Abstract:
The RUBI Autism Network has developed and tested a structured parent training manual for children with autism spectrum disorder and disruptive behaviors. The manual is based on principles of applied behavior analysis and is designed for therapists to use with parents of children with autism spectrum disorder and co-occurring challenging behaviors, such as tantrums, noncompliance, difficulties with transitions, and aggression. A trained therapist utilizes the manual to guide the parent in applying techniques and tools to help manage the child’s challenging behaviors. The treatment includes 11 Core sessions, 7 Supplemental sessions, a home visit, and follow-up telephone booster sessions. Each of the sessions contains a therapist script, activity sheets, a parent handout, and treatment fidelity checklists. Additionally, accompanying each core session are video vignettes that the therapist uses to demonstrate concepts taught in the session. The videos include 30- to 60-second vignettes demonstrating common parenting mistakes as well as implementation (to varying degrees of success) of the strategies being taught. The treatment manual is designed to be delivered individually to parents in weekly outpatient visits. Parents are given homework assignments between sessions that focus on applying techniques to specific behaviors.

Abstract:
Musicians have for centuries reinterpreted and recontextualized the music of other songwriters, composers and performers, and this chapter explores how this musical reinvention has manifested itself as part of the contemporary chipscene. The chapter explores how in the early days of 8-bit gaming, game soundtracks often borrowed heavily from the popular electronic music of the time, often featuring arrangements of Jarre, Vangelis, and Yellow Magic Orchestra. The chapter also explores how, today, there are bands who take those classic video game themes and perform them as live five- or six-piece rock bands. It discusses how social media has provided a platform for the performance and distribution of video game covers and examines how, as musicians have demanded simple, self-contained production environments to develop chip music, new hardware and software synthesizers have been developed to meet that need, an approach that is known as fakebit and that highlights the value that different participants in the scene place on authenticity.

Abstract:
This brief conclusion brings together threads from several previous chapters. It begins with a consideration of the independent game The End Is Nigh, a recent postapocalyptic game that contains a soundtrack by the duo Ridiculon consisting of remixed classical works. It then reflects on ways in which the cultural barriers between classical music and video games have weakened in popular culture, emphasizing that games are increasingly recognized for their capability to tell meaningful stories, produce insightful political and cultural commentary, and make artistic statements. It closes by calling attention to the arguably elitist cultural spheres in which biases that favor classical music persist.

Abstract:
Deaf people are often portrayed as living in a world of silence, cut off both from experiencing musical works and from musical expression. There are, however, many different forms of musical expression in Deaf culture, including “song signing.” This essay explores the idea that deafness, rather than being a disadvantage for musical expression, actually enables distinctive musical performances within the context of song signing. The first section surveys the different varieties of signed song performance, the second contains analyses of videos, and the third compares the Deaf and hearing song-signing communities. Analysis of multiple song-signing videos reveals that deaf and hearing song signers exploit different techniques in expressing themselves musically. The analyses explore the signers’ principal differences in terms of communication, use of space, and rhythmic techniques. The videos analyzed throughout the article reveal how both deafness and hearing can be musical resources in the context of song-signing performance.

Abstract:
Positive psychotherapy (PPT) is a therapeutic endeavor within positive psychology that aims to alleviate symptomatic stress by way of enhancing well-being. Traditional psychotherapy does a good job of making clients feel, for example, less depressed or less anxious, but the well-being of clients is not an explicit goal. Positive psychology studies the conditions and processes that enable individuals, communities, and institutions to flourish. PPT integrates symptoms with strengths, risks with resources, weaknesses with values, and regrets with hopes, in order to understand the inherent complexities of human experience in a balanced way. This workbook contains 15 chapters (plus an introduction and conclusion) to correspond with the skills and practices clients learn in session. Each session focuses on one or more practice; every chapter also includes three things to know about the main topic, worksheets, reflection and discussion points, and “in real life” client stories. Each chapter also includes a list of relevant books, videos, and websites related to the issues discussed in the chapter.

Full text
Abstract:
Experienced neurologists work fast. They ask few questions, maybe perform a brief examination, and come up with the right answer. Sometimes they do neither and their conclusions are accurate—but how do they do it? Traditionally, the diagnostic process includes pattern recognition and probabilistic, causal, or deterministic methods. The aeronautical expert uses so-called demons—which are essentially memorized diagnostic shortcuts that help to solve problems rapidly. In this text they are called Handles. Another complementary diagnostic process is the use of caveats, or Red Flags, which are negative Handles in the sense that if one encounters a Red Flag, then the diagnosis should be reconsidered. This book provides diagnostic shortcuts, collected by the authors through their own observations, with many others identified at grand rounds and conferences. Thus a diagnosis may be reached rapidly by applying a mixture of Handles and Flags. The Handles and Flags are grouped into regions based on standard neurological history and examination, and others in relation to specific diseases. The book contains thirteen chapters, which for the most part focus on a particular neurological condition, namely demyelination, headache, epilepsy and sleep, myopathy and motor neuron disorders, movement disorders, stroke, peripheral neuropathy, cerebellar ataxia, and dementia. The remaining chapters are concerned with the clinician’s initial impressions (first encounters), cranial nerves, limbs and trunk, spinal lesions, and cerebrospinal fluid. At the end of each chapter is a summary of the salient points and a few key references. Most Handles, are illustrated by a table, figure, or video clip to reinforce a particular message.

Abstract:
Now fully revised and updated with the latest imaging techniques and technology and covering even more conditions than before, this new edition of The ESC Textbook of Cardiovascular Imaging provides extensive coverage of all cardiovascular imaging modalities, and is produced in collaboration with the European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging with contributions from specialists across the globe and edited by a distinguished team of experts. It not only discusses the principles of individual modalities but also clearly demonstrates the added value each technique can bring to the treatment of all cardiac diseases. Richly illustrated with colour figures, images, and tables and using a wealth of newly available evidence to link theory to practice, it demonstrates how these techniques can be used in the diagnosis of a range of cardiovascular diseases. Learning how to apply them in practice is made easy with videos and imaging loops online, and it contains information on cutting-edge technical developments in echocardiography, CT, CMR and hybrid imaging, as well as imaging's current role in cardiac interventions, such as identifying cardiac structures, helping to guide procedures and exclude possible complications. The application of imaging modalities in conditions such as valvular and coronary heart disease, heart failure, cardiomyopathies, peri-myocardial disease, adult congenital heart disease and aortic disease, is also extensively considered.

Sing, play, move, create, and experience joy with living musical traditions from Guatemala and Nicaragua. Suitable for use in families, schools, or community centers, this resource contains a playful collection of 90 songs, singing games, chants, and games the author learned from teachers, children, and families while living in several communities in both countries. While the majority of the songs are in Spanish, a few in a Mayan language, Kaqchikel, are included. Field videos, audio recordings, and select song histories are available on the companion website to witness the music in authentic contexts, guide in pronunciation, and trace musical origins. Ethnographic descriptions of locations where songs were learned and personal biographies of a few singers written in Kaqchikel or Spanish and translated to English allow the reader to develop a connection to the land and the musicians. Culturally responsive and sustaining teaching pedagogies are discussed alongside strategies to responsibly include the music in school curriculums. A brief history of Central America and an overview of music genres in the region are included to frame this song collection within historic, cultural, and musical contexts. ¡Ven a cantar y jugar! Come sing and play! The song pages are playfully and thoughtfully illustrated by Sucely Puluc from Guatemala.

Rose, Nathan. Motorcycle Accident Reconstruction. 2nd ed. SAE International, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.4271/9781468603989.

Full text
Abstract:
Accident reconstruction utilizes principles of physics and empirical data to analyze the physical, electronic, video, audio, and testimonial evidence from a crash, to determine how and why the crash occurred, how the crash could have been avoided, or to determine whose description of the crash is most accurate. This process draws together aspects of mathematics, physics, engineering, materials science, human factors, and psychology, and combines analytical models with empirical test data. Different types of crashes produce different types of evidence and call for different analysis methods. Still, the basic philosophical approach of the reconstructionist is the same from crash type to crash type, as are the physical principles that are brought to bear on the analysis. This book covers a basic approach to accident reconstruction, including the underlying physical principles that are used, then details how this approach and the principles are applied when reconstructing motorcycle crashes. This second edition of Motorcycle Accident Reconstruction presents a thorough, systematic, and scientific overview of the available methods for reconstructing motorcycle crashes. This new edition contains: Additional theoretical models, examples, case studies, and test data. An updated bibliography incorporating the newest studies in the field. Expanded coverage of the braking capabilities of motorcyclists. Updated, refined, and expanded discussion of the decelerations of motorcycles sliding on the ground. A thoroughly rewritten and expanded discussion of motorcycle impacts with passenger vehicles. Updated coefficients of restitution for collisions between motorcycles and cars. A new and expanded discussion of using passenger car EDR data in motorcycle accident reconstruction. A new section covering recently published research on post-collision frozen speedometer readings on motorcycles. A new section on motorcycle interactions with potholes, roadway deterioration, and debris and expanded coverage of motorcycle falls. This second edition of Motorcycle Accident Reconstruction is a must-have title for accident reconstructionists, forensic engineers, and all interested in understanding why and how motorcycle crashes occur.

The Early Music revival has had far-reaching consequences on how music of the past is performed, both by specialists and non-specialists. This timely book is a practical step-by-step course of lessons for violinists and violists in both these categories, covering the interpretation, technique, culture, and historical background of the Baroque violin repertoire. Written by a violinist and teacher specializing in Baroque music over many years, it guides readers from the basics (how to hold the violin) to Bach, via music from a wide variety of styles. Avoiding obscure musicological jargon, it is eminently readable and accessible. Packed with information, detailed observations on the music under discussion, and relevant quotations from historical and contemporary sources, it covers everything the Baroque violin student should know and may be considered the equivalent of two to three years of individual lessons. The book contains over 100 exercises devised for and tested on students over the years. The author’s holistic approach is evident through the exercises aimed at bringing out the individual voice of each student, and his insistence that what happens within, the identification and manipulation of affects, is a vital part of successful performance. Imitating the voice, both spoken and sung, is a constant theme, beginning with the simple device of playing words. There are fifty lessons, including five Ornamentation Modules and ones on specific topics: temperament, rhetoric, the affects, and so on. All the music, transcribed for both violin and viola, is downloadable from the website, where there is also a series of videos.
