Abstract:
Modern interest in performance can be traced to several different developments from the 1950s to 1970s in the art world, in academic theatre, and in the social sciences, particularly sociology, anthropology, and linguistics. ‘Theatre and performance’ outlines the influence of this major shift in methodological orientation, which has become known as the ‘performative turn’, on Richard Schechner, in particular, who was editor of The Drama Review. His work with Victor Turner led to the first course on ‘performance theory’ at New York University. Courses on performance studies are now taught around the world. How has theatre changed as a result of the challenge of and gradual accommodation to performance and performance studies?

Abstract:
What does ritual do? Sociological and anthropological theory of the first half of the twentieth century proposes that ritual—secular or sacred—binds groups together, ensuring their harmonious functioning by generating and maintaining orders of meaning, purpose, and value. ‘Ritual and society’ discusses the theories of Emile Durkheim, Roy Rappaport, and Clifford Geetz and their ideas on ritual producing solidarity and effervescence and ritual's role in politics, power, and negotiation. In the 1970s, a sea change in ritual studies followed the work of Victor Turner and others who highlighted ritual's critical and creative potential. Public ritual is complex: rites can conserve, transmit, and protect tradition, but others are creatively, critically, strategically employed to enact change.

Forlenza, Rosario. Introduction. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198817444.003.0001.

Abstract:
The Introduction presents an outline of the book, its sources and empirical material, and its theoretical and methodological approach, which rests on the key concept of meaning formation in liminality. Following the social and cultural anthropology of Arnold van Gennep and Victor Turner, liminality refers to a period of transition during which the normal limits to thought, self-understanding, and behavior are relaxed, opening the way to novelty and imagination and generating new meanings, ideas, and consciousness. Lived experiences in liminal times generate horizons of expectations, beliefs, and attitudes that transform social and political identities and shape the emergence of a new political order. The anthropological approach advanced here suggests that the constitution of a political subjectivity, at the collective as well at the individual level, occurs mainly through experiences and results in fundamental changes in consciousness.

Abstract:
This book examines the transformative potential of ballroom dance, and especially how it can make anyone become beautiful. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork with a local community of amateur ballroom dancers from the Regent Ballroom and Banquet Center in Savoy, Illinois, the book explores the intersection of notions of beauty and experience—the act of becoming beautiful through performance. It considers the ethnographic trope of becoming beautiful as an “expression” in the sense suggested by Victor Turner and Edward Bruner in their anthropological work on experience. It demonstrates how the contemporary performance of ballroom dance among amateurs generates feelings of positive personal transformation, of becoming beautiful. The book also discusses the dance hall as a social space where disparate groups come together to move in synchrony, along with the ways in which race, class, and gender converge in ballroom dancing. Finally, it provides detailed ethnographic data on the formation of affinity groups.

Abstract:
This chapter examines what it means to play culturally, with particular emphasis on how cultural play can alter the relation between or bridge the gap between socially preferred forms of culture and the wider possibilities for thinking, feeling, and acting. It first considers the ways in which other fields of relationships both express and resist culture's patterning, along with play as childhood socialization. It then discusses three models of the play-culture interrelationships: first, people and groups play within culture; second, people play with or at culture; and third, culture itself is playing and people ad–pt an appropriate, playful style of relating to these processes. It also explores the theories of Roger Caillois, Mikhail Bakhtin, Clifford Geertz, Victor Turner, Don Handelman, and Richard Schechner. The chapter concludes with an analysis of Jacques Derrida's thesis that cultural patterns can be read as texts containing widely diverging trails of meaning, along with Hans-Georg Gadamer's interpretive approach to play.

Abstract:
Why have the major post-9/11 US military interventions turned into quagmires? Despite huge power imbalances in the United States' favor, significant capacity-building efforts, and repeated tactical victories by what many observers call the world's best military, the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq turned intractable. The US government's fixation on zero-sum, decisive victory in these conflicts is a key reason why military operations to overthrow two developing-world regimes failed to successfully achieve favorable and durable outcomes. In Zero-Sum Victory, retired US Army colonel Christopher D. Kolenda identifies three interrelated problems that have emerged from the government's insistence on zero-sum victory. First, the US government has no organized way to measure successful outcomes other than a decisive military victory, and thus, selects strategies that overestimate the possibility of such an outcome. Second, the United States is slow to recognize and modify or abandon losing strategies; in both cases, US officials believe their strategies are working, even as the situation deteriorates. Third, once the United States decides to withdraw, bargaining asymmetries and disconnects in strategy undermine the prospects for a successful transition or negotiated outcome. Relying on historic examples and personal experience, Kolenda draws thought-provoking and actionable conclusions about the utility of American military power in the contemporary world—insights that serve as a starting point for future scholarship as well as for important national security reforms.
