Full textThis research has sought to identify, analyze and interpret the perceptions of undergraduate university students of the specialty of Music Composition of a music career, about the pedagogical usability of music notation software; trying to know if the use of said software contributes to the students of composition, in the achievement of their learning objectives. Investigating the use and value of technologies in the academic life of students is a complex reality, because even when they study in the same institution, the characteristics of the personal environment of each student are the ones that will shape their perception regarding the pedagogical usability of a technological resource, so the use of open methods, which allow to fully show its complexity, and which consider the individuality of each participant, such as those existing in qualitative research, have been considered the most appropriate for this research. Carried out within a qualitative approach, the research level has been descriptive - exploratory, having used the semi-structured interview in a virtual mode as an instrument for gathering information, that is, through videoconference. The result of the research has shown us that, although it is possible to study and write music without music notation software, all the interviewed students coincide in their perception that the use of notation software does allow them to speed up the work in their activities academic-musical, and that nowadays, they could not maintain the same academic-musical rhythm without the use of said softwares, interpreting said results as a sample of the pedagogical usability of music notation software for composition students in the achievement of their learning goals.

Full textThe application of concepts of usability has been relevant in the development of consumer products. Such concepts allow the development of products known for its simple learning of operation techniques and almost non-existing errors in its use. In 2006 the first two parts of ISO 20282 standard were published. Here, the most important aspects of this standard are introduced giving some examples to clear some issues. The standard is applied through the use of tests evaluating the ease of the operation of consumer products. The objective of this part of the norm is to analyze its usefulness and be able to detect its strong and weak points.

Avaliar a usabilidade de aplicações computacionais usando testes tradicionais em laboratório é custoso e consome tempo. Para aplicações Web modernas, geralmente desenvolvidas, testadas e publicadas no Internet time, essa abordagem não é viável. Uma maneira mais eficaz para avaliar a usabilidade de aplicações Web consiste em coletar informações sobre as interações dos usuários e processar automaticamente esses dados, a fim de detectar problemas de usabilidade na execução de tarefas pré-definidas. As soluções reportadas baseadas nessa abordagem geralmente falham no fornecimento eficiente de ferramentas para a definição de tarefas, especialmente em aplicações Web grandes e dinâmicas. Para resolver este problema, foi desenvolvido o USABILICS, um sistema destinado à avaliação remota e automática de usabilidade baseada em um modelo de interface. O modelo proposto permite a definição de tarefas usando uma abordagem simples e intuitiva, que pode ser aplicada em aplicações Web grandes e dinâmicas. USABILICS analisa a execução das tarefas calculando a similaridade entre a sequência de eventos produzida pelos usuários e a sequência de eventos definida pelo avaliador. Baseado na análise, o USABILICS fornece um índice de usabilidade, bem como recomendações para solucionar os problemas de usabilidade detectados na execução de cada tarefa.

Full textThis report presents development and results of a research about usability of Dosvox, free system developed in the Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) and used by blind people in the performance of their tasks with the use of computers, including the interaction with the Web. Through exploratory research based on the observation of the interaction of blind students with the Web, usability problems were identified in the Dosvox interface and in the Webvox, that is a program which is part of the system and is used to access the electronic sites on the Web. While there has been a major concern to develop the Dosvox with focus on novice users, structured interviews with the system developers discovered that the problems were related to the fact that the interface is designed in accordance with the mental model of these Information Technology professionals. This fact hampers its use by people less accustomed to these concepts. In addition to these results, information found on observation of blind specialists in accessibility using Dosvox in the interaction with the Web was realized. After this observation, structured interviews were conducted, an other problems in the system were highlighted, added to proposals of usability improving to Dosvox.

Full textHaving an interface that provides a good user experience has become a critical factor for success in information systems. Cultural differences, however, may have a significant impact in this experience, but are seldom taken into account during interface design and evaluation, particularly in Brazil, a multicultural country with continental dimensions. Our goal was to investigate whether the cultural differences between the five socio-economical macro-regions of Brazil are profound enough to impact user experience in web-based interfaces and, if so, how. An experiment with 110 participants, 22 per region, was conducted in five Brazilian state capitals: Belém, Salvador, Goiânia, São Paulo and Porto Alegre. We compared the cultural differences identified by VSM, a cultural dimensions mapping tool created by Hofstede, with performance on tasks and user experience evaluations, using the QUIS questionnaire, of a fictitious Internet Banking System. Cultural differences were identified and correlated with differences in user experience, particularly in regards to the amount of information and colors shown in the interface.

Full textThis research Newspapers design: the relationship between format and usability - has a main objective to reinforce the importance of user involvement in product design, by understanding the influence that the format defined here by the size of the pages and sections organization has on the usability of the printed newspaper. Presents the technological and economic aspects related to this product and verifies the influence exerted by them on the format. Maps the main aspects of newspaper design and the different formats of newspapers, its origins and its relevance to its design. It attempts to map the format of the newspapers in different markets and the possible impact of format changes in the circulation, content and advertising of printed newspapers. Reviews of the current landscape of electronic journals and their possible interference in reading habits. Reviews also the literature on usability, focusing on documents design methodology and its application in usability tests for newspapers. Finally, describes the field research through interviews with newspaper design experts, systematic observations in newspaper printing facilities and on the newspaper market in the city of Rio de Janeiro and application of usability testing for newspapers. It concludes that, considering the public participating in trials professionals who work printing newspapers only aspect of the format related to the sections organizations seems to exert influence on the usability of the newspapers.

Full textSpinal cord injury and stroke are one of the most common causes of disability. According to the World Health Organization there are about 9 million new cases of stroke and 500,000 of spinal cord injury every year. Thanks to medical innovation and rehabilitation, lots of people survive to stroke, spinal cord injury or other neurological diseases. However, several survivors have sequelae for the rest of their lives so they need intensive rehabilitation to reduce them and to increase their quality of life and autonomy in activities of daily living, this probably happens with the help of some kind of Assistive Technology. Assistive Technologies are any type of existing products that are used by people with some type of disability to facilitate participation, protect and support, train, measure or replace functions, structures and activities, in addition to helping to prevent deficiencies, limitations in activity or restrictions on participation. For the correct design of these products it is necessary to evaluate its usability. This is important to ensure that the product fits in the user’s needs and desires of the users. Therefore, usability is the degree to which a system, product or service can be used by specific users to achieve specific objectives with effectiveness, efficiency and satisfaction in a specific context of use. So, it should incorporate the user throughout the design process (user-centered design), where users test and give their opinion about the product with the usability tests. The main hypothesis of the thesis is that by means of elaboration of a new usability questionnaire, the users (people with some type of neurological disease) could actively participate in user-centered design during the development of new assistive technologies or they could evaluate the usability of existing products. Therefore, the main objective of this thesis is to define and implement a new usability questionnaire that evaluates assistive technologies, and it has to be easy and quick to use, and also it also should be accessible to people with neurological diseases. For this purpose, a Delphi study was carried out with three rounds to know what items are needed to evaluate assistive technologies and to know the preferences of the respondents about the questionnaires. With the information extracted from the Delphi study, the usability questionnaire was designed. Finally, a validation of the usability questionnaire was made. The conclusions are the following: (1) Existing questionnaires do not cover all areas for evaluating assistive technologies. Also, they are neither easy nor quick to answer for patients with neurological diseases. (2) By means of the Delphi study usability indicators to evaluate assistive technologies were identified. (3) Following the results of the Delphi study a reliable, reproducible and sensible questionnaire was designed in order to evaluate the usability of these products without losing the quality of the response.

As interfaces de sites institucionais devem basear-se em princípios de usabilidade, cujo propósito é garantir a informação de forma segura, eficiente e efetiva às audiências e a seus respectivos usuários. Os princípios teóricos sobre recomendações para o desenvolvimento de sites apresentam-se amplamente disponíveis, mas a aplicação destes, verificados com ferramentas especializadas, continuam sendo fundamentais para o alcance da efetiva usabilidade. O presente estudo objetivou testar a ferramenta CMS (Content Management System) durante o desenvolvimento de um site institucional do Programa de Pós-graduação em design da Universidade Estadual Paulista, visando ao melhoramento de sua usabilidade. Os procedimentos metodológicos caracterizaram-se por cinco etapas, iniciando-se pela revisão teórica e seguindo por aplicações laboratoriais e de simulações práticas, as quais se caracterizaram pela evolução alternada de etapas de análise, desenvolvimento de protótipo, e reanálise, resultando em um protótipo final. Esses resultados foram considerados satisfatórios, pois foi verificado que a aplicação de ferramentas CMS no desenvolvimento de sites institucionais melhora seus níveis de usabilidade. Entretanto, a principal contribuição do presente estudo está na conquista de novos conhecimentos decorrentes dos experimentos realizados, bem como no incremento dos temas ligados ao design de interfaces, à usabilidade e à ergonomia informacional, os quais colaboram de forma efetiva para o desenvolvimento do design ergonômico
The interfaces of institutional sites must be based on usability principles, whose purpose is to ensure the security, efficient and effective information to audiences and their users. The theoretical principles of recommendations for site development have become widely available, but he implementation of them checked with specialized tools remain be fundamental to the achievement of effective usability. This study aimed to test the CMS tool (Content Management System) during the development of an institutional site of the Graduate Program in Design at the Universidade Estadual Paulista intended to improve its usability. The methodological procedures were characterized by five steps, starting by the review theory and following by laboratory applications and practices simulations, which were characterized by alternating stages of development testing, prototype development, and reanalysis, resulting in a final prototype. These results were considered satisfactory, because it was verified that the use of CMS tools in the development of institucional sites improved their levels of usability. However, the main contribution of this study is to acquire new knowledge resulting from experiments, as well as the increase in issued related to interface design, usability and ergonomic information, which collaborate effectively for the development of ergonomic design

Full textNowadays, information and communication systems that work with a high volume of data require infrastructures that allow an understandable representation of it from the user's point of view. This thesis analyzes the Cluster Display Wall platforms, used to visualized massive amounts of data, and specifically studies the Liquid Galaxy platform, developed by Google. Using the Liquid Galaxy platform, a performance study of representative visualization applications was performed, identifying the most relevant aspects of performance and possible bottlenecks. Specifically, we study in greater depth a representative case of visualization application, Google Earth. The system behavior while running Google Earth was analyzed through different kinds of tests with real users. For this, a new performance metric was defined, based on the visualization ratio, and the usability of the system was assessed through the traditional attributes of effectiveness, efficiency and satisfaction. Additionally, the system performance was analytically modeled and the accuracy of the model was tested by comparing it with actual results.
Actualmente, los sistemas de información y comunicación que trabajan con grandes volúmenes de datos requieren el uso de plataformas que permitan una representación entendible desde el punto de vista del usuario. En esta tesis se analizan las plataformas Cluster Display Wall, usadas para la visualización de datos masivos, y se trabaja en concreto con la plataforma Liquid Galaxy, desarrollada por Google. Mediante la plataforma Liquid Galaxy, se realiza un estudio de rendimiento de aplicaciones de visualización representativas, identificando los aspectos de rendimiento más relevantes y los posibles cuellos de botella. De forma específica, se estudia en mayor profundidad un caso representativo de aplicación de visualización, el Google Earth. El comportamiento del sistema ejecutando Google Earth se analiza mediante diferentes tipos de test con usuarios reales. Para ello se define una nueva métrica de rendimiento, basada en el ratio de visualización, y se valora la usabilidad del sistema mediante los atributos tradicionales de efectividad, eficiencia y satisfacción. Adicionalmente, el rendimiento del sistema se modela analíticamente y se prueba la precisión del modelo comparándolo con resultados reales.

Full textThe interaction with Web applications is becoming increasingly present daily, being useful to provide resources that allow the execution of services, education or entertainment. But many of the resources present barriers in relation to accessibility, hindering disabled users use them efficiently. As solution to this problem, guidelines to develop accessible Web applications have been proposed. However, despite the guidelines definition, the current scenario shows that there are difficulties related to the development considering accessibility requirements. Thus, this thesis focus on proposing an approach to support good practices for Web development, based on the use of these guidelines to the development team environment. Therefore, activities are defined on 3 layers: Accessibility Training, Decisions Management, and Development and Tooling. In order to validate the initial design of this thesis proposal, case studies were detailed, presenting how the Web development can be benefited through the tool support, including the use of modeling techniques and patterns for accessible code generation. Additionally, the benefits with the experience collaboration and training of the development team are also verified, to allow this the tool AccessibilityUtil was developed. After this, the approach is described and validated in a controlled experiment, where groups were defined with and without the approach use. As conclusion, we verified benefits using the approach, since that was identified a better support on development best practices regarding to the use of accessibility requirements, which results in a better quality for accessible Web applications

The man-machine interfaces are an important element of control processing units of oil. It is through them that the operating personnel keeps the process variables within the limits of safety and quality. Usability measures the ease with which an interface can be manipulated and the satisfaction in their use among other attributes. This study aims to evaluate the operating screens s usability attributes for a distillation unit of an oil refinery by measuring interface user s performance and subjective satisfaction in it s use. The evaluation of current system s usability level was accomplished through the application of standardized forms in operating personnel, engineering and maintenance involved in developing and operating the system in addition to measuring performance in the tasks execution. The survey identified the groups most affected by the current configuration of the interface and showed that the attributes of memorization and use efficiency were those with greater potential for improvement. Also as a result of this work, was identified some points that can be improved to increase performance in use and can increase the satisfaction of its users. As interfaces homem-máquina são um elemento importante do sistema de controle de unidades de processamento de petróleo. Por meio delas o pessoal de operação mantém as variáveis de processo dentro dos limites de segurança e qualidade. A usabilidade mede a facilidade com que uma interface pode ser manipulada e satisfação do usuário ao usá-la, dentre outros atributos. Este trabalho relata uma pesquisa feita cujo objetivo foi avaliar atributos de usabilidade das telas de operação de uma unidade de destilação de uma refinaria de petróleo através da medição de satisfação subjetiva e desempenho dos usuários na sua utilização. A avaliação do nível atual de usabilidade do sistema foi realizada através da aplicação de formulários padronizados para o pessoal de operação, engenharia e manutenção envolvidos no desenvolvimento e operação do sistema além de medição do desempenho na execução de tarefas. A pesquisa identificou os grupos mais afetados pela atual configuração da interface, bem como mostrou que os atributos de memorização e eficiência no uso foram aqueles com maiores possibilidades para melhorias. Também como resultado deste trabalho foram identificados alguns pontos que podem ser melhorados para aumentar o desempenho em uso e que podem aumentar a satisfação dos seus usuários. Como conclusão, a pesquisa mostrou que, para o contexto estudado, a freqüência de uso influencia mais o desempenho do usuário que a experiência no uso ou o conhecimento da unidade que a interface controla. Concluiu também que mudanças em pop-up de controladores, posições dos botões de navegação e telas de visualização de alarmes podem melhorar o desempenho e a satisfação dos usuários.

Full textThe current worldwide population growth has been followed by a significant increase in the number of older people. The evolution of the internet has brought an increase in the variety of services that go beyond entertainment and communication. Older adults and elderly people can benet from many such services available on the internet, such as online shopping, banking, governmental services and many other sources of information, in order to preserve their autonomy and independence to undertake their daily activities. However, despite all the benefits brought by the use of the Web, many older adults still present some resistance to use websites. As a consequence of ageing, many older adults may start to present certain difficulties that can jeopardise the way they use the Web, such as sensory, motor, and especially cognitive difficulties. Web accessibility is concerned with providing means to enable people with special needs to use the Web in a natural and independent manner. Older adults tend to be aected with decline in their abilities with time. In order to enrich the experience of older adults and elderly people with the Web, it is essential that the needs of different user proles be taken into account, particularly concerning visual, auditory, motor and cognitive aspects that become more evident from 40 years of age. The goal of the present work is to identify usability and accessibility resources and mechanisms to address the difficulties encountered by large part of older adults that use the Web, in order to help them overcome difficulties associated with ageing and help them continue using the Web as a source of information, communication and services. Much advancement have been achieved with the use of assistive technology, which consists of equipment and software that supports several types of disabilities and provides aids to the use of computer applications and the Web. Many eorts have also been targeted at creating guidelines and standards to incentivise programmers and web authors to produce more accessible Web material. In this thesis, the work developed supports the argument that improvements in the quality of the experience in the use of the Web by older adults also contributes to enhancing universal usability. The research presented involves a literature review, eld observation of users, questionnaires with users, interviews with visually impaired users about their diculties in using websites, and tests with software prototypes. The results showed that the use of mechanisms to support the interaction of older adults with the Web also promotes improvements in the interaction of younger users. Finally, it was possible to diagnose barriers that still remain and which mechanisms had best acceptance by older adults and elderly users

Full textThe Web has a large content of information available to a diverse population of people which may have the more different abilities and requirements. Thus, ensure accessibility to all users is a difficult task, even having an extensive set of recommendations provided by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). So, are proposed different tools for accessibility assessment that contrast the artifacts with guidelines in order to obtain automated results, producing tests and generating various data, such as the location of the problem in the code and the specified faults. To facilitate the processing of such data by providing a common language, the W3C developed the Evaluation and Report Language (EARL). Given the issues about the difficulties of ensuring accessibility to the different profiles of users and the necessity of interpreting the EARL reports, as collaboration for indispensable human review in the context of accessibility testing, this paper proposes a support through an Environment for Analyzing results of Assessments of Accessibility and Usability on the Web (A4U). From the case study conducted, it was possible to validate the A4U environment developed, which includes semiautomatic evaluating results, so that the developer can interpret them and proceed with the manual evaluation of accessibility and usability. Developed in support were considered advancements in accessibility, usability, the correlation between the two concepts and collaboration in the development of a tool called AccessibilityUtil, which is intended to be a source of accessibility practices arising from experiences of developers through collaboration a Web environment relating them to the W3C accessibility guidelines. This research contributed to the consolidation of the issues of accessibility and usability, from the development of A4U, which enables the human evaluation of accessibility and usability, and integration of evaluation results generated by semi-automatic tools, leading the reviewer to produce improvements in both fronts

Pesquisa para verificar o nível de usabilidade de composições tipográficas de textos com quatro fontes ( Rockwell, Garamond, Franklin Gothic e Bodoni ) na tarefa de leitura em suporte de leitura em papel branco e em tela digital ( LCD ). Efetuou-se tal verificação por meio de três parâmetros: eficácia ( teste de assimilação do texto ), eficiência ( tempo de leitura ) e satisfação ( opinião do leitor ), os quais possibilitaram determinar o nível de usabilidade da interface de um objeto dentro de uma escala com intervalo de níveis (Ótimo, Bom, Satisfatório e Péssimo ). Os dados dos grupos amostrais obtidos foram tratados por estatística inferencial, sendo dois grupos para cada uma das fontes tipográficas as quais foram lidas em cada um dos suportes. O texto padronizado utilizado faz parte de um conjunto de textos utilizados na Oftalmologia para testes de velocidade de leitura. Os resultados obtidos permitiram verificar que não há influência significativa no nível de usabilidade de leitura de um texto padronizado composto com diferentes fontes tipográficas. O tempo médio de leitura da amostra foi 51,87 ( ± 16,51 ) segundos, em uma escala que variou de 1-106,13 segundos. O número de acertos médios nas cinco questões do teste de interpretação foi 2,90 ( ± 1,64 ) numa escala de 0-5 acertos. A taxa média de satisfação dos leitores em relação as fontes tipográficas verificadas foi 66,24 % ( ± 20,94 ), numa escala de 0-100%. O método utilizado para se calcular a taxa de usabilidade das fontes foi a média aritmética entre as taxas percentuais dos três parâmetros já descritos. As taxas de usabilidade foram distribuídas na escala de usabilidade de quatro níveis onde se verificou que todas fontes apresentaram uma taxa de usabilidade próxima a 60 %, equivalendo, portanto, a um bom nível de usabilidade. Concluiu-se que os traços comuns das letras e a equiparação da altura-x pode equilibrar o nível de usabilidade de diferentes fontes tipográficas na leitura tarefa.
Research to verify the usability level of typographic compositions of texts with four fonts (Rockwell, Garamond, Franklin Gothic and Bodoni) on the task of reading, as in white paper media reading as in digital display reading (LCD). Such verification was performed by three parameters: effectiveness (interpretation test), efficiency (reading time) and satisfaction (reader's opinion), which had enabled to determine the usability level of the interface of an object within a scale range of levels (Excellent, Good, Satisfying and Poorly). The data sample groups obtained were processed by inferential statistical, being two groups for each of the typographical fonts, which had been read in each media. The standardized text is part of a set of texts used in Ophthalmology to measure the reading speed. The results obtained allowed to verify that there is no influence on reading usability of a standardized text composed with different typographical fonts. The average reading time of the subjects was 51.87 (± 16.51) seconds on a scale ranging from 1 to 106.13 seconds. The average hits on the five questions from the interpretation test was 2.90 (± 1.64) on a scale 0-5 hits. The average rate of satisfaction of the readers about the typographic fonts checked was 66.24% (± 20.94), on a scale of 0-100%. The average rate of the readers satisfaction regarding the verified typefaces was 66.24% (± 20.94), on a scale of 0-100% of the three parameters already mentioned. The usability rates were distributed in a four-level usability scale, where it was found that all the fonts showed a close usability rate near to 60%, indicating a good level of usability. It concluded that the commonality between letterforms and equalization of x-height balances the level of usability among different fonts in task reading.

Full textO desenvolvimento sustentável tem sido um tema cada vez mais debatido nos dias que correm. Com a crescente preocupação com este tema, a necessidade de arranjar formas de combater tudo o que é uma afronta ao consumo e produção irresponsáveis, é cada vez maior. O objetivo deste trabalho é dar resposta ao problema do desperdício dentro da comunidade do ISEG. Deste modo, foi proposto um mercado virtual sustentável que tem como objetivo proporcionar a troca de bens/serviços entre toda a população que faz parte do Instituto Superior de Economia e Gestão, de forma a consciencializar a população alvo para a reutilização de recursos e para o combate ao desperdício. No seguimento da proposta da solução conceptual, a mesma foi implementada recorrendo a um software open source. Como forma de avaliar se a solução era adequada para solucionar o problema descrito inicialmente, a mesma foi utilizada e avaliada por um conjunto limitado de utilizadores (alunos do Mestrado em Métodos Quantitativos para a Decisão Económica e Empresarial). A análise e avaliação da usabilidade da solução proposta revelam que esta consegue dar resposta, de forma positiva, ao problema apresentado.
Sustainable development has been an increasingly debated topic these days. With the growing concern with this issue, the need to find ways to combat everything that is an affront to irresponsible consumption and production, is increasing. The purpose of this paper is to answer the problem of waste within ISEG's community. In this way it is proposed a virtual sustainable market that aims to provide the exchange of goods/services among the entire population that is part of the Lisbon School of Economics and management, in order to raise the awareness of the target population for the reutilization of resources and for combating waste. Following the proposal of the conceptual solution, it was implemented using open source software. As a way of evaluating whether the solution was adequate to solve the problem described, it was used and evaluated by a limited set of people (students of the Master in Quantitative Methods for Economic and Business Decision). An analysis and evaluation of the usability of the proposed solution, revealing that it is able to give a positive answer to the problem presented.

Full textLa investigación busca identificar las cuestiones relacionadas con los estudios de comunicación en el uso de las interfaces. El estudio se desarrolla con una revisión de la literatura de la Interacción Persona-Computador y Usabilidad. La revisión de la interacción humano-computadora se da teniendo en cuenta tres grandes áreas: Ingeniería de Software, Ingeniería de Factores Humanos y Diseño Gráfico. En este sentido, se trata de un corte en la importancia de la investigación y la comunicación de las propiedades que surgen en las relaciones de apoyo de los sistemas de interfaz y las cualidades y características que determinan el uso de las interfaces. Se observa que, a pesar de las características y propiedades son intrínsecas de comunicación las tecnologías digitales de información, la participación en estos procesos de investigación de la comunicación y la construcción de las tecnologías interactivas son superficiales y ofrecer una cierta distancia de los aspectos tecnológicos. Ha habido, por tanto, que las contribuciones en los aspectos de la interacción entre las interfaces de comunicación del hombre y la máquina con el apoyo de las técnicas y son estrictamente de otros campos del conocimiento, a pesar de la existencia de la teoría matemática de la comunicación y su origen como un medio de comunicación el telégrafo. Por tanto, es la posibilidad de una mayor participación de la comunicación no sólo en las investigaciones relacionadas con la usabilidad de los sistemas interactivos, así como la contribución de sus procesos de desarrollo de sistemas basados en el diálogo.
A pesquisa busca identificar as questões relacionadas aos estudos de Comunicação na Usabilidade de interfaces. O estudo é desenvolvido com revisão bibliográfica da Interação Humano-Computador e da Usabilidade. As revisões da interação humano-computador se dá considerando três principais eixos: Engenharia de software, Engenharia de Fatores Humanos e Design gráfico. Neste sentido, faz-se um recorte na importância das investigações e das propriedades comunicacionais que viriam a surgir nas relações suportadas pela interface de sistemas e das qualidades e características que determinam a usabilidade de interfaces. Observa-se que, apesar das características e propriedades comunicacionais serem intrínsecas as tecnologias digitais da informação, o envolvimento da Comunicação nestes processos de investigação ou construção de tecnologias interativas são superficiais e oferecem certo distanciamento dos aspectos tecnológicos. Denota-se, portanto, que as contribuições sobre aspectos da interação entre homem e máquina suportadas por interfaces comunicacionais são estritamente técnicas e oriundas de outros campos do conhecimento, apesar da existência da Teoria Mátemática da Comunicação e da sua origem em meios técnicos de comunicação como o telégráfo. Verifica-se assim a possibilidade de um maior envolvimento da Comunicação não apenas nas investigações relacionadas à usabilidade de sistemas interativos, como também na contribuição dos seus processos de desenvolvimento de sistemas baseados em diálogos.

Full textWeb Accessibility aims to enable that any individual may understand and interact with a Web page content, regardless of disabilities or other factors. Although there is a large number of research studies in this area, it can be noted individuals with some specific types of disabilities find it more difficulty browsing the Web, such as those who are blind. In order to minimize the problems faced by blind users when browsing the Web, the study reported in this thesis proposed an approach which consists in automatically extracting the navigation knowledge implicit in the visual presentation of a Web page and changing this navigation design to an optimized way to those users. For this purpose, the research started with a review of the papers related to the main problems faced by blind users when interacting to the Web, as well as the specific sets of accessibility and usability guidelines to minimize these problems, based on a systematic mapping study conducted on the topic. After identifying the problems and guidelines, the next step involved the development of a classifier based on the Naïve Bayes methods, considering three features commonly found in the design patterns of navigation menus, in order to automatically classify the links contained on each page into different classes relating to the navigation structures. After developed, the method was tested and assessed in governmental websites through an statistical analysis, showing a good success rate in its classifications. Based on the difficulties encountered during the first step of the research, the study proposed an interface model tailored to blind users who use the Web with the help of a screen reader. Based on the developed classifier, the study proposed an approach to automatically transform the browsing links classified by the method into an optimized navigation standard to screen readers. As a proof of concept, the following step involved a semi-automatic extraction of Web pages content, in order to transform this content to a new proposed interface model. In this context, was developed a prototype of the mechanism, named NavAux. This prototype was evaluated through a cognitive walkthrough. To this, were defined some tasks and the interface operation was performed with support of the JAWS screen reader. The results presented signs that the proposed approach can be considered a viable alternative to minimize the accessibility problems faced by blind users when browsing the Web.

Full textIn essence, this thesis brings a technical compendium to assist in the design of manual wheelchair propulsion, aiming the efficient expansion of ergonomics and user mobility. These recommendation were development from an extensive literature review and application of a usability test with a technological reference wheelchair. The theoretical concepts that underlie this thesis cover the historical and technical context of disability, the ethical assumptions for product design, the design recommendations already established in the scientific literature, the aspects of ease of use under the user-centered design, the motor development of the disabled person, the biomechanics of manual propulsion and related forms of handling such equipment. A systematic methodological research was based on three approaches. The first selected a technological reference from a sample of 101 models of wheelchairs available in the Brazilian market. After select the product, apply a usability test taking into the ISO 20282-2.2006 (E) which enabled us to verify the degree of satisfaction and demonstrate that the wheelchairs are inefficient to attend the ergonomic necessity and mobility of users. In this study 43 subjects took part of test, both genders, on average between 31 and 37 years. Finally, using the software were analyzed Kinovea different patterns of motion of manual propulsion. In the last approach, settled parameters, temporal, anthropometric and postural which served to increase and consolidate new design recommendations. These recommendations cover the five systems that set a wheelchair: (a) propulsion system, (b) displacement, (c) support for the body, (d) structural and (e) morphology. Finally, methodological reflections project, an exploration of the future of wheelchairs in Brazil and some suggestions for research in the field of design for health, which arose during the development of this research.

A obesidade é uma doença de caráter crônico que se caracteriza pelo acúmulo excessivo de gordura no organismo e acarreta graves problemas de saúde, além de transtornos psicológicos e dificuldade de acesso a muitos produtos e equipamentos. Com um crescimento em proporções epidêmicas, vem sendo considerada um dos maiores problemas de saúde na maioria dos países desenvolvidos, com destaque para a obesidade mórbida. Em 1995, o impacto da obesidade para os custos com saúde nos EUA foi de U$ 99,2 bilhões, com cerca de um terço da população apresentando-se acima do peso. No Brasil, em 1994, a obesidade atingia 11% da população e 40,6% das pessoas estavam com sobrepeso. Além do preconceito e discriminação decorrentes de seu aspecto físico, os obesos enfrentam dificuldades na utilização de produtos e equipamentos, pois são projetados para a faixa média da população. Referente a isto, muitas empresas têm investido no aperfeiçoamento de novas tecnologias, entretanto não há normas sobre as características que os produtos devem ter para se adequarem às necessidades físicas e psicológicas dos usuários obesos. Leis e decretos foram criados em algumas cidades referentes a essa problemática, ma ainda são pouco eficazes, pois, não há meios de projetar interfaces confiáveis, adequadas a esse público considerando a ausência de normas técnicas específicas no país...
Obesity is a chronic disease which is characterized by the extreme accumulation of fat in the organism and causes serious health problems, besides psychological disturbances and restrained access to many products and equipments. Whith a growth in epidemic ratios, it has being considered one of the biggest health problems in the majority of the developed countries, with distinction to morbid obesity. In 1995, the impact of the obesity in the health expenses of the U.S.A. was of U$ 99.2 billion, with about one third of the population overweighted. Recently it has been growing quickly also in developing countries due to, among others factors, the dissemination of occidental habits, as sedentarines and ingestion of foods rich in fat and sugar. In Brazil, in 1994, the obesity reached 11% of the population and 40.6% of the people were overweighted. Besides the prejudice and discrimination deriving from its physical aspect, the obese individuals are facing difficulties in using products and equipment, since they are designed for the population average range. Regarding to this, many companies have invested in the improvement of new tecnologies; however there are not norms about the characteristics the products must have to be adjusted to the physical and psychological necessities of the obese users. Laws aqnd decrees had been created in some cities referring to this problem, but still they are little efficient, because there are not ways to design trustworthy and adequate interfaces to this public since there are not specific technical norms in the country...(Complete abstract, click electronic address below)

Full textEste trabalho aborda a utilização dos sítios da World Wide Web (WWW), pelas instituições de ensino superior, para a divulgação dos seus cursos de mestrado. Especificamente, este estudo procura analisar: 1) a informação sobre mestrados que as instituições de ensino superior oferecem, nos seus sítios, aos seus visitantes; 2) até que ponto os sítios têm uma navegação funcional, permitindo ou não ao utilizador localizar rapidamente a informação sobre os mestrados; e 3) verificar se estes sítios recorrem a elementos-padrão da usabilidade. A metodologia utilizada no estudo foi a análise de conteúdo, com base numa grelha de análise, sendo os dados examinados de forma quantitativa. A amostra foi constituída por 14 sítios de instituições de ensino superior que divulgam cursos de mestrado. Dos sítios analisados neste estudo, verificou-se que a maioria disponibiliza informação útil e essencial sobre o curso. Uma parte significativa dos sítios já possibilita candidaturas online, as quais evitam a necessidade do candidato ter se que deslocar à instituição. No que diz respeito à navegação e rapidez de localização da informação detectaram-se situações menos positivas. Nenhum dos sítios apresenta toda a informação sobre o mestrado numa só página, obrigando o utilizador a clicar em novas páginas para obter todos os dados de que necessita. Porém, e de uma forma geral, os sítios estudados recorrem à utilização de elementos-padrão da usabilidade. Considerando o objectivo deste trabalho, poderá concluir-se que os sítios das universidades e institutos superiores portugueses podem ser considerados como instrumentos de divulgação dos cursos, mas com lugar a melhorias no que diz respeito à sua navegação e, consequentemente, localização rápida e fácil da informação. This dissertation looks into the use of the World Wide Web (WWW) by higher education institutions in the promotion of their master degrees. Specifically this work attempts to analyze: 1) the information that the higher education institutions disclose on their websites regarding their master degrees; 2) to which extent the websites have a functional navigation, enabling (or not) to rapidly locate information about the master degrees; and 3) if these websites use standard usability features. The methodology used in this study was content analysis, based on an analysis chart. The findings were examined quantitatively. The sample was composed by 14 websites of higher education institutions that promote master degrees. It was possible to verify that the majority of the websites analyzed in this study disclose useful and essential information regarding the courses. A significant portion of the websites already offers the possibility of online application, which eliminates any need for the applicants to travel to the institution. Regarding navigation and location of information, some less positive situations were encountered. None of the websites offered the total of the data on a single page, forcing the user to click on further pages to attain all the desired information. In general, the studied websites use standard usability features. Considering the objective of this work, it is possible to conclude that the websites of the Portuguese universities and higher education institutes can be deemed as promotional instruments for their courses, however the sites‟ navigation, and, consequently, quick and convenient location of information, can be improved.

In recent years, Web applications have been intensive used in current society, and their user population comprises since young kids to elderly individuals. The success of Web applications can be determined by two features: their fast evolution and their usability. Despite the great evolution of Web applications, users often face errors while using them, caused by not intuitive interfaces. A large proportion of this problem is on the development process of these applications, which sometimes does not embody usability principals and methods. Usability evaluations on Web development processes are often avoided by industry professionals due to their lack of experience in the field. Also, usability evaluation can be expensive in terms of time and human resources. Our motivation consists on assist novice inspectors, such as developers with little knowledge on usability, improving the quality of their Web applications by producing better interfaces, with a lower cost. We developed a new usability inspection technique, called WE-QT (Web Evaluation Question Technique). The WE-QT technique was specifically tailored for usability evaluation of Web applications for novice inspectors. Our technique uses a question based approach to guide the inspectors uncovering usability problems. We adopted an experimental methodology to develop WE-QT. This thesis describes the WE-QT’s creation, a feasibility study and two observational studies. Our goal is to increase the quality of Web applications and improve the user’s interaction in this technology.
Nos últimos anos, aplicações Web têm sido amplamente utilizadas na sociedade, e sua população de usuários compreende desde crianças jovens a idosos. O sucesso das aplicações da Web pode ser determinado por duas características: sua rápida evolução e sua usabilidade. Apesar da grande evolução das aplicações Web, os usuários muitas vezes se deparam com erros ao utilizá-las, causados por interfaces não intuitivas. Grande parte deste problema está no processo de desenvolvimento destas aplicações, que às vezes não incorporam princípios e métodos de usabilidade. Avaliações de usabilidade nos processos de desenvolvimento são muitas vezes evitadas por profissionais da indústria, devido à sua falta de experiência na área, e avaliações de usabilidade podem ser caras em termos de tempo e de recursos humanos. A motivação deste trabalho consiste em ajudar os inspetores novatos, tais como desenvolvedores com pouco conhecimento em usabilidade, a melhorar a qualidade de suas aplicações Web, com um custo menor. Foi desenvolvida uma nova técnica de inspeção de usabilidade, chamada WE-QT (Web Evaluation Question Technique). A técnica WE-QT foi desenvolvida especificamente para avaliação de usabilidade de aplicações Web por inspetores novatos. A WE-QT utiliza uma abordagem baseada em perguntas para orientar os inspetores a detectar defeitos de usabilidade. Foi adotada uma metodologia experimental para desenvolver WE-QT. Esta dissertação descreve a criação da WE-QT, um estudo de viabilidade e dois estudos de observação. Nosso objetivo é aumentar a qualidade de aplicações Web e melhorar a interação do usuário nesta tecnologia.

Full textAtualmente a informação é um recurso muito importante nas organizações, de tal modo que, o diferencial das empresas, a competitividade e o seu sucesso está ligado à valorização que dão à informação e ao Sistema de Informação (SI), termo utilizado para descrever um sistema que abrange pessoas, máquinas, e/ou métodos organizados para coletar, processar, transmitir e disseminar dados que representam informação para o utilizador. Portanto, com o intuito de assegurar que o SI esteja protegido ao máximo contra a quebra da confidencialidade, contra o comprometimento da integridade e contra a indisponibilidade de acesso aos recursos, as organizações investem na Segurança da Informação. Um SI deve ser projetado tendo em atenção o utilizador em cenário de utilização, nomeadamente, a facilidade de utilização. Neste âmbito, surge usabilidade como característica do SI com objetivo de assegurar-se que a sua utilidade e a qualidade da interação se adequem aos requisitos dos utilizadores, às atividades da tarefa e ao contexto em que será utilizado. O principal objetivo desta dissertação foi procurar avaliar os impactos da implementação da Segurança da Informação na usabilidade dos SI, isto é, após implementação da Segurança da Informação, perceber as alterações positivas ou negativas na facilidade de utilização dos SI. Neste âmbito, para caracterizar o problema em estudo, foi realizado um enquadramento teórico que discorreu sobre, Informação, Sistemas de Informação e Tecnologias da Informação e Comunicação, abordou também sobre a introdução ao conceito de Usabilidade e Segurança da Informação. Também foi feita a descrição da relevância da Usabilidade no contexto da Segurança da Informação, dando importância ao fator humano como o principal elemento para a segurança em cenário de utilização do SI. Optou-se pela realização de um caso de estudo numa empresa angolana de telecomunicações. Para a recolha dos dados foram feitos inquéritos por questionário entregue aos colaboradores que estão há vários anos na organização e que viram a implementação da Segurança da Informação podendo descrever as alterações ao nível da segurança e da usabilidade do SI. Actually, information is a very important resource into organizations. By the way, the companies differential, competitiveness and success are related to the value given to the information and Information System (IS), which is used to describe a system that includes people as well as machines and organized methods to collect, process, transmit and disseminate data representing information for the user. Then, because the goal of the companies is to ensure that de IS is protected against the confidentiality, risk of integrity and inaccessibility to the resources, the organizations invest in information security. An Information System must be designed according to the user, to make it easily useful. IS has a characteristic which objective is to ensure that its usefulness and quality of interaction match with the user, with the work activities and with the context that it will be used. The main objective of this dissertation is to evaluate the impact of the Information Security using the IS, that is, after the implementation of the Information Security, to understand the positive and negative changes on how the IS are used. Characterizing the problem, in case, a theoretical framework was developed around the Information, around the Information System and around Information of technology and communication. An introduction was given to understand better the concepts of Usefulness and Information Security. One also, described the relevance of Usefulness in the context of Information System, pointing to the importance of Human factor as the main element for the security when IS is used. We chose to carry out the case study, a firm of telecommunication in Angola. The data used was collected by using questionnaires answered by the collaborators who work for long in the firm, once they have seen the implementation of the security of the information what make them able to describe the changes on security and usefulness of IS. The same questionnaire was applied to those collaborators that work for the firm for not so long, in spite of that, they still can describe the positive and negative impacts of security using IS, making it easily used.

Resumo: Como utilizar um edifício de maneira eficiente, eficaz e satisfatória? Esta questão envolve atributos de qualidade funcional e facilidade de uso, aliados ao desenho universal entendido como valor de utilidade, eficiência e conforto do espaço construído amplamente utilizável. Esta pesquisa coloca-se na interface entre componentes da acessibilidade espacial e avaliação heurística, como método de inspeção sistemático de usabilidade. O objetivo geral é analisar o potencial de aplicação de uma avaliação heurística modificada como método de inspeção de usabilidade universal, aliada ao percurso pluralístico. A partir do assunto proposto e do contexto no qual se insere, optou-se por realizar um estudo de caso com avaliação através do método baseado em heurísticas modificado em conformação aos princípios do Desenho Universal, em Centro Comercial Planejado, caso selecionado devido à complexidade espacial e escala. A avaliação é composta por três sessões consecutivas: na sessão I, pré-entrevista, cinco avaliadores especialistas interdisciplinares na área de arquitetura e construção foram convidados a responder um formulário, entrevista estruturada, através da análise dos projetos arquitetônicos do centro comercial planejado (plantas, cortes e elevações) em relação aos princípios do desenho universal e acessibilidade espacial; em seguida, na sessão II, atividades em cenários, foi solicitado a cada avaliador responder novamente o formulário durante a realização de atividades pré-definidas; na sessão final, sessão III, pós-entrevista, foram respondidos novamente os formulários em uma reanálise dos projetos arquitetônicos. Procurando a utilização de diferentes tipos de habilidades e experiências, a pesquisa utilizou da associação entre a avaliação heurística modificada ao método de inspeção ou percurso pluralístico, colocando o usuário consumidor na execução de cenários pré-definidos. Os resultados demonstraram que a avaliação heurística modificada pode integrar com eficácia a avaliação de projeto antes do fato e na avaliação pós-ocupação, propiciando interação entre análise de projeto arquitetônico e uso do espaço e instalações. O percurso pluralístico permitiu a avaliação de satisfação e preferências do usuário. Através de um processo de avaliação de uma comissão de avaliadores interdisciplinares, processo iterativo combinado com sessões, é possível assegurar uma taxa de erro reduzida para o uso universal de ambientes construídos. A despeito da extensa literatura sobre engenharia da usabilidade, há pouca pesquisa sobre métodos para aplicação de testes de usabilidade em um contexto do projeto arquitetônico. Desse modo, destaca-se a necessidade de estudos mais aprofundados sobre usabilidade universal e sua utilização na concepção de ambientes inclusivos. Esta pesquisa apresentou-se como um passo inicial para a avaliação de usabilidade universal na arquitetura e recomenda testes aplicados ao contexto arquitetônico, pois estes ressaltam a importância de análise de elementos interdependentes no ambiente construído e devem ser implementados ao processo de projeto universal
Abstract: How to use a building in an efficient, effective and satisfactory way? This issue involves functional quality and ease of use attributes, allied to universal design understood as a value of utility, efficiency and convenience of the widely usable constructed space. This research stands itself in the interface between components of spatial accessibility and heuristic evaluation, as a method for systematic usability inspection. The main goal is to analyze the application potential for a heuristic evaluation modified as a universal usability inspection method allied to the pluralistic method of inspection. From the proposed subject and the context in which it is in, it was decided to conduct a study case with the method evaluation based on heuristics modifying in conformation to the Universal Design principles, in Planed Commercial Center, the case was chosen due to spatial and scale complexities. The evaluation is composed of three consecutive sessions. In session I, pre-interview, five expert interdisciplinary evaluators in the area of architecture and construction were invited to answer a form, structured interview, through the analysis of planed commercial center¿s architectonic projects (plans, sections and elevations) concerning of the universal design principles and spatial accessibility; next, in session II , activities in settings, each expert was asked to perform a set of pre-defined activities in settings; post-interview, the forms were answered again in a reanalysis for the architectonic projects. Using different types of abilities and experiences, the research will associate modified heuristic evaluation with the pluralistic method of inspection, placing the user consumer in the pre-defined settings execution. The results showed that the modified heuristic evaluation could instate effectively the project evaluation before the fact and in the post-occupation evaluation, providing interaction between the architectonic project analysis and the space and installations use. The pluralistic method of inspection allowed the user¿s satisfaction and preferences evaluation. Through an interdisciplinary evaluator¿s committee evaluation progress, interactive process combined with sessions, it is possible to assure a reduced error rate to the constructed environments universal use. In spite of extensive literature about usability engineering, there has been little research on the methods to conduct usability tests in a context of architectural design. Therefore, further studies on universal usability and its use in inclusive environment are of paramount importance. This research presented itself as an initial step for the universal usability evaluation in architecture, recommends applied tests to the architectonic context, because these highlight the importance of interdependent elements analysis inside the constructed environment, and must be implemented to the universal project process

This study shows the relation between the importance of how digital designers practice their theoric knowledgments, nowadays people live technological changes and technologic inovations, mainly with smartphones, that are considered a technological revolution, the strongest impact of last times, after Internet advents and social medias. The interaction acts through of apps interfaces, there is a prevision that until 2016, 300 billions of apps will be developmented having a big research base. The goal of this study is helps Brazilian researches. The main of issues in health researches is people with cardiacs problems. The focus of this study was to show apps that describes characteristics of the people that want to have good health. Yet it is important show that this research has not relation to medical aspect. The methodology of this study establishes an analysis of many theoric thoughts about apps and its application for the designers that development interfaces of apps. The ideas of many authors are presented here and their studies about design and interaction. This study presents, moreover, some aspects that are not considered in a critical analysis for the reason that it was presently a short study that shows only the results and the importance that digital designer has in a academic knowledge to develops interfaces that not follow concepts of theoretic students. The main is to show how an app can be faster and more efficient than if it could not obey the rules, although in a specific objective
Esta dissertação é pautada na importância de como os designers digitais colocam em prática os seus conhecimentos teóricos, em um momento que estamos vivendo em constantes e aceleradas mudanças de inovações tecnológicas, especialmente com os smartphones, que é considerado como a revolução tecnológica de maior impacto nos últimos tempos, após a causada pela internet e pelas redes sociais. Nos smartphones a interação se dá através das interfaces dos aplicativos, que já podem estar instalados ou serem baixados pela internet. Existe uma previsão que até 2016, 300 bilhões de aplicativos serão desenvolvidos, tendo uma grande base de pesquisa. O objetivo deste trabalho é de também colaborar no que os brasileiros consideram que deva ser prioridade, que são os serviços de saúde, onde o mais grave do Brasil são os cardíacos. Assim, o foco foi em abordar os aplicativos que em sua descrição têm características que podem servir para o monitoramento da saúde cardíaca do usuário. É importante salientar que este estudo não tem nenhuma relação do aspecto médico. Esta pesquisa propõe a análise de como foi aplicado pelos designers que desenvolveram as interfaces dos aplicativos aqui apresentados, os conceitos de vários autores relacionados ao design, usabilidade e interação, como também um levantamento de alguns aspectos que não foram considerados através de uma análise crítica que foi curta, o que evidencia o resultado obtido, da relevância do designer digital ter o conhecimento acadêmico para o desenvolvimento de interfaces, não sendo possível imaginar como funcionaria interfaces que não obedecesse os conceitos dos estudiosos, que tornam o tempo de execução de uma tarefa muito mais rápida e eficiente do que se o aplicativo não obedecesse estas regras, salvo que seja um aplicativo experimental com este objetivo específico

O mercado da moda se caracteriza pela forte dinamicidade e pelo vertiginoso quadro de novas tendências. Somado a isso, o fortalecimento do poder crítico do consumidor, devido ao fácil acesso às informações de moda e estilo oriundas do mundo inteiro, intensifica ainda mais as questões pertinentes à evolução do setor têxtil e de confecção. Para tanto, algumas empresas desse setor procuram na segmentação de seus consumidores e usuários a adequação necessária para o sucesso de seus produtos. Na tentativa de se adequar aos novos hábitos de consumo e experimentação do produto de moda, lançam mão de linguagens simbólicas diferenciadas e atualizadas, além de recursos tecnológicos avançados. Contudo, muitas vezes, as qualidades físicas dos produtos de moda, em especial do vestuário, podem gerar conflitos quanto à sua interpretação e usabilidade, uma vez que, durante sua fase de concepção, os aspectos biopsicossociais de seus usuários específicos não são considerados. No que se refere ao universo feminino, os aspectos físicos e emocionais decorrentes do processo de envelhecimento, mais especificamente climatério e menopausa, podem influenciar na percepção de usabilidade do vestuário. Considerando tal hipótese, o presente estudo propôs identificar se as variações biopsicossociais e as reconfigurações plásticas do corpo das mulheres de meia idade (e os recursos que estes indivíduos utilizam para contornar os problemas psicossociais) influenciam a percepção de usabilidade do vestuário. Para responder essa questão, foi elaborado e aplicado um questionário que considerou, entre outros aspectos: a identificação dos indivíduos; suas características físicas e psicológicas; sua percepção quanto às alterações biopsicossociais decorrentes do climatério-menopausa; sua avaliação subjetiva quanto às características físicas, ergonômicas e estéticas dos produtos do vestuário encontrados atualmente no mercado; e sua avaliação quanto à importância do produto de moda em sua reconfiguração corpórea. Adicionalmente, o questionário também possibilitou a verificação dos aspectos subjetivos e emocionais vinculados aos fatores de aquisição de produtos do vestuário, evidenciando assim, percepções e expectativas do segmento em questão com relação aos padrões de consumo de moda. Pode-se verificar, por meio dos resultados alcançados, que tais alterações biopsicossociais podem influenciar a percepção das mulheres de meia idade quanto aos aspectos de usabilidade, bem como sua avaliação emocional e subjetiva com relação ao vestuário.
Strong dynamism and new trends characterize the fashion market. Added to this, the strengthening of consumer critical perspective, due to the easy access to the arising fashion and style information from around the world, further intensifies the issues related to the evolution of textile and clothing sector. Therefore, some companies of the sector search through the consumers and users segmentation the necessary adjustments to the success of their products. In an attempt to adapt to the new habits of consumption and experimentation of the fashion product, the companies and industries make use of differentiated and updated symbolic languages, and advanced technological resources. However, often the physical qualities of fashion products, especially clothing, can create conflict in relation to its interpretation e usability, once during its conception fase, the biophysical aspects of its specific users are not considered. As regards the female universe, the physical and emotional aspects of the aging process, specifically menopause may influence the perception of clothing usability. Considering this hypothesis, the present study aimed to identify whether the biopsychosocial variations and the plastic reconfigurations of the body of middle-aged women (and resources that these individuals use to deal with the psychosocial problems) influence the perception of clothing usability. To answer this question, a questionnaire was designed and applied considering some aspects such as: individual identification; physical and psychological characteristics; perception about the psychosocial changes resulting from menopause; subjective assessment in regard the physical, ergonomic and aesthetic characteristics of the clothing product currently found on the market; and the assessment of the importance of fashion product in body reconfiguration. It was observed, through the achieved results, that such biopsychosocial changes can influence the perception of middle-aged women in regard of the aspects of usability, as well as their emotional and subjective assessment regarding clothing.

Full textThis study investigates the recognition of the journalistic media of Brazil's e-reader's tablet and in particular the Kindle and iPad in Brazilian journalism, developing a semiotic analysis of the transition from print newspapers to this digital platform, the graphic codes that are used in the printed newspapers transposed to the digital media, the habit of reading newspaper, usability and the available gadgets in the market in this period of research, and lifting of the technical characteristics and features that they have. The analysis questions the impact that these digital medias can on the print media and about the Rule of 30% theorized by Alan Mutter. This study focuses on interviews with the editores of the newspaper Zero Hora, Pioneiro, Diário Catarinense, Jornal de Santa Catarina, A Notícia, Diário de Santa Maria, O Globo and Estadão. Finally, it examines how this movement of electronic information can lead information to the readers in another way, opening new opportunities for newspaper companies and how these are noticing this.

Full textNuma era em que a WWW se tornou uma ferramenta indispensável, é importante avaliar os seus impactos. No caso do comércio online, a WWW é uma plataforma essencial para conectar clientes e vendedores. A crescente utilização deste canal evidencia a necessidade de desenvolver websites usáveis, pois são cruciais no sucesso de um e-business. No entanto, não existe na literatura um consenso quanto às métricas, constructos e linhas orientadoras para avaliar a usabilidade em websites, sendo também limitada a existência de estudos empíricos que avaliem o impacto da usabilidade no comportamento do consumidor. Este estudo pretende em primeiro lugar identificar e validar empiricamente os constructos de usabilidade mais relevantes propostos na literatura antecedente. Em segundo lugar compreender de que forma a usabilidade tem impacto no comportamento do consumidor, aplicando o teste a um caso real - o da Ticketline. Para atingir estes objetivos, é desenvolvido um modelo teórico com base em modelos anteriores, onde foram realizadas algumas adaptações de forma a avaliar o impacto individual de cada constructo da usabilidade na Satisfação e consequentemente na Intenção de Uso. Foram também analisadas neste estudo as redes nomológicas estabelecidas entre os constructos da usabilidade em websites. Os resultados obtidos salientam o Conteúdo Relevante e Legibilidade como os fatores com maior impacto na Satisfação, e descobriram ainda a sua influência indireta na Intenção de Uso. Por fim são ainda fornecidas implicações teóricas e práticas que podem ajudar a Ticketline na compreensão do comportamento dos consumidores e na consequente tomada de decisões no seu website.
We live in an era in which the web has become an indispensable tool and so it's important to analyse its impacts. When it comes to e-commerce the web is an essential platform for consumers and sellers. This exponential growth has showed the need to develop usable websites are crucial in a successful e-business. Despite its acknowledged importance there isn't a consensus about the metrics, constructs and guidelines for usability. There is also a shortage of empirical studies that analyse the impact of the usability in the behaviour of the online consumer. This study aims to identify and empirically validate the more relevant constructs of usability used in the precedent literature. This study also aims to understand how this usability can impact the consumer's behaviour by applying the results on a real case study - Ticketline. To accomplish this goal, a theoretical model will be developed based on previous models, with some adaptations, so that the individual impact of each of the constructs can be analysed - first when it comes to Satisfaction and then to the Intention to Use. The nomological networks that are established between the constructs of usability on websites were also deliberated in this study. The results showed that the categories Relevant Content and Readability were the factors that had more impact on Satisfaction and they had also indirectly influenced Intention to Use. Lastly this study facilitates guidelines and useful information that help the development of more usable websites thus enriching the users' online buying experience.

Full textThe constant evolution of the Web has proven to be a worldwide phenomenon that quickly needs to address the various segments of current society (websites and web applications, government, banks, entertainment and others). In this context, it is necessary that the Web content provides the possibility of access to the different user profiles, regardless of their disabilities or special needs. Another worldwide phenomenon is the aging population. The senescent users (people who are in the aging process, which leads to gradual physical and mental decline, usually occurring in individuals from the age of 60) have some of their capacities limited and they face barriers to interact with services and content available on the Web. This population has shown a high growth rate in this century in comparison to what was observed in past generations. Despite of the demands for specific legislation, recommendations and guidelines that assist the development of content accessible and usable, there are still many problems of accessibility and usability that need to be solved, given the rapid technological advances seen in the current Web resources. In particular, there is little attention to the difficulties that senescent users have, given that most websites are designed considering target audience that usually is composed of young people and specialists, often trained to interact on websites. Therefore, it is important to support evaluation of Web pages, to meet the requirements of senescent users. The purpose of this project is to develop a support for the evaluation of web accessibility and usability, focusing on the older people, in order to provide clear feedback to developers and experts. This support was prepared by a Checklist that was developed based on scientific procedures, and analyzes on its application.

This work went about the usability, learning and didactic mapping in a LMS (Learning Management System) seeking to find the possible integration between learning and usability in the virtual environment of the Project Tecnologia Trabalho e Educação em Rede de Inclusão Social e Digital. The research was carried out on Infocentro Estação Central with a group of students aged 13 to 17. The activities went on in the lab following studant s dayles routine. The project digital inclusion as a way to promote social inclusion and formation for work where it is understood that it is not enough learning how to landle a tool but the development of attitudes which will take to the development of a collective intelligence. For that matter the present dissertation tries to analyze the virtual environment as a mediator in the construction of knowledge.
O presente trabalho desenvolve um estudo sobre a Inclusão digital, usabilidade, e transposições didáticas em ambiente virtual de ensino e aprendizagem, procurando verificar a usabilidade e as transposições didáticas no ambiente virtual do Projeto Tecnologia, Trabalho e Educação em Rede de Inclusão Social e Digital. A pesquisa se desenvolve no Infocentro Estação Central com um grupo de estudantes na faixa etária de 13 a17 anos. As atividades são desenvolvidas no laboratório que é a sala de aula, seguindo a rotina do dia-a-dia dos estudantes. O projeto utiliza a inclusão digital como caminho para promover a inclusão social através do curso Inclusão Digital e Formação para o Trabalho, entendendo que não basta aprender apenas o manuseio da ferramenta e sim o desenvolvimento de atitudes que levem ao desenvolvimento uma inteligência coletiva. Para a presente dissertação procura analisar o ambiente virtual como recurso mediador na construção do conhecimento.

There is currently a great concern with the aging population, as there is a striking present aspect, which is the lack of perception of the elderly in society and the consequent indifference to their hindrances and restrictions. Amongst these various hindrances, one that grows the most with the advancement of technology is the one pertaining to the interaction with the interfaces of several types of devices; in particular in self-service ATMs, whose interfacial elements somehow do not satisfy the elderly user during their operations. The main objective of this research is to analyze the interactive aspects of a self-service ATM interface of a Brazilian bank, considering the perception of elderly individuals in the city of São Luís, Maranhão. To evaluate the interaction, the proposed methodology to be carried out was based on the participative design approach and was divided in three situations, these being the initial exploration, the discovery process and the prototyping. In order to achieve results, techniques such as questionnaires, focus groups and usability tests were employed using a paper prototype with the purpose of validating the suggested hypothesis, and thus results and requirements were generated for the adequacy of elements present in these interfaces. The main results achieved were the identification of the main executed tasks, which are withdrawal and balance consultation. Another result was the identification of the main interactive difficulties, in which it was observed that the biggest one was the short time of the transition of the screens, and, through the test with the prototype, it was detected that the placements of some items are not satisfactory for the users.
Há atualmente uma grande preocupação com a população idosa, visto que atualmente existe uma característica acentuada, que é a ausência de percepção do idoso na sociedade e a consequente despreocupação com seus bloqueios e suas restrições. Dentre os diversos bloqueios, um dos que mais crescem com o avanço da tecnologia é o da interação com as interfaces de diversos tipos de dispositivos, particularmente nos caixas de autoatendimento, cujos elementos interfaciais não satisfazem, de algum modo, o usuário idoso durante sua utilização. O objetivo principal desta pesquisa é analisar a interação da interface do caixa de autoatendimento de um banco brasileiro, considerando a percepção de indivíduos idosos da cidade de São Luís, no Maranhão. Para avaliar a interação, foi proposta uma metodologia que foi realizada com base na abordagem do design participativo e dividiu-se em três situações, sendo elas a exploração inicial, o processo de descoberta e a prototipação. Para atingir resultados, aplicaram-se técnicas como questionários, grupos focais e testes de usabilidade utilizando um protótipo de papel com o propósito de validar a hipótese sugerida, e com isso geraram-se resultados e requisitos para a adequação de elementos presentes nessas interfaces. Os principais resultados alcançados foram a identificação das principais tarefas realizadas que são saque e consulta de saldo. Outro resultado alcançado foi a identificação das principais dificuldades de interação, nas quais observou-se que a maior delas foi o tempo curto da passagem das telas, e a partir do teste com o protótipo, observou-se que os posicionamentos de alguns itens não são satisfatórios para os indivíduos.

Este estudo aborda aspectos relativos à contribuição da Tecnologia Assistiva para a educação, acesso à informação e processos sociais para pessoas cegas. Apresenta o Portactil, plataforma de acessibilidade baseada em dispositivos móveis (tablets) associado a um dispositivo para leitura em Braille chamado Mouse Braille. O objetivo principal do estudo foi avaliar a usabilidade do Portactil enquanto plataforma para a escrita e a leitura de textos em áudio e em Braille. A pesquisa foi dividida em dois estudo: Estudo 1: Avaliação da usabilidade do Portactil: opinião de professores das Salas de Recursos Multifuncionais de escolas públicas municipais; Estudo 2: Avaliação da usabilidade do Portactil: opinião de alunos e professores cegos de Associação de Apoio a cegos. No estudo 1 participaram 68 professores das Salas de Recursos Multifuncionais de escolas públicas. Para a coleta de dados desse estudo foi realizado um minicurso de formação com os professores e a seguir eles responderam a um questionário de usabilidade com perguntas fechadas e abertas. Os dados do questionários foram tabulados e transformados em notas, sendo a pontuação máxima dez pontos. Os dados qualitativos foram classificados quanto aos aspectos positivos e negativos da plataforma. A análise quantitativa da usabilidade indicaram as seguintes médias: eficiência de uso 6,71; facilidade de aprendizado 5,94; facilidade de memorização 5,65; baixa taxa de erros 5,43; satisfação subjetiva 6,46; ergonomia 7,32 e usabilidade geral 6,24 pontos. A análise qualitativa mostrou que a plataforma necessita de modificações, principalmente em relação ao Mouse Braille e ao processo de edição de textos e manipulação de arquivos. No estudo 2 participaram 2 professores cegos e 7 alunos cegos de Associação de Auxílio aos cegos. Inicialmente foi realizado o minicurso de formação e a seguir utilizado questionário e entrevista para a coleta de dados. Os dados do questionários foram tabulados e transformados em notas, sendo a pontuação máxima dez pontos. Os dados qualitativos foram classificados quanto aos aspectos positivos e negativos da plataforma. Os resultados do estudo 2 indicaram médias: eficiência de uso 7,0; facilidade de aprendizado 4,5; facilidade de memorização 5,3; baixa taxa de erros 4,5; satisfação subjetiva 4,5; ergonomia 6,3 e usabilidade geral 5,4 pontos. A análise qualitativa indicou a necessidade de modificações principalmente em relação ao uso integrado entre o Tablet e o Mouse Braille. Conclui-se que existe necessidade de melhorias no aplicativo e sugere-se o uso do Mouse Braille como ferramenta de auxílio à alfabetização e a realização de pesquisa sobre a quantidade mínima de células Braille que permitam a leitura e escrita com eficiência e satisfação.
This study approaches aspects related to Assistive Technology for education, access to information and social processes to the blind. It presents Portactil, an accessibility platform based upon tablets associated to a device named Braille Mouse. The main objective of this research was to evaluate the usability of Portactil as a platform for writing and reading audio texts in Braille. The thesis was divided into two studies: Study 1: Evaluation of Portactil usability: teachers' opinions from public schools multifunctional resource classrooms; Study 2: Evaluation of Portactil usability: Opinions of blind students and teachers from Blind Support Association. In Study 1, 68 public school multifunctional resource classroom teachers took part. To collect data, a teacher training short term course was offered and after they answered a usability questionnaire contained closed and open questions. Questionnaire data were tabled and transformed into grades up to ten scores. Qualitative data were ranked as negative or positive. Usability quantitative analysis showed the following averages: 6,71 use efficiency; user friendly; 5,94; memorization propensity: 5,65; low error range: 5,43; subjective satisfaction: 6,46; ergonometric: 7,32 and general usability: 6,24. Qualitative analysis showed that the platform needs modifications mainly when it comes to the Braille Mouse and to editing text process and file manipulation. There were 2 blind teachers and 7 blind students from Blind Support Association. At first, a short term course was offered and then, a questionnaire and an interview were applied to collect data. Data questionnaire were tabled and transformed into grades up to ten scores. Qualitative data were ranked as platform positive and negative aspects. Results of Study 2 indicated the following averages: use efficiency: 7,0; Learning propensity: 4,5; Memorization propensity: 5,3; Low error range: 4,5; Subjective satisfaction: 4,5; ergonometric: 6,3 and general usability: 5,4. Qualitative analysis indicated modification need mainly related to integrated use between tablet and Braille Mouse.

L'inclusion en croissance de l'informatique dans l'enseignement propicie, dans le cyberespace, l'apparition des nouveaux espaces d'élargissement de la connaissance. L'Atmosphère virtuelle d'apprentissage, comme on le connaît, rend disponible les plus diverses ressources qui promeuvent le processus d'enseignement et d'apprentissage dans le réseau mondial de communication et de information- l'Internet - en redimensionant l'apprentissage en ligne. L'usabilité entre en contact par le plan physique, percepteur et cognitif, facilitant l'utilisation de ces atmosphères virtuelles. Donc, cette dissertation présente l'importance de l'usabilité de l'atmosphère virtuelle d'apprentissage Moodle, concentrant leurs aspects technologiques et pédagogiques. C'est pourquoi, l'objectif était de mesurer l'indice de satisfaction des utilisateurs, par rapport à l'interface d'AVA. Cette analyse a été faite a travers les catégories générales et spécifiques selon l'échelle de Likert du type de concordance. La recherche utilise encore les méthodes suivantes de collecte de données : des recherches bibliographiques, des recherches documentaires, des questionnaires et des interviews. La dissertation se tourne, tout de même, vers la compréhension de l'origine et du concept de l'enseignement à distance, de la communication par l'Internet, des atmosphères virtuelles en ligne et de l'interface et usabililité d'AVA'S. Les résultats ont montré que tous les attributs d'usabilité sont qualifiés dans des niveaux au-dessus de la moyenne, pourtant, considérés bons. On a conclu que le Moodle présente un bon usabilité du à sa performance et à la satisfaction evidencié par les enseignants, les médiateurs et les étudiants examinés, ce qui caracterise une bonne médiation pédagogique.
A crescente inclusão da informática na Educação, propicia, no ciberespaço, o surgimento de novos espaços de ampliação do conhecimento. O Ambiente virtual de aprendizagem (AVA), como é conhecido, disponibiliza os mais diversos recursos que promove o processo de ensino e aprendizagem na rede mundial de comunicação e informação a internet redimensionando o aprendizado on-line. A usabilidade entra em contato por meio do plano físico, perceptivo e cognitivo, facilitando o uso desses ambientes virtuais. Portanto esta dissertação apresenta a importância da usabilidade do ambiente virtual de aprendizagem Moodle, focando seus aspectos tecnológicos e pedagógicos. Por essa razão, o objetivo foi medir o índice de satisfação dos usuários, em relação à interface do AVA. Essa análise foi através das categorias gerais e especificas de acordo com a escala de Likert do tipo de concordância. A pesquisa utiliza ainda os seguintes métodos de coleta de dados: pesquisa bibliográfica, pesquisa documental, questionário e entrevista. A dissertação volta-se, ainda, para a compreensão da origem e conceito da educação a distância, da comunicação através da internet, dos ambientes virtuais on-line e da interface e usabilidade dos AVA‟s. Os resultados mostraram que todos os atributos de usabilidade estão qualificados em níveis acima da média, considerados bons. Concluído que o Moodle apresenta boa usabilidade qualificada através da evidenciação do bom desempenho e da boa satisfação dos docentes, mediadores e alunos investigados, revertendo-se a investigação em uma boa mediação pedagógica.

Full textThis Thesis deals with the usability in some sites of hotels placed in a specific region of Brazil. Usability is the property of a site that shows how it allows the user get all information available without a large effort and in a clear and objective way. A questionnaire was used as a tool to value, by the common user perspective, navigation, on line reservation simulation, appreciation of the available content and, by this way, an easiness in the interaction site-users. As a result, it is possible to say that, considering all material analyzed, those sites that present usability criterion are more interactive and dynamic, demonstrating an easy navigation in a users view. By other side, it was possible to note that, about heuristics used in the search, the most of the websites demonstrated a deficiency in questions as firmness, user control and how to avoid mistakes. There was still valued as deficiency by the most of users in websites the general characters and the view of user. It was presented, seeing general characters, that a big part of the websites needs tools that can make user rapidly find what looks for. It was yet possible to see that users don't believe in secret when websites ask them some information. This is a point that needs to be appreciated because it causes some insecurity during navigation
A pesquisa teve como objetivo avaliar a usabilidade de websites de hot?is de cidades tur?sticas da regi?o nordeste do Brasil. Um question?rio foi usado como ferramenta para avaliar, a partir da perspectiva do usu?rio comum, a navegabilidade, a simula??o de reservas on line, a compreens?o dos conte?dos dispon?veis e a facilidade de intera??o do site com os usu?rios. Ao final do trabalho, constatou-se que, quanto ?s heur?sticas, a maioria dos websites apresentou v?rias car?ncias no que diz respeito ? consist?ncia, ao controle do usu?rio e ? preven??o de erros. As caracter?sticas gerais e de percep??o do usu?rio foram tamb?m, em grande parte dos sites analisados, conceituadas como regulares pelos avaliadores. Full textThe purpose of this work is to develop a set of user experience (UX) guidelines to guide the design of newspapers’ websites for smartphones. In order to do so, the research is divided in two content blocks which correspond with two main objectives: 1) on the one hand, to extract from the main web design standards the most relevant guidelines for newspapers’ smartphone-‐websites; and 2) to empirically analyse the validity of the selected guidelines in websites developed by newspapers for smartphones. To fulfil the first objective a mapping review is carried out so that a set of relevant standards is gathered and the guidelines they contain are classified and analysed. In this way, it is possible to extract from the literature a set of guidelines whose validity is empirically analysed in newspapers’ smartphone-‐websites conducting usability tests. Resulting guidelines from this two blocks (originating from the literature in the first case, and from the empirical analysis in the second case) make up an UX standard applicable to the design of newspapers’ websites for smartphones as well as to the execution of heuristic evaluations of this type of websites.

Full textEducation has enjoyed the benefits of Computing through the expansion of human knowledge and experience, as well as new types of interaction has been promoted to the extent that technologies advance. This research investigates the quality of human-computer relationship, contextualized use of computational resources, and human factors related to the interaction through features of a virtual learning environment in a post-graduate course by participant observation, in which the technology is a mediator element of dialogic interaction promoted by the pedagogical and teaching action intentionally built. We tried to give voice to individuals so that they evaluate the usability of the technology from their perspective. We used several tools to collect data, such as interview, focus group, forum entries, questionnaire of digital fluency, and questionnaire of perceived usability. These tools have supported the understanding of the impact of didactic dialogue mediatized by interactive computational technologies in the perception of quality of Human-Computer Interaction. The dialectical analysis was based on criteria of technical usability and categories of dialogic interaction of the educational philosophy of Paulo Freire. This study concluded that technical usability is important, but it is not sufficient to support a pedagogical process with computational technology in its fullness. We need to link the technical usability of technological resources and a didactic contextualized on the users and technology resources selected from a virtual learning environment. The teaching benchmarks are focused on methodological rigor, criticality and ongoing reflection on practice with technologies; respect to the knowledge of the students; belief that change is possible, but requires contextualization; culture and digital competence; engagement, freedom and flexibility as well as large and constant readiness for dialogue among different knowledge. This study was expected to provide subsidies that can support the design of educational policies for use of technology in education and evaluating methodologies of human-computer interaction of educational software.

Full textThe main purpose of this study is to verify whether appropriate conditions of technical and pedagogical usability interfere with students' performance in e-learning. Thus, comparisons are made with two distinct types of experiments. In one experiment, the student interacts with a learning material that does not feature any conditions of technical and pedagogical usability; in the other, the student interacts with the learning material with implemented conditions of technical and pedagogical usability. In the process of the experiments suggested by the methodology, the student interacts with the learning material, takes the performance test, and right after assesses the technical and pedagogical usability through the usability evaluation questionnaire. This study provides a basis for technical and pedagogical usability issues regarding categories of usability and specific criteria for e-learning material. Critical points and usability facilitators are also presented based on the students' assessment. Aiming to prove that the technological and pedagogical usability provides a significant performance to e-learning students, we analyzed the significance of the differences among students' performance averages between the two experiments, among performance averages taking into account only answered questions, the correlation between usability and performance, and usability questions significant to the performance. Based on such analyses, one could conclude from the results obtained that, although the significance of all analyses involving the evaluation of the impact of technical and pedagogical usability on performance had not been proven, one could actually prove that usability showed a significant interference with the performance. Other variables, such as age, gender, previous knowledge of the content proposed for the experiment and the opinion on the importance of the content for learning were also analyzed so as to verify possible interferences regarding the students' performance. The variables of gender and previous experience of the proposed content presented a significant interference with the performance of students who utilized the learning material under adequate conditions of technical and pedagogical usability.

Full textTen guidelines for writing UPDs were developed by consulting usability practitioners through two questionnaires and a card sort. These guidelines are (briefly): be clear and avoid jargon, describe problem severity, provide backing data, describe problem causes, describe user actions, provide a solution, consider politics and diplomacy, be professional and scientific, describe your methodology, and help the reader sympathize with the user. A fourth study compared usability reports collected from 44 evaluators, both practitioners and graduate students, watching the same 10-minute UT session recording. Three judges measured problem detection for each evaluator and graded the reports for following 6 of the UPD guidelines.
There was support for existence of an evaluator effect, even when watching pre-recorded sessions, with low to moderate individual thoroughness of problem detection across all/severe problems (22%/34%), reliability of problem detection (37%/50%) and reliability of severity judgments (57% for severe ratings). Practitioners received higher grades averaged across the 6 guidelines than students did, suggesting that the guidelines may be useful for grading reports. The grades for the guidelines were not correlated with thoroughness, suggesting that the guideline grades complement measures of problem detection.
A simulation of evaluators working in groups found a 34% increase in severe problems found by adding a second evaluator. The simulation also found that thoroughness of individual evaluators would have been overestimated if the study had included a small number of evaluators. The final recommendations are to use multiple evaluators in UT, and to assess both problem detection and description when measuring evaluation effectiveness.

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: A multitude of factors affects the experience of the user on a specific site. Slow downloading, navigational difficulties and complex designs all play a role in destroying what could be an enjoyable experience to the user. Usability exists when the design of the system matches what the intended end users need and want. Most Web site designers agree that great design essentially has the user as its priority. Companies tend to forget that the user's hand is on the mouse. The most successful Web sites are those that not only respond to user feedback, but actively seek it out. We have to realise that the cost of flipping to another Web site is so low, it doesn't make any sense for people to go back to a site that failed them the first time. Most Web sites fail miserably at their prime directive: usability. The best way to run a user test is one-on-one, writes Fleming (1998:1). You don't need a large quantity of users for the tests to be effective. The costs in user testing are often exaggerated and there is no excuse for not performing some sort of user test on your Web site. When a page comes up Jakob Nielsen says, people look only one place, in the middle, at the content. (Head, 1999:2) If a page does not appear relevant to the user's current goals, then the user will ruthlessly click the Back button after as little as two to three seconds. Users rarely look at logos, mission statements, slogans, or any other elements they consider fluff. Usability is practically guaranteed if you have a solid information architecture at the outset. Make sure information is not more than two clicks away from the homepage. (Radosevich, 1997:3) According to the GVU7 survey, speed is the number one complaint of Web users (76,5 %). (Hamilton, 1997:1) Since users need web pages to load quickly, you should make your image files small. Try to limit the size of individual images to 5k, and try to limit the total size of all the images on any single page to 20k. Generally, a user with a 28.8 modem should have a sense of the page content or be able to navigate off the page within 10 seconds of download. The rest of the page should load within the next 30 seconds. Any site needs a good search feature since even the best navigation support will never be enough. (Nielsen, 1996a: 1) A search function should be provided if the site has more than 100 pages. Even if you haven't created perfect navigation, at least be consistent. (Berst, 1998: 1) The Back button is the lifeline of the Web user and the second-most used navigation feature (after following hypertext links). People rarely read web pages word by word - they scan pages to find the information they want. Make the text scannable with bulleted lists, highlighted keywords, meaningful headings, and short sections of text. The essential purpose of graphics, especially animated graphics, is to set the tone and communicate the company's personality in a unique and fun way. (Heath, 1997:1)
