Abstract:
Most studies on users’ perception of highly automated driving functions are focused on first contact/single usage. Nevertheless, it is expected that with repeated usage, acceptance and usage of automated driving functions might change this perception (behavioural adaptation). Changes can occur in drivers’ evaluation, in function usage and in drivers’ reactions to take-over situations. In a driving simulator study, N = 30 drivers used a level 3 (L3) automated driving function for motorways during six experimental sessions. They were free to activate/deactivate that system as they liked and to spend driving time on self-chosen side tasks. Results already show an increase of experienced trust and safety, together with an increase of time spent on side tasks between the first and fourth sessions. Furthermore, attention directed to the road decreases with growing experience with the system. The results are discussed with regard to the theory of behavioural adaptation. Results indicate that the adaptation of acceptance and usage of the highly automated driving function occurs rather quickly. At the same time, no behavioural adaptation for the reaction to take-over situations could be found.

Abstract:
The role of military bridges in military-civilian operations is very important. The introductory part briefly discusses the classification of military bridges and their brief history of development, highlighting the importance of military bridges during hostilities. The main part discribes the usage of military-engineering subdivisions, in particular, military bridges, during civilian military operations, such as their use in the elimination of natural or technogenic disasters. The article discusses examples of the use of military bridges in the last part of the history of Georgia, their importance during the liquidation of the crisis, such as: the use of a military bridge (КМ-02Т) in the construction of IDP settlements in the post-war Georgia, the use of infrastructure damaged by the Nenskra River in the Svaneti region, and the use of spinal bridges over the Terg River in Kazbegi Municipality. The use of military bridges is one of the best examples of military civilian operations.

Abstract:
Purpose: Individuals experiencing extended homelessness face multifaceted risks related to health, substance use, and continuing unemployment and may benefit from learning a problem-solving and decision-making method to assist them in dealing with everyday situations. Methods: This study used a multiple-baseline design to teach three men with extensive histories of homelessness the situation, options, disadvantages, advantages, and solution (SODAS) problem-solving and decision-making method and assessed their ability to learn it and guide another adult in the use of the method in simulated role-play problem situations. Results: All three participants demonstrated substantial increases (from approximately 10% of steps correct in baseline to 100% steps correct after intervention) in their ability to successfully guide another adult through the SODAS process when role-playing problem situations. Conclusions: The findings suggest that the SODAS problem-solving and decision-making method could be efficiently taught to adults who have histories of homelessness, and the participants found the process helpful for problems they encountered.

Abstract:
The goal of this study is to analyze the situations of teachers’ technology acceptance and usage (TAU) and web pedagogy content knowledge (WPACK) in terms of different variations and to determine of the relationship between these two. The study group of this research consists of 96 teachers in total having different variations such as different branches, different professional seniorities, different ages and different educational levels they work in. Data collection tools comprising of 3 open-ended questions which are developed and structured by researchers and two different scales measuring technology acceptance and usage and web pedagogical content knowledge are utilized in this study. The scales and structured forms are applied through random sampling with screening model. In the results of the research, teachers’ technology acceptance and usage situations, web pedagogical content knowledge situations and their sexes and web 2.0 technologies usage situations don’t differ in terms of the dimensions and the entirety of the scales. The following are established according to the results; there are differences among teachers’ TAU situations, there aren’t any differences among their WPACK in terms of their branches; there aren’t any differences among their TAU situations and there are differences among their WPACK situations in terms of their ages; TAU and WPACK situations are not reasonable statistically in terms of their professional seniorities and educational levels they work in. Furthermore, it is also determined that web applications usage durations are not reasonable in terms of their TAU situations but they are reasonable in terms of WPACK. The answers which teachers provided towards open-ended questions are established to be categorized as education, technology, interaction, visuality, source and development. Additionally, it is settled that there is a low correlation between TAU and WPACK situations but it is possible to form a model between them. From the point of view of the findings of this study, it is suggested that knowledge and information regarding technology integration is provided experimentally to teachers in in-service seminars.

Abstract:
The Dependency Structure Modeling Value Bucket tool is integrated into Radical Innovation Design methodology in order to explore the front end of innovation in need seeker mode. The determination of innovation opportunities, here called value buckets, has been automated by matrix representations of dependencies among problems or pain points, usage situations, and existing solutions. Three matrices are built along the problem-setting stage of a Radical Innovation Design process. The first matrix expresses which problems occur during usage scenarios, the second how far existing solutions cover problems, and the third to what degree existing solutions are useful in usage situations. Combining these three matrices results in a matrix of value buckets, which represents the combinations of important problems which occur during characteristic usage situations and for which few existing solutions are useful or efficient. This outcome allows focused creativity workshops to be run, resulting in usage innovations with a high likelihood of market success.

Abstract:
Situational methods are approaches to the development of software systems that are designed and constructed to fit particular circumstances that often refer to project characteristics. One common way to create situational methods is to reuse method components, which are the building blocks of development methods. For this purpose, method components must be stored in a method base, and then retrieved and composed specifically for the situation in hand. Most approaches in the field of situational method engineering require the expertise of method engineers to support the retrieval and composition of method components. Furthermore, this is usually done in an ad-hoc manner and for pre-defined situations. In this paper, the authors propose an approach, supported by a tool that creates situational methods semi-automatically. This approach refers to structural and behavioral considerations and a wide variety of characteristics when comparing method components and composing them into situational methods. The resultant situational methods are stored in the method base for future usage and composition. Based on an experimental study of the approach, the authors show that it provides correct and suitable draft situational methods, which human evaluators have assessed as relevant for the given situations.

Abstract:
The work is devoted to the verbs of falling in Kazym dialect of Khanty language (Ob-Ugric < Finno-Ugric). This dialect is spoken in the district near the Kazym River, Khanty-Mansi district. The work suggests the detailed distribution of the core verbs pertaining to the semantic field of falling. The system of verbs of falling in Kazym Khanty can be characterized as weakly dominant system, when there is one verb that has a wide meaning and can be used nearly in all the contexts. The main verb is pitti. It denotes situations belonging to the tree frames associated with falling. The verb is not used to denote the situation of destruction. The usage of the majority of other verbs described in the work is also limited to three frames. However, pitty have the widest usage. It’s meaning is free of additional connotations. It has a bulk of grammaticalized and idiomatized usages. There are also some other verbs that correspond to the same basic frames. However, the number of particular situations they denote within these frames is narrower as compared to pitti. Separate verbs (a verb and its suffixed correlates) are used in context of the fourth frame, namely destruction. As a result, the table is given where the distribution of the verbs of falling among different diagnostic contexts for falling subframes in Kazym Khanty is summarized.

Abstract:
The historian, philosopher and anthropologist Michel de Certeau (1925–1986) stands out as a singular figure in the French intellectual landscape. The scope and depth of his work represent a decisive turning-point in the contemporary philosophical ideas. Though he retained the bulk of the teachings relating to historiography and mysticism, he introduced many philosophical and sociological themes to read the traditional and the modern world. Our work consists in examining the main idea according to which practices are customs or operations dependent on a situation. In order to do that, de Certeau uses a full array of notions such as the formality of practices, the strategy and the tactics along with other closely related concepts aiming at explaining social practices and what people do with the order proposed to or imposed on them. The purpose is to study the cautious and clever manner in which people bypass this order’s requirements in their manifold uses of space, time and memory. These rebellious customs are particularly expressed in everyday practices. This leads us to wonder how topical Certeau’s analyses are and how much they can affect today's reflections: what theoritical foundation is he relying on to study nature and the function of these practices? Have his reflections changed our approach to the social, cultural and political issues?

Abstract:
The identification of risk situations is essential in the process of MSD prevention: this identification called "MSD risk assessment" relies on the "simple" risk assessment tools to target critical situations. This thesis focuses on the difficulties of using simple tools in the initial phase of the MSD prevention process. This study, therefore, investigates the contribution of the field of ergonomics of activity and in particular Situational Operational Leeway (SOL) for MSD risk assessment tools. We identified and listed the SOL indicators based on the human-centered model of activity (Vézina, 2001), and then we analyzed the presence of these indicators in the simple tools with a self-developed checklist. Nine simple tools were used to assess a sample of 10 work stations in the manufacturing industry in France. Moreover, a list of indicators derived from three components of the human centered model of activity was proposed to explore the sufficiency of SOL in those work stations. The findings showed that the simple tools do not consider SOL indicators during an assessment and the various assessments with ten simple tools produced different results on the same work station. In general, the SOL indicators estimated the level of MSD risk lower than the evaluation of the simple tools. The SOL proposes to consider the resources available to the operator to interact with work situations and its challenges. Therefore, the difference between the assessments by the simple tools and the SOL indicators might be related to the focus of simple tools (oriented on constraints). This study showed that the SOL indicators could provide complementary information to that obtained by simple tools. These results propose a risk assessment approach that uses SOL sufficiency to target critical situations

Abstract:
Previous research has suggested that the country of origin cue is important to consumers during their purchase decision making process; the cue is utilised as an indicator of product quality and thus has an effect on purchase decisions. However, country of origin research has been heavily criticised in terms of methodology and has tended to focus on durable, manufactured products such as automobiles, electronics and apparel. This research investigates whether consumers do utilise the country of origin cue during actual wine purchase decisions and whether consumer perceptions of wine will vary based upon the country from which it originates. In addition, this study also seeks to identify all of the product attributes which are utilised by wine purchasers, and the degree to which these attributes are important to them during the purchase decision process. Finally, the research seeks to understand the influence that individual consumer characteristics (i.e. demographic variables, product knowledge and product involvement) and usage situations will have upon attribute utilisation and importance. In order to examine these broad research questions, a structured survey was developed and administered to respondents in four countries immediately following an actual wine purchase. Analysis of the collected survey data revealed that consumers typically utilised only a small number of attributes during their purchase decisions, and that the attributes which were most frequently utilised were not necessarily the most important to wine consumers. The country of origin cue was the eighth most frequently utilised attribute and the fourth in terms of importance. The majority of consumers could accurately identify the country of origin of the wine they had just purchased and their perceptions of wines were found to vary based upon the country of origin. Individual consumer characteristics were found to have varying effects upon attribute utilisation and importance ratings. Three-quarters of all wine purchases were made to resolve just four usage situations, and these situations were found to moderate the origin of the wine that the consumer selected during their purchase decision. From a theoretical standpoint, this study supports the idea that consumers utilise only a small number of attributes during their decision making process, and that this number will increase as product knowledge and product involvement levels increase. The most important attributes for consumers were found to be intrinsic in nature. Country of origin theory has also been advanced by this study; consumers were found to hold stereotyped perceptions of wine based upon its national origin, and both the nationality and education level of the consumer were found to moderate the utilisation of the country of origin cue. Whilst earlier researchers had suggested that any home country bias may be product specific, this study suggests that it may actually be a product dimension specific phenomenon. The high reliability of the product involvement and subjective knowledge scales should also be of value to future consumer behaviour researchers. Similarly, the idea that the usage situation influenced which product was purchased, but not how it was selected, expands current knowledge. Practical implications arising from this study include the identification of the importance of having previously tried a wine; marketers could increase sales through the provision of wine tasting opportunities for consumers. The significant correlation between involvement and the frequency of wine consumption also provides wine producers with an opportunity to increase sales through initiatives which will increase consumer involvement with wine. The results indicate that the wine industry should focus on the production and marketing of wines which are suitable for consumption in the identified four dominant usage situations and should seek to increase consumption in dining situations in the US. Finally, promotional strategies linking New Zealand wines with high quality appear to have been successful, but these messages will need to be repeated in order to reinforce the positive consumer perceptions.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
This doctorate research tries to define precisely what I term a sculptural situation considering sculpture – ie historically still & perennial – as the meeting point of multiple temporalities. To elaborate this research I took my artistic pratice as a ground to inquire into. I did test several assumptions which have informed my latest works thereafter described. Furthermore, a greater attention was given to contemporary sculpture so as to open wider perspectives drawn from historical artistic practives & theories. I studied the relationship between sculpture & daily life and most specifically their being time-based experiences, as much during the making of the works as when perceived by a spectator. I was then able to study sculpture in relation to everyday objects : either through the introduction of the later in sculptures themselves or their possible reproduction or even the use that can be made of them. I thus established a typology of what I name usable sculpture, whose functionality is not an end in itself but is nevertheless a possible way of experiencing the work of art

Abstract:

Abstract:
The main purpose of this research is based on identifying and analysing the usages diversity of complex technical systems, Light Commercial Vehicles (LCV), carried out by heterogeneous professional users so as to contribute to a typology of usages. The aim of the typology is to serve as an informational resource for the actors of the design process. This work revolves around two directions. ■ The first direction focuses on the analysis of the usages diversity so as to be able to put to the fore the structuring criteria. To this end, we propose a transversal analysis unit to all the activities: “the situated usages of a multi instrumented system (MIS)”. We define them as all the user’s actions directed towards a specific goal that performs a general and situated activity, and involves all or part of the MIS as a mediator or object of the activity. The MIS represents the sub-instrumental system built from a complex technical system by the user. The analyses are based on two sets of observations (exploratory and systematic ones) among a variety of users. The results show that there are wider dimensions to the several poles of the instrumented activity influencing the realization of the usages. Indeed, the user is having complex interrelations with the resources of his action and with the characteristics of the global activity allowed by the usages and the characteristics of the situation under which they are produced. Therefore there are different types of usages depending on the SMI position within the usage and the object of the usage.■ The second direction aims at a reduction of the usages diversity purpose so as to achieve of categorization. Creating a categorization implies the need to define an analysis unit that underlies the construction of categories and variables allowing their discrimination. To this end, we propose to highlight a second analysis unit, “the usages situations’ classes of a SMI”, to enable further generalization through variables that structure the usages. But the sole conception of a categorization is not sufficient enough compared to the company’s design characteristics and to the various informative needs of its actors. As a consequence we propose a first task to apprehend the understanding of the processes involved as well as the different agents’ assignments which contribute to this understanding and to the informational needs in terms of final users’ usages they may require. In order to do so, a series of semi structured interviews were held with those involved in design: 1) some tasks imply the necessity to take into account LCV usages; 2) the performing of distinct activities at various set times and/or design processes. The results offer guidelines to contribute to the evolution of the typology of usages. These various works conducted enable us to propose different ways of developing the existing typology of usages in the company. They cover two dimensions: 1) the data provided by typology itself and one’s way to present it; 2) the methodology used to update the data

Abstract:
Any policy on the use of numbers in text must take into account the reader’s impression that numbers written as numerals (symbols) appear to emphasize quantity more strongly than numbers spelled out as words. Because numerals convey quantity more efficiently than spelled-out numbers, they are generally preferable in technical writing. In literary writing, by contrast, spelled-out numbers may be more compatible with style. Despite these general principles, usage may appear inconsistent when a publication chooses to use numerals in some instances and words in others. The guidelines outlined in this section attempt to reduce these inconsistencies and avoid use of numerals that may be jarring to the reader. In situations that are not governed by these guidelines, common sense and editorial judgment should prevail.

Abstract:
For a decade now, borders in Europe have been back on the political agenda. Border research has responded and is breaking new ground in thinking about and exploring borders. This book follows this development and strengthens a perspective that is interested in life realities and that focuses on everyday cultural experiences of borders. The authors reconstruct such experiences in the context of different forms of migration and mobility as well as language contact situations and are sensitive to the freedom of the participants. In this way, they empirically identify everyday cultural usage or appropriation strategies of borders as vastly different experiences of borders. The readers of this volume will gain insights into current developments in border research and liefe realities in Europe where borders are (made) relevant. Abstract:
Assessing the number of users defined by a set of specific usage attributes in a given usage contextual situation is not always an obvious task in a market segmentation process. Although new approaches in design and marketing seem to be more sensitive to the adequacy of a design concept with the usage scenarios, these methods do not systematically consider the various usage situations. The present article puts forward a methodology intending to build a usage scenarios space in which the input data is thoroughly collected and validated. This methodology is applied to the complex and multifactorial issue of falls among the elderly in the Metropolitan France. In this paper, numerous medical publications have been made to study influential factors of fall situations. However, even solution providers for fall prevention and teleassistance ignore the real situational coverage of their solutions. As a result, “usage scenarios space” is built using an appropriate segmentation of usage contexts (here, fall situations) and user characteristics. These data are used for a design oracle to predict (simulate) the various and multiple usage scenarios.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper explores situational factors and attitudes affecting sustainable electric kettle usage. We conducted a two-week long field study with five residents in Denmark who self-reported their electric kettle usage data, purpose of usage, and situations of usage, over the study period. A follow-up interview was also conducted after the field study to explore reasons behind the observed behaviors. Results show, the amount of excess water heated significantly varied by usage purpose as well as the time sensitivity of the usage purpose. There was no observable effect of the minimum fill level marker on the amount of excess water heated. Participants’ considerations for purchasing a specific kettle and their usage behaviors were not influenced by sustainability-related concerns. We identified four important factors that influenced the amount of excess water heated and participants’ decision to retain or dispose it. They included, (1) uncertainty in the need for hot water in the near future, (2) flexibility in the needed volume for a usage purpose, (3) forgetting to use heated water, and (4) concerns about limescale build up.

Abstract:
There has been rising interest in confronting formal models of design with practical design methods, in order to understand better both and to explore how they can improve each other. In this article, we try to map the Radical Innovation Design (RID) methodology in Gero’s Function-Behavior-Structure (FBS) framework. We encounter difficulties in doing so, and propose new constructs extending the FBS framework to account for some processes in RID. For instance, FBS is extended to describe the early stages of RID, where usages are analyzed to identify the appropriate situations and problems on which to innovate. We present a short practical case study to illustrate the relevance of these concepts. Our findings join those of others who have investigated the use of FBS to illustrate innovative projects, where requirements are unclear. We propose perspectives for future research, notably pursuing this work with the situated FBS framework.

Abstract:
Although the 36 Strategies are a summary of some of the war strategies used by the ancient Chinese warriors, over the years, these have been commonly cited and used by many Chinese businessmen. These strategies are grouped under six categories. Each category contains six strategies. The six categories in turn can be used in two types of situations. While the three categories are used in a winning situation; the other three are used in a disadvantageous situation. However, the application and usage of these strategies can be mingled in various combinations. The set of these strategies is a very good alternative to the western style of management for global strategic competition for the Eurasian companies. This seems right both theoretically and practically. After the collapse of globalism of the 20th century, we are on the threshold of a new model of globalization. In that sense, while developing a Eurasian strategic management style, these 36 strategies of the Chinese provide a very good source, parallel to the market domination of Chinese economy in the global economy.

"Instrumentation and Simulation of the Hygro-Thermal Conditions of a Green Building: A Study of the Impact of the Post-Occupancy Usages on Thermal Comfort." In ASME 2010 4th International Conference on Energy Sustainability. ASMEDC, 2010. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/es2010-90499.

Full text
Abstract:
Post-occupancy evaluations (POEs) are useful for evaluating the success of any building design, but are particularly useful in evaluating green buildings. It is the only opportunity architects and engineers have to learn if their buildings actually work as planned. On the other hand, following the “guidebook” of a green building, i.e. having occupants aware of the particularity of the premise and taught about how it works and what the proper usages are (which are not automatically straightforward), is of prime importance since misuse of a green building can directly lead to discomfort and energy over consumption. In that framework, this paper stresses the link between occupants’ usages and their indoor thermal comfort by attempting a quantification of the impact of each usage on indoor temperature and hygrometry (and thus thermal comfort), showing by the way that, in order a POE to fully give exploitable results, a communication to occupants on proper usages has to be the first step after the delivery of a green building. To study that link, the real case of a green building located in the French tropical island of La Re´union has been used. The overall idea followed in this work lies in two steps: The first one is the creation of a “validated” digital building description obtained thanks to a process of comparison between simulations outputs (DesignBuilder) and field measurements (weather and comfort stations), and to a “block by block” approach that allows independent validations of the description of the fabrics and of the description of the usages. The second step is the utilization of the model obtained in the first step to perform simulations of new usages, as modifications in natural ventilation features (doors, windows open or closed) or in number of occupants, lighting schedule etc. These new simulations lead to the possibilities of comparing situations between each others, and therefore of quantifying the contribution, positive or negative, of each chosen usage to thermal comfort. Eventually, this paper will describe an example of combination of new usages that makes the conditions noticeably more comfortable within the building, stressing that following the good usages in a green building is a first requirement before realizing any POE.

Full text
Abstract:
The first-order spherical harmonics method (or P1 approximation) has found prolific usage for approximate solution of the radiative transfer equation (RTE) in participating media. However, the accuracy of the P1 approximation deteriorates as the optical thickness of the medium is decreased. The Modified Differential Approximation (MDA) was originally proposed to remove the shortcomings of the P1 approximation in optically thin situations. This article presents algorithms to apply the MDA to arbitrary geometry—in particular, three-dimensional (3D) geometry with obstructions, and inhomogeneous media. The wall-emitted component of the intensity was computed using a combined view-factor and ray-tracing approach. The Helmholtz equation, arising out of the medium-emitted component, was solved using an unstructured finite-volume procedure. The general procedure was validated against benchmark Monte Carlo results. The accuracy of MDA was found to be far superior to the standard P1 approximation in optically thin situations, and comparable to the P1 approximation in optically thick situations. Calculation and storage of the view-factor matrix was found to be a major shortcoming of the MDA, and several strategies to reduce both memory and computational time are discussed and demonstrated. In addition, for inhomogeneous media, calculation of optical distances requires a ray-tracing procedure, which was found to be a bottleneck from a computational efficiency standpoint.

Abstract:
This paper is to present the structural integrity analyses for a preemptive weld overlay in a pressurizer surge nozzle. Based on ASME Code Case N-504-3 and MRP-169, the full structural weld overlay sizing calculation, residual stress improvement analysis, shrinkage evaluation, fatigue crack growth analysis and fatigue usage analysis were performed. After weld overlay installation, the welded nozzle structure has to be analyzed to measure the improvement in residual stresses around the inner surface of the original weld. The residual compressive stress distribution is thus addressed to be resistant to subsequent stress corrosion, the initiation of cracking, and the further crack growth. To ensure the structural integrity of the attached piping system, the weld induced displacement is measured and transformed to temperature gradient to simulate the shrinkage after overlay welding and to analyze the post-weld distortion and stress situations. Based on the further comparisons of fatigue crack growth with all of system operating cycles, two surface cracks in the original weld are conservatively postulated. Additionally, both the stress limits and cumulative fatigue usages of the nozzle with weld overlay are evaluated to meet the design requirements of ASME Code Section III. The present analysis results confirm the effectiveness of the procedure for analyzing the structural integrity of a nozzle with weld overlay.

Abstract:
Abstract Three actual applications of spray plume sensors for industrial coating operations are presented. Two of these are in the aeronautic industry and one in the automotive industry. Depending on the application, different types of sensors were used ranging from plume shape monitoring (particle trajectories) to full plume characterization including in-flight measurement of individual particle properties. In each case, the process monitoring scheme developed depended on the manufacturer's requirements as well as the nature of the information provided by the sensor. The significant differences in usage and working conditions compared to an R&D environment are examined. Advantages and drawbacks in each of the three situations are detailed. A tentative forecast of coming developments in this field is also given.

Abstract:
The modular workshop offers a science-based introduction to the concept of social-emotional competences. It focuses on the psychological assessment of such competences in in institutions specialized in the professional development of people with learning disabilities. As such, the workshop is primarily to be understood as an application-oriented training programme for professionals who work in vocational education and use (or teach the usage of) the assessment tools SEC-I and SEC-SJT (Inventory and Situational Judgment Test for the assessment of social-emotional competence in young people with (sub-) clinical cognitive or psychological impairment) which were developed at the University of Bamberg. The workshop comprises seven subject areas that can be flexibly put together as required: theoretical basics and definitions of social-emotional competence, the basics of psychological assessment, potential difficulties in its use, usage of the self-rating scale, the situational judgment test, the observer-rating scale, and objective observation of behaviour. The general aim of this workshop is to learn how to use and apply the assessment tools in practical settings.
