Full textThe evaluation of a project and its economic and financial viability are frequently calculated using the discounted cash flow method. However, the fact that a project is financially feasible doesn´t necessarily means that it reflects the preferences of the stakeholders. Besides this, the discounted cash flow method isn´t capable of valuing projects with relevant qualitative aspects. In order to try to capture these significant aspects, an appraisal methodology such as Multi-criteria analysis (MCA) is required. This article describes a project selection process made by an Investment Committee (IC)in a power utility firm using a multi-criteria analysis method, the MAPM (Mutiattribute Preference Model), and how these quantitative and qualitative criteria can play a relevant role for the project selection decision. We study the decision process by first asking the IC members to attribute weights for both objectives (two) and criteria (seven), in order to access the utility function of each IC member and then analyzing the behavior and consistency of the decisions produced through calculation of the score of each project. Results indicate that there is consistency between the strategy defined by the firm and the project selection process. Additionally, the results obtained with the MAPM approach were compared with these obtained using another MCA methodology: the AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process), which yields similar results. The results also show that the application of multi-criteria analysis in a real context of a power utility firm can play a relevant role on capital investment valuation and decision tacking process.

Full textNi-Co alloys are used in shielding of leading edge of helicopter blades, due to their good corrosion and wear resistance, mechanical strength and magnetic properties. These binary alloys form a solid solution with a face-centered cubic structure when the cobalt content is less than about 70 %. The study materials Ni, Ni-20Co and Ni-50Co were produced by fusion, before undergoing cold rolling deformation, and annealing at 850 °C. They are characterized by a microstructure with a grain size between 5 and 14 µm, a high fraction of Σ3 boundaries, a low stress state and an absence of texture. The observation of the microstructural evolution during annealing made it possible to determine the kinetics of recrystallization and to identify the Cube texture as a limiting factor. The electroformed, nanocrystalline industrial alloy Ni-20Co was also examined, and its grain size was increased to resemble the model material. Corrosion properties were studied in two electrolytes (30 g/L NaCl and 0.5 M H2SO4) to determine the impact of composition and microstructural parameters on corrosion resistance and passivation mechanisms. Potentiodynamic polarization curves showed the passive character of nickel rich samples, and revealed the detrimental influence of cobalt. However, a composition similar to that of the industrial alloy does not significantly degrade the corrosion performance. A high density of grain boundaries, a large fraction of twin boundaries, or a (111) orientation, are identified as beneficial microstructural parameters for corrosion resistance. A higher susceptibility to pitting, due to Cl- ions, is observed for the industrial alloy, certainly related to the electroforming process. Finally, the model materials exhibit an active-passive behaviour, typical of nickel alloys in an acidic medium. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and Mott-Schottky tests enable to characterize the electrochemical and semiconductor properties of the passive layers. The different results seem to converge towards a less efficient passivity linked to an increasing fraction of cobalt in solid solution

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In South Africa few systematic studies have been done on university-industry partnerships. This research investigated the evolution of the University of Cape Town (UCT) and SASOL partnership involving heterogeneous catalysis. As part of this investigation, I analysed the driving force and sought to determine the motivations and benefits that UCT and SASOL have since accrued as a result of their partnership. I also analysed knowledge transmission or technology transfer processes such as the hiring of graduates, intellectual property etc. In light of all of these I sought to draw lessons that could be learnt from UCT-SASOL partnership for future purpose. I followed four themes or sections in order to situate the study. These were, (a) the socio-economic context (global and knowledge economy, innovation, knowledge society etc.), the changing modes of knowledge production ("Mode 2") and the changing ways of interactions among stakeholders industry, university and government (Triple Helix). The key argument here is that the university industry partnership cannot be seen as an independent development, but is interrelated or partly the consequence of changes in the socio-economic, science, technology and higher education fields, (b) The driving force behind the partnership, (c) motivations, benefits, and (d) knowledge or technology transfer/transmission processes. I used the case study research design. I conducted interviews with the UCT Chemical Engineering Department, UCT Centre for Research and Innovation and SASOL officials. I collected several documents related to the study and also visited the laboratories in which UCT-SASOL partnership research activities were happening. Some of the findings of the study include the following. The partnership demonstrates the significant role of an individual academic, who steered transformation in terms of research activities and culture in the Chemical Engineering Department. The legacy of the individual academic's strong personality and commitment to research is evident and continues to stimulate high levels of research interest and teamwork among staff members which is characteristic of this department. A strong link is maintained between the basic disciplinary "Mode 1" teaching and research on the one hand and the multidisciplinary "Mode 2" applied and strategic research and training on the other: This is evident in the strong emphasis on the solid undergraduate disciplinary education as a basis for a high quality multidisciplinary postgraduate education. All staff members are involved in both teaching and research. A strong link is maintained between academic, research and postgraduate activities: The department utilizes surpluses generated through industrial-oriented research to cross-subsidize the academic and postgraduate activities.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Daar is weinig sistemiese studies in Suid-Afrika reeds uitgevoer oor universiteit-industrie samewerking. Alle personeel is betrokke by beide onderrig en navorsing. 'n Sterk skakel is behou tussen akademiese, navorsings- en nagraadse aktiwiteite: die departement gebruik die oorskotte van industrieverwante navorsing om akademiese en nagraadse aktiwiteite te kruissubsideer.

Full textThrombosis occurring after implantation of a biomaterial in contact with blood is amajor problem. The use of polymers as supports for vascular grafts or as cover materials for stents may improve their hemocompatibility. It is in this context that the overall objective of this thesis is to study the biocompatibility of polyurethanes, called D-PHI (Degradable-Polar /Hydrophobic / Ionic). For this study, 2 formulations were developed, the original formula called O-D-PHI and the formulation HHHI (High Hydrophobic, High Ionic). They consist of the same monomers whose molar ratios vary, thus making it possible to modulate the polar, ionic and hydrophobic characteristics of the material. The influence of the intrinsic chemistry of these materials on the adsorption and availability of specific plasma protein sequences (fibronectin and immunoglobulin G) and in regards to the activation of monocytes has been studied. In order to covering stent, micrometric thin films of polyurethanes were generated at the surface of cobalt chrome and surface characterization was performed. The adsorption and availability of specific plasma protein sequences, involved in inflammation and coagulation, were then evaluated as well as the reactivity of blood cells. The results showed that the formulation and film thickness influence the adsorption and exposure of specific plasma protein sequences. In contrast, blood cell reactivity, coagulation activation, and inflammation were reduced by the presence of thin polyurethane films, regardless of film thickness and formulation

Full textThis thesis addresses the performance of the KNX-RF protocol used for home automation applications in terms of radiofrequency robustness in a multi-protocol environment that is potentially subject to interferences. In this work, the aim is to assess the interference problems encountered by KNX-RF using simulation models that would increase its RF reliability. Thus, a first model was developed on MATLAB / Simulink and allowed to investigate the performance and limitations of this protocol at its physical layer in an interference scenario occurring inside a multiprotocol home and building automation box/gateway. These simulations were followed by field experimental tests in an indoor environment (house) to verify the results. A second model was developed to evaluate the MAC layer mechanisms of KNX-RF through the discrete event simulator OMNeT ++/Mixim. This model includes all the mechanisms of channel access and frequency agility specified by KNX-RF standard. A frame collision scenario was simulated and several improvement proposals are discussed in this manuscript. The developed models can be used to analyze and predict in advance phase the behavior of KNX-RF in a radio-constrained environment

Recently, mining high utility patterns has a huge range of applications such as retail market analysis and stock market prediction. The high utility pattern mining is an important research domain in data mining due to its capable of considering the different utility value and non-binary form quantity of each item. To address the limitation of traditional association rule mining, utility mining was defined. The traditional frequent patterns which are recognized by association rule mining does not reveal the impact factor, other than presence or absence of an item. The problem is that frequent patterns may only contribute a small amount of profit, whereas infrequent patterns may contribute a great deal of profit. Therefore, traditional association rule mining needs to expand its functionality to deal with this kind of task. By considering that each item has its individual price or value, utility patterns mining collects and analyzes data to identify the most contribution of the item. In order to perform high utility pattern mining, Yun et al. proposed the Maximum Utility Growth algorithm (MU-Growth) and Maximum Item Quantity tree (MIQ-Tree) to identify high utility patterns. The MU-Growth algorithm uses the overestimated utilities method and constructs their MIQ-Tree data structure. However, the MIQ-Tree has to be reconstructed by extracting every path of the transaction in the MIQ-Tree which will take long time to complete the mining of the whole tree if they contain lots of transactions. Moreover, the MU-Growth algorithm requires to scan database twice and often generates lots of candidates. To solve those problems, in this thesis, we propose the Inverted-File-High-Utility-Pattern-Tree data structure (IFHUP-Tree) and Inverted-File Pattern Growth algorithm to identify high utility patterns from the IFHUP-Tree without generating candidates. There are two types of relations which are concerned in our algorithm: (1) Transaction-Intersection (2) Non-Intersection. First, we concern the case of Transaction-Intersection, then the case of Non-Intersection. The IFHUP-Tree algorithm avoids the reconstructing procedure and generates the patterns with non-overestimated method to get the actual combination of high utility patterns. Our IFHUP-Tree algorithm requires only one database scan and one data structure to identify actual high utility patterns without generating any candidate. From the performance study, we show that our IFHUP-Tree algorithm is more efficient than MU-Growth algorithm both in real and synthetic datasets.

Full textThe knowledge that people create, possess and share can easily go unnoticed in organisations that do not put effort in identifying it. Knowledge, among other factors, is what people in organisations use to make decisions that can possibly give organisations a competitive advantage. Knowledge, as with other traditionally recognised resources, is a strategic resource that organisations can use to bring about positive change in business. Knowledge can be tacit or explicit and both types need to be managed strategically. Explicit knowledge tends to be easily accessible if it is stored in places such as databases where people can locate it, however, tacit knowledge can be slightly more challenging to access as it lies in the minds of people. Eskom’s Project Development Department (PDD) has 32 project developers who actively develop projects that the organisation will invest in. These projects include electricity generation stations, transmission lines or even pollution mitigating technologies. The project developers work with various stakeholders in and outside of the organisation to ensure that the projects are aligned with the strategic objectives of the organisation. This study aimed to identify the knowledge that the project developers possess and a knowledge audit was conducted on the project developers. The results show that the project developers possess vast amounts of knowledge, skills and are subject matter experts in various fields. The project developers also communicate with various other departments within Eskom when developing projects. A contributing fact to the varying knowledge and skills that the project developers possess is the different projects that each project developer develops. These projects can take up to three years to develop and this can enable a person to acquire knowledge in a specific field of operation. The majority of the project developers also stated that they preferred one on one physical conversations to acquire and share knowledge. Knowledge is gaining recognition as a strategic resource within organisations and strategic management of the knowledge is necessary as it can provide benefits for people and organisations as a whole.

While the state-run utilities face the trend of internationalization and liberalization, the localization of private enterprises and the diversification of running business have been become the main path toward surviving and developing. This dissertation adopts the method of individual case study and utilizes the subject of “Chinese Petroleum Corporation (CPC)” and “A” technology broker. It is divided into two parts to confer this topic more in depth. One is the key success factor of transformation strategy. Another is the role of the procedure of technology broker processes technical transfer. After analyzing and researching on this subject, we conclude the key success factors of transformation strategy of CPC adopted the diversification of running business in telecommunications industry as the following important items. (1) Corresponding to the policy of the liberalization of local telecommunications marketing. (2) To deal with a situation of the existed strategy of the localization and diversification. (3) Optimizing the profit and development of telecommunications marketing. (4) Using the resource of CPC efficiently. During the procedure of technology broker processes technical transfer, we may split those procedures into two phases as “the decision of strategic importance and plan”, and “execution and judgment”. The result of analysis shows that (1) The technology broker does not play any role during “the decision of strategic importance and plan” as the result of the limitation of purchase law of government. (2) During the phase of “execution and judgment” within technology broker processing technical transfer, the role which the steps of “project execution and control management” play is the most various, nevertheless, “open-bid tender and contract agreement” as well as “performance assessment” is much more simplifier. In addition, at the phase of “execution and judgment” when conducting technical transfer, the role of ”preparation and implementation” is applied most frequently but “education and training” is exercised most lowest. (3) During the phase of “execution and judgment”, the technology broker plays different roles in the fields of “consultation”, “correspondence and coordination”, “proxy”, “experience sharing”, “education and training”, and ”preparation and implementation”.

Title of Thesis:How Does Taiwanese Small-Sized Firm Utilize Its Limited Resource to Develop Technology and Marketing Competence Sequentially: From the Perspective of RBV Name of Institute:National Chi Nan University Pages:76 Graduation Time:June/2010 Degree Conferred:Master Student Name:Shi -Ping Wu Advisor Name:Hsin Mei Lin Abstract There are two viable paths for a firm to build competence. On the one side, firms utilize existing technology-oriented resource through inside-out route to develop new competence, on the other side firms utilize existing market-oriented resource through outside-in route to develop new competence. Traditionally, scholars suggests small-sized firm, who usually constrained by limited resource prioritize to develop technology-oriented competence to enter other markets sequentially (Wernerfelt, 1984). However, in practice, we observe contradiction that the TFT-LCD manufacturing suppliers in Taiwan adopt the market-oriented perspective so as to first respond to market demand for order income, and then learn advantage technology from foreign contractors. It is an interesting phenomenon that motive to resolve the gap between the theoretical argument and practice. Thus, we explore the sequential differences between inside-out route and outside-in route, and to differentiate technology competence and market competence. This research was using the extended case method (Burawoy, 1991) compared two Taiwan international enterprises that produce TFT-LCD manufacturing equipment. This article found that technology-orientation tends to emphasis more on research and development, organizational learning, innovation and design. On the other hand, market-orientation emphasizes much on the linking relations with other manufacturer, reputation, communication and service innovation.

The objective of this research are to prepare powders of titanium-doped zinc oxide (ITiO) by co-precipitation method, to produce ITiO targets through ceramic processing using these powders, and to deposit transparent conducting ITiOthin films by RF magnetron sputtering. In addition, the effects of the amount of titanium dopant in the ITiO targets as well as other sputtering parameters on the structural, electrical and optical properties. Finally, we are going to utilize ITiO thin films on CIGS solar cell element, and the impacts of ITiO materials on photoelectric effect are also investigated. From the experimental results, we found that the properties of the ITiO materials were sensitive to the conditions in the co-precipitation process. Polycrystalline ITiO powders were synthesized by calcining the precursors co-precipitated at pH=7 the processes of filtering, washing and drying. ITiO targets with relative density 95.54% and electrical resistivity 3.4×〖10〗^(-4) Ωcm were obtained by sintering the ITiO green bodies made from these ITiO powders through the processes of granulation, dry pressing andde-waxing. The optical transmittance and electrical resistivityof the ITiO thin films deposited using 1wt% titanium containing targets at the conditions of substrate temperature 250oC, working pressure 3×〖10〗^(-3)torr, working gas flow rate, and sputtering power 80W were 72.95% and around 2.72×〖10〗^(-4) Ωcm Eventually, CIGS sloar cell element was deposited using 2wt% titanium containing targets at the conditions of substrate temperature 150oC, working pressure 3×〖10〗^(-3)torr, working gas flow rate, and sputtering power 80W. Then, the efficiencyη=8.323% which iscrried out by photovoltaic conversion instrument .
