Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

In this dissertation а new wind power and energy measurementmethod, based on Stochastic Digital Measurement Method (SDMM),was elaborated and proposed, to replace the commonly used StandardSampling Method (SSM). The standard for wind speed measurement isa cup anemometer that provides a sinusoidal voltage on its output, having the amplitude and frequency linearly dependent of the windspeed. Since the wind power and energy are proportional to the thirddegree of the wind speed, the general case hardware has been designedfor the product calculation over three input signals. The low frequencyrange of the input signal allows for a significant simplification of themeasuring instrument hardware. By theoretical analysis andsimulation, and consequently through an experiment the hypothesis ofthis research was confirmed - that SDMM can be successfully used tomeasure wind power and energy.

I övrigt fanns inga signifikanta resultat.

Abstract:

Abstract:
AbstractLarge language models have enabled the rapid production of misleading or fake narratives, presenting a challenge for direct detection methods. Considering that generative artificial intelligence tools are likely to be used either to inform or to disinform, evaluating the (non)human nature of machine-generated content is questioned, especially regarding the ‘hallucination’ phenomenon, which relates to generated content that does not correspond to real-world input. In this study, we argue that assessing machine-generated content is most reliable when done by humans because doing so involves critical consideration of the meaning of the information and its informative, misinformative or disinformative value, which is related to the accuracy and reliability of the news. To explore human-based judgement methods, we developed the Information Disorder Level (IDL) index, a language-independent metric to evaluate the factuality of machine-generated content. It has been tested on a corpus of forty made-up and actual news stories generated with ChatGPT. For newsrooms using generative AI, results suggest that every piece of machine-generated content should be vetted and post-edited by humans before being published. From a digital media literacy perspective, the IDL index is a valuable tool to understand the limits of generative AI and trigger a reflection on what constitutes the factuality of a reported event.

Abstract:
In our current era of disinformation, ready access to trustworthy sources is critical. “Fake news,” sophisticated disinformation campaigns, and propaganda distort the common reality, polarize communities, and threaten open democratic systems. What citizens, journalists, and policymakers need is a canonical source of trusted information. For millions, that trusted source resides in the books and journals housed in libraries, curated and vetted by librarians. Yet today, as we turn inevitably to our screens for information, if a book isn’t digital, it is as if it doesn’t exist. To address this gap, the Internet Archive is actively working with the world’s great libraries to digitize their collections and to make them available to users via controlled digital lending, a process whereby libraries can loan digital copies of the print books on their shelves. By bringing millions of missing books and academic literature online, libraries can empower journalists, researchers, and Wikipedia editors to cite the best sources directly in their work, grounding readers in the vetted, published record, and extending the investment that libraries have made in their print collections.

Leis, Sherry. Network scale fire atlas supports land management in national parks. Edited by Tani Hubbard. National Park Service, November 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.36967/2295133.

Full text
Abstract:
Long-term vegetation monitoring allows land managers to make treatment decisions based on data. Fire management is a commonly used approach to managing grasslands, but fire history in grasslands is challenging to record because of spatial and temporal scales and rapid ecosystem recovery. We built a seven-park fire occurrence record (fire atlas) using a geodatabase tool. Multiple sources for fire perimeters were vetted using a verification and editing process. The fire occurrence geodatabase was then used as the basis for an analysis that used buffering around monitoring site locations to determine burned status through time. The resulting products were beneficial for communicating with managers, administrators, and fire staff. Planning and education projects were also important uses of the information. Future efforts will focus on improving attribute consistency and relating vegetation trends to fire occurrence.

Roberson, Madeleine, Kathleen Inman, Ashley Carey, Isaac Howard, and Jameson Shannon. Probabilistic neural networks that predict compressive strength of high strength concrete in mass placements using thermal history. Engineer Research and Development Center (U.S.), June 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.21079/11681/44483.

Full text
Abstract:
This study explored the use of artificial neural networks to predict UHPC compressive strengths given thermal history and key mix components. The model developed herein employs Bayesian variational inference using Monte Carlo dropout to convey prediction uncertainty using 735 datapoints on seven UHPC mixtures collected using a variety of techniques. Datapoints contained a measured compressive strength along with three curing inputs (specimen maturity, maximum temperature experienced during curing, time of maximum temperature) and five mixture inputs to distinguish each UHPC mixture (cement type, silicon dioxide content, mix type, water to cementitious material ratio, and admixture dosage rate). Input analysis concluded that predictions were more sensitive to curing inputs than mixture inputs. On average, 8.2% of experimental results in the final model fell outside of the predicted range with 67.9%of these cases conservatively underpredicting. The results support that this model methodology is able to make sufficient probabilistic predictions within the scope of the provided dataset but is not for extrapolating beyond the training data. In addition, the model was vetted using various datasets obtained from literature to assess its versatility. Overall this model is a promising advancement towards predicting mechanical properties of high strength concrete with known uncertainties.

Alwan, Iktimal, Dennis D. Spencer, and Rafeed Alkawadri. Comparison of Machine Learning Algorithms in Sensorimotor Functional Mapping. Progress in Neurobiology, December 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.60124/j.pneuro.2023.30.03.

Full text
Abstract:
Objective: To compare the performance of popular machine learning algorithms (ML) in mapping the sensorimotor cortex (SM) and identifying the anterior lip of the central sulcus (CS). Methods: We evaluated support vector machines (SVMs), random forest (RF), decision trees (DT), single layer perceptron (SLP), and multilayer perceptron (MLP) against standard logistic regression (LR) to identify the SM cortex employing validated features from six-minute of NREM sleep icEEG data and applying standard common hyperparameters and 10-fold cross-validation. Each algorithm was tested using vetted features based on the statistical significance of classical univariate analysis (p<0.05) and extended () 17 features representing power/coherence of different frequency bands, entropy, and interelectrode-based distance. The analysis was performed before and after weight adjustment for imbalanced data (w). Results: 7 subjects and 376 contacts were included. Before optimization, ML algorithms performed comparably employing conventional features (median CS accuracy: 0.89, IQR [0.88-0.9]). After optimization, neural networks outperformed others in means of accuracy (MLP: 0.86), the area under the curve (AUC) (SLPw, MLPw, MLP: 0.91), recall (SLPw: 0.82, MLPw: 0.81), precision (SLPw: 0.84), and F1-scores (SLPw: 0.82). SVM achieved the best specificity performance. Extending the number of features and adjusting the weights improved recall, precision, and F1-scores by 48.27%, 27.15%, and 39.15%, respectively, with gains or no significant losses in specificity and AUC across CS and Function (correlation r=0.71 between the two clinical scenarios in all performance metrics, p<0.001). Interpretation: Computational passive sensorimotor mapping is feasible and reliable. Feature extension and weight adjustments improve the performance and counterbalance the accuracy paradox. Optimized neural networks outperform other ML algorithms even in binary classification tasks. The best-performing models and the MATLAB® routine employed in signal processing are available to the public at (Link 1).
