Abstract:
The article analyzes the social practices of memorization and ethnicization in the process of post-Soviet transformation of the architectural landscape of the capitals of the Finno-Ugric republics, by the republican elites with the aim of constructing a stable regional identity of the capital’s population on the example of the Republic of Mordovia and the Udmurt Republic. The purpose of the study is to identify the basic social technologies for using the cultural and symbolic aspects of the urban architectural environment, including the historical and cultural heritage, and the newly created elements for the purpose of “memorial management” and to give ethnic flavor, the trends in their evolution and the main results of using such technologies in the post-Soviet period. Based on the data of standardized observation, the intensity of the concentration of ethnicization of the urban architectural environment is compared, the main places of concentration of signs of ethnicity and historical memory in the urban space of Izhevsk and Saransk, common features, strategic features, results and limitations in the research perspective of sociological concepts of identity politics, historical politics, city sociology, public spaces, “places” and “non-places” are identified. The main verbal (language of signs, slogans), monumental (sculpture, commemorative signs, architectural decoration of buildings, stairs, fountains, etc.), visual (social advertising, ethnic symbols in illuminations, holiday decoration of buildings) means of ethnicization of urban environment design are described, as well as architectural images that indicate alternative ethnic strategies for the formation of the capital’s identity. The general trends and problems associated with the redevelopment of the urban environment and the transformation of “arrogant” Soviet public spaces into places of recreation and communication are revealed. Among the limitations of the effectiveness of the historical policy and the policy of ethnicization of urban spaces, the author considers the conscious implementation of alternative strategies for the formation of urban identity by various social actors, the binding of iconic architectural objects to “empty” pseudo-public spaces or sports facilities that are not “anchor” objects, the creation of symbolic transit spaces in the status of “non-places”, the visual ethnic specificity of which is not available to those who use them.

Abstract:
- The Italian Social Republic as a historiographic problem proposes an interpretive key for a broader analysis of the Italian Social Republic (Rsi), from its formation to its collapse. The Party is seen both as the central actor of the Social Republic and the voice of its overall political project, within a prolonged confrontation and clash with the State. The relations of the Pfr with the different actors in the city of Turin are also explored: the urban community, the Church, the industrialists, the Germans and the Resistance. The interpretation reflects a micro-historical methodological approach, and proposes themes hitherto ignored, such as juvenile discontent and the generational break that resulted. The purpose is to propose new research tracks that make it possible to go beyond the local context, redefining some wider in historiographic questions.Key words: Fascist Republican Party, Italian Social Republic, Turin, Generation, Community.Parole chiave: Pfr, Rsi, Torino, generazione, comunitŕ.

Abstract:
This article explores the building of urban socialism in the port city of Dalian from 1945 through the mid-1950s. Hailed by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in 1949 as “New China’s model metropolis,” this former Japanese colonial city was occupied by the Soviet military until 1950. Postwar geopolitics situated Dalian and its residents at the forefront of implementing Soviet-inspired reforms that led to an image of Dalian not only as a vanguard city of the People’s Republic, but one intimately connected with the larger socialist world. The article argues that Dalian’s postwar geopolitical position as a Sino-Soviet space led to a cross-pollination of attitudes, actions, and policies that differed from much of the urban scene throughout the People’s Republic of China. It sheds new light on how the complex decolonization process of the early Cold War brought a Chinese city more closely into the Second World.

Abstract:
ANKARA, 1923-1950: THE SOCIO-SPATIAL MANIFESTATION OF REPUBLICAN WILL Tak, Ahmet Ph. D., Department of Sociology Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Yusuf Ziya Ö
zcan February 2007, 248 pages The social, cultural, aesthetic, and spatial aspects of the urban transformation in its specific relationship with a certain ideology is examined in the study. Ankara, as the capital city of a new state, is regarded as a materialized reflection of the modernization program of the Kemalist ideology which defined the main foundations of the Republic and shaped its formation. The formation process of Ankara is tried to be understood in a historical deepness. Therefore, in order to comprehend the nature of the social transformation, in a historical context, Istanbul is taken into consideration as a model for the traditional Ottoman city because it had represented the Ottoman urban ideals with its social, cultural and aesthetic aspects. From the Ottoman period to the Republican, the structural transformation of the cities is tried to be studied with referring to a notion of crisis which has covered the cultural area. Ankara had been the most important place where the endeavors of the Republican elite to build a nation and to create a national culture and identity had became manifest explicitly and in the most pure form. Therefore, the creation process of Ankara presents us an important exemple to understand social and cultural dimensions of the Turkish modernization in the Republican period. In the context of Ankara, the process of establishing a modern and national high culture and identity in the tensions between modernity and traditionalism and its consequences are examined in the study.

This research has the intention to discuss the construction of the republican city in the backwoods of Minas Gerais, taking as object of reflection the city of Patos, between 1889 and 1933. The choice of the object is due, first, to a gap in reflection about the cities in the period in question, although the intellectual production on the theme has striking gains, little is thought about the process that led to the establishment of towns, notably the mining interior. Now the city of Patos, today Patos de Minas, has a unique urban core that is a side dialogues with major projects of urbanization of the time, as the Paris of Haussmann Baron and the Pereira Passos’ Rio de Janeiro, for other hand also reflects the Lusitanian way to people. The urban core that originated the city is thus cut in two. A part, consisting north, behind the Church of Santo Antônio de Pádua, it was like that "seeded" as enshrined expression of Sérgio Buarque de Holanda, with an intricate network of alleys, narrow streets and alleys; while to the south, the core corresponds to the urban model of "civilized city" of the nineteenth century, with wide streets and avenues, arranged on the board format. Despite the peculiarity that urban conformation, the survey revealed that printed on it, as a palimpsest, the clash between two rival political groups: the Presbyterians, led by Family Dias Maciel and Catholics, led by Borges family. At the same time, research has shown that if the city was space and object of the conflict between the two groups, was also to other social subjects: the working classes who have gone "off" of the dispute between "Borges and Maciéis". Thus, in the process, be inferred at least "three cities of Patos": on which they lived and "worked" the Maciéis in apparent political interference; that they lived in the Borges, and from which they arose as opposed to Maciéis; and finally, the city where the poor lived, blacks and underprivileged, plagued by syphilis, alcoholism and poverty, in the suburbs of the Várzea and the "Beira da Lagoa".

This thesis interprets the São Paulo built through images by the film maker Ozualdo Candeias from 1967 to 1992 as a problematization of the exchanges held at the frontier between the urban world and the rural one, born from the process of industrialization and urbanization intensified in the fifties. By means of the creation of a Esthetics of Precariousness, the film maker invented cinematographic procedures for narrating the process of unstructuring of the paulista rural world on its meeting with the city. The geographic and cultural disterritorialization and the movement of reconstitution and resignifying of new territories in the city were aesthetically constructed through the mobility and orality of the rural populations received by the city, as well as the urban precariousness received by the country. In the chapter Cinema and Memory: Candeias at the Trash Point, we discuss the historical experience of the Cinema at the Boca do Lixo and its importance for the trajectory of Candeias as a city resident as well as a movies director. Starting from the fragments of memory registered in published statements, from the photos and documentaries on the Boca Cinema , we interpret the meanings which the director attributed to the rua do Triunfo (Triumph Street) as a social space for the movies people , and for some other sociabilities that anchored their existences in that street and neighborhood. In the chapter São Paulo, between the rural and the urban, we interpret the cinematographic representation of the process of disterritorialization and reterritorialization of the countryman in the city, interlaced with the experience of the cultural dislocation also lived by Candeias. In the chapter An Esthetics of Precariousness, we work the elements of what we named as the Esthetics of Precariousness: the mobility, the orality, and the precariousness esthetically worked out by means of the mixing up of fiction and documentary, of the disconstruction of classical cinema clichés based on photogeny, diegesis, scenery, characters and editing

Spa in the Czech Republic With a focus on spa Jeseník, Luhačovice, Třeboň and Františkovy Lázně As the subject of my work I chose the Czech Republic spa. I look at the spa environment as a social phenomenon that affects many areas of social life and has a great tradition in Czech culture. With its unique atmosphere and the composition of the clients who visit them, they are more than just popular places by tourists or health facilities but they have also influence on the life of the living there and spa visitors. The work is intended to serve as a general base that could be suitable for further exploration of this area, and therefore tries to cover as many areas of the issue as possible. I try to work with examples from history to point out the role of the spa in the past and how they gradually transformed into what they are today. I also look at services that are offered at the spa and the structure of clients who come to the spa. My field of interest was also the formation of spa towns and life in them. This area is distinguished from others for a large number of changing spa clients. In my work I also did a probe between clients and employees of spa Jeseník, Luhačovice, Třeboň and Františkovy Lázně. With it, I was able to outline some of the differences between the various spas.
