Abstract. Assemblages of Middle Devonian (Givetian) phytoplankton from the Holy Cross Mountains include sphaeromorphs possessing blister-like ornamentation typical of the genus Tapajonites Sommer & van Boekel, 1963. Study of the sculptural elements under high magnification indicates the presence of patterns resembling impressions of pyrite crystals. It is suggested that ornamentation in Tapajonites, or at least in some sphaeromorphs assignable to that genus, is of a secondary nature.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether previously reported questionnaire-based differences in self-regulatory behaviors (Eggers, De Nil, & Van den Bergh, 2009, 2010) between children who stutter (CWS) and children who do not stutter (CWNS) would also be reflected in their underlying attentional networks. Method Participants consisted of 41 CWS (mean age = 6;09; years;months) and 41 CWNS (mean age = 6;09) ranging in age from 4;00 to 9;00. Participants were matched on age and gender. The efficiency of the attentional networks was assessed by using the computerized Attention Network Test (Fan, McCandliss, Sommer, Raz, & Posner, 2002). Results Primary results indicated that CWS had a significantly lower efficiency of the orienting network compared with CWNS, whereas no differences were found on the alerting or executive control network. Conclusion Current findings corroborate previously found differences in self-regulatory behavior and were taken to suggest a possible role for attentional processes in developmental stuttering.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The role of women in some prose works of C.M. van den Heever Re-reading the C.M. van den Heever “classics” Somer (1935) and Laat vrugte (1939) within the framework of Van den Heever criticism through the years, one becomes aware that central themes in his oeuvre are acted out by women. The beautiful young girl Linda in Somer embodies the sadness of the transcience of beauty and happiness. Through Ouma Willa, Betta and Johanna – three women from three generations in Laat vrugte – the theme of the endurance of the memory of love and passion beyond decay and death is expressed. A cursory examination of other and earlier works by Van den Heever – Op die plaas (1927), Langs die grootpad (1928), Kromburg (1937) and the short story “Leuens” (Lies) from Vuurvlieg en sterre (1934) – bears out the observation that women express core meanings in C.M. van den Heever’s prose works.

Abstract:
Abstract This article interrogates three manuscript inventories for Anna of Denmark’s collection at the Tudor palace of Oatlands in Surrey, written at yearly intervals in 1616, 1617 and 1618. It explores the changing display of her paintings there in lavishly furnished settings and the positioning of a new portrait, Paul van Somer’s Anne of Denmark. Van Somer locates his subject in the hunting park at Oatlands with a representation, in the background, of an Inigo Jones gateway. This article explores Anna’s agency as a collector and patron. It proposes new readings for the interplay between portraiture, architecture, and the decorative and performing arts at the early Stuart court. Through a study of particular occasions at which they were seen by foreign ambassadors, it proposes a political currency for the queen’s collection and for van Somer’s portraits and Jones’s architecture, as integral components in the elaborate ‘performances’ of the court.

The long term effect of black hail netting (20% shading) on budding percentage, but fertility, cane mass, yield, bunch mass, berry mass and berry cracking as well as sugar concentration (total soluble solids), acid concentration (titratable acidity) and pH of the berry juice of table grapes (cultivars Pirobella, Bien Donne, Ronelle and Italia) was evaluated. Budding percentage and bud fertility were significantly reduced by hail netting. Reproductive growth in terms of yield and bunch mass seemed to be higher under hail netting compared to direct sunlight, while berry mass was not affected. Berry cracking tended to decrease under hail netting. Berry sugar concentration and pH decreased significantly under hail netting, while the acid concentration increased.

Abstract:
Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cells have demonstrated unprecedented efficacy in heavily pretreated relapsed and/or refractory multiple myeloma (MM) patients but may require further engineering to achieve their greatest potential. Enhancing cell expansion and persistence by providing cytokine support has been shown to improve the long-term antitumor activity of adoptively transferred CAR T cells in preclinical models. Combining CAR T cells with systemically-administered cytokines or cytokine mimetics can however result in toxicities and adverse events. Alternatively, cytokine signaling can be provided in a constitutive, CAR T cell-intrinsic fashion, by exogenous expression of a Constitutively Active Chimeric Cytokine Receptor (CACCR). CACCRs can be engineered by combining a membrane-tethered dimerization and JAK-binding domain derived from the thrombopoietin receptor (TpoR) fused to an intracellular signaling domain derived from a cytokine receptor. We investigated the impact of CACCR expression on the phenotype, functionality, persistence, and safety profile of allogeneic CAR T cells targeting BCMA to produce a second generation allogeneic BCMA "TurboCAR T™" candidate (ALLO-605). BCMA CAR T cells were generated from healthy donor T cells by lentiviral transduction with a CAR construct followed by genetic inactivation of the TRAC and CD52 loci using TALEN® gene editing. Allogeneic BCMA TurboCAR™ T cells, engineered for stoichiometric expression of the CAR and a CACCR via a self-cleaving peptide, were produced similarly. Constitutive expression of the CACCR during manufacturing had no negative effects on CAR T cell phenotype or yield and resulted in a product with over 60% stem cell memory/central memory T cells. In vitro, BCMA TurboCAR T™ cells showed enhanced cytokine secretion, polyfunctionality and improved serial killing activity. In a disseminated mouse model of multiple myeloma, BCMA TurboCAR T™ cells exhibited at least a 2-fold increase in peak expansion and enhanced survival and persistence compared to BCMA CAR T cells, resulting in prolonged antitumor responses and delaying relapses. Despite this enhanced persistence, we found that exposure to target cells was absolutely required for the expansion and long-term activity of BCMA TurboCAR T™ cells and no evidence of target- and cytokine-independent proliferation was observed. Since adoptive cell therapies have the potential to elicit toxicities in some patients, two alternative approaches to modulate BCMA TurboCAR T™ cell activity were investigated. First, we tested the ability of a CD20-based off-switch incorporated within the CAR to sensitize cells to rituximab and found effective depletion of BCMA TurboCAR T™ cells by complement or effector cells in vitro and in vivo in the presence of the antibody. In addition, we confirmed rapid inhibition of BCMA TurboCAR T™ cells by the protein tyrosine kinase inhibitor dasatinib, which has been shown to interfere with LCK activity. The prolonged persistence and antitumor responses seen in preclinical models along with a favorable safety profile of BCMA TurboCAR™ T cells support clinical investigation of ALLO-605 in relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma. Abstract:
In this paper a numerical solution for the problem on suspended sediment concentration distribution in an alluvial channel flow has been computed on the base of PROFILE model proposed by L. C. Van Rijn for the case of uniform flow. Although, in the present case, mathematical model is quite simple, but it is exact enough to apply to Somme problems in practice. The aim of the paper is that the author would like to use the finite difference method for the same problem. The input data was used from experiment flume. The result showed that the concentration distribution fast decreased along the channel and concentration gradients became very small at the sections situated far enough from the upstream. Besides, a computing program me with the ability of graphic expression was established.

Abstract:
The autobiographical relationship between the concrete author and a character or narrator in a text has always been a problem in the study of literature. In this article it is illustrated how certain signals in the text may function as autobiographical indicators. These signals must direct the reader towards an autobiographical interpretation of a specific text, because this is often essential for an adequate reading of such a text. The methodological approach of this article is, though, that an autobiographical interpretation of a text should at all times be textually confirmed. Texts included in this study are Somer 11 and Suidpunt-jazz (André Letoit), Jonkmanskas and Die hemel help ons (Koos Prinsloo), Van stiltes en stemme (J.M. Abstract:
The study of indirect translations (IT) into Ukrainian, viewed from a psycholinguistic perspective, will contribute to a better understanding of Soviet national policies and the post-Soviet linguistic and cultural condition. The paper pioneers a discussion of the strategies and types of IT via Russian in the domains of literature and religion. In many cases the corresponding Russian translation, which serves as a source text for the Ukrainian one, cannot be established with confidence, and the “sticking-out ears” of Russian mediation may only be monitored at the level of sentence structure, when Russian wording underlies the Ukrainian text and distorts its natural fluency. The discussion substantiates the strategies and singles out the types of IT, in particular, (1) Soviet lower-quality retranslations of the recent, and mostly high-quality, translations of literary classics, which deliberately imitated lexical, grammatical, and stylistic patterns of the Russian language (became massive in scope in the mid1930s); (2) the translation-from-crib type, or translations via the Russian interlinear version, which have been especially common in poetry after WWII, from the languages of the USSR nationalities and the socialist camp countries; (3) overt relayed translations, based on the published and intended for the audience Russian translations that can be clearly defined as the source texts for the IT into Ukrainian; this phenomenon may be best illustrated with Patriarch Filaret Version of the Holy Scripture, translated from the Russian Synodal Bible (the translation started in the early 1970s); and, finally, (4) later Soviet (from the mid1950s) and post-Soviet (during Independence period) hidden relayed translations of literary works, which have been declared as direct ones but in fact appeared in print shortly after the publication of the respective works in Russian translation and mirrored Russian lexical and stylistic patterns. Abstract:
Let \(G\) be a simple graph with vertex set \(V=\{v_1,v_2,\ldots,v_n \}\), and let \(d_i\) be the degree of the vertex \(v_i\). The Sombor matrix of \(G\) is the square matrix \(\mathbf A_{SO}\) of order \(n\), whose \((i,j)\)-element is \(\sqrt{d_i^2+d_j^2}\) if \(v_i\) and \(v_j\) are adjacent, and zero otherwise. We study the characteristic polynomial, spectrum, and energy of \(\mathbf A_{SO}\). A few results for the coefficients of the characteristic polynomial, and bounds for the energy of \(\mathbf A_{SO}\) are established.

Abstract:
Abstract Autologous chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cells targeting B-Cell Maturation Antigen (BCMA) have demonstrated promising clinical activity, inducing durable responses in patients with relapsed/refractory multiple myeloma (MM). Development of autologous CAR T therapies is however limited by logistical challenges and the time required for manufacturing, which has to be done for each patient. In addition, manufacturing may not be feasible in some patients. An allogeneic approach that utilizes engineered cells from a healthy donor could potentially expand patient access to these therapies by providing a readily available off-the-shelf product. We have previously described the screening of a library of single chain variable fragments (scFvs) with high affinity to human BCMA and the identification of candidate BCMA CARs with potent antitumor activity. Here we sought to further characterize ALLO-715, our lead allogeneic BCMA CAR T cell product, for its specificity to human BCMA, antitumor efficacy in vitro using a long-term killing assay and in xenograft mouse models with physiologic levels of human IL-7 and IL-15, and suitability for scale-up manufacturing. Allogeneic ALLO-715 CAR T cells were generated by lentiviral transduction with a second generation CAR construct incorporating a novel scFv derived from a fully-human antibody with high affinity to BCMA (KD value ~ 5 nM, determined at 37°C) and featuring a rituximab-driven off-switch. Transduced T cells were then transfected with mRNAs encoding Transcription Activator-Like Effector Nucleases (TALEN®) designed to specifically disrupt the T cell receptor alpha chain and CD52 loci. These modifications result in a cell product with a lower risk of TCR-mediated graft-versus-host disease and resistance to the CD52 antibody alemtuzumab, a lymphodepleting agent. BCMA CAR T cells exhibited robust cell expansion, with low levels of tonic signaling that resulted in minimal differentiation (> 50% Tscm/Tcm phenotype). In in vitro assays, ALLO-715 CAR T cells displayed potent cytotoxic activity when co-cultured with the target cell lines MM.1S, Molp-8, and BCMA-REH but negligible cytotoxicity against BCMA-negative REH cells. The high proliferative potential indicated by the high frequency of memory T cells was validated in long-term killing assays, where ALLO-715 CAR T cells showed substantial expansion in the presence of MM.1S cells with no evidence of exhaustion or diminished cytolytic activity after seven days of continuous exposure to target. The potency of ALLO-715 CAR T cells was unaffected by high concentrations of soluble BCMA (>10 ug/mL), which has been shown previously to interfere with the activity of some BCMA-specific CARs. In MM xenograft mouse models, ALLO-715 CAR T cells were highly efficacious at single dose. High serum IL-15 levels have been associated with CAR T cell expansion in clinical trials. To evaluate the impact of homeostatic cytokines on CAR T cell survival and antitumor activity in our xenograft models, mice were administered adeno-associated viruses (AAV) for the expression of human IL-7 and IL-15. In the presence of physiological concentrations of these cytokines, enhanced BCMA CAR T cell expansion and anti-tumor activity were observed. To assess potential off-target interactions of ALLO-715 CAR, tissue cross-reactivity studies were carried out on standard human tissue panels using a scFv-human IgG fusion protein. Consistent with the limited expression pattern of BCMA, reactivity was seen on scattered cells in lymphoid tissues such as tonsil and abundantly on BCMA-expressing cell lines, but no appreciable staining was detected in other tissues. We examined BCMA CAR T cells manufactured following a proprietary GMP-like clinical scale process and found that cell expansion and viability, T cell phenotype and in vivo antitumor efficacy were preserved. These results demonstrate the potential of ALLO-715 as a novel allogeneic BCMA CAR T therapy for the treatment of relapsed/refractory MM and other BCMA-positive malignancies. Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Autologous chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cells have achieved unprecedented clinical responses in patients with B-cell leukemias, lymphomas and multiple myeloma, raising interest in using CAR T cell therapies in AML. These therapies are produced using a patient's own T cells, an approach that has inherent challenges, including requiring significant time for production, complex supply chain logistics, separate GMP manufacturing for each patient, and variability in performance of patient-derived cells. Given the rapid pace of disease progression combined with limitations associated with the autologous approach and treatment-induced lymphopenia, many patients with AML may not receive treatment. Allogeneic CAR T (AlloCAR T) cell therapies, which utilize cells from healthy donors, may provide greater convenience with readily available off-the-shelf CAR T cells on-demand, reliable product consistency, and accessibility at greater scale for more patients. To create an allogeneic product, the TRAC and CD52 genes are inactivated in CAR T cells using Transcription Activator-Like Effector Nuclease (TALEN®) technology. These genetic modifications are intended to minimize the risk of graft-versus-host disease and to confer resistance to ALLO-647, an anti-CD52 antibody that can be used as part of the conditioning regimen to deplete host alloreactive immune cells potentially leading to increased persistence and efficacy of the infused allogeneic cells. We have previously described the functional screening of a library of anti-FLT3 single-chain variable fragments (scFvs) and the identification of a lead FLT3 CAR with optimal activity against AML cells and featuring an off-switch activated by rituximab. Here we characterize ALLO-819, an allogeneic FLT3 CAR T cell product, for its antitumor efficacy and expansion in orthotopic models of human AML, cytotoxicity in the presence of soluble FLT3 (sFLT3), performance compared with previously described anti-FLT3 CARs and potential for off-target binding of the scFv to normal human tissues. To produce ALLO-819, T cells derived from healthy donors were activated and transduced with a lentiviral construct for expression of the lead anti-FLT3 CAR followed by efficient knockout of TRAC and CD52. ALLO-819 manufactured from multiple donors was insensitive to ALLO-647 (100 µg/mL) in in vitro assays, suggesting that it would avoid elimination by the lymphodepletion regimen. In orthotopic models of AML (MV4-11 and EOL-1), ALLO-819 exhibited dose-dependent expansion and cytotoxic activity, with peak CAR T cell levels corresponding to maximal antitumor efficacy. Intriguingly, ALLO-819 showed earlier and more robust peak expansion in mice engrafted with MV4-11 target cells, which express lower levels of the antigen relative to EOL-1 cells (n=2 donors). To further assess the potency of ALLO-819, multiple anti-FLT3 scFvs that had been described in previous reports were cloned into lentiviral constructs that were used to generate CAR T cells following the standard protocol. In these comparative studies, the ALLO-819 CAR displayed high transduction efficiency and superior performance across different donors. Furthermore, the effector function of ALLO-819 was equivalent to that observed in FLT3 CAR T cells with normal expression of TCR and CD52, indicating no effects of TALEN® treatment on CAR T cell activity. Plasma levels of sFLT3 are frequently increased in patients with AML and correlate with tumor burden, raising the possibility that sFLT3 may act as a decoy for FLT3 CAR T cells. To rule out an inhibitory effect of sFLT3 on ALLO-819, effector and target cells were cultured overnight in the presence of increasing concentrations of recombinant sFLT3. We found that ALLO-819 retained its killing properties even in the presence of supraphysiological concentrations of sFLT3 (1 µg/mL). To investigate the potential for off-target binding of the ALLO-819 CAR to human tissues, tissue cross-reactivity studies were conducted using a recombinant protein consisting of the extracellular domain of the CAR fused to human IgG Fc. Consistent with the limited expression pattern of FLT3 and indicative of the high specificity of the lead scFv, no appreciable membrane staining was detected in any of the 36 normal tissues tested (n=3 donors). Taken together, our results support clinical development of ALLO-819 as a novel and effective CAR T cell therapy for the treatment of AML.

Abstract:
We investigated the nature of graphic formulas in 5-, 7-, and 9-year-old children when they were asked to draw a house and a television in a free condition, and then to draw from photographs of these objects. Assuming that the frequency of occurrence of a feature in children's drawings reflects its semantic weight, we studied the relations between occurrence and order of production of features to assess the extent to which a core-to-periphery progression principle (van Sommers, 1984) applies to the graphic formulas. The results showed that this principle was essentially present in the free drawing context. Under copying conditions, the order of production of the features was under the influence of perceptual and geometric factors, which elicited the production of subsystems of features at the depends of the application of the core-to-periphery progression principle. In the free condition, the core-to-periphery principle was mostly relevant in accounting for graphic formulas of the house in the young children (5 and 7 years), and of the television at ages 7 and 9. We suggest that the development of a graphic formula is partially related to the development of the object as a category in the child's conceptual system.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
The article investigates the textual potential of concrete and multidirectional verbs of motion (based on the original and translated texts of P. Süskind “Die Geschichte von Herrn Sommer”). Textual specificity of verbs of motion is considered with the support of semantic-pragmatic features of the verb subsystems of two languages. For Russian verbs of motion, the concept of direction is relevant, since any movement is carried out in space by a certain trajectory (idti – hodit’, bresti – brodit’, letet’ – letat’, bezhat’ – begat’). In German, this parameter of motion is actualized only in the appropriate context with the help of adverbs of location and direction; prepositional-case constructions; direct complements and separable prefixes. In the semantic field “Movement / Verkehr” with the verb dominant there are lexical groupings, whose members, due to the lexico-grammatical and lexico-semantic valency of verbs, interpret different characteristics of the process of movement. The text's richness in units of different parts of speech with the meaning of motion (primarily verbs) organizes the narrative chronotope of the story: the semantics of space and time is actualized with the help of the lexicon of motion. Each of the main characters is included into the narrative through the description of the peculiarities of their movement. The following movement parameters are essential for the lexico-grammatical organization of the original and translated texts: direction, mode and means of movement, speed, purpose and actions associated with movement. In this textual paradigm, the key role belongs to concrete and multidirectional verbs. The main character lives his life in a constant, energetic, well-directed and aimless movement, unlike other characters, whose movements are determined by fatigue / vigor, vector (up / down, forward/backward), unidirectional and multidirectional, purpose and means of movement. In the semantics of concrete verbs there is a derivative potential seme “purpose of movement,” which, however, is extinguished in the original and translated texts. The main semantic paradox of the text is created by the intra-textual opposition of “a certain direction” and “no purpose” of the movements of the main character.

Abstract:
Over the past 40 years, extensive research has examined the effectiveness of mnemonics for vocabulary learning. Much of this research has investigated the keyword method (Atkinson & Raugh, 1975), which involves linking an image related to a to-be-learned L2 word with an image related to a similar-sounding L1 word. Whereas most research has shown the keyword method to be effective (Webb & Nation, 2017) with impressive long-term retention rates (Beaton, Gruneberg, & Ellis, 1995), some have questioned its usefulness, particularly due to the quality of the resulting lexical representations and extended latencies associated with recall (Barcroft, Sommers, & Sunderman, 2011; Van Hell & Candia Mahn, 1997). Other drawbacks of the keyword technique are the equating of dissimilar L1 and L2 phonemes and the difficulty in creating associations for languages with markedly different phoneme inventories. The current study presents a novel approach called the Homonym/Homophone Association Method (HAM). It overcomes some of the drawbacks of the keyword method by associating meanings of L2 homonyms or homophones, one known by the learner and one unknown. Because the pronunciations of the L2 target words are identical (or nearly identical), learners only need to associate two distinct meanings. A quasi-experiment (N = 71) employing a within-subjects design compared the effectiveness of (1) HAM using researcher-generated associations and images, (2) HAM using self-generated associations, and (3) production practice that involved writing target words in sentences. Results on an unannounced posttest given 3 weeks after instruction suggest an advantage for HAM using researcher-generated associations.

Abstract:

Abstract:
AbstractPhilips Wouwerman(s) was undoubtedly the most accomplished and successful Dutch painter of equestrian scenes in the 17th century. Even so, neither a critical study of his work nor a documented biography has been published. The present essay not only presents the results of archive research but also outlines his artistic development. Besides the seven dated pictures by the artist known by Hofstede de Groot, several others have been discovered. Wouwerman was born in Haarlem, the eldest son of the painter Pouwels Joosten and his fourth wife, Susanna van den Bogert. Two other sons, Pieter and Johannes Wouwerman, were also to become painters. Wouwerman's grandfather originally came from Brussels. Philips probably received his first painting lessons from his father, none of whose work has been identified however, making it impossible to determine the extent of his influence on the son's work. According to Cornelis de Bie, Wouwerman was next apprenticed to Frans Hals. He is subsequently reputed to have spent several weeks in 1638 or 1639 working in Hamburg in the studio of the German history painter Evert Decker. In Hamburg he married Annetje Pietersz van Broeckhof. On 4 September 1640 Wouwerman became a member of the Haarlem painters' guild, in which he held the office of vinder in 1646. In the following years his presence in Haarlem is mentioned repeatedly. In view of the many southern elements in his landscapes it has frequently been suggested that Wouwerman travelled to France or Italy. However, there is no documentary evidence of his having left Haarlem for any length of time. Wouwerman died on 19 May 1668 and was buried on 23 May 1668 in the Nieuwe Kerk in Haarlem. He evidently attained a certain degree of prosperity, going by the relatively large sums of money each of his seven children inherited on his widow's death in 1670 and by the various houses he owned. No confirmation can be found of Arnold Houbraken's often quoted remark that Wouwerman's daughter Ludovica brought a dowry of 20,000 guilders with her in 1672 when she married the painter Hendrik de Fromantiou (1633/34 - after 1694). Wouwerman's oeuvre consists mainly of small cabinet pieces with horses, such as battle and hunting scenes, army camps, smithies and interiors of stables. He also painted sensitively executed silvery-grey landscapes, genre pieces and a few original representations of religious and mythological scenes. Wouwerman was also exceptionally prolific. Although he only lived to the age of 48, more than a thousand paintings bear his name. Even when one bears in mind that a number of these paintings should actually be attributed to his brothers Pieter and Jan, Philips left an extraordinarily large oeuvre. Only a small number of drawings by his hand are known. His pupils include Nicolaes Ficke, Jacob Warnars, Emanuel Murant and his brothers Pieter (1623-1682) and Jan Wouwerman (1629-1666). He had many followers and his paintings were much sought after in the i8th and early 19th centuries, especially in France. Important collections created during that period, including those which form the nuclei of the museums in St Petersburg, Dresden and The Hague, all contain a large number of his works. Establishing a chronology with respect to Philips Wouwerman's work is extremely problematic. His extensive oeuvre notwithstanding, only a comparatively small number of paintings are dated. The style of the signature enables us to date pictures only within wide margins: the monogram composed of P, H, and W was only used before 1646; thenceforth he used a monogram composed of PHILS and W. Wouwerman's earliest dated work, of 1639 (sale London, Christie's, October 10, 1972), is of minor quality. However, during the 1640s his talents improved rapidly. During that period he was strongly influenced by the Haarlem painter Pieter van Laer (1599 - after 1642) with respect to both style and subject matter. This tallies with Houbraken's remark that Wouwerman laid his hands on sketches and studies by Van Laer after that artist's death. Van Laer's influence is evident in Attack on a Coach, dated 1644, in the collection of the Prince of Liechtenstein, Vaduz. Several figures and details are quotations from works by Van Laer. Most of Wouwerman's compositions of the mid-1640os are dominated by a diagonally placed hill or dune covering most of the horizon, a tree - often dead - as a repoussoir and a few rather large figures, usually with horses. Landscape with Peasants Merrymaking in front of a Cottage in the City Art Gallery, Manchester, Battle Scene in the National Gallery, London and Landscape with a Resting Horseman in the Museum der Bildcnden Künste, Leipzig, all dated 1646, are proof that Wouwerman gradually developed his own style; nonetheless, Van Laer continued to be an important source of inspiration. As demonstrated by the four known dated paintings of 1649, the artist had replaced his sombre palette for a more colourful one by that time, and had also adopted a predominantly more horizontal scheme for his compositions. During that same period Wouwerman' pictures came to reflect a growing interest in landscape, and in the first half of the 1650s he produced a number of paintings which bear witness to his mastery of the landscape idiom. In a Landscape with Horsemen, of 1652, in a private British collection, painted in silvery tones, the figures and horses are reduced to a fairly insignificant staffage. Genre elements continued to play an important role in most of his paintings, though. One of his most successful works of that period is the Festive Peasants before a Panorama, dated 1653, in the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. Perhaps nowhere else in his oeuvre did the artist succeed in producing such a happy synthesis of genre and landscape elements. In the second half of the 1650s Wouwerman painted many of the fanciful hunting scenes - often with a vaguely Italian setting and brighter local colours - which were particularly sought after in the 18th and early 19th centuries. Only a few dated works from the last decade of his life have been preserved, but they do show a tendency towards more sombre colours and suggest a slight decline in his artistic skills. Van Laer's stylistic influence on Wouwerman had almost disappeared by then, although it continued to play a major role in terms of subject matter. After the middle of the 19th century Wouwerman's popularity waned, but more recently his work has met with increasing acclaim.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Ecobiological study of medicinal plants includes the analysis of particular soil features and the ecological indexes of plant species as site indicators. Two experimental serpentine areas in northwest and central Serbia were selected to identify the potential limiting factors for medicinal plant harvesting. Soil analysis is done according to ICP methodology – ICP Forest Manual, Part III, Soil Sampling and Analysis (1998). Floristic and phytocoenological investigations were carried out by Wasthoff-van der Maarel (1973). The assessment of soil quality is based on the calculation of indicator values of available nitrogen (N), heavy metals, and the sensitivity to acidification. According to our results, N (12.1–17.5), acidification (7–12), and indicator values for some heavy metals (0.3–46.5) show a low biological availability. Medicinal plant species at the investigated areas have low values of ecological indexes: N (2.41–2.82), moisture (2.45–2.70) and soil acidity (3.35–3.70). Hydrothermic conditions indicate the predominant presence of sub-xerophytes, semi-sciophytes and mesothermic species. These types of plant species are recommended for exploitation.
