Achieving meaningful neighborhood revitalization remains a perennial challenge for urban planners, as problems facing inner-city neighborhoods are complex and interconnected. Most recently, both the practice and literature of neighborhood revitalization emphasized a comprehensive approach. Within this context, the concepts of capacity building and catalyst projects are gaining momentum. This thesis explores the emergence of and points of synergy between these concepts through a review of the literature and analysis of two urban design and capacity building projects: the West Philadelphia Landscape Project in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and the Bronx River Project in New York City, New York. Underlying this inquiry is the fundamental question: do catalyst projects represent a departure from the status quo or a strategic repackaging of past practices? The primary questions addressed in this thesis are as follows: ** Is there a typology of catalytic effects within neighborhood revitalization projects? What types of circumstances foster the development of catalysts? ** What role does capacity building play in the development of catalytic effects in urban design projects? ** In what ways can project organizers become more deliberate about fostering catalytic effects? This study revealed three types of catalytic effects within the case studies: projects can act as models, foster spin-off projects, or provide an overarching framework to enable other projects to engage. Capacity building and catalytic effects are indeed interconnected and mutually supportive. There is no precise recipe for creating catalytic effects within projects, as they can be unexpected as well as planned. Furthermore, catalytic effects often depend on mediating circumstances, such as timing and organizational capacity, to foster their development. The act of forming partnerships, in particular, builds constituencies, expands funding opportunities, and allows for the development of spin-off projects. Most importantly, adopting a watershed framework as the lens through which to organize proved most significant as it encourages both institutional and neighborhood-level change. Watersheds transcend political, social, and institutional boundaries, and working in this realm necessitates the development and integration of grassroots and city-level actors. The extent to which catalyst projects lead to systems change remains to be seen, however they do present a powerful model for activating both institutional and neighborhood-level change through a single planning effort.

The evolution of the contemporary society has changed the way we conceptualize the urban phenomena. New challenges and new visions have brought, during the last decades, new answers in the urban planning of European cities. The Polis Program - Costa de Caparica case study is an example of what urban planning tools are being used in the Portuguese context, particularly in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, during the past 10 years. The characterization of the Polis intervention in Costa de Caparica embraces the framing of the territory studied (about its urban development in the last decades and natural elements) and the identification of the Planning tools created to this territory. Localizing and understanding the tools which are part of the Polis intervention in Costa de Caparica (the strategic plan and the detail plans) allows to identify three major territorial options proposed by this Polis intervention: the control of the traditional urban center, the protection and valorisation of the ocean front and relocating functions. The Polis Program is created as a new urban planning process opposed to the established planning system, and searches a new way of planning to the naturalized areas that can go further than the ones there were before, which are mainly focused in protection. The urban strategy proposed by this Polis intervention promotes a clear definition of a urban area opposed to a naturalized area, having different approaches and planning techniques to wich area. The urban renewal operation promoted by the Polis Program don’t change the functional character of Costa de Caparica but show a believe in the expansion of walking path, cycling and public transport networks, and also the qualification of public space. The transformations proposed by the Polis Program – Costa de Caparica are part of a bigger transformation process happening in this territory. Expected modifications in infrastructure, diversification of activities and populations are creating a more complex and competitive territory that start to configure a highly structured urban landscape. In this context, the Costa de Caparica intervention has a special role in the design of a new urban morphology which is the naturalized areas of the dunes system, fossil cliff and agriculture lands of ‘Terras da Costa’.

Full textNowadays, vegetation seems to have an uncontested place in cities. Vegetation is regarded as valuable for well-being, social link, health, biodiversity, etc. Many rich knowledge exist on the subject but these ones only offer thematic or partial views, which make them difficult to mobilize in practise, especially for urban designing. In order to study urban vegetation and its complexity, a landscape approach has been chosen to have a transversal view on physical aspects (biological aspects included) and on immaterial ones, at different temporal and spatial scales. The methodology develops a diachronic urban landscape analysis on the city of Angers. We also use a research on design approach based on three contemporary urban projects located in Bordeaux, Lyon and Angers. Results show that vegetation, through specific places and precise shapes, appears to be a valuable resource to help solving different urban challenges. Nevertheless, far from being a panacea, vegetation as urban design material and tool, is based on particular knowledge and skills, but also on clear politic choices. We show that vegetation is also a conceptual resource to understand and to conceive urban management. Beyond this, the use of vegetation expresses a complex connection to nature. Urban design choices seem to express contradictory wishes, oscillating between a wish of comfort and neatness, and a wish to leave more space for wild and natural elements. Such contradiction may denote different ethic and politic positions

Full textThis thesis examines the ways in which designers in architecture, urbanism and landscaping agencies take sustainable development into account in their professional practices. It looks at what their attempts to appropriate sustainable development reveal about the operations of such organizations, the place of the latter in the project process, and the diverse positions and values that can develop as a result. Based on the in situ observation of a Parisian agency of about twenty designers between 2010 and 2013, our work has led to the definition of three axes of research : the approaches, contents and statuses that the designers attribute to sustainable development ; the designers’ value systems and how these evolve when they are faced with sustainable development ; the designers’ skills and roles in creating sustainable cities. The findings highlight that there is diversity in the designers’ approaches and priorities with regard to sustainable development. Skills appear to play a role in cognitive and operational appropriation, but also in the competition between professions. Furthermore, designers base their practices on norms and values that stem from the sometimes conflicting logics of the market, industrial, civic, fame and inspired worlds (Boltanski, Thévenot, 1991). The designers’ attempts to appropriate sustainable development reinforce rather than transform the tensions between these logics. This thesis aims to increase the knowledge about the mechanisms at play when urban design stakeholders adopt sustainable development. It contributes to a better understanding of the modes of operation of designers, observed in the environment of their agency

The interpretation of the territory from the point of view of urban formation, requires knowledge of the various logics that underlie it, and involves identifying of the critical factors that justify their evolution and their underlying various stages of development. In this way arises the desire to reflect about the urban formation of the area of Sines, as well as is interpretation and comprehension reading, prepared from three key elements - city, harbor and landscape -, that are indeed the major determinants of the urban formation of this area and determine their reading frame which results from the understanding of the importance of the ocean, the urban development and the forest landscape, it holds in the urban structure of this territory and its interpretation of the relationships that they establish between themselves, more or less close, and that justify and characterize its temporal expression, conceptualized in various stages of its formation - 1940, 1970, 1980, 1990, 2000. The methodology adopted, allowed to defining a criterion for rigorous analysis, coherent, harmonious and transverse across the various periods identified and to theoretical interpretations and cartographic presented. This research has particular interest in the innovation process of interpretation and characterization of Sines, a growing area in transformation.

This research examines how post-infrastructural open space has been approached in contemporary design practice using three urban parks in Berlin as sites for investigation: Tempelhofer Feld, Park am Gleisdreieck, and Natur-Park Schöneberger Südgelände. These sites are analyzed in juxtaposition with the discourse around "landscape urbanism," as these projects' timelines are dispersed across the beginning, rise, and plateau of that movement. First, I have tracked how landscape urbanism has been discussed in the literature since its coinage -- what terms are used most frequently within the discourse and in what manner, which projects are most often called upon to illustrate central themes, and what theoretical building blocks are used in support of the concept. I then pull out specific themes prevalent in the literature that help to construct a method for analyzing the three aforementioned open spaces: how the historically dichotomized conceptions of "urban" and "nature" are approached in each space by examining edge conditions in relation to their surrounding urban fabric, how time and process are considered in each site's staging of new programmatic interventions, and how the sites incorporate elements of previous infrastructural use, including relics and ruins. This section contains a series of drawings, diagrams, and annotated photographs illustrating this analysis, along with experiential observations and timelines describing the development process in each sites transformation from infrastructure to open space. The critique explores how the theoretical discourse around landscape urbanism has engaged built projects and why such an examination is critical as the larger discipline continues to evolve and reorient.

Full textIn 2000, the European Landscape Convention has introduced and highlighted a number of key points which intended to renew the ways of approaching the landscape, also covering the subjects of public participation or the diversity of disciplinary articulations — for example, a greater concern was expressed about the places where people live, such as urban and periurban areas; the public should have an active role and responsibility as well as awareness raising, training and education through an enhanced part in participation actions; crossdisciplinary and more diversity on the approaches related to landscape matters are needed. It was from this context that this investigation was developed, proposing a different perspective of analysis between landscape architecture and art, that is: on the one hand, it was intended to address the current challenges related to the public engagement and participation taking into account the long experience of the art practices in participatory projects; on the other hand, it was intended to contribute to a better clarification on how different disciplines such as landscape architecture and art address similar themes and concerns, and how this can contribute to more efficient design practices and diversified collaborations. Thus, different approaches were analyzed and discussed, produced from temporary projects carried out by artists or by different collaborations between art, landscape architecture and other disciplines, in order to contribute not only to more efficient and inclusive design practices, but also to improve engagement processes between the public, the design team and the project. The aim is to reinforce a more active role of the public that may translate into responsibility as well as in awareness raising, training, and education, mainly referring to the specific context of the urban landscape

Full textIn France, a policy regarding the preservation of the environment and nature emerged during the 1970s (ministry of the environment, legislation). Since 2004, when the national strategy for biodiversity was adopted, and when the priorities of sustainable development began to take shape operationally in the cities on the basis of Agenda 21, this policy has continued to gain strength. This has been in particular due to the impact of new legislation (Grenelle 1 and 2 ; Loi n° 2016-1087 of 8th August 2016 for the recovery of biodiversity, nature and landscapes, etc.), but also to scientific research in ecology (green infrastructure programme : Trame Verte Urbaine) and a widespread raising of awareness with regard to ecology. In a highly urbanised context, with more and more of the population living in cities, the urban environment, harbouring as it does a plethora of natural spaces with natural characteristics, and of a quite distinctive character, has become a favoured focus of study. Among the professions contributing to the enhancement of the urban living environment, the landscape designers, because their role generally calls for the deployment of plant material, are actors who are in theory in a position to give expression by means of their project to ecological and / or environmental imperatives (biodiversity, water management, etc.). The urban parks in general, and in particular those of Marseille, thus constitute an interesting topic of study to investigate ways of ecologization of landscape design practices, and have done since an environmental design policy began to emerge (1970s).This thesis is based on a threefold analysis focused on the discourse of French landscape designers, then of managers of green spaces departments, and finally inventories of the plant assemblages in 5 Marseille public parks. Finally, it would appear that apart from Gilles Clément – a key figure in landscape design – whose naturalist background is well known but requires discussion, the ecologization in the practices of members of this profession remains discreet, and does not sufficiently integrate the functioning of these urban ecosystems. If this aspect has tended to change over at least the past ten years, the fact remains that it is rather the managers of municipals green spaces departments, in some cases committed to the ecological management (part of gestion différenciée) of their parks and gardens, who play a role in driving change with regard to the plant assemblages in terms of both their composition and their appearance. But it is apparent that we are lacking today the expression of a landscape design approach that is capable of integrating, beyond the scale of a park, these same priorities, related as much to urban planning as to ecology. Thus the ecologization of the landscape design profession would appear to lack tools and methods derived from these two disciplines

Full textThe public space is, par excellence, the space for the community life. Currently, the introduction of values is demanded, although some of those values appear to have been forgotten. As far as citizens are concerned, their growing demand and care for more qualified areas leads to taking public spaces into account when urban planning is put up. At any time, but especially in troubled periods, as those we live today, people will inevitably choose to be heard in the public space. This study aims to demonstrate that the quality formerly present in some areas can be gained again through requalification. Regarding the specific characteristics of the public space, spaces can be designed in order to make community life possible, which is often lacking in today's society. The citizens are more demanding about the quality of the public space; through the project of Landscape Architecture, the public spaces, in this case, get quality back.

Full textIf it seems evident, since a few decades, to protect the architectural heritage during renewal operations or urban planning, the environmental protection is a much more recent preoccupation and has become an imperative only since the emergence of the concept of sustainable development in the 1990s. Through these two themes, i.e. the heritage and the environment, the landscaped quality of the urban projects always seems to be implicit in every regulations, steps or specifications of the operations of development without, however, being explicitly quoted as an objective to be reached. This research suggests to connect both notions of townscape, linked to the protection of the heritage, and sustainable development, including beside the social and the economic aspect the question of the environment, in order not to neglect, under pretext of "making" sustainable districts, the landscaped incidences. The historic and statutory analysis of the term of townscape, whose validity has already been demonstrated on the Parisian territory, together with some reflections on the emergence of the notion of sustainable development in the Parisian administration, led us to evoke a new representation of the "ideal" city as the origin of new urban forms. Finally, the detailed study of three sustainable projects of development, allowed us to identify new ways of monitoring in which the initiatives of sustainable development and evaluation play an increasing role. The consideration of the landscaped quality, as contributing to the "manufacturing" of sustainable townscapes and sustainable urban project, seems already acquired by the actors even if it doesn't yet appear clearly, until these days, in the monitoring of the operations. This research develops the first elements of an answer in order to consider and evaluate urban landscaped quality as a real objective in the conception, realization and maintenance of sustainable districts

Full textThe purpose of this work is the study of roof gardens and its application in landscape architecture project, some bases are made to differentiate the various types of gardens highlighting its history, as long as it has popped up today, the technical as well as specific benefits. Many types of roof gardens are approached as cases of studies, as the extensive roof garden in a dwelling in Vila Nova de Gaia, designed by Neoturf in January 2011 and the roof garden of the building of Portugal Telecom, in Picoas, project by the landscape architect Manuel Sousa da Câmara done sometime between 1980 and 1982. The latter will also be analyzed in terms of design. The connection between two very distinct works and a lot of stress will be made show the 30 year old gap. The roof gardens of both houses and commercial buildings, or even small support structures are increasingly used. In addition to all the benefits that are described throughout this dissertation, the parcels of land are turning more scarce and expensive, what makes it more difficult for a landscape architect to create gardens, and gardens are really important in an urban center.

Full textThis work aims to generate design guidelines for an area located in the center of the city of Sao Jose do Rio Preto, considering the influence that the different morphologies of open spaces cause the microclimate. For the study, it adopted a set of methodological procedures that enabled the characterization and analysis of three distinct urban settings: the squares and Rui Barbosa Dom José Marcondes and an excerpt from \"promenade\" of Bernardino. Even situated within the same urban area, with similar environmental characteristics, the three points have different configurations and geometries. The analysis of the built environment through tall template maps, vegetation, soil surface coating materials showed characteristics that affect the microclimate and influence the use of space. The gathering of microclimate data helped to confirm the hypothesis that, in the same climatic environment, changes in urban morphology modify the conditions of comfort and interfere with the quality and use of open spaces. The findings of these studies resulted in recommendations for the project, demonstrating how the microclimate analysis can become an important tool in the process of open space architecture design, guiding decisions favorable to environmental conditions and human use.

The present thesis aims to problematize the gated communities model (produced in Brazil as condominium and closed parceling, among others), named here by ?closed urban nucleus?, and to construct arguments to questioning the effects generated by these communities closed by walls. It is the hypothesis that is possible to measure the impact of this model taking with categories of analysis of the changing in the urban landscape, in the urban mobility and in the integration to the urban dynamic. Using the objective criteria associated to urban morphology, the valuation of the effects caused by this model reproduction, alone or in group, intend to cause the creation of arguments that sustain technically the oppose to this model, criticized for different areas of knowledge. Throughout the process of this study, has been developed a method to read the effects caused by these ?closed urban nucleus? in the city. The punctuation criteria established to evaluate the resultant effects of this urban design permit problematize and question the limits of this urban development model. This research analyzed 85 ?closed urban nucleus? located at Valinhos, belonging to Campinas Metropolitan Region, S?o Paulo State.
It´s a fact , today, a constant worry about the understanding of publicity world, given the undoubted importance of the efects that this world has on us. In the context of such worry, the objective of this research is to identify the suggestibility strategies used to create the advertising communication directed to billboards. To do so, the influence level iconicity to follow these strategies on the advertising messages and the associations that we are apt to make through these signs or semi-signs that are presented by the power of suggestibility. This dissertation is presented into five chapters. The first, named The City, there is a historical study of how the cities were born and their evolution, pointing out the city of São Paulo and the Paulista avenue, which was chosen to obtain the billboards for analysis and interpretation. In chapter two, named TheBillboard, a historical profile will be outlined, bringing the memory of the billboard evolution back in Brazil and mainly in the city of São Paulo. The third chapter: Advertising: the association of ideas, images and words, concerns about the contextualizing of advertising besides looking for illustrating the power of advertising on the consumer. In the forth chapter: A brief looking over at the Pierce s theory, the theoretical support will be presented, in a non exhaustive way, so that it is possible to base the analysis of the billboard of the fifth and last chapter. Last but not least, in chapter five: The suggestibility strategies used to create the advertising communication, the semiotics analyses are found with emphasis on the iconicity levels and on the details of making a billboard searching its suggestibility strategies

The open spaces, green areas, parks and squares are of great importance to the urban structure, to qualify and regenerate. Some types of urban actions can come from the public sector or through partnerships between the public and private, all benefit when this type of partnership is well developed and applied. One example is the case studies in this research, the Victor Civita Square, the Brascan Century Plaza and Rochaverá Corporate Towers, each within its context was structured public-private partnerships. These projects are described and analyzed within the whole of the contemporary urban landscape that are inserted, covering the whole urban context and history of each one, how their sidewalks and plazas communicate with the environment as, as well the elements of their vegetation and green areas.

Assessing the landscape of rivers in cities is the subject of this work, considering that, in most cases, banks and courses are transformed over time by the action of uses and harmful occupations, sublimating their identity and resulting in "residual space", according to Ferrara (2000). The degrading condition of urban fountains, at first glance, suggests the strangeness of landscape study, but imposes itself as one of the factors that required the extension of the term in contemporary (Cauquelin, 2007). The aesthetic perception becomes important from the relative seriousness of environmental issues in view of the progressive spatial degradation of streams, ponds, swamps, springs, beaches and rivers, for example, the Meia Ponte river route in Goiania. In the city, among the 85 water bodies that drain the territory of the metropolitan region there are only two rivers being one of them being the Meia Ponte, having their margins hit by high pollution levels(ANA, 2012). Even if in the past the fountain has represented reason for choosing the territory of the new capital Goias and subsequently their planning has been based on idealism preservationist system of green areas proposed by planners Attilio Corrêa Lima and Armando de Godoi (RIBEIRO, 2010), even bitterness titles as the seventh most corrupt spring of Brazil (ANA, 2011). The spatial perceptions, combined with the subsistence needs, possibly led man to elect the proximity to waterways one of the factors responsible for its fixation in the territory. Ironically, these days, this one is the reason for their estrangement. The different behaviors regarding the use of riverbanks express representing relationships in the social context of the place, acting decisively in the potentiation or limitation of its resources.

Full textOver the past decades, biodiversity erosion has speeded up and become a global environmental concern since. Anthropization has led to. The mitigation hierarchy (avoidance, reduction and offsetting of impacts) is a regulatory tool implemented in a context of habitat destruction and fragmentation, disrupting species’ life cycle. The objective is to achieve “no net loss” of biodiversity following urban development. Although biodiversity conservation regulations have recently better addressed ecosystem functioning, the mitigation hierarchy is still being implemented with little concern for the spatial configuration of ecosystems in the landscape. This thesis hypothesizes that the major difficulties encountered by stakeholders are, in part, methodological and technical. Situating our research at the knowledge-action interface, we propose a methodological framework based on several modeling approaches, to respond to the different scientific and operational challenges. This thesis joins forces with other scientific projects and stakeholders’ networks by exploring complementary axes. To this end, we first integrate spatio-temporal issues of biodiversity into overall mitigation hierarchy application, focusing on potential impacts and dimensioning at “territorial development project” scale through a case study on the new stadium in Lyon (Southern France). Combining species distributions models and spatial graphs improves habitat connectivity and therefore the design of the development projects. Next, we demonstrate the positive impacts on peri-urban habitat connectivity of pooling and anticipating offsets in the suburbs of Lyon. In the last part, we demonstrate the implications of an anticipated and planned approach to the mitigation hierarchy on a planning scale. We consider both ecological connectivity and urban dynamics, in an attempt to minimize the ecological impacts of urban sprawl by avoiding urbanization of areas of highest ecological value and then enhance the application of biodiversity offsetting. This method is tested on projections for the Toulouse conurbation (Southern France) by 2040. Thus, this thesis presents an overall approach that can help to increase habitat connectivity and to improve the design of territorial development projects at different spatial and temporal scales. This methodology is based on freeware available to all practitioners. It will serve planners, designers, and decision-makers needing to ensure that there are no significant or irreversible effects on biodiversity, and environmental authorities making sure that all environmental issues are taken into account in the design of development projects

Full textThe South American urban parks keep both historical and cultural reminiscences that are crystallized in their natural areas, in their monuments, and in their architecture. On the one hand, the message one acquires from this visual universe may be used to transmit knowledge about the local patrimony; however, it requires efficient communication means to transform this potential into clear and accurate information that leads to users\' understanding and consume. As verified in the visual environmental signage projects of Parque Estadual Serra da Cantareira in São Paulo (Brazil), Güirã-Oga in Misiones (Argentina), and of the Botanic Garden in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), the signal systems - composed of images and texts based on research conducted in those areas and on the synthesis of the gathered information - not only inform, direct, and guide, but also lead users to make critical reflection on questions related to the patrimony, with consequent positive effects on the system as a whole. This idea is the basis from which visual environmental projects for South American urban parks are derived aiming to disseminate knowledge about natural and cultural landscapes of Latin American countries, and as a result, obtain the inherent benefits such as protection and conservation. In order to subsidize the elaboration of guidelines, an analytical basis for the urban parks will be planned based on a comparative analysis of the Parque Metropolitano in Santiago (Chile), Ibirapuera in São Paulo (Brazil), Tres de Febrero in Buenos Aires (Argentina), and Del Prado in Montevideo (Uruguay). The methods and practices chosen to research and analyze the parks comply with Kevin Lynch\'s set of multimedia (1960) used for creating the urban design for American cities.

Full textAirports are protean geographical objects characterized by their « accelerated obsolescence » (BANHAM, 1962). Since the 1990s, their final transformation has been structured around a process of functional diversification engendered by new activities, which are sometimes very different from air transport, in order to increase the infrastructures’ profits and profitability in a context of widespread privatization. The world’s largest hub airports are concerned by this evolution, especially the Paris-Charles-de-Gaulle airport, the world’s fourth busiest airport by international passenger traffic. This trend, which has given birth to the operational concept of airport city, as the Anglo-Saxon operators and observers call it, stirs up the geographical curiosity in two ways. Firstly, it questions the primary function of airports, which become unidentified spatial objects that need to be redefined. Secondly, the concept of airport city questions the city itself. Indeed, what makes a city a city on a material (urbanity) and conceptual (“citadinity”) level? Can a space with urban functions be considered as a city? Is the airport city only a functional city? By assessing the geographical relevance of the concept of airport city, this thesis aims at making the concepts of urbanity and “citadinity” operational concepts, so as to compare them with the airport ground. By adjusting the observation scale to the whole airport area, it also replaces the airport at the centre of the geographical study. Thus, the airport is not simply viewed as a terminal. Finally, this thesis aims at understanding the whole airport society’s spatiality (passengers, employees, accompanying people, homeless people…) by assessing the concept of “citadinity"

This study aims at demonstrating that the Guaranian culture has its own logic of territorial organization on a local, regional and macro regional scale. In order to do so, this research is grounded in the concept of Cultural Landscape which imposes the potential to provide men with the resources that uphold a given culture to territory. With a view to integrating new ideas and realities, this dissertation traces history back and finds out that even before the European?s arrival, Guarani tribes had already settled down in an organized manner, with a number of territorial bases which remain up to present days. Historical and cartographical analyses reveal that Guarani tribes were successively subject to the superimposition of different means of territorial organization, whether Spanish, Jesuitical, Marquess of Pombal?s, imperial or republican, throughout history; thus hindering and subjecting their own organization to change, while imposing new ways of life which were always incompatible and intolerant to their culture. By identifying such superimpositions, we are able to advocate that the Guarani are neither culturally nomad nor migrating tribes, but have been historically forced to find new wide territories of appropriate environmental complexity where they could restore their own organization and, as a result, their own culture. At present, policies on settlement, integration and social welfare towards the Guarani go on promoting the same binomial superimposition-migration, as they are based on the same principles of replacing values, meanings and ways of life.
Thesis, Lyon, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019LYSEN059.
Full textThis PhD thesis deals with urban morphogenesis of the Rhône Valley, stretching 300 km rectilinearly from Lyon to the Mediterranean sea. It defends the « designed hypothesis » Rhodapolis which intends to enhance the living capability of urban sprawl along the Rhône River. Five formal concepts (Dynamic Blue Mesh, Interactive Network Frame, Rhodanian Linear Archipelago, European Urbanized Rivers, Web-Place City) are being detailed in this work as well as a prototype laboratory in-situ (LGV-Lab).The preliminary flipbook, made of a series of documentary photographs has the intention to reveal the singularity of a geographic object that we miss to watch spontaneously. From this fluvial site, the flipbook is built out of a critical outlook which has established some of the issues raised. The production of a specific epistemo-iconographic atlas through Q-GIS software has proven the cognitive value of observable cartographic results, which prospective urban morphotypes are the most representative. The river, highly extraordinary place to re-envision, consolidating urbanity and third-landscape, is the tangible reality of a genius loci that needs to interfere a standard urban soil-less thinking. Based on anthropologic, architectural and geographic works, we are questioning the notion of linearity shaping the environment. Desurbanism, organic architecture, Regional Planning : all those notions imply a tight relationship between the concepts of territory and architecture ; somehow opposite, the interaction of those scales give us tools to have a different thinking around urban design in the XXI century. With its hybrid structure, Rhodapolis is a kind of urban concept that is inspired by the two main urban models of metropolisation and suburbanization : selecting and extrapolating a few of their respective characteristics. At the junction of a critical self reflective paper and a generalist essay, the conclusion offers an introspection of Rhodapolis, a specimen of the 4th type city shaped by the river ; its hybridity, organicity and europeanity side would be its main characteristics. In the end, this thesis defended by an architect, tries to put forward what could define architecturology : starting from experimental work, a refocus on architectural research is initiated by asserting – through the transcaling principle- notions of shape, of design and of spatial conception, as the basis of the architectural field

At the cross-road between aesthetics and politics, the making of public space can be the art to invent new processes of subjectification. The policy formulation and implementation of “Urban and Rural Landscape Improvement Plan” in the past decade provides a lens observing the radical transformation of urban regeneration policy in Taiwan. At the initial stage, local identity and community development was operated to build consensus for reasons of political legitimacy. From project as“Creating Urban- Rural New landscape Action Plan”, "Extension of Domestic Demand Program" to “Challenge 2008-National Development Plan” with its own expenditure, urban and landscape plan had has become a strategic project. The shift away from formula-driven funding mechanisms towards controversial competitive bidding, explicit encouragement of a new form of multi-sector partnerships, and new localism and emergence of a contract culture among local-central governments could be seen as modes of regulation responding globalizing evolving economic. In the last decade, what chaos has “Urban and Rural Landscape Improvement Plan” managed? In the world-wide globalizing competition, nations have been keen on systemic framework construction, adoption and devoted to instigate innovative financial management strategy to survive; can “Urban and Rural Landscape Improvement Plan” work as an effective policy tool? Competitiveness, local governance and ecological construction are the main core value of the landscape project, but can those become action plan? By researching literature such as urban policy in England, European Landscape Convention, International Building Exhibition, and case analysis of awarded landscape transformation plan and following empirical studies, the paper tries to re-interpret the formulation and implementation of the “Urban and Rural Landscape Improvement Plan”. After 4 case studies, we realized that whether a single plan or integrated program, it is important to show how ordinary citizens in the support of government are restoring their communities by creating sustainable urban-rural ecosystems. Environmentally beneficial solutions can cost less and contribute to growth rather impede it. Therefore, it needs a continuously socio-political reform of enhancing institutional capacity to guide the social learning tour. The challenge competitive funding mechanism has facilitated local governments and agencies to adopt excellent initiatives to compete for funding and solve the empirical physical problems at the same time. This paper suggests that the dis-integrated corporation among governments and authorities has contributed inefficient resources usage;political imbroglio has diminished the related policies and fair competition;function of general consultant has also been limited. Further, the draft of Landscape Law failed to be adopted and so far the Landscape Master Plan has no empirical tool and law support to be carried out. Landscape protection and management would be threatened. Despite that the Urban and Rural Landscape Improvement Plan has facilitated with good-enough measures, mechanisms and excellent examples to guide local governments and authorities, this paper doubt that there is still a long way to go especially in the complicated political, economical, cultural and social context.

With the rapid development of the city and the strong sense of the preservation of cultural assets, in the past social structure we have recognized, the new form of urban reconstruction and the construction of the original features must preserve the integrity and reuse to ensure the continuation of the spatial history of the city. Sexuality, integrity and diversity promote the connection between urban sustainability and the historical context of the land, and thus highlight the uniqueness of the development planning and regional landscape, local living culture and industrial development of the new district. The city is a spatial process of organic growth. In the course of development, the existing historical texture should not be arbitrarily erased, emphasizing the benefits of “overall renewal”, and the preservation of “historical texture” is not only the narrow preservation of the old building shell, it must be Expand to the level of urban regional landscape and the uniqueness of regional cultural industry, and link the new urban living needs with local humanities to form a compatible urban life model. This article takes the actual case "Taoyuan Qian Air Force Base Facilities Cultural Research Preservation and Activation Plan" and "Airline City Project" as the research targets, and discusses the adjustment measures of "cultural preservation" and "urban project development" in the process of conflict. Save the goal of "development" symbiosis.

Full textIn the scope of the investigation, it is limited to the parishes of Carcavelos, Parede and São Domingos de Rana, in an area of this territory between Ribeira das Marianas and Ribeira de Caparide. The observation of this territory reflects the result of human action: a process of appropriation and transformation guided by new needs, substantively disjointed with the congenial characteristics of this type of landscape. Since the beginning of the research and especially the project exercise, we have been interested in the water lines. These were crucial as sustaining an agricultural landscape and, with the advent of real estate occupation, forgotten and adulterated, whenever their location hindered the growth of an unregulated periphery. In other words, supporting a fertile soil for agriculture and vineyards, they began to play a secondary role, close to abandonment. With the research developed it was mainly intended to anchor the project exercise in a deeper knowledge of this territory, while studying, in other cases of study, strategies of renaturalization of devitalized territories. Finally, the project exercise aimed at reintegrating the dynamic tissue of this territory with the Sassoeiros stream, designing and requalifying its shores, defining planted garden spaces and constructing urbanity inducing equipments.
