Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Large Woody Debris (LWD) accumulation serves essential ecological functions and benefits society’s coastal ecosystems (e.g., beaches). Thus far, the ecosystem services perspective has paid little attention to LWD. Therefore, we aim to contrast social perceptions on LWD and its ecological significance in Puerto Velero beach, Caribbean, Colombia. In consequence, the contribution of LWD to the conformation and creation of Puerto Velero beach was analyzed, as well as how beachgoers perceive the importance of LWD and if they were willing to pay to remove LWD in this beach. To achieve this, a quantitative convergent approach was then proposed using GIS analysis and remote sensing to understand the contributions of LWD to the Puerto Velero beach ecosystem; and in addition, a survey was performed to determine how beachgoers perceived LWD and how they valued the phenomenon. Results indicate that LWD contributed to beach maintenance; nevertheless, most people neglected LWD values because of its lack of visual attractiveness. As such, ecosystem services targets become conflicted because people positively perceived ecosystem services provided by beaches, but they did not assign importance to the beach dynamics they deemed unattractive, regardless of their vast importance.

Abstract:
Text input is a desired feature for AR glasses. While there already exist various input modalities (e.g., voice, mid-air gesture), the diverse demands required by different input scenarios can hardly be met by the small number of fixed input postures offered by existing solutions. In this paper, we present Handwriting Velcro, a novel text input solution for AR glasses based on flexible touch sensors. The distinct advantage of our system is that it can easily stick to different body parts, thus endowing AR glasses with posture-adaptive handwriting input. We explored the design space of on-body device positions and identified the best interaction positions for various user postures. To flatten users' learning curves, we adapt our device to the established writing habits of different users by training a 36-character (i.e., A-Z, 0-9) recognition neural network in a human-in-the-loop manner. Such a personalization attempt ultimately achieves a low error rate of 0.005 on average for users with different writing styles. Subjective feedback shows that our solution has a good performance in system practicability and social acceptance. Empirically, we conducted a heuristic study to explore and identify the best interaction Position-Posture Correlation. Experimental results show that our Handwriting Velcro excels similar work [6] and commercial product in both practicality (12.3 WPM) and user-friendliness in different contexts.

Abstract:
- In this article the authors reflect upon the emotional aspects of the therapeutic relationship, and especially on anger and boredom, two emotions that never had room within the theory of systemic therapy. This notwithstanding, systemic therapists often find themselves in situations where they experience such emotions with their clients. The leading thread of the present work is, therefore, the description of some situations where psychotherapy appears more difficult because anger and boredom are perceived as obstacles. Manifold opportunities emerge, instead, when both therapists and clients feel free and entitled to acknowledge such emotions and meta-communicate on them. To give a processual sense to these (and other) emotions, the authors think consistent with systemic thinking to locate them in the relational space "between" the actors of therapy. Therapist(s) and client(s) create a dialogical exchange with emotional aspects: in this perspective, the information brought by so-called unpleasant emotions is as relevant as that brought by satisfaction or enthusiasm. Key words: Emotions, theory of technique, systemic therapy, therapeutic relationship, anger, boredom.

Abstract:
The focus of the present study is the sustainability of the settlements in the Lake Velence area, especially Velence and Gardony, which are at the center of pressure by tourism in the area. At the beginning of the study, immediately after the introduction of the concepts of sustainability and tourism destination management and the characterization of Lake Velence and its tourism, a comparative assessment of the Integrated Settlement Development Strategies of the cities of Velence and Gárdony is presented. Gárdony’s strategy focuses on the sustainability of the economy and the urban and natural environment, while Velence has a stronger social aspect. The study determined the strengths and weaknesses, which are in line with the results of the indicator-based research presented in the second part of the study that aimed to establish the sustainability ranking of the region. We considered the direction and extent of changes between 2010 and 2018 and compared it with the absolute data series for 2018. Velence and Gárdony are in the middle category in the sustainability rankings, while Velence is among the best in the latter.

Carex bulgarica (Domin) Lazare 1986 is a younger homonym of C. bulgarica Velen. 1889, the latter being validly published as an alternative name along with C. digitata var. bulgarica Velen. Therefore we publish here a replacement name, Carex lazarei, for the species previously called C. bulgarica by Lazare. Carex lazarei belongs to the C. sempervirens Vill. complex and its occurrence is restricted to acidophilous habitats of the Balkan mountains. Although it is often regarded as conspecific with C. sempervirens, we are of the view that this entity needs the status of species. A type specimen is designated here as the second-step lectotype of the name C. sempervirens var. bulgarica Domin.

Abstract:
Abstract We examined seasonal prevalence of a haematozoan parasite (Haemoproteus velans) of the Red-bellied Woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus) in the Apalachicola National Forest, northern Florida. We also investigated how infection with H. velans was associated with host mass, body condition, and overwinter survival. Analysis of blood smears taken from individual woodpeckers between May 2000 and July 2001 indicated that prevalence of H. velans peaked in July 2000, at ∼80% of individuals sampled, decreased to 0% in January and February 2001, and peaked again in July 2001, at ∼50% of individuals. Infection with H. velans was associated with low mass and poor body condition in males. Infection showed no association with female mass. In addition, infection with H. velans showed no relationship with overwinter survival. Our data reemphasize the importance of considering seasonal variation in parasite prevalence during testing for haematozoa. In addition, our data suggest that, although infection with H. velans is associated with poorer host condition, it does not negatively affect host survival.

Abstract:
Abstract Nature has experienced so many adjustments throughout its life cycle, such as evolutions, climate change, and natural selection, and it still manages to exist today. Therefore, it will be an excellent example to be imitated into a product or process since it is most likely sustainable and comply human needs. Imitating nature’s process, design, or system is called Biomimicry Approach. In this research, researchers develop a new design for Velcro. Velcro is a fastener that consists of 2 parts: hook and loop. Both parts are made of nylon thread and will be fastened together. Current Velcro products are not durable because of the design and also materials. It can be easily wrinkled and damage the fabric it is glued. This study aims to develop Velcro design to have a sustainable design using the technical steps in each biomimicry design spiral methodology stage. Researchers used Biomimicry Approach to find the best development for the Velcro product and generate a conceptual design for Velcro. The natural model used in the conceptual design was a Lentinula edodes (shitake mushroom). The design assessment indicator used were von mises stress, safety factory, and displacement. The results showed that the development design of Velcro with the Biomimicry Design Spiral Approach was acceptable and safe.

Abstract:
Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) are broadly used in numerous applications such as computer vision and image classification. Although CNN models deliver state-of-the-art accuracy, they require heavy computational resources that are not always affordable or available on every platform. Limited performance, system cost, and energy consumption, such as in edge devices, argue for the optimization of computations in neural networks. Toward this end, we propose herein the value-locality-based compression (VELCRO) algorithm for neural networks. VELCRO is a method to compress general-purpose neural networks that are deployed for a small subset of focused specialized tasks. Although this study focuses on CNNs, VELCRO can be used to compress any deep neural network. VELCRO relies on the property of value locality, which suggests that activation functions exhibit values in proximity through the inference process when the network is used for specialized tasks. VELCRO consists of two stages: a preprocessing stage that identifies output elements of the activation function with a high degree of value locality, and a compression stage that replaces these elements with their corresponding average arithmetic values. As a result, VELCRO not only saves the computation of the replaced activations but also avoids processing their corresponding output feature map elements. Unlike common neural network compression algorithms, which require computationally intensive training processes, VELCRO introduces significantly fewer computational requirements. An analysis of our experiments indicates that, when CNNs are used for specialized tasks, they introduce a high degree of value locality relative to the general-purpose case. In addition, the experimental results show that without any training process, VELCRO produces a compression-saving ratio in the range 13.5–30.0% with no degradation in accuracy. Finally, the experimental results indicate that, when VELCRO is used with a relatively low compression target, it significantly improves the accuracy by 2–20% for specialized CNN tasks.

Abstract:

Abstract:
For the fifth year in a row, the project called 'Let's spread the rainbow of friendship amongst generations’ has been carried out at the Anton Aškerc Velenje Primary School premises. The project was designed as a form of intergenerational cooperation between the students and the younger as well as the older participants in- and outside of the school. Within the project the school was connected to three units of the Velenje Kindergarten (the units are called Najdihojca, Vrtiljak and Jakec) as well as to the Velenje Centre for Education and Qualification, the Velenje Home for Elderly Care and the Velenje Third Age University. All the above mentioned partners, the children’s parents and grandparents as well as the teachers working at the school participated and worked together in various activities and events. The aim of the project was to present examples of technical activities within the project and their integration in the form of a creative technical cooperation of different generations. Key words: intergenerational cooperation, bird house, branch, desktop stand for office supplies, waste wood remnants.

Abstract:
This work presents the results of a study of 7 cоenopopulations of the endemic and rare for the Crimea taxon Satureja montana L. subsp. taurica (Velen.) P.W. Ball. The studies were carried out in 3 types of ecotope: gravelly-marl slopes, limestone plateaus, structural scarps and limestone boulder in the Crimean Foothills. Determined the ontogenetic, vitality, spatial structures and calculated the ontogenetic indices. A population age and efficiency indices were calculated for each population. The ontogenetic structure of cоenopopulations was analyzed by the method of L. A. Zhukova and according to the L. Zhivotovsky classification “delta omega”. The study of the vitality structure was carried out according to the Zlobin Yu. A. method. The type of spatial distribution of individuals in the population was defined on the Odum index. As a result, we revealed that cоenopopulations of S. montana L. subsp. taurica are characterized by a single-peak ontogenetic spectrum with a peak on mature generative individuals (g2). However, the populations of limestone boulder have a tendency towards left-sided shift of ontogenetic spectra but gravelly-marl ecotopes toward a right-sided shift of ontogenetic spectra. S. montana L. subsp. taurica cоenopopulations, according to the classification “delta omega” refers to the transitional, mature and aging types. This is due to the high participation of generative and senile individuals in the composition of the majority populations. Individuals S. montana L. subsp. taurica reach maximum realization of vital status in phytocоenosis growing on gravelly-marl ecotopes. Individuals of S. montana L. subsp. taurica in the studied communities have aggregated (contagious) distributions. When negative factors that change the environment (ecotope) appear or intensify, the type of spatial structure changes to a random distribution. In general, the studied cоenopopulations showed a complex heterogeneous structure that allows the species to grow in various habitats. The results indicate a high ecological adaptability of the species and a potentially high ability of S. montana L. subsp. taurica survive even in the most extreme natural ecotopes.
