Abstract:
Nihon buyô, sometimes known as kabuki dance, has captured the imagination of Japanese and international audiences for centuries. The dance combines three traditional categories of Japanese dance movement, mai or lateral movement, odori or vertical, jumping movement, and furi, mimetic or imitational movement. Due to its popularity and its long association with kabuki theatre, Nihon buyô is understood by many to represent a singular, uniquely Japanese form of dance. Yet, the term itself is a turn-of-the-century neologism, invented in reaction to the Western category of dance. This retroactive nomination secured Nihon buyô’s status as a national dance, representative of Japanese aesthetics, culture, and behaviors.

Abstract:
Jumping, climbing and suspensory locomotion are specialized locomotor mechanisms used on land and in the air. Jumping is used for rapid launches from substrates. Climbing and suspensory movements enable locomotion up, under and through vertically-structured habitats, such as forests. Elastic energy storage is particularly important for jumping and catapult systems and we address the core concepts of power amplification that are exemplified in nature’s extreme jumpers. We examine the diverse mechanisms of attachment that characterize animals that can grasp and adhere to a diversity of structures. We conclude the chapter by examining the integration of biological capabilities with engineering innovations in these systems.

Abstract:
Some ambiguous patterns of flashed dots are equally likely to be seen as jumping horizontally or vertically. Priming dots can disambiguate this motion, showing that observers prefer to see straight-line rather than L-shaped motion. Pairs of dots that circle around each other can become perceptually linked into larger, global shapes including many such pairs. Moving backgrounds can distort moving dots so that their circular paths appear elliptical or even linear. Observers radically misperceive the sliding motions of rods (chopsticks) or rings that glide over each other. Finally, a moving background can strongly shift or distort a flashed-up static cross. This chapter discusses these concepts.
