Abstract:
Victor Turner broke anthropology free from cultural determinism when it was anchored in the reductionist theories of Durkheim. Like Tolstoy in his recognition of the origin of violence in government, Turner recognized the origin of the denaturing of cultures in culture’s own penchant for the building of social structures in order to perpetuate itself. He saw in the cracks between structures, and in the liminal gaps necessary for changes in structure, the revival of the lost immediacy of social relationships and the communitas that is its mark. Nowadays one may include signs of spirituality in those gaps, although that spirituality has been a topic previously tabooed in anthropological circles or hidden under structural analysis. Turner saw the inconvenient truth that if structuralism as a value and philosophy (plus what we now see as the violence inseparable from the political state, along with neoconservatism and neoliberalism—business doctrines multiplied by themselves ad infinitem) were to continue as the world’s philosophy, we would continue with wars and the smothering of the natural flexibility of social intercourse (see Robert Putnam 2000, who shows in stark figures how sociality in general is losing ground in our era). Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
In the course of his ethnographic study of the Ndembu tribes, the renowned anthropologist Victor Turner focused on the elaborate rituals that marked various phases of social transition, such as puberty and marriage. Also drawing on the work of Arnold van Gennep on rites of passage, Turner identified the entities going through social transitions as liminals, that ‘are neither here nor there; they are betwixt and between the positions assigned and arrayed by law, custom, convention, and ceremonial’. According to Turner, the defining attribute of liminal positions is their ambiguity and indeterminacy because they ‘elude or slip through the network of classifications that normally locate states and positions in cultural space’.

Abstract:

Abstract:

AbstractThe essay addresses Victor Turner′s radical approach to the study of ritual and in particular the creative and generative potential of liminal processes. Two objectives guide the analysis. The first is to develop an approach that is not over-constrained by the dramatic or theatrical metaphor of performance that dominates much discussion of ritual. The second is to reorient an approach to the liminal as a stage in a process in itself and to explore it in terms of the concept of the virtual. In other words, the liminal as thoroughly an opening of potential and innovative emergence, a major direction of Turner′s approach.

Abstract:
This article discusses the Bakaua ritual in the Minangkabau community, which is held in several places in the Sijunjung area. The Bakaua ritual is a ritual of expressing gratitude, as well as a ritual of rejecting reinforcements. Using a qualitative approach, the aim of this research is to find the structure as well as the anti-structure of the Bakaua ritual, in order to find out its symbolic meaning. The ritual structure is understood as a dramaturgy, by viewing ritual as a form of social drama. Research data were collected from various written sources for further analysis using an interpretive approach, based on the ritual concepts of Victor Turner. The results showed that the Bakaua ritual as a ritual of rejecting reinforcements had a meaning as a symbol of mutual cooperation and harmony. A symbol, which reflects the belief of the supporting communitas in a shared identity that is still preserved, as a community, existentially, normatively, and ideologically.
