Vico s Scienza nuova introduces a proposal to science the Vico Variable which is clearly different from the prevailing variable, that of Modern Science as we understand it today, based on Newton s Mechanicism and in Descartes Rationalism, anchored in the Enlightenment of the 18th century and established, once and for all, in Comte s Positivism. In Vico, metaphysics no longer busies itself with the contemplation of and speculation about God, to bring its focus down to earth and seek, in History, that which had, until then, sought in the Divine Mind. To him, the knowledge of human affairs is that which can answer the question characteristic of all times concerning what Man is. The civil world of the Scienza nuova develops in the metaphysical realm, to whose study the new art of criticism is developed: a synergy between philosophical criticism and philological investigation, leading to Vico s hermeneutics, which takes advantage both of Reason and of the faculties of the spirit. In this hermeneutics, microcosm and macrocosm, man and society, particular and universal, are synthesized in constant analogies; the theory of the verum ipso factum is originally applied and the common sense of humanity becomes the supreme objective principle of historic evolution (a manifestation of Divine Providence) and as a subjective ground of a historic understanding. So as to situate nations in the development of the eternal ideal history , to evaluate its degrees of civility and the risks it is subject to, the Scienza nuova proposes, also, a diagnostic art, from which one may criticize the way which knowledge (Science and Education) is considered by the moderns in this time. Such criticism is not restricted to observations and considerations, but it sets the groundwork for an action it is, therefore, a Political Science through the proposal of a focus that is able to overcome the empire of the Mathesis Universalis, and thus, to contemplate, equally, the possibility of knowledge of the Ethical, Political and Human universes, interacting in a selfsame science. The Vico Variable is not only a way that has been forsaken on the road of the development of science; something which might have been. It is a philosophical orientation which privileges the practical life, the understanding of human behavior and civil life, which can be extended to thinkers who came after Vico, whose ideas allow the identification with outstanding aspects of his thought; a philosophical orientation which, identified with the emphasis Pico della Mirandola gave upon the Dignity of Man, can represent the emancipation of humanity

After situating Vico in the Naples of his time and in relation to the questions of modern rationality, as well as carrying out an exercise of philosophical reflection seeking the understanding of the worldview of Vico, this piece of work aims at making explicit the ethic that underlies his work as an ethic of teleological character which privileges the practical life, evidencing a concern for what man can and should do of himself, notwithstanding the guardianship of a divine providence in a cyclical history. However, within the advent of the "age of men," it is verified a process of unfoldment of the human nature in which the development of the individual starts to dictate the development of the community; at the same time, the predominance of abstract rationality dissociated from other human faculties – such as imagination – leads to a preponderant literality in the interpretation of mythology, which pervades the doctrines of religions, moving man away from piety, with the consequent loss of both social cohesion and the human sense of the world. Hence, man decays in the age of the gods, submitting himself to heteronomy in the face of the eternal ideal history. It is identified with the present thesis, therefore, the "master key" indicated by the Napolitan himself with the imagination that underlies poetic wisdom, the application of this interpretative key of the method of his work – the new critical art – is extended to the solution of the pretended paradox between the autonomy and the aimed happiness by a teleological ethic and the cyclical repetition of the eternal ideal history

Abstract: Vico has criticized the rationality of his time and he proposed another one as alternative: the key for this question is the concept of wit. Into his pedagogical program, Vico wished a synthesis among science, prudence, and eloquence. He suggested that it would be possible if one sharpen the young men's wit. Vico is not na irrationalist. His notion about the reason has humanist roots. He intended to overcome the Cartesian reason, in reaffirming the science of topical, the inventio, and the phantasy to enthrone the wit with a right faculty status of knowing. That allows him to make a profound study of the humanities. Vico has condemned the monachal and solitarian feature of the philosophies from the turn of the XVII century to XVIII century, and he prevented us against the evil of the "rational selfish" that society from his time was taken with. Vico is not a solitary thinker. Before seeing him as a forerunner or conservator, it is rather situate him in his own time, answering the last news of the republic letters since that time. The interest of the contribution that Vico emphasized in his discourses was put in practice into the context of the famous Quarrel between the Ancients and the Moderns, more specifically about the question of the Homer's status - a problem that demanded from Vico his wit. The four aspects of the wit, the acuity, the inventiveness, the citizeness prudence, and the historical presence, bring under light the rationality that was thought by Vico

Full textThis dissertation aims to examine the role of imagination in the work New Science of the Neapolitan philosopher Giambattista Vico (1668-1744). The focus of the research is to present the imagination as a concept of unity of knowledge and function of knowledge. For this purpose the dissertation begins with the image title page analysis present in the Scienza Nuova of 1744. This analysis will explore the design, trends and influences that led to the drafting of the image on the title page. An explanation of key concepts relevant follows for interpretation of the viquian opus, decoded from the hieroglyphs present on the title page. After showing the inventiveness of Vico to apply his imagination theory in his own work to achieve the reader, the research seeks to deepen the imagination of the theme as sensorial knowledge of the first people, the poetic wisdom, universal fantastic, the operation of the poetic mind and its requirements as a viquian topical and common sense. This intent aims to understand the contemporary attitude of Vico in his time, his conflicts against divergent school of thought and his concern for the future of humanity

Full textBIM stands for Building Information Modeling and has led to major changes in the construction industry, but despite this, the technology is not used fully. This is partly because some players feel more comfortable in the manual methods. The technology that is available can be particularly applied in the performance of amount calculation. In the current situation, some calculus engineers choose to perform amount calculation manually based on PDF drawings in print format using the program SpeedyCalc and also with pen and shell stock. This may instead be implemented in calculation program Vico Office with the help of a 3D model. The aim of the thesis is to compare two methods used for the amount calculation in time and cost perspective. The methods that were compared in this study was manual calculation and calculation program Vico Office. The study's purpose was also to compare the errors that may arise in the performance of these two methods. For study purposes, the authors conducted a number of interviews in which important information was collected. The authors also participated in two courses to gain the knowledge needed to facilitate the study. These courses focused on modeling program ArchiCAD and Vico Office. The authors also collected information by studying previous research in the area concerned. The amount calculation in this study was carried out on the project “Promenade”, which the authors reserved by Peab. The project is a multi-family apparment which consists of five buildings with four to six floors. The study was limited to three buildings and the major structural elements including for instance walls, doors and windows. The study demonstrated that the implementation of BIM in the tender stage results in a shorter time and at lower cost in amount calculation. When the different amount calculation methods prepared against each other, the difference in the amount of, for example a fan room wall was 100%, meaning that the fan room wall was missed during manual amount calculation.

Full textThis work is the result of the research developed about the conception of the certum in Giambattista Vico. Our interest was to found, in the various philosophical writings of G. Vico (1668-1744), a new way of understanding the original conception of the thinker about knowledge and how he worked and seized this vision of the world, unlike the traditional view which gave a logical value to the way of knowing before the true and false. Vico conceived the knowledge both as certum and verum, highlighting the original role of certum. This new way of perceiving the order of certum gives to the Vico´s knowing its own logic: the logic of credible. The credibility is treated like the element which leads us to the certainty before the exclusion of all mathematical accuracy given to knowledge in providing the possibility of reaching it in its uncertain scope and / or its uncertain boundaries.

In the 17th century, Neapolitan philosopher Giambattista Vico criticizes Cartesianism, refuting the thesis that the Natural Sciences could reach the truth. His thought reclaims, to imagination, language and history - dimensions neglected by rationalist thinking - a priority status for the acquisition of credible knowledge. The exacerbated attention to purely rational activities such as mathematics and logic for knowledge acquisition, according to Vico, would lead mankind to a sort of "barbarism" taking it to dehumanization. For Vico, to do is to know and vice-versa. We can only know what we do. To men, it is not possible to know nature in its essence, for they are not its creator. However, man creates history and, therefore, may know it. The historical traces brought by philology, added to the philosophical reflection, may lead man to knowledge. With his maxim verum et factum convertuntur, (I know because I do, I do because I know), Vico places man as a producer of depictive models of the world, who makes use of imagination and ingeniousness (creation) to conceive the reality. From this Vichian maxim, we aim, in this study, to analyze the relevance of imagination and ingeniousness faculties in the processes of scientific models development. In the first chapter, we try to understand the main concepts of the Vichian thinking; after that, in the second chapter, we define the concepts aggregated with the imaginative faculty, like the memory, the ingeniousness and the fantasy. Vico suggests expand the validation of knowledge beyond the scrutiny of logic reasoning. Thus, in the third chapter, we investigate the exercise of imagination as a preponderant factor for the hypotheses elaboration and for the generation of new models in science.

Full textThis study aims to prove the scientific character of Vico's new science and its complexity. The New Science epistemology will appear, through our analyse, the result of three basic components: rhetoric, jurisprudence and natural science. Without denying the fundamental function of sensible and imaginative determinations, we will try to show the importance of rational determination in the New Science, and indeed in Vico's entire output. This reading will allow us to examine the distinctively anthropologic nature of the science "concerning the common nature of the nations" and to dwell upon the civil interpretation of the myth which it provides. Subsequently, we will try to lay the foundations of an actualisation and an application of the vichian hermeneutics of myth, by comparison with the phenomenological and irrationalist tendency of contemporaneous studies of mythology and history of religions

Full textThe work analyzes the metaphysics of Giambattista Vico with the aim of delineating its characteristics and describing its developments during the entire course of the Neapolitan philosopher's speculation (1699-1744). For this purpose it was decided to deepen the relationship of Vico's doctrines with his sources - in particular Plato and Malebranche - and of the seventeenth-eighteenth-century debate in which they were originally inserted. The fundamental idea that we intend to propose is that the entire development of Vico's metaphysical speculation can be interpreted as a continuous rethinking of an initial - and never questioned - ontologist inspiration.

By placing reason and its two modalities, community and politics, at the core of this study, I am led to offer a general interpretation of the Scienza nuova through what Vico calls his " two practices ", namely " the art of criticism " and " the art of diagnosis ". Such an interpretation enables me to discuss the notions of prudence, ingenium, philology, " ideal eternal history " and education. I show how these concepts are organized around a scientific project whose object is " the common nature of nations "

Full textThe 21st century has witnessed jarring set-backs in the spread of the liberal democracy around the globe, as well as domestic challenges to the liberal form of government where it has been long established. By interrogating the root principles of the liberal theory of progress, this study aims to account for both the overwhelming success of the liberal progress in the latter half of the twentieth century, as well as its mounting failures in the early twenty-first century. It is argued that the liberal theory of progress rests on an unstable synthesis of two competing modern political philosophies, which are identified as ideology and the philosophy of history. The latter offers a theory of mankind’s historical development toward reason, while the former provides a blueprint for the construction of the rational state. Before these modern philosophies were synthesized in the liberal theory of progress, they emerged in opposition to one another, in the works of Thomas Hobbes and Giambattista Vico. The first chapter introduces the political philosophy of Hobbes’ Leviathan, and examines Hobbes’s teaching about nature and art, power and public opinion, culture and civil religion. On this basis, the Leviathan is shown to inaugurate the ideological form of politics, of which liberalism is one example. Chapter two defines ideology and traces its history, demonstrating the common source of all modern ideologies in a foundational egalitarianism that replaces the natural politics of rule. Chapter three addresses the modern philosophy of history, inaugurated by Vico’s New Science. An account of the genesis of this philosophy is presented and contrasted with Leo Strauss’ account. The fourth chapter considers Vico’s political teaching and his opposition to the modern theories of natural law, including especially that of Hobbes. Rejecting the view that Vico should be characterized as an enemy of the Enlightenment, this chapter examines his teaching about the historicity of human nature as reflected in religion, justice, poetry, philosophy and the political cycle of human history, and concludes with a discussion of the “barbarism of reflection,” in which all progress is said to comes to an end. These studies of Hobbes and Vico indicate the points of greatest tension within the liberal theory of progress, and prepare the way for a future critical study of liberal theory of progress in Kant and his successors

It is a complex project; and it is accomplished at different moments from a confront with the mentalist conception of language. Vico considers Descartes method and the Port-Royal logicism, the so-called linguistic Cartesianism, an extremely reductionist perspective that set aside the social and the expressive dimension of linguistic phenomena. The aims of the present work is to trace back the main moments of Vicos project (what shall be done through an analysis of Vicos first works), show how it appears in the Scienza Nuova, mainly in its last edition (1744); and shed light on the new perspectives of Vicos thought, compared to the philosophical tradition he wants to set himself at a distance; and, finally, point out the very place of the Italian philosopher in the linguistic studies. We uphold that the core of Vicos project consists in a new sort of rapport that the philosopher establishes between the linguistic developments, the modifications (modificazioni) of mind and of the human institutions. We shall see that the intelligibility of that process involves the creation of a new method or new critical art that, considering a conception of language which is more complex than the linguistic Cartesianism, make the construction of human institutions clear, show how it develops itself and how it operates throughout the time.

Full textThis research aims to evidence the existing similarities between the proposal of Giambattista Vico about the beginning of the heathen civilization and rabbinic arguments about the episode of the Flood, in Genesis 6, considered a document conserved for Jewish oral and verbal traditions. We searched for the beddings of literature Jewish and Greek-Roman that allowed Vico to intuit a method for the verification of human beings sciences. Such method differs from the deductive method, acclaimed for the intellectuals of its time: the Italian philosopher believes that the religion is present in the base of the civilization process and places the language as the phenomenon that organizes the world. We showed - in the vichian postulates and the rabbinic arguments about the first chapters of Genesis - the comments that focus the intrinsic characteristics which induce the men to institute the three perpetual principles (religion, marriages and sepultures), identifiable in the formation of the nations everywhere; we pointed the three vichian phases (divine, heroic and human being) in the Jewish texts and we evidence, in the rabbinic view of world, the beddings used as base for the elaboration of the vichian concept about the favour; such concept is responsible for the division of the humanity between heathen and Hebrews allowing conjectures about the existence of giants in the time of the Flood

Full textThe development in the construction industry is slowly but surely moving forward. The industry has begun to understand the successes and opportunities of digitizing itself, but it is a long journey that is constantly improving. In the construction industry's digitization, it is mostly common that it talks about BIM, a concept that has many different meanings. Simply explained, it is about connecting a 3D model with different types of information, which can provide many opportunities for streamlining the construction of the building and the project. It is mainly talked about the possibility of obtaining a 4D (time) and 5D (cost) models through a 3D model. Many housing production companies have begun their journey towards a digital world and JM AB is definitely one of them. In 2018, JM AB began to work with its ambition to one day be the leading actor in the industry of digitization. Part of the digitization work takes place within the calculations department at JM, where the department in this now makes quantity and cost estimations in the Vico Office program. It is the calculations department that produces the production costing for the construction start and this is also done in VO. Thanks to the development in digitalization, they can now make clear connections between time schedule and costs with 3D models as a base. A calculation that is not linked in this way is the overhead cost calculation. This requires a study into how the calculation can be linked to a 5D model and in the long run be able to contribute to the development of the production costing, which for us is the purpose of the report. This study focuses on developing various key figures for overhead costs that can be linked to 5D calculation. In this process, interviews with experts have been required, in order to get a clear picture of both, who establishes the calculations and how they are produced. To confirm and strengthen what has been said in the interviews, literature in the form of articles and books has been used. The result in the report shows what is required in 5D calculation of the production costing in VO. It also shows which key figures have been produced based on data from the specified comparison projects. In order for the key figures to be best visualized and reported in VO, they need to be linked to a time frame, which in this case is the projects timetable. The aim of the report has been to improve the analysis of estimated production costs with the application of 5D calculation. The compilation of key figures on costs, which is visualized in VO, aims to optimize the projects by producing better connections between cost and time. The report's reliability must of course be validated on the basis of the company's, JM, response to the rapport. This visualization and key figures presentation are an example of how a possible approach might look. The procedure and the 5D visualization are also the first of its kind within the company JM AB.

The insights provided by this exercise, however, demonstrate that the making of architecture as promoted by the Campo Marzio is not unlicensed Romantic freedom, but a fundamental, culturally-bound human activity. The paper concludes, moreover, that the making of the Campo Marzio interpretively re-enacts the original imaginative founding of the Eternal City and, as such, constitutes an attempt to re-found Heroic Rome.

Abstract: In the 17th century, Neapolitan philosopher Giambattista Vico criticizes Cartesianism, refuting the thesis that the Natural Sciences could reach the truth.

Full textFrom 1900 to 1914, the inhabitants of the Eugubinogualdese, a low mountain area in the Umbrian Apennines, migrated massively to several mining fields located on both sides of the Atlantic, in Luxembourg and the Lorraine region, in Pennsylvania, in Kansas, and around the Great Lakes. Owing to the migrants’ repeated moves and numerous destinations, aggregate data are of little use to study the labor migrations of Europeans in the Atlantic economies in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Not only does a confusion between moves and migrants produce unreliable estimates of the volume and the composition of the migration flows, but the only way to understand how and why migrants moved as they did in several directions within the Atlantic economies is by retracing their individual and family migration histories. In the case of Fossato di Vico, a small town at the very heart of the Eugubinogualdese, personal data have been collected in Italy, in the United States and in Luxembourg to compile two distinct data bases on the migrants and their families. As a result, some new light has been cast on the labor migrations in the Atlantic economies : aspects of the individuals’ mobility have been documented, the impact of the migrants’ repeated and multidirectional moves on aggregate-data-based estimates has been ‘measured’, the migrants’ social space and strategies have been scrutinized and, last but not least, the place of women in the labor migrations as well as that of the United States in the Atlantic economies have been reassessed

Full textReplacing an already functioning but old process can be time consuming and unprofitable. This has been demonstrated especially in the construction industry, where digitization is progressing slowly. This study examines what aspects of the traditional process of quantity takeoff as well as calculation process at the company BTH Bygg AB will be affected when changing to a process based on modeling and BIM, Building Information Modeling. The purpose of the study is to compare the traditional quantity takeoff and calculation with the aid of Bluebeam and MAP against a process that is carried out with modeling in the software ArchiCAD with a connection to Vico Office for quantity takeoff and calculation. The difference from the traditional process will be to move from 2D manual quantity takeoff to using 3D models, BIM models, and performing automatic calculations via Vico Office. The study is a qualitative study with elements of a quantitative survey where the focus on getting the most work-efficient and profitable solution for BTH Bygg. Comparisons between two different construction projects has been made. The projects comprises similar size and conditions as well as limited to calculations of floors, interior walls and ceilings. The basis for the study has been personal interviews with people from the calculation section at BTH Bygg to gather knowledge about their process for quantity takeoff and calculation. Interviews with employees of the companies for the software Bluebeam, ArchiCAD and Vico Office have also been carried out to obtain an objective picture of all the software. The conclusion is that implementing information-rich BIM models in the quantity takeoff and calculation has proved to be profitable when it comes to quality through reduced manual work when connecting between software. In addition, there are great opportunities for saving time in other stages by working in an integrated process where all parts of the con- struction process are linked to each other.

Full textBIM stands for Building Information Modeling. This means that you have a common buildingmodel that contains information relevant to all members of the building process . Thedifference between a 3D and BIM model is in addition to visualization that you have access tomore dimensions such as time and cost. This leads to greater clarity for all members during abuilding's life cycle. IFC for mat is a neutral file format that facilitates information exchangebetween different BIM tools. IFC format has been developed by the construction industry andis not owned by any supplier. VDC, which stands for Virtual Design Construction, is NCC's way ofworking on projectslinked to BIM. VDC provides the opportunity to provide the user with updated information tounderstand the customer's wishes and how to impleme nt it. A part of this work includesinvestigating new methods of quantity takeoff and comparing them. The purpose of the thesis work was to compare 4 different methods ofquantity takeoff basedon time and quality. The 4 different methods were Vico Office, Solibri, Bluebeam and thetraditional quantity takeoff by hand (manual) manual). The quantity take off was limited only to theamount of non bearing inner walls in the project. Vico Office, Solibri, Bluebeam andquantity takeoff by hand are the 4 methods reviewed. Thebasis for the quantity take off has been an IFC file and 2D drawings. From the IFC file, takeoffwas made in Vico Office and Solibri. The 2D drawings were used to obtain quantities fromBluebeam and by hand. The quantity take off results in a comparison of the quantities that wasreceived . Summary of quantities has been carried out in Excel. Thequantities has been collected from Kvarteret Pedagogen which is a new construction ofmulti family houses in Karslundsskogen . It consists of 3 houses with 55 apartments on 5floors. Building start was 2015 an d today the project is complete. The result showed significant differences between the four meth ods. The results showed thatSolibri Model Checker is the software that is best suited for quantity takeoff when consideringtime and quantity. It was also the most user friendly of the 4 methods.

Full textThe main objective of this work is to analyze the variations of the meaning of the sublime by Vico and determine how the sublime, as the trigger moment of « andar raccogliendo », participates in the foundation of political community. It’s from the lightning-experience, of the sublime moment that begins the long process of development of the « bestioni » mind who wandered in the great post diluvian forests. By a vigorous imagination, they created the « universals fantastics » or « poetic characters, » which will be their first mode of apprehension of the world. So they are ready to leave their raw state to gradually reach humanity? Thus, at this the concept of «fantastics universals » that Vico founded his new science. In this way, he rehabilitates the imagination, fantasia, and gives it an important role of searching the truth, by proposing a reflection that takes into account all the properties of the human mindset. As a fervent defender of this discipline placed outside the field of knowledge by certain philosophers including Descartes, Vico studied the transformation of the human spirit through different moments of its evolution. So he invented entirely based on « aesthetic sublime ». His approach reminds us Kant, who, in his first criticism, defines basic rules of knowledge starting from the sensitive. The possibility of thinking on sublime as the Neapolitan philosopher not being limited to the poetic age, it should be determined during the passage from the poetic age to the age of « fully developed reason ». Considered as the moment where all symbolic references are suspended, the sublime has the particularity of modifying the order of things to bring out new symbolics institutions. This is what we observe in the new science, during the raising of the plebians against the patriarchy. It is this sublime moment that will favor the emergence of democracy in the cities, which Marc Richir called « sublime in politic». There is a connection between them, as they both reflected the problem of the socio-political foundation

Full textFrench liberals at the beginning of the restoration were faced with the doubly complex task of establishing both a foundation and an interpretation for the civil code. Cousin derives the basis from a divine law of kantian inspiration which, resounding within the heart of every man, implies that an individual's freedom is limited by his respect for that of his fellow man. A society defined in this manner is of an ideal nature. Indeed, a basis is established for the code as a set of laws, but this philosophical foundation alone does not constitute grounds for jurisprudence, which must essentially rely upon reality. The roots for this reality, or social setting, cannot be taken from tradition, for this would signify a return to the former system. Nor can they be derived from folks ways and practices. Instead the model for jurisprudence is taken from the roman jurisconsults, and the code is now seen as a modern resuscitation of roman law. Hence, at the very moment when reality would appear to diverge from the ideal, jourdan asserts that the two actually converge, at the expence of substituting ancient rome for the reality of france. It is at this point that vico is invoked in order to ensure the convergence between reality and the ideal, between history and philosophy, between the facts and the law. This appeal to the theories of vico can be considered valid only if the principle itself by which the neopolitan affirms the presence of the ideal in reality remains unquestioned. This "heroic principle", which stipulates that man creates the civil world, gives way to a necessarily democratic entity at some point in time where each individual takes part in the drawing-up of laws. After close examination of this moment, both ballanche and michelet are compelled to question the principle of representation upon which the liberal concept is based, to redefine the relationship between the civil sphere and the political sphere and, finally, to attribute to the plebians in the one case, and to the people in the other, a role as a driving force in history
