Abstract:
The goal of this chapter is to provide an introduction to the context, the key terms, and some essential verses in the Bhagavad Gītā (BhG), a text that is indispensable to understanding the Hindu traditions of theology and culture, as well as Indian civilization more broadly. The BhG is used widely in core text programs, in introductions to world religion, and with increasing frequency in courses on comparative theology, with the goal to widen the understanding of students of religion and theology in a global context. The BhG can also be discussed as influential on modern American and European thought since it inspired people as diverse as Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, T. S. Eliot, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, and the Wachowski Brothers.

Abstract:
This chapter investigates how and why amateur musicians use social networking sites, employing a mixed-methods approach. Attention is focused on four big Italian Facebook communities of pop-rock musicians: drums, bass, guitar, and keyboard players (overall, 2,101 active users), analyzing the relational and textual data extracted from the web. The chapter analyzes the network structures emerging from the interactions among the users. It also identifies and maps the main areas of discussion (sound shaping, studio recording, marketplace, musical references, computer production, and relations) and the latent semantic dimension characterizing Facebook users’ activities, through social network analysis and lexical correspondence analysis. Meanings, values, aesthetics, and representations of amateur music making, emerging from the data, are framed within two orthogonal dimensions: theory versus praxis, and competence versus music production. The Italian singularity is then explained with respect to this space. Some theoretical conclusions are finally drawn.

Abstract:
A dictionary is the tangible repository of the common stock of words, although dictionaries comprise at best 10% of the full lexicon. Part of the lexicon is made up of the words used to describe what people do and what people are like. The psycholexical approach to personality focuses on this subset of words and on its exploitation, or what can be said to be the glossary of personality. This chapter is concerned with the history of the psycholexical approach to personality description, from ancient history to the more recent efforts, albeit focusing in particular on its modern history. Psycholexical taxonomies from around the world will be considered, as well as taxonomies based on nouns, verbs, adverbs, and their combinations. Ongoing controversies, difficulties, and disputes regarding alternative psycholexical personality structures will be considered, as well as recommendations for future research.

Abstract:
This chapter analyzes data on what workers—interviewed as they returned from jobs in Gulf Cooperation Council countries—paid several years earlier at home to get their jobs. The most important finding is the big difference in cost by corridor. The gap between the highest and lowest cost corridor was 9 to 1, reflecting the average $4,400 paid by Pakistanis returning from Saudia Arabia versus the $500 paid by Filipinos returning from Qatar. Earnings gaps were much smaller, ranging from a low of $350 a month for Ethiopians returning from Saudi Arabia to $600 for Indians returning from Qatar. The fact that costs vary much more than earnings suggests that differing conditions in migrant-sending countries might explain why some workers pay much more than others.

Abstract:
The Age of Affluence. Ike and Mamie. The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit. In the United States, the 1950s have been memorialized as the Pax Americana. A similar stereotypical view has characterized the 1950s crime film. While the big-shot gangster dominated the headlines in the 1930s and the private eye graced the 1940s, both the gangster picture and film noir were declared DOA in the 1950s. There is, of course, another, less than perfect picture of the ’50s in which the tropes associated with the decade are rather darker. Commies. Aliens from outer space. The bomb. I Died a Million Times argues that the crime film is alive and well in the 1950s in the generic guise of gangster noir. The corpus delicti is a trio of subgenres that crystallized in the period and that correlates with the above symptomatic events: the syndicate picture, the rogue cop film, and the heist movie. These subgenres and the issues associated with them--the “combo” as capitalism incarnate, the letter of the law versus the lure of vigilantism, and the heist as a “left-handed form of human endeavor”--may appear black and white in the rearview mirror of history, but from another perspective, one that’s attentive to issues such as race (The Phenix City Story), class (The Prowler), gender (The Big Heat), sexuality (The Big Combo), the nation (The Asphalt Jungle), and the border (Touch of Evil), these signal, not-so-generic films are as vibrant and colorful as the decade itself.

Beg, Mirza Sangin. Introduction to the Persian Manuscript. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199477739.003.0001.

Abstract:
There are four dimensions to the introductory note of Mirza Sangin Beg’s Sair-ul Manazil. He begins the work with Islamic imagery that seemed to be de rigueur in Persian and Urdu texts, wherein he waxes eloquent about the creator and His creation. The creation also includes Prophet Muhammad, his family, and companions. The author intersperses the imagery with relevant verses from the Quran. He informs the reader that he inspected buildings and copied the inscriptions very diligently and had these overseen by a Persian gentleman at the court who had great mastery on the subject. He put together this work in the time of the Mughal Badshah Akbar II, and called it Sair-ul Manazil. Mirza Sangin Beg indulges in applaudable praise of the British, who are compared with some of the greatest exemplars of the world across cultures. In the last segment he acclaims and extols his benefactor, William Fraser, for his patronage of the work and the suitable recompense he received. The sophistry involved here is that in another version of the manuscript the patron is replaced with Charles Theophilus Metcalfe. In two other renditions both the British gentlemen, officers of the English East India Company controlling Delhi, are accommodated seamlessly as patrons.

Abstract:
Contractors are big business and a big part of war, with businesses taking upon themselves many tasks previously designated to the armed forces. By 2007, there were over 100,000 individuals working on U.S. contracts in Iraq and Afghanistan-versus about 160,000 U.S. combat troops. By some estimates, contractors account for some 40 percent of the costs of running operations. This important work examines how that came to be, as well as answering a number of critical questions: How have Congress, public interest groups, and other parties dealt with the issue? How is the marketplace affecting the American way of war? What impact will this have on force structure? How will the growing involvement of the private sector influence such matters as the all-volunteer force and the procurement and maintenance of advanced warfighting systems? The emergent role of contractors on the battlefield reflects a deeply significant transition in the nature of armed conflict, a significant rebalancing between the roles of the private and public sectors. This change is the most significant upheaval in the nature of warfare since the rise of the nation-state in the 17th century. It represents a transformation started long before the invasion of Iraq and, absent a dramatic change in the evolution of the global marketplace, it will continue to increase, regardless of the course of American domestic politics. Government will have to change to keep up. Understanding why the private sector has come to play such a prominent role in public wars requires tracing a story as torturous and, at times, mysterious as the search for the Holy Grail, a tale filled with deceit, greed, courage, selflessness, stupidity, misdirection, and myth. It includes following a winding path from Medieval Tuscan hills, to England, to colonial America, to the sands of Iwo Jima and of Iraq, the mountains of Afghanistan, the corridors of Wall Street, and the halls of the Pentagon. It demands walking through the cross sections of military, political, social, cultural, economic, intellectual, and business history. At the end of the journey lies the unvarnished truth about contractors in combat. That is the story Private Sector, Public Wars means to tell.
