Abstract:
Hillbilly Elegy has had a profound impact on contemporary views and opinions of Appalachia. In this review, the authors discuss this impact and provide key critiques that help readers make sense of the generalizations made in the book by placing Hillbilly Elegy in conversation with other contemporary Appalachian scholarship. The authors conclude that J. D. Vance has a right to tell his story but telling the story of the Appalachian people is more complex and nuanced than Vance acknowledges, and the authors caution readers to consider this when reading Hillbilly Elegy.

Abstract:
In 2016, J. D. Vance, a previously unknown author, surprisingly hit the bestseller’s list with his memoir, Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis. However, historically scholars have pushed back against the stereotypes that Vance portrays and have argued for a narrative that embraces the diversity of the Appalachian region. Using content analysis, this research study investigated the frequency and context of key terms related to Appalachia across the K-12 social studies standards of states labeled as being part of the region by the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC). Results illustrate the lack of inclusion of these terms and that, when included, they do not represent the rich history or culture of the region. These results suggest that researchers, teacher educators, and teachers should consider the ways in which standards define curriculum on topics such as Appalachia and how these definitions interact with the powerful narratives being portrayed within our mainstream democracy. Guidance and suggestions for disrupting Appalachian stereotypes within social studies education are provided.

Abstract:
This chapter demonstrates the ways in which harsh economic forces have undermined the stability of American families. The fragile families that the 1965 Moynihan Report identified as a phenomenon limited to poor, urban African American families in the next two decades spread to the underclass of all races as economic inequality and insecurity expanded in the United States. Since then, as economic restructuring has increasingly decimated the job opportunities of the working class, their families too have become destabilized. The end result is that marriage rates have plummeted among poor and working-class families, while rates of divorce and nonmarital births have skyrocketed. American families are now the most unstable in the world, at considerable cost to the well-being of adults and, particularly, children. While some commentators, including J. D. Vance, have argued that the problems of the poor and working class derive from cultural rather than economic sources, clear analysis shows the roots of these problems are firmly planted in the economic domain.

Full text
Abstract:
Moderate self-esteem is considered desirable from perspectives such as leading to effective decision-making (Baumeister et al. 2003; Kirkpatrick and Ellis 2003). One factor that can lead to low self-esteem is the perceived large difference between the ideal self and the actual self-views (Bills, Vance, and McLEAN 1951; Hannover, Birkner, and Pöhlmann 2006). Therefore, we hypothesized that through an experience as if one had become an “Invisible Human”, self-esteem reduction could be prevented by diminishing one's existence and removing their awareness of comparing one's ideal self with one's actual self-views. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the impact of the Invisible Human experience of the invisible human on self-esteem.In the experiment, participants experienced the Invisible Human experience through Augmented Reality (AR). (1) the feeling of being an invisible human, (2) the sense of one's physical self-presence, (3) the self-evaluation consciousness, (4) the difference between the ideal self and the real self, and (5) state self-esteem scale were evaluated through questionnaires before and after the AR experience. In the experience, images acquired using a camera attached to a head-mounted display (HMD) were processed in real-time to create an image in which only the body of the participants seems to have disappeared from the real view, which was then presented on the HMD. Valid data obtained were N=24 (15 females and 9 males, age 21.3²2.3 years). The results showed that Significant differences were found in (1), (2), and (3) before and after the experience, which indicates that the Invisible Man experience made participants feel more as if they were invisible, their sense of self-presence decreased, and their self-evaluation consciousness weakened. There was also a tendency for (4) the difference between the ideal self and actual self-views to become smaller. However, there was no significant difference in the (5) state self-esteem scale. The impact of the Invisible Human experience might change depending on the participants' usual level of self-esteem. If low self-esteem can be high and high self-esteem can be low, then the Invisible Human experience may work effectively to maintain their self-esteem to be moderate. In future studies, more evaluations with a larger number of participants are needed.Baumeister, Roy F., Jennifer D. Campbell, Joachim I. Krueger, and Kathleen D. Chang, Haiping, Jingyu Zhang, and Taiping Huang. "Experimental Investigation on Impingement Heat Transfer From Rib Roughened Surface Within Arrays of Circular Jets: Correlation." In ASME Turbo Expo 2000: Power for Land, Sea, and Air. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2000. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/2000-gt-0220.

Full text
Abstract:
Impingement heat transfer is one of the useful cooling methods for high temperature gas turbine blades and/or guide vanes in aeroengines. After the cooling jet impinges on the leading edge of the turbine blade and/or guide vane, it flows downstream and turns to be the initial crossflow for the aft row of impinging jet. The process of impingement heat transfer is quite complicated, especially when the target surface is rib roughened. In this paper, the correlation of the impingement heat transfer characteristics has been analyzed based on thousands of experimental data in different parameter matching conditions (Ref = 7000∼20000, Gc/Gj = 0∼0.5, Xn = 5∼15, Zn = 1.5∼5, p/e = 5∼12 and e/d = 0.5∼1.5). The impingement heat transfer characteristics can be generally expressed as a functional formulation with the exponential functions of Ref, Zn, Xn, e/d and p/e, and a polynomial function of Gc/Gj. The interaction among the parameters are reflected in the exponents i, j, k, n, etc. and the weighing coefficients. By the regression processing to the experimental data, the exponents and the weighing coefficients are determined. The correlation equation of impingement heat transfer characteristics to the parameters has been finally concluded. Comparison shows that the correlation results are in good agreement with the experimental data.
