Abstract:
The vibrational density of states (VDOS) of solids in the low-energy regime controls the thermal and transport properties of materials, such as heat capacity, heat conduction, free energy and entropy. In α-Cristobalite, the low-frequency part of vibration density of states (VDOS) has many common features with the Boson peak in silica glass of matched densities. Recent theoretical work reported that anharmonic phonon–phonon interactions were critical for the low-frequency part of VDOS in α-Cristobalite. Therefore, it is urgent to identify the role of different anharmonic interactions from first principles. In this paper, we focus on the main peak of the low-frequency part of VDOS in α-Cristobalite. Calculated by our own developed codes and first principles, we find that the quartic anharmonic interaction can increase the frequency of the peak, while the cubic anharmonic can reduce the frequency and change the shape of the peak. Meanwhile, the anharmonic interactions are critical for the temperature effect. Therefore, we calculated the temperature-dependent property of the peak. We find that the frequency of the peak is directly proportional to the temperature. The atomic displacement patterns of different temperatures also confirm the above conclusion. All our calculations converged well. Moreover, our basic results agree well with other published results. Finally, we highlight that our codes offer a general and reliable way to calculate the VDOS with temperature.

Abstract:
Molecular dynamics simulations show that vibrational modes in glassy SiO2 are affected differently by density-induced changes to the structural order compared with those induced by specific cationic substitutions (Al, P, Na). Using standard measures of local and midrange positional order, we find that P disrupts network order in terms of second nearest neighbours, but preserves local order. In contrast, Al decreases local order while maintaining network order. Increased density preserves structural correlations in the network although the length scale shrinks. The complex short-range and long-range structural trends in these modified glasses coincide with changes in distinct regions in the vibrational density of states (VDOS). This suggests that a greater role for VDOS as a tool to link simulation and experiment in amorphous materials.

Abstract:
Based on nonequilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD) and nonequilibrium Green’s function simulations, the interfacial thermal conductance (ITC) of graphene/h-BN in-plane heterostructures with near-interface defects (monovacancy defects, 585 and f5f7 double-vacancy defects) is studied. Compared to pristine graphene/h-BN, all near-interface defects reduce the ITC of graphene/h-BN. However, differences in defective structures and the wrinkles induced by the defects cause significant discrepancies in heat transfer for defective graphene/h-BN. The stronger phonon scattering and phonon localization caused by the wider cross-section in defects and the larger wrinkles result in the double-vacancy defects having stronger energy hindrance effects than the monovacancy defects. In addition, the approximate cross-sections and wrinkles induced by the 585 and f5f7 double-vacancy defects provide approximate heat hindrance capability. The phonon transmission and vibrational density of states (VDOS) further confirm the above results. The double-vacancy defects in the near-interface region have lower low-frequency phonon transmission and VDOS values than the monovacancy defects, while the 585 and f5f7 double-vacancy defects have similar low-frequency phonon transmission and VDOS values at the near-interface region. This study provides physical insight into the thermal transport mechanisms in graphene/h-BN in-plane heterostructures with near-interface defects and provides design guidelines for related devices.

Abstract:
This study investigated the functionalization and layer number effects on interfacial thermal conductivity (ITC) of graphene nanocomposites through molecular dynamics simulation. The functional groups grafted to the graphene surface were carboxyl and amine groups. The ITC between the graphene and the surrounding epoxy matrix was examined, and the effects of the functional groups and layer number on ITC were characterized through vibrational density of states (VDOS). It was revealed that the VDOS mismatch between the epoxy and the outermost layer of graphene was reduced by the functional groups. Thus, the functional groups can effectively improve the ITC between the graphene and epoxy matrix. Moreover, when the layer number of graphene increases, the ITC in nanocomposites increases correspondingly. This is attributed to the fact that the inner layers of graphene may interact with the epoxy matrix and contribute the interatomistic energy in the interface.

Abstract:
The microscopic diffusion and the low frequency density of states (VDOS) of PIM-EA-TB(CH3) are investigated by inelastic and quasi-elastic neutron scattering where also the demethylated counterpart of PIM-EA-TB(H2) is considered. These intrinsic microporous polymers are characterized by large BET surface area values of several hundred m2/g and pore sizes between 0.5 and 2 nm. Detailed comparison is made to the archetype of polymers of intrinsic microporosity, PIM-1, and polynorbornenes also bearing a microporosity. Due to the wavelength of neutrons, the diffusion and vibrations can be addressed on microscopic length and time scales. From the inelastic neutron scattering experiments the low frequency density of states (VDOS) is estimated which shows excess contributions to the Debye-type VDOS known as Boson peak. It was found that the maximum frequency of the Boson peak decreases with increasing microporosity characterized by the BET surface area. However, besides the BET surface area, additional factors such as the backbone stiffness govern the maximum frequency of the Boson peak. Further the mean squared displacement related to microscopic motions was estimated from elastic fixed window scans. At temperatures above 175 K, the mean squared displacement PIM-EA-TB(CH3) is higher than that for the demethylated counterpart PIM-EA-TB(H2). The additional contribution found for PIM-EA-TB(CH3) is ascribed to the rotation of the methyl group in this polymer because the only difference between the two structures is that PIM-EA-TB(CH3) has methyl groups where PIM-EA-TB(H2) has none. A detailed comparison of the molecular dynamics is also made to that of PIM-1 and the microporous polynorbornene PTCNSi1. The manuscript focuses on the importance of vibrations and the localized molecular mobility characterized by the microscopic diffusion on the gas transport in polymeric separation membranes. In the frame of the random gate model localized fluctuations can open or close bottlenecks between pores to enable the diffusion of gas molecules.

Abstract:
Bredigite with the composition Ca7MgSi4O16 (Ca7MgSi4O16-Bre) has been synthesized by a solid-state reaction method at 1.2 GPa and 1373 K for 7 days, and its structure has been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction data. Following a relevant genealogy analysis in the literature, we have refined the structure into two space groups, Pnnm and Pnn2, and found that Ca7MgSi4O16-Bre belongs to the space group Pnnm, which can be essentially derived from the space group Pnn2 via an atomic coordinate transformation (with an average deviation of 0.039 Å only). Furthermore, some thermodynamic properties of the Ca7MgSi4O16-Bre have been obtained in this study. Using first-principles simulations based on density functional theory, the isothermal bulk modulus has been determined as 90.6(4) GPa with a pressure derivative of 5.7(1). Using density functional perturbation technique, the phonon dispersions and vibrational density of the states (VDoS) have been calculated. The VDoS has been combined with a quasi-harmonic approximation to compute the isobaric heat capacity (Cp) and standard vibrational entropy (S2980), yielding Cp = 8.22(2) × 102 − 3.76(6) × 103T−0.5 − 1.384(4) × 107T−2 + 1.61(8) × 109T−3 J mol−1 K−1 for the T range of 298-1000 K and S2980 = 534.1 (22) J mol−1 K−1.

Abstract:
Classical molecular-dynamics simulations have been performed to examine the interplay between ubiquitin and its hydration-water sub-layers, chiefly from a vibrational-mode and IR viewpoint—where we analyse individual sub-layers characteristics. The vibrational Density of States (VDOS) revealed that the first solvation sub-shell indicates a confined character therein. For layers of increasing distance from the surface, the adoption of greater bulk-like spectral behaviour was evident, suggesting that vibrational harmonisation to bulk occurs within 6–7 Å of the surface.

Abstract:
This wide-ranging study explored various parameters of visual search in relation to computer screen displays. Its ultimate goal was to help identify factors which could result in improvements in commercially available displays within the 'real world’. Those improvements are generally reflected in suggestions for enhancing efficiency of locatabolity of information through an acknowledgement of the visual and cognitive factors involved. The thesis commenced by introducing an ergonomics approach to the presentation of information on VDUs. Memory load and attention were discussed. In the second chapter, literature on general and theoretical aspects of visual search (with particular regard for VDUs) was reviewed. As an experimental starting point, three studies were conducted involving locating a target within arrays of varying configurations. A model concerning visual lobes was proposed. Two text-editing studies were then detailed showing superior user performances where conspicuity and the potential for peripheral vision are enhanced. Relevant eye movement data was combined with a keystroke analysis derived from an automated protocol analyser. Results of a further search task showed icons to be more quickly located within an array than textual material. Precise scan paths were then recorded and analyses suggested greater systematicity of search strategies for complex items. This led on to a relatively 'pure' search study involving materials of varying spatial frequencies. Results were discussed in terms of verbal material generally being of higher spatial frequencies and how the ease of resolution and greater cues available in peripheral vision can result in items being accessed more directly. In the final (relatively applied) study, differences in eye movement indices were found across various fonts used. One main conclusion was that eye movement monitoring was a valuable technique within the visual search/VDU research area in illuminating precise details of performance which otherwise, at best, could only be inferred.

Abstract:
Annual reports are by many considered to be companies primary way to inform their world where the CEO's words are read most carefully by shareholders. The purpose of this paper is to examine the design of the CEO's words in annual reports in light of the financial crisis in 2008. The study seeking explanations for change, similarities and differences in the various texts based on three themes which are results, future and confidence. In this qualitative study five CEO's words are explored by means of a discourse analysis, all from large Swedish industrial companies listed on the Stockholm Stock Exchange. Some of the results shown is that the CEO tends to talk about the company's results in a self-serving manner and CEO speaks more aboutm the results before than after the crisis. As for the theme of the future is different content in various periods. One clear difference between the years examined, is that the way to talk about confidence changed and that this increased after the crisis.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Formal verification of software has become a powerful tool for creating software systems and proving their correctness. While such systems provide strong guarantees about their behavior, they frequently exhibit poor performance relative to their unverified counterparts. Verified file systems are not excepted, and their poor performance limits their utility. These limitations, however, are not intrinsic to verification techniques, but are the result of designing for proofs, not performance. This thesis proposes a design for large files and in-memory caches that are amenable both to a high-performance implementation and proofs of correctness. It then describes their usage in VDFS, a verified high-performance file system with deferred durability guarantees. The evaluation of VDFS' performance shows that these additions measurably improve performance over previous verified file systems, and make VDFS competitive with unverified file system implementations. This thesis contributes implementation techniques for large files and in-memory caches that can be applied to increase performance of verified systems..

Background: Debates regarding CEO's compensation level became a hot topic in Sweden during the 21st century, when audits and information regarding compensation to Swedish business leaders came true. The CEO's compensation remains valid after several decades of research. Purpose: The purpose of the study is to investigate how the overall compensation level of Swedish CEOs is influenced by the Board's monitoring and resource role, and taking into account the rate of change in the company's external environment. Method: We have applied a quantitative method with a deductible approach. The study's tests are made from data of 250 companies distributed on Large, Mid and SmallCap in years 2010-2012. Result: The monitoring role of the Board has a negative effect, while the Board's resource-giving role has a positive effect on total compensation to the CEO. The study failed to demonstrate that the moderating variable, sales growth, affected total compensation to the CEO

Abstract:
Abstract The cubic silicon carbide (3C-SiC) has been considered as a candidate structural material for several types of advanced nuclear reactors. The effects of cascade collision on thermal conductivity in symmetrical tilt grain boundary (GB) were studied by Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The thermal conductivity of 3C-SiC at Σ5(210)[001] GB was calculated using non-equilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD) methods. A relatively small simulation unit was used to analyze the effect of different energies of incident PKA (primary knock-on atoms) on the thermal conductivity of 3C-SiC and to compare the results with perfect structure GB system. Finally, the vibrational density of states (VDOS) of atoms in the GB region was calculated to analyze the phonon mismatch at the interface. Calculations show that cascade collisions generated by energetic atoms will result in a decrease in thermal conductivity of the Σ5(210) GB system, but the effect varies in different regions, with a sharp decrease in thermal conductivity and an increase in thermal resistance for the intracrystalline region, while the magnitude of change in either thermal resistance or thermal conductivity is not significant in the GB region. Irradiated model shows a higher GB energy compared to the unirradiated model. For all irradiated models, lattice defects have a significant effect on the thermal conductivity of the GB system, depending on the spatial structure of the GBs. the results of the VDOS analysis suggest that an increase in the degree of atomic lattice mismatch near the interface is responsible for a further increase in the thermal resistance of the irradiated GB system.

Abstract:
Heat conduction of double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs) with intertube additional carbon atoms was investigated using molecular dynamics (MD) simulation method. The interaction between carbon atoms was modeled using the Adaptive Intermolecular Reactive Empirical Bond Order (AIREBO) Potential. The related phonon density of states (DOS) was analyzed to help explain the heat conduction mechanism. It is indicated that intertube additional atoms of DWCNT will weaken the heat conduction along the axis. The addition of intertube atoms, which are covalently bonded to the inner and outer tubes, leads to localized structural deformation, which acting as a phonon barrier for ballistic heat transport. In addition, the intertube atoms become the new centers of phonon scattering and reduce VDOS. The deformation is the primary reason for the reduction of thermal conductivity. With the increasing number of additional atoms, the thermal conductivity of DWCNTs with atoms added at the same cross section drops sharply than that added along the tube axis, because the former addition causes more serious local deformation. Under the situation of addition at the cross section, if the number of intertube atoms is beyond a critical value, the distribution of these atoms seems to have little influences on the heat conduction in the tube.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper describes the vaneless diffuser rotating stall (VDRS) development and cell merging phenomena. A centrifugal compressor’s lifespan may be limited by flow instabilities occurring in off-design operation. One such instability is the VDRS, which generates oscillating, asymmetrical flow fields in the diffuser and, thus, undesired forces acting on the rotor. Understanding and prevention of VDRS behavior is crucial for achieving safe and undisturbed compressor operation. Experimental measurements of centrifugal compressors operating under the influence of VDRS have been presented. Two different approaches were used for the identification of VDRS: pressure measurements and 2D PIV. Frequency analysis based on spectral maps and cell development processes were investigated. The presented results showed that mass flow rate has an impact on the rotating frequency of both the entire structure and single cells. Additionally, it affects radial cell size, which grows with compressor throttling and ultimately reaches the length of the diffuser. During the experiments, the cell merging phenomenon was observed which has not been widely described in the literature. The results presented in this paper allow better understanding of vaneless diffuser rotating stall behavior. The phenomenon of the change of cell size and frequency could be very important for machine fatigue. Cell merging could also have an impact on the machine’s vibrations and flow stability. Since it is believed that VDRS is one of the factors inducing surge, its understanding and prevention may have positive influence on surge margins.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper presents the universal method of assessing the Vaneless Diffuser Rotating Stall (VDRS) cells’ size with the use of the Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) technique. Two different cell dimensions’ definitions were introduced: Radial Cell Size (RCS) and Circumferential Cell Size (CCS). The step-by-step instructions for the calculation of both cell sizes are provided. Also, potential issues that readers may encounter while calculating the VDRS cell’s size are presented followed by examples of their solutions. The presented method for cell size assessment is universal and can be used not only with PIV measurements but with any technique allowing flow field reconstruction inside the diffuser or in numerical research. Such an analysis provides information regarding the most crucial zones inside the diffuser for anti-VDRS systems. Based on the results it is possible to increase the efficiency and applicability of the already developed and future VDRS prevention systems. Additionally, this method allows further understanding of the VDRS development by means of the cell growth study. Results of such an analysis may be used to improve compressor design resulting in better performance and wider operation range.

Abstract:
This paper focuses on the use of vehicle dynamics control systems (VDCS) to mitigate vehicle collisions in case of offset frontal vehicle-to-barrier crash scenario. A unique six-Degree-of-Freedom (6-DOF) vehicle dynamics/crash mathematical model is developed and analysed in this paper. The model is used to define the vehicle body crash parameters by integrating a vehicle dynamics model with a vehicle front-end structure model. In this model, the anti-lock braking system (ABS) and the active suspension control system (ASC) are co-simulated with the full car vehicle dynamics model and integrated with the front-end structure. The associated equations of motion of the model are developed and solved numerically. In this study, different crash scenarios are simulated with different cases of VDCS to investigate their influences on the vehicle collision improvement. ABS, ASC, and anti-pitch control (APC) systems as well as an under pitch control (UPC) technique are applied in this paper, and their results are compared with free rolling crash scenarios. This study shows that the vehicle dynamics/crash response is captured and analysed quickly and accurately. Furthermore, it is shown that the VDCS affect the crash characteristics positively.

Abstract:
Working on visual display units (VDUs) for prolonged periods of time leads to peculiar effects on physical and cognitive functioning of the users. COVID-19 pandemic brought the world to a point where all the work activities and interactions became dependent on various types of VDUs. The teaching-learning process switched to virtual classrooms bringing about a shift in the knowledge exchange scenario across the globe. An optimisation of conditions for VDU usage needs to be done in order to minimise the long term effects and reduce discomforts while using any such technology based media. The study focuses on a real time comprehensive analysis of VDU usage related musculoskeletal disorders, particularly computer vision syndrome and postural problems. The exposure assessment in both physical and cognitive domains provides the basis for optimisation of conditions for VDU usage.

Abstract:
This paper aims to improve vehicle crashworthiness using vehicle dynamics control systems (VDCS) integrated with an extendable front-end structure (extendable bumper). The work carried out in this paper includes developing and analyzing a new vehicle dynamics/crash mathematical model and a multi-body occupant mathematical model in case of vehicle-to-vehicle full frontal impact. The first model integrates a vehicle dynamics model with the vehicle’s front-end structure to define the vehicle body crash kinematic parameters. In this model, the anti-lock braking system (ABS) and the active suspension control system (ASC) are co-simulated, and its associated equations of motion are developed and solved numerically. The second model is used to capture the occupant kinematics during full frontal collision. The simulations show considerable improvements using VDCS with and without the extendable bumper (EB), which produces additional significant improvements for both vehicle body acceleration and intrusion.
