Abstract:
In response to the recommendation of the Council for Science and Technology (Subdivision on Geodesy and Geophysics), the National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED) constructed a network of stations to observe 11 volcanoes: Tokachidake, Usuzan, Tarumaesan, Hokkaido-Komagatake, Iwatesan, Kusatsu-Shiranesan, Asamayama, Asosan, Kirishimayama, Unzendake, and Kuchinoerabujima. At each new station, a borehole seismograph and tiltmeter, a broadband seismograph, and a GNSS (GPS) were installed. Now, NIED has established 55 stations at 16 volcanoes, adding five volcanoes, namely, Izu- Oshima, Miyakejima, Ogasawara Iwoto, Mt. Fuji and Nasu-dake, and has constructed a new volcano observation network linking the 11 original volcanoes. NIED calls the combination of the new and earlier network the fundamental volcano observation network (V-net).Under a fully open policy, data from the borehole seismographs and tiltmeters, broadband seismographs, rain gauges, barometers, and quartz thermometers in the pressure vessels of the borehole seismographs and tiltmeters are distributed to institutes such as the Japan Meteorological Agency and universities in real time over NIED’s conventional seismic observation data distribution system. GNSS (GPS) data are regularly distributed to relevant research institutes, such as the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan, using file transfer protocol (FTP). In addition, since everyone can use these data for the promotion of volcano research and volcanic disaster prevention, it is now possible to view seismic waves and download data from NIED’s website.

Abstract:
This study examined the scaling relationships of net O2 uptake [V˙o 2(net)= V˙o 2 − restingV˙o 2] to body mass ( M B) and combined mass ( M C= M B + bicycle) during uphill treadmill bicycling. It was hypothesized thatV˙o 2(net)(l/min) would scale proportionally with M C [i.e.,V˙o 2(net)∝ [Formula: see text]] and less than proportionally with M B [i.e.,V˙o 2(net)∝ [Formula: see text]]. Twenty-five competitive cyclists [73.9 ± 8.8 and 85.0 ± 9.0 (SD) kg for M B and M C, respectively] rode their bicycles on a treadmill at 3.46 m/s and grades of 1.7, 3.5, 5.2, and 7.0% whileV˙o 2 was measured. Multiple log-linear regression procedures were applied to the pooledV˙o 2(net)data to determine the exponents for M C and M B after statistically controlling for differences in treadmill grade and dynamic friction. The regression models were highly significant ( R 2 = 0.95, P < 0.001). Exponents for M C (0.99, 95% confidence interval = 0.80–1.18) and M B (0.89, 95% confidence interval = 0.72–1.07) did not differ significantly from each other or 1.0. It was concluded that the 0.99 M C exponent was due to gravitational resistance, whereas the M B exponent was <1.0 because the bicycles were relatively lighter for heavier cyclists.

Abstract:
In October 2020, the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU), sitting as a Grand Chamber, handed down its preliminary rulings in Privacy International v. Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs (Privacy International) and in the joined cases of La Quadrature du Net v. Premier ministre and Ordre des barreaux francophones et germanophone v. Conseil des ministers (La Quadrature du Net). In Privacy International, the CJEU held that member states are precluded from enacting laws enabling bulk transmission of communications data from providers to the state. In La Quadrature du Net, it laid down requirements for various types of data processing, including bulk and targeted retention and automated analysis, and held for the first time that bulk retention of communications data could be justified on national security grounds. The judgments represent a significant development of the CJEU's jurisprudence on communications data processing and state surveillance, as the European Union (EU) continues to move towards a new digital privacy law.

Abstract:
Kidney tumors represent a type of cancer that people of advanced age are more likely to develop. For this reason, it is important to exercise caution and provide diagnostic tests in the later stages of life. Medical imaging and deep learning methods are becoming increasingly attractive in this sense. Developing deep learning models to help physicians identify tumors with successful segmentation is of great importance. However, not many successful systems exist for soft tissue organs, such as the kidneys and the prostate, of which segmentation is relatively difficult. In such cases where segmentation is difficult, V-Net-based models are mostly used. This paper proposes a new hybrid model using the superior features of existing V-Net models. The model represents a more successful system with improvements in the encoder and decoder phases not previously applied. We believe that this new hybrid V-Net model could help the majority of physicians, particularly those focused on kidney and kidney tumor segmentation. The proposed model showed better performance in segmentation than existing imaging models and can be easily integrated into all systems due to its flexible structure and applicability. The hybrid V-Net model exhibited average Dice coefficients of 97.7% and 86.5% for kidney and tumor segmentation, respectively, and, therefore, could be used as a reliable method for soft tissue organ segmentation.

Abstract:
Volume of interest segmentation is an essential step in computer-aided detection and diagnosis (CAD) systems. Deep learning (DL)-based methods provide good performance for prostate segmentation, but little is known about the reproducibility of these methods. In this work, an in-house collected dataset from 244 patients was used to investigate the intra-patient reproducibility of 14 shape features for DL-based segmentation methods of the whole prostate gland (WP), peripheral zone (PZ), and the remaining prostate zones (non-PZ) on T2-weighted (T2W) magnetic resonance (MR) images compared to manual segmentations. The DL-based segmentation was performed using three different convolutional neural networks (CNNs): V-Net, nnU-Net-2D, and nnU-Net-3D. The two-way random, single score intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) was used to measure the inter-scan reproducibility of each feature for each CNN and the manual segmentation. We found that the reproducibility of the investigated methods is comparable to manual for all CNNs (14/14 features), except for V-Net in PZ (7/14 features). The ICC score for segmentation volume was found to be 0.888, 0.607, 0.819, and 0.903 in PZ; 0.988, 0.967, 0.986, and 0.983 in non-PZ; 0.982, 0.975, 0.973, and 0.984 in WP for manual, V-Net, nnU-Net-2D, and nnU-Net-3D, respectively. The results of this work show the feasibility of embedding DL-based segmentation in CAD systems, based on multiple T2W MR scans of the prostate, which is an important step towards the clinical implementation.

Abstract:
We propose a general approach to nets and structures in which vertices represent stereochemically significant groups or clusters of atoms, and edges represent the linkage between these groups. Vertices may be single atoms, dimers, coordination polyhedra, clusters of atoms or clusters of coordination polyhedra; edges may be single chemical bonds or sets of several chemical bonds. Thus, a single net may be the basis for a family of structures that are homeomorphic to that net. The coordination of polyhedra or units around a vertex is visualized by connecting the centres of the atoms or groups at the vertices connected with the central vertex. Thus, the concept of coordination number is extended to include coordinating groups. We name a net after a homeomorphic simple structure-type for which there is a one-to-one correspondence between the vertices of the net and specific atoms of the structure, and between the edges of the net and the chemical bonds. We term the resulting more complex structures metastructures in order to distinguish them from their corresponding simple structure-types. Individual metastructures are referred to as alpha structures similar to a particular simple type. Thus, the open complex framework of [V5O9(PO4)2] composition in microporous Na v [((V^{4+}_{4-w}V^{5+}_{1+w})O9)(PO4)2]·(PO4) x ·(OH) y ·zH2O is an α-NbO structure based on the simple net that is homeomorphic to NbO. This approach is effective in hierarchically classifying both simple close-packed structures and very complicated microporous structures.

Abstract:
1. Blood from chronic indwelling catheters in the caudal aorta and anterior mesenteric, gastrosplenic and hepatic portal veins was used to measure blood flow and net flux of oxygen, glucose and nitrogenous compounds across hepatic portal-drained viscera (PDV), post-stomach (anterior mesenteric-drained viscera (MDV)) and stomach tissues of two beef steers (390 kg mean live weight).2. Steers were fed in sequence on (1) chopped lucerne (Medicago sativa) hay (twelve meals/d), (2) chopped lucerne hay (two meals/d) and (3) a pelleted concentrate diet containing 780 g ground maize/kg (two meals/d). The lucerne hay and concentrate contained 26.5 and 16.8 g nitrogen/kg respectively.3. Five measurements of net flux (blood flow multiplied by venous-arterial concentration differences (VA)) were obtained hourly on 2 d for each dietary regimen, beginning 0.5 h before feeding at 08.00 hours. Blood flow was measured by downstream dilution of p-aminohippurate (PAH).4. Blood flow across MDV averaged 42% of PDV blood flow (665 litres/h).5. Net use of O2 across MDV accounted for 51 % of net PDV use of O2 (920 mmol/h). This disproportionate use of O2 in relation to blood flow was due to greater VA for O2 across MDV than across stomach tissues. Dietary regimen had no effect on the proportions of PDV blood flow and net O2 consumption attributable to MDV or stomach tissues.6. When lucerne was given, net glucose use across MDV represented 69% of PDV use (35 mmol/h). When concentrate was given, MDV glucose use switched to net absorption (29 mmol/h), reducing net PDV glucose use to I mmol/h.7. When concentrate was given, net MDV absorption of α-amino-N (AAN) increased from 98 to 190 mmol/h, yet net PDV absorption (101 mmol/h) was not affected. Net stomach AAN flux increased from -7 to -69 mmol/h when concentrate was given, negating the increase in net MDV absorption.8. Net absorption of ammonia-N across MDV represented 28 and 52% of net PDV absorption when lucerne and concentrate were given respectively. Net NH3-N absorption across PDV was lower when lucerne was given than when concentrate was given (295 v. 154 mmol/h), reflecting lower dietary N intake (153 v. 83 g/d). Net MDV absorption of NH3-N was not affected by diet. Net removal of blood urea-N (BUN) across PDV (101 mmol/h) was not affected by diet. Across MDV, BUN removal was lower when concentrate was given than when lucerne was given (32 v. 77 mmol/h). In beef steers, MDV tissues account for substantial portions of net flux of non-protein-N across PDV and are responsible for essentially all PDV absorption of AAN.

Abstract:
AbstractUnderstanding the mechanisms underlying net ecosystem CO2 exchange (NEE) in mountain grasslands is important to quantify their relevance in the global carbon budget. However, complex interactions between environmental variables and vegetation on NEE remain unclear; and there is a lack of empirical data, especially from the high elevations and the Mediterranean region. A chamber-based survey of CO2 exchange measurements was carried out in two climatically contrasted grasslands (montane v. subalpine) of the Pyrenees; assessing the relative contribution of phenology and environmental variables on CO2 exchange at the seasonal scale, and the influence of plant functional type dominance (grasses, forbs and legumes) on the NEE light response. Results show that phenology plays a crucial role as a CO2 exchange driver, suggesting a differential behaviour of the vegetation community depending on the environment. The subalpine grassland had a more delayed phenology compared to the montane, being more temperature than water constrained. However, temperature increased net CO2 uptake at a higher rate in the subalpine than in the montane grassland. During the peak biomass, productivity (+74%) and net CO2 uptake (NEE +48%) were higher in the subalpine grassland than in the montane grassland. The delayed phenology at the subalpine grassland reduced vegetation's sensitivity to summer dryness, and CO2 exchange fluxes were less constrained by low soil water content. The NEE light response suggested that legume dominated plots had higher net CO2 uptake per unit of biomass than grasses. Detailed information on phenology and vegetation composition is essential to understand elevation and climatic differences in CO2 exchange.

Abstract:

Abstract:
We evaluated the hypotheses that alterations in glucose disposal rate (Rd) due to endurance training are the result of changed net glucose uptake by active muscle and that blood glucose is shunted to working muscle during exercise requiring high relative power output. We studied leg net glucose uptake during 1 h of cycle ergometry at two intensities before training [45 and 65% of peak rate of oxygen consumption (V˙o 2 peak)] and after training [65% pretrainingV˙o 2 peak, same absolute workload (ABT), and 65% posttrainingV˙o 2 peak, same relative workload (RLT)]. Nine male subjects (178.1 ± 2.5 cm, 81.8 ± 3.3 kg, 27.4 ± 2.0 yr) were tested before and after 9 wk of cycle ergometer training, five times a week at 75%V˙o 2 peak. The power output that elicited 66.0 ± 1.1% ofV˙o 2 peak before training elicited 54.0 ± 1.7% after training. Whole body glucose Rd decreased posttraining at ABT (5.45 ± 0.31 mg ⋅ kg−1 ⋅ min−1at 65% pretraining to 4.36 ± 0.44 mg ⋅ kg−1 ⋅ min−1) but not at RLT (5.94 ± 0.47 mg ⋅ kg−1 ⋅ min−1). Net glucose uptake was attenuated posttraining at ABT (1.87 ± 0.42 mmol/min at 65% pretraining and 0.54 ± 0.33 mmol/min) but not at RLT (2.25 ± 0.81 mmol/min). The decrease in leg net glucose uptake at ABT was of similar magnitude as the drop in glucose Rd and thus could explain dampened glucose flux after training. Glycogen degradation also decreased posttraining at ABT but not RLT. Leg net glucose uptake accounted for 61% of blood glucose flux before training and 81% after training at the same relative (65%V˙o 2 peak) workload and only 38% after training at ABT. We conclude that 1) alterations in active muscle glucose uptake with training determine changes in whole body glucose kinetics; 2) muscle glucose uptake decreases for a given, moderate intensity task after training; and 3) hard exercise (65%V˙o 2 peak) promotes a glucose shunt from inactive tissues to active muscle.

Density Functional Theory and Complete Active Space Self-Consistent Field (CASSCF) methodologies are used to explore the electronic structure of the cationic V–N clusters, [V4N4]+ and [V6N6]+, that have been identified in recent mass spectrometric experiments. Our calculations indicate that both clusters are based on cubane-like fragments of the rock-salt lattice. In the smaller [V4N4]+ cluster, the V–V bonding is delocalized over the tetrahedron, with net bond orders of 1/3 per V–V bond. In [V6N6]+, in contrast, the V–V bonding is strongly localized in the central V2N2 unit, which has a short V=V double bond. CASSCF calculations reveal that both localized and delocalized V–V bonds are highly multi-configurational.

Abstract:
The force-velocity relationship has frequently been used to predict the shortening velocity that muscles should use to generate maximal net power output. Such predictions ignore other well-characterized intrinsic properties of the muscle, such as the length-force relationship and the kinetics of activation and deactivation (relaxation). We examined the effects of relative shortening velocity on the maximum net power output (over the entire cycle) of mouse soleus muscle, using sawtooth strain trajectories over a range of cycle frequencies. The strain trajectory was varied such that the proportion of the cycle spent shortening was 25, 50 or 75 % of the total cycle duration. A peak isotonic power output of 167 W kg-1 was obtained at a relative shortening velocity (V/Vmax) of 0.22. Over the range of cyclical contractions studied, the optimal V/Vmax for power production ranged almost fourfold from 0.075 to 0.30, with a maximum net power output of 94 W kg-1. The net power output increased as the proportion of the cycle spent shortening increased. Under conditions where the strain amplitude was high (i.e. low cycle frequencies and strain trajectories where the proportion of time spent shortening was greater than that spent lengthening), the effects of the length-force relationship reduced the optimal V/Vmax below that predicted from the force-velocity curve. At high cycle frequencies and also for strain trajectories with brief shortening periods, higher rates of activation and deactivation with increased strain rate shifted the optimal V/Vmax above that predicted from the force-velocity relationship. Thus, the force-velocity relationship alone does not accurately predict the optimal V/Vmax for maximum power production in muscles that operate over a wide range of conditions (e.g. red muscle of fish). The change in the rates of activation and deactivation with increasing velocity of stretch and shortening, respectively, made it difficult to model force accurately on the basis of the force-velocity and length-force relationships and isometric activation and deactivation kinetics. The discrepancies between the modelled and measured forces were largest at high cycle frequencies.

Abstract:
A comparison was made among 16 native North American Vitis species and Vitis vinifera L. ('Carignane') grown in the San Joaquin Valley of California with or without irrigation over 2 years. Predawn water potential (ΨPD), predawn leaf osmotic potential (Ψπ), midday leaf (Ψl), and stem water potential (Ψstem), stomatal conductance (gs), net CO2 assimilation rate (A), and intrinsic water use efficiency (WUE) were measured on five dates during the growing season the first year of the study and pruning weights were evaluated both years. Net gas exchange and water potential components taken on the last measurement date in 1992 and pruning weights of the nonirrigated species were less (or more negative for Ψ components) than those of the irrigated vines. The 17 Vitis species were ranked according to their relative drought tolerance based upon their performance without irrigation and when compared to their irrigated cohort. The Vitis species considered most drought tolerant were V. californica, V. champinii, V. doaniana, V. longii, V. girdiana, and V. arizonica. Those six species generally had high values of A, gs, and pruning weights and more favorable vine water status at the end of the study than the other species when grown without irrigation. The drought-induced reductions in the measured parameters also were less for those species when compared to their irrigated cohorts. The least drought tolerant species were, V. berlandieri, V. cinerea, V. lincecumii, V. riparia, and V. solonis. The drought-tolerant rankings were generally associated with the species' native habitat and probable soil water availability.

Abstract:
The Schottky barrier height (SBH) of Al, Ti, Au, and Ni contacts to n- and p-type 3C-SiC is investigated by means of I-V and C-V measurements. All metal contacts to n- (net donor concentration: 1.0 x 1016 /cm3) and p-type (net acceptor concentration: 4 x 1016 /cm3) 3C-SiC show the rectifying I-V characteristics except for Al contact to n-type 3C-SiC. Only Al contact to n-type 3C-SiC shows the ohmic characteristics. As the work function of metal is increased from 4.3 (Ti) to 5.2 (Ni) eV, SBH for n-type 3C-SiC is increased from 0.4 to 0.7 eV and SBH for p-type 3C-SiC is decreased from 2.2 to 1.8 eV. The small change of SBH for 3C-SiC may be correlated to the crystal orientation and the defects on the surface of 3C-SiC.

Abstract:
In an effort to maximize early return on investment and labor efficiency, cling peach growers in California are using two different types of high-density plantings; the perpendicular-V (1.8m × 4.8m = 930 Trees/ha), and the cordon (2.4m × 4.2m = 925 Trees/ha). The V has the advantage of being more traditional in its establishment, where the cordon has the advantage of higher yields and no need for wires, props or ladders to prune, thin and pick. This study evaluated the cultural and economic considerations of the two systems with respect to their yields during the orchards' establishment years. The cumulative labor costs, specific to the style of training for the first 3 years was $1258 and $901 per hectare for the cordon and V respectively. Cumulative yields were 40.4 tons/ha for the cordon and 22.0 tons/ha for the V. When contrasting the net returns per hectare, the cordon, in spite of its higher labor input (due largely to higher thinning and harvest costs), had a net profit advantage of $3362.50 per hectare during the first 3 years of establishment.

Abstract:
Renal clearance studies were performed on anesthetized sea snakes (Aipysurus laevis) under various salt and volume loads. The median values for the control glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and urine flow rate (V) were 0.78 and 0.11 ml X kg-1 X h-1, respectively. Acute salt loading with 1 mol/l NaCl significantly increased V to 0.68 ml X kg-1 X h-1, whereas acute water loading significantly decreased GFR to 0.17 ml X kg-1 X h-1. Acute loading with either isosmotic NaCl or seawater did not significantly alter either V or GFR. Chronic loading with water or seawater by intraperitoneal injection significantly increased both GFR and V. No consistent relationship between plasma osmolality and GFR was observed. Instead a threshold-type relationship existed between GFR and plasma K concentration. Within each treatment group, high plasma K concentrations were correlated with low GFRs. There was an abrupt increase in GFR at low plasma K concentrations, the inflection point ranging from 2.5 to 4 mmol/l K depending on the experimental treatment. A curvilinear relationship existed between V and GFR; as GFR increased, V approached a maximal limiting value. At low GFRs (less than 0.2 ml X kg-1 X h-1), V often exceeded GFR, indicating net fluid secretion that was correlated with net Na movement. In addition, there was an inverse relationship between urine-to-plasma osmolality ratio and V. At low values of V, urine osmolalities modestly exceeded those of the plasma. Overall, renal function of A. laevis appears to be adapted to conserve water.

Abstract:
Proton fluxes were measured non-invasively on patch-clamped protoplasts isolated from wheat roots using an external H + electrode to measure the electrochemical gradient in the external solution. Under voltage clamp in the whole-cell configuration, the H + fluxes across the plasma membrane could be measured as a function of voltage and time and correlated with the simultaneous measurements of membrane current. Protoplasts could exist in three states based on the current–voltage (I–V) curves and the flux–V curves. In the pump-state where the membrane voltage (Vm) was more negative than the electrochemical equilibrium potential for potassium (E K ), a net efflux of H + occurred that was voltage-dependent such that the efflux increased as Vm was clamped more positive. In the K-state, where Vm was close to E K , similar flux–V curves were observed. In the depolarised state where Vm was greater than E K the proton flux was characterised by a net influx of H + (H + -influx state) that reversed direction at more positive values of Vm. The inhibitory effect of DCCD and stimulatory effect of fusicoccin were used to correlate current and H + flux through the H + -ATPase for which there was reasonably good agreement within the limits of the flux measurements. Some protoplasts were kept in the whole-cell configuration for up to 3 h revealing slow sustained oscillations (period about 40 min) in H + flux that were in phase with oscillations in free-running Vm. These oscillations were also observed under voltage clamp, with membrane current in phase with H + flux, but which became damped out after a few cycles. The oscillations encompassed the pump-state, K + -state and H + -influx-state. The H +- flux–V curves and I–V curves were used to model the electrical characteristics of the plasma membrane with H + -ATPase, inward and outward K + rectifiers, a linear conductance, and a passive H + influx possibly through gated proton channels.

Abstract:
Ammonia stimulates cortical collecting duct (CCD) net bicarbonate reabsorption by activating an apical H+-K+-ATPase through mechanisms that are independent of ammonia's known effects on intracellular pH and active sodium transport. The present studies examined whether this stimulation occurs through soluble N-ethylmaleimide-sensitive fusion attachment receptor (SNARE) protein-mediated vesicle fusion. Rabbit CCD segments were studied using in vitro microperfusion, and transepithelial bicarbonate transport was measured using microcalorimetry. Ammonia's stimulation of bicarbonate reabsorption was blocked by either chelating intracellular calcium with 1,2-bis(2-aminophenoxy)ethane- N,N,N',N'-tetraacetic acid acetoxymethyl ester or by inhibiting microtubule polymerization with colchicine compared with parallel studies performed in the absence of these inhibitors. An inactive structural analog of colchicine, lumicolchicine, did not alter ammonia's stimulation of bicarbonate reabsorption. Tetanus toxin, a zinc endopeptidase specific for vesicle-associated SNARE (v-SNARE) proteins, prevented ammonia from stimulating net bicarbonate reabsorption. Consistent with the functional evidence for v-SNARE involvement, antibodies directed against a conserved region of isoforms 1–3 of the tetanus toxin-sensitive, vesicle-associated membrane protein (VAMP) members of v-SNARE proteins labeled the apical and subapical region of collecting duct intercalated cells. Similarly, antibodies to NSF protein, a protein involved in activation of SNARE proteins for subsequent vesicle fusion, localized to the apical and subapical region of collecting duct intercalated cells. These results indicate that ammonia stimulates CCD bicarbonate reabsorption through an intracellular calcium-dependent, microtubule-dependent, and v-SNARE-dependent mechanism that appears to involve insertion of cytoplasmic vesicles into the apical plasma membrane of CCD intercalated cells.

Abstract:
To evaluate the hypothesis that endurance training increases intramuscular triglyceride (IMTG) oxidation, we studied leg net free fatty acid (FFA) and glycerol exchange during 1 h of cycle ergometry at two intensities before training [45 and 65% of peak rate of oxygen consumption (V˙o 2 peak)] and after training [65% pretrainingV˙o 2 peak, same absolute workload (ABT), and 65% posttrainingV˙o 2 peak, same relative intensity (RLT)]. Nine male subjects (178.1 ± 2.5 cm, 81.8 ± 3.3 kg, 27.4 ± 2.0 yr) were tested before and after 9 wk of cycle ergometer training, five times per week at 75%V˙o 2 peak. The power output that elicited 66.1 ± 1.1% ofV˙o 2 peak before training elicited 54.0 ± 1.7% after training due to a 14.6 ± 3.1% increase inV˙o 2 peak. Training significantly ( P < 0.05) decreased pulmonary respiratory exchange ratio (RER) values at ABT (0.96 ± 0.01 at 65% pre- vs. 0.93 ± 0.01 posttraining) but not RLT (0.95 ± 0.01). After training, leg respiratory quotient (RQ) was not significantly different at either ABT (0.98 ± 0.02 pre- vs. 0.98 ± 0.03 posttraining) or RLT (1.01 ± 0.02). Net FFA uptake was increased at RLT but not ABT after training. FFA fractional extraction was not significantly different after training or at any exercise intensity. Net glycerol release, and therefore IMTG lipolysis calculated from three times net glycerol release, did not change from rest to exercise or at ABT but decreased at the same RLT after training. Muscle biopsies revealed minor muscle triglyceride changes during exercise. Simultaneous measurements of leg RQ, net FFA uptake, and glycerol release by working legs indicated no change in leg FFA oxidation, FFA uptake, or IMTG lipolysis during leg cycling exercise that elicits 65% pre- and 54% posttrainingV˙o 2 peak. Training increases working muscle FFA uptake at 65%V˙o 2 peak, but high RER and RQ values at all work intensities indicate that FFA and IMTG are of secondary importance as fuels in moderate and greater-intensity exercise.

Abstract:
With positron emission tomography, quantitative measurements of regional alveolar and mixed venous concentrations of positron-emitting radioisotopes can be made within a transaxial section through the thorax. This allows the calculation of regional ventilation-to-perfusion (V/Q) ratios by use of established tracer dilution theory and the constant intravenous infusion of 13N. This paper considers the effect of the inspiration of dead-space gas on regional V/Q and investigates the relationship between the measured V/Q, physiological V/Q, and V/Q defined conventionally in terms of bulk gas flow (VA/Q). Ventilation has been described in terms of net gas transport, and the term effective ventilation has been introduced. A simple two-compartment model has been constructed to allow for the reinspiration of regional (or personal) and common dead-space gas. By use of this model, with parameters representative of normal lung the effective V/Q ratio for 13N [(VA/Q)eff(13N)] is shown to overestimate VA/Q by 18% when VA/Q = 0.1 but underestimate VA/Q by 68% when VA/Q = 10. For physiological gases, the model predicts that the behavior of O2 should be similar to that of 13N, so that, in terms of gas transport, V/Q ratios obtained using the infusion of 13N closely follow those for O2. Values of the effective V/Q ratio for CO2 [(VA/Q)eff(CO2)] lie approximately halfway between (VA/Q)eff(13N) and VA/Q. These results indicate that dead-space ventilation is far less a confounding issue when V/Q is considered in terms of net gas transport (VAeff), rather than bulk flow (VA).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract:
The paper overviews the basic ideas of the book by N. V. Smorodinskaya. It focuses on some definite as well as still not so definite changes in world pubic and economic structures. The main vector of the research is reorganization of today’s pubic and economic structures and establishing a net structure on this basis. The author follows these processes beginning with the first steps of forming a net structure. She examines the logic of changes of rigid hierarchical models of management and coordination of the free market for horizontal and net forms of organization. A new institutional space rests upon developed net interactions. Two main trends are in the focus of the author’s attention. First, collaboration phenomenon on all the levels of economy including so called “triple helix”, i.e., collaboration of the state, science and business. Second, cluster nets, i.e., orga- nization and management of collaboration. The cluster-net approach in industrial policy all over the world and topicality of such approach for modernization of Russian economy are presented in the monograph too.

The need for extend the urban horticulture to cover the food security demands, to mitigate CO2 emissions and avoid the extreme heat waves drive this study to investigate the ability of using soilless culture systems, vermicomposting technology and net cover in producing vegetables in urban area in summer season. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of different vermicompost rates mixed with the standard substrate peat moss: perlite (perlite: peat moss: vermicompost (45:45:10) (Mix.10%), perlite: peat moss: vermicompost (40:40:20) (Mix.20%), perlite: peat moss: vermicompost (35:35:30) (Mix.30%) and perlite: peat moss (50:50 V/V) (Control) under three microclimate conditions (plants covered with black net, white net and without cover) on vegetative growth and yield of sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum L. cv. Reda) grown in pots culture during summer seasons of 2012 and 2013 at the Central Laboratory for Agricultural Climate, Agricultural Research Center, Dokki, Giza Governorate. Physical and chemical properties of substrates, vegetative growth and yield characteristics, agrometerological data and mineral contents were determined. The obtained data indicated that vermicomposting could contribute in mitigate CO2 emission, save the essential nutrients and energy via recycling the urban organic wastes to vermicompost. The physical and chemical properties were affected by vermicompost. The best vegetative growth and yield of sweet pepper were given by (Mix.20%) vermicompost mixture followed by (Mix.10%) and (Mix.30%) vermicompost mixture. There were also significant differences between cover net treatments in affecting vegetative growth and yield of pepper, the white net was superior for producing pepper during the summer season; while the black net gave the lowest plant growth and yield. The best treatment was (Mix.20%) vermicompost mixture with white net cover, while the lowest vegetative growth and yield were obtained by (Control) vermicompost mixture with black cover net during the two tested seasons. These results suggested that vermicomposting and green roof can be used in urban area for producing food instead of incineration the urban organic wastes or imported food from rural area and using white cover net to improve the pepper growth and productivity during summer season.

Abstract:
Statins not only have a lipid-lowering effect but also reduce inflammation and have an antithrombotic effect. Since hypercoagulability assessed by thrombin generation assay (TGA) and increased formation of neutrophil extracellular traps (NET) were demonstrated in diabetes, we investigated whether statin therapy in diabetes modifies coagulation status and NET formation. Twenty-five consecutive patients with diabetes were recruited. Global coagulation assays (prothrombin time [PT], activated partial thromboplastin time [aPTT], and TGA) and NET markers (DNA–histone complex, cell-free DNA, and neutrophil elastase) were measured before and after 3-month moderate-intensity statin therapy. In addition, all coagulation factors and 3 anticoagulation factors were measured. Statin therapy significantly reduced endogenous thrombin potential (ETP) value and blood lipids but did not change the PT and aPTT values or NET formation markers. Statin significantly decreased not only coagulation factors (II, V, VIII, IX, and X) but also the anticoagulation factor antithrombin. Statin-induced reduction of factor V and X significantly contributed to the reduction of ETP value. The extent of reduction in coagulation factors correlated with that of anticoagulation factors, but not that of cholesterol. It is possible to use TGA as a global coagulation assay that can detect coagulation status modified by statin therapy. Additional studies are needed to evaluate the clinical implications of statin-induced simultaneous reduction of coagulation and anticoagulation factors.

The models show that this can be successfully done and the Petri nets that are generated in this work are suitable for visualisation. Graph visualisation is an important topic and the results show that there is a large potential to apply this approach to drawing Petri Nets in novel ways.

Abstract:
Straipsnyje nagrinėjamas užklasinis skaitymas biologijos tema, duomenys surinkti iš 23 Lietuvos TSR mokyklų ir 4 vaikų bibliotekų. Nagrinėjamas 1960-1962 m. laikotarpis. Straipsnio tikslas – pagalba biologijos mokytojams, parenkant užklasinius skaitinius. Knygų fondai pildomi lėtai ir be plano.

Abstract:
The electronic and phononic properties of V2AlC have been extensively studied using ab initio pseudopotential density functional theory. Our investigations revealed that the longest V–V bond and its least variations have led to the stiffer c axis. The nearly unchanged net charge of the C atom under pressure has led to nearly unchanged overlapped populations along the C–V bond. The obvious charge transfer of V → Al has induced significant variations of the overlapped populations along Al–V and V–V bonds. An anomalous variation of charge transfer between V and Al atoms and V–V bond populations at about 700 GPa has been revealed, which may relate to its structural instability at about 731 GPa. Previously calculated structural instability at about 731 GPa has been successfully confirmed by the present phonon dispersion curve. The bonding natures are also studied by the electron density difference, electron density of states, and the energy band structure.

Abstract:
Objective To perform a cross sectional analysis in 71 patients on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) to identify significant correlations of weekly small solute clearances and indices of nutritional status with each other and with patient demographics and other commonly monitored clinical and laboratory parameters. Design This was a retrospective, cross sectional analysis in 71 patients on CAPD from less than 1 to 105 patient-months (average, 20 months). Setting An outpatient CAPD program. Patients All patients on CAPD in our program at the time of the study willing to undergo the clearance and nutritional status measurements. Interventions No interventions other than the monitoring of their status. Main Outcome Measures Weekly small solute clearances, dietary protein intake, serum albumin, lean body mass, net protein catabolic rate, and urinary and dialysate nitrogen. Results Weekly K/V urea (weekly urea clearance normalized to total body water) of at least 1.7 and weekly total creatinine clearances (liter/week/1.7 m2) of at least 50 are associated with net protein catabolic rates (PCR) greater than 0.9 g/kg of normalized body weight in average CAPD patients. K/V urea and net PCR correlate significantly with serum albumin. High transporters identified by the peritoneal equilibration test have greater albumin losses and lower serum albumin concentrations. Estimates of lean body mass correlate significantly with serum albumin and net PCR; lean body mass correlates significantly and inversely with age. Conclusions Greater small solute clearances are associated with better nutritional status.

Abstract:
In situ hybridization was performed on sections of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) gill tissue using oligonucleotide probes complementary to the mRNA of the 31-kilodalton subunit of the bovine renal V-type H+-ATPase or rat kidney Band 3 anion exchanger ([Formula: see text] exchanger). This was conducted in conjunction with measurements of whole-body net acid fluxes and blood acid–base status during imposed conditions of respiratory acidosis (external hypercapnia) or metabolic alkalosis (NaHCO3 infusion). A positive hybridization signal for the H+-ATPase mRNA was localized predominantly in lamellar epithelial cells and was less apparent in cells associated with the filament or interlamellar regions. The H+-ATPase hybridization signal was enhanced during hypercapnic acidosis concurrently with a marked increase in whole-body net acid excretion. A positive hybridization signal for the [Formula: see text] exchanger mRNA was observed in epithelial cells on both the filament and lamella. During metabolic alkalosis induced by intra-arterial infusion of NaHCO3, there was a marked increase in the [Formula: see text] exchanger mRNA hybridization signal in cells on both the filament and lamella that occurred concurrently with a decrease in net acid excretion. The results of this study support the existence of a V-type H+-ATPase and a [Formula: see text] exchanger in rainbow trout gill epithelial cells and demonstrate that alterations in gene expression for the pump–exchanger may be a significant mechanism underlying the altered rates of net acid equivalent excretion during acid – base disturbances.
