The natural self-respect of dignity and glory that people have towards their nation's land, population, culture, civilization, history, religion, literature, art, politics, philosophy of life etc. is called nationalism. Poet Maithilisharan Gupta has written- "jisako nij gaaruv tatha nij desh ka abheemaan hai vah nar nahin nar- pusu nira hai ya mere lie jarooree saamaan hai” ||The meaning of the word nation is very broad. In the meaning of 'Rajati Rajate Va Iti Rashtram', the word 'Rashtra' is derived from the root 'Raj Deeptau' and 'Sarvdhatubhya: Shtran' (Aunadic Sutra). National consciousness is situated in the form of a universal routine rather than being representative of any particular place, time or character. This eternal life force, which we are calling national consciousness, resides in the psyche of our countrymen, in their heartland. The feeling of nationalism lives in the minds and hearts of its people. This is the national form of India. The entire Sanskrit literature is full of nationalism, but the irony is that due to not being the language of common people, people are still unaware of the secrets hidden in these texts. Right from the Rigveda to cosmic literature, all the concepts of the nation and its related ideas are full of ideas. Abstract:
Word learning in 16 children with specific language impairment (SLI) was compared with that of chronological-age controls (CAC) and vocabulary-age controls (VAC), to examine the extent and nature of word-learning deficits in the children with SLI. The children were exposed to novel words in a story and an explicit teaching context. Five tasks assessed how much the children had learned about the words' phonological form and semantic properties after 6 repetitions (Time 1) and again after 12 repetitions (Time 2) of the words in each context. The SLI group performed significantly worse than the CAC group at both Time 1 and Time 2 on all measures of the words presented in both contexts. They performed similarly to the VAC group (who were on average 2 1/2 years younger) on Time 1 and Time 2 measures from both contexts, except for the Naming task at Time 2, on which their performance was significantly lower. These findings suggest that children with vocabulary deficits have difficulties with both phonological and semantic aspects of word learning.

Abstract:
The purpose of the article is to identify the typological features of modern English and Uzbek imitative words, semantic and contextual description, showing the norm of constant use, translation problems.The morphological, semantic and typological-structural state of mimetic expressions in modern English and Uzbek languages and the problems of mutual translation are highlighted in the research. In Uzbek, imitative words are morphologically divided into separate word groups between independent and non-independent word groups, while in English linguistics, imitative words and independent words formed from imitation are called onomatopeia. However, it was found that the independent words made from imitation in the morphological layer belong to one of the existing independent word groups according to their grammatical signs. Also, the disadvantages of translating imitative words from Uzbek to English, from English to Uzbek, including imitative words can be omitted in the translation text or expressed by transliteration.

We used free association tasks to investigate second language (L2) verb-argument constructions (VACs) and the ways in which their access is sensitive to statistical patterns of usage (verb type-token frequency distribution, VAC-verb contingency, verb-VAC semantic prototypicality). 131 German, 131 Spanish, and 131 Czech advanced L2 learners of English generated the first word that came to mind to fill the V slot in 40 sparse VAC frames such as ‘he __ across the …’, ‘it __ of the …’, etc. For each VAC, we compared these results with corpus analyses of verb selection preferences in 100 million words of usage and with the semantic network structure of the verbs in these VACs. For all language groups, multiple regression analyses predicting the frequencies of verb types generated for each VAC show independent contributions of (i) verb frequency in the VAC, (ii) VAC-verb contingency, and (iii) verb prototypicality in terms of centrality within the VAC semantic network. L2 VAC processing involves rich associations, tuned by verb type and token frequencies and their contingencies of usage, which interface syntax, lexis, and semantics.

Abstract:
The number of possible word forms in agglutinative languages is theoretically unlimited. This, in turn, creates the problem of POS tagging (part-of-speech) of out-of-vocabulary (OOV) words in agglutinative lan-guages. In agglutinative languages, words are formed by combining stems and suffixes. Because phonetic harmony and disharmony occur when suf-fixes are added to the root, it is necessary to analyze both phonetic and morphological changes. When solving many NLP tasks, it is necessary to reduce word forms to their root (stemming). Removing all inflectional affixes from a word and lemmatizing the rest of the word is considered one of the important tasks of natural language processing (NLP), and this process is called stemming. The stemming process is important in infor-mation retrieval (IR) systems.

Abstract The experience of some 500 Canadian and Newfoundland women who served overseas as Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) nurses during the Great War has been eclipsed by the British record. Sent as auxiliary assistants to trained nurses in the military hospitals, Canadian VADs confronted a complex mix of emotional, physical, and intellectual challenges, including their “colonial” status. As casually trained, inexperienced amateurs in an unfamiliar, highly structured hospital culture, they were often resented by the overworked and undervalued trained nurses, whose struggle for professional recognition was necessarily abandoned during the crisis of war. The frequently intimate physical needs of critically ill soldiers also demanded a rationalisation of the VAD's role as “nurse” within a maternalist framework that eased social tensions for both VAD and patient. As volunteers assisting paid practitioners, the Canadian VAD experience offers new insights into a critical era of women's developing professional identities.

Recent evidence indicates that acoustic features associated with emotional prosody in speech may be an inexpensive, non-invasive method for differentiating among dementia types. In particular, frequency measures in the speech of people with dementia have been associated with listeners’ perception of emotional prosody. The purpose of this study was to determine if second formant (F2) transition information would enhance these differentiations. Prerecorded speech samples of Cookie Theft picture descriptions from 10 individuals with dementia of the Alzheimer’s type (DAT), 5 with vascular dementia (VaD), 9 with MCI, and 10 neurologically healthy controls (NHC) were obtained from the DementiaBank. Nine words that had initial obstruent consonants that occurred at least two times in each of the participant groups were selected for measurement. The F2 durations, extents, and slope were measured and analyzed. Across group comparisons revealed no pattern for F2 durations or extents. The fricatives had longer F2 durations than the plosives. Across word comparisons revealed significant differences across the consonant vowel combinations for all three measures. A group by word interaction occurred for the F2 slope with the VaD group exhibiting larger slopes than the other two groups.

Abstract:
Tato zpráva popisuje  experimentální práci na statistické jazykovém modelování pomocí rekurentních neuronových sítí (RNN). Je zde předložen důkladný přehled dosud publikovaných prací, následovaný popisem algoritmů pro trénování příslušných modelů. Většina z popsaných technik byla implementována ve vlastním nástroji, založeném na knihovně Theano. Byla provedena rozsáhlá sada experimentů s modelem Jednoduché rekurentní sítě (SRN), která odhalila některé jejich dosud nepublikované vlastnosti. Při statické evaluaci modelu byly dosažené výsledky relativně cca. o 2.7 % horší, než nejlepší publikované výsledky. V případě dynamické evaluace však bylo dosaženo relativního zlepšení o 1 %. Dále bylo experimentováno i s modelem Strukturně omezené rekurentní sítě, ale ten se nepodařilo natrénovat k předpokládáným výkonům. Konečně bylo navrženo rozšíření SRN, pojmenované Náhodně prořidlá rekurentní neuronová síť. Experimentálně bylo potvrzeno, že RS-RNN dosahuje lepších výsledků v učení vlastního trénovacího korpusu a kombinace několika RS-RNN modelů přináší o 30 % větší zlepšení než kombinace stejného počtu SRN.

Abstract:

Syftet med studien har varit att undersöka hur grundskolelärare väljer sina undervisningsformer och vilka aspekter som spelar in. I litteraturdelen tar vi bland annat upp bakomliggande faktorer till varför grundskolelärare väljer den undervisningsform som de gör. Vi tar även upp vad eget arbete, traditionell klassundervisning och individualisering innebär. Den empiriska delen består av intervjuer med lärare som undervisar i språk. Lärarna har olika lång yrkeserfarenhet vilket inte var av avgörande betydelse för studiens resultat. Resultatet visar att det finns flera faktorer, som till exempel tid, erfarenhet och personlig övertygelse, som är avgörande för undervisningsvalet. Slutsatsen vi har dragit är att de två mest avgörande faktorerna ändå är personlig övertygelse och erfarenhet.

Abstract:
Inledning: Det är relevant att i dagens samhälle vara en god läsare. Förhoppningsvis är skolan platsen som ska hjälpa eleverna att få ett större intresse för läsning. Därför anser vi att denna studie är aktuell för att få förståelse för var och hur eleverna beskriver sina idealiska lässituationer när det gäller nöjesläsning. Det är av stor vikt att läsplatsen är bearbetad och anpassad av lärare så att eleverna får en möjlighet att kunna läsa. Syfte: Syftet med vår studie är att undersöka eventuella könsskillnader i hur flickor respektive pojkar beskriver en idealisk läsplats samt vilken bokgenre flickor och pojkar föredrar att nöjesläsa. Frågeställningarna vi vill få svar på är: Vad kännetecknar pojkars och flickors idealiska läsplats? Vilken bokgenre väljer pojkar och flickor att nöjesläsa? Metod: Metoden vi har valt att använda är inspirerad av Photo Elicitation Interviews. Dock har vi valt att eleverna kommer att rita istället för att ta bilder. Därefter följer en intervju för att följa upp teckningarna och ta reda på vad eleverna har ritat och anledningen bakom det. Resultat: Resultatet visade olika platser som eleverna hade valt att rita när de tänkte på sina idealiska läsplatser med fokus på nöjesläsning. Resultatet visade bland annat att det var åtta elever som hade ritat någonting som passade in under en av studiens analyskategorin, det vill säga Naturtema. 14 elever hade ritat någonting som hade med det egna rummet att göra. Det kunde bland annat vara klassrummet, sovrummet eller de egna hemmet. En utmärkande analyskategori var där relation står i fokus. Här passade elevteckningar in där motivet var någon form av relation i teckningen. Bland annat syns en familjerelation eller religionstillhörighet. Resultatet angående frågeställningen vilka böcker eleverna föredrog att läsa visade att 12 elever läser helst skönlitterära böcker och de andra åtta föredrog faktaböcker. Slutligen delades resultatet upp i analysavsnittet, i hur många flickor respektive pojkar det var som hamnade under de olika analyskategorierna. Det gjordes för att se om det fanns eventuella könsskillnader. Det som var utmärkande när det gäller flickor och pojkar, var det faktum att flerpojkar föredrog faktaböcker än flickor.

AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Afknouery is ’n algemene verskynsel onder laerskoolkinders. Alhoewel afknouery dikwels as ’n normale deel van die grootwordproses beskou word, dui verskeie ondersoeke op die negatiewe sosiale, sielkundige en fisiese gevolge wat daarmee gepaard gaan. Wanneer ’n kind geboelie word, raak dit noodwendig die hele gesin. Elke gesin het egter unieke eienskappe of maniere om krisisse (soos afknouery) te hanteer en daarby aan te pas. Gesinsveerkragtigheid verwys na die gesin se vermoë om weerstand te bied teen, en te herstel na, ontwrigtende lewensuitdagings. Die doel van hierdie ondersoek was om vas te stel watter gesinskenmerke geassosieer kan word met goeie aanpassing van gesinne waarvan ’n kind geboelie word. Die studiepopulasie was gesinne met laerskoolkinders wat vir ses maande of langer geboelie is in die voorafgaande drie jaar, en wat in die Suid-Kaap woon. Ma’s het as verteenwoordigers van hul gesinne opgetree en namens die gesinne aan die ondersoek deelgeneem. Agt-en-veertig verteenwoordigers van gesinne het elk sewe selfvoltooiingsvraelyste asook ’n biografiese vraelys met twee oop einde-vrae voltooi. Die resultate van die kwalitatiewe data het getoon dat gesinne veral deur die afknouery geraak is deurdat die kinders wat geboelie is, negatiewe emosies soos hartseer ervaar het. Die meeste gesinne het die afknouery hanteer deur met ’n onderwyser, skoolhoof of die beheerliggaam te gaan praat, of deur raad te gee aan die kind wat geboelie is. Die resultate van die kwantitatiewe data, wat met behulp van korrelasies en regressie-ontledings verkry is, het die volgende gesinsveerkragtigheidskenmerke geïdentifiseer: die kwaliteit van gesinskommunikasie, positiewe kommunikasiepatrone wat omgee en ondersteuning oordra, standvastigheid en duursaamheid van die gesinseenheid, die gesin se gevoel van interne sterk punte, betroubaarheid en die vermoë om saam te werk, die gesin se pogings om vernuwend en aktief te wees, om nuwe dinge te probeer en om te leer, die mate waartoe die gesin roetines gebruik en handhaaf, die gesin se klem op die vasstelling van voorspelbare kommunikasie tussen ouer en kind, die gesin se klem op die vasstelling van voorspelbare roetines om ’n kind se gevoel van selfbestuur en orde te bevorder, asook die gesin se klem op saamwees. Die bevindinge van hierdie ondersoek vul ’n leemte in die literatuur oor gesinne waarvan ’n kind geboelie word. Dit kan nuttig aangewend word in die beplanning en ontwikkeling van intervensies om hierdie gesinne te versterk en meer veerkragtig te maak. Die geïdentifiseerde gesinskenmerke laat ook die moontlikheid oop vir verdere navorsing om hierdie kenmerke in meer besonderhede te ondersoek en te beskryf.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Bullying is a common phenomenon among primary school children. Although bullying is often seen as a relatively normal part of growing up, various studies have indicated its negative social, psychological and physical effects. When a child is bullied, the matter inevitably concerns the whole family. However, every family has unique characteristics or ways of handling and adapting to a crisis (such as bullying). Family resilience refers to the family’s ability to withstand and rebound from disruptive life challenges. The goal of this study was to determine which family characteristics can be associated with positive adaptation in families of which a child had been bullied. The study population consisted of families with primary school children that had been bullied for six months or longer over the past three years, and reside in the Southern Cape. Mothers acted as representatives and participated in the study on behalf of their families. Forty eight family representatives each completed seven self-completing questionnaires as well as a biographical questionnaire containing two open ended questions. Results from the qualitative data, which was analysed using content analysis, showed that families were affected by the bullying, especially in the sense that the children that were bullied experienced negative emotions such as sadness. Most of the families coped with the bulling by talking to a teacher, principal or governing body, or by giving advice to the child that had been bullied. Results from the quantitative data, which was analysed using correlations and regression analyses, indicated positive correlations between family adaptation and quality of family communication, positive communication patterns that convey caring and support, fortitude and durability of the family unit, the family’s sense of internal strengths, dependability and the ability to work together, the family’s efforts to be innovative and active, to experience new things and to learn, the degree to which families use and maintain routines, the family’s emphasis on establishing predictable communication between parent and child, the family’s emphasis on establishing predictable routines to promote a child’s sense of autonomy and order, as well as the family’s emphasis on togetherness. The findings of the study fill a gap in the literature about families in which a child has been bullied. The findings can be utilised in the planning and developing of interventions to strengthen these families and to make them more resilient. The identified family characteristics also leave the possibility of further research to investigate and describe these characteristics in greater detail.

Syftet är att undersöka 62 stycken vårdnadshavares beskrivning av hur de motiverar val av förskola med religiös profil utifrån ett fenomenologiskt perspektiv. Vår frågeställning är: Hur beskriver vårdnadshavarna sitt val av förskola? Hur beskriver vårdnadshavarna sina upplevelser av en förskola med religiös profil? Tillsammans med fenomenologi och begreppen fenomen, förförståelse och livsvärld så kom vi till resultatet att det var väldigt individbaserat men att det fanns flera sammanhängande teman. De beskrev valet av förskolan utifrån rekommendationer, personligt besök av förskolan och dess närhet till hemmet. Flera tog upp den religiösa profilen som anledning för val av förskola samt att flera valde förskolan utöver den religiösa profilen. Vi har funnit att vårdnadshavare ser förskolor med specifik profil som ett komplement till barnens utveckling och att det beror mera på deras egen syn på vad förskolan kan bidra till deras barn.

Musikundervisningen tar form i relation till dessa val, och en utgångspunkt är att med hjälp av kvalitativa intervjuer och observation identifiera vad tre musiklärare verksamma i grundskolan uppfattar som väsentligt i undervisningen – vilket samtidigt säger något om det innehåll som väljs bort.  Undervisning står ständigt i relation till och påverkas av olika fenomen som: läraren, eleven, resurser, tid, gruppstorlek och inte minst politiskt styrda dokument. Musiklärare kan inte enbart fokusera på "utlärande" – lärandeprocesser styrs av balansen mellan läraren, de resurser läraren har till handa och själva samspelet med eleverna. Det perspektiv som anläggs i studien kan beskrivas som en fenomenografi-inspirerad musikdidaktisk undersökning; jag har använt mig av fenomenografiska analysmetoder, vilka kompletterades med en musikdidaktisk läsning av empirin. Den föreliggande analysen visar att brist på tid och det stora elevantalet i förhållande till stipulerade kunskapskrav skapar utmaningar för musiklärarna och deras undervisning. Lärarna känner sig otillräckliga, bland annat när det gäller bedömning, progression och kunskapskrav, och undervisningen karaktäriseras ofta som lösningsorienterad. Av studiens resultat framgår också att lärarens utbildning och tidigare erfarenheter har påverkan på undervisningsinnehållet och trots att kursplanen öppnar mot andra förmågor, är det spel på instrument och det lärande som är kopplat till detta spel, som dominerar musikundervisningen.

I denna uppsats studeras fyra individers väg ut ur olika problematiska livssituationer. Syftet är att belysa vändpunkter och uppbrottsprocesser. Möjlighetsperspektivet, vad det är som fungerar, fokuserades snarare än problembilder. Metoden var kvalitativ med halvstrukturerade intervjuer kring två teman: vändpunkter och vägen ut, i ett livshistoriskt perspektiv. Uppsatsens teoretiska perspektiv utgick från en uppbrottsmodell och ett symboliskt interaktionistiskt perspektiv. Vändpunkterna och vägarna ut har sett olika ut för våra intervjupersoner. Gemensamt för dem alla är att de haft en tydlig upplevelse av en vändpunkt och att stödjande relationer i omgivningen varit viktiga i uppbrottsprocessen. Hos dem alla kan man förstå att det har varit en process över tid som lett fram till den slutliga vändpunkten.

Det är inte bara elever med dyslexi som har läs- och skrivsvårigheter, utan problemet har ökat överallt i vårt moderna samhälle. Kraven på att läsa och ha god läsförståelse ökar i takt med att allt mer information skickas till oss via media, internet och post. Detta problem medförde att vi på den skola jag arbetar startade ett läsprojekt för att öka elevernas läsförståelse och därmed också deras resultat i skolan. Syftet med mitt arbete är att ta reda på vilka svårigheter och orsaker det finns för elever som har läs- och skrivsvårigheter, samt hur man ökar deras läsförståelseförmåga. Kan elever bara genom att läsa mera, kunna förbättra sina prestationer i läsförståelse. För att få ett svar på detta har jag undersökt elevers resultat av läsförståelsediagnoser. Resultaten presenteras utifrån en stanineskala som är en standardskala där elevernas poäng överförs till en niogradig skala. Ett staninevärde på fem motsvarar medelvärde. Sammanlagt nittiosju elever i samma ålder har kartlagts under högstadietiden. Resultatet vid undersökningen blev att läsförståelsen förbättrades för de svaga läsarna. Det visade sig också att de som var bra i sin läsförståelse i årskurs sju, sänkte sina resultat och närmade sig medelstanine fem. Ökad lästid i skolan har gjort att eleverna ökat sin läsförståelse. Däremot krävs det en utveckling av projektet, där samtalet kring det man läser sätts i fokus. Samtal ökar elevers förståelse och reflekterande.


Abstract

The problem with dyslexia has increased everywhere in our modern society. Requirements of proficiency in reading and comprehension skills, increases at a similar speed to that which information is disseminated. This problem led to a reading project in the school where I work. The aim was to increase pupils reading, comprehension and also their overall performance. Is it a possibility that by just reading more in school, pupils can improve their performance? To find and answer I have researched the pupils results from a reading comprehension diagnosis. The results are presented from a stanine scale, a standard scale where pupils points transfers to a nine degree scale. A stanine value of five is equal to mean and the lowest values are one and two. The reading diagnosis was undertaken by 97 pupils in the same age. The fist was carried out in autumn term of year seven and then every autumn up to year nine. The results show that reading comprehension improved for weaker readers from level one and two in year seven, to level three and four in year nine. The results also showed that pupils with good abilities in year seven lowered their results to middle stanine five in year nine. More time for reading in school shows that pupils increase their reading comprehension. However, the project needs to develop further, with focus on discussions following the reading of a text.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The study was conducted in the Western Cape Province to investigate the effect of soil preparation on selected soil physical properties. This study was necessitated by the negative effects that high soil bulk density has on the growth and production of a vine. Soil preparation in South Africa are applied to remove root limiting layers in the subsoil and to create a larger soil volume for root growth. The question is whether it is always necessary because of the destruction of macropore structure and also the high costs that is involved. The study includes different soil forms, different depths of tillage, different tillage operations and also the change of soil physical properties with time. Soil physical properties that was investigated include, bulk density (cloth method), infiltration (mini disk infiltrometer and double ring infiltrometer), shear strength (pocket vane tester), soil strength (penetrometer) and root distribution (profile wall method). The main finding was that the positive effects of soil preparation were still clear after 25 years. The bulk density, shear strength, penetration resistance and infiltration with the double ring infiltrometer of the deeper soil preparation practices were considerably lower than those of undisturbed soil. Soil preparation shallower than 60 cm recompacted more than the deeper tillage treatments. Hydraulic conductivity with the mini disk infiltrometer yielded mixed results. This was mainly because measurements represented hydraulic conductivity through the whole profile and therefore can be influenced by many factors. Root distribution has increased with depth of tillage and the effect was clear at Nietvoorbij in the deeper (> 60 cm) soil preparation treatments. There were no significant difference between the two soil preparation methods (delve plough and soilmix) at Kanonkop, although the effect of secondary compaction by the soilmix was quite clear. Recompaction over a year was clear in the 2009 and 2010 tillage treatments at Broodkraal. The methods that were used to determine the soil physical properties have all yield good results. At all the sites the tillage treatments generally yielded better results than the undisturbed soils. It was also clear that the longer the time after tillage the smaller become the difference between the tillage treatments and the undisturbed soils. Recompaction did occur and therefore soil preparation might possibly be applied again before new vines wants to be planted.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die studie is in die Wes-Kaap Provinsie gedoen om die effek van grondvoorbereiding op geselekteerde grondfisiese eienskappe te ondersoek. Hierdie studie is genoodsaak deur die nadelige gevolge wat hoë gronddigthede op die groei en produksie van ’n wingerdstok het. Grondvoorbereiding in Suid-Afrika word toegepas om beperkende lae in die ondergrond te verwyder en sodoende ‘n groter grondvolume vir wortelgroei beskikbaar te stel. Die vraag is egter of dit altyd noodsaaklik is weens die vernietiging van voorkeur vloeikanale en die hoë kostes wat daarmee gepaard gaan. Die studie sluit verskillende grondvorms, verskillende dieptes van bewerking en verskillende tipes bewerking in asook hoe die toestande met verloop van tyd verander. Grondfisiese eienskappe wat ondersoek is, sluit in: bulkdigtheid (kluitmetode), infiltrasie (“mini disk” - en dubbelring infiltrometer), skuifsterkte (skroefbladmeter), grondsterkte (penetrometer) en wortelverspreidings (profielwand metode). Die studie is uitgevoer by drie verskillende proeflokaliteite, nl. Nietvoorbij, Kanonkop en Broodkraal. Die vernaamste bevindings was dat die grondvoorbereidingsbehandelings se voordelige effek oor die langtermyn, na 25 jaar, steeds duidelik waarneembaar was. Die bulkdigtheid, skuifsterkte, penetrasieweerstand en infiltrasie met dubbelring infiltrometer van die dieper grondbewerkingspraktyke was aansienlik laer as die kontrole behandelings (onversteurde grond) gewees. Die grondvoorbereidingsaksies vlakker as 60 cm het tot ʼn mate weer herverdig. Hidrouliese geleiding met minidisk infiltrometer het baie wisselvallige resultate opgelewer. Dit is hoofsaaklik omdat die meting die geleiding deur die hele profiel verteenwoordig en daar baie faktore is wat dit kan beïnvloed. Die wortelverspreiding het met diepte van grondbewerking toegeneem en die langtermyn voordelige effek was duidelik by Nietvoorbij in die dieper (> 60 cm) grondvoorbereidingsbehandelings sigbaar. Die twee grondvoorbereidingspraktyke (dolbewerking en “soilmix”) by Kanonkop het nie betekenisvol van mekaar verskil nie, alhoewel die effek van sekondêre kompaksie soos veroorsaak deur die “soilmix” implement, duidelik was. Herverdigting oor die tydperk van ’n jaar was duidelik tussen die 2009- en 2010 bewerking by Broodkraal. Die metingsmetodes waarmee die grondfisiese eienskappe ondersoek is, het almal goeie resultate gelewer. By al die proeflokaliteite het die bewerkingsbehandelings oor die algemeen beter resultate as die kontrole-behandelings (onversteur) gelewer. Hoe langer die tydperk na grondvoorbereiding hoe kleiner was die verskil tussen die bewerkingsbehandelings en die kontrole. Herverdigting het wel voorgekom en daarom sal grondvoorbereiding moontlik weer toegepas moet word wanneer nuwe aanplantings gemaak word.

Over the last decades, a variety of verbal models have been proposed to account for empirical findings on bilingual word processing and second language (L2) acquisition. However, in these domains only a small number of computational models have seen the light, including localist connectionist models like the Bilingual Interactive Activation (BIA) model (Dijkstra & van Heuven, 1998; van Heuven et al., 1998), the Bilingual Interactive Activation + (BIA+) model (Dijkstra & van Heuven, 2002), and Multilink(+) (Dijkstra et al., 2019; 2022a). In this chapter, we review structural and processing characteristics of these models, such as input coding, lateral inhibition, word frequency, language nodes, and task demands. Finally, advantages and limitations of current computational models are discussed.

Most word association tasks (WATs) focus on semantic representations but can also illuminate other linguistic phenomena (Van Rensbergen et al., 2015). This study reports a WAT comprising 152 Portuguese verbs and their corresponding compositional deverbal action nouns ending in -ção, that aims to test whether the morphological nature of the stimulus conditions the response. The results suggest that (i) the morphological structure of the stimuli does condition the response; (ii) associations can be constrained by grammatical factors other than semantics; and (iii) L1 Portuguese speakers are more likely to respond with a word belonging to the same word family if the stimulus is a complex word.

De vraag is wat we kunnen leren van ervaringen bij gerealiseerde projecten, en welke rationele basis er is om, met name bij nieuwbouwplannen, een trendbreuk teweeg te brengen in de richting decentrale oplossingen voor waterzuivering en waterhergebruik op wijkniveau, als al-ternatief voor de huidige, centrale systemen. Daartoe zijn negen verschillende gerealiseerde pro-jecten, operationeel op praktijkschaal, verkend aan de hand van literatuurstudie, data-analyse, inter-views, enquêtes en scenarioberekeningen. Verschillende prestatie-indicatoren, o.a. met betrekking tot terugwinning van grondstoffen, waterkwaliteit, hergebruik en kosten zijn inzichtelijk gemaakt. Bo-vendien is onderzoek gedaan naar de acceptatie van burgers m.b.t. governance structuren (top-down versus bottom-up) als het gaat om de stedelijke waterketen en diensten m.b.t. waterlevering en wa-terbehandeling.Uit dit verkennende onderzoek is gebleken dat alternatieve systemen (brongescheiden sanitatie met vacuümriolering en lokaal gebruik van regenwater) voor toiletspoeling, evt. tuin en wasmachine tot substantieel minder gebruik van drinkwater leiden. Bovendien wordt met separate inzameling en be-handeling van zwart- en grijswater de terugwinning van nutriënten (N, P, C) gestimuleerd en is er bij decentrale behandeling van grijswater jaarrond aanvoer van schoon water wat met name in droge periodes meerwaarde heeft. Daarentegen leiden systemen op wijkschaal, mede vanwege de relatief kleine schaal, tot relatief hoge financiële kosten, d.w.z. in vergelijking met de kosten voor aanleg en beheer van reguliere systemen. Daarbij wordt benadrukt dat vergelijking van kleine, decentrale sys-temen met de huidige, grootschalige centrale (afval)watersystemen lastig is vanwege de relatief ge-ringe hoeveelheid data die beschikbaar is m.b.t. prestatie-indicatoren van decentrale systemen. We kunnen daarom slechts voorlopige en minder harde uitspraken doen over een aantal prestaties van decentrale concepten, bijv. m.b.t. waterkwaliteit. Bovendien is de beoordeling van prestatie-indicato-ren problematisch vanwege ongelijksoortigheid. De huidige grootschalige systemen zijn goeddeels uit-ontwikkeld (innovatie was gericht op kostenefficiency), terwijl decentrale, nieuwe vormen van sani-tatie nog volop in ontwikkeling zijn, met duurzaamheid als drijfveer.Aandachtspunten en vragen liggen met name op het gebied van governance. In de huidige inrichting en organisatie van de waterketen zijn de verantwoordelijkheden, beleidsontwikkeling en operatie in-stitutioneel geborgd en sectoraal verdeeld (waterbedrijf, gemeente en waterschap). Nieuwe vormen van sanitatie en gebruik van regenwater op wijkschaal brengen de noodzaak tot vergaande samen-werking en nieuwe vraagstukken met zich mee.Om de prestaties van grootschalige, centrale systemen m.b.t. afvalwaterbehandeling en watervoor-ziening beter te kunnen vergelijken met decentrale systemen op wijkschaal wordt aanbevolen om gelijktijdig te innoveren op beide schalen, waarbij de innovatie (ook op grote, centrale schaal) gericht is op klimaatadaptatie en aansluiting bij de circulaire economie. Belangrijk daarbij is langjarige data-verzameling en monitoring, zodat de integrale prestaties van concepten en systemen kunnen worden gevolgd, beoordeeld en verbeterd, in de context van integrale duurzaamheid. Daarnaast wordt aan-bevolen om, indien mogelijk, decentrale (afvalwater)systemen op wijkniveau op te schalen naar een grootte van minimaal 3.000 inwoners, om het (op berekeningen gebaseerde) veronderstelde break-evenpoint (kosten decentraal vergelijkbaar met grootschalige, centrale systemen) in de praktijk te ve-rifiëren. Gerealiseerde projecten, bijv. Reitdiep in Groningen of Waterschoon in Sneek, kunnen wor-den benut voor verdere innovatie gericht op kringloopsluiting en circulaire economie.

In dit rapport worden de resultaten gepresenteerd van de enquête die in december 2023 is uitgezet bij de deelnemers van Pientere Tuinen, een participatief en burgerwetenschappelijk project met als doel meer Nederlandse tuinen te vergroenen. Deze enquête is onderdeel van het onderzoek Tuinverhalen dat in samenwerking met Pientere Tuinen wordt uitgevoerd door het lectoraat Communicatie, Participatie en Sociaal-Ecologisch Leren (CoPSEL) bij Hogeschool Van Hall Larenstein. Binnen dit onderzoek worden de motivaties en belemmeringen die tuineigenaren ervaren om veranderingen op het gebied van vergroening centraal gesteld. Deze enquête fungeert als eerste stap (nulmeting) voordat er dieper op deze motivaties en belemmeringen wordt ingegaan door middel van kwalitatieve interviews met zowel deelnemers van Pientere Tuinen als bij case studies zoals in Almere Regenboogbuurt. Daarbij is het relevant om te weten hoe een participatief en burgerwetenschappelijk project als Pientere Tuinen invloed heeft op kennis en eventuele vaardigheden rondom vergroening.

From pet food to sunscreen, proposals to cut value-added tax (VAT) on a range of products and services are ever increasing. One of the best-known and far-reaching campaigns of this type has been the fight to abolish VAT on feminine hygiene products. More popularly known as the ‘tampon tax’, this issue has united campaigners from across to globe, contributing to policymakers in up to 25 countries removing or reducing taxes on menstrual products since Kenya’s landmark decision in 2004. Framed through a simple and evocative lens of fairness and equality, the campaign to end the ‘tampon tax’ has caught the attention of the public, press and policymakers alike, catapulting the oft-taboo issue of menstrual health to the top of the political agenda. Whilst social, economic, and menstrual health contexts vary per adopting country, the core message of the political announcements has stayed the same: abolishing the ‘tampon tax’ will address gender equality by resulting in more accessible and affordable menstrual products for women and girls.

Scholars have long struggled to understand why individual preferences for redistribution often diverge widely from their material self-interest. The puzzle is acute in Latin America, largely democratic and yet one of the most unequal regions in the world. Using an original online survey experiment spanning 8 countries and 12,000 respondents across Latin America, we find significant evidence for an under-explored explanation: misconceptions regarding the distributional effects of current tax policy. Treated respondents who are informed that an increase in the value-added tax (VAT) is regressive are significantly more likely to prefer policy reforms that make the tax more progressive. We are further able to identify mechanisms. A large fraction of respondents underestimate the regressivity of the VAT. Their misperceptions are linked to fundamental views about the world: these respondents are disproportionately right-leaning and more likely to attribute success to individual effort than luck. Despite the deep-rooted nature of their misperceptions, treatment effects are largest among individuals who believe the VAT is not regressive. These findings contribute both to understanding the political economy of redistribution and the potential for information interventions to shift support for fiscal adjustment policies protecting the most vulnerable.

Mexican public finances are weak; national tax collection as a percentage of GDP is among the lowest in the world. On the other hand, expenditure needs are enormous. There have been several attempts to reform our tax system but they have not been successful due to different factors such as political interests, excess of oil revenues, and deficient design of the reforms. One of the most important problems is that every reform has been attempted with no significant change on the expenditure side, or what is more, ignoring links between taxes and other economic areas such as social security contributions. Recently Levy (2008) has proposed a major change on the expenditure side. In particular he argues that social policy should dramatically be modified to be able to provide a universal health care system together with unemployment insurance, which at the end would promote formality. This calls for an adequate financial source. In this work we estimate the potential VAT collection to finance this proposal, taking into account some partial equilibrium effects in a context of coexistence of formality and informality. Here the former is defined in terms of tax compliance only.

The approval of Decisions 599 and 600 on the Harmonization of Substantial and Procedural Aspects of Value Added Taxes and the Harmonization of Excise Type Taxes (VAT and selective taxes) by the Commission of the Andean Community is a notable victory for the Andean integration process and sets a precedent in the developing world. The Decisions amount to an agreement on how to design national laws on a modern and administratively coordinated VAT, as well as joint rules on excise taxes. These accords sprang from the political will of the Andean authorities working in this field, the countries¿ technical capacities, and the catalyzing role played by the political authority of the Andean Community¿s General Secretariat (GS), which received technical support from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). Representatives of the five member countries¿ Finance Ministries and Taxation Directorates participated actively and enthusiastically in these efforts. The process began with a background study commissioned using funds from an IDB regional technical cooperation project, followed by three negotiating rounds and eight meetings of experts and officials organized by the GS (With the financial and technical support of the IDB through the Special Initiative on Trade and Integration).

Review question / Objective: Population: Children (< 18 years) who were definitively diagnosed with allergic rhinitis were included, without concomitant other diseases. No limitation on location or gender. This study will only consider randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of Chinese herbal medicine for treating patients with allergic rhinitis.
