Full textFaced with increased competition among logistics companies, streamlining of the throughput and environmental impact is becoming increasingly important. In order for efficiency improvement to take place, continuous work is required to find the non-value-creating activities and eliminate them to develop companies’ work process. Thus, it is important to chart the problems, find the reasons for these activities and eliminate them. The purpose of this study is to identify which non-value-creating activities exist and which activities have a negative environmental impact. Furthermore, the study also includes an investigation of how an improvement can take advantage of improvement tools to find alternative solutions. The case study has been carried out at the company Holgers Stugmaterial AB at the point where the work process begins, and an order arrives to the point when the return is carried out and mapped. Secondary data have been collected through scientific reports, subject and course literature to provide knowledge on the subject. Through interviews and observations, a mapping of the work process has been done.Thereafter, problems have been identified through various improvement tools. Those tools were able to find non-value-creating activities and the activities that have a negative environmental impact. The results of the study show that thanks to the use of improvement tools such as Ishikawa diagram, 5 Whys and PICK-diagram, a number of non-value-creating activities can be found. The most important non-value-creating activities found were the company's warehouse layout which can be improved through a structured 5S work. Then comes the problem of the information flow between those responsible and the staff regarding improvement work and environmental work. This can be solved through participation from staff. Furthermore, the company's use of shrinkage load and their extra transports were the two that most affected the environment.

Full textIn the construction industry it is important to find ways of working that in the long term lowers construction costs so as to produce a product that requires less consumption of resources, but which also continues to be competitive. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate how employees at Skanska's construction project "Trädgårdarna" in Boglundsängen, Örebro, work to minimize wastes (non value-adding activities). It also seeks to identify common wastes that occur, both generally on construction sites but in particular on the building project "Trädgårdarna", and finally to come up with suggestions on measures to minimize these wastes. This thesis is based on a qualitative method in the form of interviews and observations. When this thesis was written production was at an early stage. The results of this thesis demonstrate that there are both strengths and weaknesses regarding how work on "Trädgårdarna" is pro-gressing. Although the production was in an early stage, during the time of writing this thesis, the results show that the staff appreciates orderliness at their workplace and try to maintain this through different means. Overall, the staff work well to reduce wastage in the workplace. The wastes which have arisen primarily did so due to deficiencies in the design and/or production planning. To reduce the wastage rate and maintain an effective work it is of great importance to have a well-planned design, to implement work preparations as frequently as possible, to have an orderly workplace, to take advantage of the staff's knowledge and commitment and to use some form of coordinated delivery system to minimize inventory and waiting times.

Full textFor a business that follows a Lean concept, continuous improvements are always in focus (Sörqvist 2014). One of the reasons for following the concept is to reduce waste to create more value for the customer. By identifying the waste that occurs in a business, it is possible to prevent non-value-creating work. In order to streamline a non-value-adding activity in production, staff in production need to address the problem in the first place. The company then investigates the problem to find a solution together with the other responsible parties. The study is based on the tests carried out on Sweden's largest car industry, Volvo Cars Torslanda (VCT). VCT always strives for continuous improvements in production, reducing various types of waste is a priority for the company. The purpose of the study is to examine the company's non-value-creating activities in production, and what effects this has for logistics. By examining the business situation at a present stage, an understanding can be created. The aim of the study is to come up with suggestions on how Volvo Cars / industrial companies can proceed. The improvements will in turn lead to the ability to reduce the various wastes. The study is based primarily on a qualitative method in the form of interviews and observations, where a qualitative method has also been combined. Based on this method, theory and analysis, a result can be presented.

Full textThe study is a qualitative report in which interviews and observations were conducted on the project Simonsland in Borås. It is a partner project, which means that clients, contractors and subcontractors work in collaboration. The thesis focuses on logistics in the Construction industry, where the aim is to investigate non-value-creating activities impact on production and what an increased focus on building-specific workplace logistics result in. Internal workplace logistics has not been prioritized as transport solutions to and from the workplace has. Logistics is a major part of a Construction site and an important factor for creating competitiveness and profitability. Logistics in the Construction industry is complicated when working in project form and each project has different conditions and location with a short life span. In each project, different subcontractors and suppliers are employed, which may be requirements from the client but also chosen because of experience of specific tasks. What controls the projects' purchases and the selection of subcontractors and suppliers is above all economy and flexibility. Projects are often not executed according to plan and changes to documents are commonplace. Unlike the manufacturing industry, therefore, logistics is different as it has to be adapted to each project and the possibility of development in the form of cooperation is complicated. In previous studies of building logistics, the result has shown that major savings can be made if the focus is on workplace logistics. What is relevant to work with in order to make logistics more effective is Lean Construction, industrialized Construction and cooperation that will contribute to an increased comprehensive view. In order to direct the company towards its goals, different efficiency variables are prioritized. These variables create competitive advantages and are customer service, flexibility, cost, time and capital. The perception is that customer service is the variable with the highest priority. Focus is on direct costs and flexibility in the project. The result shows that logistics in the Construction industry is down-prioritized, it requires complex projects to focus on logistics. Many wastes arise due to inadequate planning. Non-value-creating activities primarily contribute to increased transport needs, high indirect costs, unnecessary movements and due to the lack of planning and communication missions, which in turn is due to lack of time. An increased focus on building-specific logistics would reduce indirect costs. It would also contribute to a more effective work that would lead to a reduction in non-value-creating activities and its consequences, as well as the time-consuming. The challenge is to start a change that all parties involved are involved in and understand the benefits of. The improvement proposals that are developed are above all that more time is required for design and planning. That a staff member focused on logistics should work at the company, who plans logistics in advance instead of the temporary solutions. To work with Lean to create an understanding of the necessities of change and how to use the resources that are being released. That tools and methods should adapt to the specific needs, such as digitization of the material chain for easier overview of what is available at the workplace. Create a broader overview through visualization and thus also improves communication.

Full textPurpose – The purpose of the study is to investigate how value stream mapping can be used to achieve a more efficient flow for a product family in the process industry. In order to achieve the purpose, three research questions have been formulated: How can a current flow be mapped in the process industry through value stream mapping? What types of non-value-added activities and waste can be identified through value stream mapping? How can a desired future flow be developed in the process industry through value stream mapping and what Lean tools can be used for improvement to achieve the desired flow? Method – To answer the research questions developed, a qualitative study with an inductive approach has been executed. Firstly, a pilot study was conducted to create a broader picture of the subject and the problem area. A literature review was then carried out with the aim of identifying previous knowledge and research within the field. Thereafter, empirical data was gathered through a case study including the methods of interviews, observations and documentary studies. Lastly, the theory and data collected for the purpose of the study have been analyzed through pattern matching and generated in the following results. Findings – The study conducted indicates that value stream mapping can be used within the process industry to achieve a more efficient flow for a product family. The research conducted shows that value stream mapping in the process industry distinguished from the discrete industry. The value stream mapping developed within the study enabled the identifying of non- value-added activities and waste in the flow of the product family. Through the identified deficiencies a desired future flow has been developed with decreased deficiencies. The desired future flow has contributed to improved suggestions of what Lean tools to be used to decrease deficiencies. The value stream mapping developed in the study shows that a product family’s lead time can be reduced which decreases the customer delivery time. Implications – Previous research shows that the method of value stream mapping is a universally phenomenon within the process industry, albeit future research is recommended to strengthen the implementation of the method. The results of the study indicate how the implementation of value stream mapping can be applied and through valuable result strengthen the theory of employing value stream mapping within the process industry. The value stream mapping analysis conducted in the study can work as an underlying foundation for other organizations when optimizing a product flow. Organizations within the process industry can apply the presented Lean tools when identifying similar non-value-added activities and waste. Limitations – The value mapping analysis has been adopted to the circumstances of the case study company. The results of the research can therefore be biased which restricts the generalizing towards companies with similar prerequisites. Another limitation with the study includes the simple case study of one unit of analysis, which could have been viewed from a broader perspective if more cases and units of analysis would have been implemented. This would have contributed to more generalized results.

Full textPurpose – The purpose with this study is to map a raw material value flow analysis and identify non-value-creating activities and propound suggestions for improvement. Method – The study is a case study based on an inductive approach with quantitative elements. The used methods is of a qualitative character since the study is based on interviews and interpretation based on observations of the basic data collection. The data collection has been done through literature studies, interviews, observations and document studies. In order to achieve high credibility, it has been important that the design of interview questions can be linked to fulfillment of the purpose. This work was done to minimize the risk of systematic errors. Findings – The study's results are based on a mapping of a flow where a current analysis was carried out to then later end in a value flow analysis. Based on the value flow analysis, it appeared that a shortage in the flow was high levels of waste. The largest identified waste was a lack of quality, mainly due to the production of defective products. This shortcoming also affects large parts of the flow. The measures proposed in the study are to implement standards through a change in the culture of the company, and to continue to work on continuous improvements. Implications – The result, which shows the importance of working with streamlining waste, which in this case leads to a lack of quality, mainly in the form of production of defective products. The study can be seen as a practical contribution to manufacturing companies, by embracing these proposals for action, it should generate a better consensus on the quality of the business. Also a theoretical contribution where further research could look at how to technically and psychologically implement a change like this. Limitations – It can be difficult to generalize the results as this is a study conducted as a one-case design. Furthermore, it is also complex to investigate and develop a study that shows how quality is linked to corporate culture.

Full textTitle: Development and improvement of the purchasing process for transports. A case study at Wexiödisk Ab in Växjö. Background: An increasing number of companies choose not to perform transportation on their own and instead collaborate with third-party logistics companies. The purchasing process for transports is the process that ensures that the transport services for thecustomers are purchased. Wexiödisk experiences some problems regarding the purchasing process for transports in the form of lack of knowledge about the process’s activities, problems with standardization and feels that it is done in an old-fashioned way. This leads to waste, problems with delegation and inefficiency. An increased degree of outsourcing often leads to increased cost savings, but it is difficult to capture how costs change from managing the process internally to being managed by a third party. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to identify non-value creating activities that currently occurs in the purchasing process for transports by mapping the process, with the intention of developing and proposing improvement work. The purpose is also to identify and investigate how costs change and what factors may affect them in a potential outsourcing of the purchasing process for transports in SME, and to develop a cost model for identifying these costs. Method: This study is a one-case study using qualitative methods. Relevant data for the study were collected using un- and semi-structured interviews and as well as on-site observations. First, the process maps were created for the process for each market with theaim to create knowledge about the process’s activities and identifying non-value-creating activities. Subsequently, improvement proposals were identified to reduce waste. At the end, possible outsourcing of the process is analyzed and cost changes that can occur. Conclusions: The purchasing process for transport at Wexiödisk is characterized by anumber of manual work steps and short comings in the information flow that leads to waste, especially in the form of overworking. There are more non-value-creating activities regarding the process for the foreign market than the Swedish one. Improvement proposals that have been identified and can reduce waste are in form of digitalization and development of existing business systems and increased integration. Even increased standardization. Even increased standardization of the process can have positive effects on the process and a tool to achieve it is 5S. Several costs were identified by managing the process internally, especially indirect costs. The highest cost is personnel costs for the transport manager. Costs that may be incurred in outsourcing of the process were categorized into five categories, namely contract-related costs, transaction costs, entertainment and service costs, risk costs and hidden costs. These costs depend on various factors and the size may be greater or lower depending on different conditions.

This report is the result of an analysis made at Vest-Woods factory in Forserum during the spring of 2007 with the purpose to reduce internal transports. Vest-Wood AB in Forserum produces doors for the Swedish market but is also a supplier of doorframes to another factory (Sdr Felding in Denmark) in the same group of companies. The material handling for supplying the factory in Sdr Felding with
doorframes causes a lot of internal transports. The factory in Forserum has chosen to keep the twelve most ordered doorframes in stock to keep up with varying demand from the factory in Sdr Felding and to smooth their own manufacturing. The warehouse in Forserum, where the doorframes are stored, is placed 200 m from the
manufacturing site and that contributes to the internal transport. The assignment that Vest-Wood AB in Forserum wanted analysed was how they could find a more beneficial arrangement of the internal transports from an economic point of view. To define the present situation we calculated the mean value based on inventory data
from 2006. The factory in Forserum is closed for one more week than the factory in Sdr Felding is during the summer. For that reason, a buffer is built to cover the demand from the factory in Sdr Felding during this week. This buffer is also kept in the warehouse. That buffer was subtracted from the inventory results. When the mean
value of the warehouse had been calculated, the yearly cost of storing the doorframes could be calculated. There are three different flows in that part of the factory in Forserum where our analysis has taken place. Production of the twelve doorframes
takes place in two of them. We calculated total capacity in these two flows and found that they have potential extra capacity of 25 %.
With the mean value of the warehouse and the potential extra capacity in the production we could work out a proposal of improvement. The proposal treats how to remove the warehouse as a way of reducing internal transports. The proposal assumes
that the collaboration and insight between the factory in Sdr Felding and the factory in Forserum is improved.

Full textEmballagefabriken manufactures packaging solutions made of wood and plywood. Low profitability prevails on the manual assembly department of the company, due to a long throughput time in the manufacture of the Plywood box. The production is performed in four steps and begins at the saw department followed by the printing department, then the cnc department and finally the assembly. The purpose of this work was to reduce the non-value-added activities that occurred in the production flow. To get an overview of the current situation, a material flow analysis was performed followed by a preliminary study that identified which activities were performed in each department. With this in mind, quantitative time studies of activities were conducted in parallel with qualitative observa-tions. Finally, all activities were classified in cooperation with production staff and production manager. The time studies resulted in a mapping of non-value-added activities, which were then analyzed. Finally, improvement proposals were put forward that the company could implement. The conclusion of the work showed that there was potential to reduce, and in some cases eliminate, non-value-adding activities.

Full textOnline brand community (OBC) is intended to be a powerful, and potentially valuable, tool for businesses. However, the outcome has shown that companies have had difficulties responding to their OBC:s. It has resulted in companies missing the potential values that OBC offered. In order to increase knowledge about value creation and reception of the OBC:s a netnography of Minecraft and Netflix, respectively OBC has been conducted. The study examined how interactions and activities contributed to the creation of value by an increased brand equity and new innovation. It also highlighted how the OBC:s differed depending on whether the OBC:s were focused on the topics of innovation versus brand equity. The study found seven interaction patterns to analyse. The interaction patterns showed differences between the OBC:s ,based on their focus and conditions. The study could also describe how six of the seven interactions created value for the company.

Full textIn recent decades supply relationship management have become a competitive factor for companies worldwide. This master thesis will partly address the theory of supply relationship management and integrate it with value co-creation, which is an additional important aspect for companies wanting to implement a win-win thinking with their collaborative partners. The study have been conducted at the purchasing department at Valmet in Karlstad with the purpose of identifying value creation in a supplier relationship. The empirical data have been analyzed to represent activities that can be applied in an early stage of a product/project cycle. This leads to Design to Cost, which constitutes the third and last foundation for the literature study of this work. This study started with a literature review, focusing on the three main subjects; supply relationship management, value co-creation and Design to Cost. This review was then concluded by a theoretical framework and followed up with a qualitative data collection. Semi-structured interviews were used in two different parts of the study, first with employees at Valmet in Karlstad and then with their suppliers. During the analysis the data was compared to the established theoretical framework. The results show that value co-creating in the study's context is based foremost on communication and trust. It is also important to know at what phase the involvement should be accomplished. As this is a study focusing on Design to Cost it is recommended to involve the suppliers at an early stage. As a result more opportunities are given and the cooperation is less restrained by any technical design decisions etc. The identified activities from the analysis have been prioritized and a recommendation have been created partly to Valmet, but also to similar industries. As the result is based on empirical data analyzed from a theoretical perspective, it can therefore be justified that the solutions are general to a certain extent and thus applicable in other contexts. The activities have been divided into 4 themes; communication, collaboration, information sharing and categorization. For instance, the proposals for activities concern education, follow-ups and feedback, internal benchmarking, development plans, cross-functional teams, quality assurance, forecasts, cost breakdown as well as categorization of supplier/customer and products.

Full textLeadership is assigned a great importance in quality development, but little focus is given to the importance of the employees. The purpose of this study was therefore to increase the understanding of the meaning of employeeship in quality development and was based on a total quality management model “hörnstensmodellen”. Following questions were answered to fulfill the purpose; how employees create value, employee responsibility to create value and how employees can pose a risk in total quality management. The purpose was answered through a qualitative study including 12 semi-structured interviews where the sample is represented by managers and employees with academic backgrounds from the private and public sectors. Results from the interviews were compiled on the basis of the questions that were addressed and three themes were identified as of importance for the employeeship in total quality management; competence, feedback and attitude. Furthermore, the results showed that employees had as much responsibility as the leaders. The conclusion of the study shows that the employeeship is of great importance in quality development as it can be value-creating or value-contaminating.

Full textABB Robotics is one of the largest manufacturer of industrial robots on the global market. One of their factories is located in Västerås where this work was executed at the final assembly line for large industry robots (SSIR). The final assembly line have recently been converted to a takted one-piece flow. Now ABB Robotics want to identify waste in the new assembly line and investigate the possibility to use multiple takt times to increase their capacity. The project was divided into two parts where the first part was assigned to identify waste and the second part to analyze the use of takt time. A current state mapping was performed to increase the understanding for the flow and the issue. Value stream mapping (VSM) was executed in an existing template with the use of data from the current state mapping and cycle times from recent time studies. Waste was identified according to lean with the help of VSM, spaghetti diagram and the disruption log. Today waste arise from the worker having to move to collect tools and material. Cycle times used for the VSM were later on used for calculations regarding capacity and takt time. Different takt times and mix of models were compared to give recommendations regarding the use of multiple takt times. Solutions on how to decrease and measure waste was presented. Two of the solutions were to change layout of station 1 and to implement a new materials feed system. With todays cycle times ABB Robotics are recommended to only use one takt time. The same goes for the case when the cycle times are shortened evenly. If the gap between the average cycle time for heavy models respectively light models would increase, then it would become interesting to further investigate the use of multiple takt times. The gap would increase if the light models are rebalanced to include operations by station 2 and in this case the capacity would increase with 4,5 % with the use of multiple takt times instead of one takt time.

Full textHigh construction costs and considerable housing shortages in Sweden show that a more efficient housing construction is required. A reduction of waste in the construction process contributes to the efficiency of both time and cost. In order to increase the understanding of the importance of efficiency, this study reveals waste in the production flow of a cast in-situ concrete wall in a housing project. The study also shows where in the production flow there are improvement opportunities. The waste was made visible through a time study which showed great potential for improvement in the housing project resource flow, material flow and information flow. There are many indications that these shortcomings in the production flow are due to a too short construction time, which means that a good planning is not always carried out.
