Full textLet A_2 be the toroidally compactified moduli stack of principally polarized complex abelian surfaces, and let M_k(Sp_4(Z)) be the line bundle of Siegel modular forms of weight k on A_2, equipped with the Petersson metric. Viewing A_2 as the complex fibre of an arithmetic variety over Spec(Z), and M_k(Sp_4(Z)) as the complex line bundle induced by a line bundle on this arithmetic variety, we can ask for the arithmetic degree of this line bundle. We will state a formula for the arithmetic degree in terms of special values of the logarithmic derivative of the Riemann zeta-function. The arithmetic degree consists of a contribution from intersection over Spec(Z), and from an integral of Green forms over the complex fibre. The computation of the summand of the arithmetic degree coming from the complex fibre A_2 will be approached by making a specific choice of sections of M_k(Sp_4(Z)), whose behaviour is well-known or can be worked out by their representation via theta-functions. With an induction argument, we will trace back the integral over the star-product of the corresponding Green forms to a sum of integrals over particular cycles on A_2 coming from the successive intersection of the divisors of these sections, as well as some boundary terms in the form of integrals around the toroidal boundary. We will prove that the boundary terms vanish, using Minkowski theory and a specific choice of the partition of unity that appears in arithmetic intersection theory for logarithmically singular metrics. The integrals over the special cycles will be traced back to results of Kudla and an application of a modular version of Jensen's formula.

Full textAs a result of the TERA-project on Turbo Evaluation and Rapid Algorithms a new type, highly efficient probabilistic algorithm for the solution of systems of polynomial equations was developed and implemented for the complex case. The geometry of polar varieties allows to extend this algorithm to a method for the characterization of the real solution set of systems of polynomial equations. The aim of this work is to apply an implementation of this method for the determination of real solutions to a class of example problems. Special emphasis was placed on the fact that those example problems possess real-life, practical applications. This requirement is satisfied for the systems of polynomial equations that result from the design of fast wavelet transforms. The wavelet transforms considered here shall possess the practical important properties of symmetry and orthogonality. The specification of such a wavelet transform depends on a finite number of real parameters. Those parameters have to obey certain polynomial equations. In the literature published on this topic, only example problems with a finite solution set were presented. For the computation of those examples it was sufficient to solve quadratic equations in one or two variables. To characterize the set of real solutions of a system of polynomial equations it is a first step to find at least one point in each connected component. Already this is an intrinsically hard problem. It turns out that the algorithm of the TERA-project performes very well with this task and is able to solve a larger number of examples than the best known commercial polynomial solvers.
Botero, Ana María. "b-divisors on toric and toroidal embeddings." Doctoral thesis, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.18452/18140.
Full textIn this thesis we develop an intersection theory of toric and toroidal b-divisors on toric and toroidal embeddings, respectively. Our motivation comes from wanting to establish an arithmetic intersection theory on mixed Shimura varieties of non- compact type. The tools available until now do not define numerical invariants which are birationally invariant. First, we define toric b-divisors on toric varieties and an integrability notion of such divisors. We show that under suitable positivity assumptions toric b- divisors are integrable and that their degree is given as the volume of a convex set. Moreover, we show that the dimension of the space of global sections of a nef toric b-divisor is equal to the number of lattice points in this convex set and we give a Hilbert-Samuel type formula for its asymptotic growth. This generalizes classical results for classical toric divisors on toric varieties. As a by-product, we relate convex sets arising from toric b-divisors with Newton-Okounkov bodies. Then, we define toroidal b-divisors on toroidal varieties and an integrability notion of such divisors. We show that under suitable positivity assumptions toroidal b-divisors are integrable and that their degree is given as an integral with respect to a limit measure, which is a weak limit of discrete measures whose weights are defined via tropical intersection theory on the rational con- ical polyhedral complex attached to the toroidal variety. We also relate this limit measure with the surface area measure associated to a convex body. This relation enables us to compute integrals with respect to these limit measures ex- plicitly. Additionally, we give a canonical decomposition of the difference of two convex sets and we relate the volume of the pieces to tropical top intersection numbers. Finally, as an application, we compute the degree of the b-divisor of Jacobi forms of weight k and index m with respect to the principal congruence subgroup of level N >= 3 on the generalized universal elliptic curve and we show that it is meaningful to consider the b-divisorial approach instead of just fixing one canonical compactification.

Full textWe investigate questions motivated by Mori''s program for the moduli space of stable pointed rational curves, M_{0,n}. In particular, we study its nef cone (Chapter 2), its Cox ring (Chapter 3), and its cone of movable curves (Chapter 4). In Chapter 2, we prove Fulton''s conjecture for M_{0,n} for n less than or equal to 7, which states that any divisor on these moduli spaces non-negatively intersecting all so-called F-curves is linearly equivalent to an effective sum of boundary divisors. As a corollary, it follows that a divisor is nef if and only if the divisor intersects all F-curves non-negatively. By duality, we thus recover Keel and McKernan''s result that the F-curves generate the closed cone of curves when n is less than or equal to seven, but with methods that do not rely on negativity properties of the canonical bundle that fail for higher n. Chapter 3 initiates a study of relations among generators of the Cox ring of M_{0,n}. We first prove a `relation-free'' result that exhibits polynomial subrings of the Cox ring in boundary section variables. In the opposite direction, we exhibit multidegrees such that the corresponding graded parts meet the ideal of relations non-trivially. In Chapter 4, we study the so-called complete intersection cone for the three-fold M_{0,6}. For a smooth projective variety X, this cone is defined as the closure of curve classes obtained as intersections of the dimension of X minus one very ample divisors. The complete intersection cone is contained in the cone of movable curves, which is dual to the cone of pseudoeffective divisors. We show that, for a series of toric birational models for M_{0,6}, the complete intersection and movable cones coincide, while for M_{0,6}, there is strict containment.

Full textThe first topic of this dissertation is the defect of projective hypersurfaces. It is indicated that hypersurfaces with defect have a rather large singular locus. In the first chapter of this thesis, this will be made precise and proven for hypersurfaces with arbitrary isolated singularities over a field of characteristic zero, and for certain classes of hypersurfaces in positive characteristic. Moreover, over a finite field, an estimate on the density of hypersurfaces without defect is given. Finally, it is shown that a non-factorial threefold hypersurface with isolated singularities always has defect. The second chapter of this dissertation deals with Bertini theorems over finite fields building upon Poonen’s formula for the density of smooth hypersurface sections in a smooth ambient variety. This will be extended to quasismooth hypersurfaces in simplicial toric varieties. The main application is to show that hypersurfaces admitting a large singular locus compared to their degree have density zero. Furthermore, the chapter contains a Bertini irreducibility theorem for simplicial toric varieties generalizing work of Charles and Poonen. The third chapter continues with density questions over finite fields. In the beginning, certain fibrations over smooth projective bases living in a weighted projective space are considered. The first result is a Bertini-type theorem for smooth fibrations, giving back Poonen’s formula on smooth hypersurfaces. The final section deals with elliptic curves over a function field of a variety of dimension at least two. The techniques developed in the first two sections allow to produce a lower bound on the density of such curves with Mordell-Weil rank zero, improving an estimate of Kloosterman.

Full textFor elliptic curves E/K over a number field K the Cassels-Tate pairing forces the order of the Tate-Shafarevich group Sha(E/K) to be a perfect square. It is known, that if A/K is a principally polarised abelian variety, then the order of Sha(A/K) is a square or twice a square. William Stein conjectures that for any given square-free positive integer k there is an abelian variety A/Q, such that #Sha(A/Q)=kn². However, it is an open question what to expect if the dimension of A/Q is bounded. Restricting to abelian surfaces B/Q, then results of Poonen, Stoll and Stein imply that there are examples such that #Sha(B/Q)=kn², for k in {1,2,3}. In this thesis we focus in depth on non-simple abelian surfaces B/Q, i.e. there are elliptic curves E_1/Q and E_2/Q and an isogeny phi: E_1 x E_2 -> B. We want to compute the order of Sha(B/Q) with respect to the order of the Tate-Shafarevich group of E_1 x E_2, which has square order. To achieve this goal, we explore the invariance under isogeny of the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture. For each k in {1,2,3,5,6,7,10,13,14} we construct a non-simple non-principally polarised abelian surface B/Q, such that #Sha(B/Q)=kn². Furthermore, we compute numerically how often the order of Sha(B/Q) equals five times a square, for cyclic isogenies phi: E_1 x E_2 -> B of degree 5. It turns out that this happens to be the case in approx. 50% of the first 20 million examples we have checked. Finally, we prove that if there is a cyclic isogeny phi: E_1 x E_2 -> B and #Sha(B/Q)=kn², then k is in {1,2,3,5,6,7,10,13}. For general isogenies phi: E_1 x E_2 -> B it remains unclear, whether there are only finitely many possibilities for k. In the appendix, we briefly consider abelian surfaces B/Q being isogenous to Jacobians J of hyperelliptic curves over Q. The techniques developed in this thesis allow to understand certain cyclic isogenies phi: J -> B. For each k in {11,17,23,29}, we provide an example with #Sha(B/Q)=kn².

Full textThis dissertation deals with {\em geometric algorithms} for solving real multivariate polynomial equation systems, that define a reduced regular sequence (cf. subsection $\ref{abschgeo}$). Real solving means that one has to find at least one real point in each connected component of a real compact and smooth variety $V := W \cap \R^n$. \\ The main point of this thesis is the use of a complex symbolic geometric algorithm, which is designed for an algebraically closed field and was published in the papers \cite{gh2} and \cite{gh3}. The models of computation are {\em straight--line programms} and {\em arithmetic Networks} with parameters in $\; \Q$. Let the polynomials be given by a division--free straight--line programm of size $L$. A geometric solution for the system of equations given by the regular sequence consists in a {\em primitiv element} of the ring extension associated with the system, a minimal polynomial of this primitive element and a parametrization of the coordinates. This representation has a long history going back to {\em Leopold Kronecker} \cite{kron}. The time--complexity of our algorithms turns out to be linear in $L$ and polynomial with respect to $n, d, \delta$ or $\delta '$, respectively. Here $n$ denotes the number of variables, $d$ is an upper bound of the degrees of the polynomials involved in the system, $\delta$ and $\delta '$ are geometric invariants representing the maximum of the {\em affine (geometric) degree} of the system under consideration and the affine (geometric) degree of suitable {\em polar varieties} (cf. \cite{he} for the ({\em geometric}) degree). The application of an algorithm running in the complex numbers to solve polynomial equations in the real case becomes possible by the introduction of polar varieties (cf. \cite{bank}). The polar varieties introduced for this purpose prove to be the corner--stone and the preliminary tool for the efficient use of the geometric algorithm mentioned above. An incremental algorithm is designed to find at least one real point on each connected component of the zero set defined by the input under the assumption that the given semialgebraic set $V = W \cap \R^n$ is a bounded, smooth (local) complete intersection manifold in $\R^n$. The increment of the new algorithm is the codimension of the polar varieties under consideration. The main theorems are Theorem $\ref{theorem12}$ on page $\pageref{theorem12}$ for the hypersurface case, and Theorem $\ref{theoresult}$ on page $\pageref{theoresult}$ for the complete intersection as well as the statement in the introduction of this thesis on page $\pageref{vollres}$.
