Abstract:
Introduction Working life can bring exposure to stresses which in turn can impact on health. Recovery from work stressors is thought to be essential in preventing fatigue and eventually burnout. Sleep and Vacation are important types of recovery. One mechanism thought to interfere with recovery is Work-Related Rumination, in particular its subtype: Affective Rumination. This concept appears to be conceptually similar to the Depressive Rumination concept of Brooding, which is thought to be predictive of depression. The study aims to look at the effect of affective rumination over a naturally occurring vacation period. Participants Teachers were recruited for the study as teaching is a high stress profession and it also has a naturally occurring break from work in the form of half term. A total of 1344 teachers participated in phase I and a total of 57 in phase 2. In the latter phase participants were recruited on the basis of their Work-Related Rumination Scores to create two groups. Method In Phase 1 teachers were invited to complete a number of online self-report measures looking at Teacher Stress, Work-related rumination and Sleep Quality. In Phase 2 Teachers were asked to wear an Actiwatch and complete a sleep diary over 18 nights; including 2 work weeks with a vacation in the middle. They were asked to complete a measure of Work-related rumination at four different time points. Results Whilst objective sleep measures did show a change over the vacation period, there were no differences between Low and High Affective Ruminators. On subjective measures, vacation was associated with an increase in sleep quality for the High Affective Ruminator and for both groups for Feelings of Refreshment. Evidence for a mediating role of rumination was found. Conclusion Work-related rumination affects perception of sleep quality but not objective measures. Possible reasons for this are discussed.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to make a chrono-psychological assessment of the type of time organization applied in Algerian schools. Comparison was made between the single and double vacation types of school timing organization based on a sample of pupils aged between 11 and 12 years. The results of the study highlight the physiological and psychological impact of the two types of school vacation on Algerian pupils. Furthermore the daily and weekly attention levels of pupils in the double vacation type of organization indicate that this type of time organization is well suited for Algerian pupils who seem well adapted to their school timing. With regard to the behavior of the two children observed during the study it was found that those in the double vacation type were better adapted to daily school life compared to their peers in the single type of vacation. However during the week it is the pupils in the single vacation type who showed a better level of adaptation. The results also indicate that regardless of the type of time organization and the time of school entrance the subjects showed no troubles with regard to time of sleeping or awaking: Pupils from the two types of time organization slept more than the average time indicated by chrono-psychological research. However it was also shown that the brake taken tuesday afternoon by pupils from the double vacation type - unlike their peers in the single vacation type- had no positive effects, but the brake taken in the weekend by all pupils regardless of the type of vacation was useful for since it enabled them to take a rest and overcome their fatigue. With regard to extra- curricular school activities they clearly appear to be the same for all pupils

The website in the library is as a marvelous key to leading the readers to treasure island of knowledge. Because of this reason, readers get on the internet much more often than they does in person. What role will these websites play in the future education? With the tendency of E- generation, will the readers’ desire be met from the browse provided by these websites? Is the design of the websites still popular in terms of the users’ need? Otherwise, is it the functioned- based design that counts? How to help users get what want is the key point, which catch our full attention at the same time. Of the documents at home and abroad, the discourse about the usability is still not sufficient. From this point of view, the researcher is planning to evaluate all websites of public vocational school around the island.. Furtherfore, the author looks forward to building up standard criteria widely used at school to attract students’ attention. The coping behaviors most students use are “shirking” and “emotion relieving”, only a few students have “emotional disturbance.” 3. 61.6% students have mental health problem. 4. There’s obvious difference between boys and girls when it comes to “stress from parents” and “stress from examination.” 5. There’s obvious difference between male students and female students in “positive coping responses” and “facing the pressure.” 6. “Stress from examination”, “self expectation”, “stress from teachers” and “stress from parents” have significant influence on “positive coping responses”. These variables explain 34.2% of the effects. 7. “Stress from examination”, “self expectation”, “stress from studies”, and “stress from parents” have significant influence on “negative coping responses”. These variables explain 27.5% of the effects 8. It is predictable that the important variables of mental health are “stress from parents”, “stress from studies”, “facing problems” “emotional disturbance”, etc.. The above results have been discussed in the thesis and some suggestions for further study are made as well.

ABSTRACT This study investigates the relationship between religious belief and the motivations of participating in service-learning by vocational high school students. Service-learning has been set up as a compulsory program in all of the high schools in Taipei, Taiwan. Students are required to participate in any forms of volunteering activities, either in a group or individually, at least eight hours each semester, to complete the “mandatory volunteerism” program. This study seeks to find new ways to look at this issue, by drawing together understandings from the fields of construction of religious belief, and the relevant works of the motivations underlying mandatory volunteerism. The theoretical framing of the study therefore moves it beyond positions frequently associated with the perspectives of motivations to volunteer, to a broader conception of the relationship between religious belief and the motivation to volunteer. This study aims to address the following questions: 1.The relationship between vocational high school students’ religious belief and their motivations to volunteer in the service-learning program. 2.The influence of socialization processes on the students’ motivation to volunteer. 3.The effect of the “Mandatory Volunteerism” program on the students’ ongoing volunteering. 4.The construction of the students’ religious identities. Twelve high school students aged 15 ~17, from a public vocational high school in Taipei, were selected for the study. The study split the students into two groups for comparison. The two groups were determined by the form of participating in mandatory volunteering activities, Group A containing students who have experienced volunteering as a group and Group B being students who volunteered individually. A combination of qualitative form of enquiry and case study approach was used in collecting and analyzing data, which is presented in the form of theme comparison. Data sources included three aspects: mandatory volunteerism program documents, participants’ personal and school profiles; observations in classrooms, break time and volunteering activities; and semi-structured interviews with the participants, their peer groups and their class teachers. The main findings are as follows: 1.Students volunteering as a group (Group A) were able to describe their motivations to volunteer more clearly and reasonably. 2.Students volunteering as a group (Group A) were more easily affected by the bystander intervention. 3.Both groups of students’ voluntary involvement were not significantly affected by the praise and demerit policy in the program. That is, the Boomerang Effect did not influence their attitudes toward volunteering. 4.Students’ volunteering experiences were an important component of their motivations. 5.Students’ involvement in these mandatory volunteering activities may not have a great impact on their ongoing volunteering in the future. 6.Students’ volunteering did not directly relate to their beliefs of some formal religions, but were linked to the beliefs of traditional Confucianism and the ideas from the media. 7.Students’ religious beliefs and identities were not directly related to their religious attitudes. Suggestions were made from the results of the study, including the necessity of reforms in religious education for high school students, improvements of the mandatory volunteering programs, and aiding students to correctly clarify their religious beliefs and the supernatural ideas expressed by the media. Key words: service-learning, religious beliefs, mandatory volunteerism, motivation to volunteer

The research of factors influencing learning performance on education is an important issue to both practice and study fields, in addition, the mainstream of education type in Taiwan has tended to be Diplomaism for a long time. However, it matters a lot to learning performance, not only the education from school, but also that from family. Therefore, both parents and teachers have paid much attention to additional learning from school (including long-vacation learning and after-school study). The family socioeconomic status may affects the resources for learning, and also results in more expectations from parents, directly or indirectly. On the basis of what we mentioned above, the research is based on pertinent literature and studies and try to make a structure that explains the effects on learning performance of low-grade students. And as the survey completed in 2015 shows, we focus on the following factors: family socioeconomic status, long-vacation learning, after-school study, academic expectation, and educational background expectation; Further we discuss how do those influence the learning performance of the first-grade students of elementary school. The results are as below: (1) The education level of parents has positive effects on their children’ performance. (2) Students that keep studying during long-vacation have better performance. (3) The more they read after class, the better they would perform. (4) The more the parents are educated, the higher possibility that their children would go to cram school during long-vacation, and further contribute to better academic expectation and performance. (5) The more educated the parents are, the more benefits of going to cram schools and reading to their children after school, and further influence their academic expectation and learning performance.

Abstract This study aimed to understand the current leisure behavior types during winter vacation, leisure constraints, and leisure attitudes of sixth grade elementary school students in Keelung City. Differences among students with different background variables in leisure behavior types during winter vacation, leisure constraints, and leisure attitudes as well as the correlations among leisure behavior types during winter vacation, leisure constraints, and leisure attitudes were investigated. Questionnaire survey was adopted. The questionnaire was administered to sixth grade students in public elementary schools in Keelung City using proportionate stratified sampling. A total of 1008 valid responses were collected. Through descriptive analysis, t-test, one-way ANOVA, chi-square test, and Pearson’s product-moment correlation analysis, the following findings were obtained: 1. “Pastime and entertainment” was the major leisure type of the sixth grade students during winter vacation. “Watch TV, movies, DVDs” and “play computer and video games” were the main items they would be engaged in. Their participation in other leisure types was relatively low. Significant differences existed in the participation of leisure types among the sixth grade students with different background variables (gender, socio-economic status of the family, allowance, and offers in red envelope). 2. The main leisure types during Chinese New Year were characterized by “pastime and entertainment” and “social and interpersonal activity”. There were fewer participants in other leisure types during this period of time than during other times of the winter vacation. 3. Leisure constraints encountered by the sixth grade students were low in all aspects and on the whole. “Improper weather condition” was the major structural constraint that also caused the largest obstruction among all the constraints. “Lack of interest” and “absence of a good mood” were the main internal constraints. Besides, obstruction from interpersonal constraints was minimal. 4. The sixth grade students generally held a positive and active attitude toward leisure activities but they participated in these activities to mainly balance their life or have some pastime. Students living in suburban or offshore areas presented a more positive and active leisure attitude than those living in urban areas. Besides, students without allowance also presented a more positive and active leisure attitude than those with allowance. 5. There was a significant and positive correlation between leisure behaviors during winter vacation and leisure attitudes, indicating that a more active leisure attitude could increase leisure behaviors during winter vacation. A significant and negative correlation between leisure attitudes and leisure constraints was found. This revealed that students with a more positive and active leisure attitude would experience less obstruction from leisure constraints. Finally, the correlation between leisure behaviors during winter vacation and leisure constraints was negative. The significance level of this negative correlation depended on the characteristics of each leisure behavior and leisure constraint.
