Abstract:
Abstract Starting with Andrew Jackson, presidential candidates in the United States used campaign biographies as useful political tools, and since 1824 no presidential election year has passed without a campaign biography. Martin Van Buren, President Jackson’s successor in the White House, became a target of a vicious campaign intended to prevent his election. His Whig opponents used a number of literary genres to slander him, including a mock campaign biography and a novel. The article focuses on the portrayal of Martin Van Buren in The Life of Martin Van Buren, allegedly written by Davy Crockett in 1835, and a novel named The Partisan Leader; A Tale of the Future, written by Nathaniel Beverley Tucker in 1836. Though being of different genres, these curious and obscure works have certain things in common - they were written under pseudonyms, their main goal was to prevent the election of Martin Van Buren and both of them failed in their goal.

Loseke, Ezekiel. "Martin Van Buren, National Parties, and the Return of the Working Man’s Guilds." Catholic Social Science Review 28 (2023): 81–94. http://dx.doi.org/10.5840/cssr20232813.

Full text
Abstract:
Catholic social teaching prescribes decentralized politics and protections for workers, once traditionally provided by associations such as medieval workers’ guilds. The animating principle behind this idea is subsidiarity. This article considers the political actions of Martin Van Buren, the eighth president of the United States (1837–1841), which resulted in the creation of the two-party system now used in America. Van Buren was not Catholic, and his actions were motivated by a desire to prevent the rise of oligarchy in American. Nevertheless, by providing a careful analysis of the term “subsidiarity” and the actions of Van Buren, the author concludes Van Buren’s political actions were a very good illustration Catholic social teaching in action, and, by extension, how deeply (and unwittingly!) the United States has been influenced by Catholic precepts.

Curley, Nick. "Death of The Limited License to Data: United States v. Van Buren." SMU Science and Technology Law Review 25, no. 1 (2022): 47. http://dx.doi.org/10.25172/smustlr.25.1.4.

Full text
Abstract:
The United States Supreme Court has normally viewed data as property. Yet in United States v. Van Buren, the Court abandoned the property law angle. Van Buren included examination of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act’s applicability to a police officer who accepted a bribe from undercover agents to look up a phony license plate. The Court held that under the CFAA someone only “exceeds authorized access” when they properly access a computer and then improperly access files “that are off limits to [them].” This Case Note explores why the Supreme Court should not have abandoned the property analogy to data. The Court is wrong because it has effectively destroyed the limited license to data. Further, the Court’s analysis of the underlying technology leaves several questions unanswered for companies seeking to protect their data and employees looking to comply with the CFAA. For instance, users may have different levels of authorized access such as “Read” or “Write” permissions. But the Court merely approached data with an on/off false dichotomy. Van Buren ignores the nuance of data authority in the modern age.

Abstract:
When considering the causes of secularization in the Western societies, one must mention sociological and political consequences of both the World War II and Holocaust. Extermination of the Jewish nation prompted raising the question of “why did God allow Auschwitz?” Many Jewish and Christian theologians attempted to explain the moral collapse in the time of Holocaust. Part of them was related to the so-called Death of God theology, the theological movement which interpreted a radical secularization of the Western culture in many ways. The article discusses theological reflections of the Christian theologian Paul van Buren and the Jewish thinker Richard L. Rubenstein. They are considered to belong to the movement of the Death of God theology, though in both cases such classification is not justified. Both interpret Holocaust in the perspective of God’s silence, and both search for new notions and meanings for God in the secular world after Auschwitz.
