Abstract:
In Our Veterans, Suzanne Gordon, Steve Early, and Jasper Craven explore the physical, emotional, social, economic, and psychological impact of military service and the problems that veterans face when they return to civilian life. The authors critically examine the role of advocacy organizations, philanthropies, corporations, and politicians who purport to be “pro-veteran.” They describe the ongoing debate about the cost, quality, and effectiveness of healthcare provided or outsourced by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). They also examine generational divisions and political tensions among veterans, as revealed in the tumultuous events of 2020, from Black Lives Matter protests to the Trump-Biden presidential contest. Frank and revealing, Our Veterans proposes a new agenda for veterans affairs linking service provision to veterans to the quest for broader social programs benefiting all Americans.

Abstract:
What happened to veterans of the nations involved in the world wars? How did they fare when they returned home and needed benefits? How were they recognized — or not — by their governments and fellow citizens? Where and under what circumstances did they obtain an elevated postwar status? This book examines veterans' struggles for entitlements and benefits in the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, Taiwan, the Soviet Union, China, Germany, and Australia after both global conflicts. It illuminates how veterans' success or failure in winning benefits were affected by a range of factors that shaped their ability to exert political influence. Some veterans' groups fought politicians for improvements to their postwar lives; this lobbying, the book shows, could set the foundation for beneficial veteran treatment regimes or weaken the political forces proposing unfavorable policies. The book highlights cases of veterans who secured (and in some cases failed to secure) benefits and status after wars both won and lost; within both democratic and authoritarian polities; under liberal, conservative, and even Leninist governments; after wars fought by volunteers or conscripts, at home or abroad, and for legitimate or subsequently discredited causes. Veterans who succeeded did so, for the most part, by forcing their agendas through lobbying, protesting, and mobilizing public support. The book provides a large-scale map for a research field with a future: comparative veteran studies.

Abstract:
The U.S. veteran population is aging, with 47.3% being age 65 or older in 2013. This chapter addresses the mental health of older veterans and the services and benefits available to them. Among older veterans, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is the most commonly diagnosed disorder, followed by alcohol use disorders and major depression. Cognitive disorders also place increased demands on services. The Veterans Health Administration (VHA) provides a broad array of mental health services across the full continuum of care. Older veterans, however, often do not connect with the VA (Veterans Administration) system until after retirement to take advantage of financial assistance offered by the VA, including service-connected disability pensions and healthcare. While the VA does not provide routine legal services to veterans, three elements of the justice system are available: (1) the Veterans Justice Outreach Program, (2) the Veterans Treatment Court, and (3) the Veterans Adjudication Process of Tort Claims. Also discussed in the chapter are goals identified by the Office of Geriatrics and Extended Care at the Department of Veterans Affairs to improve care for older veterans.

Abstract:
Companies that can hire and retain military veterans will have a strong competitive advantage over their competitors that lack this capability. This book will help business leaders obtain that advantage. The chapters in this book draw from the research and findings from Industrial/Organizational (I/O) psychology and Human Resources (HR) research to describe how to find, communicate with, recruit, develop, lead, and retain military veterans and their family members as civilian employees. Unlike other books on this topic that lack evidence-based content, this book draws upon science, research, and best practices to provide guidance organizations can implement to drive their success. Topics in this book include sourcing, communications, and recruiting military veterans and their spouses; reviewing résumés to extract cross-corporate competencies; branding your organization to successfully appeal to this population; understanding and challenging your misconceptions of the military and doing the same with veterans’ misperceptions of civilian employment; addressing culture mismatches between civilian and military cultures and improving cultural communication and understanding; improving person-job-organization fit for veterans and military family members to retain them in their jobs; providing culturally sensitive mentoring and leadership; understanding the training veterans receive and their personality traits and culture—and how these can benefit your organization; hiring and retaining wounded warriors and veterans with disabilities; creating and utilizing veteran mentoring programs and affinity groups; providing effective supervision for veteran employees; supporting National Guardsmen and Reservists working as civilian employees, and retaining these employees to gain a further competitive advantage for your organization.

Kleespies, Phillip M., and Christopher G. AhnAllen. Evaluating and Managing Suicide Risk in Veterans. Edited by Phillip M. Kleespies. Oxford University Press, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199352722.013.14.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the findings on which populations of military veterans are known to be at risk of suicide. The impact of military culture on veterans as well as the impact of deployment, combat trauma, and sexual trauma are discussed, as well as the difficulties of readjusting to civilian life, particularly when the veteran has served in a combat zone. The chapter reviews some of the barriers that veterans must deal with when in need of mental health care. The limits of suicide prediction are discussed and a model for assessing suicide risk using risk factors within high risk diagnoses, including risk in combat-related posttraumatic stress disorder, is presented. Finally, suggestions for managing suicide risk in veterans are discussed. Since veterans are more likely to own firearms and commit suicide with a firearm than nonveterans, an emphasis is placed on employing means restriction counseling for veterans at risk.

Abstract:
My final chapter considers a different type of minority community, US veterans. Although veterans today, particularly those with disabilities, are a minority population that comprises less than 1 per cent of the total population, in ancient Athens, veterans had a direct connection to ancient Greek drama, and the majority of the ancient playwrights and the audience would have had direct experience of combat. By focusing on Aquila Theatre’s A Female Philoctetes, and Outside the Wire’s Theater of War Ensemble’s reading of Sophocles’ Ajax, I explore the ways in which Greek drama can function to challenge the stereotype of the ‘disabled veteran’, but can also reinforce stereotypes about the members of this community, who struggle not only for equality but also with the process of reintegrating into civilian life.
