Full textThis thesis analyses how Catalan and Valencian adolescents construct their linguistic and social identities by means of their language usages in three spaces of socialisation: their homes, the classroom and their peer groups. The research combines quantitative and qualitative methods and is based on sociolinguistic questionnaires and group interviews carried out in two Catalan cities, Mataró and Manlleu, and a Valencian one, Castelló de la Plana. From a theoretical standpoint, the thesis is framed within the sociolinguistics of language establishment and minoritisation, the analysis of language ideologies, and a post-structuralist approach to the negotiation of linguistic and social identities in interaction. The quantitative approach to the language usages shows a strong and progressive differentiation between Mataró and Manlleu, where the usage of Catalan increases both across generations and from home to peer-groups, and Castelló, where it is the usage of Castilian that increases. The qualitative analysis shows the maintenance of Catalan in Catalan- speaking households and the incorporation of some uses of Catalan in Castilian-speaking ones in Mataró and Manlleu, while in Castelló the historical process of language shift towards Castilian is still on-going. With regard to usages in the classroom, Catalan is strongly institutionalised and is widely used in Mataró and Manlleu schools, but its use is weak in Castelló classrooms. Touching upon peer-group language usages, in Mataró both Catalan and Castilian L1 speakers show availability to speak their L2; in Manlleu the majority position of Catalan L1 speakers positions Catalan as an unmarked choice and prompts Castilian L1 speakers to accommodate to Catalan; whereas in Castelló it is Castilian that becomes the unmarked choice, leading even to in-group usage of Castilian among Catalan L1 speakers. Allophones tend to speak the majority language in each context, and the public usage of their family languages is highly restricted. The data show that in Mataró and Manlleu both Catalan and Castilian are seen as appropriate for public, out-group usages (i.e. between people with different L1s), whereas in Castelló only Castilian appears as appropriate for these usages and Catalan remains restricted to the practices of Catalan L1 speakers.

Full textThe young people of Alicante live in society where two languages, Castilian and Valencian, coexist. The Valencian language is used by young people from Alicante in both formal and informal settings. Young speakers of Valencian feel a linguistic identification with the language, which is governed by social norms. Bilingual identification could, therefore, be influenced by and influence linguistic competence. The purpose of this study is to examine in which situations and contexts Valencian is used with the aim of evaluating the relationship between the degree of bilingualism, language attitude and level complexity, accuracy and fluency (CAF) in the written Valencian of young people of Alicante. We hypothesized that Valencian has, for the young generation of Alicante, a social function and the attitude towards the language is positive, which in turn is reflected in writing skills. To test our hypothesis we have used a questionnaire of social habits, a diagnostic test in Valencian and two essays, written in Castilian and Valencian. With the participation of 59 young Alicantinos, we conclude that Valencian is used in both formal and informal settings, that the attitude towards the language is positive and that it is considered important to master and preserve the Valencian language. In addition, the participants have proficiency in the Valencian written language, showing complexity and fluency in written expression. On the other hand, their accuracy is higher in Castilian. It has also been seen that the linguistic identification of the participants is relatively correlated to linguistic competence.

Full textIn this paper we analyse the true nature of Valencian nationalism, through its origins and manifestations, considering that it is closely linked to Catalan nationalism and that the reference date is 1906, when the First International Congress of the Catalan Language met in Barcelona. Although this event was theoretically restricted to the cultural and philological world, it shaped a real political roadmap while evidencing the expansionist ambitions of a region in full industrial development against a mainly agrarian Spain. The Pancatalan ideology was not easily implanted in Valencia, where it found the support the petty bourgeoisie, largely anti-Republican and admirer of the Catalan successes. The alliance between the Valencian petty bourgeoisie and Pancatalanism was sealed through a pact (Bases of Castelló), which implied recognising the Catalan nature of the Valencian language, for all that this is not explicitly recognised in the document. Since then, Pancatalanism was built on ambiguity, confusion and, mainly, ignorance on the part of the people, who never knew the true terms under which this private agreement, unknown to most, was written. The Francoist dictatorship and the official marginalisation of Valencian further encouraged the approach to Catalan rules, thanks to an almost personal work carried out by C. Salvador and M. Sanchis Guarner. In parallel, from 1960 J. Fuster defended the Catalan nationality of Valencians and, despite the fact that this thesis was not frankly sanctioned by the University of Valencia, the linguistic thesis was firmly endorsed by this institution, which led to the so-called “Battle of Valencia” during the Transition to democracy. Social peace did not return until the political version was abandoned during the negotiations for the Statute of Autonomy. However, the linguistic version has prevailed in the academia due to the official declaration, in 2005, of the Valencian Language Academy (Acadèmia Valenciana de la Llengua), thus maintaining alive the doubt with regard to the Catalanness of Valencians
