Abstract:
The study was aimed at determining potential differences in seed quality of spring and winter barley in relation to varieties (four winter and two spring barley varieties) and growing conditions (six locations, two years). Three tests were performed on each seed sample, i.e. (1) the standard germination test; (2) the low temperature and drought stress germination test and (3) the germination test in a salt solution. The effects of the factors of variety, provenance and year on seed vigour were estimated by the analysis of variance and Tukey’s post hoc test. The germination of winter varieties was influenced by provenance, both measures of vigour (2 and 3) by year, and significant differences between varieties were found in all three traits. Spring varieties differed only in germination and vigour (3) in one year when the influence of provenance prevailed. The results show different effects of variety and provenance on seed vigour. This could be promising for the breeding of high vigour barley varieties. Some preliminary results were obtained by using controlled deterioration (CD) as a vigour testing method for barley. The suitable conditions seem to be the combination of 45°C and 24% moisture content for the period of 24 hours.

Abstract:
Abstract.Cotton ( L.) producers were some of the earliest adopters of practices employing site-specific management. Yield monitors are an essential component of those precision agriculture methods. The agreement between measured cotton yields and those estimated with yield monitors must be improved to adequately advance precision agriculture, particularly the site-specific planting of multiple varieties. Six site-years of observations with two yield monitor systems were studied with the objective to compare yield monitor-estimated weights to observed weights in replicated cotton variety trials and investigate factors that could relate to any observed varietal effect. The results supported the findings of earlier research indicating that cotton yield monitor calibration is affected by variety. For the six site-years and three combinations of two site-years, correlations were sometimes observed between calibration errors and turnout or some of the High Volume Instrument (HVI) fiber quality measurements, but no factor was consistently correlated across multiple studies. In one study, none of the included factors was significantly correlated with calibration error, while the HVI properties reflectance (Rd) and leaf grade were both significantly correlated in three comparisons, which was more than any other factor. Data from additional site-years must be collected and analyzed and other factors investigated to find what variety-related properties affect yield monitor errors and to allow the determination of calibration adjustments based on those factors. This research shows that mating mindsets, which consumers commonly experience, can have a crucial impact on consumers' variety seeking tendencies. In two studies, we find that male consumers in a long-term mating mindset (versus a non-mating mindset) exhibit more (versus less) variety seeking behavior. For male consumers, the effects of mating mindsets on variety seeking are driven by sensitivity to errors of omission. However, for female consumers, variety seeking behavior and sensitivity to errors of omission were not significantly different across mating and non-mating conditions. In closing, the author discusses theoretical and managerial implications..

Nutrition from whole grains has become an integral part of a healthy diet. Consumers are focused on adding fiber and whole grains to be healthy and want the benefits of whole grain with the taste and appearance of refined flour. A review of current commercial whole wheat flour in the marketplace indicated many options for food processors to use. However, many of these options required processing changes and added ingredients to provide the consumer with a quality product. A milling and baking study was done to compare commercially and experimentally milled whole wheat flours from both white and red wheat varieties. Both white and red wheat varieties were kept identity preserved. Experimental milling was done with a hammer mill and a roll stand to closely replicate the commercial milling process. Baking was done using a sponge and dough method to closely replicate commercial baking conditions. The results showed both particle size and wheat variety impact bake performance of whole wheat flour. The most significant impact appeared to be dependent on the variety of wheat being milled. The milling process also had an impact. As particle size decreased, bake functionality improved. However, some decreased functionality was seen when particle size became very fine. It was concluded that additional work on a commercial flour mill needed to be done to determine if an optimal particle size for milling whole wheat flour exists. Experimental milling equipment was not adequate enough to replicate particle size distributions of commercial whole wheat mills.

Abstract:
The overall purpose of this dissertation was to examine variety in exercise, and investigate the extent to which the experience of variety in exercise is an additional psychological experience (i.e., when examined alongside satisfaction of the needs for competence, relatedness, and autonomy, embedded within self-determination theory) that has implications for increasing exercise behaviour and exercise-related well-being. The primary purpose of Study 1 was to develop an instrument to measure perceived variety in exercise, and examine whether ratings of perceived variety in exercise prospectively predict unique variance in indices of exercise-related well-being (when examined alongside the three basic psychological needs within self-determination theory, Deci & Ryan, 2002). The results indicate that perceived variety in exercise explains an important amount of variance in indices of exercise-related well-being, in addition to satisfaction of the needs for competence, relatedness, and autonomy. In Study 2 we examined whether perceived variety in exercise complements satisfaction of these three needs by prospectively predicting variance in exercise behaviour, through the mediating role of autonomous and controlled motivation. Results showed that perceived variety, competence, and relatedness were unique indirect positive predictors of exercise behaviour via autonomous motivation, and autonomy was found to negatively predict controlled motivation. Subsequently, we conducted a field-based experimental investigation for Studies 3 and 4 to examine whether the experience of variety in exercise causally influences exercise adherence behaviour and exercise-related well-being, respectively. Findings from Study 3 showed that greater exercise-related variety support influenced perceptions of variety in exercise, but not perceptions of competence, relatedness, or autonomy in exercise. Furthermore, greater variety support lead to improved exercise adherence, and that relationship was explained by perceived variety in exercise. In Study 4, we found evidence that exercise-related variety support led to higher scores on indices of exercise-related well-being, and that these relationships were mediated by perceptions of variety in exercise. Studies 3 and 4 provide evidence for the utility of targeting the experience of variety to influence exercise behaviour and exercise-related well-being. Combined, these investigations further our understanding of the predictive and causal implications that variety in exercise may have for exercise behaviour and exercise-related well-being.

Many cotton field trials were conducted in central Arizona to compare various early season pesticide treatments on several commercially available cultivars for plant growth responses and thrips control. Treated plots received either aldicarb (Temik), at planting or first square, or acephate (Orthene), one to three foliar applications during early squaring. Although results were quite variable, general trends included: most treatments did reduce thrips populations; fewer shed squares occurred in plots treated at first square; plants compensated for this square shed; treated plots may be earlier in boll production than untreated areas; and most tests showed no statistical differences in healthy square production or in yield.

Morar, Bharet. "Investigating the effects of variety on the piston rod manufacturing process at Gabriel SA (Pty) Ltd." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/9251.

Abstract:
Bibliography: leaves 145-147.
This thesis investigates the effects of variety on the manufacturing operations system of a automotive component (shock absorber) manufacturer, Gabriel South Africa Pty Ltd. Effective ways to manage this variety are also considered. By variety is meant the total number of possible states that a system can have. The measure of variety can also be considered as the extent of complexity of a system. The variety of product, people (from different cultures, backgrounds, etc.), processes machines and equipment, etc. and a continually changing environment creates a complex situation in which management decisions have to be made. Over the last three years, 1992 to 1994, Gabriel SA Pty Ltd has implemented world class manufacturing initiatives, for example, cellular manufacture, kanban, employee involvement programs, strategic business units, a Total Quality Management System, etc., but the anticipated results of increased production throughput did not occur. A situation has developed where changes had been implemented and there is now a difference between the actual and expected results. This thesis investigates possible causes for this difference. In order to conduct a rigorous and structured inquiry into the problem situation a theoretical research framework was developed. This framework was developed from the ideas of the American philosopher Charles Sanders Peirce (CSP) and that of Chris Argyris. Checkland's, Ackoff's et. al. views on system thinking were also used to form this framework.

Harty, Tyler. "Effects of Atomic Oxygen on the Vacuum-Induced Mass Loss Properties of a Variety of Spacecraft Materials." DigitalCommons@CalPoly, 2017. https://digitalcommons.calpoly.edu/theses/1788.

Full text
Abstract:
The space environment influences spacecraft design and material selection in many ways. Two aspects of the space environment that were of interest for this research are the vacuum and atomic oxygen (AO) environments. This project used the outgassing testing chamber and the AO chamber in the Cal Poly Space Environments lab to test multiple common spacecraft materials and determine whether AO affects the outgassing properties of those materials. This research has relevant applications in the design and material selection for spacecraft in low-Earth orbits. AO and outgassing are both known to be individual contributors of spacecraft material mass loss and degradation, but laboratory tests on the synergy are rare. ASTM E595 standardized test procedures were used to determine the Total Mass Loss (TML) and Collected Volatile Condensable Materials (CVCM) values for each material, at which point the test group of materials were subjected to AO exposure according to ASTM E2089 while the control group remained under similar vacuum and temperature conditions. Finally, all of the materials were subjected to a second ASTM E595 test. The results show a statistically significant effect of AO on some materials' outgassing properties. In particular, three of the four silicone materials tested showed a lower TML for the AO exposed group compared to the control group which can be explained by the glassification of silicone due to AO exposure. This explanation was confirmed by Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. More testing is recommended to confirm the trends found during the testing and to re-test the materials whose wide variation in outgassing values prevented conclusions from being drawn.

Abstract:
Since the very first days of cinema, audiences have marveled at the special effects imagery presented on movie screens. While long relegated to the margins of film studies, special effects have recently become the object of a burgeoning field of scholarship. With the emergence of a digital cinema, and the development of computerized visual effects, film theorists and historians have been reconsidering the traditional accounts of cinematic representation, recognising the important role of special effects. Understood as a constituent part of the cinema, special effects are a major technical but also aesthetic component of filmmaking and an important part of the experience for the audience. In this volume, new directions are charted for the exploration of this indispensable aspect of the cinematic experience. Each of the essays in this collection offers new insight into the theoretical and historical study of special effects. The contributors address the many aspects of special effects, from a variety of perspectives, considering them as a conceptual problem, recounting the history of specific special effects techniques, and analysing notable effects films.

Abstract:
More than fifteen years after the introduction of direct election, the mayors are still the most popular politicians in Italy. The personal relationship set up with the citizens and the strengthening of the city councils has restored energy and stability to the action of the municipal administrations. Nevertheless, these institutional reforms, while important, have failed to guarantee good government. The effects of the mayoral reform are, in fact, considerably different from one city to another, and from one type of policy to another. What does this variety of results derive from? The book provides an answer to this question through an investigation of the decisional processes of around a hundred "local collective assets" in six large metropolitan cities. To explain the different outcomes – in addition to the "council effect", that is, the relevance of policy, and the "sector effect", the relevance of the different decisional milieus – the authors also underscore the role of the "governance effect", namely the different approaches to decision-making and building consensus on urban policies.

Abstract:
AbstractAlgebraic effects offer a versatile framework that covers a wide variety of effects. However, the family of operations that delimit scopes are not algebraic and are usually modelled as handlers, thus preventing them from being used freely in conjunction with algebraic operations. Although proposals for scoped operations exist, they are either ad-hoc and unprincipled, or too inconvenient for practical programming. This paper provides the best of both worlds: a theoretically-founded model of scoped effects that is convenient for implementation and reasoning. Our new model is based on an adjunction between a locally finitely presentable category and a category of functorial algebras. Using comparison functors between adjunctions, we show that our new model, an existing indexed model, and a third approach that simulates scoped operations in terms of algebraic ones have equal expressivity for handling scoped operations. We consider our new model to be the sweet spot between ease of implementation and structuredness. Additionally, our approach automatically induces fusion laws of handlers of scoped effects, which are useful for reasoning and optimisation.

Abstract:
Abstract Industrial enterprises see themselves confronted with a complexity of products and production processes, which became almost uncontrollable. Individualization and globalization of the demand will continue to increase, so that the existing variety of the product variants presumably cannot be reduced significantly. Attainable are however a strong weakening of the variety increase and a reduction of the internal complexity. Results from numerous analysis projects in the automobile industry show that substantial potentials (on the average 64%) for the reduction of the complexity are present in areas without impact on the degree of fulfillment of customer requirements (engine, axles, raw body, etc.). Even higher potentials are realizable by an intensive cooperation between manufacturers and suppliers. This paper introduces the Variant Mode and Effects Analysis (VMEA), which is a proven method to reduce the number of variants and, therefore, the complexity and complexity-related costs throughout the whole development and manufacturing processes. The method includes a systematic analysis of market requirements and a systematic assignment of market requirements to product functions, modules and parts, thereby enabling the user to develop a modularized, market-oriented product structure designed for meeting the market demands with the smallest number of product variants possible. The results presented in this paper were obtained in a series of twenty cooperation projects involving ten medium-sized German manufacturers of cars and automotive supplies, among them Audi AG, BMW AG, Volkswagen AG, Volvo and Micro Compact Car.

Abstract:
This paper examines ideation variety as a measure of the extent to which a design solution space has been explored. We investigated one cognitive factor (cognitive style) and one cognitive intervention (Design Heuristics cards) and their relationships with students’ ideation variety, both actual and perceived. Cognitive style was measured using the Kirton Adaption-Innovation inventory (KAI), while variety scores were computed using the metrics of Nelson et al. [18] and Shah et al. [20]; an adapted form of these metrics was also explored. A group of 132 sophomore mechanical engineering students generated ideas for two design problems (one with and one without Design Heuristics cards). They sketched and described their conceptual solutions in words and assessed the variety of their solutions after ideation. Linear statistical techniques were applied to explore the relationships among the variety scores, students’ self-assessments of variety, cognitive style, quantity of ideas, and the presence of the Design Heuristics intervention. Our results show statistically significant correlations between students’ perceived variety and their variety performance, and between cognitive style and both variety performance and student perceptions.

Abstract:
Abstract The study presented here explores the influence that an educational intervention has on students in generating requirements during a design task. An experiment was performed in a fourth-year level mechanical engineering design course in which student participants are given a design problem for which they generated a list of requirements, a lecture on requirements in engineering design, and a second design problem for which they generated a second list of requirements. The results from the two problems were tested for determine whether the problems were similar in terms of variety and novelty of requirements generated. The effects of the lecture were evaluated by comparing results from the pre- and post-lecture activity with the two problems. Variety was assessed by sorting the individual requirements generated by each participant into eighteen categories. Novelty was evaluated on the level of uniqueness of the requirement against the complete set generated by all participants, based on both syntax and semantic filtering. The findings suggest that the lecture had a positive impact on the students in increasing the variety of the requirements generated individually by the participants. Further, all the identified novel requirements belonged to the activity performed after lecture.

Full text
Abstract:
Although engineered nanomaterials are active components in a wide variety of commercial products, there is still limited information related to the effects of these nanomaterials once released into the terrestrial environment. A high number of commercial applications use silver nanoparticles (nAg) due to its anti-microbial activity. This may be of concern for waste management since nAg could be applied to soil (e.g., biosolids) or disposed of in traditional landfills, which could lead to possible leaching into surrounding soil. This report aims to provide additional insight into the fate and effects of nAg in terrestrial systems. The studies in this report examine the leachability of nAg in field soil and compares the soil migration to bulk (i.e., micron-sized) silver; examine the ecotoxicity of nAg to earthworms in four field soils spanning several different soil orders; and examine the behavioral effects of earthworms when exposed to engineered nanoparticles in field soil. These data provide additional insight into engineered nanoparticle fate and effects to terrestrial receptors in field soils, an important distinction from laboratory-generated soils. These data will also assist ecological risk assessors to better determine the acute environmental risks of nAg in terrestrial ecosystems with different soil compositions.

Read, Matthew. Estimating the Effects of Monetary Policy in Australia Using Sign-restricted Structural Vector Autoregressions. Reserve Bank of Australia, January 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.47688/rdp2022-09.

Full text
Abstract:
Existing estimates of the macroeconomic effects of Australian monetary policy tend to be based on strong, potentially contentious, assumptions. I estimate these effects under weaker assumptions. Specifically, I estimate a structural vector autoregression identified using a variety of sign restrictions, including restrictions on impulse responses to a monetary policy shock, the monetary policy reaction function, and the relationship between the monetary policy shock and a proxy for this shock. I use an approach to Bayesian inference that accounts for the problem of posterior sensitivity to the choice of prior that arises in this setting, which turns out to be important. Some sets of identifying restrictions are not particularly informative about the effects of monetary policy. However, combining the restrictions allows us to draw some useful inferences. There is robust evidence that an increase in the cash rate lowers output and consumer prices at horizons beyond a year or so. The results are consistent with the macroeconomic effects of a 100 basis point increase in the cash rate lying towards the upper end of the range of existing estimates.

Chakravorty, Ujjayant, and Martino Pelli. Electrification and development: Empirical evidence on the effect of electricity provision on household welfare. CIRANO, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.54932/soan1297.

Full text
Abstract:
The effect of electrification on economic outcomes is a major new area of study in environment and development economics. Almost a billion people in the world do not have access to grid electricity. Providing them a grid connection will be costly and polluting as well, even if powered by cleaner fossil fuels such as natural gas, instead of coal. However, the economic benefits of electricity are not well understood. Some studies find large effects on economic development in the long run, while others find small or negligible impacts on households in the short run. These benefits may also depend on household characteristics such as credit constraints that prevent them from consuming power or investing in complimentary assets. This paper highlights the state of current knowledge on the costs and benefits of electrification by reviewing the recent empirical literature. We discuss the identification strategies employed and evaluate the effect of electrification on a variety of household-level outcomes such as income, employment and education.

Abstract:
Review question / Objective: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a novel infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), which has caused a huge impact in many countries and has attracted great attention from countries around the world. However, since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, most attention has focused on containing transmission and addressing the surge of critically ill patients in acute care settings. As we enter the second phase of the pandemic, emphasis must evolve to post care of COVID-19 survivors. A variety of persistent symptoms, such as severe fatigue, shortness of breath, and attention disorder have been reported at several months after the onset of the infection. We urgently need to identify safe and effective COVID-19 rehabilitative strategies. Overwhelming evidence exists that physical activity produces short-, middle- and long-term health benefits that prevent, delay, mitigate and even reverse a large number of metabolic, pulmonary and cardiovascular diseases. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of physical activity interventions for rehabilitation of post-covid-19 patient and provide a reliable method and credible evidence to improve the prognosis of post-COVID-19 patients via systematic review and meta-analysis.

Abstract:
At the start of this project, fungi in the genus Trichoderma were known to be potent biocontrol agents, and their primary mechanism was considered to via direct effects upon the target fungi. Due in large part to the efforts of the two PIs, we now know that this view is far too limited; while Trichoderma spp. do indeed have direct effects on pathogenic fungi, they have very far reaching effects directly upon plants. Indeed, these fungi must be considered as opportunistic plant symbionts; they provide a number of benefits to plants and themselves are favored by large numbers of healthy roots. Research under this BARD grant has demonstrated that These fungi induce resistance mechanisms in plants. They increase root development and depth of rooting; Bradyrhizobium enhances this effect in soybean. They enhance uptake of plant nutrients. They have abilities to solubilize nutrients, such as oxidized metals and insoluble phosphorus compounds by a variety of different mechanisms and biochemicals. This is a marked expansion of our knowledge of the abilities of these organisms. This knowledge has direct implications for understanding of basic plant responses and abilities, and already is being used to improve plant productivity and reduce pollution of the environment.

Abstract:
Forest health has never been a more urgent concern in California. A variety of forest ecosystem types have experienced extraordinary combinations of stressors and disturbances over the past century, which have resulted in significant changes to forest conditions. Current conditions are a product of multiple interacting factors, including fire exclusion, historic logging practices, increased wildland-urban-interface expansion and, more recently, the effects associated with climate change. The intersection of the factors has led to high severity fire, drought linked mortality, and pest infestation and disease in the affected forests. It’s increasingly clear that the expected effects of climate change will further impact California forest ecosystems, potentially compelling and, in some cases, forcing the application of targeted adaptation strategies and approaches in the years and decades to come.

Bosch, Mariano, Stephanie González, and María Teresa Silva Porto. Chasing Informality: Evidence from Increasing Enforcement in Large Firms in Peru. Inter-American Development Bank, March 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0003128.

Full text
Abstract:
Evasion of labor market regulations in middle income countries is systemic. This is generally known as informality. In Latin America, where less than 50% of workers are registered with social security, this is a permanent phenomenon and encompasses a variety of economic realities ranging from subsistence self-employment to evasion of certain regulations including social security contributions. In this study we analyze the role of enforcement in curbing informality in large formal firms in Peru, where informality levels are around 70%. Through the Peruvian National Labor Control Superintendence (SUNAFIL) we randomly sent 697 letters to formal Peruvian firms of more than 50 workers, indicating their obligation to enroll workers in social insurance systems (health and pensions). Two types of letters were sent, one with a deterrence message and one emphasizing the benefits of formalization. One year after the letters were sent, we found a positive and statistically significant effect on the number of workers enrolled in social security (9.8% on average). Only strict deterrence messages had a significant impact, and only in very large firms. This evidence suggests that there is room for improvement in compliance with labor regulations through more proactive monitoring and behavioral tools such as reminders, but effects could be concentrated in the largest firms.
