Schifano, Norma. Macrovariation. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198804642.003.0004.

Full text
Abstract:
Chapter 4 provides an analysis of the patterns of default verb movement identified in Chapters 2 and 3. First, it shows that the attested macro-typologies are not accidental choices of the languages, but rather stem from a compensatory mechanism between syntax and morphology in licensing the Tense, Aspect, and Mood (TAM) interpretation of the verb, whereby verb movement only occurs in cases of poor paradigmatic instantiation of TAM, that is in cases when TAM chief values are not expressed by synthetic and non-syncretic paradigms. Second, a technical implementation of this proposal is offered which allows the modelling of this instance of variation into a parameter hierarchy, along the lines envisaged by the Rethinking Comparative Syntax research group. To conclude, the data from Brazilian Portuguese are assessed against the expectations of the proposed mechanism.

King, Ruth. Morphosyntactic Variation. Edited by Robert Bayley, Richard Cameron, and Ceil Lucas. Oxford University Press, 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199744084.013.0022.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter first reviews early methodological and theoretical debates regarding the nature of variation above the level of phonology. These debates include whether or not the notion of the linguistic variable can be legitimately extended to morphosyntactic variation; the nature of the relationship between quantitative data and the statistical results based on them and linguistic competence; and what role linguistic introspection should play. The discussion deals with current trends in modeling morphosyntactic variation, or, put differently, with the emerging field of socio-syntax. There are two main responses to the question of where morphosyntactic variation comes from. One perspective involves the postulation of multiple grammars, most prominently in Kroch’s Competing Grammars model. The other relies on the Minimalist operations of feature interpretation and feature checking.

van Craenenbroeck, Jeroen, and Tanja Temmerman, eds. The Oxford Handbook of Ellipsis. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780198712398.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This handbook is the first volume to provide a comprehensive, in-depth, and balanced discussion of ellipsis phenomena, whereby a perceived interpretation is fuller than would be expected based solely on the presence of linguistic forms. Natural language abounds in these apparently incomplete expressions, such as I laughed but Ed didn’t, in which the final portion of the sentence, the verb ‘laugh’, remains unpronounced but is still understood. The range of phenomena involved raise general and fundamental questions about the workings of grammar, but also constitute a treasure trove of fine-grained points of inter- and intralinguistic variation. The volume is divided into four parts. In the first, the authors examine the role that ellipsis plays and how it is analyzed in different theoretical frameworks and linguistic subdisciplines, such as HPSG, construction grammar, inquisitive semantics, and computational linguistics. Chapters in the second part highlight the usefulness of ellipsis as a diagnostic tool for other linguistic phenomena including movement and islands and codeswitching, while Part III focuses instead on the types of elliptical constructions found in natural language, such as sluicing, gapping, and null complement anaphora. Finally, the last part of the book contains case studies that investigate elliptical phenomena in a wide variety of languages, including Dutch, Japanese, Persian, and Finnish Sign Language.

Abstract:
Knowing what is normal and what is not is becoming a particular challenge in this era of molecular karyotyping. This chapter reviews the normal chromosome variation from classical times, now very well understood. This is followed by a discussion of the complexity and uncertainty that the molecular approach has, in this century, challenged researchers with. In particular, the chapter discusses the concept of the copy number variant (CNV) and how the harmlessness, or not, of a CNV may be assessed. Mention is made of CNVs potentially acting as “second hits,” such that, while nonpathogenic in one setting, they may contribute to an abnormal phenotype in the context of another, independent chromosome abnormality or CNV. The “sliding scale” of interpretation from “known pathogenic” through “known benign” Is noted. The chapter refers to useful databases to which the counselor may have access.
