Abstract:

Abstract:
The vceCAB (vce) operon encodes the multidrug resistance pump VceCAB (VCE), which contributes to resistance of Vibrio cholerae to carbonyl cyanide m-chlorophenylhydrazine (CCCP), deoxycholate, and pentachlorophenol by several-fold. vceR, which encodes the TetR-type repressor VceR and is divergently transcribed from vce, has been characterized in Escherichia coli . Detailed characterization of vceR in V. cholerae 569B confirmed the repressive effect of VceR on VCE function and indicated several novel features of VceR. Deletion of vceR increased resistance of strain 569B to CCCP and deoxycholate modestly, but did not affect resistance to pentachlorophenol. Transcriptional analysis revealed that vce expression was not only increased in strain 569BΔvceR::Ω by 2-fold but continued to rise throughout the growth cycle. Using a vceR–lux transcriptional fusion plasmid, we examined whether vceR is autoregulated in strain 569B. Expression of vceR from the vceR–lux fusion was significantly lower in strain 569BΔvceR::Ω than in strain 569B. In addition, exposure to CCCP reduced vceR expression from the vceR–lux fusion in strain 569B but not in strain 569BΔvceR::Ω. Despite differences in the VceR binding site in strain 569B from the previously recognized 28 bp sequence in V. cholerae CVD101, purified recombinant VceR bound to the 24 bp sequence from strain 569B. We propose that VceR modulates vce expression by binding in vivo to the 24 bp sequence within the vceR–vce intergenic region; unlike many TetR repressors that are negatively autoregulated, VceR positively regulates vceR expression in trans.

Abstract Background Videocapsule Endoscopy (VCE) as well as balloon-assisted enteroscopy (BAE) are useful tools in the diagnosis and management of obscure gastrointestinal bleeding (OGIB). There is limited data assessing the diagnostic yield of VCE in subjects with OGIB according to different subtypes: 1) obscure overt 2) inactive overt and 3) active overt. Aims We evaluated the diagnostic yield and outcomes of patients undergoing a second VCE in OGIB. Methods This is a retrospective analysis of all patients who underwent more than one VCE completed at the University of Alberta from January 1, 2015 to August 31, 2021. Demographic and background information was collected including previous endoscopy results, cross-sectional imaging, and subsequent interventions. Patient data was analyzed according to subtype of OGIB at presentation. Results During the study period, there were 59 subjects who met inclusion criteria. The indication for VCE was recurrent iron deficiency anemia (IDA), active OGIB, and/or inactive OGIB in 38 subjects. The median time to VCE after initial endoscopic evaluation was 61 days. Median age of cases was 61.5 years and 49% were female. Initial VCE had clinically significant positive findings in 68% of cases (Table 1). The diagnostic yield was 75%, 56% and 74% in active OGIB, inactive OGIB, and IDA, respectively. Active bleeding or fresh blood was present in 33% of VCEs for active OGIB compared to 11% of inactive OGIB and 13% of subjects with IDA. At second VCE investigation, there were positive findings in 42% of cases. Findings on second VCE differed from initial VCE in 17 of 38 cases. Findings that changed clinical management were found in 76% of patients after first and second VCE. BAEs were performed in 20 subjects after VCE, with therapeutics applied in 75%. The most common findings were arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) (65%) and erosions/ulcers (15%). Conclusions The diagnostic yield of VCE is high in appropriately selected patients and did not significantly differ in patients with IDA, active, and inactive OGIB. Serial VCE is appropriate for the investigation of suspected recurrent small bowel bleeding when initial workup is nondiagnostic. Funding Agencies None

Abstract:
Abstract Background and study aims Constitutional mismatch repair deficiency (CMMRD) syndrome, also known as biallelic mismatch repair deficiency (BMMRD) syndrome is a rare autosomal-recessive genetic disorder that has a high mortality due to malignancy in childhood and early adulthood. The small bowel phenotype in CMMRD is not well described and surveillance protocols for small bowel cancer have not been well established. This study was conducted to evaluate the usefulness and clinical impact of video capsule endoscopy (VCE) for small bowel surveillance. Patients and methods We retrospectively reviewed the prospectively maintained International CMMRD Consortium database. Treating physicians were contacted and VCE report data were extracted using a standardized template. Results Among 58 patients included in the database, 38 VCE reports were collected from 17 patients. Polypoid lesions were first detected on VCE at a median age of 14 years (range: 4 – 17). Of these, 39 % in 7 patients (15/38) showed large polypoid lesions (> 10 mm) or multiple polyps that prompted further investigations. Consequently, three patients were diagnosed with small bowel neoplasia including one patient with adenocarcinoma. Small bowel neoplasia and/or cancer were confirmed histologically in 35 % of the patients (6/17) who had capsule surveillance and the lesions in half of these patients were initially visualized on VCE. Multiple polyps were identified on eight VCEs that were completed on three patients. Ten VCEs (28 %) were incomplete due to slow bowel transit; none required capsule removal. Conclusions Small bowel surveillance in patients with CMMRD should be initiated early in life. VCE has the potential to detect polyps; however, small bowel neoplasias are often proximal and can be missed, emphasizing the importance of concurrent surveillance with other modalities. Abstract:
The Virginia Cooperative Extension (VCE) Master Gardener (MG) Coordinator Manual, a 14-chapter resource book, was developed cooperatively with teams of VCE MGs, coordinators, and agents to enhance coordinators' skills. It includes chapters on risk management, volunteer management, the educational process, current policies, and the volunteer section of the VCE Master Gardener's Handbook. The VCE MG Coordinator Manual was the basis of four local VCE MG coordinator-training sessions in 1998. This evaluation showed that coordinators are using the manual and adapting the suggestions and samples to fit their local programs, despite the fact that more planning time is often required. Those using the manual increased their understanding of VCE goals and the role of the VCE MG and slightly increased their leadership skills. Reading the manual showed a need for information on training VCE MGs to work with agents to design and implement strong horticulture education programs for Virginia communities. Areas for improvement were identified before final publication.

Abstract:
Background Video capsule endoscopy (VCE) is a noninvasive method enabling excellent visualization of the small bowel (SB) mucosa. The aim of this study was to examine the impact and safety of VCE performed in children and adolescents with suspected or established Crohn’s disease (CD). Methods A total of 180 VCE examinations in 169 consecutive patients conducted in 2003–14 in a single center were retrospectively analyzed. The median age was 13 years (range 3–17 years) and indications for VCE were suspected (125 cases, 69%) and established (55 cases, 31%) CD. VCE was performed with a PillCam SB (Given Imaging, Yokneam, Israel) VCE system with 8–12 h of registration without bowel preparation. Results A total of 154 of 180 (86%) patients swallowed the capsule and 26 (14%) had the capsule endoscopically placed in the duodenum. Patency capsule examination was performed in 71 cases prior to VCE to exclude SB obstruction. VCE detected findings consistent with SB CD in 71 (40%) examinations and 17 (9%) procedures showed minor changes not diagnostic for CD. A total of 92 (51%) examinations displayed normal SB mucosa. The capsule did not reach the colon within the recording time in 30 (17%) procedures and were defined as incomplete examinations. A change in diagnosis or therapy was recommended in 56 (31%) patients based on VCE results. Capsule retention occurred in one patient. Conclusions VCE is a safe method in children with suspected or established CD. VCE often leads to a definitive diagnosis and has a significant impact on the clinical management of pediatric patients with CD.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTThis study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) secondary psychology course in preparing students for studying psychology at a tertiary level. First semester results of 228 first year psychology students at Victoria University of Technology were analysed. Of these students 60 had completed VCE Psychology in 1992. No significant differences were observed in overall semester one psychology performance between students who had completed VCE Psychology and those who had not. Regression analysis suggested that VCE aggregate score was a better predictor than the VCE Psychology score of overall performance in the first year psychology course. Subsequent correlation analyses demonstrated that VCE Psychology scores correlated significantly with tertiary psychology examination results but not with coursework requirements. VCE aggregate scores correlated with both examination and coursework requirements. These results suggest that completion of VCE Psychology does not advantage students entering tertiary psychology courses and educators need to analyse both the content and process of both secondary and tertiary psychology courses to facilitate more effective articulations for students.

Abstract:
Viscum coloratum has been used as a component for traditional medicine for therapy of inflammatory diseases. Nonetheless, effect of Viscum coloratum on inflammatory bowel disease is unknown. Therefore, we investigated whether the ethanol extract of Viscum coloratum (VCE) could suppress inflammatory responses in dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-treated mice and mast cell-derived inflammatory mediator (MDIM)-activated Caco-2 cells. VCE significantly attenuated body weight loss, shortened colon length, enteric epithelium disruption, enterorrhagia and colonic edema in DSS-treated mice. Additionally, VCE decreased the levels of immunoglobulin E, interleukin-6 and tumor necrosis factor-[Formula: see text] in serum and the activity of myeloperoxidase in colonic tissue. Moreover, VCE inhibited the infiltration of immune cells as well as the activity and expression of both matrix metalloprotease-2 and matrix metalloprotease-9. Furthermore, VCE restored zonula occludens-1 expression. Consistent with in vivo studies, VCE suppressed the activity and expression of matrix metalloprotease-2 and matrix metalloprotease-9 in MDIM-activated Caco-2 cells. In addition, VCE reinstated the expression of zonula occludens-1 through inhibiting activation of janus kinase 2/signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 in the cells. In conclusion, VCE exerts anticolitic action through inhibiting the activation of mast cells. Therefore, VCE may be useful as a phytomedicine or functional food for inflammatory bowel disease.

Waly, Ahmed Fathi. "A Virtual Construction Environment (VCE) for Macro Planning." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/28068.

Full text
Abstract:
Macro Planning of construction projects is among the most challenging tasks faced by the project team. Decisions made during this process have a tremendous impact on the successful execution of the project from its early conceptual phases, through the project construction and completion. For a large majority of construction projects, the current planning practices remain manually based. General and project specific data are communicated among project participants through design drawings in a 2D paper-based format. Due to the interdependence between the different elements and the large amount of information that needs to be manually processed, the current manual implementation approach is very difficult to undertake, and imposes a heavy burden on the project team to carry out the planning process. Various research efforts have been undertaken in an attempt to capture current planning techniques and allow for the development of new innovative and automated ways in planning. The developed planning systems are characterized as responsive decision systems, relying mainly on programmed knowledge and heuristics for decision making, hence reducing or eliminating the role of the human planner. This research presents the framework for a new interactive planning environment called the Virtual Construction Environment (VCE) that supports the thinking process of the project team during the macro planning phase of design-build projects. Unlike previous responsive-type systems developed, the approach utilized in the VCE is supportive to the project team enabling them to be an active participant in the decision making process. The main purpose of the VCE is to assist the project team during decision making, by providing pertinent information necessary for making appropriate decisions in a structured format. This information may be organized, stored, and retrieved by the project team whenever needed during the virtual sessions. The VCE also provides the project team with appropriate tools to test different work execution and site layout planning scenarios early during project development. During the virtual sessions, the project team reconstructs the facility by bringing graphical elements together. The project teamâ s movements and interactions are recorded to capture their thinking process on how to construct the facility (i.e. sequence of major assemblies). Other project participants can retrieve recorded decisions for further review or modification. The project team is also able to specify construction methods, and allocate resources required for the implementation of major assemblies. The VCE guides the project team to perform these interdependent planning functions interactively and concurrently. Using system graphical libraries, major equipment and temporary facilities can be superimposed and displayed as graphical objects for site layout planning. This enables the project team to visually check for space and accessibility conflicts during different virtual construction time intervals. In order to define required information in the VCE, the author has developed a MAcro Planning Information Classification (MAPIC) model under which information required for macro planning decision making could be classified and organized in a structured standardized format. The project team may then retrieve and utilize this information whenever needed during the virtual sessions. A prototype computer tool is developed to illustrate the framework of the VCE. The computer prototype is implemented using available commercial software tools.

Abstract:
The Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) Physical Education curriculum, like final “exit” year studies nationally and internationally, has drawn attention from highly regarded academics regarding the challenges faced by teachers in integrating theory with physical activity as prescribed in curriculum documentation. This research aimed to extend on previous study focused on the achievement of integration through learning that occurs in, through, and about movement. A unique overlay was adopted by investigating any influence of gender discourse in this process. Given the non-mandatory nature of the selection of VCE Physical Education as a subject by students, and the articulation within the prescribed curriculum that theoretical understanding will be underpinned by practical based physical activity, it is reasonable to expect that students who select this study enjoy the opportunity to be active. Therefore, this research intended to contribute to current and previous discussion around the use of physical activity to develop and apply theoretical understanding. Additionally, this study set out to contribute new understanding to what, if any, influence gender discourse had on the types of physical activity selected by teachers and how these activities were implemented. This research adopted two separate but closely related theoretical frameworks: Arnold’s dimensions of movement (1979), which underpinned most previous research into the concept of integration, and Wilcox’s embodied ways of knowing (2009). Both frameworks provided guidance on the use of movement in the production of knowledge and its application to conceptual understanding. A qualitative research design involving a case study approach was used. Three independent secondary schools in the inner south-eastern suburbs of Melbourne were involved in two phases of the case study. Phase 1 was a document analysis that involved two VCE Physical Education teachers from each school submitting documentation that pertained to the enactment of the VCE Physical Education Study Design at their school, particularly regarding the use of physical activity in their classes. In Phase 2 the same teachers undertook a semi-structured interview, during which teachers had the opportunity to discuss the submitted documentation and provide perspectives on how they integrated physical activity with theoretical concepts within their pedagogy. Further insight was also sought on the role gender played, if any, during the selection and implementation of physical activity. The findings affirmed previous research that the concept of integration was viewed as important by teachers, however integration was complex to achieve due to various influences and no apparent singularly accepted process. The use of physical activity during the process of enacting the curriculum was also found to be influenced, either directly or indirectly, by gender discourses. A need for further professional learning, policy review, and research were identified as important implications from this study.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This study examines whether recent changes to the mathematics courses offered in the final year of secondary school (Year 12) in the state of Victoria, Australia have affected the learning outcomes of students in terms of then: skill levels in algebra, calculus and problem solving; and in terms of their preparation for a tertiary mathematics unit. The impact of these changes on the transition from secondary to tertiary mathematics is also considered. A comparison is made between students who attempted a first year mathematics unit at the University of Melbourne (U. of M.) having completed the new V.C.E. (Victorian Certificate of Education) mathematics courses and mathematics courses from the previous H.S.C. (Higher School Certificate) system. The comparison involves the use of tests administered upon entrance to a tertiary mathematics unit at the U. of M., and questionnaires. In 1991, V.C.E, students and H.S.C. students attempted the same mathematics test at the U. of M. and their results were compared. In 1992, the tests were attempted by V.C.E. students only. To compare new V.C.E. students and H.S.C. students, questions on the 1991 test were matched with similar questions on the 1992 tests and a panel of experts determined what the H.S.C. students who attempted the 1991 test would have been expected to average on these matched questions on the 1992 tests had they attempted them. These expected average scores were then compared with the actual scores of the new V.C.E. students. The scores of the groups were scaled when necessary. Questionnaires were administered to 1991 U. of M, mathematics students who were part of the V.C.E. pilot group in 1990, secondary mathematics educators, tertiary mathematics educators, and 1991 V.C.E. (1992 U. of M.) students. The mathematical misconceptions exhibited by new V.C.E. students are discussed and their frequencies stated. The research indicates that the new V.C.E. mathematics courses have provided the V.C.E. mathematics students in this study with significantly lower skill levels and a significantly poorer preparation for a tertiary mathematics unit than those which were previously provided by the H.S.C. mathematics courses.

Karlsson, Victoria. "Environmental management in China." Thesis, KTH, Industriell ekologi, 2010. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-58642.

Full text
Abstract:
In this study the aim was to investigate and nuance how the Volvo Construction Equipment (VCE) production Hub can evolve their environmental work, at Chinese wheel loader producer Shandong Lingong (SDLG), to reach Volvo standard. The study also aimed to investigate what international companies in China should take into consideration in their environmental work. The work was carried out by answering the following research questions; In which way or ways can the VCE Hub at SDLG evolve their environmental work to reach Volvo standard? What should international companies take into consideration in their environmental work when establishing on the Chinese market, and why? A lot of the information in this Thesis is based on empirical data, i.e. interviews. Three interviews with Swedish companies have been carried out. They are all highly valuing Environmental work but use different methods, their situations are unlike and they produce diverse products. Several interviews with people working with environmental issues in different ways have also been done, as well as with the SGS; a Chinese certification body. Three different companies with production in or around Shanghai were chosen; Volvo CE, SKF, and Sandvik. All three companies are originally Swedish but with production in China. Environmental work is highly prioritized in Sweden and the companies have global environmental policies and goals. The three companies were chosen because they are in different production areas but they are striving in the same direction with environmental issues in China. They are working differently and their situations are of various kinds. In 2006 Volvo CE invested in a Chinese wheel loader producer named Shandong Lingong. Volvo CE has a Hub, at the plant, which runs independently. SDLG are still not ISO 14001 certified and do not have an environmental management system (EMS) that is conformably with the Volvo demands. The most important to take into consideration when doing business in China is according to the study; top management support, to do training for the employees, mediate the importance of awareness, and to have knowledge about Chinese regulations. These are some of the issues International companies have to deal with when doing business in China. A well established EMS is a necessity for a good environmental work. To implement an EMS in the Hub as a pilot project is the best solution according to the information gathered in this thesis. SDLG could be a part-, they can evaluate-, and later it could be possible to implement the process in the whole SDLG. Due to this methodology they will learn how to work according to Volvo requirements and obtain benefits of an implementation. There are three different alternatives for the ISO 14001 certification of the Hub according to this work. For the Hub to be ISO 14001 certified together with another Volvo plant seems to be the best alternative thought it reduces the amount of work with legal authorities. VCE’s EMS will also not be compared with SDLG and it will be moneysaving. The policies and Environmental aspects (EA) though have to be rewritten to be suitable for both the factories.

Abstract:
In this paper, a double bypass variable cycle engine with FLADE (Fan on Blade) is considered. The FLADE VCE is one of the research hotspots for future military and civil aircraft power device, which shows outstanding performance advantages. Compared to the mixed-flow turbofan, FLADE VCE is more complex than conventional aero-engine for its multi-components and multi-variable parts, which make it difficult to modeling and optimization. For getting the performance of FLADE VCE, the model for engine performance simulation is researched. The method for FLADE performance simulation and the steady-state performance simulation model for FLADE VCE are developed. And a component-based engine performance simulation system is established based on object-oriented modeling method. For obtaining the optimal integrated performance of FLADE VCE, suitable optimization method is required. Unfortunately, the optimization of FLADE VCE is a non-linear non-differentiable problem, which makes it difficult to solve by conventional deterministic optimization method. In order to solve this problem, the differential evolution (DE) algorithm is considered. To overcome the limitations of original DE algorithm, an improved DE algorithm with modifying mutation operator is proposed by this paper. The FLADE VCE optimization problem is solved by employing the improved DE algorithm.

Abstract:
Abstract Variable cycle engine (VCE) is considered as one of the best options for advanced military or commercial supersonic propulsion system. Variable geometries enable the engine to adjust performance over the entire the flight envelope but add complexity to the engine. Evolutionary algorithms (EAs) have been widely used in the design of VCE. The initial guesses of the engine model are generally set using design point information during evolutionary optimization. However, the design point information is not suitable for all situations. Without suitable initial guesses, the Newton-Raphson solver will not be able to reach the solution quickly, or even get a convergent solution. In this paper, a new method is proposed to obtain suitable initial guesses of VCE model during evolutionary optimization. Differential evolution (DE) algorithm is used to verify our method through a series of optimization cases of a double bypass VCE. The result indicates that the method can significantly reduce the VCE model call number during evolutionary optimization, which means a dramatic reduction in terms of evolution time. And the robustness of the optimization is not affected by the method. The method can also be used in the evolutionary optimization of other engines.

Abstract:
A hydrocarbon Vapor Cloud Explosion (VCE) is one of critical hazardous events in offshore installations. Once VCE occurs in the ocean, it results in tremendous economic loss, casualties, and environmental impact. The combustion mechanism of VCE differs from HE in particular in complex geometries (e.g. offshore oil and gas production facilities) as there exist many objects which can trigger severe turbulences. Although many research efforts have been made to develop design provisions for blast resistant structures, most of those provisions are based on high-order explosives (HE) such as TNT (TriNiTrotoluene) in a free field. Therefore, typical blast resistant structural design standards were examined to address the weaknesses of standards in this study. Existing blast wave models which provide key design load parameters were also reviewed to address limitations of each approach. Finally, essential recommendations are discussed in this paper for future studies to improve blast resistant structural design provisions with the ultimate aim of protecting our lives, assets and environment from VCE in the ocean.

Abstract:
Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO), a significant offshore oil-gas production system, faces a variety of risks in the process of operation. Vapor cloud explosion (VCE) caused by combustible gas leakage is likely to occur on the topside of FPSO. As an initial accident, VCE has an effect on surrounding devices, leading to subsequent consequences and ampliative scale of the accident. The process, known as the domino effect, can result in severe consequences, indicating that it is necessary to analyze characteristics and impacts of the domino effect on FPSO. In this study, the most risky equipment is determined. VCE overpressure on device surfaces caused by gas leakage of this most risky equipment is calculated, and the results are used for analyzing the domino effect based on Bayesian network.

Full text
Abstract:
The transient performance of the Selective Bleed Variable Cycle Engine (VCE) has been optimized during the transition from subsonic to supersonic mode. The Selective Bleed VCE concept has been developed with a Short Take-Off Vertical Landing (STOVL) aircraft in mind and the engine is characterized by its twin mode VCE feature. The transition optimization is constrained by the requirement of maintaining thrust and compressor surge margins. The engine variable geometry component schedules and the fuel flow are used as optimization variables. A differential algebraic formulation of an inter-component volume model is used to model the transient behavior of the engine. Sequential Quadratic Programming (SQP) is applied to the non-linear transient engine model directly, in order to solve the multivariable control problem. It is predicted that the mode switch can be carried out safely without violating the constraints and that the time required is limited by the actuator time of the hydraulic system.

Abstract:
Pressure vessel and piping layout is usually focused on minimizing construction costs and ensuring safety from an equipment failure standpoint. When the equipment contains flammable gases, a leak or rupture may result in a vapor cloud explosion (VCE). The severity of the resulting explosion is a function of the material reactivity, the equipment density, and the presence of structures that restrict the free expansion of the combusting cloud. This paper provides an overview of existing vapor cloud explosion prediction methodologies, with an emphasis on the effects of process equipment and piping spacing on the severity of a VCE.
