Abstract:
When an image shows an individual and a mirror, observers tend to describe the scene by saying that the individual is looking at his or her own refection in the mirror, even when the layout makes this impossible. The name comes from the many examples of paintings of Venus with a mirror, but the effect is not specific to pictures or to women. In addition to difficulties understanding what is visible in a mirror from different viewpoints, observers also struggle to appreciate information such as size of images on transparent surfaces, either mirror or windows. These illusions and difficulties stem from the nature of a visual system tuned to distal information and from the need to discard accidental information from changing perspectives.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses the format and venue of Security Council meetings. The Charter holds that the Security Council should be organized so that a meeting could be convened at any time. This was partly because meetings were the format for action-taking by the Council of the League of Nations, and this was expected to be the case for the UN Security Council at the time the Charter was drafted. In addition, it was decided that the Council must hold periodic meetings at which each of its members may be represented, and that the meetings may be held at venues other than the seat of the Council, should the venue chosen prove useful in facilitating the Council's work.

Abstract:
This chapter evaluates the merits of Sao Paulo as a venue for international arbitration proceedings. It discusses the history and development of arbitration in Brazil; the processes and rules involved as well as the role of courts in the conduct of arbitration proceedings; and rules for arbitral awards. IT concludes that Sao Paulo's status as Brazil's leading center for business and financial transactions makes it the perfect breeding ground for arbitration. From the creation of the first arbitration center in 1979, to the consolidation of an ‘arbitration culture’ by the relentless work of the local arbitration community, Sao Paulo remains Brazil's preferred venue for arbitral proceedings. The decisions by the local courts represent the most compelling evidence that Sao Paulo is comparable to other major international arbitration venues.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the role of jazz presenters in connecting artists and audiences in the here and now of improvised performances. It first provides an overview of the business of live jazz performances that take place in concert halls and clubs and in less formal performance spaces, along with the challenges faced by presenters running their venues as for-profit businesses. It then analyzes the attitudes and activities of venue operators and concert producers in the context of their professional endeavors and particularly in their interactions with musicians and fans. It also considers the presenters' relationship with jazz musicians and audiences and shows that they are part of the unseen scene whose role in providing a place and time is vital to collective expressions of music.

Abstract:
This chapter evaluates the merits of Switzerland as a venue for international arbitration proceedings. It discusses the history and development of arbitration in Switzerland; the processes and rules involved as well as the role of courts in the conduct of arbitration proceedings; and rules for arbitral awards. Switzerland is one of the preferred venues for international arbitration due to its neutrality, central location in Europe, multi-lingual and multi-cultural environment, established infrastructure, experienced bar with a long tradition of comparative law, prominent scholars who contribute to the development of international arbitration theory and practice, and the dynamic Swiss Arbitration Association (ASA). Given this thriving environment and its combined tradition and history of arbitration, Switzerland will continue to foster and contribute to the development of international arbitration as the preferred means of dispute resolution in commercial matters.

Abstract:
The author takes us to visit Saturn’s moon Titan, and Venus, Mars, and to the unconfirmed planet GJ581d. Although we find unearthly conditions on these bodies’ surfaces today, things were different in the past. Even now, there are oceans deep below Titan’s frozen ice shell that itself sees liquid methane rains and vast ethane-filled lakes. Venus and Mars both had liquid water long ago, while Venus may even have been comfortably warm and humid before modern complex life developed on Earth. Many potentially habitable exoplanets are likely locked in their rotation to always face their star with the same side, causing incredible differences between their day and night sides. This chapter reviews how oceans and atmospheres are lost by the Sun’s magnetism or protected by that of the planets’, how masses of carbon dioxide can be stored in solid limestone, and how habitable zones shift to and from planets.

Abstract:
This chapter evaluates the merits of Hong Kong as a venue for international arbitration proceedings. Hong Kong is a Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China (PRC). British rule ended in 1997, with the PRC assuming sovereignty under the ‘one country, two systems’ principle. Hong Kong has long been one of the leading arbitral seats in Asia. Its prominence as a leading arbitral seat is due in large part to the establishment of the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre (HKIAC) in 1985 and adoption in 1990 of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) Model Law on International Commercial Arbitration. Arbitration law and practice has remained unaffected by the handover to the PRC. Today Hong Kong continues to be widely regarded as one of the leading arbitral venues in Asia, particularly for China-related disputes. In addition, Hong Kong is also increasingly seen as one of the leading international arbitration seats worldwide.

Abstract:
Venous sampling is critically important in the diagnosis and localization of pituitary, parathyroid, renal, adrenal, and ovarian endocrine tumors and conditions. Catheterization of smaller veins can present a challenge and may be responsible for technical failures, particularly with adrenal vein, parathyroid, and inferior petrosal sinus venous sampling. Beyond the inherent challenges of catheterization posed by small veins, obtaining adequate blood samples can be difficult because the return of blood from a small vein may be exceedingly slow. This chapter discusses techniques to enhance the return of venous blood flow from a diagnostic catheter in a small vein. These techniques are applicable to all venous sampling, but they are particularly beneficial when sampling small-caliber veins.

Abstract:
Central venous pressure (CVP) is at the crucial intersection of the force returning blood to the heart and the force produced by cardiac function, which drives the blood back to the systemic circulation. The normal range of CVP is small so that before using it one must ensure proper measurement, specifically the reference level. A useful approach to hypotension is to first determine if arterial pressure is low because of a decrease in vascular resistance or a decrease in cardiac output. This is done by either measuring cardiac output or making a clinical assessment blood flow. If the cardiac output is decreased, next determine whether this is because of a cardiac pump problem or a return problem. It is at this stage that the CVP is most helpful for these options can be separated by considering the actual CVP or even better, how it changed with the change in cardiac output. A high CVP is indicative of a primary pump problem, and a low CVP and return problem. Understanding the factors that determine CVP magnitude, mechanisms that produce the components of the CVP wave form and changes in CVP with respiratory efforts can also provide useful clinical information. In many patients, CVP can be estimated on physical exam.

Abstract:
Despite being almost ubiquitous within the critically- ill population, vascular access remains a frequent cause of iatrogenic injury, manifested as both procedural complications and later events, such as infection and thrombosis. Untoward events are minimized by expert tuition and meticulous practical technique. Consensus guidelines on training in vascular access are discussed. Vascular access, particularly central catheterization, should not be undertaken lightly. Can a patient be managed without vascular access or can the number of vascular access devices be rationalized? Other routes for drug and fluid administration exist, particularly enterally during the recovery phase. This chapter covers vascular access during critical illness and discusses the development of more advanced techniques.

Boyd, Barbara Weiden. Homer’s Gods in Rome. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190680046.003.0010.

Abstract:
Chapter 9 follows Venus, Mars, and Vulcan to Rome and examines Ovid’s reception of these Homeric divinities as the divine ancestors of the Roman people. Ovid’s internalization of Homeric repetition is complemented by distinctively Roman variations on the theme; the chapter therefore closes with a consideration of several other instances of Homeric resonance in Ovid that cluster around these gods. Two episodes in Fasti Book 3 are the focus, as Ovid figures Mars as an elegiac lover, whose repetitious desires reflect both his Homeric origins and his generative role in Roman tradition: the rape of Silvia, an instance of revisionist mythmaking in action; and the would-be seduction of Minerva, thwarted by the subversive Anna Perenna. Venus, meanwhile, although now transformed as genetrix, remains ever mindful of her Homeric wound (uulnus).

Abstract:
The intertextuality of John Rolland’s Court of Venus, announced in its opening quotation and subsequent displays of scholarship and poetic skill, is central to the poet-narrator’s self-construction as a man improved by studying literature. However, the extent of Rolland’s reading is obscured by his unacknowledged use of key sources, including dictionaries, to populate his poem with Classical figures and cultivate a learned diction. While this might be read as pretension to a literary elite Rolland associates with the bygone court of David Lyndsay, the moral vision of his poem is greatly enlarged by its attempt to align such bookish learning with knowledge gained through experience—foregrounded by allusion to Chaucer’s Wife of Bath. In this way The Court of Venus models an urbane, knowing morality working towards wisdom and self-governance while recognizing the diversity, and disruptive desire, of human nature.
