Abstract:
The grain/oilseed industry is undergoing considerable structural change through mergers and new value-added businesses, which raises price-related questions. We analyze the level of price integration prior to and following a merger between two grain firms and the start-up of a producer-owned ethanol facility. This research utilizes error correction vector autoregression analysis to compute market integration structural change effects. We find evidence that market integration initially increases with the merger, but deteriorates with time following the merger. We find no significant localized change in the level of price integration for the case of a new value-added business.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to compare performance measurement systems from the literature with current performance measurement approaches in practice to get a better understanding of the complex relationships between workplace change, added value and organisational performance. To be able to measure the added value of workplace change, a valid and reliable performance measurement system is needed to measure the impact of the work environment on organisational performance before and after the change. A second aim is to have a closer look at the appraisal of workplace change by the end users. Design/methodology/approach – A review of the literature traced various performance measurement systems with different performance areas and key performance indicators (KPIs). Three case studies were conducted, two in Thailand, and one in The Netherlands, to explore if and how these theoretical insights are applied in current practice. Due to the worldwide introduction of New Ways of Working, special attention is paid to employee satisfaction and perceived productivity support. Findings – Many performance criteria and KPIs from literature are used in practice. However, apart from the balanced scorecard, no performance measurement system from literature is literally applied. Regarding most issues, none of the organisations conducted a comparison of the impact of their real estate on organisational performance before and after the change. In one case only, both ex ante and ex post data were collected about the appraisal of change by the end users. Research limitations/implications – The number of cases is limited. Additional case studies in depth are needed to get a wider picture of practice. Besides, still much work has to be done to operationalise the performance criteria. Practical implications – The performance measurement systems that were found in theory and practice can be used as input to value adding management of facilities. Based on the findings, a step-by-step procedure is presented to facilitate the selection of prioritised KPIs. Originality/value – This research connects the concepts of performance measurement and adding value by workplace change with data from two different continents.

Abstract:
Sustainability assessments should be based on financial and non-financial indicators. To describe the financial situation of companies and to calculate the actual economic profit of a company, the Economic Value Added methodology appears as a suitable solution. The aim of the paper is to apply the Economic Value Added methodology to real-life corporate data and present the company’s value through a case study. This study is based on information that was gathered through an extensive literature review (research publications and research studies (documents) about sustainability, corporate social responsibility, Sustainable Value concept, and Economic Value Added (EVA) methodology; and the company’s financial statements with notes of the selected company) using Internet and research databases and the author’s own experience. Methods of analysis, comparison, selection, abstraction, induction, deduction, determination, and statistics were used. In addition to the positives, this evaluation method also has negatives, including limitations (problems) in measuring a company’s value.

Abstract:
Today, the automotive industry is becoming one of the essential industries in a country due to high demand from customers. This increasing demand also causes the companies in the manufacturing industry to be exposed to increasing challenges with respect to cost-effectiveness, lead time, and quality of production systems. This situation also increases the waste that occurs in the production line which is basically due to poor plant processes where excessive movement and the high processing time occur. From the previous research that the current method to detect waste is not effective where most methods do not fulfill the same framework, conditions, objectives, level, or degree of completion of detecting waste in the production line. In this paper, effort is made to detect non value added in automotive industry using VSM. VSM entails the mapping the industry current process and evaluating it for waste and bottleneck by calculating value-added and non-value-added time. The data was collected from incoming warehouse until the outgoing warehouse. The data is also taken during the observed component as it passes through the machining, painting, assembly, final assemby and final inspection processes. Based on the analysis of bottlenecks, solutions are suggested, and a future state map is created. The lead time of the process is improved by 67% where the waste is reduce to 74% based on created map.

Abstract:
Narrative case studies have shown that, when people are involved in an evaluation of a program they are part of, it can change how they experience the program. This study used a quasi-experiment to test this proposition empirically in the context a participatory action research curriculum called Youth as Researchers. Half of all Youth as Researcher groups engaged in a participatory evaluation (PE) of their program experience through writing reflective essays, creating their own evaluation questions, and conducting peer interviews. The other half served as control groups and did not engage in the PE activities. Pre-/posttest surveys and focus group data were used to assess differences among the experimental and control groups. Study results show that participants in the experiment had important differences in their experiences in the program as a result of participation in the evaluation. Implications for future practice and research are also explored.

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the influence of applying Orem’s self-care framework practice methodology on the content and comprehensiveness of a case study about a woman who denied having self-care deficits. The discussion begins with presentation of the case as it might have been found in a classroom or health professions journal and contrasts this with application of Orem’s self-care framework practice methodology to illustrate how much more comprehensive the content of the case study is and how well it highlights the role of the primary care nurse practitioner in complex geriatric care. Through application of Orem’s practice methodology, the nurse practitioner is better able to address the high-level risk experienced by an older adult with complex comorbidities whose only initial complaint was “imbalance.”

Abstract:
AbstractIn the actual climate change scenario, in situ conservation of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture can significantly contribute broadening the diversity of our food system as well as increasing its resilience; nevertheless, landrace cultivation has been dramatically reduced in the last decades all over Europe. One of the most effective approaches to counteract the loss of landrace diversity in situ is facilitating its use. Aims of this study were to (i) describe how in situ maintenance of landraces occurs in different agro-environmental conditions in Europe and (ii) identify the main factors influencing landrace added values and accessibility as means to increase their adoption by new farmers. To the purpose, a collection of 95 case studies of both garden and open field landraces maintained in situ was analysed. A first description was obtained by classifying the information into 18 purposely defined categories. Data on landraces added values and accessibility were further transformed into weighted variables; the derived quantitative scores were then used as dependent variables in univariate and multivariate analyses. Results showed that farmers alone are still the main actors maintaining landraces in situ across different European biogeographical regions, mainly carrying out their activity under organic or low-input conditions, often in marginal areas. Results of the multivariate analysis showed that (i) type of actor involved in the multiplication, (ii) the main use of the product and (iii) presence of promotion actions significantly affect garden landraces added value and accessibility; presence of promotion actions was the only factor affecting added value of open field entries. Evidence arising from this work can contribute to the establishment of a fruitful ground of discussion for future European policies and strategies to protect and increase landrace use.

Value-added models help to evaluate the knowledge that school districts, schools, and teachers add to student learning as students progress through school. In this article, the well-known Education Value-Added Assessment System (EVAAS) is examined. The author presents a practical investigation of the methodological issues associated with the model. Specifically, she argues that, although EVAAS is probably the most sophisticated value-added model, it has flaws that must be addressed before widespread adoption. She explores in depth the shortage of external reviews and validity studies of the model, its insufficient user-friendliness, and methodological issues about missing data, regression to the mean, and student background variables. She also examines a paradigm case in which the model was used to advance unfounded assertions.

Abstract:
Abstract The future of sustainable development is the bioeconomy with both global and local renewable energy solutions. The updated Bioeconomy Strategy and the Green Deal serves as prove of European Commission commitment for transformation towards a sustainable and climate-neutral European Union. This process is characterized with an enormous complexity and should be studied thoroughly for designing transition pathways. Scientifically sound methods can support policymaking in dealing with uncertainty and complexity taking place within definition of transition pathways. This article reviews the existing bioeconomy development models, and presents a novel model, which focus on agriculture – one of the main directions of the national economy. The concept of model is tested within a case study of crop production sector in Latvia. The results of case study show economically viable scenario for added value target set for 2030. In the crop sector, the baseline scenario and three alternative scenarios were analysed. The highest added value and the most advantageous alternative scenario is for fibre powder produced from cereal bran (in the bioeconomy sector, food provides the highest added value).

Abstract:
Accurate evaluation of land value-added benefit brought by urban rail transit (URT) is critical for project investment decision making and value capture strategy development. Early studies have focused on the value impact strength under the assumption of the same impact range for all stations. However, the value impact range at different stations may vary owing to different accessibilities. Therefore, the present study releases this assumption and incorporates the changed impact range into the land value-added analysis. It presents a method to determine the range of land value-added impact and sample selection using the generalized transportation cost model, then spatial econometric models are further developed to estimate the impact strength. On the basis of these models, the entire value-added benefit brought by URT is evaluated. A case study of the Changsha Metro Line 2 in China is discussed to demonstrate the procedure, model, and analysis of spatial impact. The empirical analysis shows a dumbbell-shaped impact on the land value-added benefit along the transit line with a distance-dependent pattern at each station. In addition, the land value-added benefit from Changsha Metro Line 2 reached 12.099 billion USD. Lastly, two main value-added benefit capture modes are discussed, namely, land integration development and special land tax.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate opportunities to move benchmarking studies toward a strategic level. The authors benchmarked how service prices are defined based on the value added for the customer. Design/methodology/approach – A multi-case research investigated how manufacturers can increase their service revenues; how corporate reputation can be analyzed to enhance financial and market performance; how customer satisfaction and price acceptance are related; and how benchmark studies can move to a more strategic level based on a conjoint analysis of value and price. Findings – Price’s benchmarking studies must combine the customers’ value demands; the customer expectations associated to each value demand; the competitor prices; and the revenue alternatives that a supplier can explore (e.g. sale of new goods, services for new goods, services for non-new goods, and repair parts). The combination of these elements reveals several opportunities for revenue generation. This combination may also help to explain the existence of different prices for similar goods and services. The authors referred to this as a flexible pricing policy. Flexible pricing may help manufacturers maximize revenues, and win and maintain customers. Research limitations/implications – The following research questions are suggested for future studies: What other elements should be considered in strategic benchmarking studies? What other elements can influence a flexible pricing policy for goods, spare parts, and services? In what contexts can a flexible pricing policy be applied? How should flexible pricing practices be benchmarked? Practical implications – A strategic benchmarking study must first identify the customers’ value demands. It is then necessary to analyze customer expectations associated to each value demand. As shown, customers may have different expectations for the same product or service. Similar expectations must be grouped together in order to allow a well-structured benchmark. Originality/value – The authors’ findings suggest interesting points to be observed by the manufacturers who supply integrated solutions with a long life cycle.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine various aspects of regional and global production networks, with a special focus on China. Design/methodology/approach – The author studies four different approaches to measure production networks and discuss their strengths and weaknesses. The author presents some of the results associated with some of these measurements. Findings – The author finds that using trade data alone is simple but incomplete. Bringing in input–output tables is useful but much more data would be needed. In addition, for the case of China, electronic goods and telecommunication goods tend to have a higher foreign value added. Research limitations/implications – Data with good quality can be a problem. The authors also have difficulty getting input–output tables for many years. Practical implications – The results can guide policymakers as to which industries can create more domestic value added. The results can also lead to betting of an understanding of trade balances measured in the value added. Social implications – The results can generate further understanding among citizens of many different countries, including China, about the importance of different sectors in generating the value added. Originality/value – The value of this paper is to focus on alternative ways to measure the value added in exports from China. The paper is the first to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of different approaches and present some of these results.

Abstract:
In this article, Value Added Tax (VAT) is examined as a legal transplant. The legal transplants theory relies on the assumption that legal transplants are the primary driver behind legal change. In order to establish whether this is the case for VAT, the distribution of VAT across the world is examined. This spread, however, should be evaluated against the different legal VAT families that may be identified around the world in order to determine if the identity of the transplanted system remains. That said, VAT families vary over time, and there is no specified definition of different VAT families. The establishment of the relevance of studying VAT as a legal transplant may feasibly lead to a discussion on whether a legal transplant approach is appropriate for comparative research in VAT since such an approach entails a risk for too much emphasis on similarities. The fact that statutes appear to be similar does not necessarily mean that the law is the same due to various factors such as legal culture. However, with an awareness of the inadequacies of the legal transplants approach as a method for comparative studies, the approach may provide valuable insight into explaining the similarities and differences in VAT. Abstract:
Living Labs—innovation units established to introduce new methods and approaches into public sector organizations—have received a lot of attention as methods for experimentation and open innovation practices in public sector organizations. However, little is known so far about how they co-create public value and which conditions influence these co-creation practices. Therefore, the research questions are: which organizational factors influence the process of public value co-creation and which outcomes and values are produced as a result? The research questions were answered by employing a qualitative research approach conducting semi-structured interviews with employees and participants of three living labs in Germany and Austria. The results show top-level support and lab leadership as the most important context factors. Living labs produce tangible and intangible outcomes. The tangible outcomes are the products developed within the lab, and the intangible outcomes are created by the interaction between the lab’s participants. The main contributions are twofold: first, context factors are identified that lead to the success of co-creation processes within living labs. Second, the study contributes to the literature on public value because it is shown that participation in living labs itself leads to added value in addition to the tangible and intangible outcomes.

Abstract:
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the role of intellectual capital investment in improving the firm's market value, stakeholders' value and financial performance. Using data drawn from 21 listed companies in Tunisia Stock Exchange, we conducted two studies. On one hand, from using Charreaux (Charreaux (2006). La valeur partenariale: Vers une mesure opérationnelle. Cahier de FARGO no. 1061103, November) measure of stakeholders' value, we demonstrate that financials come to present the weakest stakeholders' value and clients monopolises in term of value acquisition due to a weak ability of negotiation of firms. On the other hand, we construct a regression model of Pulic's value added intellectual capital investment (VAIC) as the measure of the value added from intellectual capital, in market valuation and financial performance. Our results stressed the fact that there is a positive impact of intellectual capital by human capital efficiency and capital employed efficiency on improving firm's market value. Nevertheless, financial performance measured by ROA is still justified by the traditional measure relying on capital employed efficiency. Indeed for Tunisian quoted firms, human capital investment is a pilar for ameliorating firm market valuation of financial performance.

Abstract:
Experimental economics is a research tool, where information collected in conducted experiments is used to verify the validity of economic theories, estimate the size of the studied effect or highlight the market mechanism. Economic experiments usually use money (virtual or real) to motivate participants to imitate the real incentives that occur in real markets. Experiments are used to understand how and why markets and other exchange systems operate in this way. The purpose of this chapter is to use the achievements of experimental economics to assess social added value that arises in the course of the production and delivery of public goods and to verify the effectiveness of public policy instruments that can stimulate such social added value. The article consists of (1) conceptual and methodological part, in which the details of the experiment were presented, (2) description of the research sample and (3) analysis of the results of the experiment together with developed conclusions and indications for further research on this issue. The conclusions of this article can be used in business practice in the process of programming by public authorities of instruments supporting specific public policies. Research background: Nowadays, mainstream discussions on maritime spatial planning (MSP) are tightly intertwined with the discourse on governance for land-sea interactions or interface (LSI), using multi-scalar and cross-sectoral governance systems. At the same time, principles with legal rank need to be respected and applied in both MSP and LSI and their respective governance structures while putting coastal communities at the centre and taking into consideration the process of “maritimisation.” In combination, these factors contribute to augmenting the pressure of competing uses both on land and sea in the frame of the Blue Economy. As an exemplary forerunner in the field of MSP, the Baltic Sea Region (BSR) and its case studies can provide a useful insight in this respect. Purpose of the article: The aim is to identify and integrate the principles with legal rank of Effective Governance for sustainable development to be implemented through different LSI governance perspectives and in the framework of MSP and the Blue Economy, providing concise guidance as to their application through BSR case studies. Methods: Preparation of this article involves applying traditional legal research methods (analysis and synthesis) and the results of maritime spatial plans and practical examples of pilot projects. Analysis includes the following techniques: descriptive, historical, special analytical and dogmatically comparable, including an analytical perspective of transnational environmental law. Synthesis is applied through the legally constructive method. Findings & Value added: Based on conclusions and lessons learned from BSR case studies, the article offers added value by structuring and improving knowledge and providing a basis for further theoretical discussion.

Abstract:
Indirect taxes have a dominant role in the whole tax structure of developing countries like Nepal. VAT has been in operation for the last Eighteen years; still it is facing a number of challenges owing to poor administration, lack of good faith and honesty, rampant corruption, political instability, the problems of non-issuance of bill, narrow coverage, etc. For the improvement in effective VAT implementation, various areas including proper billing system, efficient tax administration, intensive billing enforcement, wide coverage, computerization, etc. VAT registrants are involving in VAT fraud. In this situation IRD has the various challenges to control the VAT evasion and implement the policy in effective and efficient way. The study is focused on the effectiveness of the VAT implementation of VAT collection policy in real field. Hence, its main objective is to analyze the effectiveness of the VAT implementation. For efficient implementation VAT officials have to perform effectively. The IRO Pokhara is working hard to collect more and more VAT so far as possible from its working area. Many taxpayer educations program in different places and compulsorily registration campaign to VAT program have been organized by IRO, Pokhara. The effectiveness of IRO, Pokhara and its officials seemed as satisfactory. With regard to fairness, friendliness with VAT registrants and overall effectiveness is at satisfactory level. Most of registrants are satisfied with the administrative mechanism of VAT in Nepal as well as with the availability of VAT document and information and its clarity. But in case of getting VAT refund in cash VAT registrant are not satisfied. Except in case of VAT refund in cash most satisfaction level of VAT registrants toward present VAT collection policy and practice seems to be at a satisfactory level. The market monitoring and investigation is the main tool that IRO, Pokhara is applying to control the VAT evasion. Similarly taxpayer education, current year audit and tax audit, billing enforcement, and e-base tax system are the other the major tools and techniques obtained by IRD to control the VAT evasion. Abstract:
Basically, this study explores the effect of value-added tax on the Retail and Wholesale sector and consumer behavior in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Imposing the value-added tax system on some goods and services is considered one of the most important issues that affected the Saudi society to classify it as a consumer society. It is expected that this added tax on sales in the market will have an impact on investment in the national economy. The researcher relied on the use of the descriptive analytical method and found that the most appropriate tool to achieve the objectives of this study is the “questionnaire”. While explaining the effects of value-added tax on the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the study methodology is based on valid data and analysis. All the descriptive, analytical and statistical research studies and the survey tool show that value-added tax has an effect on the economy of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It is expected that value-added tax will be beneficial for Retail and Wholesale sector and change the consumer behavior when the efficiency and performance of the tax department are improved. It is recommended improving the individual income before implementing value-added tax. For implementation of value-added tax, individuals need to be aware about it through social media or public campaigns.

Abstract:
It has been 12 years after Porter and Teisberg published their landmark manuscript on “Redefining Health Care.” Apart from stressing the need for a fundamental change from fee-for-service to value or outcome-based financing and to a focus on reducing waste, they emphasized the need to work along patient pathways and in Integrated Practice Units to overcome function based and specialist group silos and promote working in multidisciplinary patient-oriented teams. Integrated Practice Units are defined as “organized around the patient and providing the full cycle of care for a medical condition, including patient education, engagement, and follow-up and encompass inpatient, outpatient and rehabilitative care as well as supporting services.” Although relatively few papers are published with empirical evidence on Integrated Practice Units development, some providers have impressively developed pathways and integrated care toward alignment with Integrated Practice Units criteria. From the field, we learn that possible advantages lay in improving patient centeredness, breaking through professional boundaries, and reducing waste in unnecessary duplications. A firm body of evidence on the added value of turning pathways into Integrated Practice Units is hard to find and this leaves room for much variation. Although intuitively attractive, this development requires staff efforts and costs and therefore cost-effectiveness and budget impact studies are much needed. Randomized controlled trials may be difficult to realize in organizational research, it is long known that turning to alternative designs such as larger case study series and before–after designs can be helpful. Thus, it can become clear what added value is achievable and how to reach that.

Abstract:
Abstract Although stigma was first theorized as a basic social process, its contemporary developments have been highly compartmentalized. Understanding the nature of stigma—how it operates across subjects and circumstances—requires a return to general theory. The authors take this general turn, focusing on stigma’s discursive element. Through combined case studies of race, disability, and fat stigma (134 interviews with 146 parents), they develop the stigma discourse-value framework (DVF) as a theoretical scaffold for stigma discourse studies. The DVF includes three value-oriented categories: stigma as deficit, value-neutral diversity, and value-added pride. Tracing commonalities and divergences within and between cases vis-à-vis the DVF, the authors show stigma discourse to be a multifaceted interpersonal process that variously reflects, reinforces, and challenges stigmatizing social structures.

Abstract:
Lean manufacturing is one of the initiatives that many major businesses in the world have been trying to adopt in order to remain competitive in an increasingly global market. The focus of the approach is on cost reduction by eliminating non-value added activities. Originating from the Toyota Production System, many of the tools and techniques of lean manufacturing have been widely used in discrete manufacturing. The purpose of this study is to investigate the approach of adopting lean, the tools and techniques implemented, the changes in the organizations, the problems encountered as well as the lessons learnt. This paper describes the results and findings of four industrial case studies conducted in different electrical and electronics companies in Malaysia. Interviews were conducted with the key personnel to answer some issues which were crucial in this study. Comparisons and discussion were made among the case companies. One of the key findings obtained is that people in the organization should take the lean mind-set and act in the lean way in order to make a lean initiative successful. The application of kaizen and 7 quality control tools are most popular implementation in the selected case study companies as the tools to eliminate non-value added activities.

Abstract:
This paper seeks to explain differences in policy outcomes even when political institutions remain unchanged over time. It studies the making of Ghana’s most important fiscal policy after its transition to democracy in 1993. This study focuses on the making of the Value Added Tax (VAT) policy at two different time periods. In spite of unchanging political institutions, each episode, in 1995 and 1998, had a different outcome. This paper explores the extent to which the preferences of institutional actors can account for policy changes under the constraints and opportunities created by those same political institutions within the policymaking process. The paper employs George Tsebelis’ veto player theory, which emanates from the rational choice institutionalist school and argues that, when political institutions remain unchanged over time, changes in veto players’ preferences can account for changes in the policy outcome of the VAT.

Abstract:
Purpose The objective of stadium owners is to attract visitors to their stadiums and by this optimally use their business potential. Stadiums face increasing competition from home-viewing options, with which especially aging stadiums have trouble competing. This paper aims to study the concept of smart stadiums as a solution to this problem, adding the corona age as an additional challenge. Design/methodology/approach First, (smart) stadium literature and theories are reviewed. Then, a case study is conducted, consisting of document review, observations and semi-structured interviews with specialists. The case that is studied is the Johan Cruijff Arena in Amsterdam – the stadium has the ambition to be the most innovative stadium in 2020. Findings Nine different smart tools were identified in the case study, which supports the optimization of various processes in the stadium such as ticketing and crowd control. The findings from this case study showed the potential of the smart stadium concept and how it can add value for the stadium’s stakeholders. The use of smart tools can improve the effectiveness and efficiency of stadium operations, and it can be used to improve the visitors’ experience. However, concrete numbers of progress were difficult to obtain because the smart tools were only recently implemented. Originality/value As seen in the past few years, more and more stadiums are branding themselves as a smart stadium. However, research on this subject is still scarce: existing research focused on other types of real estate. By exploring the work done in theory and practice, the authors hope to increase research on the subject of smart stadiums.

Abstract:
The importance of values in the development of society and the establishment of relations among individuals has made the social studies course important in the transfer of values. Because the social studies course is intertwined with values by its nature whether it is given directly or not. In this framework, values were included in every learning area, unit and subject of the social studies course, which was included in the curriculum for the first time in 1968. However, the explicit inclusion of values under a title in social studies curriculum was in 2005 with the reorganization of the education system according to the constructivist approach. The curricula have been made more explanatory and systematic compared to previous curricula. It has continued in the same way to the present day. In this study, in which the curricula that have been implemented since 2005 are examined, the values are given in tables by using the document analysis method. Then, it was interpreted by subjecting it to descriptive analysis. Thus, it is purposed to reveal the change and transformation by determining the values added and removed in the social studies curriculum.

The study analyses the role of the transit function in the development of a regional transport system drawing on the example of the Kaliningrad exclave region (Russia). The article studies the role and extent of the impact of changes in the volume and structure of transit operations on the value-added creation in the regional economy. The assessment of the transit function was conducted using analytical software for strategizing and situational forecasting of the socio-economic development of the Kaliningrad region, the analogue of which is the CGE-model. The article describes the results of the regional value-added modelling based on the integrated index of gross regional product (GRP) and the changing volume and structure of transit cargo. The article explores the transit specialisation options for the Kaliningrad region based on different scenarios of its social and economic development and the changes in external factors. The results can be applied to similar studies on assessing the transit potential of a particular territory and developing measures to support the transportation system development in other regions.

Modern fermentation processes include a variety of fermentation methods, such as fed batch fermentation and continuous fermentation. This paper will focus on the principles and case studies of these two methods. Fed batch fermentation originates from fractionation fermentation with closed culture and adjustment of the pH value of the carbon source, to which the process of feeding the carbon source to the cell culture in a controlled manner has been added. This type of fermentation is more commonly used compared to the other. Continuous fermentation is also a closed fermentation system, which can operate without restrictions by continuous or intermittent addition of fresh nutrient media to the fermenter; however, it is susceptible to contamination by stray bacteria and metabolic inconvenience.

Abstract:
From ancient times, the medicinal properties of the different Eucalyptus species are well known. In fact, plants from this family have been used in folk medicine as antiseptics, and to treat different ailments of the upper respiratory tract such as sinus congestion, common cold, or influenza. Moreover, other biological activities were described for Eucalyptus species such as antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. In the last few decades, numerous investigations revealed that the compounds responsible for these properties are secondary metabolites that belonging to the group of phenolic compounds and are present in different parts of the plants such as leaves, bark, wood, fruits, and stumps. The increasing demand for natural compounds that can substitute synthetic antioxidants and the increase in resistance to traditional antibiotics have boosted the intense search for renewable natural sources containing substances with such bioactivities, as well as greener extraction technologies and avant-garde analytical methods for the identification of the target molecules. The literature data used in this paper were collected via Scopus (2001–2020) using the following search terms: Eucalyptus, extraction methods, phenolic compounds, and biological activities. This review collects the main studies related to the recovery of value-added compounds from different Eucalyptus species, as well as their biofunctional applications.

Abstract:
Purpose – China is a leading country in the production, consumption and exports of value-added wood products. Despite this fact, the sources of competitiveness and the existing strategies in the Chinese wood products companies have not been profoundly studied in an international context. The purpose of this paper is to fill these gaps by exploring managerial perceptions of these issues. Design/methodology/approach – The theoretical ingredients originating from the value chain theory, functional upgrading, the dynamic capability perspective and the natural resource-based view were combined to explore the shift of business functions and sources of the firm-level competitiveness in the Chinese wood products companies. In the empirical part, data from qualitative semi-structured interviews made with 28 managers of seven companies in China based on the case study method were used. Findings – Our results indicate a transition from non-branded manufacturing to original equipment manufacturing to original brand manufacturing business model. With this strategic transformation, the amount of resources and the relative importance of intangible resources increased and the nature of tangible resources also changed. Practical implications – Chinese companies tend to shift from low-value-added to high-value-added products production. Our results are not only informative about the current situation of the Chinese wood products companies, but also can be used as a background for assessing the impact of China’s increasing competitiveness on the future international wood products market. Originality/value – The dynamic capability perspective was incorporated in a new empirical approach to study the strategic management of woodworking industries, and our results provide new information on the importance of intangible resources for firm competitiveness.

Abstract:
Making strategic innovations to agricultural value chains can be difficult. Complex biophysical and logistical interactions make a priori estimates of chain-wide impacts difficult. This paper gives the results of applying an agent-based, value chain modelling framework, developed and applied in participation with stakeholders in three sugar mill case studies, which evaluated the viability of maximising the co-generation of electricity by harvesting the whole crop (i.e. cane leaves as well as stalk). The existing practice of harvesting predominantly cane stalk (as in the 2003 production year) was the base case for comparing a scenario where electricity co-generation (from crop residues) was an added revenue stream. Increased revenues were compared to costs within sectors as per changes in biophysical flows for the grower, harvesting, transport and milling segments in the chain. In general, predicted impacts on the farming and milling sectors were greater than anticipated by stakeholders, while the impacts on the harvesting and transport sectors were less than anticipated because of increased logistical efficiency possible in the sectors. A virtual experience of their supply chain facilitated more complete knowledge transfer about possible impacts of whole-crop harvesting to managers across the chain and thus increased their capacity to evaluate innovative business models involving the co-generation of electricity.

The aim of the paper is to investigate the importance of landscape design in the planning and designing of a residential property in Klang Valley. It has been proven that proper landscape planning and design with the sustainable concept and approach help to create conducive and responsive environment of residential properties. The paper employed quantitative approaches which includes i) a questionnaire survey; and ii) an observation. This empirical study is based on the findings of case studies conducted on several residential areas in Klang Valley. The findings show that the residents have very clear ideas both on how much green space is really important in residential areas in order to create a sustainable residential environment. Despite the absence of public actions in terms of providing information, encouraging participations in the survey and promoting awareness by those interviewed have shown considerable interest in promoting landscape design to be applied in real estate development. The perceptions of the quality and quantity of landscape designs in residential areas and how landscape design can influence the values of real estate developments especially in Klang Valley can be further researched for future study.

Abstract:
The main objective of this paper is to investigate the updates brought by the New Economy, especially new business models brought by digitalization, on value-based management. This objective is to see if classic value-based management and the updates brought by the New Economy conflict or are somehow harmonized or complementary. Another objective is to illustrate the updates brought by digitalization as case object on Siemens as case subject. The paper is focused on value-based management particularities for digitalization products, services, solutions. The context of the paper is digitalization technology and its impact on business and society, digital transformation. The phenomenon is new to society in all and therefore both literature review and case studies are highly relevant. The article is a case study on a top European corporation, both leader in digitalization and excellent value-based management practitioner. The case study is exploratory and descriptive, searching for the connections between digitalization and value. It relies on secondary evidence about Siemens. The questions are how New Economy value patterns work in practice and how do they relate to classic value indicators, net present value of discounted cash flow or its equivalent Economic Value Added. The paper finds a connection between innovation lifecycle and investment approval or capital budgeting. The beginning of the project lifecycle involves investment in intangible assets, business models, an open network structure and is funded by venture capital. As the idea matures close to customer contract negotiation stages, the network structure turns into a project budgeted via program management and equity and debt. The findings show how so-called new capital budgeting methods, venture capital, are reconciled with classic value-based management using equity and debt and Economic Value-Added investment appraisal. Both funding methods have their logic and place in idea lifecycle at Siemens. The paper finds a match between the lean start-up method and early stages of digital offering lifecycle, and a complementarity between venture capital funding methods and equity and debt capital funding methods given by the innovation lifecycle.

SUMMARYIn 2008, nationwide investigations of a Salmonella serotype Saintpaul outbreak led first to consumer warnings for Roma and red round tomatoes, then later for jalapeño and serrano peppers. In New Mexico, where there were a large number of cases but no restaurant-based clusters, the NM Department of Health and the Indian Health Service participated with CDC in individual-level and household-level case-control studies of infections in New Mexico and the Navajo Nation.
