Abstract:
According to Vuk Karadzic, sung epic poetry accompanied by the gusle was spread by outlaws, travellers and the blind. Such blind men used to perform in homes, monasteries, and church fairs (in Banat, Backa, Slavonia and Srem, such a fair is known as the slava - patron saint?s day - of a church, village, town or monastery). After World War II, some literary authors and historians started to refer to the gusle players and singers who were blind as ?the blind singers?. These writers and literary historians started appreciating their singing as high art, so the view of their singing as a form of craft accompanied by begging they did for a living had to be changed. They believed that the artists were supposed to be remembered simply as ?blind singers?, rather than ?blind men?. Their lyrical achievement was valued more than their craft (singing) and social status (begging). Among the most adamant advocates of the new designation were university professor Vladan Nedic and the poet Vasko Popa.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the history of two most prominent Galician boyar families after the capture of the Red Rus’ (the former Principality of Galicia) by Poland in 1349. The most influential Galician boyar (nobleman of Russian origin) Khodko Loevich, apparently, owned only 3-4 small villages. He had no sons, so his family stopped. Vasko Tyaptyukovich began his career as an ordinary nobleman in the 1370s. He became the richest Galician landowner of Russian origin thanks to generous grants of 1375, 1376, 1392, 1416 and 1417. After the childless Vasko, his younger brother Prokop inherited. His son Jan Prokopovich and grandson Andrei Prokop, who died in the XVI century, held positions in the system of the nobility self-government of the Galician land and were Polonized Catholics. The fate of these nobles is a vivid proof that almost all the descendants of the famous Galician boyars of the 13th century were the owners of one or two small villages in the first decades of the Polish domination.

Abstract:
The paper examines the angelological-poetic relations in the poetry of Vasko Popa, Branko Miljković and Vojislav Karanović. Beginning with the medial position between the poet and the poem, the angel, with the poet‘s intervention, becomes an active principle in discovering the poem as such. He simultaneously exists in the space of the poem itself, as well as in the space of its realization in language, and its role is doubly translational: it translates the poet into the space of poetry and brings poetry closer to the poet. The given process flows through the original approximation and depiction of the poet and the angelic being / body, and it ends in the creation of a poem, which is, in its characteristics, close to the angelological complex.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In this polemical piece, the author attempts to diagnose the state of the art of poetry in the context of the global market as a dominant social value system. He finds that poetry as a fundamental human need for freedom, is based on the concept of “freedom of meaning”, not “freedom” of the market. The “free market” is for him a misnomer which conceals the contemporary global dependence on profit and a hectic way of life in the pursuit of profit. This is to the detriment of poetry which while never profitable contains the seeds of what it is to be human. However, while poetry does not (co-)exist with the market, even this fact is worthy of being recorded in poetry. Thus poets have to deal with the contemporary situation by re-inventing themselves, and finding new (modern, even market) means of solving poetic questions, following the advice of Vasko Popa and the example of the poet of the advertisement, Dušan Radović.

Abstract:
Vasko Popa’s poetry represents a part of mandatory curriculum in primary and secondary schools, which necessarily results in the expansion of its primary readership, which imposes the need to answer questions about the possibility of teaching interpretation that will ena- ble its interpretation and understanding. The paper addresses Popa’s cycles of poems „List”, „Landscapes”, „The Little Box”, „Far Within Us”, „Give Me Back My Rags”, „Games” and „One Bone to Another”. The methodical approach that will enable students to experience and understand the poems will depend on the poetic material and the poetic procedure. The aim of the paper is to consider certain poetic features of Popa’s poetry that contribute to the sug- gestiveness of the experience, imagination and understanding of the poem, as well as others that deny certain aspects of understanding the text for young readers. At the end of the paper, it is concluded that, although certain aspects of the poetic text remain inaccessible to students, other understood and experienced aspects are reflected positively as a whole and lead to stable outcomes during the teaching interpretation. This implies that it is necessary to introduce stu- dents to contemporary poetry, and to plan the teaching interpretation according to the levels of complexity of the interpretation of an individual poem.

Abstract:
On the example of a few essays from the first essay collection The Deadlines of Poetry (orig. Rokovi poezije) by Miodrag Pavlović, the paper tries to signify the indications of a future poetic principle. An analytical overview of their reading and interpretation of William Butler Yeats’s and Vasko Popa’s poetries, as well as certain theoretical and fundamental reconsideration of the literature work and poetic forms, indicate important early archi-textual traces of Pavlović’s poetic concept. Within the context of Pavlović’s opus, the paper aspires to emphasize evident correspondence occurring between an essay level and a poetic level of his work, i.e. artistic implications of his critic-essay insights. This kind of observed congruence between his essayistic and poetic plan is featured at the level of the essayistic point of view and experience of the poetic art especially, as an effort toward enclosing the whole human experience, which will later be incarnated in Pavlović’s very poetry through topics of various civilizational intersections, which are given in an epic range from ancient and biblical spheres to pagan and Christian worlds.

His illustrations were presented in the time of socialist realist aesthetics announce a reintegration of Slovenian art into the global (Western) context. Among the illustrations is the figure of Cyclops devouring Odysseus' comrades. The image of the one-eyed giant Polyphemus is one which concerned Pregelj all his life: the painter, whose vocation is most dependent on the gaze, can show one eye in profile. And the profiles of others' faces and of his own face interested Pregelj his whole life through. Not only people but also objects were one-eyed: the rosette of a cathedral, which changes into a human figure, a washing machine door, a meat grinder's orifice, a blind “windeye” or window, and so on. The themes of his final two paintings, which he, already more than a year before his boding senseless death at the age of 54, executed but did not complete, are Polyphemus and the Portrait of His Son Vasko. In the first, blood flows from the pricked-out eye towards a stylized camera, in the second, the gaze of the son, an enthusiastic filmmaker, extends to the camera that will displace the father's brush.

Abstract:
N-type Ca2+ channels (CaV2.2) are a nidus for neurotransmitter release and nociceptive transmission. However, the use of CaV2.2 blockers in pain therapeutics is limited by side effects resulting from inhibition of the physiological functions of CaV2.2 within the CNS. We identified an anti-nociceptive peptide (Brittain, J. M., Duarte, D. B., Wilson, S. M., Zhu, W., Ballard, C., Johnson, P. L., Liu, N., Xiong, W., Ripsch, M. S., Wang, Y., Fehrenbacher, J. (2011) Suppression of inflammatory and neuropathic pain by uncoupling CRMP2 from the presynaptic Ca2+ channel complex. Nat. Med. 17, 822–829) derived from the axonal collapsin response mediator protein 2 (CRMP2), a protein known to bind and enhance CaV2.2 activity. Using a peptide tiling array, we identified novel peptides within the first intracellular loop (CaV2.2(388–402), “L1”) and the distal C terminus (CaV1.2(2014–2028) “Ct-dis”) that bound CRMP2. Microscale thermophoresis demonstrated micromolar and nanomolar binding affinities between recombinant CRMP2 and synthetic L1 and Ct-dis peptides, respectively. Co-immunoprecipitation experiments showed that CRMP2 association with CaV2.2 was inhibited by L1 and Ct-dis peptides. L1 and Ct-dis, rendered cell-penetrant by fusion with the protein transduction domain of the human immunodeficiency virus TAT protein, were tested in in vitro and in vivo experiments. Depolarization-induced calcium influx in dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons was inhibited by both peptides. Ct-dis, but not L1, peptide inhibited depolarization-stimulated release of the neuropeptide transmitter calcitonin gene-related peptide in mouse DRG neurons. Similar results were obtained in DRGs from mice with a heterozygous mutation of Nf1 linked to neurofibromatosis type 1. Ct-dis peptide, administered intraperitoneally, exhibited antinociception in a zalcitabine (2′-3′-dideoxycytidine) model of AIDS therapy-induced and tibial nerve injury-related peripheral neuropathy. This study suggests that CaV peptides, by perturbing interactions with the neuromodulator CRMP2, contribute to suppression of neuronal hypersensitivity and nociception.

Abstract:
Nicol, G. D., M. R. Vasko, and A. R. Evans. Prostaglandins suppress an outward potassium current in embryonic rat sensory neurons. J. Neurophysiol. 77: 167–176, 1997. The cellular mechanisms giving rise to the enhanced excitability induced by prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and carba prostacyclin (CPGI2) in embryonic rat sensory neurons were investigated using the whole cell patch-clamp recording technique. Exposing sensory neurons to 1 μM PGE2 produced a twofold increase in the number of action potentials elicited by a ramp of depolarizing current, but this eicosanoid had no effect on the resting membrane potential or the amplitude of the slow afterhyperpolarization. Characterization of the outward potassium currents in the embryonic sensory neurons indicated that the composition of the total current was variable among these neurons. A steady-state inactivation protocol was used to determine the extent of residual noninactivating current. A conditioning prepulse to +20 mV demonstrated that some of these neurons exhibited only a sustained potassium current with little steady-state inactivation whereas others exhibited some combination of a sustained as well as a rapidly inactivating I A-type current. Treatment with 1 μM PGE2 or 1 μM CPGI2, but not 1 μM prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α) produced a time-dependent suppression of the total potassium current. After a 20-min exposure, PGE2 and CPGI2 inhibited the maximal current obtained at +60 mV by 48 and 40%, respectively. The prostaglandin-induced suppression of the potassium current was not associated with a shift in the voltage dependence for activation. Subtraction of the currents remaining after PGE2 or CPGI2 treatment from their respective control recordings revealed that the prostaglandin-sensitive current had characteristics that were consistent with a sustained-type of potassium current. This idea is supported by the following observation. The steady-state inactivation protocol revealed that for prepulse voltages activating both rapidly inactivating and sustained currents, the relaxation of the current was accelerated after treatment with PGE2 or CPGI2 suggesting the removal of a slower component. This effect was not observed in neurons exhibiting only the sustained type current. These results suggest that pro-inflammatory prostaglandins enhance the excitability of rat sensory neurons, in part, through the suppression of an outward potassium current that may modulate the firing threshold for generation of the action potential.

Abstract:
Beyond a century, however, tradition is of no value. The pre-Hispanic Tarascans and those of a few generations ago are merged into “antepasados” and unless an historically known event is referred to, it is difficult to know to what period a tradition refers.—Ralph L. Beals, Pedro Carrasco, and Thomas McCorkle, 1944This article examines the emergence and transformation of the legendary Vasco de Quiroga from the eighteenth to the twentieth centuries. It argues that from the mid-eighteenth century onward Vasco de Quiroga has been transformed into a humanist icon due to the shifting needs of various “historical presents.” Today Vasco de Quiroga is remembered for the utopian communities he dreamed of establishing among the “Indians” of Michoacán, where he served as the first bishop from 1536-1565. However, the traditional image of Vasco de Quiroga as a saintly father figure who understood and was beloved by his Indian charges is best understood as an after-the-fact reconstruction rooted more in colonial discourse, creole perceptions and the formation of modern Mexican nationalism than the sixteenth-century past.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Straipsnyje apžvelgiama ir analizuojama vaiko teisių apsaugos Lietuvoje raida ir aktualijos. Nuo 2000 m. Lietuvoje prasidėjo tikroji vaiko teisių ir veiksmų plano reforma, priimta naujų vaiko teises ir gerovę reglamentuojančių įstatymų, patvirtintos ir vykdomos tęstinės programos. Teisės reforma įpareigoja reorganizuoti socialinę veiklą siekiant vaiko gerovės. Šiame straipsnyje analizuojami 2002-2004 metais Mykolo Romerio universitete atliktų tyrimų, kaip įgyvendinamos vaiko teisės, rezultatai. Siekta išsiaiškinti Vaiko teisių apsaugos tarnybų specialistų, kitų socialinių institucijų socialinių darbuotojų požiūrį. Taip pat įvertinti vienos aktualiausių problemų siekiant vaiko gerovės - smurto prieš vaikus - situaciją Lietuvos šeimose moksleivių požiūriu.

Abstract:
In this essay I seek to explore the nucleus of Vasco de Magalhaes-Vilhena’s tought, a predecessor of historical materialism in philosophy in Portugal. For that, I will begin by giving an historical contextualization of the philosopher, followed by the analyses of two of his works. The first corresponds to the book that the author wrote about Antonio Sergio’s philosophical thought, another contemporary thinker. In it, we find one of the main theses of Magalhaes-Vilhena’s critique of philosophical idealism, a distinctive element of Marxist philosophy. The second corresponds to Fragmentos Sobre Ideologia ( Fragments about Ideology), a collection of texts written by the author while in his exile in France about the role of ideology in science and in society. In this collection we may find another of Magalhaes-Vilhena’s main theses concerning the unity of science. Lastly, I will make a few final considerations incorporating the historical analysis with both book analyses.

Abstract:
This paper evokes the life and the work of Vasco de Magalhães-Vilhena as a communist militant and a Marxist philosopher. These two dimensions are inseparable in his life’s exemplariness as much as in the intensive intellectual activity through which he influenced the philosophical culture of his lifetime as much as in the writings he left to the further generations. The PCP, having donated the Magalhães-Vilhena Library to the School of Arts and Humanities (Faculdade de Letras) of the University of Lisbon, recognizes the value of this homage in the school where the foregoing professor lectured and fi nished his teaching practice.
