Les considérations stratégiques du choix des qualités sous des hypothèses alternatives, quant à la nature du coût fixe ainsi qu’en présence de firmes à plusieurs produits, sont aussi examinées.

Abstract:

RésuméCette note signale pour la première fois l'existence de structures cylindriques verticales dans un dépôt quaternaire, en Espagne. Les deux structures observées se trouvent dans un dépôt limonosableux dans une vallée près de la frontière entre la Galice et la Castille-León, au NO de la péninsule ibérique. La structure principale mesure plus de 225 cm de hauteur, 15 cm de largeur à la base, 20-25 cm à la partie centrale et une quarantaine de centimètres au sommet. Le tiers inférieur est essentiellement sableux et caractérisé par des couches circulaires. La section centrale comprend deux cônes superposés et partiellement emboîtés, remplis de petit gravier sableux, alors que le tiers supérieur de la structure verticale, qui pénètre dans un dépôt de rudites, est essentiellement grossier. Les deux structures cylindriques verticales sont attribuées à des sources ascendantes créées par la pression hydrologique dans le dépôt glacio-lacustre lors de la mise en place de la nappe alluviale d'origine fluvio-glaciaire. Les structures sont vraisemblablement contemporaines de la formation de la nappe alluviale.

RésuméCet article s'attache à donner des fondements théoriques à la structure verticale des réseaux de distribution des drogues illicites, en faisant appel à l'analyse des relations verticales et en intégrant le caractère illégal de cette activité. Il analyse ensuite la manière dont les autorités, par l'intermédiaire des coûts de répression qu'elles imposent aux vendeurs de drogues, peuvent mettre en œuvre dans le cadre d'un équilibre décentralisé l'optimum social. Nous montrons qu'un réseau verticalement séparé, structure optimale de premier rang, très couramment observée sur ce marché, ne peut jamais être mis en œuvre.

Résumé Cette contribution se situe dans la tradition du comparatisme indo-européen de Georges Dumézil. On essaye de rapprocher Romulus, fondateur mythique de Rome, et Bhîshma, grand-père classificatoire des héros guerriers du Mahâbhârata (épopée sanskrite). Tous deux sont associés aux dieux dans la ligne du *Dyeus indo-européen, et tous deux se trouvent engagés dans des séries pentadiques. Dans un sens « vertical », Romulus ouvre la liste des rois de Rome, tandis que Bhîshma ouvre la liste des maréchaux Kaurava. Dans un sens « horizontal », leur vie à tous deux se déroule en cinq phases, et si Romulus a cinq associés, Bhîshma a quatre frères. L’analyse de ces séries met en évidence un schéma pentadique – expansion du schéma trifonctionel de Dumézil. L’entrecroisement des séries verticale et horizontale forme une structure complexe, dans le prolongement d’une tradition indo-européenne très ancienne.

Deux grands ensembles socioculturels de gestion traditionnelle du pouvoir, au Bénin, couvrent différentes réalités participatives selon que les décisions se prennent dans une société hiérarchisée à structure verticale ou dans une société acéphale à structure horizontale. À l’intérieur de ces structures et en fonction des aires culturelles, les dispositifs participatifs peuvent aller des plus simples et démocratiques aux plus complexes et très réservés à une clientèle particulière. On distingue leDaŋnoude Sètrah, lesHon-Togbassa,TokplékpléetTogbéssod’Abomey, l’Atunşede Kétou et l’Aruzumade Nikki. Ces dispositifs visent l’amélioration de l’efficacité de la gouvernance par l’association du citoyen à la prise de décision et par l’acquisition de l’onction populaire à l’action publique. Dans ces sociétés à gestion communautaire du type de celles rencontrées au Bénin, la participation rythme la vie, et les décisions prises sont en général largement partagées, quoique des mécanismes institutionnalisés soient en place pour assurer que chaque membre de la communauté se retrouve dans les décisions qui engagent l’ensemble des populations.

Abstract:

Le travail que nous présentons est une étude numérique de la circulation d’air par convection naturelle dans une enceinte rectangulaire en présence de gradient de température et une source de chaleur interne. Les parois, verticale de droite et celle du haut, sont maintenues à des températures constantes Tc et Tf respectivement (Tc > Tf) et les autres parois adiabatiques. Les équations gouvernantes sont résolues par la méthode des volumes finis en adoptant l'algorithme Simple. Les paramètres principaux considérés sont le nombre de Rayleigh externe RaE, qui représente l'effet dû au chauffage différentiel entre la paroi vertical de droite et celle du haut, et le nombre de Rayleigh interne RaI représentant la force de génération de la source de chaleur interne. Ainsi, que le rapport de forme lié à la géométrie de l’enceinte (Ar). Différents cas de simulations ont été réalisés en fonction de RaE=103, 107, en présence ou non de la source de chaleur interne (cas 1- RaI = 105 et cas 2- RaI = 0), et 03 cas de valeurs de Ar = 0.25, 1 et 2. L’analyse des résultats obtenus a montré les effets sur la structure des écoulements, le champ de température et le transfert de chaleur.

Résumé L’article passe en revue les différentes approches développées au Canada et au Québec pour analyser empiriquement la structure sociale et la mobilité sociale de 1960 à 2000. Deux cadres conceptuels principaux ont inspiré ces travaux : les approches en termes de statut et les approches en termes de classes. La sociologie canadienne apporte plusieurs contributions spécifiques : l’élaboration de mesures originales, l’étude du lien entre caractéristiques individuelles et société globale, le concept de mobilité collective d’une minorité, la thèse de la mosaïque verticale. L’étude de la place des femmes et celle des groupements linguistiques et ethniques ont occupé une place importante. Au tournant du siècle, la contribution canadienne a été marquante pour l’étude de la polarisation sociale, un aspect nouveau dans le champ de la stratification, sans oublier les effets de génération.

Abstract:

Le travail présenté dans cet article est relatif à l’étude et la réalisation d’un dispositif de correction automatique d’angle d’inclinaison des modules photovoltaïques, ayant comme objectif l’augmentation du gain en énergie électrique par rapport au système fixe. Un banc d’essai représentant une installation photovoltaïque a été réalisé au niveau du site de Ghardaïa. Il comprend des modules photovoltaïques de type ‘IS 130S/24’ qui emploi la technologie monocristalline. Le dispositif a été fixé sur une structure mécanique réalisée à base de vérin à courant continu avec un circuit de commande permettant ainsi la rotation automatique des modules photovoltaïque selon la direction verticale. L’intégration d’un système de correction d’angle a été assurée à travers l’implémentation d’algorithme de contrôle grâce à l’emploi d’un microcontrôleur 16F877A et une horloge à temps réel DS1302. Les résultats collectés sont très satisfaisants.

Abstract:

Dans cet article, nous présentons des travaux mettant en évidence les capacités de traitement biologique des eaux résiduaires urbaines au sein des milieux poreux de textures différentes. Une étude comparative du développement de la biomasse couplé aux mécanismes généraux de transferts gazeux à travers deux réacteurs biologiques est menée. Des lits d’infiltration percolation sont simulés par des colonnes garnies de sables d’origine et de structures différentes. Ils sont alimentés périodiquement via un automate de commande avec un influent d’une charge de 525 mgDCO/l et de 54 mgNK/l. Les résultats obtenus établissent le fait qu’un développement équilibré de la biomasse incluant les phases de croissance et de régression est intrinsèquement lié à la nature physique du matériau support. A l’aide des carottes prélevées sur les massifs filtrants et des sondes d’oxymétrie introduites à différentes hauteurs des lits d’infiltration, nous montrons que la répartition verticale du biofilm dans les colonnes ainsi que l’oxygénation des milieux poreux lors des périodes de repos sont également corrélées à la structure des supports pourtant de diamètres moyens similaires. L’efficacité de traitement biologique du carbone est supérieure pour un sable d’origine alluvionnaire comparativement à un sable concassé ; la tendance s’inversant significativement lorsqu’il s’agit de la diminution de l’azote.

L’argomentazione è una pratica complessa e, allo stesso tempo, cruciale per il nostro agire (sociale) quotidiano: saper argomentare rientra, infatti, tra i principali obiettivi da raggiungere alla fine del percorso scolastico. A tal fine, diventa imprescindibile la realizzazione di un curricolo verticale che preveda un iter graduale di avvicinamento all’atto argomentativo (e ai suoi processi costitutivi) e che, dalla scuola primaria, in una prospettiva di continuità organica e sistematica, accompagni il discente fino all’esame finale del secondo ciclo. Considerando la dimensione testuale (e la pratica di interazione con la multiformità dei testi argomentativi) il filo conduttore dell’intero percorso, dopo aver illustrato i principi e i modelli teorici utili alla definizione della struttura argomentativa e dei dispositivi linguistici su cui si regge, con questo lavoro si prova ad avanzare una serie di proposte didattiche concrete da poter sviluppare anche in aula. Designing “vertical” paths on argumentation, between descriptive models and teaching proposals Argumentation is a complex practice and, at the same time, crucial for our (social) daily interaction: being able to argue is one of the main objectives to reach at the end of the school career. To this end, it becomes essential to create a vertical curriculum that provides a gradual approach to the act of argumentation (and its constituent processes) and that, from elementary school, in a perspective of organic and systematic continuity, accompanies the learner until the final exam of the second cycle. Considering the textual dimension (and the practice of interaction with the multiformity of argumentative texts) as the guiding thread of the entire course, after illustrating the principles and theoretical models useful for the definition of the argumentative structure and the linguistic devices on which it is based, this paper attempts to suggest a series of concrete didactic proposals that can also be developed in the classroom.

RÉSUMÉOn fait ici la description de grandes structures sédimentaires du lit, soit des dunes graveleuses, que l'on trouve dans un site situé entre les drumiins du champ de drumiins de Trenton. Ces formes asymétriques et regroupées, qui font jusqu'à 10 m de haut, renferment d'importantes stratifications entrecroisées. Les dunes graveleuses occupent des conduits sous-glaciaires et sont souvent associées aux eskers. La structure interne des dunes laisse voir des surfaces de réactivation comme celles qui ont été décrites pour les structures sédimentaires en milieux éolien, marin et fluviatile. Les lits frontaux distincts et granoclassés sont caractérisés par une diminution verticale de la taille des matériaux grossiers, accompagnée soit d'une augmentation de la taille des particules de la matrice, soit d'une diminution du volume matriciel. Ces relations s'expliquent par le tri longitudinal de la charge de fond et le dépôt des particules en suspension dans la zone de division du courant formée du côté abrité de la dune. Les sédiments plus fins, surtout du sable, se trouvent en aval des dunes. Des matériaux provenant de la charge de fond et du transport des particules en suspension sont accumulés dans les lits en avant des dunes et ce, en fonction de la position par rapport à l'emplacement du point de raccordement du vortex de séparation. On croit que les dunes ont été formées dans des conduits sous-glaciaires sous des courants d'une profondeur de plusieurs dizaines de mètres.

La représentation sur une scène de la violence filiale remonte au théâtre grec, qui met en scène le meurtre de Clytemnestre dans l’Orestied’Eschyle. Comme la trilogie d’Eschyle, diverses pièces québécoises créées dans les années 1980 et 1990 mettent en scène le meurtre symbolique de la mère (Vie et mort du roi boiteuxde Jean-Pierre Ronfard,Soirée bénéfice pour tous ceux qui ne seront pas là en l’an deux millede Michel Marc Bouchard), ce qui, d’un point de vue anthropologique, pourrait être envisagé comme marquant le passage d’une filiation matrilinéaire (Les belles-soeurs) à une filiation patrilinéaire. Cet article cherchera à montrer qu’à la différence du traitement mythologique de la violence, l’évolution de la violence dans la scène familiale québécoise ne saurait se réduire à l’opposition matrilinéaire/patrilinéaire, car, dès les années 1990, la structure verticale parents-fils cède peu à peu la place à une cellule horizontale qui renverse le pouvoir des parents. Comment les atteintes à l’ordre familial fictif se traduisent-elles sur les plans sociopolitique et esthétique?

Abstract:

La présente étude a été réalisée dans les forêts classées de Kimbrila et de Kanhasso au Nord-Ouest de la Côte d’Ivoire. Dans le cadre de cette étude, il s’agit d’établir une connaissance de la flore et la structure de la végétation de cette partie du septentrion de la Côte d’Ivoire. Pour ce faire, des inventaires de surface et itinérants ont été réalisés à travers les deux formations végétales. La richesse, la diversité et l’équitabilité des ligneux ont été évaluées. La structure de la végétation a été par ailleurs étudiée à travers la densité des ligneux, la surface terrière, la structure diamétrique et la structure verticale. Les résultats établissent un total de 127 et 104 espèces ont été recensées respectivement dans les forêts classées de Kimbrila et de Kanhasso. Les familles botaniques les plus représentées sont les Fabaceae et les Euphorbiaceae. Les valeurs des indices de Shannon indiquent une diversité moyenne des forêts classées de Kimbrila ((2,50 ± 0,10) et de Kanhasso (2,16 ± 0,90). La structure horizontale des tiges indique que la plupart des plantes ligneuses ont un diamètre inférieur à 60 cm. Toutefois, sur les 7 classes de diamètres considérées, les tiges de diamètre supérieur ou égal à 60 cm sont les plus nombreuses et représentent plus de 20 % des tiges comptabilisées. La densité des tiges est de 557,60 individus/ha à Kanhasso et 523,92 individus/ha à Kimbrila. La surface terrière des tiges, qui est de 11,653 m2/ha à Kanhasso et 12,488 m2/ha à Kimbrila, est contrastée par rapport à la densité. La végétation de ces forêts classées est structurée en 4 strates dont la composante arbustive est la plus dominante. Les sites d’étude sont bien évidemment des végétations de savane. This work was achieved in the Kimbrila and Kanhasso classified forests in North-West Côte d’Ivoire. The main objective of this study is to contribute to a better knowledge of the flora and structural these two classified forests in North-West Côte d’Ivoire. A botanical study based on plots and itinerant inventory conducted in these two forests. The richness, diversity and woody equitability were determined. The vegetation structure was study following the woody density, basal area, diameter class and the vertical structure. The results showed that there were 127 and 104 species recorded in the Kimbrila and Kanhasso classified forests respectively. Fabaceae and Euphorbiaceae were the most dominant families. In these two classified forests, the diversity high with a value of 2.50 ± 0.10 (Kimbrila classified forest) and 2.16 ± 0.90 (Kanhasso classified forest) corresponding to an average indice. The horizontal structure showed than more species richness found in all sample plots in the two classified forest types was present in the smallest diameter class (< 60 cm DBH). Species richness was classified into seven diameter (DBH) classes, while more than 20 % was recorded in the largest diameter class (> 60 cm DBH). The total number of trees per hectare (n/ha) of the Kanhasso and Kimbrila classified forests were 557.60 and 523.92. The basal area (11.653 m2/ha) of the Kanhasso classified forest was higher than that (12.488 m2/ha) of the Kimbrila classified forest. These classified forests vegetation were strutured in four states and domined by the woody species shrub. The study area were the savannah vegetation.

Abstract: The structures having discontinuity like distribution of mass, stiffness and geometry of the structure are termed as Irregular structures. Irregular structures contribute a large portion of urban infrastructure. The past earthquakes have shown catastrophic effect on the buildings with irregularities. It was seen that the buildings with irregularities are more prone to earthquake then the regular building. In the present study a special case of vertical mass irregularity are discussed. Six different models including three basic cases of buildings models i.e. vertically regular structure, vertically irregular structure and vertically irregular structure with shear wall at different position are taken for analysis by Response spectrum. It has observed that, the torsion, base reaction, displacement and modal load participation ratio in structure. This study exhibits effect of mass variation aspect of RCC structure

RÉSUMÉ Cet article décrit les résultats d'expériences menées en canal réduit sur la morphologie du lit autour d'un obstacle sphérique (diamètre: 7,2 cm) à demi-enfoui dans un lit de sable non cohésif (D50:0.56 mm). La profondeur des écoulements varie de 0,45 cm à 1,4 cm, la vitesse moyenne de 25 cm s-1 à 45 cm s^1 et le nombre de Froude de 0,8 à 1,6. La morphologie typique comprend une zone d'affouillement formant un croissant en amont et sur les côtés de l'obstacle et une zone d'accumulation plus ou moins complexe en aval de l'obstacle. La profondeur maximale du surcreusement est variable, mais décroît brusquement lorsque la vitesse critique de mise en mouvement des grains du lit est dépassée. La complexité de la structure sédimentaire s'explique par la différenciation et l'expansion latérale et verticale des vortex qui se sont formés autour de l'obstacle. À petite vitesse, les structures sédimentaires en aval de l'obstacle sont multiples et forment un angle obtus entre elles. Cet arrangement est conditionné par la position relative de la vague, des vortex et des zones de vitesse réduite de part et d'autre de l'obstacle, en plus de celle située directement en aval de l'obstacle. La zone de vitesse réduite est exploitée par un vortex secondaire qui se détache du vortex en "fer-à-cheval" et contourne l'obstacle. Le vortex secondaire est caractérisé par une vitesse élevée par rapport au fluide environnant; il en résulte une cannelure surplombée par deux zones d'accumulation. Cette forme est conservée jusqu'à ce que le vortex réintègre l'écoulement principal. Lorsque la vitesse augmente, l'angle de la vague frontale se resserre autour de l'obstacle et restreint la propagation latérale du vortex secondaire; la morphologie qui en résulte est un surcreusement en forme de croissant et une mince zone d'accumulation en aval de l'obstacle. Ces observations démontrent qu'il existe une relation spécifique aux écoulements en couche mince entre la structure sédimentaire et les paramètres hydrauliques de l'écoulement.

La structure industrielle classiquement reconnue comme caractérisant le Japon repose sur l’image de la pyramide ; c’est-à-dire sur une forme organisationnelle de réseaux d’approvisionnements/fournitures de type hiérarchie verticale. Au sommet de chaque pyramide, se trouve une très grande entreprise, évoluant à l’échelle mondiale, tandis que la base est formée de nombreuses PMI ou travailleurs à domicile, les niveaux intermédiaires entre ces deux extrêmes étant constitués d’entreprises de plus en plus petites et de plus en plus dépendantes du niveau supérieur... Appartenance à un «groupe», forte dépendance, mais aussi transfert de compétences et assistance sont donc les traits caractéristiques de ce système. Les tensions commerciales croissantes avec les pays occidentaux, notamment les États-Unis, et surtout la forte flambée du yen en 1985 ont provoqué une accélération de l’internationalisation des entreprises japonaises qui ne peut rester, au moins à terme, sans effets sur les sous-traitants du Japon. Après une description du système de sous-traitance japonais, l’article analyse des évolutions stratégiques actuelles : la délocalisation à l’étranger des grands donneurs d’ordres et l’importation de pièces étrangères par les entreprises japonaises au Japon. C’est de ses évolutions qu’apparaît, en conclusion, l’esquisse des relations d’approvisionnement de demain.

Le présent article discute de quelques formules reportées dans la partie B de la norme CEN/TR 1295-3, concernant le calcul de la résistance mécanique des canalisations enterrées sous diverses conditions de charge, selon le modèle de Gerbault. Les expressions du moment, de l'effort normal, de la déformation et de la contrainte sont examinées, et pour elles, quelques adaptations sont proposées, visant à corriger certaines incohérences contenues dans la norme. En ce qui concerne le moment de flexion dû à la pression horizontale, il ressort de la formule CEN/TR 1295-3 qu'il est constant le long du périmètre du tuyau. Ceci constitue une absurdité physique. En résolvant la structure (en utilisant les formules d'un arc semi-circulaire fixe), un facteur de correction est défini pour être introduit dans le CEN/TR 1295-3 afin que le phénomène physique puisse être correctement représenté. Par conséquent, pour la déformation en flexion, qui dépend du moment fléchissant, la même correction s'impose. Pour la pression verticale, les expressions de la norme relatives aux efforts normaux en clé et à l'appui ne sont pas cohérentes avec le modèle de base. À travers l'équilibre du moment de toutes les actions par rapport à la clé, les formules cohérentes sont obtenues. Enfin, l'article met l'accent sur diverses incohérences concernant les canalisations sous pression, en particulier dans la définition des pressions dans différents paragraphes de la norme.

Metal interconnects with a vertical wavy structure have been studied to realize high-density and low-electric-resistance stretchable interconnects. This study proposed a new method for fabricating vertical wavy structured metal interconnects that comprises the pre-stretch method and the micro-corrugation process. The pre-stretch method is a conventional method in which a metal film is placed on a pre-stretched substrate, and a vertical wavy structure is formed using the return force of the substrate. The micro-corrugation process is a recent method in which a metal foil is bent vertically and continuously using micro-gears. In the proposed method, the pitch of the vertical wavy structured interconnect fabricated using the micro-corrugation process is significantly narrowed using the restoring force of the pre-stretched substrate, with stretchability improvement of up to 165%, which is significantly higher than that of conventional vertical wavy structured metal interconnects. The electrical resistance of the fabricated interconnect was low (120–160 mΩ) and stable (±2 mΩ or less) until breakage by strain. In addition, the fabricated interconnect exhibits durability of more than 6500 times in a 30% strain cycle test.

Abstract:

Vertical seismic performance is an important issue for the seismic design of large-scale engineering structures. The structure, which is relatively flexible and unrestricted vertically, may resonate and its response is obviously magnified under vertical earthquake excitations. The main objective of this study is to investigate the earthquake-resistance performance of a quayside container crane under vertical seismic excitations. To this end, a geometric-scaled model of 1:50 was firstly constructed according to the similitude law. Then using this model, a hammering modal test and a series of shaking table tests were successively conducted to obtain the dynamic characteristics and vertical seismic responses. Furthermore, the experimental results were compared with the computed results of prototype obtained from numerical analysis and agreed fairly well. From dynamic response results, it is found that the large-scale structure has relatively high vertical earthquake-resistance capacity and could satisfy the seismic design requirement. The findings reported in this paper are expected to provide some valuable information for studying other similar structures in the future.

The project employs Response Spectrum Analysis (RSA) to assess a vertically irregular reinforced concrete (RC) building. The investigation encompasses the modelling of both a regular and an H-shaped plan irregular building, excluding the ground floor, resulting in a G+7 storey structure. The seismic response of the framed building under consideration during simulated earthquake motions is influenced by the distribution of stiffness, strength, and mass in both horizontal and vertical planes. The primary objective of this research is to conduct a study of the structure's stiffness by examining Regular Structure and Plan Irregular Structure, each with different vertical irregularities. The entire set of building frames is modeled and analysed using Staad.Pro V8i software, and various seismic responses such as base shear, frequency, and node displacement are obtained.

This work studies the horizontal and uplift pressure distributions over a caisson founded on porous materials, and their dependence on the stone diameter and the height of the foundation. For this, tests at a wave flume with an idealized composite breakwater of rectangular section, varying the depth of the foundation of the caisson and the diameter of the stones, were carried on. Eight resistive gauges and eight pressures sensors were used to measure free surface elevations and horizontal and uplift pressure variation, respectively. Results show that: 1) there exist a “saturation” of the reflection coefficient for B/L>0.4, being B the width of the dike and L the wave length, 2) by using the total wave height measured at the toe of the dike in the analysis, the dispersion of the results is significantly reduced; 3) dimensionless run-up and pressures obtained using total wave height mainly depends on the reflection regime and on the relative height of the foundation; 4) maximum uplift and horizontal forces are not always in phase, and three regimes are identified depending on which force dominates; and 5) the relation between the dimensionless forces with the total wave height at the toe of the dike depends mainly on the reflection regime and on the relative foundation height.

Crest modifications such as a storm wall, parapet or a bullnose are widely used to reduce the wave overtopping over coastal structures where spatial and visual demands restrict the crest heights, especially in urban areas. Although reduction factors of these modifications have been studied for sloped structures in EurOtop Manual (2016), there is limited information regarding the vertical structures. This paper presents the experimental set-up and first results of wave overtopping tests for a vertical wall with several different super structure types: a) seaward storm wall, b) sloping promenade, c) landward storm wall, d) stilling wave basin (SWB), e) seaward storm wall with parapet, f) landward storm wall on the horizontal promenade with parapet, g) landward storm wall with parapet, h) stilling wave basin (SWB) with parapet, under breaking wave conditions. The SWB is made up of a seaward storm wall (may be a double shifted rows) , a sloping promenade (basin) and a landward storm wall. The seaward storm wall is partially permeable to allow the evacuation of the water in the basin.

Results from wave impact tests are used to analyze the pressure distribution on a vertical structure with an overhanging horizontal cantilever slab. The structure faces two individual impacts, occurring sequentially on the vertical and horizontal parts. An expression is being proposed for the location of maximum pressures p_max (z_max) on the vertical part as a function of the wave steepness (H⁄L_0 ). The boundary conditions for occurring of high dynamic pressures are determined both on the vertical and horizontal part. Three different pressure distribution cases are proposed as SBW, BW and BWSAT according to the breaker type. For each breaker type, the local pressure ratio’s p_h3⁄p_h1 , p_h1⁄p_v1 , and p_h2⁄p_v1 are analyzed, where p_h1, p_h2 and p_h3 are the local peak pressure at the SWL and top and bottom of the vertical part respectively, whereas, p_v1 is the local peak pressure on the horizontal part. Recommended profiles are calculated from local p_max values.

This paper treats new large scale measurements of pressure fields on a vertical wall under wave impacts. These measurements were done in collaboration with the Joint Industry Project Sloshel, aimed at sloshing in LNG tanks. Measurements are presented with a relatively high spatial and temporal resolution. The impacts are created by wave focussing at the wall. By changing the focal point with respect to the wall, the impact type was altered. The influence of the impact type on the pressures and forces on the wall at large scale is thus studied.

Abstract:

Past tsunami events have caused extreme damage in coastal regions. Examples are the Indian Ocean Tsunami in 2004 and the Tohuku Tsunami in 2011. These extreme natural disasters brought into light the devastating nature which tsunami-induced inundation might inflict when propagating on-land. As a result of eye-witness reports and extensive media coverage, a wealth of evidence showing multi-phase fluid motion entraining a solid phase consisting of entrained debris, ranging from sediment grains to large vessels became available. In this context, debris impacts have been linked to major infrastructural damage (Yeh et al. 2012). This observation resulted in increased research emphasis on tsunami-driven debris impact. It also initiated the inclusion of first debris impact force equations in existing building codes such as FEMA (P-646 2012) and ASCE (Standard 7-16 Chapter 6). There are however still a lot of uncertainties on factors influencing tsunami-driven debris impact. Besides the random, probabilistic nature of debris entrainment, advection by the entraining flow and the uncertainty related to impact points, no guidance exists as to how multiple impacts of debris can be accounted for. In addition, little focus was directed to impact forces on non-rigid structures which investigated here for the first time.

Two-dimensional (2D) CsPbBr3 have received great interest in flexible photoelectric devices due to their excellent carrier mobility and tunable optical bandgap. However, it is unknown if the piezo-phototronic effects of a vertically structured 2D CsPbBr3 photodetector affect its photoelectric performance. Herein, we fabricated a vertical structure device based on 2D CsPbBr3 by using conductive atomic force microscopy and then probed its photoelectric performances under different forces. The photocurrent and on/off ratio under 450 nm laser illumination rise by up to 2.1 and 5.3 times, respectively, when the applied force is 30 nN as compared with that under 10 nN. To investigate the mechanism underlying the enhancement of photoelectric performance, piezoelectric force microscopy measurement and density functional theory calculation were used to estimate the vertical piezoelectric coefficient of 2D CsPbBr3, which were found to be 7.3 pm/V and 3.8 pm/V, respectively. The enhancement of performances can be attributed to the piezo-phototronic effect of 2D CsPbBr3, which increases the separation of photogenerated holes at the interface. These findings propose a comprehensive strategy for enhancing photoelectric performance through piezo-phototronic effects in piezoelectric-based photoelectric devices with vertical structures.

Experiments are performed on the flow past a sphere moving vertically at constant speeds in a salt-stratified fluid. Shadowgraph method and fluorescent dye are used for the flow visualization, and particle image velocimetry is used for the velocity measurement in the vertical plane. Vertical ‘jets’ or columnar structures are observed in the shadowgraph for all the Froude numbers Fr(0.2 ≲ Fr ≲ 70) investigated, and the wake structures in the whole parameter space of Fr and the Reynolds number Re(30 ≲ Re ≲ 4000) are classified into seven types, five of which are newly found. Those include two types of thin jets, one of which is short with its top disturbed by internal waves to have a peculiar ‘bell-shaped’ structure, while the other has an indefinitely long length. There are two other new types of jet with periodically generated ‘knots’, one of which is straight, while the other has a spiral structure. A simply meandering jet has also been found. These wake structures are significantly different from those in homogeneous fluids except under very weak stratification, showing that the stratification effects on vertical motion are much more significant than those on horizontal motion.

Silicon is a promising material for tissue engineering since it allows to produce micropatterned scaffolding structures resembling biological tissues. Using specific fabrication methods, it is possible to build aligned 3D network-like structures. In the present study, we exploited vertically-aligned silicon micropillar arrays as culture systems for human iPSC-derived cortical progenitors. In particular, our aim was to mimic the radially-oriented cortical radial glia fibres that during embryonic development play key roles in controlling the expansion, radial migration and differentiation of cortical progenitors, which are, in turn, pivotal to the establishment of the correct multilayered cerebral cortex structure. Here we show that silicon vertical micropillar arrays efficiently promote expansion and stemness preservation of human cortical progenitors when compared to standard monolayer growth conditions. Furthermore, the vertically-oriented micropillars allow the radial migration distinctive of cortical progenitors in vivo. These results indicate that vertical silicon micropillar arrays can offer an optimal system for human cortical progenitors’ growth and migration. Furthermore, similar structures present an attractive platform for cortical tissue engineering.

Le paysage urbain est un révélateur de l’organisation d’une société ainsi que des stratégies politiques et sociales qui s’y développent. Kaliningrad n’est à ce titre pas en reste. La ville russe, dont la région éponyme est enclavée au sein de l’Union européenne, a connu de nombreuses ruptures historiques que l’on retrouve dans son aménagement. Königsberg, ville acquise par l’Union soviétique en 1946 après la fin de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, est renommée Kaliningrad et doit modéliser sa nouvelle identité soviétique. Le passé allemand de la ville est effacé des narrations officielles. Véritable trophée de guerre, l’aménagement de la ville structure l’organisation de la vie sociale et célèbre la victoire soviétique par de nombreux monuments. À la fin du XXe siècle, Kaliningrad retrouve Königsberg, la ville allemande dont il ne reste que peu de traces matérielles. L’ouverture historiographique s’accompagne d’un processus de rematérialisation de l’identité allemande dans le paysage urbain, qui devient un nouvel attribut identitaire pour la ville autant qu’une attraction touristique dissonante. Cette période est synonyme d’autonomie importante pour les autorités locales à la suite de la chute de l’URSS, avant d’être interrompue au début des années 2000 par le renforcement de la verticale du pouvoir fédéral et l’affirmation nationale russe dans les espaces urbains à Kaliningrad. Les débats récurrents pour renommer la ville n’aboutiront pas. À travers ces ruptures, la population locale se ménage un espace identitaire propre, sans se distancier pour autant de l’appartenance russe. Un phénomène qu’illustre particulièrement l’appellation locale de la ville actuelle par ses jeunes habitants : « Kenig », forme raccourcie de Königsberg.

Wave reflection at harbor structures negatively affects the navigability of entrance canals and harbor tranquility. In case of rubble-mound structures this phenomenon is relatively limited if compared to vertical-wall structures. However, in case of deep waters, the use of the latter is an obliged choice due to economic reasons. Furthermore, vertical wall structures are also the preferred choice of harbor managers since they permit a better design of the berthing structures and help the effective use of space inside the harbor. Reducing the wave reflection at vertical wall structures is thus an important measure. To date, several approaches have been presented in the literature (see for instance Huang et al., 2011, and references therein). The effectiveness of slotted vertical perforated-walls has been studied since many years (most recently: Neelamani et al., 2017). Such kind of structure is often also adopted as frontal and internal wall of caisson breakwaters embodying one or multiple chambers (most recently: Ciocan et al., 2017). Another alternative, so far proposed, are caissons with internal rubble mound (Altomare, C., & Gironella, X., 2014). The so called Oscillating Water Column (OWC) concept, commonly investigated as wave energy converter (Falcão, 2010), can also represent a viable alternative to absorb the incident energy thus decreasing its reflection. However, the studies that investigate its effectiveness as anti-reflection device are quite limited (Liu and Geng, 2012, He and Huang 2016). This work aims to contribute to the present knowledge on the effectiveness of an OWC, embodied in quay walls or harbor breakwaters, as an alternative to reduce the wave reflection at vertical wall structures.

Abstract:

Composite vertical breakwaters are coastal structures used to defend port basins from waves in intermediate and deep water conditions. In order to safely use the inner side of harbors, it is important to limit wave overtopping. Parapet walls are used for this purpose. To improve the hydraulic efficiency of the parapet wall with a fixed crown wall height, the wall can be shaped giving rise to a recurved overhand toward the sea. Its function is to deflect back the incident waves. Recently, it has been shown that the interaction between non-breaking waves and recurved parapet can induce impulsive pressures due to the confinement of the incident wave crest deflected seaward by the overhanging structure. The new physical phenomenon has been called “Confined-Crest Impact (C-CI)” as shown by Castellino et al. 2018. This physical phenomenon can induce “unexpected” structural failure (Dermentzoglou et al., 2020). More recently, Castellino et al. (2021) extended the Goda’s formulae, which define the maximum pressures along a vertical breakwater, considering the “C-CI” induced by the presence of a recurved parapet. The conducted studies have concerned a vertical breakwater without any berm at the toe of the caisson. The purpose of this research is to extend this last work to a composite vertical breakwater based on a foundation berm.

Abstract:

Physical experiments (at a scale of 1/20) are carried out using a vertical wall with horizontal cantilevering slab. Tests are conducted for a range of values of water depth, wave period and wave height. A parametric analysis of measured forces (Fh and Fv) both on the vertical and horizontal part of the scaled model respectively is conducted. The highest impact pressure and forces are measured in the case of breaking waves with a small air trap. Maximum pressures are measured around SWL and at the corner of the scaled model. The horizontal part of the scaled model is more exposed to impact waves than the vertical part. Fh and Fv are very sensitive for the variation of water depth (hs) and wave height (H) while variation of wave period (T) has a rather limited effect.

Abstract:

Over the last years Navier-Stokes numerical models have been developed to accurately simulate wave interaction with all kinds of coastal structures, focusing on both functionality and stability of coastal structures. Although several models have been used to simulate wave interaction with coastal structures in two dimensions (2DV) there are a vast number of three-dimensional effects that need to be investigated in order to improve the design. In this paper a new model called IH-FOAM has been applied to study a vertical breakwater at prototype scale. As a first attempt of validation, the model has been used to simulate a regular wave train generated with a relative angle with the breakwater inducing three-dimensional wave patterns not only seaward the structure due to reflection but also generating an overtopping discharge variation along the breakwater trunk. Pressure laws and overtopping discharge at three different cross-sections along the structure have been studied. The pressure laws have been compared with classical Goda’s formulation. Although, the numerical model predictions are in accordance with Goda’s calculations, a clear three-dimensional variability of wave-induced pressure has been observed. Moreover, an additional study has been performed calculating pressure laws on the side-wall at the breakwater head. Large three-dimensional effects are detected from the simulations due to the flow separation at that area. Overtopping model predictions have been compared with Overtopping Manual calculations showing very close values along the trunk. However, lower overtopping discharge values are observed at the breakwater head. This paper is a preliminary work to show the range of applicability of a three-dimensional Navier-Stokes model to study wave interaction with a vertical breakwater under the action of an oblique wave train.

Abstract:

There is an urgent need to develop methodologies to upgrade and retrofit existing coastal structures to retain their functionality in the scenario of changing climate. It is noticed that higher wave loads cause structural damage and increase wave overtopping rates, resulting in coastal flooding and inundation. Hard structures like seawalls can be reinforced by constructing a submerged breakwater in tandem with the seawall to adapt to the increased wave action due to climate change. Wave height attenuation, overtopping volume, and wave pressure or forces on structures are the important design parameters to be considered for the design of upgradation methods for coastal structures to withstand future climatic events. There are few works available in the literature focused on this direction. In the present study, we focus on pressure reduction on seawall due to the presence of a submerged breakwater in tandem with the seawall. Numerical simulations were carried out using a CFD-based numerical tool REEF3D to understand the effect of a submerged breakwater on wave pressure reduction on the seawall. The work also includes a validation study where the numerical results based on the present work are compared with the experimental studies from the literature.

Wave return seawalls are structures designed to protect the leeward side from overtopping due to the action of waves. The numerical modelling of breaking waves on fully reflective structures like wave return seawalls are challenging due to the complex fluid dynamics involved, air-water mixture's interaction due to air entrapment and air entrainment and the dominant change in the ambient pressure as an effect of the hydrodynamic flow, which leads to compression and expansion of the air pocket. In this study, the vertical wall with parapet is considered since existing vertical walls are convenient to be retrofitted with such attachments to increase their efficiency in overtopping reduction. Very few numerical studies exist of violent breaking wave impacts on a vertical wall with parapets or curved structures, to the authors' knowledge. In addition, no direct numerical study discusses breaking wave impact on such structures and validated with experimental data.

Abstract:

The vertical structure of ice clouds and vertical air motion (Vair) were investigated using vertically pointing Ka-band cloud radar. The distributions of reflectivity (Z), Doppler velocity (VD), and spectrum width (SW) were analyzed for three ice cloud types, namely, cirrus, anvil, and stratiform clouds. The radar parameters of the cirrus clouds showed narrower distributions than those of the stratiform and anvil clouds. In the vertical structures, the rapid growth of Z and VD occurred in the layer between 8 and 12 km (roughly a layer of −40 °C to −20 °C) for all ice clouds. The prominent feature in the stratiform clouds was an elongated “S” shape in the VD near 7–7.5 km (at approximately −16 °C to −13 °C) due to a significant decrease in an absolute value of VD. The mean terminal fall velocity (Vt) and Vair in the ice clouds were estimated using pre-determined Vt–Z relationships (Vt = aZb) and the observed VD. Although the cirrus clouds demonstrated wide distributions in coefficients a and exponents b depending on cloud heights, they showed a smaller change in Z and Vt values compared to that of the other cloud types. The anvil clouds had a larger exponent than that of the stratiform clouds, indicating that the ice particle density of anvil clouds increases at a faster rate compared with the density of stratiform clouds for the same Z increment. The significant positive Vair appeared at the top of all ice clouds in range up to 0.5 m s−1, and the anvil clouds showed the deepest layer of upward motion. The stratiform and anvil clouds showed a dramatic increase in vertical air motion in the layer of 6–8 km as shown by the rapid decrease of VD. This likely caused increase of supersaturation above. A periodic positive Vair linked with a significant reduction in VD appeared at the height of 7–8 km (approximately −15 °C) dominantly in the stratiform clouds. This layer exhibited a bi-modal power spectrum produced by pre-existing larger ice particles and newly formed numerous smaller ice particles. This result raised a question on the origins of smaller ice particles such as new nucleation due to increased supersaturation by upward motion below or the seeder-feeder effect. In addition, the retrieved Vair with high-resolution data well represented a Kelvin-Helmholtz wave development.
