MANGIAFESTA, MARIA. "La fortuna delle Vestali tra il 1400 e il 1600." Doctoral thesis, Università degli Studi di Roma "Tor Vergata", 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/2108/942.
Full textHere we wish to study the fortunate dynamic of the “theme” of Vesta, tutelary divinity of the sacred hearth, and of her priestesses, the Vestals. Beginning with the literary sources of Pirro Ligorio and Ulisse Aldrovandi, continuing through the analysis of various Renaissance sketchbooks, and thanks also to the perusal of the inventories of the various collections, Vesta and the Vestal Virgins have been found in all of the most important collections of antiquities, as for example, those of the Colonna, Porcari, Mattei, Pichi, Paluzzi Albertoni, Farnese, Lisca, Belvedere Vaticano, Cesi, Orsini, Soderini, Medici, Altieri, Ludovisi, Giustiniani, Pamphilj, Massimo, Chigi, Carpegna. In the 16th century the great archaeological excavations, promoted by influential personalities, brought about the discovery of sculptures, coins and reliefs, recognized like that, thanks also to the rediscovery of the classical texts, useful for the reconstruction of the history of ancient Rome, and to the sites of discovery. On the other hand, during the 17th century, changes were felt in the artistic climate, so Orfeo Boselli suggested the restorations of statues like Vestals or Muses or Igea. Only through Lanciani’s excavations in the Atrium Vestae, at the end of the 19th century, we have been able to shed light on the area dedicated to the Vestal Virgins and on their appearance. Other useful information emerged thanks to the re-examination of the history of the archaeological excavations conducted in Rome, from the 15th to the 17th centuries, in Campo Marzio, the Esquiline Hill, the Horti Asiniani, Porta Capena, the Aventine Hill, the Lateran zone, and the Janicolo Hill, sites from which many of the antiquities being studied were excavated. In addition, the rediscovery in the 19th century, in the Baths of Caracalla, of a statue with a seated deity, which has been compared with the Vesta on Dodekatheon and with the seated statue in the Vatican Gardens, can perhaps contribute to shed light on the statue which Pliny saw in the Horti Asiniani When we consider the fresco showing Vesta, found in a pistrinum in a private home in Pompei, we can advance the hypothesis that also in Rome, in private residences, there may have been created sacred areas, dedicated to Vesta, the divinity of the hearth, where perhaps some of the sculptures we have taken into consideration, or perhaps the reliefs that come from the Lateran area showing the faithful bearing offerings, may have been placed.

Full textAsteroids Vesta and Ceres motivated the space mission Dawn because they represent two different planetary embryos that remained relatively intact since their formation. Vesta is broadly considered as the parent body of the HED meteorites suite that are witnesses of a magmatic activity probably due to the presence of the radioactive isotope 26 Al which was present in significant amount to cause internal melting of primitive rocky bodies. The composition of a planetary surface can be quantified through the analysis of the gamma rays it produces. This is made possible for the Dawn spacecraft by the instrument GRaND and the scintillation of a BGO crystal. This thesis presents the analysis of gamma ray spectra from Vesta by two blind source separation methods: the independent component analysis and the non negative matrix factorization. These methods are also applied to an equivalent lunar dataset already well interpreted. Lunar synthetic spectra are used to test ICA and NMF. The separation of elementary spectra is delicate although K, Th and Fe can be discriminated due to the more favorable statistical properties of their source signals. The sensitivity of separation to the chemical variability is assessed based on artificial lunar spectra, which allows to explain the lack of separation of a clear elemental signal in the case of Vesta. Despite the observations of Dawn and the important collection of HED data, there is no consensus on the conditions of the vestan magmatism. A global magma ocean is often put forward, whereas the migration of the heat source, contained in the easiest mineral to melt, plagioclase, does not allow it. A model of melt migration is implemented, based on two-phase flow equations. This model is combined with the olivine-anorthite-quartz equilibrium phase diagram. This allows to predict the mineralogy as a function of depth and time. Results obtained show that eucrites and diogenites may be a common feature of large bodies accreted early in solar system history

The shape and gravity field are fundamental properties of a planetary body. Combining gravity and topography data sets is, arguably, the most powerful tool to study planetary interiors from orbit. However, even when gravity and topography data are in hand, typically, a wide range of possible geophysical structures is possible. The reader will find that this problem of non-unique solutions permeates all chapters of this thesis. The general strategy to reduce non-uniqueness is to find ways to use additional observations that are sensitive to the interior structure but are not degenerate with gravity and/or topography. In this work, we study three Solar System bodies: asteroid Vesta, dwarf planet Ceres and the Earth's Moon. Using the data from the Dawn spacecraft, we find that once hot and hydrostatic, Vesta is no longer either. It was despun by two giant collisions. We use the Dawn gravity/topography data along with meteoritic data to provide constraints on Vesta's internal structure. Unlike Vesta, Ceres is close to hydrostatic equilibrium. Based on Ceres' topographic spectrum, we conclude that it has experienced limited viscous relaxation. Contrary to the pre-Dawn expectations, we find that the cerean crust is mechanically rock-like. We provide constraints on Ceres' rheology and density structure by combining gravity/topography data with finite-element modeling of lithospheric relaxation. Additionally, we find that Ceres' obliquity undergoes large oscillations, which has important implications for volatile transport. The GRAIL mission has produced gravity models of the Moon with an unprecedented accuracy. We study the spectral content of gravity models and characterize their effective resolution to provide users of these models with the information necessary to understand the model limitations.

Vaillant, Timothée. "Rotation à long terme des corps célestes et application à Cérès et Vesta." Thesis, Paris Sciences et Lettres (ComUE), 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018PSLEO005/document.
Full textThis thesis concerns the long-term rotation of celestial bodies. The first part is a study of the long-term rotation of Ceres and Vesta, the two heaviest bodies of the main asteroid belt. The spacescraft Dawn studied these two objects and determined the physical and rotational characteristics, which are necessary for the computation of their rotations. The ice distribution under and on the surface of Ceres depends on the evolution of the obliquity, which is the inclination of the equatorial plane on the orbital plane. As the rotations of Ceres and Vesta are fast, the long-term evolution of the spin axes of Ceres and Vesta was obtained by realizing a symplectic integration of the equations of the rotation averaged on the fast proper rotation. The stability of the spin axes of Ceres and Vesta was studied with respect to the parameters of the rotation with a secular and semi-analytical model, which allowed to show that the spin axes are not chaotic. The second part concerns the development of symplectic integrators dedicated to the rigid body. The integration of the proper rotation of a rigid body needs to integrate the equations given by the Hamiltonian of the free rigid body. This Hamiltonian is integrable and presents an explicit solution using the Jacobi elliptic functions. However, the numerical cost of these functions is high. When the Hamiltonian of the free rigid body is coupled to a potential energy, the orientation of the body is needed at each step, which increases the computation time. Symplectic integrators were then previously proposed for the free rigid body. In this work, symplectic integrators dedicated to the rigid body were developed using the properties of the Lie algebra of the angular momentum

This dissertation presents improvements made on position estimation techniques applied to seismology, airborne gravimetry and planetary gravity recovery. In Chapters 2 and 3, a smoothed ionospheric model computed using GPS phase observations was applied to seismology and airborne gravimetry. The seismic investigation observed the 2010 El Mayor-Cucapah earthquake near Baja, California. The application of the ionospheric model resulted in an overall 4 mm RMS reduction in the measurements of GPS heights. The same ionospheric technique was applied to GPS data collected during an airborne gravity survey. In this study the model improved the RMS spread of four repeat gravity profiles by 0.6 mGal. Chapters 4 and 5 focus on the Dawn mission to the asteroid 4 Vesta. Chapter 4 details the use of spacecraft image constraints in the orbit determination software GEODYN, which is used by NASA/GSFC for trajectory reconstruction and geophysical analyses of planets. Image constraints are shown to converge an orbit solution that differs from that computed by the Dawn Science Team at JPL by less than 13 m. Chapter 5 describes the application of the new technique in the estimation of the orientation parameters and low-degree gravity field of Vesta. The pole orientation and low-degree gravity field estimated agree with that presented by the Dawn Science Team through the use of an independent software and estimation algorithm.

Full textAutomobile exhaust is a major source of air pollution in urban areas. For studying short and long term health effects of this traffic air pollution (TAP) epidemiologists have to determine precisely exposure to such pollution to avoid misclassification. In France, the ExTra index produced by the French Scientific Center for Building Physics (CSTB) and the French National Institute for Transport and Safety Research (INRETS), estimates ambient concentrations of transport-related pollutants in front of the work and living places of urban dwellers. These estimates, combined with time-activity diaries, enable individual exposure to these pollutants in front of these living places to be assessed. Two pollutant dispersion models are used to calculate the ExTra index : the Danish model OSPM (Operational Street Pollution Model) and the CALINE3 model (California Line Source Dispersion Model). Before being applied to large scale epidemiological studies such as the VESTA study (a French multicentric case-control study on asthma), the ExTra index needs to be validated. This research had two goals : 1) to validate the ExTra index, 2) to apply this index to the VESTA study (V Epidemiological Study on Transport and Asthma). The validation study of the ExTra index was performed in four of the French towns participating in the VESTA study. This validation was based on the comparison of nitrogen oxide concentrations (NOx) obtained by measurement against those obtained from calculations, using the ExTra index and the OSPM model. The model was tested at 100 street canyon sites. Then, we used the ExTra index to assess lifelong nitrogen oxides concentrations the 403 study children were exposed to in front of their living places. This assessment highlighted significant disparities : mean ExTra index values and share attributable to proximity traffic were respectively 70 ± 42 and 14 ± 22 æg. M -3 NOx equivalent NO2 for the 403 children. Beyond the validation of the ExTra index for NOx concentrations and the description of the VESTA children's TAP exposures, the results obtained by a discriminant analysis (with classification trees) gave us guidelines for the use of this index (rather than background pollution levels provided by the networks) according to the different residence and school characteristics of a subject throughout his (her) life. .

Full textThe dynamical evolution of the spin axis direction due to gravitational and thermal factors is examined. It is found that the spin axis variations generally are regular and relatively small for the bodies in the asteroid main belt. There are also reasons to believe that this is the case for minor objects beyond the main belt. However, it is found that these regular variations are larger when the orbital inclination of the objects is increased. This effect may explain certain features in the spin vector distribution of the main belt asteroids, not possible to explain by collisional factors. The spin vector evolution of the asteroids in the inner solar system, including the Earth- and Mars-crossing objects, is often subjected to strong forces related to frequencies in the orbital evolution. The variations in the spin vector direction are then very large and often subjected to chaos. The larger frequency related obliquity zones of the Mars-crossers are usually regular while the zones of the Earth-Mars-crossers often are of a chaotic nature. The spin vector evolution of asteroids with comet-like orbits is often chaotic regardless of initial obliquity. For the inner solar system asteroids, it is often possible for an initial prograde spin to turn into a retrograde one, or vice versa, due to the frequency related phenomena. Though some spin vector directions seem to be more probable than other ones over time, there are no indications for an evolution towards a more prograde or a more retrograde spin vector distribution.
The effects on the spin vector evolution from the thermal Yarkovsky force are examined for objects with radii larger than 50 m. This force will affect the orbital evolution and thus indirectly affect the spin vector evolution. However, it is found that the studied effects are minor as compared to the gravitationally related ones. This is true both for the diurnal and the seasonal variants of the Yarkovsky force.

Full textThe present research exams the iconographical language used by cities representing themselves. The image of Goddess Tyche, as city protectress and city personification has been used for a long time by cities, in Hellenistic and roman times, representing their status. The iconographical model of Tyche has been investigated in its relationship with the various degrees of independence of the cities in the greek-oriental word, in Hellenistic and Roman period, showing there was a political ideology behind. The analysis of a coin from Seleucia on the Calycadnus, Cilicia (Turkey), shows the use of juridical concepts, with particular attention to the problems of integration and romanization of the greek cities. The situation changed after the Constitutio Antoniniana emanated by Emperor Caracalla. The image of Tyche also served as foundation myth for the cities, in micro-asiatic area or in roman area, as we can see on friezes in the Museo Nazionale Romano (Rome), from the Basilica Aemilia and Colombarius Esquilinus. The idea of a woman as city protectress is based on the iconographical model of Tyche, and many divinities shared with the goddess this protective role as Genius, Cybele, Dea Roma and the Amazons. The same female element is archeologically found in ritual burials under city boundaries , in particular under city walls and city gates. The burials and the ritual killings had an apothropaical function and connected the female element with the city foundation. This is reading key to understand the burial of the Vestals incestae, and the place of their burial near the city wall. The research exams the different uses of the image of Tyche, showing the iconographical importance of the goddess as representation of the cities in Roman Empire and in Rome itself.

The detailed study of the House of the Vestals at Pompeii reveals how water features were central to the house¿s structural changes from the late first century B.C. The owners of the house invested heavily in fountains and pools as key elements in the display of their wealth to visitors and passers-by alike. This article relates the structural development of the House of the Vestals to the social history of decorative water usage, from an initial investment exploiting the pressurized water provided by the new aqueduct early in the Augustan period to the responses to crises following the earthquake of A.D. 62

To detect the more original state of minor planets, now there is one mission exploring the main asteroids belt, Dawn Mission, and the destinations are Vesta, Ceres, and maybe Pallas. At the orbit between Mars and Jupiter, the region that main asteroids belt locates can be divided by the well-known boundary, snowline. Although the existence of water ice on Vesta hasn’t been found yet, many researches (cf. Fanale and Savail, 1987; Bar-Nun et al., 1989; Schorghofer, 2008) simulate the amount of water ice survived under dust mantle in the main asteroids belt. This thesis applies the 3D exospheric model, 3D thermal model and ray tracing to simulate the survival rate of water ice on Vesta. Moreover, the seasonal effect on Vesta makes the diurnal temperature different, which also changes the region of adsorption and cold traps. The proposed ray tracing model can be used to compute the seasonal change of solar radiation flux which dominates the diurnal temperature. However, the mean free path of molecules in the exosphere of Vesta is dominated by the gravity. Since the shape of Vesta is not spherical, the proposed exospheric model also applies the elliptical gravity.

Full textThe research is aimed at the reconstruction of various aspects of the multiform relationship which took place between certain exponents of the Ruiz family –wholesale merchants of fabric– the textiles and the clothes, in the effervescent context of the heart of the Hapsburg Empire during the last third of the 16th century, in Medina del Campo (the town of the fairs) and Valladolid (the capital of the area), through the study of the familiar archive. The relationship between the Ruiz family (textile wholesalers) and the combination of fabric and cloth was analysed in a large context and through various scales of observation: firstly with the "family of merchants" (integrating the bibliography with inedited documents), and subsequently with a series of researches projected towards the "family of clients" – both in the long run as well as in precisely isolated moments, between single biographies and the everyday life , from business transactions and the shopping for fabric and clothes, and finally comparing the "Ruiz network" and other 25 families. The first chapter briefly presents the ample state of the art, the sources and the methodology (accounts, inventories, testaments, “diverse”, mainly gathered with a database); the second the Kingdom of Castilla in the 1500s (economy and society) and the figure of the wealthy merchant; the third the story of the Ruiz family (the two central generations, Simon and the Hospital General of Medina he founded.Chapter 4 deals with the textiles and the fabrics, examining certain wholesale transactions and other retail transactions (in which we can appreciate the multiple agency of the Ruiz family), and deeply analyses over 275 occurrences of fabric found in the documents. After chapter 5, which contains a bibliographic approximation of the fashion of the 1500s and the clothing worn at that time (about 30 examples of articles of clothing), chapter 6 presents the relationship between the Ruiz family, the tailor and the clothing, the "alternative" modalities for the acquisition of clothes, and certain examples of the acquisition of head coverings, gloves, trousers and shoes. Chapter 7 focuses on the comparison of the inventories of the Ruiz family with those of other Castilian families in the second half of the 16 th century. The "material wealth" of 33 subjects is examined, and the macrocategories in which the patrimony studied has been subdivided are defined ("knightly appearance", "worn appearance", "domestic appearance", "domestic work", "sources of appearance", "books") for over 13.500 entries, corresponding to over 33.000 items. Finally, the clothing is examined in further detail (over 3.100 entries corresponding to almost 5.000 items, the second macrocategory after the "domestic appearance").It was possible to imagine a wardrobe which was common to the totality of the subjects analysed, with the most recurring items and the clothes which were most diffused. The Ruiz family and the Presa family were amongst the major owners not only of clothes in general, but also of single pieces, in absolute and relative term. Not only there emerges the tendency to "vivir noblemente", but also it is noticeable, also for the clothing, an "exceptional noble lifestyle".If it is possible to realize, with an observation conducted "from above" (that is, from the numbers extracted from the inventories), a fashion, some patterns of consumption, and some general shared tendencies, at the same time it is necessary to emphasize how, going through the single items of the concrete documents, that variety is one of the constants (a variety of documents and hands, fabrics –both “families” and “tipologies”–, fashions).More than the changes of forms or clothes, which did take place (and which have been recognized) a spinning variety of fabrics and techniques, of decorations and ornaments.Summarizing in one phrase the trajectory of the subjects, fabrics and clothing: the Ruiz, a family of wool merchants dressed in silk.
