Abstract:
20th International VDI Congress „Dritev“ – The most important powertrain development trends now digital & Corona-safe! Even in the corona crisis, the world of powertrain development does not stand still. Mobility and how it is driven remains the central focus of the automotive industry. The aim is to find good solutions in the area of conflict between rising CO2 fleet consumption, an exploding number of drive variants and regulatory intervention by the state. Many questions are still open here. The companies are therefore pursuing multi-track drive strategies that follow a comprehensive electrification of the drive system in all vehicle classes in order to be well positioned for the future. Abstract:
Nearly all behavioral traits, ranging from personality traits such as neuroticism to schizophrenia and autism, are genetically influenced. With only minor exceptions, all are genetically complex—meaning that inheritance is not simply dominant or recessive or sex-linked, but follows more complex patterns indicative of more complex mechanisms. Most risk variants identified to date have only small effects on risk, and, in most cases, many risk variants at many risk loci interact with environmental factors to produce the phenotype. Such complexity has led to great challenges in increasing our knowledge of the inheritance of behavioral traits. Recent methodological advances have provided an improved set of tools that has led to advances in our understanding of the genetic influences on a range of behavioral traits. This chapter examines some of the issues involved that tend to make this a difficult problem and some of the solutions now being employed to approach those problems.

Fischer, Frank. Practicing Participatory Environmental Governance: Ecovillages and the Global Ecovillage Movement. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199594917.003.0009.

Full text
Abstract:
Ecovillages represent an existing and ongoing form of participatory environmental government that is anchored to real-world realities. These communities are essentially made up of people who have rethought the way they live and taken steps to reduce their ecological footprint. Most are located in the countryside, but ecovillages and their variants are also found in major cities. There is also a global network of ecovillages. Linked together through the Global Ecovillage Network (GEN), they are found in many countries around the world. Moreover, some of their members lead simple lives that involve practices that remind one of earlier centuries, described as a form of “reskilling.” But others accept high-tech features such as cell phones, internet connections, solar panels, and even research laboratories. Ecovillages do not represent the solution, but they are in a position to maintain the practices of participatory environmental governance during the climate crisis.

Abstract:
Today, six out of ten Americans describe themselves as "active" environmentalists or as "sympathetic" to the movement's concerns. The movement, in turn, reflects this millions-strong support in its diversity, encompassing a wide spectrum of causes, groups, and sometimes conflicting special interests. For far-sighted activists and policy makers, the question is how this diversity affects the ability to achieve key goals in the battle against pollution, erosion, and out-of-control growth. This insightful book offers an overview of the movement -- its past as well as its present -- and issues the most persuasive call yet for a unified approach to solving environmental problems. Focusing on examples from resource use, pollution control, protection of species and habitats, and land use, the author shows how the dynamics of diversity have actually hindered environmentalists in the past, but also how a convergence of these interests around forward-looking policies can be effected, despite variance in value systems espoused. The book is thus not only an assessment of today's movement, but a blueprint for action that can help pull together many different concerns under a common banner. Anyone interested in environmental issues and active approaches to their solution will find the author's observations both astute and creative.

Rahat, Gideon, and Ofer Kenig. From Party Politics to Personalized Politics? Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198808008.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
The book examines two of the most prominent developments in contemporary democratic politics, party change and political personalization, and the relationship between them. It presents a broad-brush, cross-national comparison of these phenomena that covers around fifty years in twenty-six countries through the use of more than twenty indicators. It demonstrates that, behind a general trend of decline of political parties, there is much variance among countries. In some, party decline is moderate or even small, which may point to adaptation to the changing environments these parties operate in. In others, parties sharply decline. Most cases fall between these two poles. A clear general trend of personalization in politics is identified, but there are large differences among countries in its magnitude and manifestations. Surprisingly, the online world seems to supply parties with an opportunity to revive. When parties decline, personalization increases. Yet these are far from being perfect zero-sum relationships, which leaves room for the possibility that other political actors may step in when parties decline and that, in some cases, personalization may not hurt parties; it may even strengthen them. Personalization is a big challenge to parties. But parties were, are, and will remain a solution to the problem of collective action, of channeling personal energies to the benefit of the group. Thus they can cope with personalization and even use it to their advantage.
