Abstract:
Art can be messy. Teaching art can be messy. Teaching can be a messy process. The art of making a space for the playfulness and messiness of teaching requires courage and letting go. This article develops the verandah metaphor for re-thinking the place of the arts in education, in order to make space for some of the institutionalised ambivalence in arts education. Four sites of practice are examined, where contingencies come into play, and where current practices act to both enable and constrain our ways of working with young children. The article concludes with some new (messy) possibilities for seeing and thinking about arts education.

Abstract:
This paper focuses on a collection of objects deliberately concealed beneath the verandah of a ward for middle-class, female, paying patients at Australia’s longest continuously operating mental health institution, the Royal Derwent Hospital in Tasmania. Cached in small discrete mounds across an area of some 50 square metres, the collection was probably concealed in the mid-20th century and contains over 1000 items of clothing, ephemera and other objects dating from 1880 to the mid-1940s. In achieving a possessional territory of such magnitude, this patient achieved a level of personal self-expression that is rarely encountered archaeologically, particularly within an institutional context. Analysis of this collection as an ‘underlife’ illuminates both functional aspects of the hospital and the hopes and desires of this particular, though still anonymous, patient and her vibrant world of things.

Abstract:
Symmetricity is part of the Javanese Cosmology that describes the perfection of Javanese. Symmetricity has been the main principle in Javanese house, not only in the faade of the house but olso the hierarchy of spatial inside. Kampung Bubutan is the ancient settlement experienced two phases of Government which strongly influenced the architectural character, which at the time became the Kingdom of Mataram (15th century) and the colonialism of the Netherlands (17th century up to the 19th century). The remains of the era of colonialism in Surabaya can still be felt by many colonial buildings surounding in the settlement. This study will explore how the principles of Javanese symmetricity in Kampung Bubutan colonial house, by using descriptive qualitative methods. Can the Javanese symmetricity still become principal in colonial house and survive? The results shows that the symmetricity of fasade became decreased at the last peroide of 19th century, when the NA-Romantiek was popular. Spatial symmetricity at the colonial houses have inconsistancy since the beginning of 19th century until the early 20th century. The main hierarchy of the spatial Javanese House, which are pendopo (verandah), pringgitan (foyer), dalem (living room) and senthong (bedroom), have become inconsistence since the end of 19th century periode

Abstract:
AbstractThis article examines the significance of ‘place’ as a theme in ecclesiology in the interests of developing an ecclesial sense of place within my own context of Australian Anglicanism. To talk about ecclesiology is to talk about place, about God’s place, about our placement in the world, about how and why our social life operates as it does, about what engenders optimal life enhancing community. From this perspective, place can be a critical concept through which theology, ecclesiology, mission and ministry can be organized and better understood. The primary discipline that has deployed the concept of place is geography. Accordingly, in this article, I consider the theme of place as it is discussed in professional geography and briefly examine some implications for being church and the Anglican Church in particular. This provides the framework for consideration of place within an Australian cultural and ecclesial context. In doing so, I examine the motif of verandah as a depiction of ecclesial place down-under. The key concept of the ‘in-between place’ to depict a post-colonial way of being church is deployed in order to recover an ecclesial sense of place down-under. Underpinning such an approach is the theological concept of the in-between God.

Abstract:
This work, proposes a Hierarchical Modelling (HM) for the indoor and outdoor Residential Radon Data (RRD). Indoor RRD and outdoor RRD are seen as distinct «¤??hierarchies«¤?? of carcinogenic radioactive radon and both hierarchies constitute the least exposure that can be experienced by an individual. Works on this issue have always been based on complicated models, even for single instances of both indoor and outdoor residential radon. Our proposed method can be used to analyse effectively the many-to-many (it, however, becomes numerically clumsy if more than 5-to-5 instances are considered) instances of residential radon, although we have illustrated, here, using a three-to-three situation. Our preference of this method is based on its simplicity, and probable higher precision, as compared with the complexity involved in other methods on the same issue. The data used for the illustration of our models were taken from the indoors (i.e. living-room, bedroom and the kitchen) and the rest outdoors (i.e. verandah, car-park and the well-water shed) of a residential building in a lightly populated estate (i.e. Asero housing estate). Observations were taken on a daily basis throughout the dry season covering ninety days (i.e. January, February and March), this constitutes our season I (i.e. dry). The same was repeated in the season II (i.e. wet) which was taken at the beginning of June through July and August.ª¤?ª¤?ª¤?ª¤?ª¤?ª¤?ª¤?ª¤?

Abstract:
The heat solar energy traditionally is used in greenhouses for ensuring optimal plant vegetation regime in our climatic conditions. Glass verandas built during last centuries at the south side of living houses and summer cottages are appreciated as original use of solar energy. Veranda as light and warm room was used for different household needs and also for social activities. Up-to-date materials and technologies proposes wide spectrum of innovative activities for greenhouses and conservatories. The variable amount of solar energy is possible to smooth out by using accumulation system. In the paper results from vegetable drying experiments are presented. In the research used products – carrots, dry matter of the product at the start 8.5%, chopped product – 9.9%, after desiccation – equilibrium moisture content 10 -11%. The experimental device placed in the room is simulating the processes, which would occur if we use greenhouse for product drying, accordingly making changes in the design of conventional greenhouses by separating drying section from growing section, supplying warm heated in the greenhouse upper layer air from the bottom by forcing it with axial ventilator, and accordingly choosing appropriate accumulation system for energy storage in case when outside air temperature drop occurs.

Abstract:
What is tropicalia? It's a garden that looks tropical. Hawaiian landscape architect Richard C. Tongg explained in 1960, ‘developing gardens on the theme of “tropicalia”, [means] making gardens in the tropics look the part, instead of being pale copies of other styles’. So what makes a garden look tropical? Earlier in the 1930s, Richard Tongg with garden writer Loraine E. Kuck provided the first clues to defining tropical garden character – three essential characteristics. I have argued there are other telltales from my research into early Queensland garden history. A summary of the qualities that distinguish tropical garden or landscape character is offered here: • a lush jungle-like density of planting (‘massed, crowded effects’);• ‘the selection of large-leaved plants’ (macrophyll-type leaves typical in rainforests);• ‘the enveloping growth of great-leaved creepers scrambling up tree trunks’;• components of the ‘Exotic Aspect’ (especially tropical-flavour plants and materials with visually striking (unusual) forms, and the use of bold, bright colours) including: ‐ certain iconic tropical species such as palms, bamboo, tropical fig trees, epiphytes (staghorn ferns, orchids, bird's nest ferns, etc.), and rainforest vines (lianes);‐ combining traditionally ecologically disparate species (e.g. pines and palms);‐ plant types that provide masses of colourful flowers and/or foliage (e.g. poinciana, jacaranda, acalypha, croton, etc.);‐ bold colour combinations (e.g. orange, hot pink and bluey-purple as in the flower of Bird of Paradise (Strelitzia reginae);‐ typical tropical shade gardening practices such as verandah, bush-house and fernery gardening; and,• possible components of the ‘Bizarre Aspect’ as found in Queensland, included garden ornaments such as rustic constructions using giant clamshells and/or coral-stone, whalebones as giant arches, and found objects (especially seaside flotsam/jetsam, such as glass buoys).

Abstract:
‘Dear Mrs. Ford,’ the correspondence often begins, then follow accounts of misfortune and privation:During the floods our home was an inch out of the water and the river four miles wide. We lost heavily in cotton but the stock are alright, though they were standing in water 3 ft. deep for a day and … 8 pigs lived on the verandah for two days. The drought was so bad that water was scarce and baths unknown. We had to do what we could with a wet sponge. But I missed vegetables most of all. Fruit one learns to do without, but the memory of vegetables used to torture me.We certainly had a terrible experience in the cyclone. [We] lost everything but our house. The sea rose 20 feet over high tide mark and swept through our little home, destroying everything and drowning my poultry. I took the children on to a high piece of ground and put them in the flanges of a large stump while I tried to rescue my poultry. My husband stayed at the house tying down the roof. It's easy for a bloke to be pleasant at the factory … but pretty hard when he is pulling old Strawberry out of a bog or chasing the pigs out of the sweet potato patch. And calves! Have you ever heard the raucous, nerve-splitting, bellowing of an army of desperate little demons, who begin to scream at daylight and keep it up all through the hot day?I'm afraid I've been a bit depressed because you see we mortgaged the place to feed our dairy herd and the little drop of rain last month killed most of those left. One might wonder what floods, drought and hungry calves have to do with books and reading in the Queensland outback. The connection becomes apparent through an examination of the records of the Queensland Bush Book Club, a Brisbane-based philanthropic organisation that operated a book- and magazine-lending service for families living in the Queensland bush in the early twentieth century. Mrs Ford served as the group's corresponding secretary for many years, and letters detailing the hardships of life in the remote countryside ended up on her desk.

Abstract:
The way in which breeding families of laboratory-born marmosets used the space provided by their cages, and a small protruding 'veranda', was assessed in order to determine the popularity of the veranda as a form of environmental enrichment, and the extent to which the marmosets confined themselves to only part of the cage. The veranda was found to be of enduring interest to the marmosets whose occupancy of this space was an order of magnitude greater than the rest of the cage. The upper part of the cage was preferred to the bottom half. This preference was greater in larger cages and decreased when larger cages were temporarily reduced in size. It is unlikely, however, that the distribution of the occupancy of different parts of the cage resulted primarily from a fear of people in the holding room. The veranda, which was the most preferred place in the cage, was the nearest part of the cage to people in the room. Occupancy of the lower part of the cage increased when human observers sat on the floor, suggesting that some of the marmosets' behaviour comprised approaching, rather than avoiding, the observers, possibly for reasons of curiosity and social interaction.

The sheep were divided into 15 equal groups A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K, L, M, N and O. Administration of three different doses of powdered Bironja 3,6 & 9 ml /kg body wt to the group A, B, C, D and E, Turmeric at the dose rate of 2,4 & 6 ml /kg body wt to the groups F, G, H, I and J, Veranda leaves 2, 4 and 6 ml /kg body wt to the groups K, L, M, N and O showed 15-52% , 11-15% and 4-8% efficacy, respectively against trematodes in sheep. Administration of Nilzan 30 mg/kg body wt orally was highly effective 73-89% against all the species of trematodes in sheep. Among medicinal plants Bironja was found to be most effective followed by turmeric. Veranda leaves were found to be totally ineffective against trematodiasis in sheep.Res. Agric., Livest. Abstract:
I returned to the United States in 1988 in order to get a graduate education in the social sciences. Three years in rural Kasulu, Tanzania, had taught me that how western social science framed development problems was inadequate. I had some hopes that good social science could address how relief and development workers viewed the African society that surrounded them. To me the close relationships that should exist between the two seemed obvious. I had seen enough PhD. students and consultants to know that their Swahili skills and bush savvy were lacking. But I had also seen enough savvy field workers whose inability to generalize beyond their own project, or systematically frame a problem within a broader context meant that their knowledge would never contribute to a broader understanding of anything outside their small corner of the world.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTThe article addresses a number of different themes related to Australian Anglicanism. Underlying this inquiry is a deeper concern to trace the contours of an ecclesiology that is both embedded in a particular context (Australia) and through that points to common ideals that inform the self-understanding of the wider Communion. After an introduction, the remainder of the article is divided into four sections. The first section involves a brief historical perspective to introduce Australian Anglicanism to a wider audience. A second section attends to matters of law and governance; familiar enough but often dry territory, though certainly revealing as to the present state of our Church. From history and law I offer in the third section a reflection of a geographical kind on the idea of place as a formative factor in ecclesiology. In this way I hope to be able to highlight some of the particular challenges for Australian Anglicans and hopefully the wider Communion.

Abstract:
In the 1970s politics in Tanzania was substantially a bureaucratic affair. Since the 1980s, however, economic liberalisation, multiparty democracy and governance reforms have on the one hand introduced measures conducive to building a legal-rational bureaucracy and a liberal civil society, and on the other accelerated political struggle for economic resources through personalised regional networks. Paraphrasing Emmanuel Terray, the first trend is described in this article as the manufacture of ‘air-conditioned’ politics, the second as the growth of ‘veranda’ politics. The article argues that donor reforms are not leading in a straight line to liberal governance, but neither is civil society simply being colonised by patrimonial networks. Rather, both ‘air-conditioned’ politics and ‘veranda’ politics are advancing simultaneously, inundating a previously bureaucratised political sphere. The dual character of this ‘re-politicisation’ makes the fate of governance reforms exceedingly difficult to predict.

Abstract:
This study sketches light on the implementation of sharia law in Aceh which does not explicitly oblige the Christians to wear jilbab (headscarf). However, in reality some Christian women perforce in wearing headscarf in public. Unlike many other studies which highlighted on the implementation of sharia law, this study pinpoints the attitude of Acehnese Christian women’s negotiation as the minority who live under the sharia law. The participative observation is implemented in Langsa, Aceh which is supported by using deep interview to Christian housewifes, teachers and students. This study examines life context politically, socially and religiously which encourages them in wearing headscarf and their experience in negotiating their identity as Acehnese Christian women. This study is based on habitus’s theory of Pierre Bourdie, Subaltern theory and in-between theory of Bhaba to explain the negotiation effort of Christian women in the Veranda of Mecca. This study reveals that the decision upon wearing headscarf has been a long and bitter process which involves social and personal pressure from Muslims and Christians. Furthermore, the implementation of sharia law in Aceh has created a hybrid culture among Christian women: as form of in-between, being Christian and the Veranda of Mecca community.
