Abstract:
SummaryNative chicken lines in South Africa are associated primarily with rural households. A programme was established only as recently as 1994 to conserve the different lines found in South Africa. As no scientific data was available on the production traits of these lines, a research trial was conducted to describe them phenotypically in terms of their growth, carcass traits and egg production. Four different native lines, the Koekoek, Naked Neck, Lebowa-Venda and Ovambo chicken were included in the study. Significant differences were observed among the lines, which means that the lines could be described as different native lines in terms of their phenotypic traits. The Ovambo chicken had the best growth performance, while the Koekoek showed the highest performance for egg production. Although production is poor in comparison with commercial lines, the contribution of these birds to household food security and application in low-input systems should be recognized and further investigated.

Abstract:
Egg yolk is a common constituent of semen extender and protects sperm against cold shock. Besides its protective characteristic, chicken egg yolk is mostly included in extenders for semen preservation due to its abundant availability. The aim of the study was to compare egg yolk sources from different indigenous chicken egg yolk sources and storage temperatures on short-term preservation of South African indigenous goat semen. Semen was collected from 8 South African indigenous goats with artificial vagina during the breeding season (autumn). From each of the 8 goats, 6 replicates were done. Semen samples were randomly allocated into 4 treatment groups of Tris-based extenders containing 20% of egg yolk from White Leghorn as a control, Ovambo, Potchefstroom Koekoek, and Venda chicken breeds. The extended semen samples were stored at 5 or 25°C for 48 h. Semen samples were evaluated for sperm motility using computer-aided sperm analysis sperm viability and morphology with fluorescence microscope at 0, 3, 24, and 48 h. Data was analysed with ANOVA using Stata® version 12 (StataCorp, College Station, TX, USA) statistical software to test the differences between the treatments. The total, progressive, and rapid sperm motility rates were higher in freshly collected semen (90.6, 42.7, and 33.0%, respectively) compared with treatment groups. Semen extended with Tris without egg yolk had higher total sperm motility rate at both 5°C (48.1; 51.1%) and 25°C (43.3; 53.3%) temperatures for 48 h. Semen extended with egg yolk from different egg yolk sources had no sperm motility from 24 h when stored at 25°C. Semen extended with Tris without egg yolk (48.1%) had higher sperm motility than Ovambo, Potchefstroom Koekoek, Venda, and White Leghorn (3.7, 0, 0, and 0.4%, respectively) when stored at 5°C for 48 h. However, sperm motility declined when storage increased. In conclusion, addition of egg yolk had no effect on preserving goat semen. However, Tris-based extender without addition of egg yolk preserved semen for longer period than semen extended with egg yolk regardless of egg yolk origin or chicken breed.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Two experiments were conducted to determine the effect of dietary threonine level on productivity and carcass characteristics of indigenous Venda chickens. In each experiment the diets were isocaloric and isonitrogenous but with different dietary threonine levels. A complete randomized design was used in both experiments, the grower (1-49 days old unsexed Venda chickens) and finisher (50-91 days old female chickens) phases. The grower diets contained 4 (CT4), 5 (CT5), 6 (CT6), 7 (CT7) and 8 (CT8) g of threonine/kg DM, while similar diets were used for the finisher phase but designated (FT4), (FT5), (FT6), (FT7) and (FT8), respectively. A quadratic equation was used to determine threonine levels for optimal productivity. Dietary threonine level had significant effect (P>0.05) on feed intake, growth rate, FCR, live weight, ME intake and N-retention of unsexed and female Venda chickens. Feed intake, growth rate, feed conversion ratio, live weight, metabolisable energy and N-retention of unsexed and female Venda chickens were optimized at different dietary threonine levels. Dietary threonine level had no effect (P>0.05) on pH of crop, proventriculus, gizzard, small intestine, large intestine and caecum contents of female Venda chickens. Dietary threonine requirements for optimal productivity decreased as Venda chickens grew older. Dietary threonine levels for optimal productivity will depend on the particular variable in question. These findings have a lot of implications on ration formulation for slow-growing Venda chickens

Abstract:
A study was conducted to determine the growth performance and carcass characteristics of indigenous Venda chickens fed a grower’s diet supplemented with varying levels of garlic meal. The study was based on four diets containing similar energy but different garlic meal supplementation levels of 0, 10, 15 and 25 g/kg DM. At 50 to 91 days, all the growth and carcass parameters measured were improved (P less than 0.05) by garlic meal supplementation. Feed intake, growth rate, feed conversion ratio, live weight, carcass weight, dressing percent, breast meat, thigh, drumstick, gizzard and fat pad weights of Venda chickens were optimized at different garlic meal supplementation levels of 14.7, 15.8, 8.0, 16.4, 14.2, 12.7, 11.2, 12.7, 8.2, 10.5 and 15.1, respectively. These findings have implications on ration formulation for indigenous Venda chickens. Thus, it was concluded that garlic meal supplementation improved feed intake, growth rate, live weight and carcass weight of Venda chickens.

Abstract:
Two experiments were conducted to determine diet crude fibre (CF) levels for optimal productivity of slow-growing indigenous Venda chickens. In each experiment the diets were isocaloric and isonitrogenous but with different CF levels of 2, 3, 5, 6 and 8%. A complete randomised design was used in both experiments, the starter (1-49 days) and finisher (50-91 days). A quadratic equation was used to determine CF levels for optimal productivity. Dietary CF levels of 3.4, 4.0 and 3.0 % optimised growth rate, feed conversion ratio (FCR) and live weight of unsexed Venda chickens (starter), respectively; and higher dietary CF levels resulted in lower (P less tha 0.05) intake and digestibility. Dietary CF levels of 6.5, 4.3, 3.2 and 4.4 % optimised feed intake, growth rate, nitrogen retention and live weight of male Venda chickens (finisher), respectively; while higher dietary CF levels resulted in poor (P less tha 0.05) FCR and nutrient digestibility. The results indicate that different CF levels optimised production parameters, and dietary CF levels for optimal productivity increased as chickens grew older.

Abstract:
Histological studies were conducted on the palatine tonsil of six male crossbred goats of six months of age. The tonsils were lined by a stratified squamous non-keratinized surface epithelium which continued into the crypts forming the non-reticular epithelium. At some areas in the crypts, the non-reticular epithelium associated with lymphoid follicles showed a great reduction in height with only one to two intact cell layers and were called reticular epithelium or lymphoepithelium. Propria-submucosa of the palatine tonsil was characterized by dense irregular connective, lymphoid, glandular, adipose and muscular tissues. Lymphoid tissue constituted majority of the palatine tonsil and was organized into primary and secondary lymphoid nodules and dense diffuse lymphatic tissue. Average diameter of lymphoid nodules was 684.17±6.88µm while the lymphocyte count in the nodules was 28826.54±236.25. The average number of lymphatic nodules counted per field under low power magnification of microscope was 2.67±0.42 and the internodular distance was 34.67±1.41. Glandular tissue was present in the deeper areas of propria-submucosa. A well developed connective tissue capsule separated the lymphoid and glandular tissues of the palatine tonsil. In the immunohistochemical staining technique strong positive reaction for cytoplasmic IgG bearing B- lymphocytes was noticed within the germinal centre of lymphoid nodules, towards the base of the FAE and some cells even infiltrated the crypt epithelium. In the mantle zone and internodular area, reaction was very mild indicating that T- lymphocytes predominated in these areas. It was concluded that the palatine tonsils were histologically mature as a local defence mechanism against the harmful substances to be encountered from the environment after birth.
