Abstract:
The purpose of this research is to take a closer look at the tourism experience, with special reference to the experience of historic areas. The basis for the research is an urban design model based on three elements of urban spaces, namely form, activity and meaning. The model is often used and discussed in urban design literature to explain sense of place and also to explain how urban spaces can be made more interesting and enjoyable. The form-activity-meaning model refers primarily to the intrinsic qualities of the urban space. This thesis contends that the urban design model is useful but inadequate for a proper understanding of the tourist experience of urban spaces and urban areas. For a better understanding, it is considered useful to develop a model variant whereby the tourist, and not the urban space, is the focus. The variant, referred to as the tourist interaction model, is a representation of the tourist experience of historic areas. The variant refers to interactions of the tourist with different aspects or elements of the space. The model speaks of interaction of the tourist with self, an interaction that primarily results from the meaning that is associated with a place. The model also refers to interactions with others; interactions that are mostly non-verbal. The third element of the model is interaction with the surroundings. This involves using the senses, especially vision, to engage with buildings, sites and artefacts. This research uses Valletta as a case study because it is a city that is characterised by numerous and diverse urban spaces and also because it contains significant tourism activity. A qualitative methodology based on face-to-face interviews was deemed the most appropriate to attain the research aims. A total of 32 interviews with tourists were conducted. The objective of the interview was to obtain the essence of the experience including feelings and emotions. The research findings provide useful insights on the tourist experience. No two tourist experiences are the same. There are countless factors that make each experience of a historic area unique. Even if each experience is unique, there are elements that are common to the experiences of some, or even most, tourists. The research findings suggest that the commonplace and mundane in the urban landscape are an important component of the tourist experience of historic areas. Frequently, the visual element becomes relevant to the tourist experience when it combines with the meaning of a building or site. On Valletta’s stepped streets, watching one’s step, while looking at the surroundings, engages the tourist and creates an element of interactivity. Even if the exertion is greater, this enhances the experience and makes it more enjoyable. The tourist explores and in exploring there is discovery of things which are new or unfamiliar. In some instances, there is also surprise. Where the surprise is more significant, a more intense and enjoyable experience will result. Issues relating to self and identity of the tourist have a significant role in tourist motivation and behaviour and hence also on the tourist’s experience. Compared to a repeat visitor, the experience of first-time tourists is more likely to involve emotion and feelings than that of a repeat visitor, because the novelty of exploration and discovery of a first time visit is stronger. On the other hand, repeat tourists are more able to satisfy the need of affiliation by befriending local people. The research also suggests that the boundaries that have traditionally separated ‘tourists’ from ‘locals’ are becoming more blurred as residents consume the city in ways that are similar to tourists. This research notes the relevance of ‘layers of experience’ to the tourist experience. ‘Layers of experience’ signify that the area offers many different ways how the tourist can engage with it. With more layers of experience offered, the tourist will have more possibility of interaction with self/meaning, with others and with surroundings, and hence the tourist’s expectations are more likely to be met. It is suggested that Valletta is enjoyable to most tourists because it offers many layers of experience.

Abstract:
Based on ethnographic research in St Paul's parish, Valletta, Malta, this thesis examines the festa ('feast') of St. Paul's Shipwreck. St Paul is both the local patron saint and the national patron; his festa is therefore also both the local and national. This thesis investigates the relationship between local, national and personal identities in the administration and performance of the festa. It contributes to current arguments in social anthropology concerning the nature of public rituals in Mediterranean Europe, and their significance in the construction of social identities. Where others have seen the primary function of such rituals as being the expression of local identity in the face of modernity and globalisation, it is argued here that as a ritual of identify, festa is more potent than that. Festa does serve as a symbolic representation of local identity, but in doing so, it also serves as a means of elaborating other types of identity, based on gender, political party allegiance, social class and nation. In Maltese society, these identities are hotly contested, because of the rapid social changes that have affected the country since its independence from colonial rule in 1964. Anxiety about the future leads to antagonism between different social groups in the parish, over how to define these identities. The festa involves a fleeting moment of symbolic resolution that ties together these otherwise antagonistic groups. But the activities that surround it are also the primary media for the communication of this antagonism. Festa is therefore simultaneously an expression of solidarity, and a vehicle for the expression of conflict. It differs from other public rituals in that the symbols it invokes - of family, community, religion and gender - are fundamental to Maltese conceptions of self-identity. This is the key to its effectiveness.

Devant le succes grandissant de disneyland, puis le disney world en floride en 1971, et plus particulierement au regard de la formidable reussite au japon du premier parc disney implante a l'etranger (en 1983), les reponsables de disney ont pris la decision de se lancer a la conquete du vieux continent avec le projet "euro disney resort". Ce projet de centre de divertissement en europe, a ete la grande priorite de la decennie pour walt disney company. Parallelement, en france, le contexte economique tendu, ayant besoin d'une locomotive creatrice de plusieurs milliers d'emplois, a incite les pouvoirs publics a soutenir ce projet sur le plan moral et financier. Ce nouveau centre de loisirs avec l'ensemble du developpement immobilier qui lui est associe est construit a marne-la-vallee a 32 kms a l'est du centre de paris. Euro disney est situe sur un site de 1 943 ha, un des plus importants terrains disponibles d'un seul tenant, a proximite d'une capitale majeure d'europe de l'ouest pour un developpement prive et constitue aujourd'hui le plus important projet de parc a themes et de loisirs en europe. Il est envisage que le projet soit developpe en plusieurs etapes entre 1992 et 2017 et que son element central sera le parc a themes euro disneyland (magic kingdom) dont l'ouverture a eu lieu en avril 1992
Euro disney land, the latest disney theme park in the world, is located 32 kms east of paris at thre new city of marne-la-vallee, it features five magic lands of adventure, six magnificent resort hotels with 5 200 guest rooms, the festival disney night time entairtenment center, convention ficilities, golf, tennis and woodland campground. Providing easy access to the complex are fast public transportation from all parts of the paris region by newly extend rer railway service with the new terminus located at the entrance of the theme park. Additionally, there is a new tgv station located at the theme park to provide easy access for travellers from all over europe. Thus when the train doors open at rer tgv station across fantasie gardens from the disneyland hotel, guests begin their adventure either on foot or on shuttles to tthe resort hotels, campground and golf course. The theme park is also in close proximity to both orly and charles de gaulle international airports with convenient shuttle services to the site. In addition to providing attractions and amusements for every age group, euro disneyland has been monumental in providing the country with 15 000 new jobs. This is only a fraction of what is estimated as only phase i of the total project has been completed. At the completion of the whole project in the year 2017, there will be an estimated 65 000 new jobs

Abstract:
Congestion is a phenomenon that is becoming an increasing problem on road networks in and around many urban areas. As congestion causes a number of environmental, economic and social problems, policy and decision makers have started to consider a number of measures to tackle it. A number of cities have therefore implemented congestion charging systems, with one of the most recent being Valletta, Malta, in May 2007. Despite being part of a number of initiatives in attempting to curb Malta’s considerable congestion problems, there are indicators that the Valletta Controlled Vehicular Access system has not been as successful as originally envisaged in reaching its objectives. This thesis therefore analyses the Valletta CVA system, and other proposed and implemented congestion charging systems around Europe, to discern the common factors of successful and unsuccessful congestion charging systems and their implications for transport policy. This therefore enables the construction of a practical framework for the implementation and operation of a successful congestion charging system in the Maltese context.

Ce travail porte sur l'evolution, dans la longue duree, des communautes indiennes d'une vallee des hauts-plateaux centraux mexicains. La these est divisee en quatre parties. La premiere traite de la periode prehispanique, de l'evolution des seigneuries matlatzincas et des transformations survenues avant la conquete espagnole : les aspects geographiques, politiques, economiques et sociaux y sont analyses. La seconde partie presente les principaux aspects de la reorganisation de la region dans le cadre du regime colonial : les transformations politiques -evincement des lignages caciques, division de l'espace regional entre hernan cortes, les descendants de l'empereur moctezuma et la couronne d'espagne-, administratives -introduction des encomenderos et des corregidors-, spatiales -delimitation des finages et des reductions indigenes- et foncieres -uniformisation des proprietes indigenes. La troisieme partie, de nature thematique, presente, d'une part la dynamique demographique de la societe entre 1560 et 1810, tout comme l'evolution des rivalites entre communautes indiennes et colons non indiens, rivalites renforcees par la legislation coloniale et la reconnaissance progressive de la propriete privee au detriment de la propriete collective. La vallee de toluca trouve la toute son originalite, puisqu'elle a vu naitre un corpus de documents "fabriques" -codex techialoyan et "titres primordiaux"- par les communautes en vue d'obtenir de l'audience des mexico des titres de legitime propriete. Enfin, la quatrieme partie consiste en une approche des mentalites indiennes dans l'optique des formations des confreries et leur impact sur la propriete indigene. Les testaments indiens sont egalement analyses dans cette perspective.

Abstract:
Le segment l de la souche mp12 du virus de la fievre de la vallee du rift (fvr) a ete clone et sequence. Ce segment l a une taille de 6404 nucleotides et code pour une proteine de 237. 49kda dans le sens antigenomique. La sequence primaire de la proteine l a ete analysee et comparee avec des polymerases des autres virus a arn, a genome segmente et non-segmente. La region centrale de la proteine l du virus de la fvr montre les motifs a, b, c et d des polymerases. D'autres motifs conserves dans cette region centrale et en position n-terminale des proteines l des bunya-et arenaviridae, ont pu etre mis en evidence. Par ailleurs, il a ete possible de placer les residus strictement conserves des polymerases des virus a arn sens negatif dans un contexte tridimensionnel et de proposer un modele structural pour les polymerases de ces virus. Ce modele permettra de mieux concevoir des experiences de mutagenese dirigee sur les polymerases des virus a arn de sens negatif. Les bases moleculaires de la virulence ont ete determinees en sequencant et comparant les genomes des souches zh548 (virulente) et mp12 (attenuee) du virus de la fvr. Les deux souches se distinguent par 27 mutations, et leurs influence sur l'attenuation est discutee. Les segments l et s d'une autre souche attenuee (c13) ont egalement ete sequences. L'analyse de ces sequences suggere que les mecanismes d'attenuation des souches mp12 et c13 sont differents. L'etude moleculaire de la souche c13, consideree comme un candidat vaccin vivant contre la fvr, permet de mieux evaluer cette eventuelle utilisation

Abstract:
La vallee du niari (congo) est caracterisee par un gradient pluviometrique croissant du sud vers le nord et un substrat generalement schisto-greseux ou schistocalcaire. Ces caracteristiques ont une influence sur la composition des forets ou on peut distinguer les forets propres a cette vallee sur schisto-greseux et schisto-calcaire et des forets sur gres quartziques et gres argileux au contact des massifs du mayombe et du chaillu. La composition floristique est determinee par le substrat geologique dont l'action est renforcee par le climat. L'etude de la structure au sol au moyen d'indices de dispersion, de l'analyse de variance, des autocorrelogrammes, variogrammes fractogrammes et periodogrammes montre un gradient de densite d'individus de la base vers le sommet des collines et une structure en agregats de faible dimension. Cette structure au sol est regie surtout par le climat. Le lissage des structures en cbh et en hauteur par le modele exponentiel de de liocourt donne des resultats convenables pour la plupart des forets. Le coefficient d'allometrie des relations hauteur/cbh varie de 0,66 a 0,84. La biomasse aerienne moyenne est de l'ordre de 280 t/ha et le volume aerien moyen de l'ordre de 420 t/ha

Abstract:
Fressignes est compose de deux couches du solutreen superieur. Les etudes de sedimentologie et de micromorphologie ont montre que les sediments se sont deposes par colluvionnement. Le cortege mineralogique est d'origine locale. Les couches se sont mises en place lors d'une phase climatique froide. Des traits texturaux d'illuviation post-sedimentaires se sont installes sous un climat d'abord froid puis tempere humide. L'abri fritsch est forme de quatre ensembles stratigraphiques allant du solutreen moyen au badegoulien. Les processus de sedimentation sont d'ordre physique (ruissellement et desquamation de la paroi) mais aussi d'ordre biologique (dejections de rapaces). Les mineraux lourds proviennent des roches du massif central et des formations detritiques de la brenne. Les argiles sont d'origine locale. Les sediments revelent, dans l'ensemble, un climat froid. Cependant, deux episodes climatiques plus clements ont ete enregistres et correspondent aux interstades de laugerie et de lascaux. Ces deux sites appartiennent a des milieux geologiques differents, cependant la presence d'industrie du solutreen superieur et la signification paleoclimatique des depots nous ont permis de les correler. Ainsi, la couche l de fressignes se correle a la partie superieure de la couche e de fritsch ; l'installation des traits texturaux d'illuviation de type fin serait contemporaine de la couche f de fritsch
