Michael, Moser, and Bao Chiann. 9 Conduct of the Arbitration (Articles 13–22, 25–26, 30–31). Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/law/9780198712251.003.0009.

Abstract:
This chapter addresses a number of key procedural steps and principles in an HKIAC arbitration. It begins with a discussion of the general principles governing the conduct of proceedings, followed by rules concerning the seat and venue of the arbitration and the language of the arbitration. The chapter then analyses the filing of and amendment to the parties’ written submissions. Next, the chapter discusses the arbitral tribunal’s authority to rule on its own jurisdiction as well as HKIAC’s prima facie power to proceed with an arbitration. The remainder of the chapter covers evidentiary matters and hearings, experts appointed by the arbitral tribunal, non-participation of a party in the arbitral proceedings, closure of the proceedings, and the waiver of a party’s right to object.

Gerber, Jane S. Cities of Splendour in the Shaping of Sephardi History. Liverpool University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.3828/liverpool/9781904113300.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Sephardi identity has meant different things at different times, but has always entailed a connection with Spain, from which the Jews were expelled in 1492. While Sephardi Jews have lived in numerous cities and towns throughout history, certain cities had a greater impact on the shaping of their culture. This book focuses on those that may be considered most important, from Cordoba in the tenth century to Toledo, Venice, Safed, Istanbul, Salonica, and Amsterdam at the dawn of the seventeenth century. Each served as a venue in which a particular dimension of Sephardi Jewry either took shape or was expressed in especially intense form. Significantly, these cities were mostly heterogeneous in their population and culture — half of them under Christian rule and half under Muslim rule — and this too shaped the Sephardi worldview and attitude. While Sephardim cultivated a distinctive identity, they felt at home in the cultures of their adopted lands. The book demonstrates that Sephardi history and culture have always been multifaceted. The book's interdisciplinary approach captures the many contexts in which the life of the Jews from Iberia unfolded, without either romanticizing the past or diluting its reality.

Abstract:
This chapter’s examination of the registers of the Comédie-Italienne provides more detailed context to Goldoni’s career at the Hôtel de Bourgogne by focusing specifically on the status of the author in this theatre. A detailed account of the payments made to the opéra-comique authors working alongside Goldoni illustrates his particular value to the troupe. This data modifies the straightforward vision of the Comédie-Italienne as a lucrative commercial venue; however, a consideration of relative timescales for payment also suggests that although payments there were often low, the theatre’s accessibility with respect to the Comédie-Française could nonetheless still make it attractive. Goldoni’s employment by the Italian troupe is posited as not only an attempt to address increasingly pressing economic concerns, as recent re-evaluations suggest, but also as part of a move by the theatre’s administration to re-enter an older logic of prestige and historical status.

Michael J, Moser, and Choong John. 8 Hong Kong. Oxford University Press, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/law/9780199655717.003.0009.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter evaluates the merits of Hong Kong as a venue for international arbitration proceedings. Hong Kong is a Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China (PRC). British rule ended in 1997, with the PRC assuming sovereignty under the ‘one country, two systems’ principle. Hong Kong has long been one of the leading arbitral seats in Asia. Its prominence as a leading arbitral seat is due in large part to the establishment of the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre (HKIAC) in 1985 and adoption in 1990 of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) Model Law on International Commercial Arbitration. Arbitration law and practice has remained unaffected by the handover to the PRC. Today Hong Kong continues to be widely regarded as one of the leading arbitral venues in Asia, particularly for China-related disputes. In addition, Hong Kong is also increasingly seen as one of the leading international arbitration seats worldwide.

Abstract:
Oxford Studies in Ancient Philosophy provides, twice each year, a collection of the best current work in the field of ancient philosophy. Each volume features original essays that contribute to an understanding of a wide range of themes and problems in all periods of ancient Greek and Roman philosophy, from the beginnings to the threshold of the middle ages. From its first volume in 1983, OSAP has been a highly influential venue for work in the field, and has often featured essays of substantial length as well as critical essays on books of distinctive importance. Volume LIX contains an examination of: Aristotle’s reception of Empedocles’ ideas about harmonia and love in developing his own conception of the soul; Plato’s portrayal of the disembodied soul and how it can be the subject of bodily desires; how the philosopher rulers in Plato’s Republic are motivated to rule through bonds of philia to their fellow citizens; how Aristotle, while denying that there are magnitudes that are actually infinite, allows that there are infinitely many things; Aristotle’s distinction between the many senses of being in MetaphysicsΔ‎. 7 and the relation between existence and predication; and the explanation of Carneades’ reasons for not writing philosophical works in Philodemus’ Index Academicorum (PHerc. 1021).

Oxford Studies in Ancient Philosophy volume LVII (Winter 2019) Oxford Studies in Ancient Philosophy provides, twice each year, a collection of the best current work in the field of ancient philosophy. Each volume features original essays that contribute to an understanding of a wide range of themes and problems in all periods of ancient Greek and Roman philosophy, from its beginnings to the middle ages. From its first volume in 1983, OSAP has been a highly influential venue for work in the field, and has often featured essays of substantial length as well as critical essays on books of distinctive importance. Volume LVII contains studies of: the relation between professional skill (technē) and rule (archē) in the refutation of Thrasymachus in Plato’s Republic; the central role of beauty in moral development in Plato’s Phaedrus; the ‘Digression’ in Plato’s Theaetetus and the normative implications of objective measurement; Plato’s response to the Eleatics in his Parmenides and the development of the idea that the Forms must participate in each other; the last definition of ‘sophist’ in Plato’s Sophist, which is shown to be a genuine expertise; the conception of character virtue in Aristotle’s Eudemian Ethics and how it contributes to the correctness of decisions in the virtuous person; the nature of practical reasoning and practical intellect in Aristotle’s ethics; Aristotle’s notion of ‘practical truth’; Aristotle’s conception of vice; Epicurus’ hedonism as psychological, but not ethical; ancient Cynicism as a philosophical ‘way of life’; and Jacob Burckhardt’s complex relation to ancient Greek philosophy and its place in Greek cultural history.

Sivarasu, Sudesh. Medical Devices Innovation for Africa: enabling industrialisation. University of Cape Town Libraries, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.15641/uctlib40.

Full text
Abstract:
It is with great pleasure to recognise all our partners in the merSETA Viro-Vent Innovation Skills Challenge who contributed to this publication: University of Cape Town, Cape Peninsula University of Technology, University KwaZulu Natal, University of Witwatersrand and National Technologies Implementation Platform. Thank you, Professor Sivarasu, for your leadership of the University of Cape Town for supporting these efforts to find new forms of collaboration that focus on “Skills for localisation” and “Skills for re-industrialisation”. This publication comes at a time when South Africa and the world are still recovering from the devastating effects of the covid-19 pandemic complicated by an emerging war in Ukraine. This is expected to continue disrupting social and economic activities, including education, training, and work. The merSETA and its stakeholders are working tirelessly to ensure that training and other skills development activities continue despite these challenges. This innovation project, among others at the merSETA, utilises existing research and Higher Education Institution (HEI) Infrastructure to stimulate rapid response technology innovation aimed at the development, design and prototype production of a medical device in response not only to the COVID-19 pandemic, but also to an economic sector dominated by imports. To serve the skills development mandate of the merSETA, the project investigates the technology management capabilities or future skills required to accelerate South Africa’s post-covid recovery. The concept of innovation, as vested in this program, is aligned to the merSETA’s strategic intentions, that include: i. Supporting skills for Economic Reconstruction, Recovery and Growth, ii. Supporting skills for the changing world of work, iii. Supporting skills for the growth and sustainability of the green and circular economies and iv. Exploring and supporting the role of the mer-sector in the digital economy, as well as v. Continuing to strengthen the role of the SETA as an intermediary body Making informed sector skills planning decisions is the objective of this program. – that is, to understand those future jobs that would drive the localisation of components in a model that could stimulate expanded manufacturing opportunities through relevant skills supply. The merSETA’s Viro-Vent Innovation Skills Challenge anticipates a contribution towards closing the skills gap through a job generation model. The merSETA remains committed and is looking forward to engaging on how this initiative sees a pipeline of new product innovations expanding the manufacturing sector. We owe it to the citizens of South Africa to find innovative ways of harnessing our young talent into industrial expansion.

MacDonald, Juliette. Naked Craft Network. University of Edinburgh, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.2218/ed.9781836450207.

Full text
Abstract:
The Naked Craft Network (NCN) was a multi-component, international collaborative research project (2014–2017) that investigated topical issues in contemporary craft practice in Scotland and Canada. Through an innovative combination of practice and theoretical reflection, bridging design history and theory, practice-based research and public engagement, the project brought together an international network of practice- based researchers, writers, curators and industry partners. They questioned the value of craft as a practice, an historical phenomenon and a contemporary experience. The main outputs from the project were a cluster of interlinking research events, including residencies, workshops, a public education programme and accompanying symposia. The research was disseminated to the public through a touring exhibition of Canadian and Scottish craft that was accompanied by a catalogue with commissioned essays. Led by craft historian and theorist Juliette MacDonald and Dr Sandra Alfoldy, Nova Scotia College of Art & Design, Canada, NCN was the first major craft partnership between Scotland and Canada and involved four academics, 23 professional craftspeople, five curators, and three research assistants. The Make workshop and symposia brought together individual makers from local craft communities, and researchers from academic institutions from Canada and Scotland. 20 June – 6 September 2015 Art Gallery of Burlington, Burlington, Canada. 26 September – 28 November 2015 Centre Materia, Quebec City, Canada. 14 January – 10 April 2016 Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, Halifax, Canada. April – May 2016 Thurso Gallery and Iona Gallery, Kingussie, Scotland. Both galleries at once with one month in each, but it was counted as one exhibition venue. June – August 2016 Barony Centre Craft Town, West Kilbride, Scotland. October 2016 – February 2017 Peebles Art Gallery, Peebles, Scotland. April – June 2017 An Lanntair, Stornaway, Orkney, Scotland. The legacy of the research lies in the way it has opened up channels of communication between the two communities to establish a space for reflecting upon and re-evaluating the traditional roles of craft practice for the future.
