The commitment to programmed cell death via apoptosis is largely made upon activation of the proapoptotic mitochondrial proteins Bax or Bak.

Abstract:
We define Leibniz triple systems in a functorial manner using the algorithm of Kolesnikov and Pozhidaev which converts identities for algebras into identities for dialgebras; this algorithm is a concrete realization of the white Manin product introduced by Vallette by the permutad Perm introduced by Chapoton. We verify that Leibniz triple systems are natural analogues of Lie triple systems by showing that both the iterated bracket in a Leibniz algebra and the permuted associator in a Jordan dialgebra satisfy the defining identities for Leibniz triple systems. We construct the universal Leibniz envelopes of Leibniz triple systems and prove that every identity satisfied by the iterated bracket in a Leibniz algebra is a consequence of the defining identities for Leibniz triple systems. In the last section, we present some examples of two-dimensional Leibniz triple systems and their universal Leibniz envelopes.

Abstract:

Badania prowadzono w ramach współpracy Politechniki Krakowskiej z Konsulatem Republiki Malty w Krakowie. Powstały propozycje projektowe współczesnych założeń architektoniczno-urbanistycznych w stolicy Malty uwzględniające wytyczne wynikające z wniosków z przeprowadzonych badań. Propozycje te zostały przedstawione w pracach dyplomowych magisterskich studentów drugiego stopnia kierunku Architektura na Wydziale Architektury Politechniki Krakowskiej. A Multi-Cultural City’s New Spatial Order: Valletta, Malta This paper focuses on diagnosing the socio-spatial problems of Malta as a multi-cultural country. The study was based on defining the needs of the country’s citizens and an analysis of the socio-spatial development of Valletta – as a city representative of Malta. The conclusions of this investigation served as a starting point for an attempt to formulate guidelines for shaping a new spatial order for the city. The study was performed as a part of cooperation between the Cracow University of Technology with the Consulate of the Republic of Malta in Cracow. Design proposals of contemporary architectural and urban complexes in Malta’s capital that included said guidelines were drafted. These proposals were presented in Master’s thesis projects prepared by second-cycle students of the Architecture course taught at the Faculty of Architecture of the Cracow University of Technology.

Abstract:
The National Museum – Czech Museum of Music holds an important source – a bundled collection of three printed sets of lute tablature by Nicolas Vallet, which contains parts I and II of Le Secret des Muses (1615, 1616) and the psalm collection Vingt et un pseaumes de David (1615). In our examination of graphic motifs, we focused on musical motifs worked into the decorating of initials and especially on depictions of the Biblical figure of King David with a lute, of lutenists, and of the lutes themselves. The schematic depictions of the instrument did not provide any new organological discoveries, but instead confirmed the popularity of the lute as a symbol. Vallet’s tablatures were printed from original full-page copper engraving plates and not from individual blocks, as was customary. It is also for this reason that the initials, decorated with genre pictures and Biblical scenes, have merited extraordinary attention.

Ebejer, John. "Tourist experiences of urban historic areas : Valletta as a case study." Thesis, University of Westminster, 2015. https://westminsterresearch.westminster.ac.uk/item/970w8/tourist-experiences-of-urban-historic-areas-valletta-as-a-case-study.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this research is to take a closer look at the tourism experience, with special reference to the experience of historic areas. The basis for the research is an urban design model based on three elements of urban spaces, namely form, activity and meaning. The model is often used and discussed in urban design literature to explain sense of place and also to explain how urban spaces can be made more interesting and enjoyable. The form-activity-meaning model refers primarily to the intrinsic qualities of the urban space. This thesis contends that the urban design model is useful but inadequate for a proper understanding of the tourist experience of urban spaces and urban areas. For a better understanding, it is considered useful to develop a model variant whereby the tourist, and not the urban space, is the focus. The variant, referred to as the tourist interaction model, is a representation of the tourist experience of historic areas. The variant refers to interactions of the tourist with different aspects or elements of the space. The model speaks of interaction of the tourist with self, an interaction that primarily results from the meaning that is associated with a place. The model also refers to interactions with others; interactions that are mostly non-verbal. The third element of the model is interaction with the surroundings. This involves using the senses, especially vision, to engage with buildings, sites and artefacts. This research uses Valletta as a case study because it is a city that is characterised by numerous and diverse urban spaces and also because it contains significant tourism activity. A qualitative methodology based on face-to-face interviews was deemed the most appropriate to attain the research aims. A total of 32 interviews with tourists were conducted. The objective of the interview was to obtain the essence of the experience including feelings and emotions. The research findings provide useful insights on the tourist experience. No two tourist experiences are the same. There are countless factors that make each experience of a historic area unique. Even if each experience is unique, there are elements that are common to the experiences of some, or even most, tourists. The research findings suggest that the commonplace and mundane in the urban landscape are an important component of the tourist experience of historic areas. Frequently, the visual element becomes relevant to the tourist experience when it combines with the meaning of a building or site. On Valletta’s stepped streets, watching one’s step, while looking at the surroundings, engages the tourist and creates an element of interactivity. Even if the exertion is greater, this enhances the experience and makes it more enjoyable. The tourist explores and in exploring there is discovery of things which are new or unfamiliar. In some instances, there is also surprise. Where the surprise is more significant, a more intense and enjoyable experience will result. Issues relating to self and identity of the tourist have a significant role in tourist motivation and behaviour and hence also on the tourist’s experience. Compared to a repeat visitor, the experience of first-time tourists is more likely to involve emotion and feelings than that of a repeat visitor, because the novelty of exploration and discovery of a first time visit is stronger. On the other hand, repeat tourists are more able to satisfy the need of affiliation by befriending local people. The research also suggests that the boundaries that have traditionally separated ‘tourists’ from ‘locals’ are becoming more blurred as residents consume the city in ways that are similar to tourists. This research notes the relevance of ‘layers of experience’ to the tourist experience. ‘Layers of experience’ signify that the area offers many different ways how the tourist can engage with it. With more layers of experience offered, the tourist will have more possibility of interaction with self/meaning, with others and with surroundings, and hence the tourist’s expectations are more likely to be met. It is suggested that Valletta is enjoyable to most tourists because it offers many layers of experience.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This study deals with the Large Eddy Simulation of a 3D unsteady shock wave/boundary layer interaction, in sight of turbomachinery applications. The simulation of a compressible flow through a 3D channel (ONERA) has been performed in LES, with a third order WENO scheme (Jiang, Shu, 1996) and the mixed scale model (Tenaud, Ta Phuoc, 1996). The flow has already been studied experimentally at ONERA (Cahen, 1995), and numerically with RANS modeling (Gerolymos, Vallet, 1997). The unsteady results obtained by LES within and downstream of the 3D interaction are presented and analyzed. The mean velocity profiles in the interaction zone, are then compared to both experiments and statistical numerical results.

Abstract:
The unstable one-dimensional incompressible two-fluid model including a hydrostatic force is reduced to a two equation model in terms of the liquid volume fraction and the liquid velocity. For small density ratios the model may be simplified to a formulation that is equivalent tothe Shallow Water Theory (SWT) equations [Whitham, 1975] with a source term corresponding to the two-fluid model constitutive relations for wall and interfacial shear and to a void gradient term that contains the Kelvin-Helmholtz mechanism. Linear stability of the SWT equations shows that the model is made well-posed stable by the hydrostatic force. However, unlike the SWT equations, the two equation two-fluid model is only conditionally stable. As the gas velocity increases the model becomes unstable once the kinematic instability occurs, i.e., the Viscous Kelvin-Helmholtz (VKH) instability. When the gas velocity is increased further the model becomes dynamically unstable, i.e., it reaches the Inviscid Kelvin-Helmholtz (IKH) instability limit. Beyond the IKH limit the model becomes ill-posed and requires higher order modelling, e.g. surface tension. Simple analytic expressions for the two instabilities are obtained because of the simplified mathematics of the two equation model. Furthermore, the wave “sheltering” effect, which allows more accurate predictions of the flow regime transition, may be easily incorporated into the analysis. The theory is validated with the new HAWAC flow regime map [Vallee et al., 2010]. The two equation two-fluid model is consistent with all previous results of two-fluid model linear stability for stratified flow and, since it is a special case of SWT, it is amenable to non-linear stability analysis and a very broad body of mathematics literature on non-linear kinematic waves, e.g., Whitham (1974) is now directly applicable when the model is not IKH unstable.

Abstract:
Flash boiling is the rapid phase change of a pressurised fluid that emerges in ambient conditions below its vapourpressure. Flashing can occur either inside or outside the nozzle depending on the local pressure and geometry and the bubble formation leads to interfacial interactions that eventually influence the emerging spray. Lagrangian methods which exist in literature to simulate the flash atomisation and inter-phase heat transfer employ many sim- plifying assumptions. Typically, sub-models used for the break-up, collisions and evaporation introduce an extensive empiricism that might result in unrealistic predictions for cases like flashing. In this study, a fully Eulerian approach is selected employing the Σ − Y model proposed by Vallet and Borghi. The model tracks liquid structures of any shape and computes the spray characteristics comprising a modified version for the transport equation of the sur- face density. The main goal of this study is to investigate the performance of this model in flash boiling liquids using the Homogeneous Relaxation Model (HRM) developed by Downar-Zapolski, a model capable of capturing the heat transfer under sudden depressurisation conditions accounting for the non-equilibrium vapour generation. The model in this present study considers that the instantaneous quality would relax to the equilibrium value over a given timescale which is calculated using the flow field values. A segregated approach linking the HRM and Σ − Y is implemented in a compressible formulation in an attempt to quantify the effects of flash boiling in the spray dynamics. The developed model is naturally implemented in RANS in a dedicated solver HRMSonicELSAFoam. Results from simulations of two-phase jets of different subcooled fluids through sharp-edged orifices show that the proposed approach can accurately simulate the primary atomisation and give reliable predictions for the droplet sizes and distribution. Strong effects of the flashing and turbulent mixing on the jet are demonstrated. The model istested for turbulent flows within small nozzles and was developed within the open source code OpenFOAM.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.4995/ILASS2017.2017.4667
