Abstract:
This thesis investigates the development of a machine which is termed as singly salient reluctance (SSR) motor and its drive system. The stator of SSR motor is identical to that of a conventional induction motor or any other ac machine. Its rotor has salient poles with internal flux barriers or flux guides. This research covers the detailed designs of the SSR motors and their magnetic circuit analysis using finite element method (FEM). The parameters which are important for designing the SSR motor are investigated. This investigation resulted in designs which have low manufacturing cost as well as high torque per ampere, efficiency and power factors. This thesis also researches the different drive system for the SSR motor. The SSR motor is tested as a variable speed drive with closed loop control and supplied with dc source. Therefore for this purpose a controller system is designed and built. In addition, the SSR motor supplied by ac source using open loop control is also tested for synchronous operation. Some of the proposed designs are built and their performance compared with their predicted analysis. The SSR motors showed a competitive performance compared with equivalent induction motor in both efficiency and power factor. However the validity of the theoretical designs is assessed by comparing them with experimental results. Quite good agreement between experimental and theoretical evaluations has been achieved. In addition, suggested further improvements for SSR motors and drive systems are discussed.

A new type of variable-reluctance motor with axially stacked stator and rotor plates is explored in this thesis. This stacked variable-reluctance motor (SVRM) has mechanically parallel air gaps, carrying magnetic flux in series. Magnetic models are developed to predict the maximum and minimum flux linkage of the motor, as well as the average torque over an electrical cycle. A geometric optimization is carried out using a combination of the Monte Carlo method and the simulated annealing method on a prototype, designed as a hip motor for a cheetah like robot. A one-phase 56 polepair prototype is designed and constructed to confirm the theory. The prototype can maintain its two 100 pm axial air gaps over a 5 inch diameter. The prototype, given all its practical constraints, produces 2 Nm of torque at 30 A phase current. After material property adjustments, the model predictions match well with the experimental performance of the prototype. Another round of optimization is done using the modified material properties, the best torque-to-mass ratio found for a ferrite motor with no more than 100 pole pairs is 8.4 Nm/kg. It is concluded that ferrite's flux carrying capacity is insufficient for high toque-to-mass ratio motors, given the requirements of the hip motor. A steel SVRM can have torque-to-mass ratio as high as 35.7 Nm/kg, but is restricted to low speed operation due to the slow magnetic diffusion.

Abstract:
A novel multilevel converter that is especially suited for high speed multi-megawatt switched reluctance motor drives operating at the medium voltage level is presented. The drive is capable of variable speed, four-quadrant operation. Each phase leg of the converter contains an arbitrary number of cascaded cells connected in series with the phase winding. Each cell contains a half-bridge chopper connected to a capacitor. The converter is named the cascaded chopper cell converter. The modular nature of the converter with the ability to add redundant cells makes it very reliable, which is a key requirement for medium voltage drive applications. A comprehensive control algorithm that overcomes the challenges of balancing and controlling cell capacitor voltages is also proposed. A suitable startup algorithm to limit startup current and switching losses, as well as ensure that cell capacitor voltages remain controlled at startup, is suggested. Details of the drive design such as component sizing and control parameter selection are also discussed. A detailed simulation model is developed and explained, and simulation results are provided for primary validation. Operation with standard current and speed control is first simulated. Then a scheme that gives way to a controller that operates the drive in single-pulse mode is developed and presented. This single-pulse control scheme controls the turn-on and turn-off angles, as well as the energization voltage level, in order to obtain high efficiency. Practical considerations related to the drive such as reliability, efficiency, and cost considerations are also discussed. Finally, a detailed comparison of the proposed converter to another competing converter is performed. Besides its scalability to high voltages and powers, the reliability and efficiency of the proposed converter makes it also a candidate for sub-megawatt applications requiring minimum downtime, or any application where high efficiency or improved performance is required. A small part of this work is also dedicated to brushless dc machines. Control methods for a new converter for brushless dc machines are proposed and verified via simulation. The main advantage of this converter with the proposed control is that it allows exact control of torque or speed up to twice the rated speed, without resorting to current phase advancing or other flux-weakening techniques.

Abstract:
Demand for energy-saving variable speed drives in low-cost, high-volume appliances has increased due to energy and environmental concerns and hence the need to comply with new regulations. Switched reluctance motor (SRMs) have been considered by many as attractive alternatives for brush commutated motors or permanent magnet brushless dc motors (PMBDCMs) in such cost-sensitive applications. The SRMs' unique features such as simple and fault-tolerant structure and unidirectional flow of their phase currents endow them with the possibility of various configurations on both machine and converter topologies for different applications. In the present study, three different variable-speed motor drive systems are proposed, studied, and implemented for their deployment in low-cost, high-volume applications with the power rating of 1.5kW or less. Two different two-phase SRMs and three different power converters are employed to realize three different low-cost drive systems. The first drive system is realized using a novel converter requiring only a single-controllable switch and an asymmetric two-phase 8/4 SRM capable of self-starting and four-quadrant operation. The second drive system is realized using another novel converter requiring two controllable switches, that way to achieve better control and utilization of the asymmetric 8/4 motor. The target applications for both drive systems are low power, low performance drives such as fans, hand tools, small appliances, etc. The third system is realized using a high-speed two-phase 4/2 SRM and a split ac source converter, which is designed for high-speed applications such as vacuum cleaners, ultracentrifuges, etc. The control and design aspects for each drive system are studied. Selection of optimal firing angles and optimal number of winding turns are also investigated. All of the drive systems are first demonstrated on the position sensor-based speed-control scheme. To make the drive system even more cost-competitive, operation without the position sensor using the novel parameter insensitive sensorless control scheme is proposed and implemented. Concept, analysis, simulation, and experimental verification of the proposed sensorless scheme are discussed in detail.

Abstract:
The use of variable speed drive (VSD) systems in the appliance industry is growing due to emerging high volume of fractional horsepower VSD applications. Almost all of the appliance VSDs have no input power factor correction (PFC) circuits. This results in harmonic pollution of the utility supply which could be avoided. The impact of the PFC circuit in the overall drive system efficiency, harmonic content, magnitude of the system input current and input power factor is particularly addressed in this dissertation along with the development of analytical methods applicable to the steady-state analysis of input power factor corrected VSD systems. Three different types of motors - the switched reluctance motor (SRM), permanent magnet brushless dc motor (PMBDC) and dc motor (DCM) are employed in this study. The C-dump converter topology, a single switch per phase converter, is adopted for the prototype SRM- and PMBDC-based VSD systems. The conventional full-bridge converter is used for DCM-based VSD systems. Four-quadrant controllers, utilizing PI speed and current control loops for the PMBDC- and DCM-based VSD system, are developed and their design results are verified with experiment and simulation. A single-quadrant controller with a PI speed feedback loop is employed for the SRM-based VSD system. The analysis of each type of VSD system includes development of loss models and establishment of proper operational modes. The magnitude of the input current harmonic spectra is measured and compared with and without a front-end PFC converter. One electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) standard, IEC 1000-3-2 which describes the limitation on harmonic current emission is modified for 120V ac system. This modified standard is utilized as the reference to evaluate the measured input current harmonics. The magnitude of input current harmonics for a VSD system are greatly reduced with PFC preregulators. While the input PFC circuit draws a near sinusoidal current from an ac source, it lowers the overall VSD system efficiency and increases cost of the overall system.

Simples à produire et robustes, les machines électriques à reluctance variable sont adaptées à des conditions sévères de fonctionnement, notamment à vitesse élevée. Les machines à reluctance variable (MRV) ne sont cependant que rarement utilisées principalement en raison du niveau élevé de bruit qu'elles émettent. Les travaux menés au cours de cette thèse visent, dans un premier temps, à qualifier le bruit émis par une machine à reluctance variable à haute vitesse de rotation. Conformément à ce qui est communément admis, il a été établi que le bruit émis en haute vitesse par la machine étudiée est dominé par le bruit aérocoustique. Le bruit aéroacoustique consiste en l'ensemble des émissions sonores issues de phénomènes aérodynamiques qui prennent naissance dans l'entrefer de la machine. Le second chapitre de l'étude est consacré à la mise en place d'une méthode d'estimation quantitative du bruit aéroacoustique émis par la machine étudiée. Le bruit aéroacoustique n'ayant pas encore été étudié de manière quantitative pour les machines électriques, l'étude se tourne vers les machines tournantes (turboréacteur, ventilateurs, ...) pour lesquelles la littérature sur le bruit aéroacoustique est abondante. Une méthode d'estimation du bruit aéroacosutique émis par la machine est alors construite. Cet estimateur se base sur une simulation de dynamique des fluides en deux dimensions de l'écoulement turbulent dans l'entrefer. Vient ensuite une confrontation des niveaux de bruit estimés avec des données expérimentales. Le bruit émis par la machine étudiée est calculé et mesuré pour deux géométries différentes du rotor sur une large plage de vitesses de rotation. La cohérence observée entre les résultats expérimentaux et numériques valide les hypothèses formulées au chapitre précédent tout en soulignant, comme attendu, les limites de la méthode de calcul en deux dimensions. Enfin, dans un quatrième chapitre, la méthode d'estimation du niveau de bruit aéroacoustique est utilisée afin d'explorer l'influence des paramètres géométriques de la machine sur son niveau de bruit
Due to its simple construction and robustness, Switched Reluctance Machine (SRM) is well suited for high rotation rates. SRM applications are however quite rare mainly because of the high level of noise this machine produces. First, this work aims to describe the noise emmitted by the studied SRM at high rotation rates. In accordance with the common understanding, it was proven that noise emitted by high rotation rates SRM is dominated by aeroacoustic noise. The aeroacoustic noise consists of the whole soundemission comig out of aerodynamic phenoma located in the air gap of the machine. Chapter two is concerned with the implementation of an estimation method for aeroacoustic noise level dedicated to the studied SRM. Aeroacoustic noise for electrical machines has not been quantitatively studied yet. Conversely, studies about aeroacoustic noise of rotating machinery (turboreactor, fan, ...) is quite abundant in the litterature. Consequently, this study focuses onrotating machinery to build an aeroacoustic noise estimation method for SRM. This estimationtool is based on a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) calculation of the turbulent ow in theair gap. Estimated noise levels are then compared with experimental data. Emitted noise level is estimated and measured for two distinct rotor geometries over a wide range of rotation rates. Calculation assumptions are validated by the consistency between experimental and numerical results. Asexpected, the 2D CFD simulation brings an over estimation of noise level. Finally, the fourth chapter deals with the use of the aeroacoustic noise estimation tool to study the influence of geometrical parameters of a SRM on its noise emission level

Este trabalho se insere num contexto de desenvolvimento da capacitação para aplicações de motores de relutância chaveados, com ênfase aos aspectos eletromagnéticos do acionamento. Inicialmente, são apresentados os principais aspectos construtivos do motor e de funcionamento do seu conversor. São discutidos os fluxos de energia do acionamento e sao apresentadas as suas características operacionais, bem como as possibilidades para o seu controle. Foi desenvolvida uma metodologia de projeto embasada numa formulação empírica e no método dos elementos finitos, implementado através do programa flux2d. Desta forma, foi projetado um protótipo para desenvolver meio newton-metro a três mil rotações por minuto. A formulação empírica baseia-se na adoção de diversas hipóteses simplificadoras do circuito ferromagnético. O método dos elementos finitos foi empregado com a finalidade da obtenção de um refinamento do dimensionamento do motor. O protótipo projetado foi fabricado e testado. Os objetivos dos ensaios foram a confrontação com os diversos valores calculados no projeto e a verificação do seu desempenho em diversas condições de carga. Finalizando o trabalho, os resultados obtidos são analisados, ressaltando-se os aspectos relevantes ocorridos durante o seu desenvolvimento. São também apresentadas, as atividades subsequêntes previstas.
This work is related to the development activities of switched reluctance motors, mainly on their electromagnetic characteristics. The motor\'s basic construction features and the converter\'s operation characteristics are showed, as well as, the energy flows, performance aspects and the effects of the control parameters. The principal elements of motor desigm are discussed. A method of design is developed based on empirical formulas and on finite elements method (using the software FLUX2D). Thus, a prototype was designed with ratings of 0,5 Nm at 3000 rpm. The empirical formulas are developed on a simplified model of the motor and taking into account the referred author\'s experience. The finite elements method was used with the aim of getting a design refinement, as well as, the static torque characteristics, inductances and flux as a function of rotor position and current. The prototype was built and tested. The tests were conducted to compare the actual with the designed parameters and to evaluate the performance characteristics. Finally, the results are analysed and the main facts observed during the development of the work are reported. The next planned activities are also showed.

Dans ce mémoire de thèse, nous présentons la conception, l'analyse de la stabilité, les simulations numériques et aussi les résultats des expérimentes concernant différents contrôleurs de vitesse mécanique du moteur à réluctance variable (MRV).Dans les deux premiers chapitres une brève description de la physique et de la construction du MRV est présenté ainsi que le problème du contrôle d'être abordé, c'est la commande de vitesse sans capteur. Il est aussi présenté l'état de l'art de ce problème et certains des solutions proposées dans d'autres travaux. On propose notre solution et on présente un petit résumé des articles scientifiques qui ont été publiés dans des magazines et des conférences.Dans le chapitre numéro trois est présenté le design du contrôleur adaptatif et sans capteur du MRV. On suppose, dans une première étape que seule la vitesse mécanique est inconnue et la stabilité exponentielle uniforme des erreurs de suivement est obtenue. Dans une deuxième étape, les conditions d'opération sont aggravées et, en plus de la vitesse, les paramètres physiques sont également supposées inconnues, la stabilité asymptotique uniforme est obtenue dans ce cas. L'estimation des paramètres du MRV est garantie grâce à la condition de persistance d'excitation. Cette commande se compose de deux boucles, une boucle interne basée sur un contrôleur de type PI2D qui est particulièrement intéressant parce qu'il est libre de modèle; cette boucle entraîne les variables mécaniques -la position et la vitesse- vers une référence désirée. Une deuxième boucle de contrôle externe prend le courant électrique vers un ' "courant de référence virtuelle" qui est généré sur la base d'une approche de partage de couple. Le contrôleur propose est testé au niveau de simulations numériques qui sont également présentés.Dans le quatrième chapitre, une nouvelle approche de modélisation du MRV est utilisée pour concevoir le contrôleur. Dans ce scénario, on suppose que l'ensemble de l'état et tous les paramètres physiques sont disponibles, cette approche est pensée pour être adapté au contrôleur basé sur observateur, recherche qui est en cours de développement. Le contrôleur est composé de deux boucles, également que celui qui a été mentionné précédemment. Ce contrôleur est sélectionné parce qu'il est approprié pour le contrôle d'équivalence vraie, qui il s'agit de remplacer les «mesures physiques» provenant d'un capteur par les «observations» provenant d'un observateur. La mise en oeuvre numérique est effectuée sur Simulink de Matlab.Enfin, dans le chapitre cinq, les résultats expérimentaux qui ont été effectués pour évaluer la performance des contrôleurs proposés -ce sont les PI2D et adaptatif PI2D pour le modèle simplifie ainsi que le PID pour le nouveau approche de modélisation- sont présentés. Dans la première partie, une brève description de la construction du banc de tests utilisé est présenté ainsi que quelques-unes caractéristiques techniques. Trois différentes profils de vitesse sont imposées à chacun des contrôleurs proposés -ce sont la tangente hyperbolique, la rampe saturée et la référence sinusoïdal- et de bonnes résultats sont obtenus en considérant que la variable contrôlée est la vitesse. Le dernier chapitre correspond aux conclusions de la recherche effectuée ainsi qu'aux travaux futurs
In this thesis dissertation we present the design, stability analysis, numerical simulations and physical experiments of different controllers designed to drive the mechanical velocity of the switched reluctance motor (SRM). In the First and Second Chapters a brief description of the physics and construction of the SRM is presented, as well as the problem of control to be aboard, that is the velocity sensorless control of motors and the state of the art of this problem. The proposed solution is introduced and a summary of the published papers as well as the contribution are also presented.In the Chapter number three is presented the velocity sensorless and adaptive control of the SRM. It is assumed, in a first stage, that only mechanical velocity is unknown, uniform exponential stability of the errors is achieved in this scenario. In a second stage, conditions are stressed and in addition to the velocity, physical parameters are also assumed unknown, uniform asymptotical stability is achieved in this case and parameters estimation is guaranteed under a persistence of excitation condition. This controller consists of two loops, an internal loop based on a PI2D–type controller which is of particular interest given it is free-model; this loop drives the mechanical variables –that is position and velocity- towards a desired reference. An external control loop takes the electrical current towards a ‘’virtual” current reference which is generated based on a torque share approach. The controller is tested on numerical simulations, which are also presented.In the fourth chapter, a new approach on the modeling of the SRM is utilized to design the controller, in this scenario is assumed that the whole state and all the physical parameters are available, however this approach is thought to be suitable to observer based controller, whose ongoing research is being performed. The controller is composed by two loops, similarly to the one mentioned previously. This controller is selected because it is suitable for certainty equivalence control, that is, to substitute the “measurements” by the “observations” coming from a virtual sensor. Numerical implementation is performed on Simulink of Matlab.Finally, in the Chapter five, the experimental results carried out to evaluate the performance of the proposed controllers are presented, these are the PI2D and the adaptive PI2D controllers for the simplified model and the $PID$ controller for the novel modeling approach. In the first part, a brief description of the construction of the utilized bench is presented as well as the some technical characteristics. Three different velocity profiles were imposed to each of the overmentioned controllers –these are the so called smooth step, the saturated ramp and the sinusoidal reference- and good results, considering that the controlled variable is the velocity, were obtained. The last chapter corresponds to the conclusions of the performed research as well as to the future work

In this dissertation, a novel two-phase switched reluctance machine (SRM) with a stator comprised of E-core structure having minimum stator core iron is presented for low-cost high-performance applications. In addition, three new magnetic structures for the E-core SRM comprising two segmented stator cores or a monolithic stator core are proposed for good manufacturability, mechanically robustness, ease of assembly, and electromagnetic performance improvement. Each E-core stator in the segmented structure has three poles with two small poles at the ends having windings and a large center pole containing no copper windings. The common stator pole at the centers in the segmented E-core is shared by both phases during operation. Other benefits of the common poles contributing to performance enhancement are short flux paths, mostly flux-reversal-free-stator, constant minimum reluctance around air gap, and wide pole arc equal to one rotor pole pitch. Therefore, two additional common poles in the monolithic E-core configuration are able to significantly improve efficiency due to more positive torque and less core loss by the unique design. Using a full MEC analysis, the effect of the common-pole structure on torque enhancement is analytically verified. Efficiency estimated from the dynamic simulation is higher by 7% and 12% at 2000 rpm and by 3% and 7 % at 3000 rpm for the segmented and single-body SRMs, respectively, compared to a conventional SRM with four stator poles and two rotor poles. The new E-core SRMs are suitable for low-cost high-performance applications which are strongly cost competitive since all the new E-core SRMs have 20% cost savings on copper and the segmented E-core SRMs have 20% steel savings as well. Strong correlation between simulated and experimentally measured results validates the feasibility of the E-core common-pole structure and its performance. A simple step-by-step analytical design procedure suited for iterative optimization with small computational effort is developed with the information of the monolithic E-core SRM, and the proposed design approach can be applied for other SRM configurations as well. For investigating thermal characteristics in the two-phase single-body E-core SRM, the machine is modeled by a simplified lumped-parameter thermal network in which there are nine major parts of the motor assembly.

Dans le premier chapitre, un rappel des principes de fonctionnement et d'alimentation des moteurs à reluctance variable à double saillance est rappelé. Différents types d'alimentations faisant appel a des convertisseurs a commutation douce et des ondes sinusoïdales sont présentées. A partir de la constatation que le sens du courant n'est pas impose par principe, un convertisseur rustique est propose. Ce convertisseur direct constitue d'un triac par phase du moteur est utilise pour injecter du courant dans les phases du moteur pendant la croissance de l'inductance. Une commande avec limitation de courant n'est pas nécessaire avec ce type d'alimentation. Les résultats obtenus avec cette alimentation sont étudiés dans le chapitre 3. Le couple moyen en fonction de la vitesse est explicite, ainsi que l'évolution des pertes dans le moteur. Deux modes de fonctionnement en fonction du rapport de la fréquence du réseau a la fréquence électrique du moteur sont distingues. Enfin, le courant absorbe par le moteur est étudié et une méthode de compensation partielle du facteur de puissance est proposée. Dans le chapitre 4, une amélioration permettant de réduire l'ondulation du courant absorbe est étudiée.

A finalidade deste trabalho é desenvolver uma contribuição ao projeto de geradores e motores de relutância chaveados. A primeira etapa do projeto consiste no dimensionamento inicial da máquina através de métodos analíticos convencionais [01]para, em seguida, desenvolver o seu refinamento usando o Método dos Elementos Finitos acoplado com as equações de circuitos elétricos. Inicialmente, é apresentada uma abordagem atualizada dos aspectos construtivos e operacionais deste equipamento, comuns aos dois modos de funcionamento, bem como dos aspectos relevantes da metodologia computacional utilizada. Apresentam-se, em seguida, os resultados das simulações conduzidas para a obtenção das características de torque estático, do fluxo concatenado e das indutâncias, em função da posição angular do rotor e da corrente, as suas implicações no projeto e a sua utilização para a definição das condições operacionais dinâmicas a serem simuladas. Em seguida, são apresentados os resultados das simulações em regime permanente e em transitórios operacionais da máquina elétrica funcionando de uma forma integrada com o seu conversor eletrônico dedicado. No fechamento deste trabalho, estes resultados são discutidos e comparados com alguns ensaios realizados. Apresenta-se também os possíveis desdobramentos para a continuidade do projeto deste tipo de equipamento. O enfoque essencial deste trabalho é a máquina elétrica e os seus resultados propiciam também uma orientação para a definição dos requisitos de projeto do conversor eletrônico e do sistema de controle.
This work aims to provide a contribution to the project of switched reluctance generators and motors. The first stage of the project consists of initial dimensioning of the machine through conventional analytical methods[1] followed by its refinement by using the Finite-element Method coupled with circuit equations. An updated approach on the constructive and operational aspects common to both the ways of the equipment, as well as relevant aspects of the computational methodology used are initially presented. Results of simulations carried out to obtain torque characteristics, flux-linkage and inductance, as a function of angular position of rotor and current, their implications in the project and their use to define dynamic operational condition to be simulated are then showed. Sequentially, results of the steady-state and transients operational simulations of the electric machine working in an integrated way with its dedicated electronic converter are presented. In the closing of this work, these results are discussed and compared to some of the tests performed. Related subjects for continuation of the project of this type of equipment are also presented. The main focus of this work is the electric machine and its results also provide an orientation to the definition of requirements to the project of electronic converter and control system.

Le MRVCE est modélisé en utilisant la technique par réseau de perméances. En même temps, la technique de commande électronique peut être facilement intégrée dans le modèle pour effectuer l'analyse dynamique du fonctionnement du moteur. L'outil d'optimisation réalisé utilise l'algorithme par essaim de particules, modifié pour résoudre des problèmes multi-objectif. Les objectifs sont liés à la qualité des caractéristiques de fonctionnement du moteur, en temps que les variables d'optimisation concernent la géométrie du moteur aussi que la technique de commande. Les performances de l'algorithme sont comparées avec ceux de l'algorithme génétique (NSGA-II) et d'une implémentation classique de l'algorithme par essaim de particules multi-objectif.Finalement, un prototype de moteur à réluctance variable est construit et le fonctionnement du MRVCE alimenté depuis l'onduleur triphasé en pont complet est implémenté et les outils de modélisation et d'optimisation sont validés

Les nombreux avantages des machines a reluctance variable expliquent le développement de leur utilisation, principalement pour des applications a fortes contraintes économiques ou en milieu difficile. Malheureusement, de part sa structure, ce type de moteur présente un couple instantané naturellement pulsatoire. Nous avons recherche un mode de commande permettant d'annuler -théoriquement- l'ondulation du couple polyphasé instantané, en produisant une forme d'onde de couple monophase trapézoïdale. Après avoir défini des coefficients de dimensionnement permettant de caractériser le rapport puissance silicium du convertisseur/puissance mécanique de la machine, nous avons optimise les formes d'onde de courant d'alimentation et chiffre l'influence de la forme de la caractéristique magnétique de la machine (et donc de sa structure) sur ces coefficients. Dans un deuxième temps, nous avons cherche qu'elle était l'influence des limitations -en tension- du convertisseur statique de la machine sur la forme du couple. En effet, ces limitations ne permettront pas d'injecter les formes d'onde de courant optimale, des que la vitesse augmente. Afin de valider le mode d'alimentation que nous avons utilise dans nos calculs, nous avons recherche, pour une machine existante, des lois de commande permettant de minimiser les pulsations du couple polyphasé. Ces lois de commande ont été testées sur un banc d'essai, l'ensemble des boucles de contrôle étant confié à un processeur de traitement du signal. Afin de vérifier les taux d'ondulation de couple calcules, nous avons utilise un système de mesure direct du couple instantané fourni par la machine. Nous avons alors obtenu, à basse vitesse, des taux d'ondulation de couple tout a fait satisfaisants

O motor linear à relutância variável (MLRV) é uma máquina elétrica alimentada em corrente contínua, com fases excitadas numa sequência determinada. Caracterizado por operar numa ampla faixa de variação de velocidade, é utilizado em aplicações lineares que convertem energia elétrica em força e movimento de translação. A necessidade de dispositivos comutadores de corrente e um sistema de controle requer boa estimativa do perfil de indutância do motor. No entanto, uma vez que o maior entreferro dificulta o cálculo analítico, este perfil deve ser obtido através de métodos numéricos. Neste contexto, este trabalho apresenta um motor linear do tipo fluxo longitudinal de 4 fases, destinado a mover um sistema de translação deslizante de abertura e fechamento. A robustez, a simplicidade de construção e a potência reduzida foram decisivos na escolha do tipo de máquina. A análise via elementos finitos (AEF) é aplicada a fim de determinar o desempenho, qualificado pela auto-indutância das bobinas de fase e pela capacidade de produção da força de propulsão. A AEF também é utilizada na avaliação do fator de ondulação da força (force ripple), altamente presente neste tipo de motor, além da produção de vibração e ruído acústico, decorrentes do mesmo.
The linear variable reluctance motor (LVRM) is an electric machine fed by direct current with excited phases in a given sequence. Characterized by operating in a wide range of speed variation, it is used in linear applications that converts electric energy into force and translation movement. The need for current switching devices and a control system requires a good estimate of the motor’s inductance profile. However, since the larger air gap makes analytical calculation difficult, this profile must be obtained by numerical methods. In this context, this work presents a linear motor of the 4 phase transverse flow type designed to move a sliding translation system of opening and closing. Robustness, simplicity of construction and reduced power are decisive in the choice of machine type. The finite element analysis (FEA) is applied in order to determine the performance, qualified by the self-inductance of phase coils and the propulsion force production capacity. The FEA is also used in the evaluation of the force ripple factor, highly present in this type of motor, besides the production of vibration and acoustic noise arising from ripple factor.

It also overviews a constructional diversity of these motors, the fundamentals of operating modes and characteristics. This part discuses features of stepper motors as a part of automation control system, presents the main counting equations and applications with stepper motors. The practical part includes the mathematical model of stepper motor and the Simulink model that was developed for software package “Matlab”. Those models formed the basis for analysis of stepper motor dynamic characteristics in various operating modes (wave drive, full step drive, half step drive, microstepping, reversing, braking).

In this study, a model is developed to represent doubly-salient magnetic circuits and to fit finite element analysis for the aim of obtaining a set of normalized normal force, tangential force, and permeance variation data. To obtain the desired data FE field solution method is used. The reliability of finite element results have been verified by three steps
first, comparing the numerical results with analytically calculated permeance, second, by solving two switch reluctance motors and comparing the results with the measurements of static torque and flux linkage. The third step is by using the normalized data obtained by solving the model with the aid of an available software that is capable to predict the behavior of switched reluctance motors. Once the reliability of the data is assured, the desired data set is produced and presented in tables.

Improved actuator point-to-point positioning performance, as measured by settling time, has been demonstrated in the context of manufacturing automation applications such as circuit board assembly and other product-transfer operations. The control objective is to move a single mass in a single axis from a starting position to a target position following the fastest possible motion trajectory while meeting final-position accuracy requirements. The actuator's achievable force that is available for acceleration is the fundamental variable that determines optimal settling time. The actuator technology employed is the linear variable reluctance motor. Mathematical motor models and simulation programs have been developed to perform several tasks necessary for demonstrating improved actuator performance: (i) optimal commutation under force ripple constraints has been computed to determine ripple-specified force limits and to provide excitation waveforms necessary for force production, (ii) motion profiles for several positioning task scenarios have been generated based on computed ripple-specified force limits, (iii) state space integral position control simulations have been performed to evaluate the degree of success of the proposed relaxation of force ripple constraints in improving settling time and (iv) the computed settling times for positioning tasks have been examined in relation to the copper losses associated with them in order to assess the trade-off. It has been shown that higher force capability is achieved when force-ripple constraints, which have been customarily emphasized in positioning applications, are relaxed. The higher capability is exploited by adopting faster motion trajectories, which are then imposed under feedback control to achieve faster settling time. Improved force capability with relaxed ripple constraints is demonstrated by generating average force versus speed capability curves under ripple constraints ranging from minimal ripple to unconstrained ripple. Improved positioning performance, with relaxed ripple constraints and without violating the final-position accuracy specification, is demonstrated by computing and comparing settling time for multiple positioning tasks with trajectories based on both extremes of force capability, lowest (no-ripple) and highest (unconstrained-ripple) force limits. The results have been demonstrated for two LVR motor configurations: one motor configuration represents typical (switched) linear and rotary variable reluctance motors while the other exhibits features of both switched and synchronous varieties of variable reluctance motors.

The principal application of stepping motors to date is in low power open loop positioning systems. It is widely known that self synchronisation offers a significant improvement in dynamic performance in addition to step integrity. The necessary positional feedback is traditionally provided by a position encoder. However the fitting of such a device is usually expensive and inconvenient. Previous analyses of stator current waveforms of motors driven from the conventional L/R drive have revealed rotor position dependant characteristics which can be used to provide self positional feedback. A variety of different schemes using both on and off phases have been proposed in the literature. Successful self synchronisation utilising some of these characteristics has been reported for multiple stack variable reluctance stepping motors. When the active suppression drive is used, the variable reluctance stepping motor offers high specific output and efficiency making it a contender in controlled speed drive applications as well. Lower manufacturing cost makes the single stack motor additionally attractive. A single stack stepping motor driven under self synchronised control from self positional feedback and using active suppression drives is potentially an efficient cost effective drive offering precision speed and position control. The single stack motor has significant mutual inductances between phases. This coupling considerably complicates the task of obtaining self positional feedback, especially when active suppression drives are used. This research investigates the suitability of the single stack variable reluctance stepping motor to position encoderless self synchronisation when driven by an active suppression drive and chopper current limiting. An algorithm for obtaining the necessary self positional feedback has been developed and the equipment necessary to implement it has been designed and constructed. Certain characteristics which restrict the performance of the algorithm have been observed during operation. These characteristics have been explained in terms of the significant mutual inductances between phases inherent in the single stack motor. A linear model of the on and de-energising phase currents has been developed and implemented numerically. The results have been used to generate theoretical torque vs speed plots. These plots show good agreement with the measured performance. A linear model of the self positional feedback algorithm has been developed to further the analytical understanding of the advances made experimentally. The numerical solutions identify the cause of the performance restrictions and simulate the nature of the observed self positional feedback characteristics closely. A suggestion is made for continuing research which is believed likely to yield significant results.

Le mémoire traite de la machine à réluctance variable en proposant d'une manière simultanée et du point de vue conception des solutions à ses deux inconvénients majeurs à savoir les ondulations de couple et les efforts radiaux. Les premières se propagent le long de la chaine de transmission diminuant ainsi le confort des usagers et les deuxièmes sont à l’origine d’une nuisance sonore. Dans une première partie et en s’intéressant à une structure axiale caractérisée par une faible force radiale, un bilan sur cette structure est donc établi. En effet, une configuration à deux stators et un rotor est la plus adéquate pour éventuellement remplacer la machine radiale de référence. Cette structure axiale est comparée à cette machine de référence après avoir établi des règles de passage d’une structure à une autre. Un premier passage est effectué en gardant le même encombrement et un deuxième passage en dimensionnant la machine axiale pour satisfaire le même cahier des charges que la machine radiale. Dans une deuxième partie, le travail s’oriente vers la modification de la structure radiale de la machine de référence et son optimisation. Plusieurs modifications sont proposées dont une structure avec une cale magnétique qui est la plus performante. Des optimisations géométriques à l’aide de l’algorithme génétique sur un point de fonctionnement sont ensuite effectuées pour remédier aux deux problèmes. A la fin, un récapitulatif de plusieurs structures optimisées est proposé pour servir de référence. Le choix de la machine la plus adéquate pourra donc être effectué en faisant un compromis entre la maximisation du couple, la réduction de ses ondulations et la réduction des efforts radiaux
This report deals with switched reluctance motor by offering design solutions to the drawbacks of torque ripples and radial forces in the same time. Torque ripples reduce the user comfort and radial forces are the origin of noise. In the first part, an axial structure characterized by low radial force is analysed. Indeed, an axial configuration with two stators and one rotor is the most appropriate to replace the reference radial machine. Ones the rules of passage from one structure to another are established, the axial structure is then compared to the reference one. A first passage is made by keeping the same volume and a second one by sizing the axial machine with the same specifications as the radial one. In the second part, the work concerns the modification of radial structure of the reference machine and its optimization. Several modifications are proposed including a structure with a magnetic wedge which is the most efficient. Geometric optimization using genetic algorithm are then performed on operating points to remedy the both problems. In the end, several optimized structures are proposed. The choice of the most suitable machine can be done by making a compromise between the torque maximization, reducing its ripples and reducing radial forces

Abstract:
The design and implementation of a control system to introduce randomization into the control of a variable reluctance motor (VRM) is presented. The goal is to reduce noise generated by radial vibrations of the stator. Motor phase commutation angles are dithered by 1 or 2 mechanical degrees to investigate the effect of randomization on acoustic noise. VRM commutation points are varied using a uniform probability density function and a 4 state Markov chain among other methods. The theory of VRM and inverter operation and a derivation of the major source of acoustic noise are developed. The experimental results show the effects of randomization. Uniform dithering and Markov chain dithering both tend to spread the noise spectrum, reducing peak noise components. No clear evidence is found to determine which is the optimum randomization scheme. The benefit of commutation angle randomization in reducing VRM loudness as perceived by humans is found to be questionable.

TrÃs mÃtodos experimentais foram utilizados para a validaÃÃo do projeto via Elementos Finitos: mÃtodo de determinaÃÃo da impedÃncia com tensÃo CA, mÃtodo do tempo de subida de corrente DC de fase e mÃtodo do tempo de descida de corrente DC de fase. Um estudo comparativo foi realizado como forma de efetivar a validaÃÃo. Todas as tarefas de simulaÃÃo e de mediÃÃo foram realizadas utilizando um microcomputador. Para a realizaÃÃo da simulaÃÃo do projeto foi utilizado um software de simulaÃÃo numÃrica com anÃlise dos Elementos Finitos (CST STUDIO SUITE TM 2010Â) em trÃs dimensÃes, utilizando para tanto, malhas tetraÃdricas e hexaÃdricas. Para as tarefas de mediÃÃo, foi utilizada tambÃm uma placa de aquisiÃÃo de dados (DAQ) integrada a duas interfaces: do LabView e Signal Express ambos desenvolvidos pelo o mesmo fabricante da placa de aquisiÃÃo (National Instruments) com o objetivo de determinar a indutÃncia por fase do MRRV. A partir dos valores obtidos de indutÃncias por fase, foi calculado o fluxo concatenado por fase. GrÃficos de fluxo concatenado por corrente e perfis de indutÃncias para sete posiÃÃes sÃo apresentados e entÃo comparados com a simulaÃÃo por AEF. Tabelas evidenciando as diferenÃas de alguns valores entre os mÃtodos em termo de porcentagem sÃo apresentadas e discutidas. Uma avaliaÃÃo sobre todos os mÃtodos foi feita, evidenciando aspectos positivos, negativos, limitaÃÃes e sugestÃes de melhoria dos mesmos. This paper presents a study on the characteristics of a static magnetization VRRM - Variable Reluctance Rotating Motor â 1 hp, based on the simulation of machine design using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) with 3D tetrahedral and hexahedral meshes intending to investigate which meshes is the most suited to this study. Three experimental methods to validate the design via Finite Elements were used: method for determining the impedance with AC voltage, the rising time method of DC current phase and falling time of DC current phase method. All tasks of simulation and measurement were performed using a personal computer. To perform the design simulation a numeric simulation software was used with finite element analysis (CST STUDIO SUITE TM 2010Â) in three dimensions, using both, tetrahedral and hexahedral meshes. For measurement tasks also a data acquisition board (DAQ) integrated with two interfaces was used: the LabView and Signal Express both developed by the same manufacturer of the acquisition board (National Instruments) aiming to determine the inductance per phase of the VRRM. From the values obtained of inductance per phase the flux linkage per phase was calculated. Graphs of flux linkage with current and inductance profiles for seven positions are shown and compared with the simulation FEA. Tables showing the values of some differences between the methods in terms of percentage are presented and discussed. An evaluation of all methods was done, showing positives and negatives aspects, limitations and suggestions to improve them. The machine was a studied Variable Reluctance Rotating Motor 6/4 (6 stator poles and 4 poles on the rotor), three-phase, 1 hp, rated current of 10A and speed of 2.000 rpm, designed by the Research Group on Automation and Robotics, Department of Electrical Engineering, Federal University of CearÃ.

Cette thèse de doctorat s'inscrit dans un projet pour le développement du véhicule électrique piloté par la société Renault. Il répond aux prévisions d’exploitation de véhicules électriques pour des déplacements interurbains et urbains afin d’améliorer les aspects environnementaux. L'objectif de nos travaux a été de développer un outil capable de prédire le bruit d'origine électromagnétique produit par des machines à rotor passifs : machine à réluctance variable, sur une large plage de vitesse. Pour cela, le développement d’un modèle vibro-acoustique reposant sur les équations aux dérivées partielles permet d’obtenir une bonne estimation des vibrations et du bruit de la machine pour une force donnée. Cette modélisation analytique couplée à un outil éléments finis, permettant ainsi d’estimer précisément les pressions radiales d’origine magnétique, fournit sous forme de sonagramme le bruit de la machine sur une large plage de vitesse. Cette approche dite hybride « numérique et analytique » offre l’avantage d’un très bon compromis temps de calcul – précision afin de concevoir des machines peu bruyantes. Enfin une analyse des effets de la saturation de ces machines ainsi qu’une analyse harmonique par produit de convolution sont fournis
This thesis is related to the development of an electric car by Renault. This vehicle respects the constraints in order to improve environmental aspects. The aim of this work is to develop a tool capable of predicting electromagnetic noise generated by motors with passive rotor: switched reluctance machine, for a large range of speed.For that, a vibro-acoustic model based on an analytical approach was developed. It gives a good estimation of the vibrations and noise of the machine for a given force. This analytical model is coupled with Finite Element models which allows accurate estimation of radial Maxwell pressure and gives the sonogram of the radiated noise regarding a large range of speed.The advantage of this “hybrid” approach (Finite Element and analytical) is the very good compromise accuracy/computational time in order to design less noisy motors. Finally, an analysis of the saturation effect and harmonic analysis using convolution were performed

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The position sensorless controllability of the reluctance synchronous machine (RSM) is investigated in this thesis with the focus on industry applications where variable and dynamic torque is required from startup up to rated speed. Two low speed as well as one medium to high speed position sensorless control (PSC) method for RSMs are investigated. These methods are extended to operate in the entire rated speed region with a hybrid PSC structure that makes use of phase locked-loop synchronisation and a hysteresis changeover method. It is shown in this thesis that PSC of the lateral rib rotor RSM is not possible from zero up to ± 0.2 p.u current. It is shown through finite element (FE) simulations that PSC of the ideal rotor RSM however, is possible at zero reference current. A novel construction method is used to build two ideal rotor RSMs. Measured flux linkage curve results of the ideal rotor RSMs correlate well with simulation results and it is shown that the electrical angle of the machine can be tracked successfully at zero reference current. The FE simulation package is used to compare the saliency of the RSM on a per-unit scale to three types of field intensified permanent magnet (FI-PM) synchronous machines and a field weakening interior permanent magnet synchronous machine. It is shown that the saliency of the RSM is larger than that of the investigated PM machines from zero up to rated load. It is thus concluded that the RSM is well suited to saliency-based PSC (SB-PSC) methods, which are used to control synchronous machines at startup and low speeds. The hybrid PSC methods developed in this thesis, are tested and evaluated on three proposed industry applications. The first is a reluctance synchronous wind generator with an inverter output LC filter. The LC filter allows long cables to be used and reduces the voltage stress on the stator windings of the machine. The combination of the LC filter and hybrid PSC method allows the power electronics and controller to be stationed in the base of the turbine tower. A new stator quantity estimation method is derived to omit the need of current and voltage sensors on the machine side of the LC filter. Good maximum power point tracking laboratory results are shown with the high frequency injection-assisted hybrid PSC method. The second application investigated is a position sensorless controlled variable gear electric vehicle (EV) RSM drive. Simulation and measured results show good torque capabilities of the position sensorless controlled EV RSM. It is shown through simulation results that the fundamental current harmonic is dominant in the demodulation scheme of the high frequency injection position sensorless control (HFIPSC) method due to the high current rating of the proposed RSM. The HFI-PSC method is extended to reduce the effect of the fundamental current harmonic in the demodulation scheme without adding any additional filters. The final investigated application is a novel mine scraper winch, which uses two position sensorless controlled RSMs to retrieve ore from the blast site underground. The new design improves on the safety, efficiency and durability of the current scraper winch design. Measured results show that the position sensorless controlled winch RSM is able to deliver rated startup torque with both investigated SB-PSC methods. Finally an automation method is implemented and tested to limited the applied force on the scraper and automatically free itself when stuck.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die posisie sensorlose beheer eienskappe van die reluktansie sinchroonmasjien (RSM) word in hierdie tesis ondersoek met die fokus op industriële toepassings waar varierende dinamiese draaimoment vereis word vanaf stilstand tot by ken spoed. Twee lae spoed- en een ho¨e spoed posisie sensorlose beheer (PSB) metodes vir RSMe is ondersoek. Hierdie metodes is uitgebrei om twee hibriede PSB metodes to skep wat die RSM van stilstand tot by kenspoed posisie sensorloos kan beheer. Die ontwikkelde hibriede metodes maak gebruik van ’n histerese oorskakelings skema en fase geslote lus sinchronisasie Daar word in hierdie tesis bevestig dat die laterale rib RSM nie beheer kan word met die geondersoekte PSB metodes by nul stroom nie. Eindige element simulasie resultate wys egter daarop dat die ideale rotor RSM wel beheer kan word met die geondersoekte metodes by nul stroom. ’n Nuwe konstruksie metode is voorgestel om twee ideale rotor RSMe to bou. Gemete vloed omsluiting kurwes resultate korreleer baie goed met dié van die eindige element simulasies. Gemete resultate wys ook daarop dat PSB van die nuwe masjiene moontlik is by nul stroom. ’n Eindige element pakket is gebruik om die speek-koëffissiënt van die RSM te vergelyk met drie tipes veld-versterkte permanent magneet masjiene, asook een veld verswakte permanent magneet versinkte masjien. Die simulasie resultate wys dat die RSM se speek-koëffissiënt hoër is as die van die geondersoekte permanent magneet masjiene. Die RSM is dus geskik vir speek-koëffissiënt georienteerde PSB metodes, wat hoofsaaklik by stilstand en lae spoed gebruik word. Die ontwikkelde hibried PSB metodes is getoets en geëvalueer met drie voorgestelde industriële toepassings. Die eerste is ’n reluktansie sinchroon wind generator met ’n omsetter uittree laagdeurlaat filter. Die laagdeurlaat filter laat toe dat langer kabels vanaf die omsetter na die generator gebruik kan word. Die kombinasie van die laagdeurlaat filter en die PSB metodes laat toe dat die drywingselektronika en die beheerders in die toring basis geplaas kan word. Dit kan die gewig van die nasel verminder. Goeie maksimum drywingspunt volging laboratorium resultate word getoon met die hoë frekwensie ondersteunde hibried PSB metode. Die tweede geondersoekte toepassing is ’n posisie sensorlose beheerde, varierende ratkas elektriese voertuig RSM. Goeie simulasie en gemete draaimoment resultate van die RSM word getoon. Simulasie resultate toon dat die fundamentele q-as stroom harmoniek dominant is in die demodulasie skema van die hoë frekwensie PSB metode, as gevolg van die hoë ken stroom van die motor. Die hoë frekwensie PSB metode is uitgebrei om die fundamentele stroom harmoniek te onderdruk in die demodulasie skema sonder om enige filters by te voeg. Die finale toepassing is ’n nuwe myn windas wat van twee posisie sensorlose beheerde RSMe gebruik maak om klippe ondergronds te verplaas vanaf die ontploffings area. Die voorgestelde ontwerp verbeter die huidige ontwerp ten opsigte van die veiligheid, energie effektiwiteit en robuustheid. Gemete resultate wys dat ken draaimoment moontlik is met altwee speek-koëffissiënt metodes. ’n Automasie metode, wat die maksimum draaimoment op die windas beperk en automaties homself bevry indien hy vasval, is voorgestel en geëvalueer.

Dans un contexte mondial régi par de multiples facteurs économiques, énergétiques et environnementaux, la transition vers des modes de transport à zéro émission polluante semble inévitable. De ce fait, les constructeurs automobiles s’investissent de plus en plus dans le développement de groupes motopropulseurs électriques afin d’anticiper les besoins du marché. Parmi les différentes technologies de machines électriques considérées pour cette application, la Machine à Réluctance Variable à Double Saillance (MRVDS) présente des caractéristiques très attractives pour le milieu industriel.Les travaux présentés dans cette thèse visent à élaborer des solutions qui répondent aux points qui bloquent encore l’adoption de la MRVDS dans les véhicules électriques. Dans un premier temps, la commande en couple d’une MRVDS destinée à la traction électrique est analysée. En prenant en considération les exigences imposées par l’application envisagée, une stratégie de commande en couple est développée en intégrant deux méthodes complémentaires sur le plan de fonctionnement de la MRVDS choisie.Dans la deuxième partie, l’asservissement en courant est abordé. Les problématiques du contrôle propres à la MRVDS à forte dynamique de courant sont d’abord identifiées. Ensuite, deux régulateurs de courant, qui répondent à différents conditions d’implantation, sont présentés et validés par simulation.La dernière partie de cette thèse aborde le problème des à-coups d’accélération induits à basse vitesse et de leurs répercussions sur l'agrément de conduite. En effet, ce type de motorisation électrique introduit un nouvel aspect sur cette problématique. Une loi de commande anti-à-coups, composée de deux actions, est développée. Les simulations ont montré la conformité de la performance obtenue en utilisant la loi de commande proposée avec le cahier des charges industriel visé
In a global context governed by multiple economic, energetic and environmental factors, the transition towards transportation modes with zero polluting emissions seems inevitable. Hence, automotive manufacturers are investing increasingly in the development of electric powertrains in anticipation of the market needs. Among the different electric motors technologies considered for this application, the switched reluctance motor (SRM) presents attractive characteristics for the industry.The work presented in this thesis aims to elaborate solutions in response to the points still hindering the adoption of the SRM in electric vehicles. First, torque regulation of an SRM intended for an electric traction is analyzed. Taking into consideration the requirements of the application in hand, a regulation strategy is developed through the integration of two methods which complement each other over the studied SRM range of operation.In the second part, the subject of current regulation in the SRM is discussed. The issues related to current regulation in SRMs disposing of high current dynamics are firstly identified. Then, two current regulators, each adapted to different implementation conditions, are presented and validated through simulations.The last part of this thesis discusses the acceleration jerks induced at very low speeds and their repercussions on driving comfort . Indeed, electric traction introduces a new aspect on this rather classic issue. An anti-jerk control law, composed of two control actions, is developed. Simulations have shown the conformity of the performance obtained with the proposed control law with the target industrial specifications

Modélisation des équations électromagnétiques 3D couplées avec les circuits d'alimentation électrique et le déplacement de parties mobiles, dans le cas de machines électriques tournantes. La formulation choisie utilise, comme inconnue principale, le potentiel vecteur magnétique nonjaugé, int~rpolé sur des éléments finis d'arête. Le caractère compatible de la formulation est assuré par l'introduction d'un potentiel vecteur électrique pour représenter le courant source, tant pour les inducteurs filaires maillés que pour les inducteurs filaires non-maillés. Le circuit électrique d'alimentation est analysé par la méthode des potentiels électriques intégrés dans le temps et les systèmes électrique et magnétique sont résolus simultanément. La connexion entre les parties mobiles est les parties fixes se fait par une technique d'interpolation des maillages, adaptée aux éléments d'arête. Des méthodes numériques spécifiques ont été développées et implantées, notamment pour l'intégration en pas-à-pas dans le temps du système temporel du premier ordre et pour la résolution du système matriciel résultant. L'ensemble des développements effectués a été validé sur un moteur à réluctance variable.

Abstract:
In this thesis, the feasibility to integrate an brake disc and electric machine is investigated. In wheel motors (IWMs) have several advantages, such as saving space in the vehicle, individual and direct control at the wheels and the absence of a mechanical transmission. However, today’s IWMs are heavy and, thus, negatively affect the driving performance of the vehicle due to the increase of the unsprung mass. By integrating an already existing part in the wheel, this increase of the unsprung mass can be minimized. The brake disc manages high temperatures, a significant wear in rough environ-ment, which puts high demands on the rotor. The second part of the machine, the stator, will be significantly affected by the high temperatures of the rotor. The temperatures of the stator are transferred by convection, conduction and radiation from the rotor or brake disc. Liquid cooling of the stator back is analyzed as a potential solution for handling the high temperatures. In order to analyze the feasibility of the concept, thermal, electric and mechanical modelling has been used. The evaluation whether it is possible or not to integrate the brake disc has been with regard to the results of weight, cost, thermal tolerance and electric performance.
I detta arbete undersöks möjligheten att integrera en bromsskiva med elmaskin. Hjul-motorer har flera fördelar, bland annat sparas utrymme i själva bilen, individuell kontroll samt drivning av hjulen utan mekaniska transmissioner. Men hjulmotorer som kan användas idag väger oftast så pass mycket att den odämpade massan ökar kritiskt och köregenskaper av fordonet då blir lidande. Genom att integrera en befintlig del i hjulet kan ¨okningen av odämpade massan minskas. Att använda bromsskivan som rotor, kräver att denna tål temperaturer ¨over 500◦C samt påfrestningar och slitage som en vanlig mekanisk friktionsbroms måste uthärda. Den andra delen av maskinen, statorn kommer även denna att påverkas av de höga temperaturerna av bromsskivan som kommer ledas via konvektion, konduktion och strålning. Möjligheten att kyla statorn med vätska och om detta är tillräckligt undersöks. För att analyserna genomförbarheten av projektet har termiska, elektriska och mekaniska modeller använts. Resultaten har analyserats där maskinens vikt, kostnad, termisk tålighet och elektrisk prestanda har legat till grund för bedömningen om lösningen; att integrera en broms-skiva med elmaskin är rimlig eller ej.
