Abstract:
Systems of Life offers a wide-ranging revaluation of the emergence of biopolitics in Europe from the mid– eighteenth to the mid–nineteenth century. In staging an encounter among literature, political economy, and the still emergent sciences of life in that historical moment, the essays collected here reopen the question of how concepts of animal, vegetable, and human life, among other biological registers, had an impact on the Enlightenment project of thinking politics and economics as a joint enterprise. The volume’s contributors consider politics, economics, and the biological as distinct, semi-autonomous spheres whose various combinations required inventive, sometimes incomplete, acts of conceptual mediation, philosophical negotiation, disciplinary intervention, or aesthetic representation.

Abstract:
This chapter turns on the concept ofsensationto sketch some of the ways plants are caught up in contemporary biopolitics. Specifically, the idea of the floral sensation both describes the spectacular qualities of (some) plants that make them particularly desirable commodities in the global floral industry, and gestures to recent research that indicate that plantshavesensations that are both similar to and radically different from human ones. Together, these meanings demonstrate that plants are extensively implicated in biopolitical relations, but as agents with specific capacities rather than as passive objects of manipulation. To understand the involvement of active plants in biopolitics, then, requires attentiveness both to the multiplicity of vegetal involvements in socio-political entanglements, and to the ways in which plants complicate questions of life itself; ethical and political responses to plant life must therefore move beyond assertions of plant similarity in the direction of also recognizing their unassimilable differences.

Abstract:
Chinese spirit-basket divination, which dates to the fifth century, would have been lost to the world had it not been reincarnated as Indonesian jailangkung. The term is the homophonic rendition of the Chinese cai lan gong [菜篮公, vegetable basket deity] and unambiguously links the Indonesian practice with the Chinese. Contemporary Chinese divinatory methods have replaced the clumsy basket planchette with the handier triforked branch or a pen held in the medium’s hand, but a spirit basket still features in jailangkung and remains the key element in involutions of the prototype. For example, Nini Thowong’s spirit-possessed doll originated as an effigy built over a basket armature. Jailangkung and its iterations are performed as sacred rituals or games of amusement all over the archipelago to an extent that jailangkung has been absorbed into Indonesian magic folklore. Jailangkung starred in the country’s most successful horror movie. This investigation discusses the domestication of an alien tradition as social-political engineering.

Abstract:
From the summer of 1918 Bruno Taut had been collecting political and, above all, socialist texts. He prepared excerpts from essays on urban and land issues in such a way that, together with 30 handwritten drawings, they describe the earth's surface as a "good dwelling" for everyone. In his opinion, the prerequisite for this was the elimination of all cities and states. Taut's aim was to show the consequences of an even distribution of people under the conditions of a need arising from the inner necessity of each individual. The book should enable its readers to reflect “on what has to be considered in the present when building new settlements. Their unlimited variety of shapes could almost be called vegetable and organic. “The Dissolution of Cities”, published in August 1920, was Bruno Taut's fourth book of utopian architectural visions after “Die Stadtkrone” (1917/1919), “Alpine Architecture” (1918 / February 1920), and “Der Weltbaumeister” (June 1920).
