Abstract:
Abstract The American economist Thorstein Veblen’s The Theory of the Leisure Class (1899) has been used to support and define concepts of architectural modernity for more than one hundred years. Best known for introducing the concept of “conspicuous consumption,” this influential book has been especially valuable for historians of the architecture of consumer culture. Yet curiously, Veblen’s own architectural examples have escaped scholarly attention. This article explores the link Veblen drew between Gothic Revival architecture and cultural barbarism. Inverting the concepts and terminology of race science, Veblen used the image of the Gothic Revival university to criticize the rhetoric of American exceptionalism. Seen through the lens of Veblen’s writing, Henry Ives Cobb’s design for the University of Chicago (1891–97), where Veblen taught for fourteen years, represents the transformation of leisure-class aesthetics under the logic of capitalism.

Abstract:
The article considers the possible compatibility (in epistemological and ontological terms) of the conceptions of convention and institutions in the thought of John Maynard Keynes, Thorstein Veblen and Douglass North. We argue, first, that while Veblen suggests an approach to institutions based on instincts, North sustains an approach to institutions based on rational choice, which implies distinct conceptions about institutions and the social world. We then present Keynes's ontological commitments and the epistemological implications of his ontology. We conclude that there is a background ontological compatibility between Keynes and the late North in that both accept that the socioeconomic world is fundamentally uncertain and non-ergodic; also that Keynes is epistemologically closer to North than Veblen in studying the economy as a market system embedded in social institutions; and finally that Keynes's treatment of individual action is closer to Veblen’s than North’s, in that both Keynes and Veblen see human action as based on instincts and not only on rationality.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this essay is to argue that, for Veblen, the contribution of advertising to mature business enterprise was crucial. Although Thorstein Veblen’s Theory of the Leisure Class is widely credited with introducing the concept of “conspicuous consumption”, that book is silent on the contribution of the sales effort – or advertising – to such consumption. One must turn to Veblen’s later writings on the business system to find an analysis of advertising within oligopoly capitalism, what Veblen called the system of “absentee ownership”. At the beginning of the twentieth century business faced looming threats of technological progress and democratic discontent. The material prospect of accelerating productivity might soon “end the struggle or lessen the strain” of economic life; democracy might insist that the industrial system serve social needs in efficient ways. To ward off such challenges, business developed a two-prong approach to perpetuate scarcity: carefully managed control of output and an increasingly insistent, rationalized and expensive sales effort. The growth of advertising reflected a systematic expenditure of energy, talent and resources on a misdirection of human effort, one whose chief effect was to prolong “the strain” of everyday life in futile pursuit of waste. Whether such irrationality could be sustained indefinitely, or whether it might finally undermine the society that propels its pursuit, is an issue that Veblen raises, but to which he refuses to give any final answer. Design/methodology/approach – The paper analyzes the full range of Veblen’s theoretical writings on consumption, technology and the sales effort. Findings – The paper insists that Veblen is the first radical political economist to provide a systematic critical analysis of advertising as an essential element of mature capitalism. Originality/value – The paper connects Veblen’s earliest thinking on “conspicuous consumption” to his mature analysis of advertising in the functioning of business enterprise. It will enrich understanding among academics and students, scholars of marketing and economic and social theorists, of Veblen’s critical analysis of the evolution of consumption, production and business enterprise.

Abstract:
This note deals with the QWERTY effect in Russian scholarly discourse. The case in point is the concept of conspicuous consumption, and how this core term of Thorstein Veblen is translated into Russian in the papers on the sociology of consumption and institutional studies. Russian-language authors tend to speak of “demonstrativnoye potreblenie” (demonstrative consumption), whereas Veblen himself did not use such an expression and avoided employing the adjective “demonstrative” altogether. “Demonstrativnoye potreblenie” as the Russian equivalent for conspicuous consumption got entrenched soon after the release of the translation of Veblen’s The Theory of the Leisure Class: An Economic Study of Institutions in Russian in 1984. We attribute it to the habit of adopting cumbersome anglicisms that might look more like science, for some. This note calls for a rectification of names to clarify the discourse of economists and sociologists.

Abstract:
AbstractThorstein Veblen was a pioneer in recognizing the necessity of grounding social science in Darwinian biology and exploring how evolving institutions channel biological proclivities. He especially focused upon how capitalism's social institutions guided the innate need for social status into conspicuous consumption. But why do humans seek status? Surprisingly, Veblen did not pick up on Darwin's concept of sexual selection and recognize it as the driving force behind behavior intended to favorably impress others. This article adds the Darwinian depth that Veblen missed to his understanding of the biologically driven quest for status and its channeling by social institutions. It then explores the turn of most institutionalists away from Veblen's focus on innate behavioral drives in favor of viewing human behavior as more exclusively determined by social conditions. It concludes with reflections on the implications of sexual selection and biological grounding more generally for a theory of institutional economics.

Abstract:
In the early years of the twentieth century, two outspoken and brilliant American economists, Thorstein Veblen and Irving Fisher, offered sharply-contrasting visions of how the discipline of economics should be transformed. Each taught at a leading university and had added prominence as a journal editor, but pursued economic inquiry in ways alien to senior colleagues at his university and in the profession at large. Despite the gulf separating their approaches to economics, they had been doctoral students of the same mentor, William Graham Sumner of Yale, and had each been deeply influenced by Sumner. This paper uses the exchange on neoclassical capital theory between Veblen and Fisher in the Political Science Quarterly in 1908 and 1909 to illuminate their approaches to economics and to question why the American economics profession came to follow Fisher's path–even though Veblen, unlike Fisher, attracted devoted disciples and was considered in American social thought (excepting academic economists) as the standard-bearer of “the New Economics.” Despite Veblen's antipathy to those aspects of Fisher's work that became dominant in mainstream economics, there was a close affinity between Veblen's Theory of Business Enterprise (1904) and Fisher's debt-deflation theory of depressions, which remained (until very recently) outside the mainstream and has been taken up by such heterodox economists as Hyman Minsky.

Abstract:
We survey Russian-language research papers which refer to Thorstein Veblen’s Evolutionary Theory (VET) and, more specifically, the so-called Veblenian dichotomy. This latter consists of analytical categories describing two types of behavioral patterns, namely «productive» and «unproductive» proclivities, and how they affect the direction of the given society’s cultural and economic evolution. Our focus is on how Russian scholars perceived the Veblenian dichotomy and employed this theoretical concept in empirical studies. We build a sample of 48 research papers from the Russian eLIBRARY.RU database, Google Scholar and Google Books. Our claim is that some misunderstandings and misinterpretations of Veblen’s theoretical concept may have distorted its original meaning and thrust. Such perceptions may have, in turn, created a bias in the interpretation of empirical results, when references to Veblen underpin statements which Veblen would not have made. For instance, institutions are positioned as opposed to technology, fully in line with the thinking of Clarence Ayres. National traditions and values are regarded an impediment to progress and innovation. Some authors view «modernization» of the economy and values as a need, regardless of socio-economic effects, whereas they condemn institutional inertia. Russian academic discourse ignores the category of instinct which was essential for Veblen. A biased application of theoretical ideas to empirical material may have contributed to the initial misunderstanding. A value or a social practice which Veblenian ethics view through a negative prism are now treated as instrumental, and vice versa. Misinterpretations of Veblen may have arisen from inaccurate reading and citing of the original or from reliance on writings by other authors. Another source of bias consists in the ideology-driven negative assessment of traditional economic culture, which have prevailed in the Russian expert discourse over the past decades.

CAPES
This research aims to discuss the convergence and divergence issues between the economic theories of Thorstein Bunde Veblen and John Maynard Keynes. To meet these objectives, it presents firstly, the core principals of Veblen’s theoretical underpinnings (based on his selected pieces), such as: instincts, habits, and institutions that shape human behavior. According to the author, the evolution of these elements is important to the understanding of the structure and the functioning of the current capitalist system. After that, the dissertation examines the Keynesian thought (developed after his General Theory, 1936) about the effective demand, the role of long-term expectations to determining employment levels and income, the economic cycles, and his perspective on the future of the capitalist system. The research found similarities in the views of both authors about the components of aggregate demand, about the determination of employment and income, the use of social conventions in decision-making agents, and the economic cycle. Nevertheless, the opinion of the authors on the future of capitalism is divergent

Abstract:
AThis thesis is about the relations which Veblen - American sociologist and economist 1857-1929, sees between culture and education. Two main points are studied by the author in which case education especially the educational system can hinder or accelerate the cultural change. What are the relations between the culture inside the educational system and the main culture of the society? Veblen choose as a field of studies the American society from the civil war to the First World War. This period is considered by him as the rising of a capitalistic education and therefore as the rising of a capitalistic culture which stops the progress of humanity. Our aim was to show that his critics were related to a puritan background common among American farmers at this time, because they were losing their power and wealth Veblen belonged to this social class

Abstract:
Thorstein Veblen, author of The Theory of the Leisure Class (1899), is memorialized in economics by the “Veblen effect,” a term introduced by Harvey Leibenstein to represent a positive consumer demand response to an increase in price. However, Leibenstein’s 1950 QJE article introducing the world to the “Veblen effect” does not cite Veblen as one of its 17 references.I begin this dissertation by revisiting Veblen’s theory of consumer behavior and evaluating its subsequent treatment in the economics literature. I find that Leibenstein (1950) misunderstands Veblen’s concept of “conspicuous consumption” and contradicts Veblen’s empirical predictions. How might Veblen’s theory be interpreted more faithfully with relevance to present-day markets? I suggest that the notion of “Veblen goods” and “Veblen consumers” is misleading, because Veblen’s theories applied to nearly all goods and consumers. My alternative approach is to look for attributes and corresponding prices whose market behavior is in line with Veblen’s predictions. I divide the attributes of goods into three classes, and I suggest that each class has its own hedonic price component: “useful,” “decorative,” and “invisible” attributes.Invisible attributes cannot be detected by the consumer’s own unaided sensory apparatus. Examples of invisible attributes are a good’s market price, scarcity, reputation, ratings, place of origin, microbial content, organic certification, and age. I refer to decorative and invisible attributes, together, as “Veblen attributes”; and I refer to the premiums consumers are willing to pay for Veblen attributes as “Veblen premiums.”In this thesis, I attempt to observe some Veblen attributes and Veblen premiums in present-day consumer markets. I report experimental results from the U.S. retail markets for beer (part II), wine (part III), and food (part IV). I employ a variety of experimental techniques, including consumer surveys, blind tasting experiments, lab experiments, and undercover experiments. I include several first-person essays to round out the narrative

Abstract:
According to Veblen (1915), the evolution of institutions is the same as institutional development and this is the development of society. The aim of this paper is answer the question: what is the role of the individual in Veblen's institutional evolution? The general objective is to seek the role occupied by the individual in Veblen's institutional evolution. In order to achieve the general objective, we developed an analytical framework that presents the fundamental characteristics of the Evolutionary Economic Theory. The specific objective is investigate the fundamental characteristics of an Evolutionary Economic Theory and a form of presentation as an analytical framework that is to evaluate a Veblen’s Theory and the role of the individual in it. To understand what the fundamental elements of an Evolutionary Economic Theory are it is necessary to clarify what an evolutionary ontology is. According to Dopfer and Potts (2008, 2004), an ontology serves as a foundation for an Evolutionary Economic Theory and is made up of scientific claims about a fundamental nature of reality. As an alternative to evolutionary ontology, Dopfer and Potts (2008; 2004) propose the Evolutionary Realism. After defining the evolutionary ontology, we starts with the construction of the fundamental characteristics of Evolutionary Economic Theory that are in conformity with Evolutionary Realism. In order to do that we use the works of Witt (2014), Metcalfe (1998), Lawson (2003) and Potts (2003). From the union these four authors combined with an evolutionary ontological orientation, we concluded that four elements fundamental to an Evolutionary Economic Theory are variation, selection, replication and adaptation. These elements are fundamental characteristics of the Evolutionary Economic Theory and connect in the analysis framework through the Witt’s (2014) modalities. To begin this evaluation it is necessary to clarify who the population and the unit of selection are. This structure is a tool for analysis the evolutionary theory of Veblen. This method of evaluating the individual's role applied in a selection of Veblen's writings leads to the conclusion that through his instincts, habits, and institutions, the Veblen’s individual has characteristics of variation, selection, adaptation and replication. In institutional evolution, it has a multiple role, sometimes acting as an agent through its instincts and habits, or else it takes a more passive stance, where it is shaped by the institutional environment. The multiple role of the individual in Veblen can be conceived scientifically and theoretically, when we incorporates in the theoretical structure the explanation of type (iii). This kind of explanation makes it possible to conceive the history of adaptive processes that are also interactive in which selection, adaptation and replication are imperfect, opening the way for the generation of new variation. An evolutionary ontology allows creating scientific theories in these molds.

Abstract:
The thesis demonstrates that three pre-keynesians theories of financial instability can be found in Marx, Veblen and Hawtrey. For each of these three authors, the argument is that the theoretical frame displayed allows him question the role of finance in the economic dynamic. Then, analysis of their main writings shows that theories of financial instability can be infered from them. In chapter I, the marxian theory of financial markets is reconstituted paving the way to the demonstration of the central role played by finance in the explanation of the business cycle in Marx’s theory in Chapter 2. In Chapter III, we show what elements in Veblen’s theory constitutes a theory of finance capitalism. Then, the discussion in Chapter IV shows how it a theory of financial instability. In Chapter V is displayed a representation of of Hawtrey’s macro-model. Chapter VI highlights the conditions under which credit is unstable in his theory. Chapter VII shows the links between the three authors’ theories and the economic facts that nurtured their thinking. It shows that their theories of financial instability are an explanation, a representation et a project of regulation of financial capitalism

Abstract:
The Theory of the Leisure Class made Veblen famous for his theory of consumption as a channel of social competition. The Institutionalists praised and used his notion of intangible property. This article will show that Veblen worked his way to the theory of consumption and property from the concept of labor. Veblen drew on a longstanding American literature that insisted on the dignity of labor and warned against its decline. But he was also familiar with the latest trends of German, Italian and French socialism in ways few Americans were at the time. This article will describe Veblen’s explorations of American and European sources, while emphasizing his reliance on authors (such as the Italian criminologist Antonio Ferri), whose influence on Veblen has been so far neglected.

Abstract:
Consumption is defined as the use of goods and services produced in order to meet the needs and demands. However, the goods and services consumed are not only indicator of purchase power but also social status. At this point, the aim of conspicuous consumption comes to the fore. Conspicuous consumption for social status was first discussed by Thorstein Veblen in his book, The Theory of The Leisure Class, in 1899. According to Veblen, this kind of consumption is carried out in order to raise the social status by the upper social class and other classes trying to be similar to them rather than to the need. The views of Veblen are important when considered today's consumer society and constitute an important point of reference for gaining an insight into the world of over-consumption, especially for the younger generations. For this reason, in our study, we aim to conduct a questionnaire for Kırklareli University students in order to understand how the concept of conspicuous consumption has acquired dimension for university students. As a result of the study, it will be tried to determine whether the students have conspicuous consumption; which factors are affected if the students turn to conspicuous consumption and whether the students have loaded symbolic meanings to the commodities they purchased.

Clothing consumption practice and its impact on the transformation of “public space”. Vía primavera, El Poblado, Medellín. Conference topics and scale: Urban form and social use of space Via Primavera is a fashion district in El Poblado neighborhood that has become a public referent of city life in Medellin – Colombia; a space that is shown as inclusive and accessible to all types of collectives. This paper is part of a research which purpose is to understand the connection between the public space with its moral and physical organization and the exclusion processes that the clothing conspicuous consumption generates in Via Primavera. The analysis of this connection is subjected to a mutual play between prior structure and agency and the crystallization, or not, of its existence through an interrelation. In the same way, a concern about the city models resumed in the national and local development plans, and its relevance as the ones that set the social and economic ideal of public spaces arises. And ideal that contradicts with practice, where exclusion processes through consumption practices bring a tension in what is supposed to be public; breaking with its inclusive and collective character. Abstract:
Hydantoin is a nonaromatic five-membered heterocycle, which is considered a valuable, privileged scaffold in medicinal chemistry. The importance of the hydantoin scaffold in drug dis-covery has been reinforced by several medicines in clinical use, such as anticonvulsants (phenyto-in), antibiotics (nitrofurantoin), anticancer drugs (enzalutamide) and keratolytics (allantoin). To design new potentially pharmacologically active compounds, six spirohydantoin derivatives were synthetized and fully characterized by determination of the melting points, elemental analysis, FT-IR, 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopic methods. Effects of the substituents on the shift of the absorp-tion maxima of synthetized compounds were analyzed using the linear solvatation energy relation-ship, while the influence of the chemical structure on the pharmacokinetically relevant properties of the investigated spirohydantoin derivatives was evaluated using the Lipinski’s rule of five, Veber, Egan and Ghose’s empirical criteria, as well as different in silico methods. In order of de-tailed analysis of the potential pharmacological activity of the synthesized spirohydantoins, their potential pharmacological properties were correlated with the corresponding solvent effects.

Full text
Abstract:
Interest in roller-compacted concrete (RCC) pavement has been increasing because of its low initial cost, construction efficiency, and ability to open to traffic early. Current RCC mixture design methods do not directly consider the aggregate source or optimal cement content. An experimental testing plan was developed to batch RCC mixtures with several aggregate sources, gradations, paste contents, and water-cement (w/c) ratios. Each aggregate blend was compacted in order to determine the intergranular volume of voids. The volume of cement paste was varied to underfill, equifill, and overfill the compacted aggregate voids. Green properties (green strength, green modulus, and softening modulus) were measured on the lab compacted specimens to assess the fresh RCC capacity, stability, and plasticity. Green and hardened properties were then related to the RCC mixture volumetric parameters. Green properties were sensitive to aggregate type and gradation, ratio of voids filled by paste, w/c ratio, and total paste content, which all affected the mixes adhesion and shear resistance. In most cases, high cement contents did not improve green or hardened properties. RCC mixtures containing crushed aggregates achieved maximum green strength and stability with underfilled voids, while RCC with rounded aggregates required overfilling the voids. Workability (Vebe time) measurements were not sensitive unless voids were overfilled and not highly sensitive to w/c ratio.
