Murphy, Nancy E. "Variation between laboratory procedures for the microscopic examination of human hair." Thesis, Boston University, 2013. https://hdl.handle.net/2144/12168.

Abstract:
Thesis (M.S.)--Boston University
A critical overview of forensic science was performed by the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) in 2009 which resulted in several recommendations for the advancement of the hair analysis discipline within the field of trace evidence examination. Among them included improvements to training and proficiency testing requirements, adaptation of uniform protocols between all laboratories, and enhanced research and development efforts aimed at reducing the subjectivity between multiple analysts or within the same analyst. A survey was created for forensic hair analysts to determine what current microscopic hair examination procedures are being used and to identify variability between characteristics of individual examiners and laboratory practices in the field, three years following the NAS report. The survey was completed by 117 members of the American Society of Trace Evidence Examiners (ASTEE) and contained questions about the experience and training of the analyst, impact of the NAS report findings, type of hair examinations performed, and hair features referenced during microscopic hair comparisons. Most analysts surveyed received the same substantial amount of training and have several years of experience; however, very few reported that any laboratory procedures were affected as a result of the NAS report. Though hair analysis is not structured by mandated, uniform standard operating procedures, largely the same number and type of hair features are being referenced when microscopic hair comparisons are performed, indicating that little variability exists between laboratories or individual examiners. A trend toward more frequent root screenings for DNA viability and less frequent full microscopic hair comparisons was detected and supplemented by a shift of hair analysis from trace evidence sections to biology or DNA sections. Several technologies new to forensic hair analysis are currently being explored to supplement hair analyses with numerical data and, therefore, reduce subjectivity of forensic hair analysis.

Abstract:
Harold Lasswell (1936) defined politics as the exploration of "who gets what, when, and how." As such, one of the central concerns of democratic governance is the role that affected interests play not only in politics, but in the implementation of adopted policies as well. In this dissertation, I use both comparative method case studies, as well as pooled-time series statistical techniques, to examine the effects of political, economic and market forces, and competition between the affected interests on implementation of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977. The findings of this, as well as previous, research shows that state-level implementing agencies have some discretion in enforcement activities; however, closer examination shows that this discretion is rarely used. This lack of use of regulatory discretion by the state-level implementing agencies suggests that in most states, there is either sufficient competition between the affected interests to neutralize the excessive use of discretion in enforcement activity, or that there is insufficient pressure placed on the implementing agencies by the affected interests to warrant the use of discretion.

Heng, Michael Sern Tser. "Abdominal aortic aneurysms : identification by self-examination and analysis of variation in matrix metalloproteinases with peak wall stress." Thesis, University of Hull, 2011. http://hydra.hull.ac.uk/resources/hull:6288.

Full text
Abstract:
Abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) cause 5,000 deaths a year in the UK. Self-examination for AAAs may provide an economic and practical solution. Matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) concentration is elevated and levels of their natural inhibitors - Tissue Inhibitors of Matrix Metalloproteinases (TIMPs) are reduced at sites of AAA rupture. Finite element analysis (FEA) of AAAs can define the area of peak wall stress area, the most likely site of rupture in engineering terms. Study 1 Aim: To assess the effectiveness of self-examination for detection of AAAs compared to ultrasound measurement. The psychological consequences were also evaluated. 6,888(65%) of 10,591 male patients aged ≥65 years who were invited to participate, joined the study. The sensitivity of self-examination for all AAAs (≥3cm) was 37% and for clinically significant AAAs (≥5cm) was 49%. Specificities were 80% and 79% respectively. The psychological consequences of screening were assessed with the HAD (Hospital Anxiety and Depression) scale. There was no clinical anxiety or depression but there was a statistically significant reduction in both domains on completion. Self-examination for AAAs cannot be recommended as an effective screening tool. Study 2 Aim: To assess the tissue concentration of MMPs & TIMPs in AAAs at the site of peak wall stress. 22 patients undergoing elective AAA repair had FEA performed on their CT scans, identifying the peak stress site. Biopsies from this site and the arteriotomy site were stored at -80°C, and tested for MMP & TIMP concentrations with an enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). No significant difference was found between the 2 sites for MMP2, 8, 9, TIMP1 or 2. These findings suggest either that the peak stress and rupture sites are geographically different, or that the event of rupture is temporally related to a fundamental biochemical change.

Abstract:
The year 2000 (Y2K) problem presented a fortuitous opportunity to explore the relationship between estimated costs of software projects and five cost influence dimensions described by the Year 2000 Enterprise Cost Model (Kappelman, et al., 1998) -- organization, problem, solution, resources, and stage of completion. This research was a field study survey of (Y2K) project managers in industry, government, and education and part of a joint project that began in 1996 between the University of North Texas and the Y2K Working Group of the Society for Information Management (SIM). Evidence was found to support relationships between estimated costs and organization, problem, resources, and project stage but not for the solution dimension. Project stage appears to moderate the relationships for organization, particularly IS practices, and resources. A history of superior IS practices appears to mean lower estimated costs, especially for projects in larger IS organizations. Acquiring resources, especially external skills, appears to increase costs. Moreover, projects apparently have many individual differences, many related to size and to project stage, and their influences on costs appear to be at the sub-dimension or even the individual variable level. A Revised Year 2000 Enterprise Model is presented incorporating this granularity. Two primary conclusions can be drawn from this research: (1) large software projects are very complex and thus cost estimating is also; and (2) the devil of cost estimating is in the details of knowing which of the many possible variables are the important ones for each particular enterprise and project. This points to the importance of organizations keeping software project metrics and the historical calibration of cost-estimating practices. Project managers must understand the relevant details and their interaction and importance in order to successfully develop a cost estimate for a particular project, even when rational cost models are used. This research also indicates that software cost estimating has political as well as rational influences at play.

Wright, Robert Randon. "Coping with Interpersonal Conflicts at Work: An Examination of the Goodness of Fit Hypothesis Among Nurses." PDXScholar, 2012. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/610.

Full text
Abstract:
Increasingly, evidence indicates that workplace interpersonal conflicts (WIC) are the most upsetting/troublesome daily work stressors (Sulsky & Smith, 2007), and within the context of nursing, WIC is a problem of high prevalence and intensity (Baltimore, 2006; Farrell, 1999). In relation to coping with stressors such as WIC, Lazarus and Folkman (1984) established the transactional model of stress and coping, where cognitive appraisals of the stressor (e.g., perceived control) are central to coping and classified all coping behaviors as either problem-focused or emotion-focused. They also proposed the "goodness of fit hypothesis", which predicts that problem-focused coping efforts used to cope with stressors of high appraised control and emotion-focused coping paired with stressors of low appraised control will produce the most effective outcomes. Contrary to these predictions, the general literature has produced inconsistent results, suggesting that context, research method, and individual difference variables (i.e., occupational tenure) should be considered when testing this hypothesis, particularly in novel contexts such as the nursing workplace. This research was part of a larger study to identify key factors in the retention of nurses in the workforce, including a weekly survey spanning 12 weeks. Across the 12 week study period, 148 nurse participants completed an online survey, which included questions regarding the most negative interpersonal conflict at work for that week, the appraised controllability of the event, how the participant coped across 8 coping strategies, and how effective the coping efforts were. I used hierarchical linear modeling to test the goodness of fit hypothesis with these data, where the interaction terms between coping frequency and control represented the key predictions of goodness of fit. Results revealed no support for the goodness of fit hypothesis, as the interactions were not significant. Consistent with goodness of fit, however, perceived control positively predicted problem-focused coping and negatively predicted emotion-focused coping for some nurses. This suggests that despite no improvement in coping outcomes, the underlying mechanisms for goodness of fit (i.e., matching perceived control with coping type) were in operation. Results also demonstrated no support of occupational tenure as a variable influential on the coping process. However, supplemental analyses revealed that as organizational tenure increased, nurses varied their coping strategies more, which then, in turn, produced more effective coping outcomes. As the first effort to examine goodness of fit within the workplace to the best of my knowledge, these results suggest that the goodness of fit hypothesis may only have limited applicability to nursing, but should be examined in other nursing contexts and workplace conditions. Moreover, the length of time a nurse spends with an organization seems to influence one's coping style and the ability to match coping efforts with situational characteristics, producing more effective coping with interpersonal conflicts at work. These findings also imply that providing nurses with training about organization-specifics may improve efforts to cope with interpersonal conflicts that arise in the workplace.

Gayoso, Descalzi Carmen Amelia. "Russian hegemony in the CIS region : an examination of Russian influence and of variation in consent and dissent by CIS states to regional hierarchy." Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 2011. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/322/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis studies variation in Russian hegemony in the post-Soviet region. The concept of changing hegemony is used as a starting point to examine how regional hierarchy has changed in the post-Soviet period. Russian hegemony tightens and loosens depending on the time, territory and type of power logic being exercised. This systemic condition characterised by change arises not only because the way that Russia exercises its power changes, but also because the responses of the other countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) to that power fluctuate. Depending on the consent and dissent shown by the other CIS countries to the attenuation of their sovereignty, Russia’s regional hegemony either grows or lessens in intensity. This study uncovers dissent from those who do not fit within or are unprepared to adapt to the status quo of hegemony, and consent from those who accept diminishing sovereignty. Thus, hegemonies in the context of this study are characterised by regular and open-ended dialogue between states that remain independent enough to constantly negotiate the system through their consent and dissent to hierarchy. In making these claims, this study examines concepts such as sovereignty, hierarchy and legitimacy in the context of the CIS region as well as key developments in the CIS region. Specifically, it makes conclusions on how regional hierarchy around Russia is perpetuated, the factors that determine the extent of that hegemony, how bilateral and group relationships have developed between other CIS countries and Russia, and how the CIS system of states is best classified at different periods in time.

Shahin, Kimary N. "Postvelar harmony : an examination of its bases and crosslinguistic variation." Thesis, 1997. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/7406.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation examines postvelar harmony in two unrelated languages: Palestinian Arabic and St'at'imcets Salish. In contrast to previous studies, it identifies two such harmonies for each language: pharyngealisation (tongue root retraction) harmony and uvularisation (tongue back retraction) harmony. The properties of the two harmonies in each language are detailed. Acoustic data are provided as support for the proposed analyses and for the grounded phonological accounts which are subsequently developed. The harmonic feature of pharyngealisation harmony in both Palestinian and St'a'timcets is identified as [RTR] (unspecified for primary or secondary status). The anchor for [RTR] in both languages is the NUC. Co-occurring secondary-[DOR] and secondary-[RTR] are identified as the harmonic features of uvularisation harmony. In both languages, the anchor for these co-occurring features is the root node. An Optimality Theory account of the two harmonies in each language is developed, in which Correspondence, Alignment, and Grounded Constraints have central roles. Constraint reranking is shown to yield the observed crosslinguistic variation in the harmonies. In the course of this examination, issues regarding the consonantal and vocalic inventories of Palestinian and St'at'imcets are adressed. It is argued that each has a more elaborate vocalic system than previously recognised, and that St'at'imcets, like Palestinian, has a set of underlying emphatic consonants.

Jones, Danielle K., R. Wilkinson, C. Jackson, and P. Drew. "Variation and interactional non-standardization in neuropsychological tests: The case of the Addenbrooke’s Cognitive Examination." 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/10454/17317.

Abstract:

The Addenbrooke’s Cognitive Examination (ACE-111) is a neuropsychological test used in clinical practice to inform a dementia diagnosis. The ACE-111 relies on standardized administration so that patients’ scores can be interpreted by comparison with normative scores. The test is delivered and responded to in interaction between clinicians and patients, which places talk-in-interaction at the heart of its administration. In this article, conversation analysis (CA) is used to investigate how the ACE-111 is delivered in clinical practice. Based on analysis of 40 video/audio-recorded memory clinic consultations in which the ACE-111 was used, we have found that administrative standardization is rarely achieved in practice. There was evidence of both (a) interactional variation in the way the clinicians introduce the test and (b) interactional non-standardization during its implementation. We show that variation and interactional non-standardization have implications for patients’ understanding and how they might respond to particular questions.

Abstract The subjects of this study included grades 10-6 music learners of accompaniment and melody variation in the Yamaha Grade Examination. This study investigated how instructors, with the instruction of accompaniment and melody variation as well as the use of examination materials and teaching methods, trained their students to take the grade examination and employ the skills flexibly in the piano performance. In doing so, piano playing not only serves as the playing of classical piano pieces but also stimulates learners’ imagination in music, and thus enables learners to develop basic improvisatory abilities. This paper is a narrative study, exploring the design of teaching materials and teaching methods. The data were collected from in-depth interviews with instructors and analyzed in detail. A total of ten instructors participated in the study, including 5 Yamaha piano instructors and 5 KHS piano instructors. Based on qualitative data analysis, the resercher further discussed and generalized the findings of the study: ① Improvisation with the Latest Version of the Piano and Chen Hongxin’s Hands with Accompaniment Practice the two books were adopted as the teaching materials for grade 10-8 piano exam of accompaniment. Reasons for the selection are that these two books consist of the termination and inversed chords, the specified scope of the exam, and the books are arranged based on the key signature. In addition, most of the exercises are familiar nursery rhymes, world famous music, and melodies in which learners can easily identify the correct chord progression. As for grade 7-6, Practice with Lu Xiang’s Melody and Harmony and 7-6 Grade Piano Performance Test List were adopted. Both books are organized in order of the number of sharps and flats, from few to many; moreover, the seconday dominant chords of each key are sorted, which makes it easy for learners to practice. Learners can also refer to the exercises of accompaniment types and melody variation examples. Piano Performance Test List was adopted because it has a collection of previous Yamaha Grade Exams. ② In the teaching methods: Based on the interviews, the two groups of instructors have the same teaching methods of accompaniment. In the melody variation training, singing and listening to melody variation are quite essential for learners to feel whether the melody is compatible with chords. To determine the correct chord configuration, learners have to analyze the melody composition. ③ Accompaniment and melody variation in Yamaha Piano Examination can help boost learners’ perception of tonality, which is beneficial for their future teaching courses in junior high or elementary schools, their performance of pop music, jazz piano and church hymns playing.

The cultivated land is the basis for agricultural management, and is the fundamental data for production survey and yield estimation. Therefore, it is necessary to monitor the land change in a real time basis. However, in-time supports for various applications can not be satisfied, since the cultivated land is distributed all over the island and the overall renewal of the land maps is extremely time-consuming. For the purposes of improving the quality of the cultivated land maps and of providing the comprehensive and up-to-date status of the distribution of the cultivated land, this study establishes the mechanism to assist in monitoring the changes of cultivated land and to refine the checking processes. The objectives of the study are: 1.to examine and organize the cultivated land spatial data 2.to quantify the changes of cultivated land maps 3.to classify the changes of cultivated land maps This study utilizes maps of Taoyuan County as an example for verification. First, identify the spatial characteristics of the cultivated land maps. Confirm the checking items, methods and integration processes adapted consequentially to produce the cultivated land maps which meet GIS specifications and have the characteristics of cultivated land. Then, Compare the data of cultivated land maps with the latest Property Owner’s Data, quantify the variation between section maps by using statistical and inductive method, produce quantitative variation charts and format the charts for usage of field investigation and followed by classification data mining. Finally, Total of 17 classification rules are obtained after the practice. The overall accuracy is 92.94% and each user’s accuracy is above 90%. It shows that only approximately 10% of the cultivated land maps need to be examined manually, which means the improvement of processing efficacy and the decrease of the error rate generated from manual checking.

Kendall, Tyler S. "Speech Rate, Pause, and Linguistic Variation: an Examination through the Sociolinguistic Archive and Analysis Project." Diss., 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10161/1097.

Full text
Abstract:

Recordings of speech play a central role in the diverse subdisciplines of linguistics. The reliance on speech recordings is especially profound in sociolinguistics, where scholars have developed a range of techniques for eliciting and analyzing natural talk. Despite the focus on naturalistic speech data, sociolinguists have rarely focused explicitly on the management (e.g. organization, storage, accessibility, and preservation) of their data, and this lack of focus has had consequences for the advancement of the field. At the same time, the interviews that sociolinguists labor so hard to obtain are often barely mined for their full potential to further our understanding of language. That is, sociolinguists often focus on a handful of phonological and/or morphosyntactic variables to the exclusion of so many other features of speech. The present work both addresses the management of sociolinguistic data and, through an innovative approach to speech data management and analysis, extends the sociolinguistic lens to include the lesser-examined realm of variation in sequential temporal patterns of talk.

The first part of this dissertation describes the Sociolinguistic Archive and Analysis Project (SLAAP), a web-based digitization and preservation initiative at North Carolina State University. SLAAP, which I principally have designed and developed, is more than an archive; it has actively sought to explicate approaches to spoken language data management and to enrich spoken language data through the development of analytic tools designed specifically for sociolinguistic analysis. This dissertation begins by situating SLAAP within the history of data management practices in the field of sociolinguistics. It then provides an overview of many of SLAAP's features, discussing in particular the transcript model that enables most of its analytic and presentational capabilities.

The second part of this dissertation takes advantage of SLAAP's data model and the extensive language data accumulated within its archive to examine variation in speech rate and silent pause duration by North American English speakers of four ethnicities in North Carolina, Ohio, Texas, Washington, DC, and Newfoundland. This work brings a wide range of previous research from different areas of sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, and corpus linguistics to bear on an array of quantitative analyses, demonstrating that speech rate and pause exhibit meaningful variation at the social level at the same time as they are also constrained by cognitive and articulatory processes.

Specifically, pause and speech rate are shown to vary by region, ethnicity, and gender - albeit not in mono-directional ways - although other factors arise as significant, including, for speech rate, a strong effect of utterance length as well as a number of interactional or discourse-related factors, such as the gender of the interviewer and the number of participants in the speech event. A number of the examinations undertaken relate sociolinguistic conceptions of style to language production and cognitive processes, including a quantitative analysis of sequential temporal patterns as paralinguistic cues to attention to speech, performativity, and the realization of phonological and morphosyntactic variables. Through this analysis, sociolinguistic data and findings are brought to bear on a tradition of psycholinguistic investigations with the hope to benefit both, often disparate, areas of research.

Brown, Matthew Adam. "Investigating normal and pathological variation in memory-based inhibition : an examination of worry, thought suppression, and stimuli characteristics." 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/2152/10592.

Abstract:
This work was conducted in an effort to better understand the role that activational mechanisms in memory play in the etiology and maintenance of anxiety disorders. The affect of word stimuli characteristics, such as affective valence and semantic association with worry, on the association between inhibition and trait worry was investigated under different types of induced thought. Previous research has demonstrated that worry is associated with negative affect, and that worry may be semantically organized in memory. Based on these findings, it was hypothesized that words would be differentially inhibited in association with trait worry when worry was induced compared to neutral thought. Stimuli characteristics including the positive or negative affective valence of words, and their semantic association with common domains of worry were expected to moderate the relationship between inhibition and trait worry. In order to investigate these hypotheses, 86 undergraduate students from the University of Texas at Austin completed a series of memory tasks designed to measure inhibition for either negative or positive words, both associated and unassociated with worry. They underwent either idiopathic worry or neutral thought induction prior to completing each memory task, and completed questionnaires assessing trait worry and thought suppression. The findings provide partial support for the hypotheses. Higher levels of trait worry were associated with less inhibition of negative words, but more inhibition of positive words semantically associated with worry. Contrary to predictions, differential induction of worry did not affect the relationship between inhibition and trait worry. The research and clinical implications of these findings are discussed.

The primary objective of this study was to analyze the ozone pollution problem by examining the hourly variation of ambient ozone concentrations in Taiwan . In addition, the relationships between the daily maximum 1-hour and the daily maximum 8-hour ozone concentrations in different regions were studied, and compliance tests were performed for various regions using 1-hour, 120 ppb and 8-hour, 80 ppb standards. In the study, we used hourly average ozone concentration data for 1994-1997 reported by sixty-six Air Quality Monitoring Stations operated by Taiwan Environmental Protection Administration. We selected seven out of the sixty-six monitoring stations for analysis of hourly variation patterns of ozone concentrations: Chung-Shan and Shan-Min in two metropolitan centers , Shin-Dian in a downwind area of a metropolitan center, Mei-Nung and Chao-Chou in rural areas downwind of a metropolitan center, Yang-Min in a n ational park and Wan-Li in a remote area. For the purpose of analysis, the day with a maximum ozone concentration higher than 80 ppb was defined as a high ozone concentration day. To examine the pattern of hourly variation of ambient ozone concentrations in each season, we calculated the average value of the hourly average ozone concentrations for all high ozone concentration days in a season. The ratio between the maximum and the minimum ozone concentrations([O3]max / [O3]min ratio) on the hourly average concentration curve was also calculated for each season at each monitoring station. The results of analysis for hourly variation of ambient ozone concentrations on high ozone concentration days show that there were five types of hourly variation patterns: metropolitan centers, downwind areas of a metropolitan center, rural areas downwind of a metropolitan center, national parks and remote areas. In general, the hourly average ozone concentration curves had a single peak(at 12:00-16:00) for all region types. The ozone peak concentration appeared 1-2 hours earlier in a metropolitan center th an in other region types. Among different seasons, the peak concentration appeared earlier in summer than in winter. The nocturnal ozone concentrations were considerably higher in the national park(25-45 ppb) and the remote areas(10-25 ppb) than in metropolitan centers(<10 ppb) and rural areas downwind of a metropolitan center(10-20 ppb). Both the [O3]max / [O3]min ratio on the hourly average concentration curves and the magnitude of the hourly variation were smaller in the national park and the remote are as than in other regions. The results of an analysis of the data reported by the monitoring stations in the Taipei basin and the Kaohsiung-Pingtong region show that, on a high ozone concentration day, the ozone concentration exceeded 80 ppb for 2-5 hours in the Kaohsiung-Pingtong region, but only for 1-2 hours in the Taipei basin. The results of compliance tests at sixty-six monitoring stations, using 1-hour, 120 ppb and 8-hour, 80 ppb standards, show that the number of days exceeding the 1-hour/ 120 ppb standard was higher than the number of days exceeding the 8-hour/ 80 ppb standard in the Taipei basin, while the situations in other areas were in the opposite direction. This indicates that the hourly variation of ambient ozone concentrations in Taipei area differed from other areas. The results suggest that the difference among var ious patterns of hourly variation should be taken into consideration in revising ozone air quality standards. Tamkee, Patrick. "The influence of post-glacial recolonization and contemporary stream network on the evolution of genetic diversity within species : an examination of microsatellite DNA variation in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)." Thesis, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/18370.

Abstract:
Understanding the relative influence of historical and contemporary factors shaping patterns of genetic diversity is a major challenge in population and conservation biology. Patterns of genetic diversity were examined in rainbow trout throughout British Columbia to address the roles of historical isolation, postglacial dispersal, and local contemporary geomorphic features in structuring patterns of genetic variation and differentiation observed in nature. Microsatellite DNA was useful in detecting patterns of historical isolation and post glacial recolonization, showing clines of genetic variation as populations were studied in an orderly manner moving away from the putative refugia. Patterns of isolation by distance were observed among drainages closest to each refuge and were absent among populations at the periphery of the species’ range suggesting the existence of clines in migration drift equilibrium. Clines in genetic variation and isolation by distance were not observed in coastal populations and may result from ongoing gene flow which would prevent the detection of such trends. On a broad geographic scale, rainbow trout populations were structured into major regions and further structured within each major region into smaller watersheds and drainages based on hydrological topography. The influences of elevation, number of connections between streams, fluvial distance, migration barriers and streamllake order were important in shaping observed patterns of genetic diversity among rainbow trout populations. Anadromous and fluvial populations generally displayed higher levels of genetic variation and lower levels of differentiation than lacustrine populations. Generally, within drainage, high levels of dispersal and gene flow were observed between geographically proximate and contiguous lakes. Streamllake order was a better predictor of genetic variation than lake surface area and perimeter. Although founder events and postglacial dispersal likely played large roles in determining the broad scale patterns of genetic diversity in rainbow trout, the results suggest that contemporary factors can strongly modulate historical patterns. To properly plan for the conservation of such species, it is necessary to understand the nested nature of variation exhibited by rainbow trout populations and how important stream hydrology is because it demonstrates the importance of dispersal corridors in much the same way as land formations do for terrestrial vertebrates.
