Abstract:
This chapter explores Constantine’s rise to power, mustering evidence from Pan. Lat. VII and VI to argue that Constantine should be seen as a usurper and to defend the idea that he escaped the court of Galerius in 306. The chapter then explores how an individual’s reputation could be transformed by examining the way Maximian was portrayed as a monster in Pan. Lat. VI. The chapter then considers the war of 312 between Maxentius and Constantine, and discusses how Pan. Lat. XII and IV participated in shaping an image of Maxentius as a tyrant who was destroying Rome, an image which served to legitimate Constantine’s invasion of Italy and his progressive breakaway from the tetrarchy. Finally, the chapter considers the silence of Pan. Lat. XII and IV on the topic of Licinius, and draws the conclusion that the alliance that existed between Constantine and Licinius was always a cold one.

Bampi, Massimiliano, and Anna Katharina Richter, eds. The Eufemiaviser and the Reception of Courtly Culture in Late Medieval Denmark – Die dänischen Eufemiaviser und die Rezeption höfischer Kultur im spätmittelalterlichen Dänemark. Narr Francke Attempto Verlag GmbH + Co. KG, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.24053/9783772057502.

Full text
Abstract:
This book presents texts which are a unique testimony in Danish literature between the Late Middle Ages and the Early Modern period: the so-called Eufemiaviser (Eufemia poems), courtly verse romances, translated into Danish via Old French and Old Swedish sources in the later part of the 15th century. These texts have hardly been studied in Scandinavian research so far.

Neuwirth, Angelika. Locating the Qurʾan and Early Islam in the ‘Epistemic Space’ of Late Antiquity. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198748496.003.0005.

Full text
Abstract:
Locating the qur’anic event in Late Antiquity, understood not as a historical epoch but an epistemic space, the chapter focuses on textual strategies rather than on the transfer of semantic knowledge or extra-textual circumstances. Qurʾanic speech oscillates between literal and ‘allegorical’ expression. Among the last mentioned, typology, hitherto widely neglected—although perhaps the most representative textual practice in the late antique culture of debate—appears a useful key to the question of the qur’anic community’s rapid development of a theology of its own and its attainment of social coherence. Sifting the changing modes of qur’anic typology—from the ‘simple’ mode of restaging biblical events and the mimesis of biblical figures via the more demanding pattern of promise and fulfilment to the daringly innovative mode: mythopoiesis—allows us to trace the successive stages of the first listeners’ construction of a communal identity of their own.

Wood, Martyn, and Marilyn Bradley. Syphilis. Edited by Patrick Davey and David Sprigings. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780199568741.003.0313.

Full text
Abstract:
The term ‘syphilis’ describes the wide-ranging clinical manifestations of infection with the slowly dividing spirochete bacterium Treponema pallidum subsp. pallidum. T. pallidum infection is mainly sexually acquired; it is thought the bacterium enters through microabrasions in the skin or mucosa. Congenital infection via mother-to-child transmission is also recognized. The driving force of the clinical manifestations of all stages of syphilis is an underlying and often multisystem vasculitis. Acquired syphilis can be divided into early and late presentations. In early stage infection, the T. pallidum infection has been acquired within 2 years of the diagnosis. This early stage includes the symptomatic primary and secondary stages of infection, and the asymptomatic early latent stage. Late infection of over 2 years’ standing includes all the manifestations of tertiary syphilis and asymptomatic late latent infection. This chapter discusses syphilis, including its demographics, etiology, natural history, complications, diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment.

Summerfield, Mark. The Earliness of Mahler’s Late Romanticism. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199316090.003.0003.

Full text
Abstract:
The music of late Mahler recurrently features an elision of the traditional deceptive and perfect cadence progressions into a V–VI–I progression: a ‘deceptive perfect cadence.’ The way this progression is used in Mahler’s music can be related to Mahler’s descriptions of how musical works should be constructed, particularly his insistence on development, evolution, and the avoidance of clearly delineated boundaries. Schoenberg’s description of the use of the deceptive cadence to introduce a digression provides the basis for an alternative to descriptions of Mahler’s musical techniques, particularly those relating to closure or cadential practice, which concentrate on modernistic juxtapositions or the subversion of classical techniques. Instead, I will show how Mahler’s ‘digressive’ musical language relates to nineteenth-century conceptions of the organic fragment which reach back to the aesthetics of early romantics such as Wilhelm Friedrich Schlegel.
