Augustine invites Christians to maintain a detached attitude towards this world, an invitation which is largely reflected in the Sermones ad populum. This article studies these sermons to highlight the understanding of the relationship of Christians with pagans who are ultimately called to convert. According to this study, it is through preaching that Augustine christianizes pagans without forgetting other means, especially dialogue and knowledge of the practices of peoples not yet educated in the faith.

Abstract:
Velle et al. (2010) discussed discrepancies between Scandinavian Holocene chironomid-inferred temperature estimates, which they attribute to the response of chironomids to environmental variables other than temperature and to taxonomic shortcomings. They suggest ways in which the reliability of chironomid-based paleotemperature reconstructions could be improved by taking into account ecological complexity. While we agree with many of their recommendations, based on the results of other work, we think their paper is unnecessarily pessimistic regarding the ability of existing chironomid-based temperature inference models to provide reliable estimates of past temperature. We offer a critique of the main points discussed by Velle et al. (2010) and provide evidence that chironomid-based temperature inference models can reliably reconstruct mean July air temperature in the Lateglacial and Holocene over millennial and centennial timescales.

Abstract:
This article addresses the issue of the two-level nature of acts of the will, i.e. its ability to voluntarily refer to its own acts. First, we will examine the ancient sources of the concept of the two-level will (Plato and Augustine). Then, we will focus on the views of John Duns Scotus on the types of acts of will, with particular emphasis on the concept of non velle and its application in philosophical and theological issues. Against the backdrop of Scotus’s concept, we will examine the ways in which 14th-century thinkers engaged with his position and developed his account of the two-level acts of will and types of acts of will. Finally, the article discusses a significant change in the function of non velle and the use of this type of volitional act in 14th-century ethics by exploring the views of Buridan and Kilvington. -------------------------- Received: 29/01/2023. Abstract:
Virtual reality (VR) for Language learning has been shown effective in improving students’ communication skills. However very few studies reveal the communication strategies students used in communicating in a VR environment, especially in learning Chinese as a foreign or second language (CFL/CSL). In this pilot study, a prototype Virtual Experiential Language Learning Environment (VELLE) was used to provide immersive learning experiences in developing CFL students’ communication strategies. Productive Failure was employed as an instructional approach to support the learning design. The participants were six CFL students learning in an Australian university. The main data sources included audio recordings of the students’ communication in VR and interview data. The findings showed that participants’ use of various types of communication strategies was influenced by the VELLE and Productive Failure design. In particular, the use of L1 in the problem-solving phase enriched the participants’ learning opportunities and all participants used a lesser number of resource deficit-related strategies after the instruction. Second, Students reported enhanced engagement in language use in the VR context.

AbstractThis contribution aims at reconstructing the system of legal sources as it can be recognised in all its clarity in the De iure praedae. After pointing out that Grotius applied in this work the mathematical method, it is observed that the law has a clear voluntaristic character: 'voluntas universorum ad universos directa lex dicitur'. Even the 'first notion', quoted in Regula I, that is the lex aeterna, has this specific character: 'Quod Deus se velle significarit, id ius est'. Interesting is also the way in which the issue of the ius naturae is developed. Actually, natural law is consistent with Regula I precisely because it is bound to God as a manifestation of his will: 'Dei voluntas non oraculis tantum et extraordinariis significationibus, sed vel maxime ex creantis intentione apparet'. Thus, the creation of the ius gentium primarium and ius gentium secundarium follows the same pattern: it is always a voluntas that splits into a cascade like a 'baroque fountain'. At the end of the same argument we find finally the ius civile: 'Quidquid respublica se velle significavit', as Regula V states. In conclusion, the system of legal sources in De iure praedae is based on premises that differ in many respects from the legal sources of De iure belli ac pacis.

O artigo que se segue pretende analisar a noção schopenhaueriana de liberdade da vontade (entendida como liberum arbitrium indifferentiae), cuja definição, como defendo, pressupõe a distinção agostiniana entre o velle e o posse, assim como a acepção kantiana de caráter inteligível. Considero que a liberdade plena, ou a completa negação da vontade, conforme a perspectiva de Schopenhauer, tem por base a noção agostiniana de libertas, que só é alcançada por meio da graça, e também sua errônea interpretação sobre o conceito agostiniano de liberum arbitrium. O objetivo principal desse artigo consiste em apresentar Agostinho como um precursor fundamental para a teoria de Schopenhauer.

La atención se centra en algunos importantes teólogos escolásticos, desde el siglo XIV hasta la primera mitad del siglo XVII, que rechazaron el principio de que “lo que se quiere siempre se quiere bajo el aspecto de la bondad (sub ratione boni)”. Estos teólogos basan sus teorías en un marco voluntarista. La libertad se concibe como un poder absoluto, casi sin límites, capaz de querer lo que es bueno y también lo que es malo para el mal.

Abstract:
Pretende-se com este artigo, demonstrar como o niilismo é um dos conceitos centrais da obra de Hans Jonas. Para isso, analisaremos como o problema se desdobra em sua obra a partir de três perspectivas complementares: a identificação de um niilismo cósmico, cujo primeira aparição são os movimentos gnósticos da Antiguidade tardia e seus impactos sobre o cristianismo primitivo; um niilismo antropológico derivado dessa posição gnóstica e agravado pela filosofia existencialista; um niilismo ético e tecnológico, que tanto serve para diagnosticar a tecnologia como “vontade de ilimitado poder” quanto para compreender a crise ambiental a partir da crise de valores que marca o Ocidente a partir da modernidade. Com isso, o niilismo, interpretado como velle nihil, ou seja, como vontade de negação e, mais especificamente, de destruição, é uma chave interpretativa para a crise ambiental. Dessa forma, a obra de Jonas pode ser considerada como uma tentativa de evitar que o “mais estranho dos hóspedes” destrua a própria morada.

Empirical data in the form of many chironomid-based temperature reconstructions give an excellent opportunity to assess the chironomid approach to temperature reconstruction by testing its reproducibility. Brooks et al. ( The Holocene 22(12) 2012 (this issue)) offer a critique of points discussed in Velle et al. ( The Holocene 20 (2010) 989–1002), but fail to explain the poor reproducibility found when Holocene chironomid-based temperature reconstructions are compared. We discuss the issues raised by Brooks et al. (2012) and cite studies that demonstrate the complexity involved. We are grateful to Brooks et al. (2012) for contributing to the discussion. However, they overly rely uncritically on transfer functions and the resulting reconstructions as representatives of true patterns in nature. A major source of bias involved when chironomids are used as a palaeoenvironmental proxy is the response to confounding gradients. Many of the challenges discussed in the Forum Article, in the comment, and in the reply are also valid for other research fields within palaeoecology. The challenges should still be properly addressed in chironomid research.

En la presente investigación se sostiene que San Agustín de Hipona filtró sutiles referencias a los epicúreos y a los estoicos en De beata vita (Sobre la vida feliz), sin mencionarlos. Las referencias latentes en este diálogo se hicieron patentes en De Trinitate y en sus sermones sobre San Pablo; esto nos presenta, ahora, la oportunidad de convertir la sutileza en diafanidad. Mediante la interpretación de las concepciones de la felicidad descritas por el filósofo africano en De beata vita se descubrió que subyace en este diálogo una discusión entre epicúreos estoicos y cristianos (división tripartita planteada por el propio San Agustín en sus Sermones) que ilustra las siguientes divergencias: 1) para dichas escuelas helenísticas la serenidad puede hallarse en una disposición interior, mientras que para los cristianos el anhelo de un Bien trascendente es una condición sine qua non para la vida feliz; y, 2) los estoicos y los epicúreos proponen buscar la felicidad limitando los deseos (cupiditas); en cambio, los cristianos exaltan el velle o desiderare del Sumo Bien, es decir, Dios. Sin embargo, no hay que olvidar que también existe una convergencia en la moderación de los deseos (los cristianos moderan cupiditas, sin abandonar el desiderare).

Résumé Tout en redonnant l'avantage au protestantisme sur le catholicisme, la réunification allemande accentue la disjonction entre de larges pans de la société allemande et la religion chrétienne. Cette nou velle donne, loin de ne concerner que le champ religieux, porte en germe une rupture avec une culture politique reposant plus ou moins explicitement sur les valeurs chrétiennes. Accroissant subitement la conscience de la disqualification des Églises et du christianisme dans l'espace social, la réunification met en cause le statut privilégié qui leur est réservé dans l'espace public. Elle pose la question de la légitimité d'un statut qui reconnaît implicitement le christianisme comme l'un des pôles de structuration de l'identité nationale. Elle ouvre sur une redistribution des rapports entre nation et religion et de nouvelles formes de pluralisme. Les récentes controverses à propos de l'avortement, les débats relatifs à la présence de crucifix dans les écoles publiques en Bavière ou suscités par la mise en place dans le Brandebourg d'un enseignement des normes et des valeurs échappant au contrôle des Églises, les polémiques relatives à l'institutionnalisation de l'islam sont autant d'indicateurs des déplacements en cours.

Abstract:
L’objectif de cette étude était de participer à la sauvegarde et à l’amélioration des performances du zébu Azawak au Mali en proposant une estimation des performances de croissance et de reproduction de cette race bovine élevée au nord du pays. Le suivi a concerné 1129 animaux dans quatre communes du cercle de Ménaka, entre novembre 2009 et février 2010. A 30 jours, les mâles pesaient en moyenne 39 ± 10 kg et les femelles 32 ± 4 kg. Aucune différence significative (p > 0,05) n’a été enregistrée entre les poids adultes des taureaux (370 ± 88 kg) et des vaches (327 ± 46 kg). L’âge au premier vêlage a été de 50 ± 11 mois avec un intervalle entre vêlages de 16 ± 4 mois. Les corrélations du poids avec le périmètre thoracique (r = 0,95) et la hauteur au garrot (r = 0,94) ont été les plus élevées. Des équations barymétriques ont été établies pour chaque catégorie animale (veau/velle, génisse/taurillon, vache/taureau) au moyen de régressions polynomiales du poids (y) sur le périmètre thoracique (x). Celles-ci pourront servir à établir une table de conversion du périmètre thoracique en poids vif ou un ruban barymétrique à l’attention des agents de l’élevage, afin de faciliter un suivi zootechnique et sanitaire des animaux sur le terrain.

Abstract:
In the assessment of spoken production, numerous reasons can be identified behind the decisions that raters make in evaluating samples of oral performance. Inter and intra rater factors are relatively well documented in various reliability and validity studies. Some that have been identified in literature involve the effects of examinee pairing or the familiarity with the examinees, others point in the direction of gender and gender role perceptions O’Sullivan (2008), others appear to be connected with body language and non-verbal cues that accompany oral production (cf.: Krahmer and Swerts 2004, Seiter, Weger, Jensen and Kinzer 2010). While some studies that address the assessment of speaking English in exam contexts suggest that raters may not feel as comfortable assessing pronunciation as they do other aspects of a speaker’s performance (Orr 2002, Hubbard, Gilbert and Pidcock 2006, Brown 2006, De Velle 2008), more recent investigations of rater behaviour involving electronic evidence from training, maintenance and online examination programmes tentatively show that pronunciation, in fact, is the first category examiners attend to (Hubbard 2011, Chambers and Ingham 2011, Krakowian 2011, Seed 2012, Tynan 2015, Kang and Ginther 2019). This paper looks at large collection of assessments stored in an electronic system to investigate what raters really seem to pay attention to when allegedly following rating scales.

Abstract:
The lentil (Lens culinaris) sector in Nepal has realized as an export potential commodity but lacks adequate trade related research and development. To study the growth, export performance and trade competitiveness of Nepalese lentil, secondary data pertaining for the period of 30 years (1990–2019 A.D.) were analyzed classifying as pre and post WTO period for Nepal. Compound annual growth rate (CAGR), Cuddy-Delle Velle instability index, export performance ratio, reveled comparative advantage (RCA), trade specialization and Herfindahl-Hirschman index were analyzed. The trend analysis showed highly fluctuation with the growth rate of 40.31 and 42.24 percent per annum has been noticed in import value and quantity respectively. Whereas; the export quantity is found negative growth of 0.43 percent and export value with the growth of 1.44 percent. High instability was found in all parameters of export and import and highest variation was noticed for pre-WTO period in comparison to post-WTO. Nepal enjoys relatively strong competitiveness in export of lentil with RCA value greater than 1. Trade specialization index fluctuated over the years, it remains in the stage of import substitution declining from growth stage and have witnessed positive direction to revive the lentil export performance from Nepal. A Itália e sua língua nacional devem muito ao ato revolucionário de um poeta que se atreveu a romper as barreiras do mundo conhecido e adentrar, em primeira pessoa, nos mistérios da outra vida, aquele “al di là” esperado, desconhecido e temido, partindo da tradição (Virgilio) para chegar à “vida nova”, onde a matéria se faz luz. Em sua jornada, o poeta peregrino passa pelo Inferno, onde antigas criaturas monstruosas e ferozes punem as paixões e as ilusões de soberba, posse, avidez; pelo Purgatório, o mundo do meio que é também meio de libertação das ilusões, reino em que a melancolia se irmana à esperança; ao final dele, o poeta alcança o Paraíso terrestre, pois seu arbítrio já é “libero, dritto e sano” e lhe permite ascender ao Paraíso, o reino em que o “ben dell’intelletto” e a contemplação aliam-se à crescente lucidez, em que a comunhão com o divino se torna real. Ao final de sua busca o “ser com Deus” faz com que o desejo humano seja preenchido de divindade (“ma già volgeva il mio disio e il velle, / sì come rota ch’igualmente è mossa, / l’Amor che move il sole e l’altre stelle”). Ao chegar ao “ponto final”, Dante parece esclarecer as dúvidas e temores dos homens de seu tempo, sigilando finalmente as portas do mundo antigo e suas formas de representação, para nos conduzir ao mundo moderno, ao Humanismo, o tempo em que o indivíduo está em contato com a natureza, com a história e o poeta em diálogo constante com sua obra e seu leitor.

The more spectacular a prediction is, the more frustrating it becomes when the prescribed date passes and nothing happens. This essay will discuss not so much the predictions of yesterday but rather the awakening of the morning after. False predictions left a gap and created the need for explicit or implicit responses to the failed prediction, a need that could be filled by modifying the calculations or condemning fresh speculation. This essay shows how people managed to reconceptualize the order of the world aftera.d.800 =a.m.[annus mundi] 6000, the beginning of the supposed seventh, ultimate millennium. As we consider the intellectual progress of the ninth century, we also need to look at the link between the Carolingian reform and the release of apocalyptic tension or post-apocalyptic exhaustion. This investigation builds on recent contributions to the field of medieval eschatology, especially those of Wolfram Brandes, Richard K. Emmerson, Johannes Fried, Richard Landes, Bernard McGinn, and others. It focuses on selected sources, and particularly on exegetical texts, to show that overcoming the eschatological crisis caused more than a shift in the system of counting years, fromannus munditoab incarnatione Domini.Questions about dates led to general reflections about time, the past and the future. The significant shift, therefore, was from counting time to a philosophy of time.

L’article présente le processus d’une recherche-action, soit le développement d’un outil diagnostique des pratiques de veille stratégique auprès de PME. La présente recherche s’articule autour de la veille stratégique qui peut se définir comme un processus informationnel par lequel une organisation se met à l’écoute de son environnement pour décider et agir dans la poursuite de ses objectifs. La méthodologie de recherche retenue est la recherche-action et, plus particulièrement, le prototypage d’un système expert. L’objectif de la recherche est de sensibiliser les dirigeants d’une organisation aux activités de veille stratégique et ainsi contribuer à les faire progresser. Pour atteindre cet objectif, un outil diagnostique des pratiques de la veille stratégique auprès de petites et moyennes entreprises (PME) est développé. La structure du diagnostic s’attarde à cinq composantes principales, soit les types de veille, le contexte de la veille, l’organisation de la veille, le processus de la veille et la sécurité de l’information. Ces composantes se subdivisent pour former un grand total de 30 composantes. Dans le cadre du développement du prototype, 6 moyennes entreprises canadiennes et 33 experts sont mis à contribution lors des trois itérations menant à la dernière version du prototype. Les six PME ont fait l’objet d’autant d’études de cas.

La propension à l’innovation des membres de l’équipe dirigeante semble être le catalyseur des activités de veille, stimulant et orientant les efforts de veille. Ainsi, la veille est motivée par la recherche d’occasions d’affaires et elle vise principalement l’horizon à long terme. Par ailleurs, les dirigeants gèrent de façon stratégique leurs réseaux d’information, afin d’y puiser les informations nécessaires à l’innovation.

La industria cinematográfica utiliza hallazgos dermatológicos para ayudar a los espectadores a diferenciar entre héroes y villanos. Este estudio buscó determinar si existe una asociación significativa entre la presencia de vello facial y el tipo de carácter. Se analizaron los 10 mejores héroes y villanos masculinos de la lista de los 100 mejores héroes y villanos del American Film Institute para detectar la presencia de vello facial. Se analizaron un total de 20 personajes de 19 películas. El vello facial se definió como el cabello presente en la cara que podía identificarse fácil y claramente como barba, perilla o bigote. Los 10 villanos analizados en este estudio no tenían vello facial en comparación con 5 héroes con esta característica (100 % frente a 50 % respectivamente). El tipo de vello facial observado en los héroes era una combinación de barba y bigote. La prueba Exacta de Fisher reveló una asociación significativa entre la presencia de vello facial y el tipo de carácter (p=0,0325). Según este análisis, parece haber una tendencia a ayudar a los espectadores a distinguir héroes de villanos mediante el uso de características mutables. El uso del vello facial para identificar héroes es notable porque, si bien no es un trastorno dermatológico, investigaciones anteriores han revelado un mayor uso de hallazgos dermatológicos en los antagonistas en comparación con los protagonistas.
