Abstract: In this work we present a study on the growth of InP/InP with the Vacuum Chemical Epitaxy (VCE) technique. The VCE system used for this work was the one at Device Research Laboratory/DFA-UNICAMP. The grown material was mainly characterized by Hall effect and photoluminescence; these results were compared with those available in the literature for other vapor-phase epitaxial systems. We also describe here the modifications made to the VCE system in order to improve the utilization of PH3 as P source and the material quality. Together with this study, the automation of the system was carried out, with the use of IBM PC-XT type micro-computer

Full textIn a world that is moving faster and faster, a company’s ability to align to market changes is becoming a major competitive factor. Forecasting enables companies to predict what lies ahead, e.g. trend shifts or market turns, and makes it possible to plan for it. But looking into the future is never an easy task.
“Prediction is very difficult, especially if it’s about the future.” (Niels Bohr, 1885-1962)
However, progress in the field of forecasting has shown that it is possible for companies to improve on forecasting practices. This master thesis looks at the sales forecasting practices in MNCs primarily operating in emerging and developing countries. We examine the whole process of sales forecasting, also known as forecasting management, in order to develop a comprehensive model for forecasting in this type of companies. The research is based on a single case study, which is then later generalized into broader conclusions.
The conclusion of this master thesis is that forecasting is a four-step exercise. The four stages we have identified are: Knowledge creation, knowledge transformation, knowledge use and feedback. In the course of these four stages a company’s sales forecast is developed, changed and used. By understanding how each stage works and what to focus on, companies will be able to improve their forecasting practices.

Full textThe research proposes to introduce the concept of high cost-of-living from customers’ point of view into managementscience. In order to do this, the research first proposes to define the concept of high cost of from customers’ point of viewand to identify its content. Secondly, the research focuses on the antecedents of the concept and its consequences onconsumers' purchasing behavior. The empirical approach is based on a Mixed Methods Research. This is a research method that involves combining boththe elements of a quantitative and qualitative approach in order to understand the high cost-of-living from customers’point of view. Two main empirical studies have been carried out: (1) a qualitative exploratory study composed of severalmethods of data collection (semi-directive interviews, netnography, survey at the exit of a supermarket) and (2) aquantitative confirmatory study with a sample of 700 residents of Réunion Island. The qualitative study allows (1) to determine the causes of this high cost-of-living from customers’ point of view, (2) todefine the concept and to structure its content and (3) to analyze the consequences of this evaluation on consumerpurchasing behavior. From the results of the qualitative study and the literature review, a series of assumptions and themodel of research are formulated. The assumptions and the model are tested during the quantitative study. The quantitative study allows (1) to validate a measuring instrument of evaluation of the high cost-of-living, (2) todetermine the influence of this evaluation on consumer buying behavior, and (3) to emphasize the moderating role ofPPA.The main contributions of this research are the conceptualization of the high cost of living from customers’ point of viewand the description of the consequences of this evaluation on consumer

In spite of their shared situation these women presented varied movements concerning : - the subject matt. Er: each speaker, telling her story put into play several themes and presented different points of view about these themes. - the genre : starting from the genre they were asked for, tell about your life”, the interviewed women entered into different concrete genres that articulated the narration with argumentative movements that mixed in explanatoruy, evaluative, or justifying discourse. The narrative genre took on different features, ranging from pure narrative to indeterminate generic narrative or imaginary (fictitious) narrative. - the worlds : in telling about her personal life, each woman alternated (in relation to the theme in question) belween specific and generic. Statemenis, and discourse about “F’. ‘we’ they”, or the French third person singular “on”. Through these different movements, each woman’s discourse presented both features shared with die others and a discourse and mode of reaction that differed, giving each woman particular subj ect status. Thus, in the act of puting into words, the speaker both resembles others and bas her own "discursive strategy. ”

Full textEnergy storage system such as supercapacitors are widely used in high power applications. However, due to single cell voltage limitation, an energy storage system (module) is often employed. It contains a chain structure of identical elements and ensures voltage adaptation to the corresponding application requirements. Energy management systems are associated to energy storage systems in order to assure user and equipment security. Their main role is to monitor and control energy storage systems elements continuously. The work presented aims to enhance the lifetime of energy storage systems. It relies on establishing balancing circuits on the terminals of the storage system elements. These control circuits are energy management system devices. Thus, various control approaches are discussed, analyzed and compared. They aim to estimate the supercapacitor's state of health. In addition, a new approach of balancing circuits is proposed. It is based on estimating the level of degradation of the elements. Thus, It allows aging speed equalization between module elements and storage system lifetime maximization. Some main results of the work could be generalized to batteries

Full textContext : The evolution of practices in alcohol use disorder field, following the model of patient-centered care, lets revisit the concept of remission for a better consideration of the patient's point of view, participating predominantly in the definition of therapeutic objectives and in their assessment. Yet few of these subjective criteria of the evaluation of patient outcomes have actually included the patient in their development. Until recently, quality of life instruments the most used among patients with alcohol use disorder were generic ones, and their development and particularly generation of items did not involve patients, but rather experts and were based on existing literature. Methods : we conducted a systematic literature review identifying randomized clinical trials testing an intervention in alcohol-dependent patients, and measuring its effectiveness on quality of life. We have listed the dimensions explored in the existing instruments. It has been shown that these instruments did not optimally explore the impact of alcohol dependence on quality of life in this population. On this, we have developed a scale specific for patients with alcohol use disorder, following the recommendations of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on the development of "Patient-Reported Outcomes", namely involving patients extensively. We used the method of focus groups conducted in parallel in France and Great Britain with 38 patients with alcohol use disorder. These groups allowed the generation of a pool of items, secondarily tested by individual cognitive interviews with 31 patients, resulting in the final scale "Alcohol Quality of Life Scale" (AQoLS). We then validated the AQoLS scale on a sample of 285 French patients with alcoho use disorder, recruited from randomly selected centers in France. Results: The scale has 34 items developed, distributed in seven dimensions: social relationships, activities, living conditions, looking after self, negative emotions, sleep and loss of control. The validation study confirmed six of the seven dimensions, with a slightly different distribution of the items. The "looking after self" dimension disappeared in favor of a new dimension of self-esteem. Control and self-esteem dimensions are innovative in a health-related quality of life instrument in adults. The scale showed good psychometric properties, with good internal consistency (Cronbach = 0.96), and a moderate correlation with sub-scores of the SF-36 and EQ-5D. A qualitative complementary work could illustrate the links between the different affected areas, including the proximity in patients’ perception between self-esteem, loss of control and cognitive impairment. Conclusion : The move towards a model of patient-centered care allows considering a different approach of remission and to build and validate a measure of health-related quality of life close to the concerns of patients with a alcohol use disorder, AQoLS scale. Two innovative dimensions were attached to this concept: loss of control from the patient's perspective, and self-esteem

Full text"autobiography and romantic", "present instants of happiness" and "the tragedy of the human condition" : are the three parts which are developped in this research. In the first part, we used the "thematic method" to analyse the events wich constructed the literary work and divulged through the part of autobiography which is included in the narrative structure of the work. The three axes which nourished the second part are : the travels, the remembrance, the memory and the dream. By means of the writing itself alexandre vialatte triumphed over the du ness of the daily life. Making use of these instants, he enjoyed himself with these instants of happiness. But is the tragedy of the human condition going to annihilate all these fantasies? a question such as this we are going to ask in the third part by using the two themes of labyrinth and of the death
Flores-Junior, Olimar. "Le cynisme ancien : vie kata phusin ou vie kat'euteleian?" Thesis, Paris 4, 2013. http://www.theses.fr/2013PA040053.
Full textCynicism is a philosophical movement which started in Greece in the 4th century B.C. around the figure of Diogenes of Sinope. Modern interpreters often understand this movement as the expression of a radical naturalism, a doctrine founded on a drastic refusal of all the values of civilized life and consequently defined as a “crusade against civilization” or as an “anti-promethean current”, identifying in the “civilizing fire” the very origin of all the troubles, vices and misfortunes that men have to cope with. Accordingly, Cynic ethics would advocate a “return to nature” or to a life “according to nature” (kata phusin), guided by the idea of animality and of primitivism, that is to say a life modeled on animal behavior or on the modus vivendi of the primitive men. The present thesis aims at questionning this widely spread interpretation of cynicism on the basis of an analysis of the texts transmitted by Antiquity. The alternative interpretation that we offer rests on the reading of two major texts: the Sixth Discourse by Dio Chrysostomus and the dialogue The Cynic transmitted under the authority of Lucian of Samosate, along with some other sources, like the sixth book of Lives and opinions of eminent philosophers written by Diogenes Laertius and the Letters attributed to Diogenes of Sinope and to Crates of Thebes. It redefines Cynic philosophy as the quest for a life “according to easiness” (kat’ euteleian) and — in modern terminology — as a radical form of pragmatism, within which dualisms – notably the one between nomos and phusis – tend to be abolished in the name of a morality conditioned by the actual circumstances of individual life

Full textOur after industrial society of information is characterised by the market globalization, the development of information and communication technologies, and the rise of tertiary activities. In this context, remote work, namely telework, appears into organizations. Our research objective is to evaluate its impact of telework on the meaning of work and on the relations between work life and out of work life. We compare meaning of work dimensions and the exchanges between the domains of life between teleworkers and classic workers samples in two organizations, with different juridical statute. Then, we realise a more detailed analyse where the categories of telework are distinguished. According to the results, relations between work life and out of work life are influenced by the type of work practised. Traditional workers separate the domains of life, even though, teleworkers establish resources exchanges between their professional and private life into France Telecom Group. Telecommuting influences too the work social representation. Work isn’t conceivable without the notion of constraint among types of teleworkers. Our research proves how the model of activities system clarifies the mechanisms, used by subjects, to manage their work life and their out of work life. Structural theory of work social representation contributes to identify the work social representation, according to the category of worker practised and the type of organization studied. Data collection authorizes us to draw up a positive statement on telework in these two organizations. Other practical implications and news perspectives are also proposed

Full textIn this PhD thesis we propose a fair tarification model for a mixed life-insurance contract, that is to say for a contract ensuring both the case of life and the case of death. We deal with an incomplete market and a stochastic mortality. We also adress the case of several contracts, optimizing the investments portfolio and majorizing the ruin probability for a portfolio of insured. In the non-life reinsurance setting, two reserve evaluation methods are elaborated. In the first one we use a model without any risk exposure measurement, which is unknown in practice. In the second one, we use Bayesian hierachical models based on stochastic differential equations in random media. For both life-insurance and non-life reinsurance, the results are illustrated by simulations. Some of them are based on real data

Full textBetween 1976 and 1979, Michel Foucault elaborates the concept of "biopower", which indicates the moment when, around the 18th century, life itself - the individuals and the populations - becomes part of the mechanisms of power and an essential stake in politics. At the beginning of the eighties, Foucault's work seems to branch out into a reflection about ethics. Rather than a rupture, one can see appearing a fundamental quadrilateral of concepts, which joins together truth, power, subject and life. Among those concepts, the one which has interested Foucault least is the one of life. In order to elaborate it, we've taken here two ways: a renewal of an ontological mode of thought, in order to clarify the relationship between life and subjectivity and an explanation of the function of sciences in biopower necessitating a critique of epistemology. Our aim is to question the involvement of life in politics. In each case, the assumption in play is that life cannot be conceived separately from subjectivity

Full textThe quality of spirits is a parameter related to the composition of volatile aroma compounds. This composition results from the combined production process of raw material extraction, subsequent fermentation, distillation and, in many cases, ageing.Distillation is a very old and the most important industrial separation technology. However, in spirits production, this operation relies essentially on empirical knowledge. The aim of this PhD was to contribute to a better understanding of the volatile aroma compounds behaviour in spirits distillation and to provide a scientific basis for the process through computer simulation. The study was focused on Armagnac and Calvados production by continuous multistage distillation. The simulation modules were built using the software ProSimPlus®. The first part of this research was dedicated to the acquisition of vapor-liquid equilibrium data of the volatile aroma compounds in ethanol-water solutions, in order to estimate the binary interaction parameters of the NRTL model.Three complementary approaches of data acquisition were used: literature compilation, experimental measurements and predictions with UNIFAC and COSMO models.According to their relative volatilities with respect to ethanol and water, the volatile aroma compounds can be classified in three groups: light compounds, intermediary compounds and heavy compounds. The second part of this research dealt with the creation and validation of simulation modules, by using reconciled experimental data from the distillation units. The results prove that simulation is a powerful tool in spirits distillation. The simulation data enables a more precise classification of the intermediary compounds in three categories, by considering their composition profiles in the distillation column and their recovery ratios from feed to distillate. Finally, the analysis of some operating parameters, including ethanol concentration in the distillate as well as tails extractions, demonstrates that the distillate composition can be modified by virtue of a selective separation of intermediary and heavy compounds with respect to ethanol

Full textThe possibility to conceive the facticity, not as a dimension where the facts stood at the "expectation" of being grasped by an act of intellection that would constitute them, but as the mouvement of the act of intellection itself ; this possibility, already present in Husserl, that looks upon the facts as having a significant intention, has been linked, by Heidegger, to the intellection of the being in general. This possibility makes the human actions to be an articulation of the being’s understanding. However, this understanding, going thoroughly into the forgetfulness of the being, makes at the same time the obscureness of it’s own major difficulty – how can one shows the ontological difference itself ? Our aim, beyond the attempt to reduce or to try to develop a number of topics that would interfere with the primacy of this ontological difference, is to introduce "life" as the most original dimension, as the condition for all others, from where the light could expand itself in a way that the true reasons of the phenomenological and ontological difficulties would became apparent

Full textIn the first part, to improve our knowledge of the members of this parliament and the world they lived in, we have studied their cultural, economic and family background, as well as their office and their work. Judging from the documents we have been able to study, the members chose this particular office not because of the financial advantages they might obtain from it, but mainly for the prestige that came along with it. Indeed not anybody could accede to this station, and informal barriers as well as inviaible bridges were set up to maintain a certain level of cooptation, all the more so as the office thus acquired and fulfilled allowed the member to get acceed to nobility. The parliament is therefore socially quite homogeneous, all the more as it is strongly endogamous. It emerges that this group had a strengthh and coherence that must have helped it in its ambitions. That is why the second part consists of an appraisal of the relations between the compagnie and the various agents of power -both local and national-, to figure out their actual authority, and an analysis of the compagnie's specific functions. It appears that from the point of view of the royal administration, the parliament should have had no more than the rank of a departmental court accompanied with limited powers to make regional regulations and an optional counselling function. Yet, this is not what its members expected their functions to be. This explains why they developped "democratic" theories which undermined the french monarchic organisation but at the same time eroded the parliament's own legitimacy. Neither the members of the parliament nor their citizens seem to have been aware of this process which resulted in an escalation of affairs, each leading to more and more contestation and ending in the demand for the meeting of the states general. To conclude, it makes no doubt that the failure of the members and of the parliament of bordeaux is due to their opposition to the forces that were to gradually influence and dominate the course of french history. This institution was both too old and too sclerosed to get over the hurdle of 1789, which is also a revolution in intellectual thought. From that point, society came back to an elitism based upon individual merit. The buying of offices, and therefore wealth and family ties were no longer relevant in this new system. At that point

Vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) consists of two different species of bacteria, Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium. Furthermore, VVE consists of E. faecium and can be difficult to detect with a culture-based diagnostic andcan therefore lead to the bacterium being underdiagnosed. This in turn means that the bacteria can be quietly spread within the hospital. VVE has a unique ability, it can transition from vancomycin-variables to having vancomycin-resistant phenotypes. Therefore, this study investigates at what vancomycin concentration the VVE broths can be enriched in the broths before the qPCR. The results show that the vancomycin concentration is optimal at 2 mg/L. However, for the background flora this might be a too high concentration.

Full textALEPH is one of the four LEP experiments scheduled to start taking data in 1989. It is a general purpose detector with a very fine grained gaseous, electromagnetic calorimeter and LAL (Orsay) is the twelve barrel modules was tested last summer at the CERN SPS. After a description of this calorimeter and its main characteristics designed to ensure a uniform and stable response, this thesis discusses the analysis of 10 GeV electron test beam data. In a second part one of the decay channels of beauty hadrons which can be studied at the ZO pole is presented. This channel identified through its leptonic decays. With this signature of the b quark, one hopes to measure separately the lifetimes of the various B-mesons

Full textThis thesis engages the question of community in husserlian and post-husserlian phenomenology, concentrating on the concept of the “lifeworld” (Lebenswelt), especially in The Crisis of European Sciences and Transcendental Phenomenology. At the crossroads between two major stages of Husserl’s development, of which we will reveal the implications, we question the lifeworld through the phenomenological analysis of the processes of incorporation and incarnation. We demonstrate that Husserl straightaway surmounted the impasses met by his successors, by refusing an exclusive opposition between the fields of immanence and transcendence in order to, on the contrary, propose their interlacing. Starting with resumption of the radical critique of naturalist objectivism, the stakes are to deepen the forms of intricacy between the ecological sphere and world-horizon. From there, we designate intersubjective praxis as the basis of the dynamics of community formation, which we understand in terms of forms of life

Full textFrancis Carco (1886-1958) was born at noumea. He started in literature. He landed in Paris in 1910, and strike up a frienship with poets. He found the fanciful impulse. After having collected his first poems in pamphlets, he published in the "Mercure de France" in 1914, "Jésus-la-caille". His production enlarged herself laten on by mass production novels in witch "the bad boys who lived in the "milieu" were progressing in a rich atmosphere of a recalling power. "L'homme traque" won him in 1922 the "grand prix du roman de l'académie française". We owe him also stories of travels, books of remembrances, many plays and even songs. Friend of painters and collector, he distinguished himself as an critic, elected at the Goncourt academy in 1937, the town of Paris awarded him her "grand prix du roman" for his production as a whole
