Harris, Shelley B. "A value-added approach to determine the relationships of mentoring to novice teacher classroom effectiveness." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2008. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc9773/.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of the study was to determine the relationship between scores of the new teachers' classroom effectiveness with numerical indexes of mentor support, mentor infrastructure, and workplace ecology. In addition, this study sought to determine the effect of various demographics (i.e., gender, age, race, degree, teaching level, and certification route) on the Classroom Effectiveness Index (CEI) scores of first-year teachers, and to determine the differences, if any, between the Classroom Effectiveness Index scores of first-year teachers who remained on campus, switched campuses, or left the district. This study is primarily correlational in nature - looking for relationships between quantifiable variables. The subjects are 68 first-year teachers. The mandatory mentoring program the subjects were involved in consisted of a paid, veteran teacher who worked on the same campus as the first-year teacher and assisted in instructional or behavioral needs. This study measured the impact of the first-year teachers' mentoring experiences to the Classroom Effectiveness Index scores and teacher retention. The findings suggest that the Classroom Effectiveness Index scores might not be an appropriate tool for uncovering which aspects of mentoring contribute to student achievement and retention. Adding the value-added measurement tool to the categories of mentor support (MS), mentor infrastructure (MI), and workplace ecology (WE), rendered no statistically significant results. Therefore, further research is necessary to continue to define the effective characteristics of mentoring and its impact on classroom effectiveness and retention.

Xie, Yamin. "The value-added in strategic merger : A case study from Chinese port industry restructuring." Thesis, Umeå University, Umeå School of Business, 2009. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:umu:diva-34865.

Full text
Abstract:

In the process of Chinese central companies’ restructuring, the strategic merger is becoming the popular trend nowadays. The thesis chooses a specific case of Shanghai International Port Group (hereafter referred to SIPG) stock swap absorption merging Shanghai Port Container Company (hereafter referred to SPCC) which is the listed subsidiary company of SIPG for initial public offering in the whole happened in 2006. From the two aspects of financial indicators and market reaction, the thesis uses the method of financial analysis and event study analysis to do the value-added research about the case. One purpose of the research is to measure the current and follow-up value-added at and after the merger. Another purpose of the research is to find whether the value-added measured is abnormal or reflects the true intrinsic value.

In this paper, the Economic Value-added (hereafter referred to EVA), the Market Value-added (hereafter referred to MVA) and the Future Growth Value (hereafter referred to FGV) are used to measure the current and follow-up value added at and after the stock swap absorption merger between SIPG and SPCC. Through the research on the pivotal time point, the horizontal comparison of the EVA, MVA and FGV in the same time point and the vertical comparison of the value-added among different time points are taken respectively, which puts the emphasis on the research of the value-added before and after the merger in 2006 (2005, 2006) and the follow-up two years value-added after merger (2007, 2008).The analysis finds that both the economic value-added and the market value-added after the merger are above zero. The research shows that the market value-added is far more than the economic value-added and the future growth value has high proportion in the market value, which indicates the market value-added is more caused by the market anticipation than the incremental true intrinsic value and the economic value.

In this paper, event research method is used to do the research about the market response / reaction on the stock swap absorption merger between SIPG and SPCC. The event study which is based on the historical data of stock transactions chooses the appropriate event window, observes the change of stock price, calculates the abnormal return (hereafter referred to AR) and cumulative abnormal return (hereafter referred to CAR), and then detects whether the market value-added of listed company is abnormal or not. The study concludes that the market has the positive reaction about share swap absorption merger between SIPG and SPCC. The event of share swap merger can assuredly bring short-term abnormal value-added.

Finally, through combining the research findings and focusing on the value-added of companies before and after the merger, the thesis proposes some suggestions to the value manager of companies from financial management, corporate strategy, market tactics and information asymmetry problem which can help value managers to realize the companies’ goal of maximizing the value.

Rostamkalaei, Seyedeh Anoosheh. "Value Added by Venture Capitalists: The Case of EDC." Thèse, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/24265.

Full text
Abstract:
It is generally well understood that venture capital (VC) is an important and significant source of financing for small firms. Questions revolving around the increased likelihood of a firm backed by Venture Capitalists (VCs) to be export oriented have yet to be fully explored. Responding to this research gap, a sample of Canadian VC backed firms is used to compare the performance of Canadian VC firms in terms of facilitating internationalization among their portfolio companies. The particular reference of this study is Export Development Canada (EDC), a crown corporation mandated to promote export among Canadian firms. This research finds that EDC as a VC investor and export-oriented consultant has no association with the increased probability of exporting. Also, stage of the investment does not show any relationship with internationalization. These results run contrary to previous speculation that syndication of VCs increases the probability of internationalization among portfolio firms.

Siira, T. (Tuula). "Value creation by enterprise systems value added resellers:the case of PLM systems VARs." Doctoral thesis, Oulun yliopisto, 2012. http://urn.fi/urn:isbn:9789514299490.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract This study examines value creation by value added resellers (VARs) in the context of the enterprise systems business, with particular respect to product lifecycle management (PLM) systems. The purpose of the study is to increase theoretical and empirical understanding of value creation in this specific context by integrating the enterprise systems theory, the software ecosystems theory, the software business model theory, and the value creation theory. The theoretical framework assumes the perspective of the VARs, and examines their interactions with customers and suppliers during the value creation process. The customers and suppliers are the parties that perceive the value created by the VAR. The primary objective is to determine how and why the VAR creates value in the perception of its customers and suppliers. The method includes a qualitative case study research strategy in which empirical data were collected primarily through interviews with highly knowledgeable informants within three VAR organizations, five customer organizations, and five supplier organizations. Each source viewed the scope of the research questions from a diverse perspective. As a result of the empirical analysis, value creation by the VAR value was connected to the VAR type, the value creation strategy, and the business model. The VAR's strategy results from synergy and synchronization with its PLM system. The customer-perceived value is, in part, the value created by the VAR-customer business relationship. It is also partially specific to the customer type. A VAR creates value for its customers because its product and service offerings fulfill customer needs, and because it offers abilities, knowledge, expertise, and experience of interest to its customers. The most advanced value creation occurs when the business relationship is a source of co-value creation that creates value for both parties. The supplier-perceived value is also partially specific to the supplier type. The VAR- supplier business relationship creates value for suppliers because the VAR extends the supplier’s market presence, offers market and customer knowledge, and creates new business opportunities. This study is context-dependent and geographically and culturally focused on Nordic countries. The results reflect the contexts of the three research cases and their geographical and cultural areas, and as such are not generalizable
Tutkimusstrategia on laadullinen tapaustutkimus. Empiirinen materiaali on kerätty pääasiassa tekemällä haastatteluja kolmessa VAR-yrityksessä, sekä viidessä asiakasyrityksessä ja viidessä toimittajayrityksessä. Haastateltavilla oli hyvä ymmärrys tutkimuksen kohteesta. He arvioivat siihen liittyen tutkimuskysymyksiä useista eri näkökulmista. Arvontuotanto on osittain riippuvainen toimittajan tyypistä. Tutkimus on kontekstiriippuvainen.

Schiffler, Andreas. "New game physics : added value for transdisciplinary teams." Thesis, University of Plymouth, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10026.1/923.

Full text
Abstract:
This study focused on game physics, an area of computer game design where physics is applied in interactive computer software. The purpose of the research was a fresh analysis of game physics in order to prove that its current usage is limited and requires advancement. The investigations presented in this dissertation establish constructive principles to advance game physics design. The main premise was that transdisciplinary approaches provide significant value. The resulting designs reflected combined goals of game developers, artists and physicists and provide novel ways to incorporate physics into games. The applicability and user impact of such new game physics across several target audiences was thoroughly examined. In order to explore the transdisciplinary nature of the premise, valid evidence was gathered using a broad range of theoretical and practical methodologies. The research established a clear definition of game physics within the context of historical, technological, practical, scientific, and artistic considerations. Game analysis, literature reviews and seminal surveys of game players, game developers and scientists were conducted. A heuristic categorization of game types was defined to create an extensive database of computer games and carry out a statistical analysis of game physics usage. Results were then combined to define core principles for the design of unconventional new game physics elements. Software implementations of several elements were developed to examine the practical feasibility of the proposed principles. This research prototype was exposed to practitioners (artists, game developers and scientists) in field studies, documented on video and subsequently analyzed to evaluate the effectiveness of the elements on the audiences. The findings from this research demonstrated that standard game physics is a common but limited design element in computer games. It was discovered that the entertainment driven design goals of game developers interfere with the needs of educators and scientists. Game reviews exemplified the exaggerated and incorrect physics present in many commercial computer games. This “pseudo physics” was shown to have potentially undesired effects on game players. Art reviews also indicated that game physics technology remains largely inaccessible to artists. The principal conclusion drawn from this study was that the proposed new game physics advances game design and creates value by expanding the choices available to game developers and designers, enabling artists to create more scientifically robust artworks, and encouraging scientists to consider games as a viable tool for education and research. The practical portion generated tangible evidence that the isolated “silos” of engineering, art and science can be bridged when game physics is designed in a transdisciplinary way. This dissertation recommends that scientific and artistic perspectives should always be considered when game physics is used in computer-based media, because significant value for a broad range of practitioners in succinctly different fields can be achieved. The study has thereby established a state of the art research into game physics, which not only offers other researchers constructive principles for future investigations, but also provides much-needed new material to address the observed discrepancies in game theory and digital media design.

Kinigoma, Dagogo Dixon. "Contextual influences on HRM homogeneity and heterogeneity in SMEs : a case study of high value-added and low value-added sectors." Thesis, Liverpool John Moores University, 2013. http://researchonline.ljmu.ac.uk/6185/.

Full text
Abstract:
This research draws attention to the problematic premises underpinning the UK government's policy goal of a competitive national economy predicated on the notion of a high skills. high value-added economic trajectory. In particular, the research highlights the limitations of the policy assumptions (inherent in the Investors in People standard) that formalised HRM practices in SMEs in high value-added sectors make them more competitive than those in low value-added sectors, which are frequently associated with informal HRM practices. The research compared the selection and recruitment, training and development, and appraisal and rewards practices of SMEs. The methodological approach adopted was constructivist, with the assumption that SME owner-managers are involved in constructing their own individual reality based on how they perceive the world around them. A case study strategy was adopted to examine the H R.M" practices of a purposive sample of six SMEs in high value-added (3) and low value-added (3) sectors. Data collection combined semi-structured in-depth interviews with document searches. It was found that HRM in the sample of SMEs in both sectors combined formality and informality; characterised by institutional contextual (i.e. homogeneous) and situational contextual (i.e. heterogeneous) practices. It is suggested that a situational contextual perspective is simplistic in that although it acknowledges the interplay between HRM formality and informality, it fails to take account of the homogenising influence of the institutional contexts of SMEs. Consequently, just as normative models of HRM seek to isolate SMEs from their operating contexts, the situational contextual perspective dislocates SMEs from their institutional contexts. Therefore, the research contributes by proposing an open systems model, which reflects the complexity of HRM in SMEs by integrating the institutional and situational contextual perspectives of HRM. In view of the complexity of the HRM practices of SMEs, the research suggests a shift away from a market-led approach to skills based on the HRM practices of individual SMEs, towards direct intervention through government regulation as the most likely path to an economy in a high skill, high value-added equilibrium in the UK.

Atkacuna, Ilze, and Karolina Furlan. "Value-Added Services in Third-Party Logistics : A study from the TPL providers’ perspective about value-added service development, driving forces and barriers." Thesis, Jönköping University, JIBS, Centre of Logistics and Supply Chain Management, 2009. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hj:diva-10243.

Full text
Abstract:

Competition in the logistics service industry has constantly increased over the last decades which has lead to the traditional services offered by third-party logistics (TPL) providers becoming commodities and no longer offering attractive profit margins. When the company’s core product becomes a commodity, the company’s performance of supplementary services becomes vital for competitive advantage. The term “value-added service” is defined as a service adding extra feature, form or functions to the basic service and stands for all types of activities which are not directly based on services traditionally offered by TPL providers, i.e., transportation and warehousing. The term value-added service is mainly used in the logistics literature while supplementary service is used in the service management literature. Although value-added services can offer obvious advantages in form of customer lock-in and improved competitive advantage, such services are still offered at a low level and there is much space for development.

The purpose of this thesis is to analyse how TPL firms develop value-added services and to investigate what the driving forces and barriers for developing and providing such services are. In the frame of reference, literature within service management, outsourcing, third-party logistics, value-added services, innovation and learning have been used.

In the thesis, an inductive research approach is used and qualitative study has been carried out by applying multiple case studies as a research strategy. The empirical material is gathered from three TPL providers: Bring Logistics Solutions, Aditro Logistics and Schenker Logistics. Data was collected through several interviews conducted at the three target companies and the findings have been analysed using the existing theory stated in the frame of reference.

The main conclusions from analysing the development process of value-added services are that this process in most cases is initiated by customer request and that development of value-added service can occur both in the beginning or during an ongoing relationship, though a lack of information about a customer’s business in the beginning of the relationship can hinder the TPL provider to develop value-added services. Apart from the TPL provider and the customer, firms such as IT companies, transport suppliers and other companies can be involved in the development process. No formal innovation process is applied for developing value-added services. The main driving force behind value-added services is meeting customer demands. Lack of proactiveness from the TPL provider’s side can be a barrier for developing value-added services, as well as problems with achieving successful organizational learning. The difficulty for the TPL firm to coordinate offering so many different services can be also seen as a barrier.

Andersson, Helen, and Karolina Franzén. "Value Added Tax : the Right to Deduct in Case of Carousel Fraud." Thesis, Jönköping University, JIBS, Commercial Law, 2008. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hj:diva-1064.

Full text
Abstract:

Taxable persons’ right to deduct input VAT is an integral part of the VAT system and may in principle not be limited. Carousel schemes deprive the Member States a great deal of tax revenue, investigations show that up to EUR 100 billion disap-pear every year. In order to stop these trading arrangements and reduce the big amount of tax revenue which disappears every year, some Member States would like to deny traders involved in carousel frauds the right to deduct the input VAT.

It exist different opinions regarding taxable persons’ ability to deduct input VAT when involved in carousel frauds. The ECJ has given judgements in three interest-ing cases dealing with the right to deduct in case of carousel fraud. In the Optigen case, it was established that taxable persons who do not know or have any reason to believe that they are involved in a carousel fraud cannot be denied the right to deduct the input VAT. In the FTI case, it was concluded that taxable persons in-volved in carousel frauds can be jointly and severally liable to pay the VAT to-gether with the person, actually liable to pay the VAT. A precondition for making a taxable person jointly and severally liable is that the taxable person has to be aware or should have been aware that the transaction made, was involved in such a scheme. If the taxable person did not know or had no reason to suspect this, he cannot be made jointly and severally liable. The ruling in the Kittel case confirms the Optigen judgement as well as concludes that when a taxable person is aware or should have been aware that he is involved in a carousel scheme, he is not enti-tled to deduct the input VAT. If this is the case, it is possible for the tax authori-ties in the different Member States to deny taxable persons this right as well as claim a refund.

These judgements clarify when the national tax authorities can deny a taxable per-son the right to deduct input VAT when the transactions are made in a chain of fraud. However, another problem occurred, it is up to the national courts to de-cide when a taxable person should be aware that he is involved in a carousel fraud. This decision shall be based upon objective factors, no guidelines or any other help as to what these objective factors should consist of have been published. This creates an interpretation gap for the national courts followed by the risk of having an outcome with different interpretations from the courts in the Member States.

Abstract:
The main purpose of this thesis is to showcase and describe the effect ofvalue added service on customer retention. The investigation has been donethrough a qualitative study which is based on a semi structured interview of10 managers and by analyzing previous theories. A conceptual structuralmodel is used to analyze the concept as a logical reasoning to bridge of thevalue-added services with the customer retention. This study explores thesignificance of value-added services and provides a better opportunity tounderstand the antecedence and aftermath of these factors on the customer’smind. In order to keep up with the dynamic and service oriented telecomindustry new strategy and policies are necessity to hold the leading position.According to authors there are six factors of value-added service which leadsto customer retention. The factors are customer satisfaction, loyalty, servicequality, innovation, new service and offerings, and advertising andpromotion. All the six influencing factors are being analyzed here. Customerretention is a very complex concept by itself, which becomes more complexwhen there is intense competition in market. To stay in the battle fieldcompanies have to come up with new innovative service and offeringsaccording to customer demand. In this era of digitalization value addedservice is able to create a positive effect on customer retention.

Abstract:
Value-added trout burgers and trout wontons were prepared from minced trout trimmings, oats, dried onion flakes, white pepper, cayenne pepper, garlic powder, soy sauce, spice mix and eggs. The trout burgers were coated with crushed cornflakes and then partially cooked (2 min at 140ºC) or frilly cooked (5 min at 140ºC) in hot oil. Similar fillings were used to prepare trout wontons by wrapping the mixture with Chinese wonton dough and 2 products were made: raw wonton (uncooked) and fried wonton (fried for 8 min at 140ºC).
Storage trials were performed on raw and fried trout wontons (a w 0.98--0.95, pH 6.5), and partially and fully cooked trout burgers (aw 0.97--0.96, pH 6.4). Products were packaged in air and under various modified atmospheres (MAP), and stored at 4 and 12ºC. A microbiological shelf-life of >28 days was possible for the cooked trout burgers and fried wontons stored at 4ºC. In general, the microbiological shelf-life preceded the sensory shelf-life.
Subsequent challenge studies were done to address the safety concerns associated with MAP food. All products were inoculated with 102 CFU/g of Listeria monocytogenes and 102 spores/g of Clostridium botulinum type E spores. Gas packaging with 80% CO2 (balance N2) inhibited the growth of L. monocytogenes in products stored at 4ºC. However, counts of L. monocytogenes increased in all other packaging conditions. In challenge studies with C. botulinum type E, toxin was not detected in any products after 28--60 days.

Abstract:
Title: CSR and profitability in three dimensions – practical examples, Economic Value Added and previous research Authors: Linda-Marie Emilsson & Martina Classon Subject: Business Administration Date: 2011-05-26 Mentor: Krister Bredmar Problem description: Scientists have for a very long time disagreed about whether or not companies should work with Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and if there is any correlation between CSR and profitability. There are mainly three different views according the correlation: CSR have a neutral impact on financial performance, CSR have a positive impact on profitability and CSR have a negative impact on profitability. One of the reasons behind the disagreement is the complexity measuring CSR. Scientist claims that EVA is a measure that can be used to measure the correlation between CSR and profitability.         Purpose: The intention with our essay is to find out if there is any correlation between CSR and profitability. Another intention with our paper is to find out what kind of potential competitive advantages CSR is creating for a company. Method: To achieve the intention the study is based on an inductive approach and a combination of qualitative and quantitative strategies. The empirical data consists of interviews with our respondents and the calculation of the selected companies EVA-value from historical financial statements.   Conclusions: The calculation of Economic Value Added shows a low positive correlation between profitability and CSR. But previous research and the practical examples from the selected companies shows a strong positive correlation between CSR and profitability. The three dimensions together shows that CSR creates value and positively affect the financial performance, due to that we claim a positive correlation between CSR and profitability. CSR is also creating competitive advantages for companies by improving reputation and image, attracting workers, keeping and attracting new customers and also by reducing costs due to eco-efficiency.

Abstract:
Companies all over the world attempt to create value for their owners. This is done by delivering profits over an extended period of time. South Africa is no different and has become a major emerging economy. The South African financial system has been much acclaimed in the international arena as one of the best in the world, second only to Canada. Therefore it is very important for banks in particular to ensure the ability to create shareholder value. If the goal of a company is to create value then the company needs measures to track performance. Traditional accounting measures have been used for a long time to indicate how much profit has been made in the financial period. These measures have been used in businesses around the world since the early 1900’s. Since the 1980’s however more and more concerns have been raised over these measures. One of the main issues seen with traditional accounting performance measures is that they do not take into consideration the cost of investment. Value-based management (VBM) was proposed to fill this gap of taking into consideration the cost of capital invested. VBM in theory involves two steps. A company first has to adopt an economic profit metric as a key measurement of performance, and secondly tie this measure to executive compensation. VBM metrics such as Economic Value Added (EVA), Economic Profit (EP) and Cash-flow Return on Investment (CFROI) have gained popularity since the late 1980’s. Managing for value has become of utmost importance for most executives around the world. The main goal of this study was to test what factors can be used to indicate how much value has been created in South African banks. In order to do this a quantitative study was performed on the banks listed in the McGregor BFA database. Regression models were run on the data for these banks over the period 2001 to 2010 to see the impact of specified metrics on value creation. The measures selected for value creation were the growth in Economic Value Added (EVA), the growth in Shareholder Value Analysis (SVA) and EVA/Invested Capital. The independent variables selected were Return on Equity (ROE), growth in assets, the impairment ratio and the growth in operating income per employee. Added to this was a dummy variable which indicated whether the bank outperformed the bank index (the proxy for industry performance) in the particular year. And finally an autoregressive term was added because of the nature of the data being a time series. The results clearly indicate that the chosen metrics works for half of the banks and fails for the other half. It was also found that the growth in EVA performed best as indicator for value creation. The independent variables which were most consistent were ROE, the impairment ratio and the growth in operating income per employee. The fact that the bank had outperformed the bank index was inconsistent, being significant in some cases but not always. The results indicate that value creation is dependent on the particular bank that is considered. When using the results care should be given to which bank is being analysed. Further studies can be performed using even more measures for the different banks. It is therefore recommended that each company find what is working for them, in particular, when searching for a value creation measure.

Abstract:
The competition in the telephony sector has become harder in the last years, leading to a decrease in the average revenue per user of the companies. The value added services have been developing an important role in the effort of revenue increase by the companies with its users. Media has been adopted as a marketing tool by its executives to promote the usage of some services and, consequently, improve the average revenue per user. In this scenario, this study evaluates the media relevance to the performance of value added services. To conclude that, some statistical analysis were conducted in the effort to identify correlation between media volume and traffic of some value added services. A bibliographic revision was made in disciplines of marketing services, media and applied statistics. A case study was conducted aiming a better understanding of the service´s business context, as it is fundamental to a more consistent answer of the research problem. The results present the relevance of media and other aspects that are also important to the service performance, such as the products use characteristics and the business model adopted among the service providers and the media company.

Abstract:
Course: Master thesis in Business Administration and Economics, Major of Logistic, 30 hp, 4FE19E, VT17 Authors: Daniella Pavkovic & Alexandra Valhed Supervisor: Hana Hulthén Examiner: Helena Forslund Title: How to eliminate non-value added activities within eGrocery - a case study at a global grocery supplier Background: An increase in eGrocery usage has occurred due to a more stressful every day living with busy schedules and the desire to save time (Emec, Catay and Bozkaya 2015). Companies are getting involved with eGrocery primary to strengthening the consumer loyalty (Saskia, Marei and Blanquart 2016). Jaca et al., (2012) claim that well-functioning processes within eGrocery will contribute to economic development of the company which in turn can lead to higher level of consumer satisfaction, higher return on investments and a greater efficiency in processes. However, in order to enable improvements of a process and increase the efficiency, non-value added activities need to be eliminated (Librelato et al., 2013). Purpose: The purpose of the thesis is to propose a framework for elimiating non-value added activities related to information sharing in the eGrocery order fulfilment process. Method: The study has a qualitative approach and, in order to answer the purpose of the study, the authors have performed a case study at a global grocery supplier. Empirical data has been collected through focus groups and interviews. Conclusion: An amount of 81 % of the activities within the order fulfilment process towards Shopr are considered to be non-value added. These were identified by a creation of a Value Stream Mapping. The non-value added activities depend primary on manual handling of the operations and insufficient information sharing within the own company as well as between the global grocery supplier and Shopr. In order to eliminate these non-value added activities a Future State Map should be created. Furthermore, focus should be on elimination of the silos within the company and integration of an integrated information system. This applies for the global grocery supplier as well as other global companies involved with eGrocery. Abstract:

The purpose of this master’s thesis is to examine the process of creating values in a purchasing organisation; meaning in which areas created values can be added and what affects the possibility to do so. In addition, the study looks into what can be improved to further enlarge the business spectrum. Through these outlines, a survey has been made to investigate the view on created values from a purchaser, management and supplier perspective. This gives several aspects of within which areas you can work with added values. The study is based on a questionnaire to 60 purchasers at Scania CV AB. The thesis demonstrates that to a certain extent sourcing managers already work with increasing the business spectrum by adding values. But even though Scania is a company with a mature purchasing organisation there are still several areas where the work with created values can be improved, for example within process development and administration.

We structure a literature review which we provide with broader definitions of the majorconcepts: value creation, cost efficiency (leadership), competitive strategies, financialperformance and statement analysis. The literature review focuses mainly on Hong Kongcontext and literatures supporting the similar business strategies among similar size ofcompanies from various industries. The study takes forms as a quantitative study with a deductive approach. A set offinancial performance data will be collected and examined, to show how companyperformance is correlated to its strategies and what an outcome is. We aim at providinganother perspective of investment analysis approach to the potential investors, so theycould embrace the whole picture of available information. We develop two groups of hypothesis; the first group is company’s strategy measures thatshow no effect on financial performance, the second group is company’s strategymeasures that show some effect on financial performance. The result indicates while normally staff cost and cost of sale are recognized as costleadership measure under product industry, it implies positive contribution to valuecreation financial performance in service industry, instead of having influence onprofitability. Also, the wealth generated from previous sale revenue margin will havepositive impact on company’s competiveness in the hotel industry. Keywords: value creation cost leadership, competitive strategies, financial performanceand statement analysis

Jordaan, Daniel Du Plessis Scheepers. "Agribusiness value-chain risk, fragility and coordination strategies : case studies of South African value chains." Thesis, University of Pretoria, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/63308.

Full text
Abstract:
Accelerating volatility, complexity and scrutiny will be the norm in the landscape for agribusiness value chains as the future unfolds. Evidence of this new landscape is clear from the extent and intricacy of global food and fibre value chains, the rise of consumerism, and the prominence of the sustainability and responsibility narrative. As a result, agribusinesses and their value chains are compelled to evolve to meet the challenges and opportunities that this new landscape presents. However, agribusinesses and their value chains generally seem lethargic to adapt to this new environment and are consequently every so often ensnared by a cascade of effects that highlight the volatile, complex and scrutinising challenges for these value chains. Confirmation of these cascading effects is evident from the range of food scandals, product recalls, instantaneous bankruptcies, and reputation and brand devastation, where unexpected events lead to these, and other, non-linear payoffs that ripple through these chains. The conspicuous occurrence of these events with non-linear impacts is indicative of fragility in these chains and specifically highlights the rationale for detailed exploration of fragility, as a phenomenon, in agribusiness value chains. This thesis addresses this overlooked phenomenon by threshing out the factors that cause fragility, by developing a framework to quantify fragility, and finally by exploring the interaction between fragility and the coordination of agribusiness value chains. Through a normative Delphi approach with key stakeholders and a principal component analysis, this thesis explored the factors that contribute to agribusiness value chain fragility in selected meat, fibre and fruit chains and found that those factors that contribute to the efficiency of value chains are also the factors that drive the fragility of these chains. This finding exposed a juxtaposition between value chain efficiency and fragility and the need to find a measured balance between these approaches to achieve and sustain chain goals. The thesis develops a framework to measure agribusiness value chain fragility and applies this framework to the South African lamb value chain through a modified value chain analysis methodology. This framework exhibits the detection and quantification of fragility at the factor, stakeholder and chain level in the particular chain. The thesis finds a golden thread of specific factors that are critical to the fragility of the particular chain. The whole chain of actors is fragile to the actual quality and safety performance and the cash flow position of actors in the chain. Likewise, the thesis also finds nuances in specific factors that are critical to the fragility of the particular actors in the chain due to the activities’ unique techno-economic characteristics. Producers are uniquely fragile to buyer and operational reliability, abattoirs to the quality and training of human resources, and the quality and adequacy of infrastructure, packers to regulations and supplier reliability, and retailers to the management information and supplier relationship and alignment. The idiosyncrasy is that activity-specific fragilities could, unpredictably, cascade into the rest of the chain due to sequential interdependencies in a typical chain. Quantification of the fragility of the South African lamb chain also establishes that increasing coordination intensity and interdependency in the chain increase the fragility of the chain. Hence the thesis argues that traditional transaction costs economising model that guides the coordination strategies of successive exchanges in value chains may, in fact, contribute to chain fragility in the effort to economise on the costs of exchange. Conscious of the findings of the analyses the thesis argues that complex systems like value chains are unavoidably exposed to human limitations in their design and management. Humanity appears challenged in coping with complexity, and as a result, the coordination of value chains oscillates between hubris and nemesis in pursuit of coordination precision – sailing too close to the wind and then crying foul when the inevitable happens. Therefore, the thesis makes a case for a more mindful and less ‘fragilising’ approach to the coordination of value chains by arguing that both fragility and the cost of exchange be considered in the governance of chains. The shortcoming of the traditional approach is laid bare by the growing frequency and impact of events with cascading consequences that ripple through chains. Hence the thesis’ argument is contrary to the traditional transaction costs economising model that only considers economising on the costs of exchange, at all cost, in the coordination of value chains.

Abstract:

Governments are coming under increasing pressure to augment their revenues to offset the social costs of globalization and ever-widening trade and capital liberalization. Unarguably, the most sustainable way to procure additional resources is taxation. In this context, one of the main challenges for developing countries is how to bring the informal sector into the tax net. Influential institutions such as the World Bank and the IMF see the VAT as the solution. In Colombia, a weak social contract makes citizens perceive taxes as burdens with a marginal contribution to the common good. Consequently, evasion is widespread. This thesis attempts to understand why some small firms evade the VAT and others do not. It revolves around the supply chain for small parts for buses of the informal transportation systems of Colombian cities. This sector slowly evolves-under growing liberalization and top-down formalization of urban transportation-towards higher formality (all firms are now registered and firm owners hold legal titles of their property and machinery). They are informal in that they have varying degrees of compliance with State regulations (most notably tax and labor). Thus, most firms in this study fall somewhere on the continuum between informality and formality.
(cont.) In the dynamic context of the sector studied, both external and internal factors determine a firm's decision to comply. External actors relevant to a firm's compliance with the VAT include the tax administration agency, clients and suppliers. Internal processes that influence a firm's decision to comply include moral principles (ethics) and customs of firm owners, management changes, and business upgrading. The main findings are: First, differing from the common argument that high costs of compliance keep firms informal, partial non-compliance is more expensive and complex than compliance in the sector studied. Second, contrary to what several authors assume, formality is a prerequisite and not a consequence of growth. Furthermore, partial non-compliance can keep small firms from growing. In that sense, policies aimed at promoting tax compliance among small firms in order to increase tax revenue can have positive effects on economic growth.

De, Vries Herbert. "The influence of lean thinking on discrete manufacturing organisational structure and behavior." Thesis, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/19589.

Full text
Abstract:
In following a lean transformation specifically for discrete manufacturing, how and why will the organisational structure be affected? How will the employees deal with this profound change? Lean theory and literature propose that organisations should be restructured according to the value stream of the organisation; what does this imply and how can it be accomplished? The purpose of this study was to determine, from a new perspective, guidelines and theory that could indicate how and why organisational structures and behaviours might change with lean transformation. Two discrete manufacturing organisations in South Africa were purposively sampled for this purpose. A conceptual framework was used at the outset that indicated constructs for the independent lean variables and the dependent organisational structure and behaviour variables. Using a mixed methodology case study and quantitative multiple linear regression approach, hypotheses and propositions for the research were developed. Multiple linear regression was used to test the hypotheses, and case study methodology was applied to analyse and test the qualitative data. Findings confirmed the hypotheses and propositions that a flat structure consisting of business units that support manufacturing cells achieves effective lean transformations in discrete manufacturing organisations. The research revealed the components of an effective lean structure as open constructive leadership, an effective lean champions unit and business units that support linked manufacturing cells. These are led by cell leaders who cultivate supportive behaviours through cross-functional teamwork and through self-directed work teams who run manufacturing cells or flow support functions.

Aksornsri, Weeraporn. "Evaluating a value-added product through studies on consumer acceptability, sensory properties, and their correlations to biochemical and instrumental texture properties : the case of Pacific whiting (Merluccius productus) individually quick frozen (IQF) fillets." Thesis, 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/1957/28166.

Full text
Abstract:
Pacific whiting (Merluccius productus) is the most abundant groundfish species off the California, Oregon and Washington Coasts. The fish are mainly used as a raw material for the production of surimi. However, it is not economically wise to depend only on one product. There is a need to diversify the industry and develop a portfolio of product forms able to compete on the global marketplace. This study examines the characteristics of Pacific whiting individually quick frozen (IQF) fillets through an evaluation of consumer acceptability and sensory analysis, as well as their correlations to biochemical and physical properties. Additionally, a comparison is made between Pacific whiting IQF fillets and characteristics from seven other fish species. Sensory analysis by a trained panel showed Pacific whiting scoring highest in the flavor category of shellfish, medium in overall flavor intensity and fresh fish flavor, and high in moistness. Two different cooking methods: microwave (rapid) and conventional oven (slow) were studied with the results showing that the rapid method improved a number of texture attributes. Correlations between sensory texture attributes and instrumental texture results of Pacific whiting and the protease activity were found for both cooking methods but much higher in the slow one. All eight species were tested in a consumer test using a nine-point Hedonic scale. There were no significance differences (p>0.05) in flavor, texture, and overall acceptance of Pacific whiting with most of other commercial fish. However, the amount of variation in each group was high. No significant differences were found in firmness of Pacific whiting when compared to Dover sole. Five-point purchase intent scale showed no differences in consumers' willingness-to-buy when compared to species presently available in the marketplace. Pacific whiting IQF fillets, kept in frozen storage for 12 months, showed no differences in the flavor and texture attributes with fillets frozen for one month. The following findings are based on the information gained from the focus group: (1) The most important factor affecting consumers' purchasing decision on fish is flavor, (2) Fish flavor must be fresh, mild, pleasant, and true to species, and (3) Fish texture is varied. Texture is not as important as such factors as flavor, odor, appearance, and thickness of fillets. Pacific whiting was found to be tasty and acceptable to the focus group participants. Qualitative and quantitative data collected from the focus group and the consumer tests, combined with its sensory characteristics' similarity to desirable commercial fish suggest a good potential of Pacific whiting in being utilized as IQF fillets.

Abstract:
This study investigated the critical success factors that affect the effectiveness and efficiency of mergers and acquisitions, by soliciting responses from bank Chief Executives and case evidence from the South African banking industry for the period 1990 to 2015. The study applied a mixed-use methodology. The case study evidence was drawn from the formation of the “Big Four Banks” in South Africa, namely, Absa (“Barclays Africa Group”), First Rand Group, Nedbank Group and Standard Bank Group. The study found that when visions and values of merging banks were aligned, there was a greater chance of success. The study further found that culture compatibility of merging entities is paramount. Stakeholder acceptance was also found to have a strong impact on the chance of success or failure in mergers and acquisitions (M&A). The case evidence corroborated and substantiated that there was a positive Deal Value Added (DVA) trend before the merger activity and immediately thereafter, evidenced by positive share price appreciation resulting in increased market capitalisation. The quantitative results found that 56% of the sampled CEOs indicated that an 80% majority of bank mergers in the South African banking sector had created value over the long term, evidenced by 10-year return trends. This study contributes to the corpus of knowledge by generating an integrated assessment framework that can be applied even beyond the South African environment, by practitioners involved in mergers and acquisition activities.

The increasing globalization of the world economy calls for new methods to measure trade data. Traditional trade statistics only measures the gross output, which does not provide a clear picture as it does not include a separate measure of intermediate inputs and value added. It also not makes sure to calculate the final value contribution of individual country’s or industry’s export goods or services. This paper proposes a method of measurement that more accurately reflects the value added by each country in the production process of different goods, and the final value contribution of individual country’s or industry’s export goods or services trade in value added method can calculate how much value added comes from other countries. Using input output analysis based on the World Input-Output Database, this paper estimates the trade in value and value added in trade of Taiwan, Japan, Korea, and China. This paper also uses index decomposition analysis to identify the main drivers of value added, discussion which factors let value added change. Among three factors: total volume (activities effect), composition (structural effect) and value added intensity (intensity effect) of the traded goods.

Telecom market was opened due to the demand of Taiwan’s joint WTO and Mobile operator became a “new star” business then. The first private-owned telecom operator launched service in 1997, then, mobile phone penetration rate grew up rapidly from 6% of 1997 to more than 100% of 2003. Taiwan’s mobile phone penetration rate has ranked No.1 in the world; meanwhile, mobile operators in Taiwan also faced the challenge of the coming new telecom era-mobile value added service. Mobile value added service was introduced to Taiwan market 5 years ago and it became the theme of competition within these two years. Most of the papers were focused on the entire telecom competing strategy, very few of them were involved the study of value added service. The study, therefore, tries to adopt case study to analyze the difference of key players in the market and hope to provide recommendation to those players in mobile telecom market. Following are the major discoveries: A. The marketing strategy and key elements of value added service of those key players are too similar to cause the competitive advantage B. Players are eager to win in launch timing and therefore, lack of solid marketing survey and study. C. Players need to enhance the conception and operation for service marketing because most of the marketing operation were still based on traditional 4P D. When there is no difference in either products or strategy, successful and complete execution will lead to the final succeed.

Globalization made China the world’s largest recipient of FDI. Investments poured in from all different countries; among them, Taiwan still came out in front. With “push” from insider (economic structural adjustment) and “pull” from outside (China’ preferential policies), nowadays, there are about 68,000 Taiwanese corporations or a half million businessmen doing business in the mainland. Since tax exemption is a central element in China’s preferential policies, it’s tax regime and reform measures are undoubtedly among the overriding concerns of those Taiwanese investors. Regarding China’s taxation system, the value-added tax (VAT) is one of the building blocks of the regime and thereby one of the main sources of government revenue. The regulations for VAT, such as “Value-Added Tax Provisional Statute” and “Value-Added Tax Provisional Statute Enforcement Regulation,” however, have long been criticized for being largely out-of-date: they have not ever been revised since 1993. Although a major revision is the consensus, no one is quite sure about how to adjust these regulations. The author of this study thus seeks to find whether and how China’s VAT tax system would be restructured in response to the challenges and opportunities of economic globalization. Combing documentary analyses, comparative studies and questionnaire interviewing on policy specialists and tax practitioners, the author reach following conclusions. First, China’s VAT tax would be gradually transformed from production-type to consumption-type VAT. Second, the tax base of VAT would also be broadened to provide a competitive investing environment for foreign and domestic businesses. Third, The tax rate of VAT would be reduced to lighten the tax burden on enterprises. Forth, tax-refund for exported goods would be restructured to simplify administrative procedures and reduce compliance costs. Fifth, the invoice system would be greatly improved so as to obstruct rampant tax frauds. Finally, tax administration would also be improved to match international standards. In sum, China’s VAT system would be significantly reformed following here pace entering the global economy.

The global financial tsunami happened since 2008, economic is slowdown and bank deposit rates have remained at low. In order to increase revenue and provide investors diversification of financial products, The products of Dual Currency Contract labeled as through financial engineering technology has already attracted many investor’s favor. This article focuses on analysis and discussion of case example for the Australian dollar against the U.S. dollar of value-added Dual Currency Contract. Therefore, we make the analysis and comparison observed under BSGK Model by the difference of volatility、the spot exchange rate、Australian dollar and U.S dollar risk-free interest rate、exercise price、the delta hedge ratio and the different contract period to decide the optimum income rate, exercise price and contract period of options. Then we also verify the probability of the Pricing Currency, deposit currency (USD) will not be converted to a weak currency(AUD), by Monte Carlo simulation. The conclusion is: 一、The higher implied volatility, the higher will be the income rate, and volatility on the theoretical income rate is significant. 二、With no change of volatility and contract period, for put options, the lower spot exchange rate, the higher will be the income rate;In the contrary, the higher spot exchange rate, the lower will be the income rate. 三、The changes of two currency risk-free interest rate, resulting in changes of income rate is not high. But when the interest rate of depository currency (USD) go up, banks give the income rate will be descending; when interest rate of the relative currency (AUD) go up, banks give the income rate will be increase. 四、If options is “Out-the-Money” begin, options have more values when expiration date is more far. 五、By the verification of Monte Carlo simulation ,the exercise rate of options is Out-the-Money and volatility is lower, the income rate will be lower, but the success’s probability( the deposit currency will not be converted to a weak currency) is more higher; and at the same of volatility, the exercise rate is more lower, the success’s probability is more higher. From this study can be found, investors invest the Dual Currency Contract, the most difficult is how to judge the exchange rate and the volatility in the future; The success of the investment options, the most important thing is still analysis capabilities and determine of the future trend of the exchange rate.

ABSTRACT A new performance index, Economic Value Added (EVA), has gradually gained its importance in recent years. Many well known international corporations such as Coca-Cola、CSA, etc have adopted EVA as the index to evaluate operation and investment strategies. EVA is a value based management model proposed by Stern Stewart & Co. in 1991. It not only serves as a way to evaluation performance, but also provides a complete analytical framework for financial management and promotion scheme for employees. In this paper, Hua Nan Bank is examined to study weather its EVA is more correlated with Market Value Added (MVA) than traditional performance evaluation indices. This then will be the guideline for the management team of the bank to form operational strategies. The conclusion of the study for Hua Nan Bank has indicated that, its EVA and MVA are highly correlated. It means that MVA can be successfully raised through the rise of EVA. Moreover, the ability for traditional performance evaluation indices such as RI, ROA, EPS, ROE to explain MVA has escalated with the involvement of EVA. It then can be concluded that EVA is more precise than traditional performance evaluation indices in evaluating the operation performance for Hua Nan Bank. Hua Nan Bank should treat EVA as the base to construct value-based management system (VBMS). It should also replace traditional performance evaluation indices with EVA in terms of accounting practice. It then can help to provide a more complete framework to solve the common problems for bank industry such as performance evaluation, risk management, transfer pricing, allocation of capital, rate of return on customer relationship, improvement on information disclosure and dividends for employees. This is to effectively increase the stock price as well as the wealth of shareholders, and to reach the ultimate goal of all companies, which is to maximize the owner’s equity.
