Abstract:

Abstract [Aristotle], Problemata inedita books 2–3 Bussemaker (of which the former = [Alexander of Aphrodisias, Problemata book 4 Usener) includes some thematically grouped sections which include a large number of items also found in the [Aristotle] Problems included in Bekker's edition, and others which do not. The subjects of some of the latter correspond to the titles of three lost works by Theophrastus. Given the use of works by Theophrastus in the Bekker Problems, and of his On Dizziness in the Bussemaker Problems, the possibility suggests itself that material from the three lost works too may be present in the Bussemaker Problems. The present paper examines this possibility — which must inevitably remain speculative — and also examines the doctrinal basis of these sections of the Problems.

Abstract:
Abstract Epicurus is well known as the letter writer par excellence among ancient philosophers. This is shown by examples from Alciphron, Diogenes Laertios, Seneca, and Plutarch. Additionally, the long list of partially preserved letters in the collections of fragments by Usener and Arrighetti is analyzed. These quotes demonstrate the use of letter collections originating with Epicurus and his first students. A new valuable testimony is provided by the publication in 2011 of POxy 5077. Its three fragments are clearly taken from a collection of letters of Epicurus. We find his name in a typical prescript: “Epicurus (to NN), greetings”. Leonteus and Mithres of the founding generation are mentioned. The copying of letters and the exchange of documents within the Epicurean community are fully on display. The little known shipwreck suffered by Epicurus is alluded to. All this is not without interest for students of early Christian letter collections.

Abstract:
Old scholarly myths die hard. It was K. F. Hermann, the discoverer of the ‘Socratic period’ in Plato's development, who first proposed (in 1839) that Book 1 of the Republic must originally have been an earlier, independent dialogue on justice, parallel to the Laches on courage, the Euthyphro on piety, and the Charmides on temperance. Hermann also introduced the separatist enterprise of analysing the rest of the Republic into three or four distinct compositional stages. Analytical proposals of this sort were then formulated by a number of other scholars, including Krohn, Usener, and Rohde. The notion of an earlier, partial publication seemed to be supported by two bits of external evidence: a statement in Aulus Gellius that ‘about two books’ (duo fere libri) of Plato's Republic were the first to appear; and a number of striking parallels on the community of women between Republic 5 and Aristophanes' Ekklesiazousai, produced c. 392 B.C.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper aims to investigate the equivalent of Epicurus’ πρόληψις, the second criterion of the Epicurean Canonic (DL X 31 = fr. 35 Usener), in Lucretius’ De rerum natura (DRN). Taking stock of the several occurrences of the Latin terms notitia and notities in the six books of the poem, I show that Lucretius’ view about preconception remains faithful to Epicurus’ πρόληψις, and that the poet does not endorse a less empiricist position than his Master because of some influence of the Stoic ἔννοια. To this end, I will also briefly address an important case in which πρόληψις, albeit not clearly mentioned, plays an essential role, namely the prolepsis of the deity (DRN V 1169–1182). Finally, I explain how Lucretius can be of some help in grasping the controversial relationship between the criterion of πρόληψις and that of ἐπιβολὴ τῆς διανοίας (animi inectus/iactus), showing in which way the poet seems to consider the latter as a criterion of truth in its own right.

Abstract:
Our information on Horace's friend Aristius Fuscus, whom he addresses in Odes 1.22 and Epistles 1.10, is neatly summed up by Nisbet and Hubbard: ‘he was a close friend of Horace's (serm. 1.9.61 ‘mihi cams’, epist. 1.10.3 ‘paene gemelli’). He wrote comedies (Porph. on epist. 1.10) and seems to have had a sense of humour: it was he who refused to rescue Horace from the ‘importunate man’ in the Sacra Via (serm. 1.9.60ff.). Horace says elsewhere that he was a town-lover, who disliked the countryside (epist. 1.10); here he amuses him with an account of the perils of his Sabine estate. Fuscus was a schoolmaster by profession (Porph. on serm. 1.9.60 ‘praestantissimus grammaticus illo tempore’); in epist. 1.10.45 Horace teases him for his stern discipline (‘nee me dimittes incastigatum…’: cf. CQ 9 [1959], 74f.). Fuscus is mentioned with Asinius Pollio and others as a critic who approved of Horace's poetry (serm. 1.10.83ff.). He may also have written on grammar; cf. gramm. 7.35.2 ‘Abnesti Fusti (Aristi Fusci Haupt, Aufusti Usener) grammatici liber est ad Asinium Pollionem’. The purpose of this note is to add a further piece to this picture, consonant with Fuscus' grammatical interests, namely to argue that Fuscus was also a Stoic, and that his philosophical loyalties are played on in the two poems addressed to him by Horace.

BARBAGLIA, LUCA. "RECEPTION AND LEGACY OF ERNST CASSIRER'S THEORY OF SYMBOLIC FORMS IN THE PHILOSOPHY OF WALTER BENJAMIN." Doctoral thesis, Università degli Studi di Milano, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/2434/869966.

Full text
Abstract:
This work reconstructs biographical, bibliographical and theoretical aspects of Walter Benjamin’s ideas in comparison to those of Ernst Cassirer. Its primary question asks: was Cassirer’s notion of symbol, as embedded in the philosophical context of his milieu, a primary element of Benjamin’s peculiar and lifelong investigation of the cultural and the perceptive, and of their mutual contamination? In answer, it constructs a historiographical survey of Benjamin’s Weltanschauung prior to encountering Professor Cassirer at the University of Berlin in the early 1910s. It investigates the impact and influence of Cassirer’s work on Benjamin, from his time as Cassirer’s student until the last years of Benjamin’s life. The form, role and development of the concept of symbol in Benjamin’s research is analysed from the early project of an epistemology to the academic failure of the Trauerspielbuch. It pays particular attention to the dimensions of the linguistic and the mythical, two main areas to which Cassirerian analysis was also addressed at the same time. In the last section, some key concepts of Benjamin’s philosophy are examined. Of particular interest is the relation between “choc”, the “medium of perception”. These are viewed through a theoretical analysis and comparison of several sources, and in the context of the configurative possibilities that Cassirer had previously ascribed to symbolization.

Users have been shown to be a significant source of technology based innovations. Over the last seven years developments on the Internet have demonstrated the viability of software products that are designed, developed, distributed and supported by Users. The purpose of this thesis is to examine how and why user developed software is supported on the Usenet newsgroup discussion service of the Internet. The context of this research was the Usenet newsgroup based user support mechanism for Apache web server software. Over 55% of all World Wide Web sites on the Internet are hosted on Apache web server software. The research for this thesis was based on an analysis of four weeks of Usenet help postings for Apache software and a survey questionnaire regarding outcomes and motivations that was sent to the individuals that participated on the Usenet. Newsgroup analysis indicates that over 70% of all queries on the Usenet get at least one public reply. A majority of the replies are in the form of technical opinions. A majority of information seekers receive their first public Usenet reply within the next day of the original posting. Survey results indicate that the technical help provided is relatively low-cost to the provider, and typically involves transferring information that is already known to that help-provider rather than conducting new problem-solving at the behest of a help seeker. Typical time spent on providing help is less than five minutes. Seventy one percent of information seekers noted that they had received full or partial help in their problem solving process through their Usenet posting. Frequent helpers indicated the following were the top three reasons for their motivation to help; 1) Knew related information already, 2) Answering problems is fun and 3) Obligation - they have been helped before and now want to reciprocate. The research results are framed within the literature of technology innovation and virtual communities in cyberspace. The implications for Open Source software development and further research recommendations are provided.

Abstract:
The Usenet is a global computer conferencing system on which users can affix textual messages under 4500 different categories. It currently has approximately 4,165,000 readers, and these .readers have appropriated language by adapting it to the Usenet's culture and medium. This thesis conceptualizes the Usenet community's appropriation of language, provides insights into how media and media restrictions cause their users to appropriate language, and discusses how future media may further cause users to appropriate language. With the Usenet we have a chance to study a relatively new community bound by relatively new technology, and perhaps we can learn more about the appropriation process by studying the two.

Abstract:
This report has been developed in the frame of the IEA SHC Task 61 Subtask A “User requirements”. The main objective was to rethink and reformulate user requirements to lighting (daylighting and electric lighting) in public buildings on the basis of a thorough literature study. The work is a joint effort of a number of scientists and represents collective knowledge in this topic. The concept of Lighting quality is the one, among many lighting concepts, which expresses the user perspective best. Lighting quality is the important goal of lighting designers and planners; however, it is difficult to define and to measure.
