countries, as well as the often diverse production modes of each country, as well as the connections that have historically existed, the book works at the intersections of film and cultural studies and combines industrial perspectives and in depth discussion of specific films, while also offering historical perspectives on each genre as it comes to production, distribution and reception of popular contemporary genre film.

Sickels, Robert C. American Film in the Digital Age. ABC-CLIO, LLC, 2010. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798400610660.

Full text
Abstract:
This eclectic, yet comprehensive analytical overview of the cataclysmic changes in the American film industry since 1990 shows how they have collectively resulted in a new era—The Digital Age. The American film industry has entered a new era. American Film in the Digital Age traces the industrial changes since 1990 that have brought us to this point, namely: the rise of media conglomerates, the proliferation of pornography through peripheral avenues of mainstream media, the role of star actors and directors in distributing and publicizing their own pet projects, the development of digital technology, and the death of truly independent films. Author Robert Sickels draws straight lines from the movies to music, DVDs, video games, fast food, digital-on-demand, and more, to demonstrate how all forms of media are merging into one. He explores the irony that the success of independent films essentially killed independent cinema, showing how it has become almost impossible to get a film released without the imprimatur of one of the big six media companies―Fox, Viacom, TimeWarner, Disney, General Electric, or CBS. In the end, using recent, popular films as examples, he explains not only how we got where we are, but where we’re likely headed as well.

Pizzato, Mark, Margaret H. Freeman, Eva Lilja, Mark Pizzato, Victor Bermúdez, and Yasemin Hacioglu. European Churches and Chinese Temples as Neuro-Theatrical Sites. Bloomsbury Publishing Inc, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798765109144.

Full text
Abstract:
Compares monumental designs and performance spaces of Christian, Buddhist, and related sanctuaries, exploring how brain networks, animal-human emotions, and cultural ideals are reflected historically and affected today as “inner theatre” elements. Integrating research across the humanities and sciences, this book explores how traditional designs of outer theatrical spaces left cultural imprints for the inner staging of Self and Other consciousness, which each of us performs daily based on how we think others view us. But believers also perform in a cosmic theatre. Ancestral spirits and gods (or God) watch and interact with them in awe-inspiring spaces, grooming affects toward in-group identification and sacrifice, or out-group rivalry and scapegoating. In a study of over 80 buildings – shown by 40 images in the book, plus thousands of photos and videos online – Pizzato demonstrates how they reflect meta-theatrical projections from prior generations. They also affect the embodied, embedded, enacted, and extended (4E) cognition of current visitors, who bring performance frameworks of belief, hope, and doubt to the sacred site. This involves neuro-social, inner/outer theatre networks with patriarchal, maternal, and trickster paradigms. European Churches and Chinese Temples as Neuro-Theatrical Sites investigates performative material cultures, creating dialogs between theatre, philosophy, history, and various (cognitive, affective, social, biological) sciences. It applies them to the architecture of religious buildings: from Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant in Europe, plus key sites in Jerusalem and prior “pagan” temples, to Buddhist, Daoist, Confucian, and imperial in China. It thus reveals individualist/collectivist, focal/holistic, analytical/dialectical, and melodramatic/tragicomic trajectories, with cathartic poetics for the future. Brain Spirits: European Churches and Chinese Temples as Theatrical Sites compares the monumental spaces of Christian, Buddhist, and Daoist sanctuaries, exploring how brain networks, animal-human drives, mimetic emotions, and cultural (patriarchal, maternal, or trickster) ideals are reflected historically and affected in visitors today as “inner theatre” elements. This book will increase the reader’s awareness of how each person’s choices within a religious building (or in other performance situations)—observing, engaging with, or questioning artworks, services, and ideologies—may alter or perpetuate melodramatic temptations of religious and political traditions: inter-group conflict, scapegoating, and self-sacrifice. Lessons from this cross-cultural, cognitive neuro-performance auto-ethnography apply to the communally binding, yet dangerous brain spirits evoked by today’s secular, mass, and social media as well.

Rose, Nathan. Motorcycle Accident Reconstruction. 2nd ed. SAE International, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.4271/9781468603989.

Full text
Abstract:
Accident reconstruction utilizes principles of physics and empirical data to analyze the physical, electronic, video, audio, and testimonial evidence from a crash, to determine how and why the crash occurred, how the crash could have been avoided, or to determine whose description of the crash is most accurate. This process draws together aspects of mathematics, physics, engineering, materials science, human factors, and psychology, and combines analytical models with empirical test data. Different types of crashes produce different types of evidence and call for different analysis methods. Still, the basic philosophical approach of the reconstructionist is the same from crash type to crash type, as are the physical principles that are brought to bear on the analysis. This book covers a basic approach to accident reconstruction, including the underlying physical principles that are used, then details how this approach and the principles are applied when reconstructing motorcycle crashes. This second edition of Motorcycle Accident Reconstruction presents a thorough, systematic, and scientific overview of the available methods for reconstructing motorcycle crashes. This new edition contains: Additional theoretical models, examples, case studies, and test data. An updated bibliography incorporating the newest studies in the field. Expanded coverage of the braking capabilities of motorcyclists. Updated, refined, and expanded discussion of the decelerations of motorcycles sliding on the ground. A thoroughly rewritten and expanded discussion of motorcycle impacts with passenger vehicles. Updated coefficients of restitution for collisions between motorcycles and cars. A new and expanded discussion of using passenger car EDR data in motorcycle accident reconstruction. A new section covering recently published research on post-collision frozen speedometer readings on motorcycles. A new section on motorcycle interactions with potholes, roadway deterioration, and debris and expanded coverage of motorcycle falls. This second edition of Motorcycle Accident Reconstruction is a must-have title for accident reconstructionists, forensic engineers, and all interested in understanding why and how motorcycle crashes occur.
