Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Background: Functional tricuspid regurgitation (TR) is usually caused by leaflet tethering, and annuloplasty is usually recommended to repair annulus dilatation. This work aimed to evaluate the impact of the degree of the tricuspid valve (TV) tethering on the early outcome of tricuspid valve repair with the De-Vega technique. Methods: This prospective study included 50 patients with De-Vega tricuspid valve repair. Patients were divided into two groups; Group A (n= 25) included patients with tricuspid valve tethering of 8 mm or less, and Group B (n= 25) included patients with tricuspid valve tethering distance of more than 8 mm. Results: The mean age of Group A was 46.1 ±3.5 years compared to 49.6 ±7 years in Group B. There were significant differences in postoperative ejection fraction (48.7 ±12.5 vs. 39.1 ±9.4 %, P= 0.003), TV tethering distance (0.6 ±0.2 vs. 1.1 ±0.4 cm, P <0.001), and area (1.1 ±0.5 vs. 2.6 ±0.9 cm2; P<0.001), and right ventricle fractional area (32.2± 7.9 vs. 25.4 ±9.7 cm2, P= 0.008) in Group A vs. B, respectively. There were no differences in postoperative complications, ICU, and hospital stay between groups. Conclusion: Residual tricuspid regurgitation after De-Vega annuloplasty could be related to TV tethering distance. Increased TV tethering distance could be associated with reduced postoperative ejection fraction.

Abstract:
Purpose Previous research has documented that high vega CEOs increase R&D investment (Coles et al., 2006) and liquidity (Liu and Mauer, 2011), but provided little clue about how those CEOs get the necessary resources to support those choices. Frankel et al. (2016) highlight firms’ compensation incentives to manipulate working capital components, the authors use accounts receivable as an example to illustrate. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach The authors employ sorting, and various regression methods and adjust the Faulkender and Wang (2006) model to test two hypotheses. Findings The authors find a negative relation between managerial risk-taking incentives (vega) and accounts receivable and a negative relation between vega and the market value of accounts receivable to shareholders. Research limitations/implications The authors do not compare PPE investment, external financing with accounts receivable to figure out whether accounts receivable is better and more efficient to adjust. Practical implications The evidence primarily supports the internal allocation hypothesis that high vega managers reduce the accounts receivable investment and that the equity market discounts the value of accounts receivable for high vega firms. Social implications Equity holders should consider the internal allocation effect when setting CEO compensation incentives, also they should be cautious when CEOs change their accounts receivable management policy. The equity market discounts the value of accounts receivable for high vega firms. Originality/value This study provides important information about the CEO compensation incentives, a new explanation about the formation of accounts receivable management policy, and the market value implication of accounts receivable.

Abstract:
We use CEO pay sensitivity to stock performance (delta) and stock volatility (vega) to provide empirical evidence that CEO compensation structure influences firm Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) performance. We find that delta has no significant effect on CSR, while vega has a strong, causal relationship with CSR. Our findings suggest that CEOs do not view CSR as value enhancing, but as a way to increase their own compensation through vega. Firms that want to improve their social performance should consider vega as an important compensation incentive for executives.

Abstract:
Sensitivity analysis can be used to carry out hedging strategies. The sensitivity value measures how much the price change of the option influenced by some parameters. The aim of this study is to determine the sensitivity analysis of the buying price of European option by using the Greek method on Black Scholes Formula. From this study we get the values of delta, gamma, theta, vega, and rho. The values of deltas, gamma, vega, and rho are positive, which means that the value of the option is more sensitive than the corresponding parameter. The most sensitive value of gamma is obtained when the stock price approaches the strike price and approaches the expiry date. The value of theta obtained is negative and hence the most sensitive theta value is when the value is getting smaller. While, the most sensitive value of vega is obtained when the stock price is close to the strike price and is far from the expiry date. The most sensitive value of rho is obtained when the stock price gets bigger and farther from the expiry date.

Abstract:
We study the effect of CEOs’ risk-taking incentives (vega), derived from their stock options, on earnings management (EMGT) by banks. Prior research finds an inconsistent relationship between vega and EMGT in non-financial firms. In the banking industry, the effect of vega on EMGT is further complicated by the strict regulatory environment. To establish causality, we exploit the exogenous reduction in vega resulting from Financial Accounting Standard (FAS) 123R in 2005 that mandates a fair-value-based method to expense stock options and increases costs of granting option compensation. Using the difference-in-differences approach, we find that banks with a larger drop in CEO vega due to FAS 123R significantly reduce EMGT. The findings suggest that CEO vega has a positive and causal effect on bank EMGT. Our results are robust enough to employ in different research designs and specifications. Furthermore, we find that the negative effect of FAS 123R on EMGT is weaker in banks subject to a higher possibility of regulatory intervention.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the effects of chief executive officer (CEO) vega on firm policies in the Australian share market based on a panel data set drawn from the 137 Australian public firms for the period 2003-2012. Design/methodology/approach To allow mutual causation between our variables, the authors use the two-stage least squares estimation method, controlling for firm fixed effects. The authors use the difference-in-differences model to test whether the 2009 Australian tax reforms may discourage high-vega CEOs to take value-enhancing risks. Findings The authors find the evidence that vega induces CEOs to adopt the riskier financial policy in the Australian capital market. This evidence is further supported by the negative association between vega and firm conservative activities including cash and hedging policies. Further, the result shows that the 2009 tax reforms reduce the CEOs’ willingness to engage in risky financial policy. This finding implies that regulators may restore the 2009 reforms’ “deferred tax point” back to its pre-2009 form. Originality/value Based on the study’s results, firms should grant CEOs more out-of-the money options with a longer time to expiration to offset the 2009 tax reforms’ negative impact on the CEO’s incentive to take value-enhancing risks.

Abstract:
We consider the discretization of a boundary value problem for a general linear second-order elliptic operator with smooth coefficients using the Virtual Element approach. As in [A. H. Schatz, An observation concerning Ritz–Galerkin methods with indefinite bilinear forms, Math. Comput. 28 (1974) 959–962] the problem is supposed to have a unique solution, but the associated bilinear form is not supposed to be coercive. Contrary to what was previously done for Virtual Element Methods (as for instance in [L. Beirão da Veiga, F. Brezzi, A. Cangiani, G. Manzini, L. D. Marini and A. Russo, Basic principles of virtual element methods, Math. Models Methods Appl. Sci. 23 (2013) 199–214]), we use here, in a systematic way, the [Formula: see text]-projection operators as designed in [B. Ahmad, A. Alsaedi, F. Brezzi, L. D. Marini and A. Russo, Equivalent projectors for virtual element methods, Comput. Math. Appl. 66 (2013) 376–391]. In particular, the present method does not reduce to the original Virtual Element Method of [L. Beirão da Veiga, F. Brezzi, A. Cangiani, G. Manzini, L. D. Marini and A. Russo, Basic principles of virtual element methods, Math. Models Methods Appl. Sci. 23 (2013) 199–214] for simpler problems as the classical Laplace operator (apart from the lowest-order cases). Numerical experiments show the accuracy and the robustness of the method, and they show as well that a simple-minded extension of the method in [L. Beirão da Veiga, F. Brezzi, A. Cangiani, G. Manzini, L. D. Marini and A. Russo, Basic principles of virtual element methods, Math. Models Methods Appl. Sci. 23 (2013) 199–214] to the case of variable coefficients produces, in general, sub-optimal results.

Abstract:
SUMMARY: In 2013, the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) proposed an amendment to Auditing Standard No. 12 (PCAOB 2010) that would require auditors to consider executive compensation in audit planning because of potential fraud risk associated with equity incentives. We use the association between audit fees and CEO and CFO equity incentives to infer whether auditors increase audit scope and perceive greater risk as equity incentives increase. Equity incentives are defined as the sensitivity of the value of executives' equity portfolios to changes in share price (delta incentive) and to changes in return volatility (vega incentive). We find a positive association between audit fees and vega, but not delta. However, when we interact vega with proxies for residual auditor business risk, we find that the fee premiums for risk decrease as vega increases. Our results suggest that auditors do consider executive compensation in audit planning.

Abstract:
Purpose This activity dealt with the thermal analysis of the launch vehicle Vega C through a lumped parameter model. The Vega C is the upgrade of the actual launch vehicle Vega within the Vega Consolidation and Evolution Program, whose objective is to develop a consolidated – hence the C – version of the Vega by 2020. The main aim of the study was verifying the thickness of the external thermal protection of the launch vehicle, such that the structure and equipment temperatures were kept within their operating ranges. Design/methodology/approach The analysis has been performed by means of ESATAN–TMS during a time-frame that included the stand-by on ground phase and a flight phase up to the separation of the second stage from the third one. Two operating conditions have been considered, i.e. the worst hot and worst cold cases. The study has been divided as follows: geometry definition through spatial discretization; application of materials and optical properties; application of thermal loads; thermal analysis; and post-processing of the results in ThermNV. Findings It was concluded that the calculated temperatures were within the supposed project specifications, while their trends reflected the expected behavior. Originality/value During the flight phase, the mutual separation of the investigated stages has been explicitly modelled through a routine specifically developed for this purpose. Therefore, the submodels of each stage have been disabled at the correct instant according to the known time-sheet.

AbstractMagnetic fields in Vega, ϒ Geminorum, and Sirius are searched by using empirical and theoretical relations of magnetic-field strength to the relative differences between the equivalent widths of each pair of the two Fe II lines near 6150 and 4400 Å. We estimated the possible strengths of their magnetic fields as follows: 0.0 kG or 2.5 – 3.5 kG for Vega, 0 – 2 kG or 2.8 – 3.0 kG for ϒ Gem, and 0.0 kG or ∼ 2(?) – 2.5 kG for Sirius. The empirical relation yields the former value in each star, which is consistent with those determined through polarization measurements, while the theoretical relation the latter with systematically large values.

With devices that raise the water (wheels, counter-wheels, motors and countermotors), the orchards climb the slopes with terracing. The Ricote Valley is one of the last places in the Iberian Peninsula from which the Moriscos were expelled, in 1613. Their imprint is preserved in the hydraulic heritage, farming systems and cultural landscapes. These have a rich hydraulic heritage, where some of its elements have become a Valricotí identity, such as the waterwheels, which together with agricultural practices have allowed the candidacy for The Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS)

Abstract:
Purpose China has formally implemented equity incentive for more than 10 years; thus, a considerable number of equity incentive programs has entered the exercise period. This means that it is time to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the incentive effects of equity incentive throughout the whole implementation phase. The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between equity incentive, enterprise’s risk taking and risk decisions in China. Design/methodology/approach Using sensitivity of executives’ wealth and stock price (Delta) to measure the alignment effect and using sensitivity of executives’ wealth and stock return volatility (Vega) to measure the risk-taking effect, this paper aims to empirically test the relation of equity incentive and enterprise’s risk taking and risk decisions. Findings The authors find that Vega is positively related to risk taking; however, this improvement was mainly reflected in the private enterprises rather than state-owned enterprises. In terms of corporate policy choice, the authors find that Vega is positively related to firm focus and leverage. But, they have not found that Vega can promote R&D investment. Originality/value Existing studies have mostly concerned about the executives’ opportunistic behavior; however, analyses of the positive effect of equity incentive are limited. The authors use a combination of risk-taking incentives and alignment incentives to test the relationship between equity incentive and risk taking.

Abstract:
Background: Isolated tricuspid valve surgery is a rarely performed procedure and traditionally is associated with a bad prognosis, although its clinical outcomes still are little known. The aim of this study was to assess the short- and long-term clinical outcomes obtained at our center after isolated tricuspid valve surgery as treatment for severe tricuspid regurgitation. Methods: This retrospective study included 71 consecutive patients with severe tricuspid regurgitation who underwent isolated tricuspid valve surgery between December 1996 and December 2017. Perioperative and long-term mortality, tricuspid valve reoperation, and functional class were analyzed after follow up. Results: Regarding surgery, 7% of patients received a De Vega annuloplasty, 14.1% an annuloplasty ring, 11.3% a mechanical prosthesis, and 67.6% a biological prosthesis. Perioperative mortality was 12.7% and no variable was shown to be predictive of this event. After a median follow up of 45.5 months, long-term mortality was 36.6%, and the multivariate analysis identified atrial fibrillation as the only predictor (Hazard Ratio 3.014, 95% confidence interval 1.06-8.566; P = 0.038). At the end of follow up, 63.6% of survivors had functional class I. Conclusions: Isolated tricuspid valve surgery was infrequent in our center. Perioperative mortality was high, as was long-term mortality. However, a high percentage of survivors were barely symptomatic after follow up.

The star spectrum is an information which is though to be a map of the star. The shape of the spectral line actually shows the nature of the star atmosphere, which is the only part researcher can be reached. The intensities of spectral lines will determine the chemical composition of the stars contained in the atmospheres of the stars. The approach used to determine the chemical composition and the effective temperature of the star is spectroscopy. The spectroscopy method had been done in this study using the GAO-ITB RTS telescope system which consisting of the Celestron C11 telescope, NEO-R 1000 spectrograph and CCD SBIG ST-8 camera. The object studied is Vega (α Lyr) star which has a magnitude of 0.00 that the main sequence star of the A0 spectrum class. The image data obtained then be processed using IRAF software to obtain the final spectrum graph with the y-axis representing the flux in erg cm-2s-1 and the x-axis representing the wavelength in units of Å. Furthermore, we match the absorption wavelength on the final spectrum graph to the existing wavelength of the Atomic Spectra Database (ASD) to identify the atmospheric chemical composition of the Vega star. Effective temperature can be calculated by using the Wien shifting laws by find out the maximum wavelength of the final spectrum graph. The most found element in the atmosphere of Vega star was hydrogen (H) that consist of Hε, Hδ, Hγ, Hβ, and Hα. The value of effective temperature of the Vega star is 7136 K that has difference percentage of 22.85 % from the mean temperature of A type star.

Abstract:
Background: Re-evaluation of reconstructive possibilities in the correction of degenerative mitral valve disease is of great clinical necessity nowadays. Material and methods: Analyzing the nature of the pathologies that determined the development mechanism of valve insufficiency, 136 cases of anterior cusp prolapse and 152 cases of posterior cusp prolapse were determined. Results: Cord rupture was established in 79 (58.9%) patients, cusp defects (”Cleft”) were appreciated in positions A1, A2, A3 – 15 cases (5.9%) and in P1, P2, P3 – in 92 (86.6%) cases. The surgical techniques performed were separated into: (1) resection – for the anterior and posterior cusps – 45 cases and accompanied by the slide – in 30 cases; (2) with Gore-Tex neo-chordal implantation – 115 cases, with cord transfer – 30; (3) Cusp enlargement with autologous pericardium – 5 cases, Alfieri procedure – 8. Implantation of a support ring required 130 (97.0%) patients. The correction of the associated valve disease required 125 patients (De Vega – 89.1%, ring – 8). Coronary bypass was required – 16 patients. There were no postoperative fatal cases. Conclusions: Based on the data obtained, reconstructive repair surgery can be can recommend for valves of degenerative, post-traumatic, ischemic, post-endocardial etiology as effective and sustainable techniques over time, being a superior alternative to replacement with prosthetic valves.

Methods. A prospective analysis was performed on 50 patients (pts) with rheumatic mitral disease and associate secondary tricuspid insufficiency who underwent mitral valve replacement from January 1995 to December 1998. Surgical indication to tricuspid annuloplasty was considered in patients with echocardiographic tricuspid annulus diameter >21 mm/m2, regardless semiquantitative evaluation of tricuspid insufficiency. De Vega annuloplasty was performed in 33 out of 50 patients. Results. Hospital mortality was 2.0% (CL 0.3–3.6). The follow up of the discharged patients ranged from 3 to 48 months (mean 25±15.9). Three late deaths occurred (6.1% CL 2.8–9.2). Forty-two patients out of the 46 followed up (91.3% CL 84.9–93.8) were in I or II NYHA class. In eight patients (16.3% of discharged patients) the obtained result has been considered as ‘negative late results’: persisting moderate (three cases) or moderate-severe (five cases) Trl, together with congestive heart failure requiring a furosemide intake of >25 mg/day. No patients had severe Trl at follow up. The statistics analysis demonstrated the ‘preoperative fraction shortening of the tricuspid annulus’ ( P = 0.038) as factor predictive of late negative result. The incidence of late negative result was 57.1 % among patients with fractional shortening lower than 25% and 0% among those patients with fractional shortening greater than 25% ( P = 0.0001). Conclusions. The choice to treat the tricuspid insufficiency according to indexed tricuspid annulus dimension (>21 mm/m2) has been effective in terms of clinical efficacy and of late functional result. Fractional shortening of the tricuspid annulus, expression of right ventricular cardiomyopathy in patients with poorest prognosis, affects the postoperative evolution of tricuspid insufficiency.

Abstract:
From an analysis of over 3,000 beads and pendants from seven contemporary Late Neolithic/Copper Age (3500–2500 BC) sites in the Portuguese Estremadura, two dominant patterns emerge: (1) most beads show a high degree of standardization in terms of size and shape and are made from local materials; and (2) a minority are made from non-local, rare, and visually distinctive materials (e.g.variscite, ivory), and are less standardized and more labour-intensive. The emphasis on a wide-range of materials suggests that uncommon ornaments may have functioned as ‘value added' materials with special significance, enhancing potential design combinations. Material preferences for beads, bracelets, pendants, plaques, and ground stone tools (da Veiga Ferreira 1951; Lillios 1997, 2008) appear to mirror other Western Mediterranean raw material preferences for ornaments and other polished stone objects (Goñi Quinteiro et al. 1999; Harrison and Orozco Köhler 2001; Pascual Benito 1998; Skeates 2010; Teruel Berbell 1986) suggesting that the Estremadura participated in aspects of a wider system of shared symbolic values.

Abstract:
Purpose This paper aims to investigate the effects of some corporate governance mechanisms and executive compensation on audit fees in an emerging market. Design/methodology/approach The study population consists of 540 observations and 90 listed companies on the Tehran Stock Exchange during the years 2009-2014. The statistical model used in this study is a multivariate regression model; besides, the statistical technique used to test the hypotheses proposed in this research is panel data. Findings The changes in the value of a CEO’s own firm stock option portfolio, in thousands of rials (Iran’s currency), for a 0.01 change in stock return volatility and stock price are defined as Vega and Delta, respectively. The results demonstrated that there is a positive association between audit fees and delta, but not Vega; this means that a fee premium is linked to CEO Delta incentives. The findings show that Iranian companies pay more audit fees when they give managers more rewards. In addition, the results show that there is not a significant relationship between fees resulting from audit risk and Delta and Vega incentives of the board. Inconsistent with agency theory, the authors found that the independence of board members did not have any effect on audit fees. As a final point, the outcomes of the paper demonstrate that managers who invest in companies under their own management do not have any impact on the amount of audit fee. To put it another way, there is not any significant connection between the board ownership and audit fees. Practical implications This is one of the most important studies that simultaneously surveys the impacts of corporate governance mechanisms and executive compensation in the Iranian audit market. The results of this study will reveal more than the role of corporate governance mechanisms for society and users of financial statements because as tools on the CEO actions, they always have to pay attention to the implementation of corporate principles in the economic entity’ operation. Originality/value The present study has examined the relationship between two cases of corporate governance mechanisms named the board independence and the board ownership with audit fees in a country where, to the authors’ knowledge as in most other developing markets, such a relationship has not been a subject of empirical research. Moreover, the use of a two-dimensional measure of executive compensation, namely, Delta and Vega incentives, primarily considering research undertaken in an emerging market, as a valuable contribution may be observed.

This paper proposes a simple modification of the Black–Scholes model by assuming that the volatility of the stock may jump at a random time τ from a value σa to a value σb. It shows that, if the market price of volatility risk is unknown, but constant, all contingent claims can be valued from the actual price C0, of some arbitrarily chosen "basis" option. Closed form solutions for the prices of European options as well as explicit formulas for vega and delta hedging are given. All such solutions only depend on σa, σb and C0. The prices generated by the model produce a "smile"-shaped curve of the implied volatility.

Abstract:
We provide data on the presence of Eurasian otter Lutra lutra (Linnaeus, 1758) (Mustelidae Fischer von Waldheim, 1817) from seasonal Mediterranean-type streams tributaries to the Guadalquivir river (Seville, SW Iberian Peninsula), from observation of spraints for five years (2014-2018). The presence of otters has been verified in several streams with intermittent hydrological regime and intense water limitation, though it prefers sections surrounded by forest vegetation and with permanence of lentic waters in summer. Additionally, we have reconstructed a semblance of its historical evolution in the territory from 1950 to the present. In short, the presence of otter in this territory, close to the area of urban aglomeration of Seville, reinforces the positive trend of this species in the province. Nevertheless, the amplitude of its original distribution area at a local scale has not been recovered yet. It is prevented from the vulnerability of scarce available habitats, road accidents and the need for suitable management strategies, compatible with the dominant agricultural land-use.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTTwo small glaciers on James Ross Island, the north-eastern Antarctic Peninsula, experienced surface mass gain between 2009 and 2015 as revealed by field measurements. A positive cumulative surface mass balance of 0.57 ± 0.67 and 0.11 ± 0.37 m w.e. was observed during the 2009–2015 period on Whisky Glacier and Davies Dome, respectively. The results indicate a change from surface mass loss that prevailed in the region during the first decade of the 21st century to predominantly positive surface mass balance after 2009/10. The spatial pattern of annual surface mass-balance distribution implies snow redistribution by wind on both glaciers. The mean equilibrium line altitudes for Whisky Glacier (311 ± 16 m a.s.l.) and Davies Dome (393 ± 18 m a.s.l.) are in accordance with the regional data indicating 200–300 m higher equilibrium line on James Ross and Vega Islands compared with the South Shetland Islands. The mean accumulation-area ratio of 0.68 ± 0.09 and 0.44 ± 0.09 determined for Whisky Glacier and Davies Dome, respectively, is similar to the value reported for Vega Island and within the range of typical values for high-latitude glaciers.

Abstract:
Objectives: Tricuspid regurgitation is a pathology that usually occurs secondary to left heart pathologies and affects the daily activities of the patients. The long-term results of tricuspid valve replacement are not very encouraging. Therefore, the primary treatment for tricuspid valve regurgitation is repair. Therefore, which repair method should be used is very critical. The aim of our study is to compare tricuspid valve De Vega annuloplasty (TDVA) and tricuspid valve ring annuloplasty (TRA) methods, which are frequently used in tricuspid regurgitation (TR). Methods: Patients who underwent TDVA or TRA in addition to mitral valve replacement at our hospital between January 01, 2017, and December 31, 2019 were included in the study. The study was designed retrospectively and was based on hospital database, patient files, and archive records. A total of 125 patients were included in the study. The pre-operative, intraoperative, and post-operative clinical features of the patients were investigated, and their cardiac status at the last follow-up visit to the hospital was investigated. Results: In the early post-operative and mid-term evaluation, TR was similar in both groups. Conclusion: There is no difference between TRA and TDVA techniques in terms of the recurrence of tricuspid valve insufficiency in the early and mid-term post-operative period. Both techniques are not perfect, and there is a need for the development of new strategies and techniques.

Abstract:
Background: Even though tricuspid regurgitation (TR) is a frequent cardiac valve disorder, and tricuspid valve annuloplasty (TVA) has been evolved to manage TR for more than 50 years, there is still a substantial controversy regarding the best durable method for TVA. We reported our midterm (3 years) outcomes of TVA using autologous pericardial (AP) band comparing it with DeVega annuloplasty for the management of functional TR. Methods: Between January 2017 and November 2018, about 175 cases with moderate or more TR underwent TVA as a part of primary left-sided valve replacement surgery. Autologous pericardial (AP) TVA was performed in 100 patients, and DeVega TVA in 75 patients. Results: Both groups are comparable as regards preoperative characteristics. Immediate postoperatively, regarding NYHA class, degree of TR, ejection fraction, and pulmonary artery systolic pressure, there was a marked improvement within the 2 groups compared to the preoperative values, without a significant difference between both groups. 94% of patients completed the follow-up period. In hospital death was 2% in the AP group, and 1% in the DeVega group. The AP group showed a marked improvement in the mean degree of TR at the same follow-up period compared to the DeVega group, 12% patients of the AP group and 21% patients of the De Vega group had 3+ or 4+ TR at 3 years postoperative follow up. There was a marked improvement in the Diastolic tricuspid annuloplasty diameter in the AP group compared to the DeVega group. There were 6.3% late deaths in our study. Conclusion: TVA with an AP was more durable than the DeVega in avoiding postoperative TR progression on the midterm results.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate how managerial risk-taking incentives affect the sensitivity of R&D investments to the availability of a firm’s internal finance. Design/methodology/approach The author studies a large panel sample of US firms from 1992 to 2013 using a dynamic structural model and estimates a system GMM estimator that accounts for unobserved firm-specific effects, and that allows the author to address the potential endogeneity of all of the financial and executive compensation variables. Findings Managerial risk-taking incentives, in particular CEO portfolio vega, have a significantly positive impact on the financial constraints that bind R&D investments. Moreover, the author finds that CEO portfolio vega has stronger impacts on the investment-cash flow sensitivity of R&D in firms that are more likely to face binding financial constraints. Originality/value Prior studies on the financial constraints of R&D investments do not consider the potential impact of executive compensation on R&D investments. The author complements this stream of literature by providing novel results showing that managerial risk-taking incentives have a significant impact on the severity of the financial constraints on R&D investments.
