Abstract:
This chapter considers some of the issues that make it difficult to establish a working definition of play—and in consequence conducting research on the topic. Play scholars and advocates offer accounts of play that correspond to their distinctive circumstances and interests. Arguably, this diversity of viewpoint should be taken as a challenge to play scholars to explain why the different play theories have developed each in their own way. The chapter first cites some examples of behavior that most people might consider play or “almost play.” It then examines six different ways of thinking about play: play as action, play as interaction, play as activity, play as disposition, play as experience, and play as context. It also reviews several contemporary definitions of play, followed by a discussion of Brian Sutton-Smith's seven rhetorics of play: “play as progress” rhetoric; play as a confrontation with fate; power; community identity; rhetoric of the imaginary; rhetoric of self; and frivolity.

Abstract:
By confronting the singularity of the relationship between two exemplary writers of the last century, this book challenges and reinvigorates our notions of what art and criticism – literary or otherwise – can do. While it takes Roland Barthes’s encounters with Marcel Proust’s monumental masterpiece À la recherche du temps perdu as its specific focus, the implications of its argument are far-reaching. Indeed, the book argues that Barthes’s writing on Proust’s work between the early 1950s and 1980 (including a substantial set of unpublished notes for a seminar delivered at the University of Rabat in 1969–1970) proposes not only a critical culture of Proust that is productively inconsistent, but also, more generally, a fresh understanding of criticism as a creative activity that embraces insecurity and variation as it refuses to remain fixed upon reassuringly stable themes, meanings and interpretations.

Abstract:
Chapter 2 reveals that teachers’ expectations for student problem-solving are not consistent. Instead, those expectations vary from activity to activity and even from moment to moment, and those variations have real implications for inequalities. There were times when teachers wanted students to acknowledge their struggles and proactively seek support (favoring middle-class strategies of influence), but there were also times when teachers wanted students to work through difficult problems on their own, times when they did not want to give extra credit or extra time, and times when they wanted students to wait patiently with their hands raised rather than approach them with requests (favoring working-class strategies of deference). Despite those variations, however, teachers rarely made their expectations explicit. That ambiguity left students to decode what teachers wanted in a given moment, and that decoding process led students to rely even more heavily on the class-based lessons they learned at home.

Abstract:
This chapter provides examples of the ways in which victimization surveys have been used in environmental criminology to identify spatial distributions of crime and to test and refine hypotheses that speak to these distributions. It first makes some initial remarks on the variations in victimization surveys, which clearly affect what can be concluded from them with what confidence about differing forms of spatial contribution. It then provides three examples showing how national victimization surveys have been used to develop, test, and refine hypotheses drawn from environmental criminology that relate to spatial distributions of various crimes that link back to individual activity patterns. This is followed by a discussion of the benefits and limitations of victimization surveys in environmental criminology.
